It was sunny and the track was dry, but atrocious weather leading up to the Ride Forever Mountain Thunder Motorcycle Street Race event yesterday kept many people away.

The popular Methven race usually attracts up to 5000.

Co-ordinator Sue van den Heuvel said yesterday while

many competitors had known the event would go ahead wet or fine, there were potential spectators who had been put off by heavy rain, and wild weather further afield, in previous days.

As a result numbers were down on last year, although she could not say what the actual numbers or gate takings were as they were still being assessed.

“Overall we were still very

happy with the day, given the challenges leading up to it with the weather,” she said.

President of CAMS, which runs the event in conjunction with the Methven Lions Club, Dave Reesby, agreed.

“It was a great turnout of 120 bikes ranging from 1929 to 2014. Lower numbers of spectators this year wasn’t a surprise given the weather forecast, but

the crowd was still pleasing and they enjoyed some great racing.”

Close racing and spectacular crashes featured.

In the pre-72 class the top three were no more than a few seconds apart for all races, while Formula Methven was “spectacularly fast” with eventual winner Dan McKenzie swapping places with current New Zealand superbike champion Dennis

Charlett all day.

The few crashes which did occur mostly resulted in bruises, but one Christchurch rider hit by another on the first turn of the junior clubman’s race required further medical treatment with suspected broken leg bones.

George was relatively well-behaved, if a bit nervous at first, but then quite friendly. And so was Prince George. The two came face-toface yesterday at Taronga Zoo’s enclosure, where it was officially named the Prince George Bilby Exhibit as part of Australia’s gift following the prince’s birth on July 22 last year. Kate carried George - dressed in dark blue shorts, a striped lighter bluecoloured shirt, dark blue socks and shoes - as they entered the zoo. He looked inquisitive, and was chuckling and looking at the cameras.

NZ gives Nigella entry waiver Celebrity cook Nigella Lawson has been given a waiver to work in New Zealand next month, required because she was barred from the United States after admitting cocaine use. The British star is visiting New Zealand to make a new TV commercial for chocolate maker Whittaker’s - but she wouldn’t have been able to come without the Immigration NZ exemption. In a statement, Immigration NZ said Lawson had been granted a work visa under “special direction” laws. It is the first confirmation that Lawson has been stopped from travelling to the US, where she presents a TV cooking show.

Harry Potter heads top 100 books Roald Dahl, JK Rowling (right) and JRR Tolkien are among New Zealand children’s favourite authors. Hundreds of children aged 10-13 nominated their favourite books when surveyed by Mills and Harrington from March to June 2013. In what may be a game changer in the Scottish independence referendum this September, the elusive Loch Ness Monster has reportedly been spotted on Apple Maps. Images on the satellite mapping service shows what appears to be a 100-ft-long floating creature, using its flippers to wade through the Loch in the Scottish Highlands with its neck dipped down into the water.

Andrew Dixon, one of two people who separately spotted the Nessie-like figure, told the Daily Mail: “It was a total fluke that I found it. I was looking at satellite images of my town and then just thought I’d have a look at Loch Ness.” The charity worker for the Great North Air Ambulance from Darlington, County Durham, added: “The first thing that came into my head when I saw it was, “That’s the Loch Ness Monster”. It was the shape of it I thought it had to be something more than a shadow.”

Mr Dixon alerted the President of the Official Loch Ness Monster Fan Club to the picture, who was pleased that the beast had been “seen” for the first time in 18 months.

Mr Campbell, who keeps a register of sightings, said: “We’ve been looking at it for a long time trying to work out exactly what it is. It looks like a boat wake, but the boat is missing. You can see some boats moored at the shore, but there isn’t one here. We’ve shown it to boat experts and they don’t know what it is.”

Tiger sequel comes to NZ A follow-up to the martial arts classic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon will be filmed in New Zealand. The eagerly awaited sequel stars Hong Kong martial artist Donnie Yen and Malaysian actor Michelle Yeoh, and many lead actors will be reprising their roles from the 2000 film. It is understood preproduction has started on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II - the Green Destiny and shooting will begin in July. Filming will be done at the Auckland Film Studios in Henderson, site of high-profile productions including the Chronicles of Narnia films, Emperor, Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules. The new film is being produced by Hollywood studio the Weinstein Company, with Auckland-based Iron Knight Productions. The production team in Auckland and co-producer David Thwaites in Los Angeles declined to comment.

Alan a man who loved life By susan sandys

Ashburton great grandmother Rona Russell wants her close friend Alan Hammond remembered for the wonderful life he led, rather than his tragic death.

The 80-year-old Ashburton granddad was struck by a vehicle while walking, about 1.5 kilometres from his parked vehicle, on State Highway 1 south of Hinds shortly before 3.15am on Good Friday.

Mrs Russell, 81, learned what had happened to her card player friend and 206 Club companion later that morning, after a family member called her out of a St David’s Easter church service.

“He just loved life and he never saw wrong in anybody,” Mrs Russell said.

Mr Hammond, a Korean War veteran, immigrated to New Zealand with his wife Alma and two children, from England in 1966, to take up a position in the Ashburton Silver Band, which sponsored his trip. A bus builder and painter, he worked for Mid Canterbury Transport, then Ashfords and Crum Brothers.

The couple lived happily in Ashburton, their children doing well at school, and Mr Hammond went on to join other bands and played the Last Post at Anzac Day services in the town for 15 years.

But Mrs Hammond was diagnosed with cancer, had a breast removed, and later became seriously ill. Mrs Russell has writings of Mr Hammond’s in which he recounted the experience.

“Viewing all the others in the ward dying of cancer, I then thought, ‘What a selfish life I’m living’. As I went home I prayed, a deep down prayer, away down inside I said ‘Is there anything I can do for others?’”

