Man dies after hit by car
Warning for local drivers
BY ERIN TASKER
ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
An 80-year-old Ashburton man is dead after being hit by a car while walking down State Highway 1 south of Hinds early yesterday morning. Police said the man was struck by a car while walking on the Hinds-Rangitata Highway, about 5km south of Hinds, shortly before 3.15am. According to police, initial inquiries suggested the man had been driving south on the highway before parking his ve-
hicle and continuing south on foot. The man’s car was found parked about 1.5km away and police are asking anyone who may have seen the man or his car – a white Nissan Pulsar – to contact them. It was believed to have been parked in the laneway on the highway. Timaru Police Sergeant Mylen Hamilton said people would have seen the vehicle and police are asking anyone who was travelling on the HindsRangitata Highway near the Hinds township around that
time, who may be able to help with their inquiries, to contact them. The driver of the vehicle which hit the man stopped and has been spoken to by police. Police will not release the dead man’s name until next of kin have been advised. The fatality is the second involving a pedestrian on a rural road in Mid Canterbury in less than two weeks. Two weeks ago today, Danny Mathew Hendriks, 18, from Rakaia, was killed on Acton Road, on the
outskirts of Rakaia. Police later revealed that their investigations had revealed Mr Hendricks was lying on the road when he was hit. Investigations into that incident are continuing and it is not yet known whether charges will be laid. Meanwhile, the death of the man involved in yesterday’s incident will likely be referred to the coroner and anyone with any information is asked to contact Timaru Police on (03) 6879808.
■ ASHBURTON CRASH
Five people injured in two-car crash BY ERIN TASKER

Members of a Marlborough indoor bowls team were among five people injured in a two-car crash in Ashburton yesterday afternoon. The crash occurred on Smallbone Drive at lunchtime and early indications were that a red Holden driven by a local man lost control as he drove into the Riverside Industrial Park and collided with an oncoming silver Honda. The silver car contained four members of a Marlborough indoor bowls team which had been in Ashburton taking part in a South Island chartered clubs indoor bowls tournament. All four people in that car and the sole occupant of the red car were injured and taken to hospital – one by helicopter to Christchurch Hospital and the rest to Ashburton Hospital via ambulance – and three fire engines, two ambulances and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter

A tragic and busy start to the Easter long weekend on Mid Canterbury’s roads has prompted a warning from police on the importance of driving to the conditions. Persistent rain has been causing issues around the country, with surface flooding providing a major headache for motorists heading away for a long weekend break. On Thursday afternoon, the main thoroughfare through Ashburton was steadily busy with traffic often at a stop on West Street, and that continued yesterday. Timaru Police Sergeant Mylen Hamilton said State Highway 1 from Rolleston south was almost at a stand-still yesterday afternoon. “Not for any reason other than people slowing down for the weather,” Mr Hamilton said. According to the New Zealand Transport Agency website there were no road closures in Mid Canterbury but driving around, there was significant surface flooding in parts. Mr Hamilton said motorists needed to take extreme care on the roads with more rain forecast for last night. “If you don’t need to go anywhere, stay at home where it’s warm,” he said. There is an end in sight for the rough weather though, with the MetService forecasting a vast improvement today and tomorrow. Fine weather is forecast through until Monday, but the rain will set in again come Wednesday.

■ METHVEN STREET RACE
In brief Champs abandoned View or purchase photos online guardianonline.co.nz
The weekend’s Fiber Fresh New Zealand Endurance Championships has been abandoned by organisers after sustained flooding at Mayfield and treacherous underfoot conditions. Organisers delayed the start of the three-day event hoping the weather would improve for a start this morning, but it soon became clear the conditions would not improve. A member of the organising committee said the decision was made in the interests of horse welfare and rider safety. Rain had persisted through yesterday morning, with the ride base turned into a sea of mud. Entry fees would be refunded. Organisers are now faced with a massive cleanup, and will be left counting the cost, both financial and in terms of qualification and selection for the upcoming FEI Alltech World Equestrian Games. Personnel from Equestrian Sports New Zealand’s High Performance programme are in discussions with squad riders and selectors.

Flooding call-out Flooding caused problems around the country yesterday but in Ashburton firefighters only had to deal with one flooding call-out. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a Methven Highway address shortly after 10am where flood waters had crept into a basement garage. The water had to be diverted and the Ashburton District Council was called in to assist the property’s owners.

Ashburton’s Bailie Perriton is preparing himself for “slippery” and “scary” conditions today at the Ride Forever Mountain Thunder Motorcycle Street Race. The Methven town centre motorcycle race is scheduled to go ahead wet or fine, and rain over the past few days might see damp conditions remaining on the street despite a forecast of clearing weather. “It will be scary, especially if this weather doesn’t fine up, I’m praying for it to dry up so I don’t have to pack as many undies in a suitcase,” the 16-yearold national bike racing champion said. He will be racing a Suzuki SV650 in the Formula Methven class, the biggest and fastest bike he has ever ridden in a street race, and is expecting to reach speeds of about 150 kilometres per hour. The Ashburton College pupil is no stranger to speed, adrenaline and pain. Last year while racing in Auckland he was knocked off his bike at about 155 kilometres per hour and the resulting injury saw his arm burned to the muscle. In another crash in Timaru last year he injured his wrist, and while riding a bicycle in the Ashburton skatepark when he was 15 he crashed and tore
A troublesome doorbell which just wouldn’t stop ringing prompted a call-out for the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade yesterday morning. The brigade was called to the Winter Street home of an elderly woman at 7.15am yesterday after it’s believed water got into her doorbell, causing it to continuously ring. “We just pretty much pulled it to bits and stopped it from ringing,” Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess said.
Alarm activations The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade attended two alarm activation call-outs yesterday. One was to KFC Ashburton at 3.30am yesterday while the other was to Briscoes shortly after 1am. The alarm activation at Briscoes was believed to have been related to water getting into the system.

