Pedestrian struck by car in Rakaia

An 18-year-old pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a car just outside Rakaia late on Saturday night.

The police have identified him as Danny Mather Hendriks, 18, from Rakaia.

Mr Hendriks was struck by the car on Acton Road at 11pm.

Acton Road is a rural road located on the outskirts of Rakaia township. It does not have footpaths or lighting.

The vehicle involved in the accident stopped and emergency services were called but Mr Hendriks died at the scene.

The Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade was called in to assist at the accident. However officer in charge Murray Smith was unable to comment.

Ashburton police sergeant Bryan Ennis said a female driver had been processed for blood alcohol procedures and police were waiting on results.

He said it was too early to know whether any charges would be laid.

Police were calling for any witnesses that may have seen a male walking on either State highway one, Michael Street or Acton Road at Rakaia between 10pm and 11.15pm on Saturday night.

The scene was examined by the Serious Crash Unit and the circumstances surrounding Mr Hendriks being struck by the car were still being investigated.

Any information can be given to police on 3078400.

Czechs have found a use for public telephone booths in the era of the mobile phone: convert them into mini public libraries.

So far, Prague has seven tiny lending libraries where passersby can help themselves to books.

People can borrow or drop off old books they no longer need.

The organisers, Knihobudka, set up the “book boxes” last month in booths that the telecoms company no longer needs. Over 95 per cent of Czech adults own their own mobile phone, leaving little use for public telephones.

There are still about 15,000 telephone boxes in the Czech Republic. While the Poles may be new to the idea of phone booth libraries, the Brits caught onto the idea long ago with offerings such as this one (left).

Man wants $140, ATM spits out $37,000 A malfunctioning ATM at a bank in Maine has dispensed $37,000 in cash to a man who requested $140. South Portland police say they responded to the TD Bank branch after getting a call from a woman who said a man was spending an unusual amount of time at the ATM she was waiting to use. Officers found the man stuffing cash into a shopping bag. The money was returned to the bank. Bank officials say they don’t want to press charges. But police continue to investigate. The man hasn’t been charged. A bank official describes the problem as a “code error” and says no customer accounts were affected.

Skyscraper-sized game wows hundreds Hundreds of Tetris fans had a little fun on Saturday with a big version of the classic video game. The Philadelphia skyscraper-sized version created a spectacle against the night sky that organisers hoped would inspire onlookers and players to think about the possibilities of technology.

The 29-storey Cira Centre, which has hundreds of LED lights embedded in its glass facade, normally displays colorful geometric patterns at night. On Saturday, images of supersized shapes “fell” on two sides of the mirrored tower as competitors used joysticks to manoeuvre them into place. It wasn’t the first time Tetris has been played on a building. But the 100,000-square-foot “screen” - which includes the north and south faces of the structure - could be a record. City resident Sam Robinson, 30, said he signed up on a whim for the lottery to play because he figured “it would be cool to play the world’s largest game of Tetris”. “It has been probably 15 years since I played Tetris last on a Game Boy, and it’s much different playing on the side of building that’s a half-mile away,” he said. “Everything’s happening so quick.”

Nazi leader Adolf Hitler might have married a woman of Jewish descent, according to DNA analysis conducted for a TV documentary. The British Channel 4 programme will claim that Eva Braun, the lover whom the anti-Semitic fuhrer married shortly before they both killed themselves in 1945, was possibly of Jewish ancestry. The Dead Famous DNA film - to be screened in the UK on Wednesday – tested hair samples that are said to have come from a hairbrush used

by Braun and discovered at Hitler’s mountain retreat. The German leader was 23 years older than his lover and worried the relationship would affect his image, he kept her largely hidden away at his Alpine residence, the Berghof. A team of scientists examined the hair and they found a particular sequence within the DNA called the haplogroup N1b1, which had been passed down the maternal line. The channel said the sequence was “strongly associated” with Ashkenazi Jews, who make up around 80 per cent of the global Jewish population.

NY restaurant ‘bans’ Putin Hey Putin, don’t even think about ordering a Super Mighty in Buffalo. Mighty Taco, a Buffalo-based chain of Mexican fast-foot restaurants, has banned Russian President Vladimir Putin from all of the company’s 23 locations in western New York.

The company known for its quirky ads announced on social media that effective immediately, Putin is banned from Mighty Taco for seizing Crimea from Ukraine.

Mighty Taco’s posting says Putin may be ordering around Crimea, but he won’t be ordering a Super Mighty, one of the chain’s most popular menu items. The posting, which features a red-tinted photo of a gesticulating Putin, says he’ll be “welcomed back” at Mighty Taco when he stops acting like a bully and “picking on people.”

Cyclist urges care on roads

Ashburton cyclist Shona McGrath is calling for motorists to take care and watch out for others sharing the road.

Ms McGrath was out riding with her granddaughter last week when a motorist suddenly opened the car door in her pathway at the Allenton shopping centre.

Her granddaughter managed to avoid colliding with the car door - but only narrowly.

She swerved out to avoid it and it was lucky there was no vehicle travelling behind her.

“I think there needs to be a lot more awareness from people in cars on how close they are getting to bikes and just especially when they are opening car doors.”

Ms McGrath said the attitude of the female motorist did not help, who when confronted was unapologetic, “didn’t want a bar of it and walked off ”. “(My granddaughter) was very lucky; it could have been quite terrible really.”

The Ashburton woman’s calls come on the back of the death of 22-year-old Christchurch nursing student Sharla Phyllis Haerewa, who was killed in a crash on Lincoln Road, in Christchurch last Wednesday.

Ms Haerewa was cycling to work at 6.40am when she was knocked off her bike by a truck. The truck dragged her bike almost 40 metres before it stopped.

