Nigella not as welcome in NZ as ‘Wolf’

Nigella Lawson needs special permission to visit New Zealand, but the “Wolf of Wall Street” will be eligible for a visa when he comes next month, despite having been jailed for fraud. Last week it was revealed that British television cook Lawson had to get a special dispensation to visit New Zealand next month because she had been refused entry to the United States after publicly admitting using cocaine and marijuana.

She will be ineligible for a visa to New Zealand for the rest of her life, despite having no convictions. However, no such dispensation is needed for Jordan Belfort on his visit to speak at investment seminars. A spokesman said Mr Belfort was yet to apply for a visa, but he was eligible because his sentence was less than five years and the conviction was more than 10 years ago. Only those sentenced to more than five years are ineligible for a visa for life.

Jodie Foster marries girlfriend Hollywood veteran and Silence of the Lambs star Jodie Foster has married her girlfriend Alexandra Hedison, a spokeswoman for the actress says. Foster, who made a speech at last year’s Golden Globes widely seen as her official coming-out, tied the knot with photographer Hedison at the weekend, according to People magazine.

The couple had been dating for almost a year, it said. The 51-year-old star’s publicist, Jennifer Allen, confirmed the details yesterday, but gave no further immediate comment. At the January 2013 Golden Globes, Foster hailed her female ex-partner as “one of the deepest loves of my life” – while denying it was a coming-out speech, saying she had done that “back in the Stone Age”.

Bieber’s Japan faux pas Troubled pop star Justin Bieber has apologised for having his picture taken at a controversial shrine in Japan. The Canadian singer paid a visit to Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine, which honours Japan’s war dead, including former military leaders who committed mass atrocities across Asia and the Pacific during World War Two. The shrine is seen across Asia as a symbol of Japan’s perceived lack of penitence for its imperialist past, but the 20-year-old posted a picture on his Instagram account this week showing him visiting the shrine, which prompted a backlash from some fans who lambasted him for his historical ignorance.

Azalea forced to stop crowd surfing Australian rapper Iggy Azalea has been forced to stop crowd surfing at her concerts after fans tried to grope her. Azalea told New York radio station Hot 97 that security has been upgraded at her gigs, including erecting barriers, because fans try to touch her inappropriately. “The crazy thing is, girls will try and do it the most,” Azalea said during the interview.

Fans have also posted inappropriate comments on Twitter about trying to grope the rapper while she crowd surfs. “I’ll see it and be like, ‘Please don’t! That’s a violation. I don’t actually like that stuff ’,” Azalea said.

Stars sprung skinny dipping The Other Woman co-stars were forced to stop skinny-dipping together on location in the Bahamas after paparazzi discovered their secret swimming spot. Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton went for a nude swim in between takes while filming in the exotic location and had so much fun splashing around it was decided they should make it a daily thing. But they had to cover up when photographers turned up on the beach. “We went skinny dipping in the Bahamas. The next day they (paparazzi) came and we had to stop, which was a real joy kill (sic),” Kate Upton told Live! with Kelly and Michael, an American morning talk show. But the supermodel-turnedactress insists she will be swimming naked again. “Skinny dipping is the best thing ever, why wouldn’t we go skinny dipping?”

Tight controls for synthetic cannabis

The Ashburton District Council’s hands are tied when it comes to synthetic cannabis sales in the district, but it is determined to create some tight controls about where the product can be sold.

Yesterday the council signed off the terms of reference that will guide the development of a draft local approved products

policy (LAPP). This will spell out the location of premises by broad areas, by proximity to other premises selling the same products and it will also be able to determine how close those outlets can be to schools, kindergartens or churches.

Councillors, however, felt local authorities had been backed into a corner on the synthetic cannabis issue and had been left to

tidy up the mess left behind by government legislation.

“We’d like ideally, to say no, we don’t want to have it in our district, but unfortunately we’re not allowed to do that,” said councillor Martin Nordqvist.

He is a member of the council’s LAPP working group that is working hard to come up with the most acceptable and workable options for the district. The

government has approved the sale of synthetic cannabis and has a programme of ongoing testing of varieties to ensure they comply with the Psychoactive Substances Act, 2013.

That the council had no say over whether it opts to sell synthetic cannabis riled councillor Stuart Wilson also.

Many countries were now grappling with synthetic can-

nabis and its impact on people and in spite of evidence proving it created huge social problems, the New Zealand government was taking a lax approach to the product, he said.

“I think it’s extremely lackadaisical of government to leave this to local authorities to deal with. The Government has the power to ban this product and I can’t understand why it hasn’t.”

Soldiers called to help clean-up A team of 16 engineers and support personnel from Burnham were also sent.

“Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy and Local MP Chris Auchinvole alerted me to the extensive devastation that the storm has caused in the Southern Westland region. Forestry has been flattened and there is a huge amount of clearing up to do. It is a major job,” Dr Coleman said. Winds of 130km/h were recorded on Thursday last week.

The Defence Force has been called in to assist the clean-up along 400km of the West Coast after a windstorm flattened forests.

Defence Minister Jonathan Coleman said the New Zealand Defence Force had nine people in Whataroa working with the local council to assess where they were needed after the tailend of Cyclone Ita whipped through last week.

“I asked the NZDF to provide appropriate assistance to Whataroa to help with the extensive clean-up following the recent storm,” Dr Coleman said.

Quilters compare threads in riot of colour, fabric

A steady stream of people flowed into Intermediate School yesterday as registrations for the national quilters’ symposium hosted by Ashburton-based Braided Ribbons group got under way.

The merchant mall in the main hall was ablaze with colour with fabric, threads, bits and bobs to delight every level of quilter. As people registered for the weekend, they popped into the hall for specialist supplies.

The mall has 13 nationwide merchants selling products not available in town and often only bought online - throughout the weekend.

Inside the hall, dozens of beautifully made quilts were placed around the hall, and through the library.

They were both hand-crafted and machine-made quilts, done in modern and

traditional designs loaded with enough colour to bombard the senses.

The four-day event has brought about 200 people from throughout the country into Ashburton.

They were here for classes and workshops in anything from beginners’ basic classes, fibre art with 3D imagery in a range of textures including metals, through to hand quilting techniques.

As part of the event, the Braided Ribbons group is running a business promotion with 30 quilts placed in shop windows around the central shopping area of Ashburton. Anyone can find the quilts and enter to win prizes.

Exhibition challenge quilts would be on show along with tutors’ quilts and the national Hoffman Challenge quilts.

There is also a $2 raffle to win a beautifully crafted queen-sized bed quilt made

by Ashburton’s Margaret Welsh.

A definitive moment in time

Ninety-nine years ago, the sunrise of April 25, 1915, was the last many young men would see.

By nightfall their bodies would lie, bloodied and still on the beach at what is now known as Anzac Cove on the Turkish peninsula.

Some would be identified and buried in graves that would mark their final resting place, many, many more, however,

would never be identified, their bodies left where they fell. The single reminder that they had been part of the Gallipoli campaign slaughter just a name on a memorial at Lone Pine cemetery.

Their comrades would fight on day after day for another eight months. Hundreds would die each day, hundreds more would be wounded.

Today when the sun rises in Ashburton it will be on a differ-

ent world, but the events of 99 years ago are still remembered across the generations.

Anzac Day is alive and well in the hearts as well as the minds of New Zealanders, thanks in part to the efforts of the Returned Services Association.

Each year members take the Anzac story into schools, sharing with children the events of the past. And it’s heartening to see that work paying off in growing attendances at Anzac

Day ceremonies says Ashburton RSA patron Malcolm Hanson.

“We explain to the children that the RSA doesn’t condone war, that it is about people helping people,” he said.

Members also talk to students about the sacrifices soldiers made in past wars and often about their own experiences, Mr Hanson said.

“I spoke at Borough School last year. I was there during the war and I told them what it was

like when a siren went, how we’d like down flat on the ground.”

Today Anzac services will be held around the Ashburton District, beginning at the Ashburton Cenotaph with a 6.30am dawn service, followed by a service at the Ashburton Cemetery soldiers’ plot at 9am.

Services will be held at Mayfield, Hinds, Methven and Rakaia this morning with the district’s civic service at the Ashburton Cenotaph at 11am.

War vet will march without his medals

Alex Thomson has always been proud to sport his war medals on Anzac Day, but today the Ashburton war veteran will sadly be without some of his most prized possessions.

Mr Thomson and police are still at odds as to who or why his five war medals were stolen from his Allenton home during a burglary last October – along with electronic items and alcohol – while he was in Sydney.

Today Mr Thomson will attend the local 11am service like he always has, but this time it will be without his British Defence, Victory, General Service with Palestine Campaign clasp, 1939-1960 British Service and New Zealand Cadet Forces medals.

He had hoped to have the originals returned for Anzac Day, or at least received replacements – but yesterday it

was appearing that would not be the case.

“It is sad, but then I guess it is what it is,” he said.

Prior to Easter weekend the

former British Army serviceman received replacements for two of the stolen medals, but sent them to Wellington earlier this week to be united with

replacements for the three remaining to complete the collection.

Mr Thomson served between 1946 and 1948 for the

British Army, for which he played bagpipes in the pipe band in the King’s Own Scottish Borders regiment and worked in the transport workshops.

