Local man could face life in jail BY

An Ashburton man facing three counts of importing Class A drugs, has been warned by a district court judge that the charges carry a potential sentence of life imprisonment.

Daniel Joseph Wenham, 26, appeared in the Ashburton District Court in front of Judge Joanna Maze yesterday.

Wenham denied three counts of importing the Class A drug methamphetamine, one of importing amphetamines – a Class B drug, and cultivating cannabis.

He admitted charges of possessing methamphetamine, cannabis and equipment to cultivate cannabis. No plea was entered on charges of possessing drug paraphernalia.

The charges were laid by the New Zealand Customs Service, and Wenham was represented by Rupert Glover at yesterday’s appearance. On

behalf of his client, Mr Glover elected trial by jury on all the charges to which not guilty pleas were entered.

The other matters will run alongside these lead charges when the case in heard in the High Court in Timaru.

The Customs Service requested Wenham’s bail conditions included a non-association order with a potential witness, a requirement for him of abstain for using drugs and that he relinquish his passport to the court.

Judge Maze declined to issue the non-association order, because of insufficient evidence there was any risk.

She also turned the request for abstinence down, saying it fell within the requirement to obey the law. However, Wenham must surrender his passport within 24-hours, and was forbidden to apply for any documentation which would allow him to leave the country.

He was remanded on bail pending a case management hearing at the High Court in Timaru in June.

Clooney engaged to lawyer The British law firm that employs George Clooney’s girlfriend Amal Alamuddin has confirmed the couple are engaged and is offering its congratulations. Doughty Street Chambers in London said yesterday it was “delighted” the human rights lawyer and the Oscarwinning heart-throb were to tie the knot.

It was confirming a report at the weekend in the US magazine People that 52-yearold Clooney, one of the world’s most eligible bachelors, and Alamuddin were engaged. Alamuddin, 36, is a Lebanese-born British lawyer specialising in international law and human rights.

Clooney has long shown an interest in human rights issues.

Cold feet for a good cause Going without shoes could be quite difficult for dancer, snowboarder and television personality Hayley Holt (below). But for 24 hours that’s what she will do in a bid to help raise awareness of people around the world who cannot afford a pair of shoes. “I quite enjoy going without shoes, actually, but this is for a good cause,” she said. But Holt, a presenter on sports programme The Crowd Goes Wild, said it would be interesting to see what stories she would be covering today, as it could mean dirty, sore or cold feet.

Queen of clubs nears $1m Teenage New Zealand golf queen Lydia Ko has earned the equivalent of more than $5300 every day since turning professional late last year. Road turns into river

Mid Canterbury’s flooded roads, leaking buildings and power outages can be attributed to a major weather system that dumped more than 90mm of rain over 48 hours.

The deluge is among the heaviest Graham Taylor, of Graham’s Weather Station Ashburton, has seen after confirming this month as the wettest April he has experienced since starting up the station in 2006.

The Ashburton District Council has been busy sending contractors to tend to concerned residents after fielding 106 rain-related calls, of which 54 required contractors.

Council service delivery group manager Neil McCann said the town’s stormwater system was pushed to capacity, but the intermittent nature of the rain allowed water flooding streets and underground systems to subside before further rain.

“Fortunately there were gaps between the rainfall which really was our saving grace ... we have had contractors out on the road responding to any reports of local flooding, which was mainly due to drain blockages caused by leaves at this time of year,” Mr McCann said.

Mr Taylor said for the year to date 410mm of rain had fallen, that’s compared with 247mm for the same period last year.

He recorded 71.1mm on Monday, and about another 20mm yesterday.

After closing Monday, CMP Canterbury reopened yesterday, and places like the Ashburton Library removed buckets after experiencing a few leakage problems through Monday.

Mr McCann said although the stormwater system held up, a study was already under way to find where improvements can be made.

With most of the flooding subsided by yesterday afternoon, Fairton dairy farm manager and part owner Will Grayling estimated 60mm fell in one hour on Monday, and he was now managing the 1700-strong herd carefully to ensure pasture was not damaged.

“It will reduce our production a little bit, but only by a percentage, unlike with some cropping farmers who may unfortunately be talking huge percentages of what they produce,” he said.

Nearby dairy farmer, Michelle Smith-Copland said Christys Road in front of her property and a back paddock “were like ponds” from the rain.

The murder victim at the centre of a Christchurch homicide inquiry was originally from Ashburton.

The man who was found at a Bryndwr address on Sunday, cannot be named due to suppression orders that were put in place when the woman accused of his murder appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Monday.

A 22-year-old woman was

granted interim name suppression and remanded in custody without plea. She will appear in the Christchurch High Court again on May 16.

Details around the murder remain sketchy although neighbours have been quoted that there had been a domestic incident at the address a couple of nights before he was killed.

Detective Inspector Greg Murton said a post-mortem examination was completed yesterday morning but police

would not be discussing the findings.

Scene examinations continued yesterday at the Earnslaw Crescent address where the body was found, and at other locations associated with the incident.

An area canvass in the vicinity of the Bryndwr address was also ongoing, and investigators were continuing to speak to witnesses, neighbours and associates.

Tributes have flowed on the

dead man’s Facebook page following news of his death.

Friends posted messages of shock and disbelief.

“Still can’t believe it. RIP bud fly free x,” one wrote (edited).

“Too soon ... have plenty of good times to remember you by ... could always put a wee grin on our faces with ya out of it ways, views and words,” another said (edited).

Another thanked him for fixing her hair straighteners and stereo.

Fire engulfs complex A major fire has engulfed a former dairy factory complex in Paerata, near Pukekohe. Northern fire communications spokesman Scott Osmond said the fire was currently a third alarm, with about 20 trucks at the blaze. Emergency services were called to the factory complex about 5.30pm last night. A 30 metre by 10 metre building was on fire. Mr Osmond said no one had been injured. The former dairy factory on State Highway 22 is now a business park.

Yacht overdue

The three people believed to be aboard the yacht Munetra, missing near Bluff, have been identified by Invercargill police. The 7.5 metre yacht was last heard from on April 16 when it left Bluff headed for Preservation Inlet at the southwest of the South Island. Munetra was reported missing to police last Thursday. Two of the three people on board are German citizens who were visiting New Zealand on a gap year after finishing school.

They are Lea Tietz and Veronika Steudler, both aged 19, from the district of Gorlitz in Germany.