Ms McGrath has been a cyclist for 20 years and even though she was safety-conscious, wearing bright riding gear and aware of other road users, she had been knocked off her bike three times.

One driver went through a stop sign and hit her, another when a vehicle turned left into her and another when a truck driver carrying a wide load didn’t see her.

There were reasons for both cyclists and motorists to be aware and a mutual respect to be shown on the roads.

“All the time you’re just looking to see what other people are going to do.

“I think it just comes down to respect both ways. Cyclists be responsible (for yourself) but motorists just need to be careful in town.”

Drivers speeding up to get in front of cyclists, not seeing them at intersections, roundabouts and people getting out of cars were major problems.

She said more often trucks were respectful, going wide or slowing down behind cyclists before passing.

But some drivers were the opposite, almost trying to pass as close as they could.

“It’s almost like they zoom into you, when you can feel the hairs on the back of your arms prickle up; it’s almost like a daredevil attitude.

“I think we deserve as much right on the road as people in cars.”

The sights, the steam, the smells were all part of the thrill at The Plains Vintage Railway and Historical Museum’s open day yesterday.

The Plains was open for family fun entertainment and while the weather may have put a damper on attendance, those who braved the drizzle were not disappointed.

The K88 locomotive was up and running, the motorised jigger roared into action and the Ashburton Steam and Model Engineering Club had their model train track open for business.

Working in the ticketing office, Plains Railway volunteer Lorayne Oakley expected two visiting tour groups, one from Australia and one from Christchurch, would keep them busy towards the end of the day.

She said the next open day was on April 27 before the final one of the season on May 3.

It would be timed for the beginning of Wheels Week and the annual Vintage Car Club swap meet down the road.

Entry to The Plains was by donation and there was a cost for the train rides.

However, on site the museum buildings were open, as well as the woodturning museum.

Police are treating a fire that destroyed possessions stored in a Wellington storage facility on Friday as suspicious. It started about 12.45am on Friday and reached a “fifth alarm” - the most extreme end of the Fire Service’s response scale. Rotarians converge on district

The Rotarian District 9970 South Island Conference drew to a close yesterday with many attendees taking a trip around the district.

A variety of post conference trips were on offer to showcase the area to people.

The current District Governor was John Rickard from Mid Canterbury and the conference theme was The taste of Mid Canterbury.

Organisers wanted to showcase a number of Mid Canterbury highlights and during the conference had local mini speakers and performers.

The tours included a 4WD experience around the Mt Winterslow area, a tour of Trott’s Garden, wine tasting, a Lake Hood tour, a visit to Five Star Beef, a farm visit, the Aviation Museum and the Plains Vintage Railway.

Attendees could choose the tour package that interested them.

Mr Rickard said the conference got rave reviews from attendees and some said it was the best conference for many years.

He said they were impressed by the support from the local community and had “been blown away” by the talent of members of The Summer Singing School who performed a concert for the conference members’ final evening.

Air New Zealand’s first Dreamliner rolled out of the hangar in Seattle yesterday - a stunning debutant meeting the public eye in sheer black with a huge white fern draped along its side. It was famously late for its date with Air New Zealand - production delays pushing delivery back from as long ago as late-2010. But with the aircraft’s final paint job completed in recent days, and the internal cabin fittings now to be done along with flight tests and certification, Air New Zealand expects to take delivery in July.

The plane is painted black with a white fern extending along the back half of the fuselage and the airline’s insignia koru in white on the tail.

Body in Hamilton A body was discovered in a Hamilton suburb yesterday, police say. Emergency services were called by a member of the public, who made the discovery about 2.30pm, Inspector Andy Brill of northern police communications said. It was found in the suburb of Riverlea, across from Hammond Park, he said.

A man who was found with gunshot wounds in west Auckland on Saturday night is in custody and under guard in Auckland Hospital after allegedly shooting himself in the leg. The 32-yearold man received surgery to his leg injuries on Saturday night.

Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident. The man was discovered by a passing police patrol on the Great North Rd, Henderson, around 6.30pm.

A scene examination took place, closing the road for around two hours.

ments following an alleged robbery and assault on them by a 38-year-old Otaki man on the West Coast last weekend.

sent to us in this situation. We still believe in the good (God) in everything and still feel that New Zealand is one of the most beautiful and peaceful countries on this planet.

The 28-year-old German woman and the 27-year-old

woman of Japanese/Dutch origin were found stabbed and badly injured at Franz Josef, late last Sunday afternoon.

They were initially seen at Grey Base Hospital, but were transferred to Christchurch Hospital for further treatment.

“As soon as we recover and have had enough rest we’d love to travel on, here and anywhere.

It’s good to be alive.”

The 38-year-old man was arrested following a police chase and stand-off in South Westland with police. Police are also investigating the man’s link to the discovery of 24-year-old Amy Farrall whose body was found in a car boot at Woolston the same day. The man was known to the deceased woman.

Cyclist dies in collision A cyclist in her early 50s was killed when her bike and a semitrailer truck collided in Palmerston North yesterday.

The crash happened on Summerhill Drive just after 7am, Acting Detective Sergeant Shelley Ross of the Manawatu CIB said.

Both the cyclist and the truck were travelling up the road when the collision happened, she said.

The woman died at the scene.

Police were speaking to the truck driver who did not suffer any injuries but was shaken by the crash.

“We are still in the process of piecing together what factors have led to the crash and it is too early at this stage to comment on any potential charges.

“The Serious Crash Unit is investigating and officers are continuing to make inquiries and speak to witnesses,” Ms Ross said.

Police would not release any further details about the woman until her next of kin has been informed.