Methven for Mountain Thunder, a high profile annual street racing event on the motorcycling calendar. It will be 9.30am to 4pm. Tickets at the gate are $20 each, while those aged 16 and under are free.
A man was attacked while taking a shortcut home on Thursday night, and is now in a serious condition in hospital with a suspected fractured scull. Wellington police were called at 3am by staff at Kenepuru Hospital in regards to a male victim with a serious head injury. It has been established he had been walking home after having dinner at a friend’s house in Worcester Street between 10.30pm and 11.30pm. It appears he took a short cut through Cannons Creek Park where police have since discovered fresh blood. The victim is now in hospital with a suspected fractured skull, and is in a serious condition. - APNZ

■ SWEPT AWAY AT WOOLSHED CREEK
Incredible tale of survival

ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
A French tourist swept away after slipping into a raging Woolshed Creek late on Wednesday was washed over two terrifying waterfalls before clambering out. The woman, originally thought to be German, stunned searchers when she walked into the Woolshed Creek carpark in the Mid Canterbury high country at 7.45pm on Wednesday - almost four hours after the alarm was raised – with only a few bumps and bruises to show for her remarkable ordeal. Methven Search and Rescue’s Don Geddes said the woman was incredibly lucky to be alive; if she had not managed to cling on to rocks and pull herself out of the water at the point she did, she could well have ended up being washed into the South Ashburton River and out to sea. The woman was walking the Mt Somers Walkway with her partner and they were only about 15 minutes from their destination – Woolshed Creek hut – when she slipped into a stream which was raging due to recent rain, and was swept away. “Where it happened, normally you can step across without even getting a splash on your boots,” Mr Geddes said. As the woman was swept away, her partner raced to Woolshed Creek hut where the alarm was raised via mountain radio shortly after 4pm and police, Methven Search and Rescue (SAR) and the alpine search and rescue team were deployed, but hopes were not high of finding her alive. It was cold, dark and they had no idea how far she had been swept downstream. So searchers were amazed by the story
she had to tell when they got her back to their headquarters in Methven. She had been washed over two waterfalls – the first about four metres high and the second about 10 metres high – and into the main Woolshed Creek. “She got churned around in there like she was in a washing machine,” Mr Geddes said. Eventually she managed to grab some rocks and clamber out of the water and make her way back to the track. She was on the wrong side of the creek to go back to the hut, so she walked the estimated two hours – in the dark - back to the walkway’s carpark where searchers stationed there were amazed to see her appear at the end of a bridge. “If she had gone any further (in the water) she would have been flushed right through the canyon,” Mr Geddes said. As it turned out she was only travelled about 350 metres in total after being swept away – the first waterfall was about 150 metres along, and the other another 150 metres along. The woman’s partner was waiting in Woolshed Creek hut while the search was conducted and searchers got word to him via mountain radio that she had been found. Searchers arrived soon after to help bring him out and the couple then had an emotional reunion at the Methven SAR headquarters. Mr Geddes said the woman’s survival was incredible. “When we heard (she was alive) we thought ‘how the hell did she get there?’. There’s no way she could have been flushed through the canyon and survived,” he said.
Thank you to rescuers BY ERIN TASKER
ERIN.T@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
The partner of a French tourist lucky to escape with her life after being swept away in Woolshed Creek says the couple are humbled by the response to their plight. The couple did not wish to be identified, but through police issued a short statement thanking those who helped rescue the 30-year-old woman and those who have helped them since. Searchers were stunned when the woman walked out alive under her own steam on Wednesday night hours after slipping into a stream and being swept away into Woolshed Creek. Her terrifying ordeal saw her washed over two high waterfalls before managing to grab on to rocks and pull herself out at a spot where searchers said, had she gone any further, it’s likely she would not have survived. Incredibly she sustained just a few bumps and bruises, but she was shocked and still coming to terms with her lucky escape. The woman’s husband said the couple wished to thank Methven police and Methven Search and Rescue, as well as the Methven community. He said they were humbled by the response they had received.Methven police constable Aar-
on Tapp said the community had rallied around the couple – The Lodge had offered them accommodation, Methven Lions had given them cash to tide them over, The Salvation Army had given them a food package and The Laundry had cleaned their sodden clothes for them. Mr Tapp said the woman’s tale of survival was incredible. During Wednesday night’s search, searchers were not hopeful; they were expecting to be conducting a recovery, not a rescue. “We expected the worst, to be honest,” Mr Tapp said. He said the woman showed amazing strength during her ordeal and it was incredible she escaped relatively unscathed physically. “She’s a bit sore but they’re just doing a bit of soul searching, going back over things like that,” Mr Tapp said. The woman lost her pack which was carrying her passport and all of her papers, money and cards, as she was swept away and while police are helping her replace her passport and cards, they are hoping the pack may turn up somewhere. Mr Tapp said the pack – a dark colour with a blue rain cover over it - may wash up somewhere and if it did, it could be passed on to Methven police.

