Dust chokes Methven

Gale-force winds whipped up a dust storm in Methven and a large fire at Mayfield on Saturday, both forcing families to flee their homes. Winds reached 110 kilometres per hour at Methven, and the town was swamped by a thick cloud of airborne topsoil from nearby farm paddocks. Residents including Debz

Wilson on Pudding Hill Road were worst affected. Ms Wilson said her young children were unable to breathe inside the house, despite all the windows and doors being shut. Her parents, whom she was staying with while building a new home, had lived there for 20 years and never seen anything like it before. “It was horrible, we had to wait for it to die down enough

to get the kids in the car and drive out,” she said. They escaped to Timaru just after midday to take the children swimming. They now face weeks of cleaning up the soil and any farm chemical residues it may have in it from the home’s interior, and Ms Wilson was still dealing with a headache from inhaling the dirt. Methven Golf Club operators suspended play on Satur-

day as the dust storm enveloped the course, and with the resulting soil on the green yesterday, had to cancel a weekend pennants tournament. Golf co-ordinator Barry Wackwitz described the storm as “nasty” and “ugly”. He said it raged from about 8.30am to 2.30pm. There was only three metres visibility on Pudding Hill Road. “The paddock was on the

move. A couple of guys went out and tried (to play), they just came in covered in dust,” Mr Wackwitz said. On Mt Hutt, the skifield’s wind station was blown off-line by gusts estimated to be similar to the record of 251.9 kilometres per hour during last year’s September 10 windstorm.