New Zealand Collector Services assistant manager Julie Papps said war medals were “extremely important” to veterans and not having them on Anzac Day would be devastating.

The Christchurch-based dealer said Mr Thomson’s collection was unique, but speaking generally war medals “were not really worth stealing” with some of the most prized medals going for “a few hundred” while regular medals could range from $20 to $40.

She said collectors should have rigorous processes in place to ensure they weren’t receiving stolen medals, including two sets of proof of ID and recordings kept in a dealer’s book.

Searching for an ancestor’s war record?

Searching for an ancestor’s war record can yield a few surprises.

My search yielded information that now makes Anzac Day just a little more personal.

Checking out the war records of a distant relative, Leonard Rountree revealed he was among the thousands who died on the beach at Anzac Cove.

Unfortunately that search was undertaken several years too late.

My visit to Gallipoli was made in 2002 and while a day spent walking the beach, through the trenches and sitting in silence at the Lone Pine memorial was emotionally challenging, it would have been more so if I had known one of mine was among the fallen.

I knew my uncle Henry (Harry) Bennett had served in World War One. His death, post war in a farm accident is family legend, but the story of his cousin, Leonard was never told.

The cousins were born and raised in Willowby and Tinwald. Leonard headed to Egypt in October 1914, while Harry, who was several years younger, did not leave New Zealand until October 1916.

Thanks to the internet and the number of websites that contain war record information, finding the details of war service long gone is relatively easy.

There are several options when it comes to finding your ancestors’ war service details.

Those I used were accessed through www.nzhistory.net.nz.

And www.archway.archives.govt. nz On the NZ history site it is easy to find your way to the war memorials section. It has a great search function that allows you

He died on May 30, 1915, killed

in action. His body was never recovered and all that remains of a young man who died at 22 is a name on the Lone Pine Memorial in the Lone Pine Cemetery.

He was the son of Samuel and Catherine Rountree.

to key in the person’s name – it’s easier if you have both surname and Christian name.

The names come up and you can access a raft of information that has been sourced from military personnel files housed by Archives NZ. I discovered that Leonard had been killed during the Gallipoli campaign. He sailed for Egypt on

October 15, 1914, arriving in early December. On board the Orari were 16 officers, 269 men and 728 horses.

Alongside the Australian troops, the men from the Orari camped and trained in Egypt before being dispatched to France.

And then came the Gallipoli campaign that was to see about 2700 New Zealanders die, al-

Around 160,000 files – some of them with more than 600 pages – are being digitised and published.

More than half of the records supplied so far have been digitised and published both as single-page image files and also in PDF, which is a convenient and widely-accessible format.

Anzac Cove today is a place of memories; the Aegean Sea gently washes over the narrow strip of sand that separates water from land.

It’s a quiet and peaceful place where memorials, long neglected trenches and the occasional bullet shell are the only reminder that 99 years ago thousands of young men died fighting a battle many did not understand.

Among those who died were between 60 and 70 men from the Ashburton District.

The bodies of some were recovered and buried, others died and their bodies remained where they fell. A memorial at Lone Pine cemetery is the only marker to their short lives.

War records of those who fought in the eight-month Gallipoli campaign may never be complete; any attempt to detail the fallen will always be just that, an attempt.

Among those men from our district who died, at least five were killed in the first moments of that campaign, dying on April 25, 1915, 99 years ago today.

Our fallen Among the first to die were:

Private Wilfred Ellis Dove, Canterbury Infantry Battalion.

He sailed to Egypt on October 16, 1914, and was killed in action at Gallipoli. The 22-year-old’s body was never recovered and his name is listed among the missing on the Lone Pine Memorial.

Lance Sergeant William Alexander Hamilton, Canterbury Infantry Battalion.

He sailed for Egypt on October 16, 1914, and was killed at Gallipoli. He is buried at the Walker’s Ridge cemetery.

Private George Thomas Hayes, Canterbury Infantry Battalion.

He sailed to Egypt on December 14, 1914, and was killed in

Sergeant Thomas Henry Stevens, Canterbury Infantry Battalion.

He sailed for Egypt on October 16, 1914, and was killed at

Walker’s Ridge, Gallipoli. The 28-year-old’s body was never recovered and his name is listed among the missing on the Lone Pine Memorial.

MID CANTERBURY ANZAC SERVICES ■

Lance Corporal Thomas Francis Adams, Auckland Infantry Battalion.

He sailed for Egypt on October 16, 1914, and was killed in action at the battle of the landing, Gallipoli.

The 31-year-old’s body was never recovered and his name is listed among the missing on the Lone Pine Memorial.