The Ashburton Fanciers’ Society annual auction attracted good interest yesterday as hundreds of birds went under the hammer.

The auction was in its 22nd year. Society secretary-treasurer Brian Glassey said from 700 to 800 birds were auctioned with a variety of birds and breeds represented.

The only South Island event

of its type, it attracted people from far and wide.

The birds were sold in lots of three and last year the top price fetched was around $150 a lot.

Mr Glassey said now was the best time of year for breeders

to get rid of any excess stock and for members of the public to pick up birds.

Members had noted an increase in the number of birds wanted with more people living on lifestyle block sections.

■ SERIAL STALKER

Freedom near for NZ’s worst serial stalker New Zealand’s most prolific serial stalker will soon be freed from jail because his sentence will end, and officials have no choice but to release him.

Glenn Green has been jailed 45 times and suffers from erotomania - believing someone, usually a stranger or high-profile person, is in love with them.

He becomes fixated on women he sees on the street or in magazines, and harasses them by writing “abusive” and “frightening” letters and text messages, calling them and sitting outside their homes, and there are fears he will reoffend.

Green, who uses several aliases, has 201 convictions spanning 26 years.

They include criminal harassment, perverting the course of justice, breaching protection orders and misuse of a telephone.

Green is to be released on June 7 after completing a 30-month prison sentence for

criminal harassment.

He was earlier denied parole because he was deemed a risk to the community.

He will meet the parole board this month, and release conditions for up to six months may be set.

A victim stalked since she was a teenager told the Herald on Sunday she feared Green’s offending would escalate.

The woman hoped he had benefited from psychological

treatment while in prison.

“You can say nothing to him for months, for years; and he’s conjured up a marriage, two kids and a weekend in Hawaii,” she said.

“You can’t say anything to him because he’s driven by his own imagination.”

Forensic psychiatrist Dr David Chaplow said those traits were the hallmarks of a person suffering erotomania.

“It’s quite rare and what usually happens is, a person begins to believe in a delusional sense that somebody is in love with them,” he said.

“Usually these are prominent people in their lives such as doctors or possibly news reporters and policemen.”

Private investigator Daniel Thompson-Toresen has worked for three of Green’s victims and fears for their safety.

“I think I would be very surprised if he has been rehabilitated in that time, and I would

stress my concern for the safety for the well-being of the victims, particularly the ones I’ve had dealings with.”

Green was denied parole in October 2012 because he presented an “undue risk to the safety of the community” and had “an absolute disregard for court orders”.

He waived his right to appear at a second hearing last October, when the board recommended that he have individual psychological treatment to address his risk and to develop a safety plan.

During his sentencing, Green’s lawyer, Geoffrey Anderson, said his client was a “very lonely person who probably craves contact and friendship but has little ability to develop them in a healthy way that is mutually satisfying”.

He also had little support, no coping skills and he felt overwhelmed when released into the community.

Police will rely on a man’s dental records to confirm his identity after his body was found badly mutilated in east Auckland.

The man was killed in a violent attack about 11.45pm at Merton Village, St Johns - a cluster of Housing New Zealand units for pensioners - and a man has been charged with murder.

Police say they believe the victim is a 77-year-old Glen Innes resident but they have yet to formally identify him. It is understood the man’s body was unrecognisable.

One resident at the village, who asked not to be named, was unaware there had been a murder and said residents were “frustrated” they hadn’t been told why there was a crime scene cordon.

“I was watching Coronation St and Rambo and then I heard this noise outside and it was the police and they wouldn’t tell us anything,” he said.

“We never have any incidents here, we’re all pensioners, we’re all gold carders.

“It’s so quiet out here, sometimes you’ve got to knock on the door to see if anybody is alive.”

Resident Zijab Garibovic, 70, has been charged with murder and will appear in court today after undergoing a mental health evaluation.

Garibovic, understood to be a Russian immigrant, speaks no English and needs an interpreter.

Another resident said the accused had lived in his unit since 2010 but kept to himself because he struggled to speak English.

“Now and again, he would say hello and I’d say hello back,” she said.

Residents said he frequently drank with another pensioner living at the complex.

Police were on Saturday completing a scene examination and were looking for objects in trees and under cars.

Detective Senior Sergeant Aaron Pascoe said it was clear that something violent occurred.

“However, we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident,” he said.

Police were also notifying the man’s next of kin.

Thousands EA Networks staff get homeless in the wellness once-over Solomons

Tens of thousands of people in and around the Solomon Islands’ capital Honiara have been left homeless by flash flooding and heavy rains.

Entire communities had been swept away, major access bridges had collapsed and roads had been destroyed with areas of the city isolated by the destruction, charity organisation Oxfam said.

About 14,000 people and 14 communities had been affected by the flooding in Honiara, with 12,000 people seeking refuge in 16 evacuation centres set up around the region, according to Oxfam.

The death toll was at 31 and dozens more were reported missing, with numbers expected to rise, Oxfam’s Solomon Islands’ country director Katie Greenwood said.

Another 37,000 had been affected by the flooding in Guadalcanal province.

A state of emergency remains in place for Honiara City and Guadalcanal province.

Oxfam was providing support to the Red Cross to manage the evacuation centres, which had been inundated with people, Ms Greenwood said.

“Around 20 per cent of Honiara’s population are now in the evacuation centres, with 3500 in just one centre alone.

“We are facing enormous

numbers here. The centres have been inundated with people who have lost their homes and their communities,” she said.

Oxfam was also providing technical support and assistance, and remained on standby to help the National Disaster Management Office carry out disaster assessments of the region.

