Dead teen was lying on road BY MYLES HUME
MYLES.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Mid Canterbury teen Danny Hendriks was lying on the road when a car fatally struck him late Saturday night, police say. However, the events leading up to the 18-year-old’s tragic death remain a mystery as authorities try to piece together what happened that night. Mr Hendriks, an automotive technician in Ashburton, was killed at 10.55pm Saturday when a car carrying three people hit him on Acton Road, east of Rakaia. He was probably on his way to his girlfriend’s place further up the road. Senior Constable Mike Jackson, of Rakaia, said initial inquiries indicated Mr Hendriks had been lying on the road carriageway at the time of the crash. Acton Road is an unlit rural stretch, and Mr Hendriks was wearing dark clothing. He was about 700 metres east of the township and in a 100km/h zone. Mr Jackson said police are still working to establish Mr Hendriks’ movements in the hours leading up to the crash. “We understand that he had been with
a group attending a function in Christchurch earlier in the day and returned to the Rakaia area during the evening. “It’s believed Mr Hendriks was heading to an address on the outskirts of the town, but at this stage we do not know the details of his movements on Saturday night.” Police are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen a man walking in the area of Bridge Street/ SH1 in Rakaia, and Elizabeth Avenue or Michael Street to the east of the town. Police have interviewed the driver and two passengers of the vehicle involved in the crash. No decision has been made on whether any charges will be laid in relation to the crash, and results from a blood alcohol test could be more than a week away. Anyone with information is asked to contact Rakaia police on 302-7009 or Christchurch police on (03) 363-7400.