He then saw a situations vacant advertisement for an IHC workshop director at Tinwald,

and felt he owed it to God to apply for it. He did not get the job at first, but was called on after Mrs Hammond passed away. As it worked out the job fitted in well with caring for his children, aged 14 and 11.

“That is just how God guided me. I still like to do things for other people,” Mr Hammond

wrote. And that is just how Mrs Russell, who lost her husband three years ago, remembered her friend – a family man, proud of his children and grandchildren, who would help others whenever he could.

Yesterday she chatted about him and played cards with her four-year-old neighbour Jesse

Tilialo, who would always visit when Mr Hammond was there, and even called him Poppa.

“They played and they laughed and they romped around,” Mrs Russell said.

Jesse had done some drawings of him and Mr Hammond over the weekend, which would be going into his coffin.

More students choosing scooters over bikes

More children may be walking or riding scooters to school because parents are concerned about kids biking on the road, an Ashburton principal says.

Figures this week show there has been a dramatic drop in the number of youngsters biking to school, resulting in more traffic on the road. It has been attributed to many parents perceiving biking to school as dangerous.

In 1989, children aged between 5 and 17 clocked up 35 million kilometres when biking to school, while in 2013 that sat at just 10 million kilometres.

Last week, the Guardian highlighted concerns local schools

held over double-parking and speeds on surrounding streets, while last year cycle lanes were extended on Harrison Street after pleas from local school children.

Hampstead School principal Peter Melrose said just 15 pupils now rode bikes to his school each day, compared with up to 90 who come by footpath-ridden scooters. There was also a marked increase in pupils being transported by car.

“And that’s probably a good thing in terms of getting kids off the road because they are getting busier,” he said.

He said parents felt there was more control when children were on the footpath and there

was an increased distance between trucks and large vehicles.

Ashburton Intermediate principal Gavin Cooper has made no secret of his concerns over the two roundabouts near the intersection of Walnut Avenue and West Street.

He believed parents in larger cities would be more concerned than in towns like Ashburton, but that did not stop the school from advising pupils during its cycle-safe programme to ride in groups to be more visible.

Ashburton police officer Pup Chamberlain said scooter safety was recently added to education programmes, highlighting the dangers near driveways and intersections.

More children are riding scooters to school, which many Mid Canterbury parents may see as a safer alternative to riding a bike on the road.

Massive slip at gold mine

By Teuila FuaTai A massive slip at the open pit of the Macraes Gold Mine in Otago cut off access to underground workers , mining company Oceana Gold says.

The company confirmed the slip occurred yesterday following heavy rain in the area. The mine site, which consists of an open pit, an underground mine and an adjacent processing plant, is located between Palmerston and Ranfurly.

Cost of arson $1m

By Teuila FuaTai The cost of damage to public buses set alight in an arson attack yesterday will be well over $1 million, NZ Bus says.

The attack at the Karori bus depot, which left two buses completely destroyed and a third badly damaged, is the second suspicious fire at the Darwin Street site in six months.

It was reported to authorities about 3am, and took 30 minutes to extinguish, Fire Service central communications shift manager Mike Wanoa said.

Three other buses received more minor damage in the blaze.

In November, four buses were completely destroyed and two others damaged in a similar early morning blaze at the depot.

After the incident, a full-time security guard was posted at the fenced-in site.

Despite this, the culprit of yesterday’s attack still managed to get into the depot.

NZ Bus chief operating officer said the security guard was at the other end of the locked site when the fire broke out.

“It was them that discovered the fire and got the fire service there very quickly, but unfortunately at that point in time he happened to be at the other end of the facility.”

“The police and fire are there currently. They have the scene secure at the moment and are working through their early investigations,” Ms Drew said.

The buses involved in the November attack were relatively new additions to the fleet.

Ms Drew said the two buses completely destroyed in yesterday’s fire were also new additions.

“At the Macraes open pit operation, located at Macraes Flat, Otago, a section of the west wall failed following heavy rainfall,” Oceana Gold said in a statement.

“The wall was being continuously monitored and there were not personnel working in the open pit at the time of the failure. Access to the underground mine was cut off by the failure, but the underground mine itself is unaffected.”

All staff who were working

underground were brought safely to the surface.

APNZ understand the workers were flown to safety by helicopter, and the mine closed as a result of the slip.

Oceana Gold said it expected “minimal impact” on its shortterm production, with stockpiles of ore available for processing.

Worksafe NZ confirmed an investigator was on their way to the mine site today.

Group employees working at the Macraes mine were laid off as a result of cost-cutting measures at Oceana Gold.

Oceana Gold spokesman Darren Klinck confirmed a helicopter flew underground workers out of the pit after the slip cut off the mine’s haul road.

“We expect to repair the haul road over the next few days.

No injuries of any sort and we were monitoring the movement as we always do,” he said.

Worshippers turn out in droves

Four fire call-outs Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade members have responded to four fire call-outs since Friday night. There were two false alarm call-outs due to private fire alarm activations, one at Ashburton Central shopping centre on Tancred Street at about 7.15pm and one at about 10.40pm to a house, on Good Friday. Yesterday there were two call-outs, one at midday and another at 1.30pm, both to assist St John ambulance staff with a medical call-out.

Shutdown extended An unexpected compressor breakdown has extended the Marsden Pt Oil Refinery’s planned shutdown by up to 10 days and could cost NZ Refining up to $17 million in lost earnings. Refining NZ communication and external affairs manager Greg McNeill said the problem, which led to the shutdown of the refinery’s hydrocracker that makes diesel, should not affect the country’s fuel stocks, but will hit the company’s bottom line. Mr McNeill said the shutdown, which started in early March, was due to finish earlier this month, but as the hydrocracker was being started up again on Sunday an associated compressor - which was not part of the shutdown maintenance - failed.

Island under threat

Remnants of human habitation on New Zealand’s remote Campbell Island are at risk of being wiped out. Aucklander Norm Judd, who has visited the island nine times since 1975, said Hooker’s sea lions and scrub growth could destroy the sites before there was an opportunity for a thorough examination. Scrub has been rapidly regenerating on Campbell Island since wild sheep were removed in 1991. It is covering traces of early encampments.