The skipper of the yacht is also a German, who has been living in New Zealand for about four years and has been working on a dairy farm in Central Southland. He is Andre Kinzler aged 33.

Eleven-year-old Lucas Parker is stoked with the progress of his wind chime creation.

Lucas was taking part in one of the Kids DIY Clinics run by Mitre 10 Mega yesterday.

Just a few children took advantage of the free holiday programme putting together their own wind chime creations using driftwood, keys, ribbon and nylon line.

Most of the children followed a similar pattern and used a hand drill to bore holes into driftwood before threading nylon line and attaching keys – as many keys as their designs needed.

Cathedral dispute back in court By kurT BayEr Heritage campaigners are demanding to know why the owners of quake-crippled Christ Church Cathedral want it demolished, when they have no plans and no funds to start building a new one.

The ongoing legal saga surrounding the future of the damaged 132-year-old Christchurch landmark returned to court yesterday.

In 2012, the High Court ruled that the Anglican church was entitled to deconstruct the building, but only if a new one - and not necessarily a replica - was built on the same Cathedral Square site.

The Great Christchurch Buildings Trust (GCBT) challenged the decision in the Court of Appeal, which last year upheld

the High Court’s findings.

Last December, the Supreme Court dismissed a further appeal against the deconstruction.

A defended hearing went ahead before Justice Graham Panckhurst at the High Court in Christchurch yesterday, where Cathedral custodians, the Church Property Trustees (CPT) made an application to discharge a stay of demolition. The move would allow them to start deconstructing the cathedral.

The GCBT’s lawyer Francis Cooke QC questioned why the church wants to go ahead and demolish the building when it is not going to start rebuilding a new cathedral straight away.

Mr Cooke said the church “simply don’t have the funds”.

An enraged learner driver allegedly punched the test officer who failed him on his test at an Auckland testing centre on Monday. The officer was attacked by an applicant who had failed a practical driving test at the Meadowlands office about 3pm, New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) spokesman Andy Knackstedt said. The testing officer was completing paperwork following the test when the applicant entered the office and struck the testing officer, Mr Knackstedt said. The assault was reported to the police, who were given the registration number of the applicant’s vehicle.

Retailer considers Misdiagnosed legal ban challenge hip fracture fixed

Rakaia legal high retailer Garry Davies is considering legal action after the government’s sudden decision to temporarily ban synthetic cannabis sales.

The controversial owner of the R18 Adult Thingz store in Rakaia said hundreds of jobs will be lost because retailers could no longer afford to retain staff while the synthetic drugs are taken off the shelves and undergo safety testing.

Mr Davies said he was planning to meet with his lawyer on Monday to discuss if it was worth pursuing a legal case against the Ministry of Health which he believed acted unlawfully in making the “U-turn” decision.

They will discuss whether the ministry should pay retailers compensation for the loss of business when the estimated

18-month ban kicks in because it went back on its “promise” to allow the sale of legal highs while they were being tested.

Mr Davies said he had invested more than $100,000 in the business to work under the strict psychoactive substances laws set by the government, and it was upsetting to have it taken away without warning.

He is now planning to move the Adult Thingz shop into a premises next door which is a Filipino goods store. He said he would then sell “speed-like” products which he claims fall outside psychoactive substances and misuse of drugs laws.

However that could take some time, meaning “three, maybe four” of his staff are likely to be laid off.

“There’s 150-odd shops, all that have at least three staff members, that’s 500 jobs lost because the government told them

they were going to let them sell these products while they were being tested, so they all have a legitimate claim against the health department.

“They will say it’s temporary, but you tell that to staff who’ll be sitting around for a year and a half.”

Mr Davies said he would make a decision on pursuing legal action after Monday’s meeting, depending on the strength of the case.

The Ministry of Health said its role was to implement government policy, and it was not its decision.

When asked if it was fair for retailers that had invested thousands of dollars it said: “That’s a question for Parliament, which must balance the interests of the entire community. Any change will be as a result of a change to the law, made by Parliament.”

Enthralled in stitches for holidays

Thirteen girls learned the fine art of embroidery yesterday at a young embroiderers’ class run

by The Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild.

The girls were aged nine to 13 years and for most, it was their first time doing embroidery.

Class organiser Nola Sim, of the Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild, had three helpers to teach and guide the girls with stitches and techniques.

She said the girls’ goal was to create a placemat using two colours of felt material.

They were taught a number of different stitches and used those in their design, of which

they were varied and colourful.

Many of the girls were confident with colour schemes and chose to mix combinations not traditionally used.

Mrs Sim said it was nice to pass on skills to the younger generation and she planned to hold a similar class making a different product later in the year.

The woman at the centre of a complaint to Ashburton Hospital has pulled through emergency hip surgery with screws inserted, not a full hip replacement as first thought.

Nina Oakeshott, 77, had the emergency hip surgery on Wednesday.

The surgery came one month after she fell while visiting family in Rakaia.

At the time, a visit to Ashburton Hospital did not diagnose any fractures or breaks and she was sent home in agony.

A follow-up appointment three weeks later in Christchurch and another X-ray confirmed her hip was badly broken.

She underwent surgery in Christchurch the following day.

Daughter Jacky Oakeshott laid a complaint with the Canterbury District Health Board.

Her complaint was about the attitude of Ashburton Hospital staff on the day and the treatment her mother received.

Ms Oakeshott said yesterday a review of her mother’s X-rays saw the expected hip replacement downgraded but screws inserted.

Her mother had almost instant relief, she said.

She was discharged on Monday.

Ms Oakeshott had her complaint acknowledged by Ashburton Hospital, and expected more information to arrive by post.

It was likely to take up to 20 days for the complaint process to evolve.

CDHB Ashburton and Rural Health Services general manager Garth Bateup said any complaints to the hospital, or its services, were investigated.

“The DHB takes all complaints seriously and is committed to seeking a resolution for consumers or their families/whanau who have concerns, or are dissatisfied with our services.”

The complaints were managed by the Complaints Manager with input from the appropriate staff.

They were then reviewed by Mr Bateup.

“The Canterbury DHB encourages feedback as it helps us improve our systems.

“It is important to note that sometimes initial diagnostic testing does not always reveal the exact cause of a problem and it can sometimes take longer than we would like and require further investigation, such as more X-rays or tests.”

He said it was important patients who still felt unwell, with no improvement in the days after presenting to hospital, got further medical care from their doctor, or if it was an emergency call 111.