Cadets play big part in celebrations

The Ashburton Cadet Unit will be taking up their usual roles for the Anzac services today.

New Zealand Cadet Corp major Cezarne Rodgers said that the cadets play a large role in the Anzac commemorations. “The cadets help out on Poppy Day every year and on the Thursday night before Anzac Day they come to the unit and stay the night. “(Today) we have three parades – dawn, cemetery and the civic service – the cadets have been practising for these for a month or so.”

Major Rodgers said that “the cadets talk about Anzac Day in the period leading up to it, they chat with the guys at the RSA and they are also aware of what a privilege it is to be on the Cenotaph in the four main positions for the services.”

This year there are seven cadets vying for these positions.

Hayden Adams and Scott Kelland, both 15 years of age and in their third year with the cadets, have two of these positions.

“Hayden and I are on the two corners of the cenotaph,” Scott said.

Staff Sergeant Claudia Kinvig, 17, is in her fourth year of cadets. She said for the past two years she had been on the cenotaph.

“This year I am helping with the calling, we give off commands to people on the cenotaph and flag.”

“I think that the importance of Anzac Day resonates with them, the senior ones especially as they have spent more time and it becomes more significant,” Major Rodgers said.

The Ashburton Cadets have 32 members at the moment, “aged between 13 and 18 years old”.

“Some of the first year ones have only been with us for a few months so it will take them a while to the see the significance (of Anzac Day).

“We do have a few who wear the medals (from their ancestors).”

Alongside this they skilfully added humour, stunning visual and facial treats, puppetry and body percussion delivering this in such a way that each and every member of the company was totally believable, 100 per cent of the time. Wow! Carefully integrate modern technology and you have the complete package.

It is with caution that individuals be mentioned and this is no exception. I was genuinely impressed with all the cast but need to mention a few by name.

Puck, the mischievous sprite, was portrayed by a very able Mitchell Farr accompanied by Oberon (Caleb Livingstone) a totally believable and convincing performance. The much-thwarted Helena was professionally covered by Abby Eastwood, a young lady who always enthrals me.

Libby Higson exuded character as Bottom, showing the full range of her acting skills. All other named characters gave flawless performances.

The story is well known by many and others may be put off by the mention of Shakespeare. Irrespective of your beliefs, I seriously recommend you treat yourself to an evening with these amazing young people and see Shakespeare as good as you will see it. From the moment the curtain goes up I guarantee you won’t know where to look next. I’ll be back again on Saturday to see the bits I missed tonight!

Police are hunting designer-loving thieves who have smashed their way into two OPSM eye wear stores and pinched more than $60,000 worth of top-end glasses.

Among the brands stolen are Dolce and Gabbana, Oakley, Oroton, Coach, Prada, Rayban, Ralph and Vogue.

Earlier this month offenders went to OPSM at Silverdale and used a large concrete paving stone to smash the shop front window. They took off with more than 90 pairs of designer brand sun-

glasses and fled the scene in a blue Subaru. It’s the second time the store has been hit in recent months.

In late March offenders smashed the front window and stole more than $35,000 worth of designer sunglasses.

Burglars also hit the Remuera OPSM branch taking similar designer items.

These sunglasses have LUXOTTICA and a P moulded on the side and may still have tags or sale stickers attached, police said. These sunglasses normally retail for $129-$530 a pair.

A capital day for royals In Prince William’s mind Australia is a brave nation and on the last night of his tour Down Under the popular royal met three of the best.

Behind closed doors at Canberra’s majestic Government House on the eve of Anzac Day, William and his wife Kate were greeted by three of Australia’s surviving Victoria Cross recipients.

Corporals Daniel Keighran and Benjamin Roberts-Smith along with SAS Trooper Mark Donaldson joined about 100 guests - representing the arts, business, charity, conservation, the military and sport - at a reception hosted by GovernorGeneral Peter Cosgrove.

Earlier yesteday William who served in the British military for seven and a half years - tipped his hat to Australian troops.

“Over the years, Australians have fought bravely for freedom in numerous conflicts,” he said in only his second speech during a 10-day tour of Australia, delivered at the Great Hall of Parliament House.

William added that along with brother Prince Harry, he and Kate looked forward to being part of events for the Anzac centenary in 2015, marking

Search resumes as debris ruled out Children found dead A South African woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after her three disabled children were found dead at their London home, British police say.

The Metropolitan Police said yesterday that a 42-year-old woman was in custody after the bodies of a four-year-old girl and two three-year-old boys were found this week.

The parents were named in the media as Gary Clarence, a senior executive at banking group Investec, and his wife Tania Clarence, a graphic designer. They are both from South Africa.