Judd and three archaeologists are preparing a business case to persuade the Department of Conservation to fund a summer expedition to clear vegetation and fence sites.

Dramatic escape A Waitaki woman has described her dramatic escape from her submerged car after it was swept off the road by floodwaters on Friday morning. Rhoda Davidson, 61, was driving from her Fuschia Creek home to her job at Oamaru KFC around 11am when, misjudging the depth and speed of the water crossing the road north of Five Forks bridge, her car was swept down the Kakanui River until caught in a fence. Ms Davidson used a small fire extinguisher in the car to smash out the driver’s side window and climb onto the roof. A passerby who saw Mrs Davidson on the roof of her car surrounded by water then notified emergency services.

Search for gun used in shooting Children The gun used to shoot a 39-year-old man in Gisborne early yesterday has not yet been found, police say.

The man was left fighting for his life after another man entered his house in the suburb of Elgin and made demands about 2.40am.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Scott said the offender then shot one of the house’s occupants before leaving the scene in a vehicle.

“We believe this man is known to the two people who were at the address.”

The victim was taken by ambulance to Gisborne Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

A 42-year-old Gisborne man was arrested “without incident” by members of the police armed offenders squad at another local address between one and two hours after the shooting.

He had been charged in connection with the incident and will appear in Gisborne District Court tomorrow.

“We’re looking at the scene and we’ll continue to examine that in conjunction with the ESR forensic scientists and we’re hoping to speak to anybody who may have information,” Mr Scott said.

A vehicle believed to be connected to the incident was also being examined, however the

firearm used in the shooting had not yet been found.

Police have urged anyone with information about the firearm or the shooting to contact Gisborne police or the Crimestoppers line, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Earlier this morning, police said the shot man had died in hospital as a result of his injuries, but they later said he had not died.

Gruelling rehearsals ahead of show

As their friends slide off on school holidays, Big Little Theatre Company members, including (from left) James Brady, Oliver Livingstone, and Libby Higson, are undertaking a gruelling rehearsal schedule. They are preparing to stage Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, opening on Friday at 7pm. Billed as a “magical infusion of puppetry, animation and contemporary dance”, the show will also run on Saturday at 7pm and Sunday at 2pm. Rehearsals throughout term one culminated in a 9.30pm after-school finish on Thursday, while the about 50 six to 15-year-olds involved will return on Tuesday for both day and night rehearsals, hopefully having a day off on Thursday before the big opening night.

A week of calmer weather on its way Holidaymakers and children home for the school break might have to dodge showers this week, but there should be no repeat of last week’s bruising storm in the lead-up to Anzac Day. After a weekend that saw many Auckland residents left without hot water and Westland homes without power, the week ahead promises to be a lot calmer.

MetService predicts improving conditions across the country today before isolated areas of wet weather over a few days.

Duty meteorologist Nicole Ranger said it was too early to say what to expect on Anzac Day on Friday, but the top half of the North Island could be in for a few showers.

The bottom half of the island could also expect rain or showers with a southerly change.

In the South Island, the east can expect a fine day with high cloud, while rain will ease in the west.

A warm flow over New Zealand on Thursday should mean it won’t be too cold on Friday, Ms Ranger said.

The tail of ex-cyclone Ita made for a stormy Easter weekend for most, with high winds bringing down trees and powerlines.

Pockets of west Auckland and the North Shore have been without hot water for four days after power lines were brought down on Thursday, when excyclone Ita hit the city, causing extensive flooding on Tamaki Drive.

Some hot water pilots - which supply electricity to hot water cylinders, independently of the main power supply - were not

reconnected, even after power was restored.

Vector spokeswoman Sandy Hodge said crews were making good progress in reconnecting affected pilots, and were working in Ranui, Te Atatu South and Bayswater. They would then move on to Huapai, Glendene, Campbells Bay and Narrow Neck, Ms Hodge said.

In Westland, 300 residents were still without power. For affected residents south of Fox Glacier, it could be a couple of days at least until their power is restored.

ask for privacy after tragic deaths

By DaviD Bruce The three children of the Waianakarua couple tragically killed on Thursday are together with family, trying to cope with the loss of their parents.

They have asked for privacy to do that, head of the inquiry into the homicide and murder, Detective Senior Sergeant Malcolm Inglis said yesterday.

Kim Gordon Simpson, 51, was killed about 4.15am in a car crash on SH1 about 2km south of the Olive Grove Lodge and Holiday Park he owned with his wife, Lynette Mary Simpson, 52.

He drove his Land Rover Freelander across the centre line while travelling south and hit an on-coming truck, police said.

When police went to notify Mrs Simpson about 7am of the crash, they found her dead.

That led to a homicide-murder inquiry at both sites.

Two sons, in their late teens, were sleeping in a sleep out and did not know what had happened to their parents until police arrived.

Mr Inglis said they, and an older sister, were staying with family out of North Otago.

“They are coping with family as best they can to come to grips with what has happened,” he said.

Post mortems had been completed in Dunedin on the couple and police were awaiting autopsy reports before they could say how Mrs Simpson had died.

Earlier, Mr Inglis had said it was “a violent death” and confirmed yesterday a weapon, but not a firearm, had been used on Mrs Simpson.

At the start of the inquiry, about 20 were involved in the investigation at both the crash site and holiday camp.

That was reduced to 10 for scene examination at the holiday park, which was completed late on Friday, he said.

About five to six officers were working on inquiries yesterday and would continue to do so over the next week, when it was hoped reports would be ready to refer to the coroner.

Alcohol number one drug of choice

Mid Canterbury has just the same alcohol and drug issues as the rest of the country, says the head of local alcohol and drug support agency ACADS. General manager Chris Clark said there were alcohol and drug issues across the board in the district and they were no less than the rest of the country.