COMPLAINT PROCESS Complaints to the DHB can be made online at cdhb.health.nz or in verbal or written form.

The complaint will be acknowledged in writing within five working days of receipt.

The complaint is managed by the Complaints Manager at the hospital, or the service, attended.

The CDHB try to investigate a complaint within 20 working days from the date of acknowledgement.

Complainants are informed if this will take longer and the reasons it is necessary.

If a complaint is unable to be resolved to the complainant’s satisfaction they can request the CEO review the complaint or take their concerns to the Health and Disability Commissioner or Privacy Commissioner.

Maori wardens returning

Reintroducing Maori wardens to Mid Canterbury will further enhance the ability of police to communicate with the community, Senior Sergeant Mark Offen says.

The Hakatere Marae held a hui on Monday night to elect its seven-strong committee to lead the reinstatement of Maori wardens in Mid Canterbury after the last active programme faded 20 years ago.

Mr Offen said police often worked closely with Maori wardens and he would welcome “another group that can

be approached for assistance and be another set of eyes and ears” for the district.

“In the past, Maori wardens have had a presence in the commercial business districts of towns, and they are there for all people, but also try to have a non-confrontational relationship with Maori,” he said.

Maori wardens work closely with police, aiming to protect and support communities, including curbing unruly behaviour, security, street patrols, monitoring licensed premises, hospital visits and court attendance.

“They are another type of

communication, any form of communication with any group is to be encouraged because quite often the barrier to communication is misunderstanding, and with the support and training Maori wardens can assist in breaking down those barriers.”

The local Maori warden initiative will be chaired by Ray Solomon, with vice-chair Damian Peeti, secretary Judy Tuki, treasurer Michelle Brett, Brian Clark, Henare Kaa and Eleanor Hemi making up the rest of the committee.

Seven Ashburtonians are interested in being Maori war-

dens, but Mr Solomon would like to see up to 20 when the initiative begins later this year.

Safer Ashburton general manager Kevin Clifford said “there were a few gaps” when it came to services specific for the Ashburton Maori population, which had grown 33 per cent to 2196 in seven years.

He said Maori wardens could assist the Safer Ashburton town ambassadors, security and police who roamed the CBD during weekends to reduce alcohol harm.

“We are supportive of anything to helps to support our community,” Mr Clifford said.

Trust donations Two Ashburton community organisations have benefited from the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury’s latest round of donations. At its first meeting of the 2014-15 financial year the trust donated $51,517 towards projects being undertaken by community not-for–profit organisations within the region.

Successful with applications were the Ashburton Celtic Rugby Club which received $3000 towards the purchase of a grounds mower and Safer Ashburton which received $5000 towards the costs of renting its William Street premises.

Other beneficiaries included the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra which received $4000 towards their Mid and South Canterbury outreach programme in selected schools, and Ronald McDonald House Auckland which received a donation of $5,000 towards accommodation subsidies for Mid and South Canterbury families. Last year Mid and South Canterbury families spent 316 nights at Ronald McDonald House Auckland.

Escaped crusher The first boy racer car ordered to be destroyed under tough new laws escaped the crusher after a police blunder. Karn Clarrie Forrest, of Milton, became the first person in the country to have his car ordered confiscated and crushed under new boy racer legislation.

Police have confirmed the car - a 1982 Toyota Corolla DX - was not crushed due to a “deficiency in the police process. The court was unable to order that the vehicle be destroyed because Mr Forrest no longer owned it.”

Time running out to return rubbish survey

Time is running out for Ashburton residents and business owners to have their say in a survey of options for its rubbish and recycling collection service.

Ashburton District Council group manager service delivery Neil McCann said the deadline was Monday so people needed to get in quick and return their surveys via either

the council’s website, or via post. “The response to our survey has been great so far and we hope they will keep coming in over the next week,” Mr McCann said.

The survey form was delivered to all households in the district on 10 April.

The council is looking at three options for its rubbish and recycling collection service – remaining with the current bag and green bin system, keeping the green bin for glass

and replacing the black bag with a bin for rubbish and a bin for recycling or a third option where the green glass bin is retained and bins are provided for rubbish, recycling and for organic (kitchen and garden) waste.

Mr McCann said the survey was a valuable opportunity for people to let council know what their preferences were.

“The results of the survey will be a key part of the information council will consider, so

it is important for people to let council know what their overall preferences are,” Mr McCann said.

Once council has evaluated all available information (including the survey results), it will select a preferred option and will carry out a full consultation with the community, including seeking people’s ideas and comments on that option in June/July this year.

New Zealanders are buying more new cars and used imports, but we’re also keeping our old vehicles on the road for longer.

That resulted in an extra 57,000 cars on New Zealand roads last year, according to estimates by the Motor Trade Association (MTA).

If lined up nose to tail the extra cars would stretch 250km - or the distance from Wellington to Patea in Taranaki, MTA spokesman Ian Stronach said. The number of new and used cars entering the New Zealand fleet declined during the global financial crisis, but has rebounded since 2012. MTA figures show New Zealand’s total car fleet was 2,482,513 cars at the end of 2013, or 1.46 cars per household.

Crash victims named The two men killed in a crash near Te Hauke south of Hastings on Monday have been identified by police. Clarence Collier, 40, of Bridge Pa and Bruce Cardie, 52, of Flaxmere died when their vehicle plunged 600 metres off a dangerous rural road. The police Serious Crash Unit is continuing its investigation into the crash.

Police were alerted to the crash after a farm worker came across the wreckage on a farm property on Burma Rd, off SH2. The Hastings fire service rescue team also attended. Eastern District communications manager Kris McGehan said the car had rolled about 600m.

Child assault charges An Ashburton couple has been sentenced on multiple charges of child assault.

Their sad story emerged during a sentencing hearing before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court yesterday, where all identifying details were suppressed.

The court was told a second grandchild came into their care last year. This child exhibited extremely challenging behaviour – the details of which were also suppressed. They sought help from agencies, however little was offered.

Second appearance Jason Ross Ford made his second court appearance for theft in two days.

The 28-year-old casual labourer was sentenced on Monday for stealing medicinal drugs; yesterday he was back to face a charge of petrol theft.

The court was told Ford filled his parents’ car, before driving off from an Ashburton service station owing $70 on March 4.

In explanation he told police he “didn’t have any money”.

Defending himself yesterday, Ford said he had made a stupid mistake.

“It’s not a mistake – there was no mistake about it,” Judge Maze replied.

