TONI.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

An 18-year-old pedestrian was killed when he was struck by a car just outside Rakaia late on Saturday night. The police have identified him as Danny Mather Hendriks, 18, from Rakaia. Mr Hendriks was struck by the car on Acton Road at 11pm. Acton Road is a rural road located on the outskirts of Rakaia township. It does not have footpaths or lighting. The vehicle involved in the accident stopped and emergency services were called but Mr Hendriks died at the scene. The Rakaia Volunteer Fire Brigade was called in to assist at the accident. However officer in charge Murray Smith was unable to comment. Ashburton police sergeant Bryan Ennis said a female driver had been processed for blood alcohol procedures and police were waiting on results. He said it was too early to know whether any charges would be laid.