“We have relief items ready for distribution, and we are working to identify how we can support life saving efforts in the next stage of the government’s response to this disaster,” Foreign Minister Murray McCully said today that New Zealand would send an air Force Hercules with emergency relief to the Solomons tomorrow morning.

As well as supplies, it would take emergency response staff from government agencies and non-government organisations.

New Zealand’s initial $300,000 in emergency funding was going to World Vision and Oxfam which were distributing essential supplies there, Mr McCully said.

“We will continue to work with the authorities in the Solomon Islands and further support will be considered as the full extent of the damage becomes clear,” he said.

If any concerns were noted, staff were then referred to experts for their own follow-up. It was the second year skin checks were organised.

EA Networks general manager Gordon Guthrie said people were the important factor of every aspect at the company.

He said “it was the sensible thing to do” to keep them healthy and at work.

“It’s good to keep the team productive and working rather than being at home in bed.”

Mr Guthrie said under the wellness umbrella staff also had annual influenza vaccinations and biennial hearing checks for those exposed to noise hazards.

They were also informed on issues such as sleep patterns and tiredness effects.

“If they are fit for work they are less harm to themselves,” he said.

Plunket is in the hot seat after breaching its own infant safety guidelines by installing Prince George’s child restraint backto-front in the royal limo.

The baby-care agency issued photos of preparations for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s visit, showing Plunket car seat services technician Aethalia O’Connor installing a seat in the car to be used by the royals.

“If it can’t be installed correctly we need to work out a

way we can make it correct,” she said. “We need to make sure the baby is safe.”

The problem was, the car seat was installed facing forward, at odds with Plunket’s official guidelines.

To limit the risk of whiplash, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends children remain rear-facing until age 2 or until they reach the seat’s height limit.

Response to the photo was immediate, with dozens of parents going online to point out Plunket’s double standard.

Plunket has previously criticised photos of babies in forward-facing restraints, but on Saturday it was unapologetic.

Chief executive Jenny Prince said Plunket’s role was “to provide advice and work in partnership with parents” to make informed decisions that worked best for them. “Plunket’s priority is to ensure car seats are installed by qualified car seat technicians to ensure they perform correctly. While Plunket recommend that children stay in rearfacing seats until age 2, it is not a legal requirement.”

Plunket spokesman Zac Prendergast said he had spoken to O’Connor, and the seat was installed in line with the parents’ preferences.

Last year, the Herald on Sunday reported random roadside checks by Plunket and police found up to 80 per cent of child restraints were installed incorrectly.

Tots on Tour child restraint technician Lucy Wilkinson said many parents were still unaware of the dangers of placing their toddlers in a forward-facing seat.

T

he announcement of the new development between Burnett, Cass and Tancred Streets is terrific news for Ashburton.

The immense 9000m2 site will replace a dozen buildings and businesses east of the Arcade that have been demolished or are about to be torn down.

Aside from the Braided Rivers complex and one council-owned complex that will be redeveloped, the other 18 titles will be combined to create a modern business and retail centre, Eastfield.

The council has been working for years to get land owners, developers, builders and architects to work in tandem, to avoid a hideous CBD filled with bitsand-bobs businesses.

Instead, the block between Burnett and Tancred Street could be complementing the new Arcade shopping precinct.

Together this new retail area has the potential to revitalise the centre of Ashburton and become a destination for shoppers from around the district and beyond.

Even though all parties will still have to cross several bridges before they can present the new design, the basic principle of their co-operation and combined vision is the most important first step.

It is a breath of fresh air to hear about plans for a new complex while the Stewart and Holland building is still being torn down.

This is a stark contrast to many areas in Christchurch where a lack of co-operation and decision-making and an abundance of red tape, has created thousands of square metres of empty lots of dust and rubble.

Ashburton also has a few bare spots, like the former Westburn Courts site that desperately needs a vision and some action to fill this gaping hole on West Street.

Even though we yet have to see what the vision for Eastfield will look like, the fact that all owners are long-term Ashburton residents should create some confidence that they have the best interests of the community at heart, along with their commercial needs.

As we await the designs, they need to be congratulated for this significant move for the future of Ashburton.

he Government is focused on creating greater opportunities for all New Zealanders.

We’re forging ahead with our clear plan to build a more productive and competitive economy, one of National’s priorities this term.

When we talk about the economy – about things like GDP and the balance of payments – we’re ultimately talking about people’s jobs, their wages, and the costs they face in going about their daily lives and raising their families.

That’s why on April 1 a number of positive changes kicked into action.

Reduced ACC levies have now taken effect. This means the average household will save about $200 a year, small businesses will save about $180 a year, and large employers will save on average $6000 a year in total.

For New Zealanders, collectively we’ll be better off to the tune of $387 million.

In 2011, we legislated to make sure benefit and superannuation payments increased each year to keep in line with inflation.

We were the first government to legislate for payment rates to keep pace with the cost of living, despite challenging financial conditions at the time.

This means people receiving benefits and superannuation will get more in the hand, as those rates increased on April 1 as well.

Benefits, student allowances, student loan living costs, and the Foster Care Allowance all went up by 1.38 per cent, in line with inflation.

Three ‘acoustic events’ A Chinese ship twice detected a “pulse signal” at a frequency used by aircraft black boxes, while an Australian vessel is investigating a separate “acoustic noise” in the search for flight MH370.

Retired Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, who is coordinating the search, told reporters in Perth yesterday the Chinese ship Haixun 01 had detected two “acoustic events” which provided “some promise” and required a full investigation.

The first signal was detected on Friday and the second, which lasted 90 seconds, was detected on Saturday within two kilometres of the original detection.

“This is an important and encouraging lead but one which I urge you to continue to treat carefully,” Air Chief Marshal Houston said.