Ford had made no attempt to make good the debt but was ordered to do so within the next two weeks.

He was convicted and sentenced to 40 hours of community work, to run concurrently with the sentence he received on Monday.

The assaults related to incidents of slapping, twisting the child’s ears, and hitting the child with a belt and with rolled up newspapers.

Lawyer Michelle Barrell said both defendants were extremely remorseful and wished they could turn back the clock. They hoped they could offer support to the child in the future.

Judge Maze acknowledged the couple was faced with an extremely difficult situation, however she said the child was entitled to care and protection.

“These defendants stepped in

as de facto parents for their two grandchildren – it is extremely challenging even without challenging behaviour,” she said.

“Both defendants are extremely remorseful and puzzled and disturbed by their actions.

“They are keen to get help – help which they may have at times sought and not received.

“There is no doubt this is a sad case and no doubt they have much to contribute to the victim if they get support.

“But at the other end, the victim was only eight years old and one of the more vulnerable

members of society.”

Judge Maze suggested each defendant pay reparations of $500 each into a trust to be set up for the child, and was told the couple had already opened bank accounts for both children and continued to make deposits.

It was agreed the amount in the victim’s account could be transferred into the trust account.

The couple will undertake a nine month supervision sentence, to include parenting courses, under the direction of probation services.

■ ASHBURTON FIRE CALL

Assault charge Lancer Michael James, 27, of Ashburton, admitted assaulting a woman and charge of burglary. He was convicted and sentenced to 150 hours of community work, and six months supervision – to include alcohol and drug assessments, counselling and treatment as directed.

Found in enclosed yard Wati James Te Reho, of Netherby was convicted of being found in an enclosed yard unlawfully, and threatening language – he was sentenced to 40 hours of community work.

Assault charge Riki Te Hiri Waaka, of Ashburton, was convicted on a charge of assault and ordered to make an emotional harm payment of $500 at $30 a week, and convicted and discharged on a charge of breaching a protection order.

Benefit fraud An Ashburton mother of six will spend four months on community detention for benefit fraud. Lani Peia Hallett, 44, admitted five charges of obtaining a benefit by deception and one of dishonest use of a document. As a result she was overpaid about $28,000 between May 2011 and December 2012. Her lawyer, Michelle Barrell said Hallett had three foster children in her care, and assumed as Child, Youth and Family were aware her partner was living with her, other government agencies would also have been informed.

Wilful damage

An overheating light fixture prompted a call-out to a central Ashburton shop for the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade yesterday morning. Ashburton fire chief Alan Burgess said the light was a fluorescent one in a display cabinet at The China Shop and when those lights malfunctioned, they gave off a “very distinctive odour and a bit of smoke”. No serious damage was done.

Cannabis grown in commercial quantities A man found to be cultivating cannabis in commercial quantities in his Ashburton home has been sentenced to six months’ home detention.

Peter Alan Cavanagh, 44, admitted to having been a heavy cannabis user for more than 20 years, during yesterday’s appearance in the Ashburton District Court before Judge Joanna Maze.

Police uncovered five mature plants, ready for harvest, and 10 plants about a month off harvest in two separate areas set up to cultivate under lights in Cavanagh’s garage. They also found a mature plant drying and 83 grams of dried cannabis in plastic containers.

Her lawyer Marilyn Gilchrist told the court McLean had been in a violent relationship for 18 months before she was assaulted during a domestic altercation in January. She left

The licence was subsequently destroyed. McLean has since obtained a protection order against the complainant.

Judge Maze ordered her to make reparations of $128 and ordered her to come before the court if called in nine months.

Cash-strapped, Stacey Leigh Curtis, 24, stole $500 from the Ashburton RSA. She was charged with theft, and subsequently appeared in court yesterday.

She was convicted and remanded at large for sentencing on July 21 to allow for a restorative justice conference to take place.

Intoxicated on the evening of April 6, Daniel Mark Fogarty, of Methven, attempted to get into the Christchurch motel he was staying at. When the other occupants declined to let him in he became abusive and broke a window – resulting in a wilful damage charge and a court appearance yesterday.

The court was told an embarrassed Fogarty paid for the damage the following morning. He was convicted, fined $200 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Discharge a possibility Sami Taufui Ae Palari appeared for sentencing on an assault charge.

The matter was originally referred for a restorative justice conference, however Palari was unable to be contacted. In the meantime he had made an informal apology to the complainant. He was remanded at large with instructions to make a $250 donation to the Salvation Army by June 10, for the opportunity of a discharge without conviction.

Work sentence breach Tepa Richard Walker, 26, of Hampstead was convicted and discharged on a charge of breaching his community work sentence – and warned to get the remaining 30 outstanding hours done.

Arrest warrant A warrant was issued for the arrest of Miles Prescott Warner.

Riding in memory of his wife

When Gavin Borthwick hops on his 50cc scooter and heads to the West Coast next month, he’ll be carrying his wife Anna close to his heart.

For Gavin, the fundraising scooter run is a very personal crusade. In 2010 he rode in the event, to raise money for the Cancer Society after both of Anna’s parents had died from cancer.

This year he’s riding in memory of his wife who died from cancer in October.

It’s been a long and tough few years for Gavin and the couple’s daughter Jenna. They had to deal with Anna’s disabling fall from a horse and then fight alongside her in her final battle against cancer.

Without the help of the Cancer Society, Anna’s final months would have been even tougher for her family, Gavin said.

“They gave us such a lot of support during Anna’s treatment and this is one way I can repay them. As far as their sup-

port goes, you don’t think about the practical side of things when you’re affected but they know all the things you need to help you cope.”

That support comes in many ways such as petrol vouchers, emotional support and in Anna’s case, with organising a wig.

“If we needed something, they were there.”

The scooter ride is also part of Gavin’s healing and learning to live without Anna.

“It’s a bit of fun and it’s a way to make money. The Cancer Society supports so many people so that’s why people are so generous,” he said.

The ride is capped at 250 scooters and each rider has their own fundraising web page. The event is unashamedly about raising money.

“Once we’re on the road, it’s a bit like a scooter road block. You have to ride a scooter so it becomes a challenge,” Gavin said.

His challenge has already started. Last time he bought an old, cheap scooter and struggled with the ride. This time

he’s invested a bit more, but his scooter doesn’t go – yet.