Ms Clark’s comments come on the back of a global drug survey

on worldwide drug use.

It showed more middle class people drank alcohol and indulged in legal, and illegal, drug use.

In the survey, alcohol was the most commonly used and a large number of people admitted to drinking until they blacked out.

Ms Clark said in Ashburton there was no stereotype for drug users, just as there was no type that drank alcohol. And just like the rest of the country, there was an increase in the number

of people who abused prescription drugs such as oxycodone, or even nurofen.

“It did not bring up anything we did not already know.”

“It’s certainly there and it’s across the board … anything can be abused”.

She said people often went for the feel good factor from something they could easily access.

Synthetic cannabis use and its consequences was causing concern in Mid Canterbury now, with the side effects of its use

affecting users nationwide.

It affected teenagers through to people in their 30s, she said.

Problems with its use had included people developing paranoia and those with mild mental health issues had seen them aggravated.

Ms Clark said alcohol was still the number one drug of choice here.

“Anyone can have an addiction … people drink for all sorts of reasons.”

ing dependent, it’s about knowing your body, knowing your limits and setting them before people go out.”

Ms Clark said if people could not stick to those limits then they needed to look at their drinking.

Sometimes it was seen as a solution to a problem which compounded health issues.

She said anyone who wanted help or support for a family member could call in to ACADS for a chat.

New doctor learns ropes at Allenton

Allenton Medical Centre’s newest GP has taken up residence.

Dr Genevieve Syed has been learning the ropes at the practice for the past two weeks.

the practice manager. The new practice manager is Nicola Webb.

Dr Syed, who hails from Chicago, USA, has moved to Ashburton via London with her husband and son, 7. She trained in Colorado.

She said Ashburton offered a work opportunity for the family and they were happy to be here.

During her short time in town, Dr Syed had been learning the ropes with the different forms and processes of New Zealand’s medical system.

“I’ve been learning, learning,” she said, of her time here.

“The people are super nice and it’s easy to get around.”

The district reminded her of college (University) days in Iowa, which like Ashburton,

was a farming community in the American Midwest. It was a positive memory.

The family enjoyed travel and liked the distance Ashburton was from the city, an international airport and mountain skiing.

Dr Syed looked forward to extending her family practice scope and her interest in preventative medicine.

A second sexually motivated attack near Victoria University in Wellington has sparked fears a repeat offender may be preying on vulnerable young woman in the area.

The attack in Kelburn early yesterday comes within 24 hours of a similar incident in the same area on Saturday morning.

Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee said a young woman had been walking home to her house near the Boyd Wilson Field about 1am yesterday.

“She had put some safety measures in place - she had walked home with another couple.”

However, the woman was met by a man when she walked up an access way towards her house.

“He has spoken to her briefly and then indecently assaulted her before she’s run off to her home address.”

The incident comes after a woman was attacked after walking up the stairs from the Terrace to the Boyd Wilson Field about 1.55am on Saturday.

The victim screamed and fought off the attacker, then ran down towards the Terrace.

Mr McKee said houses around the university were popular among students, and many of them walked home from work or a night out in town using dimly lit paths and parks in the area.

“Unfortunately, this person is using that to prey on people on these people as they are walking home, and taking advantage of them.

“We’re pretty determined to catch this guy before something really serious happens.” - APNZ

Wasps sting three in Methven

Police hope road toll stays at three

Aggressive wasps stung at least three people attending Mountain Thunder in Methven’s town centre on Saturday.

Methven mum of two SallyAnn Kircher was among victims. She was stung on her lower lip by one of the wasps which was in her can of soft drink, as she took a sip, while staffing a fundraising stall.

“I had a look in the can and

didn’t see it. There just seemed to be hundreds of wasps,” Mrs Kircher said.

She went to the nearby Blue Pub where staff gave her some ice to put on the sting, but it remained painful for hours.

She saw another woman stung as she walked past the stall, the wasp dive-bombing and stinging her underneath her arm. She gave her some of her ice to help with the swelling.

In another case, a man told

her about being bitten on his thumb.

She hoped the Ashburton District Council would look into the problem as she believed there could be a nest nearby in the town centre, and the wasps posed a public health risk. As well as searching for nests, traps could be set up.

Ashburton pest controller AJ Kerr said it was likely the nest responsible for the infestation, most likely of German wasps, would be on private property.

If it was in a high traffic area it would most likely have been spotted.

“You have a lot of holiday homes up there which are empty over the summer, in the backyards of those houses (there can be nests),” he said.

“It’s just the fact we can’t get to them, we can’t find them.”

He said a dry winter favoured proliferation of wasps, however, this season in Methven had not been anything out of the ordinary.

Lamborghini takes on aerobatics plane By mark PricE At 7am on day one of the Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow, Jurgis Kairys and his aerobatics plane were in Blenheim.

Six hours later Kairys was still at the controls of his Sukhoi 29 aircraft but this time upside down, racing Greg Murphy in a Lamborghini Superleggera along the runway of Wanaka Airport.

A storm or two was not going to keep the ebullient Lithuanian from making his fifth appearance at the Wanaka show.

“You have perfect bad weather, and then I am fighting with that ...” he said as he recounted a difficult trip from Auckland.

The airshow’s main weather casualty was the Harvard aerobatic team, which was stuck in Auckland, although the plane park reserved for 80-90 light aircraft had just 12 - the rest held up in various places around the country.

Those who did make it to the show, including close to 50,000 spectators, were treated to high cloud, low cloud, full sun, part sun, warm breezes, cool breezes ... a typically changeable array of weather but nothing severe enough to affect the programme.

Show general manager Ed Taylor said the show had “dodged a bullet” by being handed comparatively fine weather.

Kairy’s race with Murphy was one of the feature events of the programme - Kairy upsetting his chances with some seat-of-the-pants aerobatics just a metre or two from the ground.