They had four children, and the youngest three had “lifelimiting” genetic disorders, according to a neighbour, who did not wish to be identified.

The Evening Standard newspaper said the children suffered from a disease called spinal muscular atrophy, and one of them was confined to a wheelchair.

Less than a 10th of the underwater search area for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight remains to be scoured, while the possibility of a fresh lead has been ruled out.

It emerged late yesterday that debris had washed up on a beach 10km east of Augusta, about 320km south of Perth and near Australia’s most southwestern tip.

A member of the public stumbled across the items, which were handed to Busselton police, who sent photos to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) for examination.

ATSB chief commissioner Martin Dolan immediately played down the find, saying the objects were “sufficiently interesting” enough to require

scrutiny, but adding: “The more we look at it, the less excited we get”.

Mr Dolan said the debris appeared to be sheet metal with rivets.

And by yesterday, the ATSB had concluded there was nothing to indicate the items were wreckage from the lost Boeing 777.

Congo train crash kills 57 At least 57 people have been killed after a passenger train sped off the rails in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The newly purchased locomotive flew off the rails as it went around a bend in a swampy area in the southeast of the country, causing 15 of the train’s 19 cars to overturn, a government spokesman said.

The official death toll was first given as 37 people, but

government spokesman Lambert Mende had warned it was likely to rise, and later gave an updated toll of 57.

A journalist at the scene said a local official had given a toll of about 60 dead and 86 wounded, while local human rights activist Timothee Mbuya said that “so far at least 100 bodies have been taken from the train and buried, because there’s no morgue”.

The train was travelling north from the town of Kamina in the southern province of Katanga to Mwene-Ditu in the diamond-mining province of Kasai-Oriental.

Witnesses said it was carrying hundreds of passengers both in and on its cars, many of whom had paid an illegal reduced fare to ride the train without a proper ticket.

Push for autopsies Some parents of the mostly teenage victims of South Korea’s ferry disaster are pushing for autopsies that might show their children were alive inside the submerged vessel and only died because the emergency response was so slow. The confirmed death toll yesterday stood at 169, but 133 were still missing as dive teams searched in near pitch-black conditions for bodies trapped in the ferry’s interior. More than a week after the 6825 tonne Sewol capsized and sank with 476 people on board, most of them high school students, there is still widespread anger among the victims’ families over the pace of the initial rescue effort. It took divers working in dangerous conditions more than two days to access the sunken ferry and two more days to retrieve the first bodies. Many relatives believe some of the victims may have survived for several days in trapped air pockets.

ext year New Zealand and Australia will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli which gave birth to the Anzac tradition.

This year’s Anzac commemorations, however, are just as special in their own right and arguably more significant in a global sense as it marks the centenary of the start of World War One. Numerous New Zealanders had already fallen victim to the senseless bloodbath of the Great War of 1914-18 before the first Kiwi set foot at Anzac Cove.

While our commemorations traditionally focus on this small beach head in Turkey, many more young New Zealanders gave their lives on battlefields of Western Europe and the Middle East.

Today we remember and honour all of them and others who travelled offshore to defend their country and the principles we believe in.

We now know that those young men in the Great War did not die for any principles, but merely as a result of the pride of politicians, kings and emperors.

Even more fell victim to the stupidity, arrogance and recklessness of their generals who were trained in a different era and refused to recognise that modern weapons and old tactics only lead to slaughter.

The Anzac landings, 99 years ago, were the perfect example as any reasonable person looking at those steep cliffs at Gallipoli could predict the ensuing bloodbath.

As the casualties from Australia and New Zealand mounted during this hopeless campaign, so did the resentment towards their British commanders.

The Anzacs and their families Down Under started wondering why they were sacrificing their sons for Mother England’s questionable campaigns.

By the time the remaining troops were evacuated from that Turkish beach, two new national identities were born.

The brave young men in the trenches of Turkey and France believed they were fighting to win the war to end all wars. Sadly the Great War merely proved to be the first chapter of several armed conflicts in the 20th century that claimed Kiwi lives.

We will never forget their ultimate sacrifice.

Supporting our rural volunteer firefighters A

bout a year ago a group of our local rural firefighters recognised the need for a welfare fund for its members, and their families.

The firefighters are the volunteers who live in our rural communities and who from time to time put life and limb at risk to save people and property from fire in the rural areas.

With the guidance of Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay they were introduced to the foundation to explore what might be possible.

A working group including firefighters Don Geddes, Bryan Pitt, Ian Fielder, Greg Bruce and Ian Moore and a couple of our trustees and executive officer (Margaret Rickard) set about designing a structure

that would collect donations, manage the investments and make grants as and when required.

