Booze bus could stop disorder BY SUSAN SANDYS
SUSAN.S@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Ashburton police have mooted introducing a late-night bus to transport intoxicated people home from the town. Senior sergeant Scott Banfield said police and security staff had been disappointed to find heavily intoxicated people “staggering from late night bars” at the weekend. While he had been pleased with the “positive” results of a crackdown on drink driving and booze-related incidents, the “steady number” of intoxicated persons had shown there could be a need for a late night bus or similar. The police crackdown, the second in two months, saw over 1000 drivers stopped at road checkpoints, and just one person processed for drink driving. Additionally, police visited a number of hotels with patrons being observed in good spirits and no liquor ban offences were detected. “However between 2am and
4am in the morning, police and security staff providing reassurance patrols around McDonald’s where alcohol-fuelled disorder has erupted in the past, were disappointed to find a steady number of heavily intoxicated persons staggering from the late night bars,” Mr Banfield said. Most of them had not planned a way to get home after visiting the fast food premises. “This has highlighted a need to open some discussion around a late night bus or similar to be available to transport persons home rather than having groups of intoxicated persons hanging around in any one area,” Mr Banfield said. “But this is a work in progress and can be raised with local stake holders.” Overall police were pleased with potential drivers showing responsibility for making good decisions and using courtesy vans or a nominated driver. “The challenge for us as a community is to maintain this standard.”