“It’d been in storage for years so I’ve got a fair bit of work to do on it, but it looks very tidy,” he said. Last ride there was snow in Porters Pass and sev-

eral scooters struggled to make the grade. This time he’s hoping for fine weather, knowing the ride will be long. Small tanks mean frequent fuel stops and the Sheffield pie shop is always a must stop, he said.

Riders all dress to a theme, but Gavin and his mates have still to decide on outfits. Last time they rode as Santas.

Issues ‘need to be resolved’ - PM Prime Minister John Key says Christchurch’s flooding issues need to be resolved, and it’s up to the council to come up with a plan.

Residents in Flockton Basin are demanding action after their homes were flooded this week for the fourth time in just over a month.

Speaking in Christchurch yesterday, Mr Key said the council as lead agency was meant to provide a proposal to the Government on the next steps, but hadn’t done so yet.

“It’s too long, and the real point here is that we can’t act until either the council makes us the lead agency or they provide

Final round of quake grants The final round of grants from the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust, set up in the dark days following the deadly February 2011 quake, were announced yesterday.

Grants worth $8 million have been shared between 20 new local recovery projects: from quake-damaged libraries, a school pool and scholarship scheme, to sports, music and art organisations. Since its inception just days after 185 people died in the devastating February 22 quake, almost $99m of donations has been received or pledged. In the three years since the quake, the trust has helped more than 300 community projects in Christchurch and Canterbury.

Family to retrieve body The family of the Malaysian student who died during a commercial diving course in Waikato will come to New Zealand to retrieve his body, the head of the diving school says. The 23-year-old student died during a New Zealand School of Commercial Diver Training assessment in Lake Puketirini, near Huntly on Monday afternoon. The incident is being investigated by WorkSafe NZ. Police said they were called just after 2pm at Weavers Crossing Rd. “The matter is currently under investigation by WorkSafe NZ and has been reported to the coroner,” Sergeant John McCarthy said. The Intueri Education Group, which runs the New Zealand School of Commercial Diver Training, said it had commissioned “a thorough” internal investigation.

Bailed on manslaughter A man who allegedly caused the death of Judd Hall by driving drunk while fleeing from police in Greymouth on January 24, made a brief appearance in front of the Greymouth District Court registrar on Monday. Jordan Nathaniel McGrath, 28, of Whataroa, was bailed until May 13, when he will plead by video link with the High Court to the charges, including the manslaughter of Mr Hall, 26.

McGrath is charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Mr Hall, dangerous driving causing injury to a second passenger, Kori Jeffcoat; driving with excess breath or blood-alcohol on a third or subsequent occasion; and committing manslaughter by driving at a dangerous speed while under the influence. The car that McGrath was driving crashed into a High Street house at high speed about 11.30pm on January 24. Mr Hall died at the scene.

T

he Labour Party may have finally found itself a new policy that is worth wider

debate.

Finance Minister Bill English was yesterday busy picking holes in the idea of using KiwiSaver levels to control inflation, but the responses from several corners was more positive and engaged than any previous Labour policy announcement.

Labour desperately needs a shot in the arm to get its campaign back on track after the shock departure of Shane Jones and a series of forgettable policies that have failed to capture the public or the media.

Leader David Cunliffe has some clever, media-savvy people on his staff, but they have let themselves down in recent times by not getting any traction on recent announcements.

Some of the recent policies have lacked the genuine popular appeal, but the timing of several announcements instantly condemns them to the last pages of the newspaper.

The launch of the transport policy two weeks ago was not exactly riveting, but the fact that Labour chose the same day that Kate and Will dominated the nation during their first walkabout in Christchurch, ensured that the announcement would get minimal airplay or newspaper coverage.

Two days later, the Labour media experts scored another own goal when they launched their pro-Kiwi manufacturing policy, one day before Good Friday.

Because most newspapers in New Zealand do not publish on Good Friday the announcement went virtually unnoticed.

By the time the voters returned from their holiday break, this potentially popular policy had become old news.

So far Labour is not doing itself any favours and you have to wonder how they can dent John Key’s popularity.

The latest interest policy however, has real merit and people will take notice when you offer them more savings instead of higher mortgage payments.

The devil is always in the detail and the biggest question is how Labour can convince low-income families who cannot afford a home and live hand to mouth, that they need a compulsory KiwiSaver scheme.

Council works on sustainability Andrew Dalziel

S

ustainability is about reducing our impact on the environment and trying to ensure natural resources last into the future.

There are quite a number of things local councils can do to influence sustainability. From supporting efficient transport options such as walking and cycling, through to subsidising residents’ installation of rain water tanks or bokashi composting systems.

The list of possible sustainability initiatives is long and the practice of councils throughout the country is varied.

While much of a council’s related policy or regulatory work will be focused on

promoting sustainability in the wider community, it’s always a good idea to have your own house in order before you get too far down the track telling others what to do.

A stocktake of what Ashburton District Council is doing right now under the umbrella of sustainability shows we have a wide spread of initiatives in place.

To help reduce the amount of paper the council uses we are making significant changes to enable more online transactions. The online building consents system now on our website is our latest addition that is proving popular with customers.

Council building officials and information systems officers are trialling tablet devices

(small hand-held computers), which will cut down on both the amount of paperwork and travel to and from the office that the building team have to do.

The mayor and councillors have been given tablets to lessen the need for printed agendas and reports. All the new computers (PCs) and monitors we purchase are low power users. The old technology is recycled where possible.

We are also looking at ‘green keeper’ software which “powers down” PCs when they are not being used.

Staff require swipe cards to use copiers and printers, with printing use monitored to reduce wastage. Printer toner cartridges are sent off for recycling; paper and any cans or glass in the office is all recycled.

The council’s fleet of vehicles is relatively modern. Fuel efficiency and emission levels are taken into consideration as

part of any new vehicle purchase decision. Staff pool vehicles to ensure effective use of them and we plan as far as possible for staff site visits to minimise travel costs and fuel use.

Low power LED street lighting has now started to be used. It is being installed as part of the Mt Somers’ lighting upgrade.

Leak detection and repair programmes operate continuously to reduce water usage and energy consumption through pumping.

The residential recycling programme the council operates results in a high quality of material being collected.

With a very low contamination rate little of what is recycled needs to be diverted to landfill. The Ashburton Resource Recovery Park is also turning green waste into compost available for sale.

Our parks and recreation staff chip and mulch material for reuse.