■ PUBLIC HOLIDAY SURCHARGE

Warbirds still on Contrary to rumour, yesterday’s Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshow has not been cancelled because of bad weather. Show general manager Ed Taylor expressed to the Otago Daily Times his frustration yesterday at calls he and other show organisers had from people thinking the show had been cancelled. “They are probably sitting up in Greymouth and Christchurch and Dunedin in 80-knot winds and pouring rain and thinking, well Wanaka must be cancelled. They can’t be having good weather.” While there was low cloud at the start of yesterday’s practice day at Wanaka Airport, by mid morning the sun had broken through in places and temperatures were rising. - APNZ
Army exercise They are some of the most fearless warriors in military history. The bravery and exploits of the Gurkhas, who carry the terrifying Kukri knife, are the stuff of legend. The South Island is currently hosting 181 soldiers from 1 Royal Gurkha Regiment for a biennial exercise with the NZ Army. The legendary fighting force has come from the hot and humid jungles of Brunei, where they are based, to near-freezing temperatures at Tekapo Military Camp in the shadow of Mt Cook/ Aoraki. The tussock plains and rocky outcrops set in the backhills above Lake Tekapo provides them with invaluable foreign training conditions. For the next month, the Gurkhas, who form part of the British Army, are doing live-firing exercises, including simulated attacks in small units. They’re also doing sniper training, largerscale platoon attacks, and mortar practice. In miserable conditions, the steely resolve of the Gurkhas was being severely tested. - APNZ
slack on public holidays. Commerce Commission general manager Kate Morrison said Easter Saturday and Sunday were not public holidays, and casual staff may not be covered under the Holidays Act, meaning businesses must not mislead customers if applying a surcharge. She said businesses must provide a truthful reason for surcharges, but it was easy to forget only yesterday and Mon-
day were public holidays. Last year many Ashburton hospitality businesses discarded surcharges during Easter, saying they put customer satisfaction before business costs and it appears to be the same story this year. Ashburton Trust chief executive Giles Beal said the organisation did not impose a surcharge, because it was “about being fair to the customer”.
Kelly’s owner Greg King said he did not open yesterday and also wouldn’t be on Monday because paying staff was a major expense, pointing out adding another 50 per cent in wages for working a public holiday became unviable. Meanwhile, under The Shop Trading Hours Repeal Act, most shops, besides pharmacies, duty-free stores and real estate agencies, must close their doors
on Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Cafes bars and restaurants are also exempt from the law, but can only serve alcohol if it is with food. Staff who usually work public holidays are entitled to a paid day off, but if employees must work, they are entitled to timeand-a-half for hours worked and an alternative holiday if the day is an otherwise working day off for the employee.
■ ST JOSEPH’S SCHOOL

Lending a hand to those in need was the mantra at St Joseph’s School on Thursday. From delivering Meals on Wheels and visiting the elderly to assisting the Salvation Army, it was time for the school’s Year 4 to 8 pupils to give back to a community that has given them so much. Teacher Cathrine Rush went out with 12 youngsters to deliver meals to the homes of many locals in need, as the school focused on the giving and helping aspect of its Lenten service project in the lead-up to the most important weekend on the Christian calendar – Easter. “This week we have had a large focus on what Holy Week is all about and this is just about getting the kids out there to help others,” she said. Mrs Rush said the school raised about $300 from a coin trail in the morning for Caritus New Zealand, a Catholic agency which aims to free the world of poverty and injustice through community development, advocacy, education and emergency relief. The fundraiser was followed by other pupils visiting Park Street Day Care Centre, Rosebank resthome and Cameron Courts Rest Home and Village, as well as working with Forest and Bird and the cleaning of the Ashburton Salvation Army family store. That was then followed by a liturgy at the Holy Name Parish.

■ HAY BALE FIRE
Warning after hay bales catch fire By Erin TaskEr
erin.t@theguardian.co.nz
A second incident of hay bales spontaneously combusting in less than a week has prompted a warning from firefighters. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to a Winslow Westerfield Road
property shortly after 10am on Thursday where hay bales had caught fire. Firefighters did not need to take any action though, with the hay bales pulled apart and simply let to burn. But Ashburton’s principal rural fire officer Don Geddes said
that fire followed a similar fire at a Christy’s Road property a few days earlier and the two were timely reminders for people to check their hay bales. “If people had straw baled where it may not have been fit they might want to check it,” Mr Geddes said.
He said there appeared to have been more incidents of spontaneous combustion this year, compared to others. “And that’s an indication of the season. Some of the straw that’s getting baled perhaps has more moisture in it,” Mr Geddes said.

■ RANGITATA ELECTORATE
More locals lost in re-draw By Sue NewmaN
sue.n@theguardian.co.nz
The Rangitata Electorate has lost a greater than anticipated slice of its population as the New Zealand’s electoral boundaries are signed off. While the draft boundaries signalled the electorate would lose the Rakaia township and a strip of land running from Rakaia to the sea, the final boundary lines carve a much greater swathe through the district.
And that’s disappointed Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew who said she now loses three schools and an additional 900 constituents. “I’m sad about this and I’m disappointed, but I can’t be precious about it,” she said. The new boundary line follows the Rakaia River as far as Highbank and then travels across country to a point near Cairnbrae before heading to State Highway 1 at Dromore. Crossing the highway the boundary travels towards the
coast via Seafield. This means the areas of Highbank, Cairnbrae, Springfield, Lyndhurst, Urrall, Lauriston, Mitcham, Barrhill, Seafield, Pendarves and Rakaia all join the Rakaia and Chertsey townships as part of the Selwyn electorate. “I’ll still be interested in what’s happening in the entire Ashburton District and I don’t believe the new boundaries will make any difference to how marginal my seat will be,” she said. With the Selwyn and Rangi-
tata electorates similar in their rural nature, the change for individuals was unlikely to be significant, they would simply have a new MP, Mrs Goodhew said. When the boundary redraw was signalled in November, Rakaia community association chair Neil Pluck said he was disappointed the Ashburton District could find itself part of two electorates. Ties with areas to the north was nothing new as Rakaia had always considered the area
through to Leeston and Dunsandel had always been philosophically part of Rakaia, he said. The boundary change might have disappointed some people in the Rakaia area, but when submissions were called for there were almost none. There have been no changes to seven South Island electorates: Nelson, Kaikoura, WestCoast Tasman, Dunedin South, Clutha-Southland, Invercargill and Ilam.