At times it appeared likely he would put a wingtip or propellor blade into the side of the Lamborghini.

Murphy: “I think he was just screwing with me.”

“There’s this propellor that doesn’t seem to be that far away from the window.”

Murphy was enthusiastic about another of the feature events on the programme - the Reno-style round the pylons jet racing.

“It’s got to rate right up there as the most crazy, exhilarating thing that could be done.

“I love it. I love every part of it.”

In contrast to the noise and speed of the jets, two gliders from Omarama showed how it

was possible to be spectacular without burning a drop of fossil fuels (tow plane aside).

With All Black captain and glider pilot Ritchie McCaw in the commentary box, pilots Darren Smith and Gavin Wills gave a seemingly faultless aerobatic display.

McCaw suggested the best way to watch was to simply listen to the music and enjoy the serenity.

There was not too much serenity attached to most of the other displays - from a modern Royal New Zealand Air Force Seasprite helicopter taking off

backwards to Mustangs, Spitfires and Kittyhawks “bombing” and “strafing” the runway in traditional airshow fashion.

Air show founder Sir Tim Wallis welcomed the crowd to one of the most scenic airports in the world and said he was always confident the weather would be up to scratch.

Instead of a Spitfire solo to finish, the 25th anniversary show ended with a fly past of a Sopwith Camel in acknowledgement of the centenary of the beginning of World War One. - APNZ

By Jimmy Ellingham Police hope to keep this year’s Easter road toll at three as they crack down on speeding, distracted and alcohol-fuelled drivers as holidaymakers head home.

The long weekend got off to a bad start on the roads, with three deaths within the first 12 hours of the holiday period.

Another three people died as a result of crashes on Thursday before the start of the official road toll period.

Acting road policing national manager Inspector Nic Brown hoped the toll would not increase today.

Police would be out in force on the roads as holiday makers return home.

“What we know is there is going to be a higher number of vehicles on the road and the distances that people are travelling will be further as they are returning from their holiday destinations.

“We know people are going to make mistakes but the thing is, it shouldn’t cost anybody their life or limb,” Mr Brown said.

“The indication is with those three fatalities and I don’t want to speculate on specific cases it does come back to your speed, whether you’re wearing a restraint or not. It’s really simple behaviour.”

Last year’s road Easter road toll was also three, while there were no deaths in 2012. The highest recorded number of deaths is 21 in 1971.

As with other holiday periods, police have lowered their tolerance of speeding drivers to 4km/h, and Mr Brown encouraged drivers to watch their speed and give themselves time to react. Auckland’s motorways are expected to be busy, though perhaps not as congested as previous Easter Mondays.

NZ Transport Agency spokesman Ewart Barnsley said with school holidays beginning and another public holiday on Friday, many travellers might put off their return to the city.

He expected congestion around Wellsford on State Highway 1, and in northern Waikato on SH1 and SH2.

“We do encourage drivers coming back into Auckland from up north to consider using SH16 as an alternative route.”

September 28 most popular NZ birthdate

If you believe your birthday is uniquely yours and that for one day of the year, life is all about you – you’re wrong.

Statistics New Zealand has compiled a birthday table that spells out very clearly that birthdays are shared occasions, none more so than for people who were born on September 28. This is the single most common birthdate in New Zealand.

The birthday rankings were compiled after an analysis of birth data from 1980 to 2013 and it proves that for many couples the new year celebrations are about more than just eating and drinking.

There’s also a fair bit of making merry too.

The 10 most common birthdays appear in the 13 day period from September 22 to October 4.

Whether by good luck or careful planning, April is a down-time on the baby making calendar with fewer babies born over the Christmas–New Year period.

In ranking order, the five most common birthdates are September 28, September 26 and 27 equal second, September 30 and September 29.

Most dates in September are high on the popularity score for births, with October also having its share of high ranked days.

The five least common are February 29, December 25, December 26, January 1, January 2. April 1 is not popular either, coming in, in 6th bottom place.

Couple die hours apart A couple who held hands at breakfast every morning even after 70 years of marriage have died 15 hours apart. Helen Felumlee, of Nashport, Ohio, died at 92 on April 12. Her husband, 91-yearold Kenneth Felumlee, died the next morning. The couple’s eight children say the two had been inseparable since meeting as teenagers, once sharing the bottom of a bunk bed on a ferry rather than sleeping one night apart, the Zanesville Times Recorder reported. They remained deeply in love until the very end, even eating breakfast together while holding hands, said their daughter, Linda Cody.

US weighs exercises

Everest toll rises to 13

The United States is considering deploying about 150 soldiers for military exercises to begin in Poland and Estonia in the next few weeks, a Western official said yesterday. The exercises would follow Russia’s buildup of forces near its border with Ukraine and its annexation last month of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula.

Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel in recent days has said the US is looking for ways to reassure its NATO allies of its strong commitment to collective defense. The Pentagon said that American officials are considering a range of additional measures to strengthen air, maritime and ground readiness in Europe.

Ground exercises in Poland and Estonia would last about two weeks, but such exercises would continue off and on over time, the official said.

Divers pull bodies from ferry The confirmed death toll from South Korea’s ferry disaster rose past 50 yesterday as divers finally found a way inside the sunken vessel, quickly discovering more than a dozen bodies in what almost certainly is just the beginning of a massive and grim recovery effort.

About 250 people are still missing from the ship, which had been packed with high school students on a holiday trip, and anguished families are furious with the pace of rescue efforts.

Divers had previously failed to enter the ferry, officials said, because of extremely strong currents and bad visibility due to foul weather.

Beginning late Saturday, when divers broke a window, and continuing into yesterday, multiple teams of divers have found various routes into the ferry, discovering bodies in different spots, coast guard official Koh Myung-seok said at a briefing. Thirteen bodies have been found in the ship, while six other bodies were found floating outside Sunday, bringing the official death toll to 52.