He warned no signals or objects found in the ocean had been verified as being from the missing Malaysia Airlines plane.

British naval ship HMS Echo would arrive in the search zone in about 14 hours, he said.

Australian naval vessel Ocean Shield is looking at another “acoustic noise” in a separate area and will go to the zone when that task is completed.

Air Chief Marshal Houston said he only learned about Ocean Shield’s detection on Sunday morning and it could be a couple of days until the search was resolved.

“We will pursue these leads to their conclusion,” he said.

Air Chief Marshal Houston said there had been “fleeting acoustic events” rather than a continuous transmission.

“If you get close to the device, we should be receiving it for a longer period of time than just a fleeting encounter,” he said.

“But we’ve got a transmission (so) we must investigate it.”

Missile threat Japan’s defence chief has ordered the armed forces to shoot down any North Korean ballistic missiles that threaten to hit the country.

Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera issued the order on Thursday without publicly announcing it - after North Korea launched two medium-range ballistic missiles on March 26 towards the Sea of Japan (East Sea), Kyodo News and other media said yesterday, quoting a government source.

A mid-range missile fired from North Korea would be capable of reaching Japan. Under the order, the country’s so-called SelfDefence Forces will destroy North Korean ballistic missiles “if any are launched and threaten to fall within Japanese territory”, Kyodo said.

16 die in truck crash At least 16 people have been killed and 49 injured when an overloaded truck crashed into a ravine in Pakistan’s central province of Punjab. The accident happened on Saturday near the town of Kalar Kahar, which lies 155km south of the capital Islamabad.

“The incident took place at Mattan village when a pickup truck carrying 65 passengers fell in a ravine due to being overload,” said Imran Akhtar, an official at the rescue control room. “Six-teen people have died and 49 were injured including women and children,” he said. The injured were taken to a nearby government rural health centre, he said, warning that the clinic was ill-equipped to deal with with the dozens of casualties.

“The rural health centre lacks facilities and I fear the death toll might rise,” he said.

In most corners of the world, an Ashburton person can be found. So the Guardian’s Erin Tasker decided to track some of them down. This week it’s Kalem Banks who lives in Norway, where he’s found the country and the people to be beautiful.

alem Banks doesn’t have a good answer for why he lives in Norway.

He doesn’t know why he went there a year ago, but he’s still there and loves living there.

When he finished university he knew he wanted to travel to Europe, but said he never had a clear picture of where he wanted to go.

He ended up in Norway, and loves it. Kalem lives in Bergen, a port city on the west coast of Norway, where he works in a bike shop.

“I call it a city but it feels a lot like a town; probably because Norwegians are so well behaved.

“The city itself feels rather small, but the limits stretch quite far, so there are a lot of parts to explore).

“And exploring is what must be done. It’s beautiful nature here; the city is surrounded by seven mountains for your leisure, running, biking, hiking and camping.”

He’s also explored by boat, going on a sailing trip from northern France to the Canary Islands, Spain.

“That was for fun, with a Norwegian I met. It was a 32foot plastic boat and we visited France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco and the Canary Islands over a three or four month period,” Kalem said.

During that trip he found himself with time on his hands.

So he took to writing a blog about his experiences.

“I am not a writer, but I needed a project whilst out at sea. You have a lot of spare time during long sailing trips, so writing gave me a sense of achievement - other than surviving the passage.”

He also travelled North America and some of Europe before settling on Norway.

“Before leaving New Zealand Norway was one of a few options, but fate decided Norway.

I actually took the fact I met a lot of Norwegians in Hawaii as a sign it was the place I should go,” he said.

Europe is a great place for sports nuts.

“I am into sports so there are two spots that really stick out.

The Algave, Portugal - for its amazing beaches - and I love the Portugese – and the French Alps for skiing.”

Back in Norway, he and partner Elise love to go camping, and together they run a B&B, while Kalem works in a bike shop by day.

“The bike shop is a job that

took me a long time to find.

It’s hard to get a job here not speaking Norwegian, so I was really lucky last year with that.”

Kalem is the son of Ashburton woman Shona McGrath, well known for her efforts on the cycling track, but Kalem isn’t as keen a cyclist as his mum. He says it’s just ironic that he happens to work in a bike shop.

Being on the other side of the world means that getting home to New Zealand regularly isn’t easy, and there are things he misses about life in New Zealand.

“I have not been home for a little while. The things I miss the most is the option to do anything. In New Zealand you can really do it all, and do it cheap. The country is small so you can easily get to the beach, mountains or play golf.

“A big part of that I guess is connections, but in New Zealand the convenience and ability to do everything affordably is what I miss.

“Of course I miss my friends and family too, but I know I will be back soon.”

For now though, Bergen is home. Bergen is most famous for its rain, receiving around 80 inches of it a year, and it also has sun at midnight - something that Kalem found a little strange at first. But now he’s used to it.

“Midnight sun is something crazy. I love to stay up late at night so to have 24 hours of daylight I think takes that piece of sweet cake,” he said.

Living abroad does come with some worries though – like if you get injured and don’t have insurance, which has happened to Kalem twice. Once – in Norway – when he got an infected finger from hitting it with a hammer, resulting in a trip to hospital, and a broken arm in London on New Year’s Eve. Fortunately, despite fears they could spell the end of his living abroad, both had positive outcomes, Kalem said.

mined ideas of what Norway’s going to be like, he said.

“There are things you will consistently hear about Norway and I’ll confirm the general things first. Yes, it is a very expensive country, the women here are beautiful and yes, the nature here is New Zealand like.