The result of that group’s work culminated in the launch of the Ashburton District Volunteer Rural Firefighters Welfare Fund in February. The Ashburton District Council was right behind the funds’ establishment by being the settlor of the trust fund and being the first donor with a gift

of $10,000. Since then further donations from the public have been received and the fund stands at $23,475. The goal is to raise $100,000.

The Welfare Fund is administered under our umbrella so that we can attend to the bureaucracy, investment management and grant processing that comes hand in hand with charitable activities.

All applications for grants will be considered by a special group that will comprise four members of the Ashburton District Rural Firefighters Co-ordinators Group and two trustees from our foundation.

All grants that are approved in the future must be for charitable purposes and to persons that qualify under the scheme’s

New rule hits baby formula exports New Chinese import rules will have a “very significant impact” on local infant formula exporters who cannot prove they are closely associated with the production facilities in which their brands are manufactured, says Minister for Food Safety Nikki Kaye.

New Zealand officials have been formally briefed in the past 24 hours on the outcome of a Chinese audit of local manufacturing facilities that took place last month. The audit came ahead of new Chinese import requirements for infant formula, which come into force on May 1.

Many baby milk brands exported from this country are owned by companies that do not operate factories and instead have their products made by contract manufacturers.

Such brands account for around 10 per cent of the $200 million worth of infant formula this country exports to China annually, according to a joint

statement from Kaye and Minister for Primary Industries Nathan Guy. Kaye said Chinese officials had made it clear that they would require a close association between the infant formula brand owners and manufacturers.

“Yesterday they formally advised that in practice that means the brand owner having clear control over the manufacturing process and the product formulation for their brand,” said Kaye. “This will impact on those brand-owners who are unable to prove that close association. MPI will work with those brand-owners to advise them of options that could bring their brands into line with the new regulations.”

She said the new import requirements would have “a very significant impact” on exporters who are unable to demonstrate a close association.

Domestic baby milk manufacturers in China are also facing a raft of strict new requirements as the Chinese Government pushes to restore consumer confidence among its consumers following food safety scares including the 2008 melamine scandal, which killed six babies and sickened around 300,000 more.

Guy said the Government expected “most if not all” of New Zealand’s 13 infant formula manufacturers to achieve registration, although all but one firm had actions they needed to undertake before registration could be completed.

“MPI has provided details of those changes to the manufacturers this morning and in some cases changes have already been made,” he said.

Mixed bag for top 50 M

arkets have produced a mixed performance so far during the month of April. The NZX50 in New Zealand is down 0.7% this month, while the Australian market is up 1.6% and the UK market is up 1.3%. The S&P500 index in the US is up 0.4% for the month, although has seen some significant volatility in some sectors.

After hitting an all-time high in early April, the S&P500 fell 4% over the following days, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq index fell more than 8% from its highs.

This weakness was almost completely concentrated in the new breed of technology stocks, such as those involved with social networking (like Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn), internet-streaming company Netflix and electric car producer Tesla Motors.

These companies have all been star performers over the last few years, despite trading on very high valuations and having little in the way of genuine profitability to support these. Tesla, for example, saw its share price fall 24% and Facebook fell 21%. In New Zealand, high-flyers Xero and Pacific Edge have felt the brunt of this tech sell-off.

While some of the losses have since been recovered, Xero fell 38% from a high of almost $45 per share and Pacific Edge fell

Genesis Energy (GNE), the last of the Government mixed ownership model selldowns, listed very strongly last week, closing on its debut at $1.81, a 16.8% premium to its issue price of $1.55.

Much stronger demand than was previously expected saw significant scaling of investor allocations in GNE, which led to the strong opening performance as well as increased interest in the other electricity companies on the NZX. Since the end of January, the sector has been a very strong performer, with share prices in Meridian Energy and Mighty River Power rising 18.4% and 15.1% respectively during the period. Air New Zealand, the other company that the Government reduced its ownership in, has also performed well, rising 21.1% over this same period.

China’s annual economic growth rate for the March 2014 quarter came in at 7.4%, slightly better than expectations of 7.3% but below the 7.7% that was re-

corded in the previous quarter.

Reduced momentum in investment and consumption were drivers of the slower growth rate.

Most economists are expecting China to grow at approximately 7.5% during the 2014 calendar year. While this is still an excellent growth rate by most countries’ standards, for China it would represent the slowest rate of growth since 1990.

Having said that, the Chinese economy is 8.5 times bigger than it was in 1990, so even though the rate of growth is slower, this growth is coming off a higher base.

In New Zealand, the biggest event of the holiday-shortened week was the Official Cash Rate (OCR) announcement on Thursday. As the market had expected the OCR was increased from 2.75% to 3.00%, making it the second rate hike this cycle.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand cited inflationary pressures becoming more apparent as the economy picks up speed and the impact the high NZ dollar is having on import prices as the reason for the increase.

