MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
The heartache for Sina Solomona’s family is set to continue for some time after the sentencing of her killer was adjourned. The teenager was to be sentenced on Friday at the High Court in Timaru after pleading guilty last October to her murder and sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection. However, the High Court in Christchurch confirmed yesterday the sentencing had been put off following a tele-conference held late last week between the Crown prosecutor, defence counsel and a judge. The now 17-year-old, who was 15 at the time he was arrested, denied any involvement for 10 months until pleading guilty late last year. case wrapped up after Ms Solomona was murdered in her Cass Street home on December 15, 2012. Heavy suppression orders surrounding the case prevent the Guardian from publishing details over why sentencing has been adjourned. He said there were numerous reasons sentencing was postponed in other cases, including new evidence coming to light, victim impact statements, demand for further reports and delays over probation officers drawing up appendixes for electronically monitored sentences. Ashburton Methodist Church minister Tevita Taufalele, who conducted Ms Solomona’s funeral and has worked closely with the family, imagined it would be a tough pill for them to swallow. “I can’t speak for the family, but I can say I feel for them having to endure a long delay again and not knowing what’s For the Solomona family the wait for closure following Sina’s murder has just going to happen,” he said. been extended after the accused’s sentencing was adjourned.