“It is not incredibly cold, Norwegians speak amazing English, they are a friendly bunch - and this, I think, is one of the most misguided conceptions. People often say Norwegians are closed. I disagree and just say they are just a little particular.

“Their social norms are somewhat different, but just like New Zealand they love to binge drink.”

It’s the perfect place for him to call home for now.

“I love living here. I have a good mix of international and local friends. I am dating a Norwegian girl and we have plenty on our plate to keep entertained,” Kalem said.

I

have an uneasy relationship with trains.

For large chunks of the 1970s and ’80s I travelled daily from home deep in the Sussex countryside to London on what was then British Rail.

It was only when I stopped doing it that I realised how dreadful it was - queueing to get into the carpark, queueing to buy a ticket, queueing to get onto the train, and, as often as not, standing all the way to London.

It was the era of militant unionism, the Winter of Discontent, and, it has to be said, an era of great British inefficiency, especially on the trains.

They almost never ran on time. Delays were endemic - excuses bordering on the comical.

“Leaves on the line” was a favourite, and despite earnest explanations of how a build-up of autumn leaves could indeed force train wheels to slip, burn and lose their shape, I can’t believe it was beyond a solution.

It was also the era that inspired David Nobbs to write the wonderfully funny and touching novel The Fall And Rise Of Reginald Perrin - a tale of a British businessman driven out of his mind by his job and the daily rail commute.

It became a hit TV series, starring Leonard Rossiter, and

All of this is by way of explaining my trepidation in parting with the hard-earned to take a 28-hour train trip across South Africa.

The journey began in Cape Town and ended 1530km later in Johannesburg.

It was, as the brochures had promised, a brilliant way to get the feel of the African landscape - from the astonishing vineyards surrounding Cape Town, through dramatic and glowering mountain passes and up onto the Karoo, the semi-desert plain of central South Africa.

And then, tunnelling through the night past De Aar, Kimberley and into Klerksdorp at dawn.

From there, it was an easy run into Jo’burg.

I looked at taking the famed Blue Train, which runs along the same route, but it was way beyond my budget. In any case, I didn’t want that much luxury.

Late charge gets Celtic home

Celtic made a winning start to the Combined Country Cup rugby competition on Saturday, and also claimed crucial Watters Cup points in beating Southern 27-15.

Southern made the stronger start and led at halftime, but the home side stormed home with three second half tries for the bonus point win.

by Kyle Brown and a penalty gave Southern a 10-8 lead with centre Gasolo Salima scoring the try for Celtic and wing Tevita Tupou converting a penalty.

In the second half Southern were able to put wing Levi Hart over for an early try but spent the rest the majority of the half on defence.

Celtic newcomer John Galbraith’s tactical kicking steered the side around the park and they were able to put Will Hintz, Matt Winter and Dominic Vicaio over for tries with Tupou adding two conversions.

“Southern really took it to us at the start and it felt like we hadn’t played the first half,” Celtic coach Warren McKenzie said. “In the second half we concentrated on getting the ball down the right end, and with that territory and possession we were able to put points on the board.”

Over in section one Rakaia and Methven couldn’t be separated in the Watters Cup final replay although both sides had opportunities to open the combined competition with a win instead of a 17-all draw.

at goal and Rakaia missed a long range penalty inside the final 10 minutes to leave both sides frustrated at the stalemate.

The visitors outscored the hosts two tries to one but were left to rue a high penalty count, even though Rakaia were presented with two yellow cards.

A try to flanker Seta Koroitamana and three Andrew Fluker penalties gave Rakaia a 14-3 halftime lead, after Dan Maw put Methven on the board.

Elsewhere in section two, Waihora claimed the biggest win of the day accounting for Ohoka 48-0, Glenmark got home over Saracens 17-16 and Lincoln beat the new amalgamate Burnham-Dunsandel-Irwell 28-7.

Chiefs scramble to another unlikely draw

BY KRIS SHANNON It sounds paradoxical but the Chiefs should return from their winless road trip with a big boost in confidence.

A remarkable week of rugby that produced a pair of draws will leave the defending champions feeling both bitterly disappointed and strangely buoyed.

Those who view the glass as half empty will see the 4343 draw with the Cheetahs on Sunday morning as two competition points lost, rather than three won, and coach Dave Rennie did indicate his unhappiness after earlier in the week describing victory as essential.

But Rennie might reflect on the flight home about the posi-

tives gleaned from a rather extraordinary road trip.

After all, the South African tour is behind them, they have a four-point lead atop the New Zealand conference and, more importantly, they know no lead is insurmountable.

Equally, teams facing the Chiefs will never feel safe while in front, not after the Highland-

ers, Bulls and now Cheetahs have watched helplessly as the Chiefs’ vaunted backline responded to whatever challenge had been set.

By the time their next match rolls around on Saturday night, the Chiefs would have gone a month without tasting victory, but not all winless streaks are created equal.

Read set for welcome return

By Patrick Mckendry A conservative, kick-first, mentality got the Crusaders comfortably home against the Lions in Johannesburg but they feel they will need a more open game against the Cheetahs next weekend and the expected return of Kieran Read should help that.

Coach Todd Blackadder, delighted that his men carried out his game plan to the letter in the 28-9 victory at Ellis Park yesterday, said he expects his No8 and captain Read to return from concussion to play at Free State Stadium.

It will be a timely return Luke Whitelock injured his knee against the Lions and will be out for a week at least.

First-five Colin Slade was the other casualty - a head knock forcing him to leave the field.

Midfielder Ryan Crotty captained the team in Read’s absence and played a starring role in his team’s most convincing victory of the season.

Halfback Andy Ellis, another try scorer, was also instrumental, but having IRB player of the year Read back at the helm will be a huge boost.