Council’s subdivision on Geoff Geering Drive requires homes to include sustainable features such as the use of solar power, on-site roof water catchment and permeable paving strips that reduce stormwater run-off.

Heat pumps have been installed in our elderly housing units.

As you would expect, the new Ashburton Art Gallery and Heritage Centre is being built to current building standards incorporating energy-saving devices. There is extensive use of LED lighting and the lights will automatically dim in viewing areas if no-one is present.

The new EA Networks Sport Centre will also incorporate modern energy-saving devices. LED lights will be in all non-specialised areas. Roof water will be used to flush pool filters. The heating plant will recover heat from the internal atmosphere in the pool area.

These are just some of the things the council is doing that fit within a sustainability programme.

On a case-by-case basis we can expect to integrate new initiatives into the programme in future.

Russia ‘won’t invade’

BY MAX DELANY Moscow has assured Washington it will not invade Ukraine, the US Defence Department says after the United States and Europe imposed fresh sanctions on Russia over its role in the former Soviet republic.

As Western powers stepped up the pressure on Moscow over the worst East-West crisis since the Cold War, the White House yesterday slapped sanctions on seven Russian officials and 17 firms close to President Vladimir Putin.

The European Union said it was adding 15 names to its own list while Canada added nine names and two banks.

Tensions on the ground in Ukraine spiked when a proMoscow mayor was shot and badly wounded and rebels seized another town.

The Pentagon said that Secretary of Defence Chuck Hagel had spoken by phone with his

Russian counterpart Sergei Shoigu and that “Shoigu reiterated his assurance that Russian forces would not invade Ukraine”.

Defence Department spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby, in a statement, said Hagel urged an end to Russia’s “destabilising influence inside Ukraine and warned that continued aggression would further isolate Russia and result in more diplomatic and economic pressure”.

The Pentagon chief also asked for Moscow’s help in securing the release of seven inspectors from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe being held in eastern Ukraine.

Negotiations were still under way to secure the release of the observers, whose capture by rebels on Friday sparked global outrage.

Moscow said that in yesterday’s phone call Shoigu called on the US to tone down its

rhetoric on the Ukraine crisis.

The Kremlin vowed there would be a “painful” response for Washington to the sanctions imposed.

Washington warned it would target specific sectors of the Russian economy if the tens of thousands of troops the Kremlin has ordered to the border invade Ukraine.

Shoigu assured Hagel that Russian troops had returned to their barracks.

“Russia was forced to launch large-scale exercises near the border with Ukraine, facing the prospect of (Ukrainian) military action against civilians,” Shoigu said. “Once the Ukrainian authorities declared that they would not use regular military units against the unarmed population, the Russian troops returned to barracks.”

Among those targeted by the new sanctions are close Putin ally Igor Sechin, president and chairman of the board at Rosneft, one of the world’s largest publicly traded oil companies.

Washington is also tightening licensing requirements for certain high-tech exports to Russia that could have a military use. The Western sanctions are a response to Russia’s perceived failure to implement an April 17 deal struck in Geneva to defuse the crisis. - AFP

Misdemeanour summons for Paul Simon Paul Simon and his wife, Edie Brickell, were arrested on disorderly conduct charges by officers investigating a family dispute, but the couple held hands in court yesterday and said they did not feel threatened by the other.

Simon told a Norwalk Superior Court judge that he had a rare argument with his wife on Saturday night at their home in New Canaan.

Simon burst onto the national stage with his former partner Art Garfunkel in the 1960s, adding a gentle voice to the growing chorus of opposition to the Vietnam War. Brickell, meanwhile, gained fame for her songs that blend rock, folk, blues and jazz.

A caller from the singers’ home dialled emergency services and hung up, police chief Leon Krolikowski said.

Officers who responded Paul believed it was a case of Simon domestic violence, he said. Simon and Brickell were each given a misdemeanor summons and one of them agreed to leave and go to another location.

“They’re both victims and they have children involved and we’re trying to be very cautious of that.”

President says ‘sorry’ South Korean President Park Geun-Hye has apologised for her government’s failure to combat systemic and regulatory “evils” blamed for the loss of about 300 lives in a ferry disaster. Two days after her prime minister resigned over the tragedy, Park’s comments are another attempt to defuse growing public anger about the sinking of the 6825-tonne Sewol.

“I don’t know how to apologise for the failure to prevent this accident, and for the insufficient first response,” Park said. “I am sorry to the people and heavyhearted that many precious lives were lost.” Park’s government has been widely criticised over perceived corruption and lax safety standards that may have led to the disaster.

New killer tornadoes Fresh storms have torn across the southeastern United States, killing at least two people in Alabama and threatening millions of people only a day after tornadoes killed 17 and ripped up homes in nearby states. Several tornadoes cut across northern Alabama yesterday, killing at least two people in the town of Athens, NBC News reported. A tornado also swept through the city of Tupelo, the National Weather Service said, adding that a crew was en route to survey damage. Parts of Alabama were also at high risk.

NZ tourist shot A New Zealand tourist has been shot dead as robbers tried to steal his bag in Argentina, officials have confirmed. It was reported

by Argentinian news outlets the victim was an Australian, aged in his 30s, who had been attacked while walking through General San Martin Park in the city of Mendoza on Monday (local time). However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Wellington confirmed on Tuesday the victim was a New Zealander. The man was named in Argentinian media as 31-year-old Nicholas Heyward.

Obama warns China US President Barack Obama has ended an Asian tour with a warning to China against using force to resolve territorial disputes, and an “ironclad” promise of military support for the Philippines.

Obama used an address to US and Filipino troops in Manila yesterday to again voice concern over the increasingly tense maritime rows between China and US allies in the region, an issue that has dominated his four-nation trip.

“We believe that nations and peoples have the right to live in security and peace, to have their sovereignty and territorial integrity respected,” Obama said.

Air search called off The air search for the missing Malaysia Airlines jet in the southern Indian Ocean has been called off, with any wreckage likely to have sunk. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott has declared a new, underwater phase will begin in the baffling and frustrating search for MH370. Australia is heading the hunt for the Boeing 777, which disappeared on March 8 carrying 239 people.

Michael Littlewood, co-director at Auckland University’s retirement policy and research centre, said the policy was based on the underlying assumption that New Zealanders needed to be forced to save for retirement.

“The policy rests on compulsion and that is flawed - there is no evidence New Zealanders are under-saving for retirement.”

He said using KiwiSaver to fight inflation was a “sticking plaster kind of solution”.