Earnings ahead of forecasts Facebook’s earnings nearly tripled and revenue grew sharply in the first quarter, surpassing Wall Street’s expectations thanks to an 82 per cent increase in advertising revenue.

It was the fourth quarter in a row that Facebook beat forecasts as it continues to barrel ahead in mobile advertising at a time when nearly 80 per cent of its users are accessing it on smartphones and other portable gadgets.

The world’s biggest online social network said yesterday that it earned $642 million, or 25 cents per share, in the January-March quarter, up from $219 million, or 9 cents per share, in the same period a year ago.

Adjusted earnings, which exclude stock compensation expenses and other costs, were $885 million, or 34 cents per share, in the latest quarter.

Facebook’s revenue was $2.5 billion, up 71 per cent from $1.46 billion in the same period a year ago.

Analysts, on average, were expecting adjusted earnings of 24 cents per share on revenue of $2.36 billion, according to a poll by FactSet. Shares of Menlo Park, California-based Facebook climbed $2.34, or 3.8 per cent, to $63.71 in extended trading after the results came out.

The stock had closed down $1.67, or 2.7 per cent, at $61.36

amid a broader market decline.

There were 1.28 billion monthly Facebook users at the end of March, up 15 per cent from a year earlier. The number of users who log in every day increased 21 per cent to 802 million.

The number of Facebook users who log in at least once a month using mobile devices climbed 34 per cent to surpass 1 billion for the first time.

Daily mobile users were 609 million, up 43 per cent from a year ago.

Advertising revenue totalled $2.27 billion.

Of this, mobile advertising accounted for $1.34 billion, or 59 per cent. That’s a bigger share than in the fourth quarter of 2013, the first time mobile accounted for more than half of Facebook’s ad revenue, at 53 per cent.

Facebook held a 6 per cent share of worldwide digital ad revenues last year, according to research firm eMarketer, which expects the company’s share to grow to nearly 7 per cent this year.

Google, in comparison, garnered 32 per cent of worldwide digital ad spending in 2013 and is expected to drop slightly to a fraction below that number by the end of 2014.

On the mobile front, Facebook accounted for nearly 15 per cent of worldwide ad revenue and is expected to steal

against some of Apple’s patent claims.

Amputees who wear artificial limbs can suffer from sores where the limbs rub against their skin.

That can prevent them from using the artificial limbs which flows on to poorer health. Researchers at Southampton University developed a pressure sensor that detects detect rubbing as well as downward pressure. The sensor is taped into a liner in the socket that connects the stump and the artificial limb. Data goes to clinicians for monitoring and to decide if any adjustments are needed. The researchers hope to develop a smartphone app and system to adjust the fit of the socket so users can monitor themselves.

In comparison, Google’s share was 49 per cent last year and is expected to drop to about 47 per cent by 2014’s end.

Facebook also said its chief financial officer, David Ebersman, is leaving on June 1 after five years. He’ll be replaced by David Wehner, currently vice president of corporate finance and business planning.

“David set us up to operate efficiently and make the long term investments we need, and built an incredibly strong team including Dave Wehner, our next CFO,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement.

Facebook’s results came the same day the Federal Trade Commission cleared its $2 billion acquisition of Oculus VR, a maker of virtual reality goggles.

The company also agreed to buy WhatsApp, a mobile messaging service, for $19 billion during the first quarter.

The company is largely using Facebook stock to make both purchases.

Facebook’s valuation and the exorbitant price tags of the deals is raising questions among tech industry experts about whether the sector is in the midst of a bubble not seen since the turn of the century.

If you find the lift to the 4th floor slow just think about how lifts work in skyscrapers. In Guangzhou, southern China, is a skyscraper due to be completed in 2016. The lift in that building will reach speeds of 72 kph as it takes 43 seconds to carry its passengers to the 95th floor. Because of the height and the speed the lift will change air pressure as it travels so no-one’s ears get blocked. The tower may also warp slightly in the wind, so guiding rollers will help keep the ride smooth. If the lift malfunctions normal brakes could fail because of heat, so brakes able to resist extreme heat will activate in an emergency. What goes up fast must come down fast.

Going back in time Google has added virtual time travel to its internet offerings. The technology titan began letting people turn back the clock on Street View images to show how places have changed over the seven years it has been collecting pictures for its free online map service. “If you’ve ever dreamt of being a time traveller like Doc Brown, now is your chance,” Street View product manager Vinay Shet said in a blog post, referring to a character from the 1985 comic fiction film Back to the Future.

