Plea for drugs sparks warning BY TONI WILLIAMS
TONI.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A Mid Canterbury woman’s online plea for unused antibiotics has raised concern and sparked a warning from the medical profession. The Guardian was alerted last week to an online request in a public forum for unused antibiotic medication. It was made by a person who wanted to treat a chest infection but could not afford a visit to the doctor.
Mid Canterbury GP spokesperson Dr John Guthrie said it was unwise to use other people’s prescribed medication, and people needed to finish any prescribed course. “It is important for the person prescribed an antibiotic to complete the course as an incomplete course can sometimes lead to a failure of treatment and increases risk of bacteria becoming resistant,” he said. Dr Guthrie said old antibiotics
could lose their potency and, in some cases, have serious effects. It was reassuring other forum members cautioned the person from using other people’s medications; and recommended they visited the Hakatere Marae medical clinic, where consultations were done for a donation. Dr Guthrie said if a patient had a genuine need, they should not be turned away from medical care, and the doctor treating her might be able to accommo-
date the payment. He also recommended people visited a doctor before they started treatment for a self-diagnosed condition. “The person who makes their own diagnosis has a fool for a physician. Even doctors are advised to have their own GP,” Dr Guthrie said. He said most common coughs, colds and flus were due to viruses, and antibiotics were inappropriate, he said.
He recommended a smokefree lifestyle to people with a fresh fruit and vegetable diet to “increase one’s resistance to infection and resilience should one get an infection”. Dr Guthrie said there were some chronic conditions where a doctor may issue a prescription for antibiotics in advance. “In such conditions the patient will be well educated as to when and why he or she should start medication.”