At least 23 of the dead are students, according to coast guard spokesman Kim Jae-in.

Divers have yet to find any survivors in the ship.

Nepal’s authorities temporarily halted climbing on Mount Everest while search teams dug through snow and ice yesterday for three Sherpa guides missing in the deadliest avalanche on the world’s highest peak that killed 13 others.

A section of the route over the dreaded Khumbu Icefall, a climbing pass where the avalanche swept a group of guides early Friday, has totally collapsed and a new trail has to be dug, ropes fixed and aluminum ladders laid over the crevasses before climbing can resume, said Ang Tshering of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.

Another group of Sherpas, who had already passed before the avalanche struck, were stranded on the other side and would only be able to get back to base camp once the new route is fixed, Tshering said.

Despite losing so many guides, there were no plans

A robotic submarine looking for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane continued to dive yesterday after completing about half of its search on the bottom of the Indian Ocean with no luck, prompting an official to express the urgent need to find something that can help solve the mysterious disappearance six weeks ago. The Bluefin 21 unmanned sub began its eighth trip into the depths off the coast of western Australia. Its search area forms a 10-km circle around the location of an underwater signal that was believed to have come from the aircraft’s black boxes before their batteries died. The sonar scan of the seafloor in that area is expected to be completed in five to seven days, the search center said.

Iraq attacks kill 16 Attacks across Iraq, including a series of bombings targeting shoppers in a Sunni neighborhood in the country’s capital, killed at least 16 people yesterday, authorities said.

The deadliest attacks struck Baghdad’s predominantly Sunni neighborhood of Dora, police said two bombs exploded on busy commercial streets, killing four people. Police said three more bomb blasts in the same area killed five people and wounded 10.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the blasts, though Shiite militants have retaliated in the past for Sunni insurgent groups killing their own.

The Sunni-led violence, part of a series of stepped-up attacks since last year, aims at undermining Iraq’s Shiite-led government ahead of a crucial vote later this month.

Trio flee burning car by expedition teams to abandon their attempt to climb the peak next month, he said.

Maddhu Sunan Burlakoti, head of the Nepalese government’s mountaineering department, said that the search for the missing three climbers resumed Sunday. They were among about 25 Sherpa guides hauling gear to the higher camps that their foreign clients would use in attempting to reach the summit next month.

near 5,800 meters (19,000 feet). The area is considered particularly dangerous due to its steep slope and deep crevasses that cut through the snow and ice covering the pass year round.

As soon as the avalanche occurred, rescuers, guides and climbers rushed to help, and all other climbing was suspended.

Four survivors were conscious and being treated in the intensive care units of several Katmandu hospitals for broken ribs, fractured limbs, punctured lungs and skin abrasions.

A mother and two children have been forced to flee their car when it overheated and then caught fire in a lion enclosure in Britain.

The trio were visiting Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire when the vehicle overheated on Saturday.

Photographs posted on Twitter show the 4WD-type car engulfed in flames in the enclosure, which is home to 12 lions. A spokesman for Longleat said the three occupants were transferred to a ranger’s vehicle before the car burst into flames. No one was hurt. Rangers managed to clear the animals from the enclosure and the park was temporarily closed while firefighters extinguished the blaze.

It is understood the woman alerted staff by sounding the car’s horn.

Apathy alive Sue Newman

A

pathy is clearly alive and well in the Ashburton District when it comes to anyone caring what’s happening with their rating dollars. Even an across-the-district rate rise of 8 per cent, with urban property owners carrying the can for most of this, doesn’t seem to have raised more than a flicker of interest. Rates bills will be bigger next year, but ratepayers are obviously happy with that.

Ashburton District councillors and staff must be scratching their heads, wondering what more they have to do to make people take an interest in their business. Rates rise most years to cover the cost of basic services and providing facilities the community expects. This year is no exception.

The council has just signed off its annual plan, the document that spells out what it will spend next year and how much it needs in rates to do that.

To make sure everyone has a chance to understand what’s being spent and why and to ask questions, the council takes its annual plan around the district in a public roadshow. Unfortunately that roadshow usually plays to an almost non-existent audience.

At virtually each meeting last week councillors and council staff have outnumbered members of the public. Ashburton meeting – 9 members of the public, Methven 1 and Hinds a huge turnout of 10.

There are two big ticket items in the budget, the art gallery and heritage centre and the EA Networks Centre. Both have caused some community angst along the way, but now the bills are coming in, it’s obvious, those who’re paying the bills are happy – they must be, no one has bothered to stand up and complain. Staff and councillors are prepared to stand up publicly, face the anticipated ire of ratepayers and defend their spending plan.

The council must draw one of two conclusions from that – either people are blissfully happy with the way the district is being run or the district is populated by individuals who fail to understand that complaining behind closed doors never changes anything.

New Zealand’s economy is shining, despite a global financial crisis and the aftermath of a destructive natural disaster.

Budget 2014 will be about thoughtful targeted spending, not a spend-up.

We’ve outlined that our investment focus will be on the areas that matter most to families – better healthcare, more effective education, safer

Over the past two years we’ve seen a $3000 lift in the average wage to $54,700 a year.

National will continue to keep government spending under control over coming years to avoid the Reserve Bank reacting by further tightening monetary policy and pushing up interest rates. By helping to restrict interest rate increases, we can make a significant contribution to family budgets.

Interest rates are currently at a 50 year low. Every one percentage point movement in mortgage interest rates is worth around $40 a week – or $2000 a year – for a family with a $200,000 mortgage.

So when you hear politicians promising to ramp up spending to pay for expensive election promises, you should remember this would come at a significant cost to New Zealand households and businesses.

In most corners of the world, an Ashburton person can be found. So the Guardian’s Erin Tasker decided to track some of them down. This week it’s Lizzie Brown who calls the United States home where she’s at university on a swimming scholarship.

inishing high school and moving to a country where she knew absolutely no one was the most terrifying thing Lizzie Brown has ever done.