■ SMOKEFREE MID CANTERBURY
■ NAPIER DEATH
Support for plain packaging
Man found dead in stormwater drain
BY TONI WILLIAMS
TONI.W@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
Smokefree Mid Canterbury is backing the introduction of plain packaging on tobacco products in New Zealand, saying it will help remove any glamour associated with smoking. The Mid Canterbury group included people and agencies that supported and worked toward the Smokefree New Zealand goal of 2025. Their comments come as a national smokefree coalition addressed the Health Select Committee on Wednesday on proposals to introduce plain packaging of tobacco products in New Zealand. Smokefree Mid Canterbury chairperson Carly McDowell
said plain packaging legislation was one of the most important steps New Zealand could take towards its target of a Smokefree New Zealand by 2025. “Introducing plain packaging will see New Zealand standing shoulder to shoulder with Australia and the UK against Big Tobacco, and will remove the tobacco industry’s last methods of making smoking appear glamorous and sophisticated to our children” said Mrs McDowell. The United Kingdom announced it would introduce standardised plain packaging for cigarettes. Their announcement followed a comprehensive review that found unbranded packs could reduce the number of
children starting to smoke. Hampstead School principal and member of Smokefree Mid Canterbury Coalition, Peter Melrose, was enthused by the UK announcement. “Progress in the UK is good for our New Zealand campaign to introduce plain packaging. “By removing tobacco industry logos, brand imagery and any decorative colours or design, plain packaging makes tobacco products less attractive, especially to children and young people.” “Children and young adults are especially vulnerable to tobacco branding and imagery; they often use it to define their identity”. Mr Melrose said the average age people started to smoke in
New Zealand was 14 years, and even younger for Maori and Pacific children. “As smoking is so addictive, it can be hard to stop. We need to maintain our support for people trying to stop smoking and remain smokefree, but our stop smoking efforts would be further supported by legislation to make health warnings more noticeable on tobacco packaging”. Almost 5000 people nationwide died each year from smoking related illness so Mrs McDowell said it was important to act “any delay will cost lives”. The Smoke-free Environments (Tobacco Plain Packaging) Amendment Bill passed its first reading on February 11, drafting legislation to introduce plain packaging.

BY DOUG LAING Police were last night still trying to establish the movements of an elderly man found dead in an open stormwater drain in Napier. The body was found in the drain between Latham Street and the Marewa Walkway, shortly after police had been told of a scooter in the drain about 10am yesterday. After an investigation during the day the cause was not considered suspicious, police said. A woman walking her dog as the weather cleared after heavy overnight rain is understood to have seen the scooter in the shallow stream down a bank. When Hawke’s Bay Today arrived at the scene, a red scooter could be seen from Latham Street, draped with weed indicating it may have been submerged by stormwater during heavy rain on Thursday night. The body was out of view from the street. It was beyond a bend and less than 50m downstream. Senior Sergeant Clint Adamson, of police Eastern District Command Centre, Napier, said as police secured the area of creek it was being treated as an unexplained death. Scene inquiries were completed by mid-afternoon and the body removed and identified by members of the man’s family. Police had not released the identity of the man last night, although Inspector Andy Sloan, of Hawke’s Bay Police, said he had lived in the vicinity. The man was not understood to have been reported missing before the body was found, but police were contacted later by people who had discovered a relative known to ride his scooter in the area was not at home. Sources said at least two people were in the vicinity on mobility scooters during the rain and after nightfall on Thursday. - APNZ

■ COMMONWEALTH GAMES
Local athletes heading to Glasgow By Jonathan Leask
jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
Mid Canterbury will have two athletes at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July. Cyclist Lauren Ellis and fullbore rifle shooter John Snowden were both named to compete in their second Commonwealth Games after both went to Delhi in 2010 and picked up medals. Snowden will defend his Delhi gold medal in the men’s fullbore pairs with Mike Collings of Te Puke. Ellis won a silver medal in the points race at the velodrome in Delhi and will return to the track in Glasgow hoping for more, having also attended the Ashburton athletes Lauren Ellis and John Snowden are heading to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July.
London Olympics in 2012. Mid Canterbury had four athletes and three officials in Delhi and had a top medal tally with one gold and three silver as Ellis and Snowden were joined by cyclist Hayden Roulston and Black Stick Stacey Carr as medal winners. Roulston took silver in the road race and Carr had to settle for silver after an overtime loss to Australia. Accounting for four of New Zealand’s 34 medals in Delhi meant Mid Canterbury had a better haul than 53 of the countries competing at the Games. With two athletes confirmed the region may not reach such a
dizzy height as 19th on the medal tally, however, there could be more athletes to join Ellis and Snowden in Glasgow. Roulston has hinted towards a return to track cycling as he looks ahead to the Rio Olympics but is a potential candidate for the long list road team by the end of May. Mark Jackman remains a member of Gordon Tietjens’ sevens rugby programme with the Games squad yet to be announced as the All Black sevens team chases a fifth straight gold medal. Outdoor bowler Sandra Keith missed out on selection for the Black Jacks squad.

