Death sees toll climb BY ERIN TASKER
ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A woman injured in a car crash on Ashburton’s Smallbone Drive on Good Friday has died in Christchurch Hospital. Her death - a week after the crash - takes the number of people who have died following car crashes in Mid Canterbury so far this year to four – one more than for all of 2013 and a number that police are calling disappointing. The woman’s name is yet to be released but she was in a car carrying four indoor bowlers from Marlborough, which was hit by a red Holden driven by a man – the sole occupant of that vehicle. Police believe the driver of the Holden lost control as he entered the Riverside Industrial Park and collided with the bowlers’ car. The Holden’s driver and three bowlers were taken to Ashburton Hospital with minor to moderate injuries, while the woman who died - a passenger in the bowlers’ vehicle - was flown to Christchurch Hospital via the Westpac Rescue Helicopter with injuries including a suspected broken leg.
The bowlers had been taking part in a South Island chartered club’s indoor bowls tournament and were travelling from the McNally Street Indoor Bowls Stadium to the Ashburton Club and MSA when the crash occurred. Ashburton Police Senior Sergeant Mark Offen said investigations were continuing into the cause of the crash and it was yet to be determined whether charges would be laid. He urged any witnesses who may have seen either of the cars before the crash to come forward. Officially Mid Canterbury’s road toll for 2014 is three so far – the woman from the Good Friday crash and two pedestrians hit by cars and killed on rural Mid Canterbury roads in the past month. The death of Barry Whitcombe in a crash off the Mt Hutt Access Road in March is not officially part of the road toll because it happened on a closed road. Mr Offen said all crashes showed how fragile life could be. “People just have to drive to the conditions and ensure that little bit of white paint that separates the vehicles, separates the vehicles,” Mr Offen said.