But Labour’s proposals was given support by KiwiSaver industry body the Financial Services Council. Chief executive Peter Neilson said New Zealand did need more macro-economic tools to control inflation and being able to adjust KiwiSaver could also result in contribution rates going down if the economy was tanking.

The company made a net profit of $563,000, or 5.51 cents per share, in the six months ended February 28, compared to a loss of $531,000, or 5.2 cents, a year earlier, it said in a statement yesterday. Revenue from continuing operations slipped 2.1 per cent to $19.4 million.

Battle of the chocolatiers Whittaker’s has come out on top in the latest stoush between New Zealand’s chocolate kings.

A decision from the High Court in Wellington has found in favour of the confectionery company, dismissing a bid by its rival Cadbury to stop it from registering the trademark “Berry Forest”.

Cadbury had appealed against a decision from the Assistant Commissioner of Trade Marks - which gave the go-ahead to Whittaker’s to use the Berry Forest name - in the High Court last month.

Lawyer Rosemary Wallis argued at the time people were likely to associate the Berry Forest name with Cadbury and its Black Forest mark.

This meant consumers were likely to be confused or deceived, amounting to a breach of the Fair Trading Act. However Justice Rachel Dun-

Labour’s proposals to allow the Reserve Bank to adjust KiwiSaver contributions rather than interest rates to control inflation could hurt savers and see debt repayment delayed until retirement, KiwiSaver experts warn.

The Labour party has announced proposals to change New Zealand’s monetary policy tools by introducing a variable savings rate for KiwiSaver.

The policy would require the Reserve Bank to use changes to the rate of people’s KiwiSaver contributions rather than interest rates to control inflation while taking pressure off the over-valued kiwi dollar.

Labour would also make KiwiSaver compulsory and increase contributions from the current six per cent combined employee and employer con-

tribution to nine per cent over time.

Labour finance spokesman David Parker said the proposal would mean that instead of people paying more interest on their mortgage, a similar amount of extra savings would go into KiwiSaver.

But Chris Douglas, co-head of Australasian research at Morningstar, said the policy had the potential to penalise savers.

“Obviously low interest rates are great for borrowers but it does penalise savers.”

Douglas said it would help people who wanted to borrow a lot to buy a house.

“But what happens when they reach 65? Will they just have a huge mortgage which they will have to pay off using their savings?”

One bean recipe to use in many ways

T

his month’s New Zealand Healthy Food provides some bright ideas for using the humble kidney bean.

Beans have a stack of advantages as a meal staple – they’re cheap, provide lots of fibre and protein and they’re versatile.

You can make up a basic mix and eat it just with rice or you can use that mix as the base for other meals.

■ Sprinkle with parley and serve

Tomato capsicum and kidney bean braise 1t olive oil 1 onion, finely diced 4 cloves garlic sliced 2 medium red peppers diced 1 long red chilli finely sliced 1T ground cumin 1t ground coriander 2t paprika 2 x 400g tins chopped tomatoes 400g tin kidney beans, drained and rinsed ■ Heat oil in lge heavy based pan ■ Add onion and cook stirring for 5 mins until browned ■ Add garlic, peppers, chilli and spices ■ Cook, stirring for 2 mins ■ Add tomatoes and cook 15 mins ■ Add kidney beans and remove from heat.

■ Serve with rice and a dollop of sour cream Baked eggs 1 1/2C of kidney bean braise 4 eggs 1/2C grated, reduced fat tasty cheese Chopped fresh coriander to serve 8 slices sourdough bread.

200g vermicelli noodles 1 carrot, thinly sliced 2 spring onions, thinly sliced 1 red capsicum, thinly sliced ½ C loosely packed fresh mint leaves ½ C coarsely chopped fresh coriander 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 small fresh red chilli, seeded, finely chopped (optional) 400g cooked chicken, skin removed, shredded Dressing: ½ C sweet chilli sauce

2-3T lime juice 1T fish sauce (optional)

■ Place noodles in a large heatproof bowl and cover with boiling water.

Let stand until just tender and then drain.

■ Combine noodles in a large bowl with carrot, onions, capsicum, mint, coriander, garlic and chilli.

■ Add chicken.

■ Combine dressing ingredients and mix in a screw top jar.

■ Pour over noodles and toss gently to combine.

A. This is a legally binding agreement between the resident and Terrace View. The ORA sets out the terms and conditions of your right to live in the village.

Terrace Retirement Village The Statutory Supervisor will also report annually to you at a village meeting. At Terrace View we will be using Perpetual.

Q. If we see a unit or villa that appeals to us. Can we reserve that unit until we consult with our solicitor and our family?

A. At Terrace View you can do this.

You may lodge an "Expression of Interest" to hold a unit or villa. To do this there will be a refundable deposit. This deposit is held in trust with the Statutory Supervisor and, if you change your mind it will be refunded within a specified period. Should you wish to do this the village Manager. Karen Harris. Will meet with you to complete the required documentation.

Q. What will I do with my car if I come into the village?

A. The villas all have a garage attached with internal access. There are garages for some of the apartments but these will be limited. Parking spaces however will be available close to the complex.

Q. May we come and go as we please and leave our unit or villa unattended if we are away on holiday?

A. Village life brings with it security and freedom if you wish to travel.

You can go away knowing that your home and garden will be watched and cared for while you are away.

albraith funeral Services was formed in Temuka in 1905 and was operated by the Galbraith family until the mid 90’s when it was sold to the McKinnon family. Donald Galbraith continued managing the Company until his retirement in 2003.

Galbraith’s have over the years arranged and conducted funerals throughout Canterbury. However in June 2013 a decision was made to open in Ashburton to give Mid Cantabrians another option in choice of funeral service when confronted with the loss of a loved one.

Currently there is an office, family room, viewing room, bathrooms, Lounge, and hearse garage. Further development is planned in the near future The building at 246 Havelock street was secured mid July and work started on a refurbishment internally. It was intended that the premises would be open to support the community by December 2013 however a decision was made to delay the opening until after Christmas and the premises officially opened mid February this year.

Currently there is an office, family room, viewing room, bathrooms, Lounge, and hearse garage. Further development is planned in the near future.

The facilities are open five days a week and available by appointment weeknights and weekends.