■ WEATHER WATCH
Sodden South Island mops up after storm The sodden South Island is mopping up after a damaging storm caused flooding and slips across the island. Many residents around Christchurch spent yesterday surveying damage from flooding, yet again. Pigeon Bay resident Pam Richardson, chair of the Akaroa-Wairewa community board, said the area had received a “real hammering” with the weather this year. “It’s obviously been a very miserable time for them. “All around the place we’ve had considerable amounts of rain.” Lyttelton and Banks Peninsula were hit hard. A large slip on Canterbury Street in Lyttelton had caused damage to the area. Greymouth suffered significant damage after winds of 140km/h tore through the district with more bad weather expected. Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn said 60 houses had roofs blown off in the wind overnight on Thursday and more rain was forecast today. “We are in full recovery mode racing against time against the weather. We’ve got an aircraft hangar with planes in it that has been totally demolished and a hall in Greymouth that has been totally demolished,” he said. Mr Kokshoorn said the district would not be declaring
a state of emergency because there was no threat of loss of life. More than 100mm of rain is forecast in Greymouth today and firefighters and the public were racing to secure tarpaulins on houses. “We’ll get there. We’ve had to learn to be resilient, and this is one more time we’ll all just whip together to get us up and running again.” On Thursday night 28 people sheltered in an emergency evacuation centre at the Greymouth Baptist Church, and Mr Kokshoorn said he expected more people to be staying in the centre last night. Nelson police attended 660 weather-related events before 8am on Thursday, including roofs torn from houses and trees blown down. “We certainly got hit by the brunt of it,” Area Commander for Nelson Bays, Inspector Steve Greally said. Blenheim and Kaikoura police attended 17 slips between the two towns, and were still clearing them late yesterday. Neither area had any injuries reported from the storm. Tasman District rivers had been monitored all day and the Baton River, on the west bank of the Motueka Valley, reached its largest flood level on record - estimated to be close to a 50year flood level. - APNZ

■ ASHBURTON COLLEGE
College juniors rock it Hawaiian style Miserable weather may have been on everyone’s lips this week, but that didn’t deter 100 junior Ashburton College pupils from donning Hawaiian shirts and bikini tops on Wednesday night. That’s because it was their
junior dance concert, where (from left) Zoe Smith, Keira Largue and Ailsa Kirkaldie and fellow pupils showed off their moves in what is a highlight on the college’s social calendar. Organised by the college’s recreation and social commit-
tee on the student executive, a college band entertained revellers followed by a stunning DJ performance. The college said the event was hugely popular and strong pupil demand may mean another dance concert is held later in the year.

Ashburton stalwart remembe O
n weekend nights, halls in Ashburton and the surrounding countryside were packed to overflowing as young men and women rocked around the clock. It was the early 1960s – the pubs closed at 6pm and music and dancing ruled the night. “It’s an era that’s gone really,” said 70-year-old Noel Johnson of Ashburton. He was a singer in the fivepiece Ashburton rock and roll band The Sapphires for three years to 1963. They played covers of hits by artists such as Bill Haley and his Comets and Cliff Richards and The Shadows. As well as Mid Canterbury, the band performed in Timaru, Christchurch and Akaroa, and at one time supported the famous comedic and musical Kiwi touring duo Lou and Simon. The Sapphires appeared on the television show New Faces, and competed regularly in a talent quest on Sunday nights run by the Ashburton Silver Band. It began in the Orange Hall, but got too big for that and moved to the Regent. The band would play regularly at half rock and roll half oldtime dances with fellow Ashburton band The Twilighters, at the large town centre Radiant Hall on Saturday nights. They filled the hall with young men and women twisting, jiving, waltzing and doing the Canadian threestep. Alcohol was not allowed, but some of the male attendees would hide bottles of beer in a coal yard across the road, and excuse themselves to pop out for a quick swig. “A lot of them got caught by the cops. The policeman would tip it out in front of them and kick them up the bum.” Men wore suits and ties and women wore dresses, while in ball season it would be dinner suits and long frocks. It was an age when men were chivalrous and women were demure, and men would politely ask women for a dance. Mr Johnson remembered when it came to the last dance, the men would almost run to the woman they wanted to ask to dance as they hurried to beat their rivals. “A lot of romances would have blossomed and bloomed from those days. It was a big meeting place for boys and girls.” Mr Johnson joined The Twilighters in 1964 as bass guitar player and singer. It was the start of a long association of more than 15 years with some of the members. The Twilighters were one of six or seven dance bands in the town, and the bands would also play at country halls such as Winchmore, Alford Forest and Lauriston. “All the locals would come and

have a dance, the ladies would bring a plate,” Mr Johnson remembered. Dances after A&P shows at Ashburton, Methven and Mayfield were always large affairs. The bands were particularly busy during ball season. There was a stock and station agents’ ball, a nurses’ ball, a highland ball and National Party debutante ball. Before he became Prime Minister, MP Robert Muldoon attended the latter one night, and Mr Johnson remembered having a tipple with the politician back stage. While alcohol was not allowed, band members would get away with sneaking in a flagon of beer
inside their drum case. Mr Johnson said the Mayor of Ashburton Darcy Digby introduced him to Mr Muldoon. Mr Johnson remembered Mr

mayor Jock Davidson. That year The Twilighters were engaged as a backing band for the many high-profile acts playing at Timaru’s Caroline Bay carnival.

The same year pub closing changed to 10 o’clock, which altered the social scene as many stayed on in the pubs to drink and no longer went to the dances. The Hotel Ashburton opened in 1969 and The Twilighters would play there every Friday and Saturday night. Dividing walls were drawn back to open up the hotel’s interior, and the area was generally filled to capacity. Everyone had to be out by 10.20pm. On one evening the police raided the hotel for underage drinkers and “got quite a few”, Mr Johnson recalled, which meant not as many were able to turn out for subsequent perfor-
mances. One of Mr Johnson’s highlights was playing at a Twizel Aero Club function, where there was a large and appreciative crowd. “I remember thinking this must be how The Beatles felt,” he said. Mr Johnson rued the passing of the dance band era. An unmarried woman he knew told him she wished she had grown up in those days, as it would have been a great environment to have met men in. Mr Johnson continues with his music today, singing with the MSA Orchestra, and performing at Rosebank Rest Home’s happy hour on Friday afternoons.