“He’s got a couple of tests still to go with the doctor but he’s feeling really good,” Blackadder said.

“The good news is I’m pretty certain to say he’s going to be good to go next week.”

The Crusaders strangled the Lions in the first half, the home side responding after the break with its rolling maul but by then the damage had been done.

Their lineout, a traditional strength, quickly lost confidence following the constant attacks from Sam Whitelock and Dominic Bird.

“We went in with a strategy and probably for the very first time we’ve managed to execute a game plan,” Blackadder said.

“The Cheetahs are a different

side. They showed what they can do against the Chiefs. We probably went into this game lacking a wee bit of confidence.

“Next week we’ll really be looking to open up. We can’t underestimate the significance of tonight. Psychologically I think we’ve turned a corner and we need to go forward.”

The Cheetahs, while ranked below the Crusaders on the table, have often posed challenges to Blackadder’s men in Bloemfontein, but he said they

had acknowledged that and the fact they were on the brink of something.

With this victory they set a record by becoming the first New Zealand team to win in South Africa this year but Blackadder has never presided over an unbeaten tour of the republic.

“The guys brought that up in the changing room themselves,” Blackadder said of the Cheetahs’ hoodoo. “There’s a massive challenge this week to turn around a lot of poor form.”

Warriors’ owners want answers The heat will come on Warriors coach Matt Elliott this week and owner Eric Watson is the first who wants some answers.

The Warriors were awful in their 37-6 defeat to the previously winless Sharks on Saturday.

They were their own worst enemies as they completed just 58 per cent of their sets, made 16 errors and missed 21 tackles.

The upshot was they were forced to make 112 more tackles than the Sharks and teams simply can’t do that and hope to win.

It raises questions about Elliott’s ability to get the best out of his side.

They have done it at times, winning seven out of eight last year and also consecutive games this year, but have also lost horribly on occasion and Watson’s patience seems to be wearing thin.

Watson and co-owner Owen Glenn want to turn the Warriors into the “best single sporting franchise in Australasia” and have invested heavily to try to achieve that. They won’t come close until the team bring success to Mt Smart Stadium, and that presently seems more of a dream than reality.

The top coaches demand respect from and have the right chemistry with their players and there have been whispers of discontent within the Warriors’ playing group.

Elliott’s not the one making the mistakes on the park but he is the one who is the most accountable and who needs to get the buy-in from his players.

“That’s a legitimate question and one that needs to be asked,” Elliott told the Herald when asked if he felt his players played for him. “This inconsistent tag is not unique to me, either.”

The Warriors have been inconsistent throughout their history but seemed to be turning a corner under Ivan Cleary.

They went through some dry patches when he was coach but often their defeats were by close margins.

Their performances in their

three defeats in 2014 have been inept and after Saturday they had the worst defensive record and second-worst points differential in the NRL. Elliott’s contract expires at the end of the season and Wigan coach Shaun Wane has repeatedly been linked with the Warriors. The owners will want to see progress soon if they are to offer Elliott a new deal.

They are one of the best resourced clubs in the NRL, but the only true measure is what happens on the field.

And that is Elliott’s responsibility.

Ben Te’o admits South Sydney’s poor run of form was a result of the players believing their own publicity. The Rabbitohs ended a run of three straight losses with a comfortable 26-6 win over St George Illawarra on Saturday at the SCG and the Queensland backrower admitted it was vital result for a side that was tipped to be premiership contenders this year.

Second concussion Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart says the club’s medical staff will continue to monitor Joel Edwards after the second-rower suffered concussion for the second straight week. Edwards collided with the shoulder of two-try debutant Dallin Watene-Zelezniak in the early minutes of Saturday night’s match at Penrith, won 12-6 by the Panthers in terrible weather conditions. “I spoke to him at halftime and he was actually pretty good, he had his memory and everything in regards to the game.

Elliott under threat?

The Warriors are set to sack coach Matt Elliott, according to an Australian media report. CourierMail league reporter Chris Garry said it was understood Elliott was told that the Warriors wanted to “move in a different direction” following the club’s 37-6 loss to Cronulla yesterday. A formal decision was expected in coming days. Warriors management felt the side’s display against Cronulla was proof Elliott’s coaching style was not worth long-term perseverance, according to the Courier-Mail report.

Tigers smash Manly Wests Tigers have handed Manly a wet weather footballing lesson in a 34-18 win at a sodden Leichhardt Oval yesterday. The Tigers totally dominated the first half, scoring four-tries-to-one and went to the sheds ahead 26-6 after a late Jamie Lyon try that gave the Sea Eagles some hope of a comeback.

Relegation threat a new feature

Defending premiers Celtic started their title defence with a convincing 35-18 win over Hampstead in a rain-affected start to the new-look netball season.

Netball’s new structure had the senior sides go straight into a premier grade for the top six sides where the bottom side is set to be relegated to senior A at the end of the round.

The top six is then finalised after a second round with the third round being the tro-

phy round that will ultimately crown the premier champion.

After an unbeaten season last year Celtic made it 15 wins in a row as they beat Hampstead by 17 goals to start 2014 at the team to beat from day one.

Hampstead coach Cindy Meadows wasn’t making any rash judgements after one game, but said that with the “exciting new format” there was “a lot more pressure to perform each week” with the threat of relegation.

After the premiers started the season with a win College A re-

corded the biggest upset of the day, accounting for 2013 runners up Methven 32-17.

The school girls took control early on and raced to a commanding 20-7 halftime lead which they were able to convert into a 15-goal win.

“It wasn’t what we were expecting at all,” College A coach Angela Mitchell said.

“We were expecting a tight tussle.

