Burglars hit 50 houses BY MYLES HUME
MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
The “blasé attitude” of Ashburton residents is hindering police attempts to bring down offenders linked to 50 home burglaries in three months. The unprecedented spike across urban Ashburton has prompted pleas for the community to report suspicious behaviour immediately so police
can nab the syndicate of young adult offenders believed to be responsible. Ashburton police intelligence officer Mark Prendergast said police were alerted to 50 home burglaries since the beginning of November, which recently spread from Hampstead and Netherby through to Allenton and Tinwald. It is estimated there were just as many thefts from vehicles,
and 16 burglaries from commercial properties. “As far as dwelling burglaries go, I haven’t seen it this high before,” Mr Prendergast said. “We have identified a number of offenders, and we are trying hard to corral that group to the point where we can lay some charges and start making headway, and that’s just not happening at the speed we would like,” Mr Prendergast said.
“It’s disappointing the relaxed attitude a lot of Ashburton folk take to these sort of incidents. “They are unhurried in reporting it, often we get these reports given to us the following day when we visit the area ... this blasé attitude is making it difficult for us to keep a lid on it.” Mr Prendergast said police have a number of suspects, and had so far arrested another three
people, charging them with burglary. The youngest of those offenders was a 15-year-old. Three others were previously arrested following an Oxford Street break in early last month. However, police believe these offenders are part of a wider group. Ashburton police can be contacted on 3078400, or anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