■ RUGBY BAN
■ OFFICER ASSAULTED
Banned 78 weeks for stomping
Man, 23, charged over assault
By John hill A Gisborne club rugby player has been banned for 78 weeks for a stomping incident which left an opponent needing 70 stitches to the head. High School Old Boys’ halfback Sione Tamale appeared in front of a Poverty Bay Rugby Football Union judiciary panel on Thursday night after being cited for stomping in a premier
club match at The Oval last Saturday. Tamale was red-carded by referee Royce Maynard and was later cited in a letter from a spectator who witnessed the incident. The victim, Pirates’ lock Niko Brooking-Hodgson, had no recollection of the stomping which left him unconscious and convulsing on the ground. His left ear was nearly ripped
off and he required 70 stitches to the wound. In announcing the decision, judiciary chairman Adam Simperingham told 27-year-old Tamale “we need to send a clear message to you and others”. “You are not eligible to play rugby this year and next, and we hope you learn from this,” Mr Simperingham, a lawyer, said. Union chief executive Doug
Wilcox echoed the sentiments. “It sends a clear message that this type of violent behaviour will not be tolerated.” The rule book (10.4B) stipulates a maximum penalty of 52 weeks. However, Simperingham cited section 87 sub-section 9 involving consequences to the injured player which allows for the suspension to be extended. - APNZ
■ POPPY DAY
Poppies on sale around Ashburton By Caitlin Porter Distinctive red poppies were seen on the lapels of many Ashburton residents on Thursday, marking the annual Poppy Day. Poppy Day has been around since 1922 and is usually held on the Friday before Anzac Day. This year it happened to fall on Good Friday so it was held on Thursday, April 17. The proceeds go to the RSA Poppy Day appeal in support of veterans, ex-service people and their families in need. This year the caravan on East Street was manned by Ayleen Beatty, past president of the women’s section and Colleen Hands, the current president of the women’s section. It remains there only for Poppy Day. Mrs Beatty said she didn’t know where the poppies were made, they were just sent to the RSA in large boxes. When asked how the sales were going Mrs Beatty said, “they haven’t done bad at all”. Last year 8000 poppies were sold over the entire sales period.

By Brendan Manning A 23-year-old man has been charged following the assault of an Auckland police officer early on Thursday. The officer was knocked unconscious while responding to a call about a large group of people fighting in Glen Innes’ Apirana Ave area just after midnight. He suffered a head injury in the assault and was hospitalised. He was expected to make a full recovery. Police yesterday confirmed a 23-year-old man had been charged with aggravated wounding, and is due to appear at Auckland District Court today. Officers investigating the incident established a number of small groups were involved in various fights before the attack on the police officer. Detective Senior Sergeant John Sutton said two other men were interviewed and released, and received formal warnings for fighting. The officer used his police radio to call for help. Two members of the public also came to his aid. “We’re grateful that he was assisted by two members of the public and that police were able to respond quickly to this call for help,” Mr Sutton said. “The welfare of our staff is important to us and we are working to support him, his colleague and all staff in our district. Police should not be subject to any kind of physical violence while in the role of protecting the community.” - APNZ

Christian schools team up Ashburton Christian School’s (ACS) developing relationship with its Timaru counterpart took another major step on Thursday when the schools combined for a day packed full of activities. About 90 ACS pupils were bused to Timaru Christian School to compete in dance competitions, sporting events, quizzes and crafts activities. ACS principal, Tim Kuipers, said it was an ideal way to round off term one before Easter, but it was also an opportunity to strengthen ties with the school that came to visit them two years ago. He said the school had further plans to form strong relationships with other schools in the district.

■ QUEENSLAND PEST
Fruit fly search to wrap up The search for more Queensland fruit flies will be wrapped up by tomorrow providing no more of the pests are found in Whangarei, Ministry for Primary Industries says. A response by the ministry was put in place following the detection of one of the fruit flies in a surveillance trap in the suburb of Parihaka on April 1. The Queensland fruit fly is a significant pest of many horticultural crops and home gardens. Ministry chief operations officer Andrew Coleman said they remained on alert for the possibility there could be a last-minute detection of further flies.
“The response team will swing into action, should this be the case. “However, we hope to be able to publicly notify the community on Sunday morning that we have had the all-clear and the Controlled Area Notice is revoked and people can go about their business as usual.” The ministry was cautiously optimistic the trapped fly was a single detection, Mr Coleman said. There have been four previous Queensland fruit fly trap detections in the country and in all cases no breeding population of the flies was found. - APNZ

Easter not all eggs and I
t appears that in Ashburton, Easter means many things to many people. Easter is a Christian festival or holiday, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after his crucifixion at Calvary. It is the single most important holiday on the Christian calendar. To some though, the long weekend is seen as a chance to relax and get away. Unless of course, you’re lucky enough to have to work. However, it does appear that the importance of Easter still resonates with kids in the Ashburton community, which may surprise some who think that religion is only held dear by those who are a little older. St David’s Union Church youth leader Judith Penney said that the kids in the youth group were gearing up for the upcoming Easter camp this weekend at Lindisfarne Camp. “We get them thinking about the celebration rather than the holidays,” she said. “The theme for this year’s Easter camp is ‘life is defined by the choices you make’. They are so keen on camp.” Camp started at 8pm on Thursday night and will end on Monday. Youth group numbers at St David’s Union Church are still relatively high. “We are having great numbers in our youth groups, three kids brought friends along on Sunday,” said Judith. “We have been focusing on families that don’t come to church regularly. We do have a lot of kids from an ‘unchurched’ families. “The kids are fantastic.” Marion Brown Te Matapuna Girl Guide leader and Ashburton Eastern district co-ordinator said that her district does not solely focus on Easter as a religious holiday. “The Te Matapuna Girl Guides (formerly St Joseph’s) may have more girls who are from a Christian background, as that is where many St Joseph’s schoolgirls go.” Marion did say that the Tinwald Pippins and Brownies definitely knew that Jesus died and rose again, but they didn’t focus on that. Instead they made Easter bonnets and Easter eggs and went a little into the history of the bonnet and the egg. Ashburton is very much a multicultural society, Mrs
Student reporter at the Ashburton Guardian, Caitlin Porter, talked to people in the Ashburton community about what Easter means to them and whether they still think of Easter in a religious context or merely as a long weekend.