Galbraith’s provide support with both woman and men funeral Directors. The team is headed by Eion McKinnon and he is supported by Lois, Rob, Matthew, Jo, and Susan. The Company is a member of the Funeral Directors Association of NZ (FDANZ) and has established Prearrangement and Prepaid options available. Vibrant, colourful show takes the stage

Colour and enchantment will feature at Vjekoslav Nemesh’s Mother Of All Illusions exhibition to open at Terrace Downs tomorrow night.

Born in Yugoslavia and now living in New Zealand, Mr Nemesh has been a professional artist since 1984.

He has participated in more than 150 group exhibitions and 30 solo exhibitions and his work is in collections throughout the world.

Terrace Downs arts director, Rachael Inch, said she was excited to have such a high profile artist visiting and exhibiting at the resort.

“Nemesh’s works are described as coming from a place of energies, vibrations and emotions,” Ms Inch said.

“Through meticulous practice he opens himself to frequencies around and transforms them on canvas.

“His work is non-conceptual, often difficult to put in a category, but as you stand before it you just know that it feels right, you find yourself mesmerised,” she said.

Mr Nemesh manifested exceptional drawing skills in early childhood and was particularly interested in comics.

After a few years of painting he won several awards which encouraged him to pursue an artistic career.

In the early 1990s, after sudden reform in the former Yugoslavia, a number of private art galleries were opened which gave him a start in his career.

This was shortlived as civil war broke out, although he still had great success with his art.

He moved to New Zealand in 1994 and during his early years here he began computer classes, focusing on graphics and publishing.

The opening night will begin at 6.30pm, offering an opportunity to dine with Mr Nemesh.

Mother Of All Illusions will run to June 26 during resort opening hours.

The artist will also be holding a painting workshop in Christchurch on May 4 and 5, and those interested are urged to contact Ms Inch on 021 1229317.

Slater well motivated Billy Slater says the threat of losing his place as Australia’s No.1 fullback does provide him with some extra motivation to perform in Friday’s Test against New Zealand. Hurricanes gain momentum

BY PATRICK MCKENDRY Hurricanes’ supporters rejoice, for the moment, at least.

Not only is your team leading the New Zealand conference in the second half of the season, the statistics back up what you are probably thinking - that your team is the most entertaining of the competition.

Whether they remain there until the end is quite clearly another matter.

With the weather becoming much more winter-like (at least in New Zealand) and the Hurricanes playing New Zealand teams in their final five matches - including the Chiefs twice they face big challenges in order to maintain their superiority.

Their ability to beat defenders is their biggest asset.

They have four players in the New Zealand Herald’s Stats Centre top 15 in this category, including Alapati Leiua, who is proving a revelation after moving from the wing to secondfive, and in-form wing Julian Savea.

Beauden Barrett and Andre Taylor are seventh and 15th respectively; the latter finding some of the form he showed so memorably two years ago.

Can Mark Hammett’s men rely on that helter skelter game plan when it is hosing down in Wellington or Auckland or Hamilton? Do they have the ability to change to suit the conditions?

Their mauling has improved, we saw that when they nullified the Bulls, but doubts remain

about whether they can dominate a game through mistakefree, set-piece dominated rugby.

They will also face what should be a very angry Waratahs team in Sydney on Saturday after Michael Cheika’s team bumbled their way to defeat against the Blues at Eden Park.

The Waratahs’ backs hardly fired a shot last weekend, but Cheika will have fired a few during the week, and Kurtley Beale and Israel Folau, standouts in terms of carrying and offloading, respectively, are two individuals who could capitalise on the Hurricanes’ open game.

Saturday’s match in Christchurch between the Crusaders and Brumbies, two of the form teams of the competition, will be revealing.

Both have the players and the game plan suited to wet conditions and play-offs rugby - and that is a territory-based, setpiece-oriented grind. The appearance of Richie McCaw, possibly from the reserves bench, will help the home team.

The Highlanders impressed hugely with their victory over the Sharks in Durban, and, while Malakai Fekitoa presents a much needed extra attacking option for them, they appear to be operating at close to their full potential.

have few standout players in terms of statistics. Their best is Aaron Cruden, currently out with a broken thumb, who is the fifth-equal best offloader with 13.

However, during their titlewinning runs of the past two years they have always been considered better than the sum of their parts.

They have a relatively good draw leading into the play-offs and once there, and with Cruden fit again, they will present a massive challenge to any opposition.

The Blues’ run-in is challenging and besides which it’s hard to see how they will turn around their woeful away record.

Their final three matches are against the Force (away), Crusaders (away) and Chiefs (home). Charles Piutau, who has

played every minute of every match, is easily their best attacking threat.

Johnson said doubters only needed to look at Peta Hiku’s four tries for Manly on Sunday as a reason why bigger names like Shaun Kenny-Dowall weren’t selected.

“There’s a few players in our side who have been playing really well and that’s probably why you haven’t seen some of the bigger names because these players are in their spot,” he said. “Form is all they can pick the team on. Obviously there’s always going to be players disappointed with missing out on camp.

“You always want to be in this hotel at this time of the year, in amongst this group of players so we’ve just got to do those boys who missed out justice by putting in a performance that warrants winning and does our country proud.”

The draft Annual plan is now available for feedback from the community, and Council wants to know what you think.

Come along to a community meeting to hear about what Council is proposing to do in the coming year.

Community meetings will be held in Hakatere, rakaia and Mayfield this week.

An Open Fire season remains in place across the Ashburton Plains and a Restricted Fire Season remains in place for all lands administered by the Department of Conservation that are State areas, and to the fire safety margins of any such State areas.

Under Environment Canterbury’s Natural Resources Regional Plan rules, no outdoor burning is allowed at any time within all urban areas of the district without a resource consent from Environment Canterbury.

Restrictions may be reimposed at a later date if conditions warrant, and it is the responsibility of all persons lighting fires to determine the current fire season status before lighting any such fires.

There is still an expectation that any outdoor burning is conducted in a safe manner.

Top tips on the netball court For Mid Canterbury’s up-and-coming netballers, where exactly they best fit on the court is not always so clear-cut at a young age.

However, three coaches from Mid Canterbury Netball were determined to help 35 youngsters, including 12-year-old Tori Kelland, aged eight to 13 find their groove at the organisation’s annual holiday programme at Ashburton College yesterday.

Coaches Shelley Donnelly (defence), Angela Leadley (mid-court) and former Silver Fern Angela Mitchell (shooting) ran the programme for any local youngsters keen on netball, seeing them teach all three on-court disciplines in what is the only netball holiday programme of the year.