“If you’re a kid today, 50 years from now you’ll be able to walk through the memories of your old neighbourhood,” Google senior vice president of infrastructure Urs Holzle said.

Century up for van Dyk Sharpshooter Irene van Dyk is hoping to celebrate her 100th ANZ Netball Championship match in winning style tomorrow.

The Pulse host the Melbourne Vixens in a rematch of their first ever ANZ Championship game, and since that loss in 2008 have never beaten the Vixens.

The Pulse players are more than determined not to let history repeat itself on what is van Dyk’s 100th ANZ championship match but have no illusions about the size of the task ahead, after watching the Vixens demolish the Adelaide Thunderbirds last Saturday,.

Van Dyk’s first ANZ Championship game was for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic in 2008 against the Thunderbirds and since then she has played 92 games for the Magic and seven for the Pulse.

“I can remember that first season, we thought that every game was like an international,” van Dyk said.

“It still feels like that.

“The competitiveness of the teams has changed and the

teams are now more even.

“It is a whole step up and it is pretty physical.

“The calibre of player has evened out as the championship has developed. There is now more depth in the teams and teams can potentially call upon their bench players.”

Van Dyk is just the second player to reach the 100 games milestone, following the Northern Mystics’ Laura Langman, who ran on court for the 100th time against her former team the Magic last weekend.

The Magic’s Casey Kopua will also reach a century on Sunday, and will be closely followed by the Vixen’s Geva Mentor (96 games), the Mystic’s Maria Tutaia (96 games) and the Fever’s Natalie Medhurst (95 games).

In addition to the Pulse’s clash with the Vixens being van Dyk 100th game, this weekend promises to be a huge ANZAC sporting occasion in Wellington with the Hurricanes face the Queensland Reds in Super 15 rugby and St Kilda Saints take on the Brisbane Lions in the AFL. - APNZ

He’s already managed to make Volvos look cool and introduced ‘jandals’ to Australia now Scott McLaughlin is hoping for Kiwi domination.

The 20-year-old V8 Supercar driver is one of three New Zealanders chasing glory on home soil at this weekend’s four-race round in Auckland - the only fly-away event of the year.

McLaughlin won his first championship race at the Pukekohe circuit as a rookie last year in a Holden, becoming the youngest ever victor in Australian touring car history.

But a win in 2014 with newcomers Volvo, he says, would be extra special.

“One, it would mean I’d win at home again which is great,” he said. “But also I’ve got a chance now that I can be Volvo’s first winner, too.”

The youngster became an overnight sensation after swearing on live television while describing his tense last-lap duel for second place with five-time defending champion Jamie Whincup at the season-opening Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.

Celts facing season’s biggest test

Celtic’s Matt Winter filled in as captain last week, and this week he fills in at first-five when the two unbeaten teams in section two of the Combined Country Cup rugby competition go headto-head.

After three rounds of the combined competition Celtic tops the standings, but know they have their work cut out for them hosting their fellow unbeaten Lincoln tomorrow.

“We have been going pretty good to be three from three, but this weekend will be the

biggest test yet,” Winter said.

“We might have three wins but haven’t really put together a full 80 minute performance yet or even close to it, which is probably a good thing at this time of year.

“There is plenty to work on but we’ll need to step up again this week.”

John Galbraith had taken up the number 10 jersey, providing experience and an accurate boot to guide the side around the park, a role that falls to Winter this weekend in Galbraith’s absence.

experienced head to steer the ship, and now I’ll have to run things as best I can.”

Winter prefers second five but has proved a useful utility back, slotting in anywhere in the backline since joining the senior side last season.

He played his junior rugby at Celtic up until under 13s, and returned to the club last year to play for the seniors.

Lincoln are two time winners of the combined competition from six final appearances, making the top eight in all seven seasons, and in comparison Celtic is light on big game experience.

They had a trip to the Watters Cup final in 2012 and were a first time quarterfinalist in the Combined Country Cup since the 2007 expansion last year.

Hoping to go further this year, tomorrow’s game will give them an indication of where they are at.

“Lincoln are a proven good side with plenty of experience so it will show us where we are at.

“We have a pretty simple but effective game plan and a forward pack that can match it with them.”

While Celtic look to remain

unbeaten Southern are chasing their first win when they head to Waihora.

Ohoka are at home to Glenmark and West Melton meet Saracens, with Burnham-Dunsandel on the bye.

In section one after a 59 point hammering from Rakaia, Hampstead head to face the two-time defending champions Southbridge, who have averaged 47 points a game in their three bonus point wins.

Rakaia host Darfield, Ashley are at home to Oxford, Kaiapoi play Prebbleton and Methven are on the bye.