Brown said, and many children had very different beliefs. “At guides we can’t alter how the girls are brought up and we don’t intend to.” Elaine Vallender, Ranger leader and Western District co-ordinator, seconded this and said that “as an organisation,
while we are values based, we are not just Christian; around the world we cover all religions”. The Rangers have not been doing anything specifically related to Easter at all, Mrs Vallender said. “The Rangers are more
focused on a couple of national campaigns at the moment. One is a world one, Together we can change the world, which looks at issues such as poverty etc and we are also working on a Stopping Violence campaign as well. So they are two big focuses for us right now, rather
than religion.” Mid Canterbury Catholic Priest, Father Geoff Gray, said that at Easter the turn-outs for services were very good. “Lots of people who only go to church a few times a year do try to go at Christmas and Easter, especially to celebrate

holidays in Ashburton
this mystery central to the Christian faith.” “For Christians Easter is the high point of the annual celebration of the Christian faith because we remember, as Jesus asked us to, his suffering, death and rising from the dead which is what is called the Paschal Mystery,” Father Gray said. “Easter is a time for all of humanity to rejoice because God has overcome evil in and through the death and resurrection of his son. “We get families, young ones, teenagers, the whole gamut (at Easter),” Father Gray said. This may be true, but Ashburton residents are rather divided over what they will be doing this long weekend. One Ashburton resident said that she would be partaking in church services this weekend and was looking forward to hot cross buns. She also added that she thinks the disasters have brought people together and perhaps people have turned to their faith for guidance. A young Ashburton resident said that she will not be partaking in any Easter services and will be staying inside most of the weekend. Howard Mahere, owner of Lolly Mania in the Ashburton Arcade, said: “Easter is not something I take lightly. It is a holiday I enjoy and as a Christian it means a lot to me.” He also has a sign out the front of his shop outlining the important events that took place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Susi Wood, a resident in Methven but originally from Europe, said the traditions in Europe were quite different to here and chocolate Easter eggs weren’t a huge thing, however her family may be having some chocolate bunnies which her threeyear-old daughter Frida seemed very excited about. “We will be having an Easter egg hunt with real eggs, which we will paint,” Susi said. It seems that while many Ashburton people will be enjoying their long weekend there are still many who think of Easter as a religious time of remembrance and celebration.

500g skinned, boned chicken breast, diced 1/2 tin of Homebrand apricot halves drained, chopped into quarters 125g Greek yoghurt 1T curry powder dash Worcestershire sauce 1 garlic clove, crushed 10g slivered almonds 2T fresh coriander, finely chopped 250g steamed green beans Salt and pepper to taste steamed rice to serve ■ Take the chicken pieces and apricot quarters and thread onto skewers, with apricot in between the chicken. ■ Place yoghurt, curry powder, Worcestershire sauce, garlic into a bowl and mix well. Divide the mixture into two portions and place one portion in the fridge until ready to serve. ■ Place the chicken and apricot kebabs in a dish and pour over the
second portion of yoghurt marinade, rolling the kebabs so they are completely covered. Cover and place in the fridge to marinate for about an hour. ■ Heat a small frying pan to medium heat and toast the almond slivers until they are fragrant. Keep moving them around in the pan so they toast evenly. This will only take 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside. ■ Preheat a griddle pan or BBQ to 200°C and cook the chicken kebabs for 10 minutes, then turn and cook for a further 10 minutes. ■ Garnish with toasted almonds and coriander and serve with the remaining yoghurt mixture on the side with steamed green beans and rice.

In brief Dogs bite Souths Trent Hodkinson’s 78th-minute field goal has sealed a 15-14 victory for Canterbury over a patched-up South Sydney in a stirring Good Friday NRL encounter at ANZ Stadium. It is the third week in a row the Bulldogs have won a game through a field goal and by a single point, with Hodkinson repeating his heroics from last week’s win over the Warriors. The former Manly halfback’s kick from 30 metres capped a superb fightback for Des Hasler’s side, who trailed 14-6 in the second half. - AAP
Panthers release Grant South Sydney appear to have locked in a replacement for rugby union-bound Sam Burgess, with Penrith prop Tim Grant to join the Rabbitohs next season. The Panthers yesterday agreed to release Grant from the final two years of his contract to link up with the Redfern-based NRL club on a four-year deal from 2015. He will, however, see out the remainder of the season with the Panthers. The 26-yearold has played 114 first-grade games for the Panthers since his debut in 2007, as well as two State of Origin appearances for NSW. - AAP
Roosters rally round Sydney Roosters have rallied around out-of-sorts playmaker James Maloney as the NRL premiers seek to break an unprecedented three-match losing streak under coach Trent Robinson. After six rounds the Roosters have slumped to 2-4 and sit 11th on the premiership ladder. Maloney has borne the brunt for the tricolours’ earlyseason woes with NSW coach Laurie Daley challenging him to lift his game. But Roosters prop Sam Moa says Maloney isn’t solely to blame for the Roosters’ poor start to their title defence ahead of their match against Cronulla at Remondis Stadium tonight. The Kiwi international says the Roosters’ forwards need to improve their efforts too. - AAP
Dugan finding form St George Illawarra fullback Josh Dugan admits he’s at least two or three games from hitting his best form following his return from a knee injury. The former Canberra star is yet to be on the winning side since recovering from the medial ligament problem that sidelined him for the opening five rounds of the campaign. Although the Dragons lost to South Sydney in Dugan’s first game back they were much improved in their controversial defeat to Melbourne last Monday. Dugan struggled in the first half at AAMI Park and made a huge mistake that led to a Will Chambers try when he misjudged a bouncing ball. But after halftime he showed in patches just why NSW coach Laurie Daley rates him so highly as the Dragons were cruelly denied a first win in the Victorian capital in 15 years when the Storm scored after the fulltime siren. - AAP