The Ashburton woman moved to America to take up a swimming scholarship at an American university.

It was a scary time, but two years down the line she’s happy and reckons it’s the best decision she ever made. She loves school, her busy swimming schedule and the friends and ‘family’ she’s made over there.

Lizzie lives in a college town called East Lansing, which is on the outskirts of the state of Michigan’s capital city, Lansing.

“It’s pretty cool because it’s basically all students that live in the area. I actually have never been into downtown Lansing because we have everything we need on campus.

“There are 49,300 students enrolled here so you could say I’m a very small fish in a huge pond. The campus itself is 5200 acres, which is huge. The buildings are all really old and campus is beautiful. So many old buildings, sometimes I think I’m in Hogwarts or something.”

Lizzie was a well-known swimmer – having represented her country numerous times as she grew up – before she left Ashburton and she’s swimming now more than ever.

“I am over here on a full scholarship for swimming, which basically means if I swim for the school they pay for my schooling, food and accommodation which isn’t cheap.

“I love it, my team is my family and I don’t know what I would do without them.”

Her swimming calendar is full. “It’s certainly a full time job. I train 24 hours a week, give or take an hour, plus swim meets every other weekend. But I honestly love the competitions; they are so full of energy.

“Swimming is much more of a team sport over here. We aren’t just racing for ourselves, we score points for the entire team every time we race. Plus I get to go to Florida every December for training which is awesome.”

Travelling all over the US for competitions was tiring, but worth it.

Lizzie said the life experiences she had had in America, she could not have had anywhere else.

“Moving to a country where I knew absolutely nobody was

with Lizzie Brown in America honestly the strangest feeling ever. I’m pretty sure when I got here I just sat in my room for two weeks because I was too scared to do anything.”

Lizzie is studying child development and hopes to work as an early childhood teacher.

“In the long run I would really like to become a primary school teacher, but because the curriculum is different here I will just wait until I am home and am able to go to grad school.”

Swimming for the university means performing in the pool, as well as performing in the classroom. But like any 20-yearold Lizzie’s also trying to balance a social life in there. It’s a social life that’s a little different than the one she’d be having back home – the drinking age in America is 21.

America is very different to New Zealand but the people are “awesome”.

“It takes a while to get used to them at first as they can seem to be a little self-obsessed. But they aren’t at all, everyone has been so kind and I have several American families who take me in for different holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. They’re always happy to help me in any way they can.”

One of her most memorable moments was at the start of the year when student athletes got to go on to the university’s football field and make a tunnel for the football players.

“I have no words to describe how it feels being recognised by that many people. The excite-

ment is out of this world.”

There’s hard times too though.

“The worst part is just being away from my family and friends, especially at times like Christmas. My family means the world to me and being away from them is harder than I ever thought it would be. “ Her swimming team-mates and their families are her Amer-

ican families though and they take care of her.

Lizzie lives in a dorm with a room-mate. The rooms are tiny so it’s cosy, but a lot of fun.

The worst part of campus life is the food; Americans like fake cheese and everything fried, Lizzie said. She misses New Zealand food.

But most of all she misses her

family and is looking forward to coming home shortly for her summer break – a summer break in cold New Zealand.

She has another two years of study to go and whether she stays in America or comes home afterwards is up in the air.

“Most likely I will come home because I want to be with my family again.”

stanbul, the noisy metropolis on the Bosporus Strait lauded by many a travel ranking, has much more to offer than grand mosques and bazaars.

Away from the din of typical tourist haunts, a walk around the neighbourhoods of Karakoy, Balat and Kuzguncuk will peel back the surface to reveal the city’s multi-layered history.

And while headlines persist on Turkey’s uneasy political situation, which included a recent government shutdown of Twitter to silence critics, protests have dwindled for now. For tourism, it’s business as usual, with the government counting 35 million people visiting last year, a 10 per cent increase over the previous year.

KARAKOY Descending from the Galata Tower in the Beyoglu district, often regarded as the “pulse of Istanbul,” one of the city’s steepest hills will lead to Karakoy, an up-and-coming area hemming the Bosporus Strait.

This one-time industrial neighbourhood is still home to a number of shops where anything from fishing equipment to Bunsen burners can be procured. But the hardware stores and workshops must now negotiate their space with new galleries and cafes that have created a hub for young hipsters.

water, look for Namli Gurme, a restaurant and small marketplace offering a large selection of “mezes,” or cold appetizers.

Also served here is a cut of meat called “lokum,” which means Turkish delight and is the term for anything wildly tasty and juicy (unlike the narrower meaning of the term Turkish delight outside the country, referring only to chewy sugary candies).

One of Istanbul’s busiest baklava shops is next door, known for “sutlu Nuriye” or milky Nuriye, a puffier and creamier version of baklava. Farther north along the road parallel to the Bosporus, past a few deserted buildings and construction sites, a green iron gate opens into the Franciz Gecidi Is Merkezi, a small collection of cafes and restaurants.

Around an easily missed corner toward the Mother Mary Turkish Orthodox church nearby is another hidden nook for cafes that are usually full on the weekends.

Rakaia ran riot over Hampstead for a comprehensive 59-0 win in a Combined Country Cup and Watters Cup match on Saturday.

The defending Watters Cup champions have now secured a berth in July’s Watters Cup semi-finals and defended the Max Gilbert Challenge trophy which they will put up one last time in their final Watters Cup clash against Celtic in early July.

Rakaia ran in nine tries with seven conversions from Andrew Fluker, while Hampstead

were only lucky enough to come close to the try line once in the entirety of the match, spending 90 per cent of the match in their own half.

Tries to the back three of wingers Leps Seitava, Richard Burns and fullback Andrew Letham had Rakaia lead 21-0, but they couldn’t cross for the bonus point in the first half as Hampstead held them out, with 14 men for 10 minutes, until halftime.