“We knew they had some changes over the summer but still had plenty of experience in their side.

“Obviously we were pleased with the start.”

In the other premier match United A comfortably beat College B 30-10.

With no grading the goal in round one of the premier competition will be to avoid relegation, while the senior A sides fight for promotion for the second round.

In Senior A Collegiate accounted for Celtic C 35-18, Methven B got the better of Celtic B 23-16 and Rakaia took care of Allenton with a 30-19 victory.

Defence fails Phoenix yet again By kris shannon The Wellington Phoenix will again miss the A-League playoffs after being beaten by Sydney FC in a game marked by the contrasting contributions of Alessandro Del Piero.

Needing several results to fall their way to sneak into the finals, the Phoenix failed to take care of their own business, leaking another four goals in a sea-

son marred by a porous defence.

The Phoenix have conceded a competition-high 47 with one game to play, a record that was unlikely to result in a return to the playoffs for the first time since 2012.

That prospect has appeared improbable for the last few weeks and any glimmer of hope was extinguished last night in Sydney, with Del Piero proving decisive.

The 39-year-old is nearing

the end of his stint downunder and his performance, both good and bad, would be an appropriate way to conclude his Sydney career.

First there was his penalty, a blatant dive befitting the waterlogged Allianz Stadium pitch.

Then there were two brilliant free kicks, one finding the top corner and the other the bar.

The Italian still found time

to chime in with a sumptuous assist, showing a quality the Phoenix defence was unable to contain.

Any designs that the visitors had on a comeback late in the game were quickly dashed by two stunning goals from Sydney.

All that remained was a moment steeped in irony - Del Piero being booked for simulation an hour too late.

First win for Ford

By Ben McKay Mark Winterbottom has scored his first V8 Supercars win since last year’s Bathurst 1000 at Winton in country Victoria.

Winterbottom’s victory yesterday - ahead of James Courtney and Tim Slade - was also Ford’s first win for the season.

Five drivers were given drivethrough penalties for speeding in the pit lane, including Kiwis Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard, as they were challenging for the race lead.

McLaughlin started from pole - becoming Volvo’s first polesitter since returning to the championship - and charged off for an early lead ahead of Shane Van Gisbergen.

But Van Gisbergen’s Holden struggled for pace and kept the field from making up time on McLaughlin until Winterbottom make a successful pass on lap four.

Winterbottom made up the 3.5-second gap on the leader, shadowing McLaughlin’s car for several laps before finally passing on lap 20 of the 67-lap race.

Aside from spells behind Van Gisbergen when the drivers’ pit strategies gave him the edge,

Coulthard’s team owner Brad Jones said the punishment may not fit the crime.

“It’s so tight ... maybe he might have been a kilometre or two over,” he said. “It seems an expensive price to pay.”

In a race devoid of any major incidents, the biggest bust-up came early in the race between the two Holden Racing Team drivers.

Jason Bright and David Wood had an altercation on lap nine,

with Bright nudging Wood off the track. While Wood’s offroad excursion allowed him to take a shortcut and re-enter the field ahead of Bright, he finished several laps behind the rest of the field.

The win takes Winterbottom to second in the championship standings behind Craig Lowndes - AAP who finished seventh.

The two heavyweights of the sport predictably dominated the opening round of the world series, treating the crowd lining the city streets to a masterclass. The women’s race was also dominated by the big names, with world No.2 Jodie Stimpson of Great Britain taking out top spot after following Kiwis Nicky Samuels and Kate McIlroy in a break-away on the bike leg. Sailors strike gold New Zealand’s two world champion sailing teams have both won gold medals at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Palma in Mallorca yesterday.

Peter Burling and Blair Tuke secured the 49er gold with ease, while Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie came from behind to topple the French leaders and take the Women’s 470 gold on the final day. Another three kiwis crews also finished in the top ten including Andy Maloney, Sam Meech (Laser) and Paul SnowHansen and Daniel Willcox (Men’s 470). With Camille Lecointre and Helene DeFrance seven points out in the front, and just one race to run, the Women’s 470 gold looked like a tough ask for Aleh and Powrie, but with no-one able to catch them for silver the Kiwis had nothing to lose and they went out and won the medal race.

Hampstead welcomed the new Hampstead-Collegians women’s side to the Mid-South Canterbury hockey competition with a 2-0 loss in Ashburton on Saturday.

Hampstead had a few key players missing on the day, but still boasted a far more experienced squad than the teenage Hampstead-Collegians, and managed to score a goal in each for the win, while the new girls held their own.

A goal from Carys Jones inside the opening 10 minutes put Hampstead in the lead and could have sent the young side into their shell.

Instead it stunned Hampstead-Collegians into action as they were able to tighten up and create some opportunities of their own to go into halftime only 1-0 down.

“A win first up so you have to be pleased with that,” Hampstead’s Karen McIntyre said.

McIntyre was happy enough with the victory, and heaped praise on the performance of her younger opposition who also walked away content with the contest.

“We were all pretty nervous before the game but once we got into it we played some pretty good hockey,” Hampstead-Collegians coach Donna Mealings said.

“It was good from a starting point of view and that we showed we can be competitive, so now we have to build from here.”

In the men’s competition Wakanui Black made it two from two, claiming a bonus point 4-2 win over Cambridge.

Goals from Hugh Copland and Ryan Hampton had the home side up 2-0 at the break, before Black’s Sam Bennett scored from a penalty corner to make it 3-0.

Cambridge hit back only for

Adam Wilson to finish off another penalty corner for the bonus point, with Cambridge able to breach the Black defence once again before the fulltime whistle sounded.

Wakanui Blue took on Tainui in Timaru and came back from a goal down to win 3-1.