Kaiapoi beat Oxford 19-7 in the other match.

Over in section two Celtic made it three wins in a row beating Glenmark 20-6, while Southern suffered a third defeat at the hands of West Melton 8-10.

Elsewhere Ohoka went down to Burnham-Dunsandel 5-15 and Lincoln beat Waihora 2011, with Celtic set to host the unbeaten Lincoln and Southern away to Waihora in this weekend’s fourth round.

Crusaders’ conservative game plan bearing fruit

There is belief, that much is obvious - you can’t win at Waikato Stadium without it - but there is also enthusiasm and energy and underpinning it all a game plan which is becoming devastatingly effective and will likely become more so as the weather closes in and games get tighter.

After several poor performances, the Crusaders put their South African trip to good use.

The game plan was put under the microscope; the good stuff kept, the stuff that didn’t add value thrown out.

The kick-first-ask-questions later plan worked against the Lions in Johannesburg, the smash them up front and run them ragged in the backs did likewise against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein.

Against the Chiefs it was back to the Lions plan of kick for territory and keep the pressure on.

Holding the New Zealand Waterski Nationals in Auckland’s Orakei Basin while Cyclone Ita lashed the city was less than ideal, but Mid Canterbury skiers still produced winning runs.

The Waterski Lake Hood Club claimed a clean sweep in the junior boys jump and trick, while Hugh Donaldson claimed a clean sweep over all three disciplines.

Jumping into a headwind, Hugh Donaldson landed 29.8m for the win with twin brother George second with a 25.5m and Lachie Woodman third with his 24.8m effort.

In trick Hugh claimed a second win, with Woodman second and George third.

Hugh then made it three gold medals taking out the slalom with George second and Woodman fourth.

Hugh also stepped up to compete in the open men’s trick and was fifth overall.

Hannah Wright landed a 24.9m to win the girls’ with Gabriella Woodman second with 13.9m, and it was the same onetwo finish in trick. Wright was third in slalom with Woodman fourth.

In the under 21 women’s Rachel Donaldson won the slalom and was third in the women’s under 21 and the open women’s trick. Leighton Hood was third in the under 21 men’s trick.

Karl Donaldson took out the men’s slalom, Lana Donaldson was second in the women’s slalom and trick as well as coming fifth in the open women’s trick.

Neil Donaldson was second in the senior men’s 2 trick.

The nationals will wrap up today with the remaining finals.

‘Ageless’ Hopkins wins Bernard Hopkins, the oldest world champion in boxing history at age 49, became the eldest fighter to unify world titles when he defeated Beibut Shumenov in a light-heavyweight showdown.

Two judges gave ageless wonder Hopkins a split-decision victory by the same score, 116-111, while the out-voted third saw Shumenov as a 114-113 winner of their Saturday title showdown in Washington. “I had a great night,” Hopkins said. “I’m special. Warriors crash again

Ryan Eggers from the Waimea Club in Nelson was one of the indoor bowlers in Ashburton competing in the South Island Chartered Clubs’ Championships over the Easter weekend.

The tournament has been spread across two venues, the Ashburton MSA and the Ashburton Indoor Bowls Stadium, with singles played on Good Friday, pairs on Saturday, the fours yesterday and the triples will conclude the tournament today.

A high over the Tasman Sea extends a ridge onto most of New Zealand tomorrow, while a northwest flow moves onto Fiordland late in the day ahead of an approaching trough. The trough weakens as it moves north on Wednesday and Thursday, becoming slowmoving over central North Island areas on Thursday.

New Zealand Superbike 250 production champion Bailie Perriton was sporting a new number one on his Kawasaki EX250 at Methven’s Mountain Thunder on Saturday, and he showed why.

The 16-year old took out the junior clubman 250 class, and

got the bragging rights over his father Damian around the tight 1km street circuit.

“I went pretty good and it was all a bit of fun,” Bailie, a fourth year veteran of the street race, said.

As well as finishing runner-up to his son, Damian also had to settle for second in the Pre 89 class behind Philip Mai (Owaka).

Bailie also rode a Suzuki FXR150 in the buckets and improved on last year’s third place, coming in second behind Alastair Hoogenboesum (Christchurch).

“It was a pretty good achievement. We needed a bit more power and the bike was a bit slow, but room for improvement for next year.”

Fellow Ashburton teenager Lewis Dray achieved his goal of a top five finish in the buckets coming in fifth, after a 10th place finish in his maiden race at Methven last year.

Bailie was also in the Formula Methven which was won by Dan McKenzie (Christchurch) with a fourth and two fifth places finishes.

“I was pretty happy with that.

“It’s the toughest racing against all the fastest bikes, so it was just about learning and seeing what that top level is like.”

He now turns his focus back to chasing dual titles with the second round of the Australian FX Superbike series at Mallala, north of Adelaide in May.

EPL clash nailed down for Phoenix

BY MICHAEL BURGESS The Wellington Phoenix will face a Premier League team in July - and there is a possibility of a second English team also visiting these shores.

After protracted negotiations, which began in early 2013, the

Herald on Sunday has learnt that West Ham have confirmed they will visit New Zealand as part of their pre-season preparations. The Hammers are likely to play one game in Wellington, with the possibility of an additional match in Auckland or Dunedin.

The London team will be the first top-flight English side to play in New Zealand since league champions Everton faced Auckland and Canterbury at the end of the 1986-1987 season.

There is also the possibility of a second EPL team - believed to be Newcastle - coming to New

Zealand. If the Magpies visit goes ahead, they would face the Phoenix as well as an Australian team - most likely Sydney FC with both games to be staged in this country.

The matches would represent a significant coup for the Phoenix and New Zealand Football.

Premier League clubs, especially those with long, established reputations, are in demand all over the world.

The super clubs - both Manchester teams, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool - command in excess of $1 million in appearance fees alone.