■ HARNESS RACING
Ashburton trial disappoints By Sue NewmaN The Ashburton Trotting Club staff say they’ve been unfairly criticised by harness racing trainer Paul Court, who says a run at this week’s trials hampered his horse, Terror to Love’s, chances in today’s Easter Cup. Terror to Love was entered in a C3-C0 class trial run on Tuesday at Ashburton, and was the stand-out star in a six horse field. Two of the runners were rated C3, two C4 and one, Smiling Star, C7. He was the only open class horse in the field. Court told the New Zealand Herald that the trial was a joke because four of the runners scratched before the race, leaving just the New Zealand Cup champion and Smiling Star in the field. Trotting club staff say they gave the trainers of the remaining two runners the option of joining another trial, but both opted to run in their scheduled race. Court told the Herald he was looking for a solid workout to prepare Terror to Love for a clash with Adore Me at Addington, but instead got a dawdle around the Ashburton track.

“It was disappointing; I think it has affected our chances,” he said. He was quick to add, however, that the pacer had not performed below expectations in the trial day run, but had gone round in 3:7 when Court was hoping to
have a 3:1 hit out ahead of today’s big race. That, he said, was rather frustrating. The horse has not raced for 43 days coming into the Easter Cup, but has an impressive record of coming back fresh, log-
ging four wins from five starts fresh up. Terror to Love lines up against Adore Me and Arden Rooney, Jivin Cullen, Donegal’s Guest and Pemberton Shard in the cup at 9pm tonight at Addington Raceway.

Henry thought career was over By michael BrowN As Ben Henry lay on the ground, with the medicos assessing his injured knee, the lectures he listened to when in the under-20s about the average length of an NRL career came flooding back to him. Three years, he was told, as he was also encouraged to plan for life without football. Henry thought he had reached that place. Last month the 22-year-old re-injured the knee he had spent nine months rehabilitating after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament. He feared the worst. So did the doctors. “I wasn’t in a good place,” he recalls. “I was thinking of all the time I had put into my knee trying to get it right. “I thought about my career as a footy player and how long I was going to last. I was told in these under-20s camps that the average lifespan of a footy player is three years. “I’m just glad I’m right here
at the moment and ready to play against the Dragons on Saturday.” A scan revealed Henry hadn’t, in fact, re-torn his ACL and instead suffered cartilage damage. Initial reports predicted he would be sidelined for eight weeks but the utility will start on the interchange bench against the Dragons. It’s good timing with Ben Matulino and Sione Lousi suspended and Sebastine Ikahihifo injured. “We have been pretty conservative with Ben and he’s been training pretty well the last couple of weeks,” interim coach Andrew McFadden said. “He’s done a fair bit of contact. He’s come to me and said he’s ready.” The mental battle is often more demanding than the physical one for injured players. Just ask the luckless Jerome Ropati, who’s played just 18 NRL games in the last three-and-a-half years and is now recovering from a broken jaw.
Ben Henry: Happy to be back.
“Me and J are really good friends and I talk to him a lot,” Henry says. “He’s a big advocate of having to put your head down and trying to push your way in. “The NRL is a hard competition. It’s funny now when I watch NRL games I just look at people’s knees to see the amount of stress players put them through.” Henry is an intelligent individual who is being talked about as a future Warriors captain. He’s also smart enough to prepare for the future and last year took courses in business and speech.
His immediate focus is the Dragons game. McFadden has said they wanted to use Henry sparingly to ensure they didn’t put too much pressure on but he also needs to be ready to play the majority of the game if required. His natural position is in the second-row but he can equally slot into the middle as a backrower and it would allow Simon Mannering to return to the edges. His biggest quality, however, is the way he plays the game and it’s exactly what the Warriors need right now. “Effort. That’s what I can add to the team,” he says. “When you see one of the boys make a big play, like a try-saving tackle, it’s contagious. “I want to do that. “Collectively we need to be like that against the Dragons to win. “That’s what Cappy (McFadden) is trying to introduce, telling us to toughen up. I think it’s good for us.” - APNZ

In brief
Lauren back on track By Jonathan Leask
jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
Hinds cyclist Lauren Ellis is happy her exile from international track racing is over after being named to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in July. “It’s really exciting. It has been quite the quiet couple of years so definitely looking forward to racing internationally again,” Ellis said. After the 2012 London Olympics BikeNZ tightened the purse strings as they planned ahead for the Rio Olympics, with the women being the biggest causalities essentially cut from the international track programme. Their time out in the cold is over, however, Ellis and London team-mate Jaime Nielsen were the only women named in the initial 14-strong track team, with others to be added later. BikeNZ High Performance Director Mark Elliott explained that the women’s programme is in its rebuild phase two years out to Rio. “We are looking to invest in some talented younger riders and want more from some of our more experienced riders,” Elliott said. “We’ve only selected two women so far but we have others that we would like to consider for Glasgow subject to some further performances expectations over the next two months.” Elliott also said it was likely that some endurance riders, both men and women, will also crossover to the road race to support the key professional riders.
At Delhi Ellis won silver in the points race, and although nothing had been decided officially she believed the points race would again be a focus but she was also a proven performer on the roads in 2013 when the women were not required for international track duties. “I haven’t spoken to anyone about it but I imagine if I did get the opportunity it would be to assist someone else. “I don’t know if I would be able to go the full distance but I’d be a good workhorse for someone else. “If they want me to I would definitely put my hand up.” Her primary focus will be the track, which in the games schedule is in the first few days with the road race and time trials held at the end. Adding to Ellis’ motivation will have been watching the men’s success. The World Champion team sprint trio of Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins, who won the team sprint gold medal at the recent UCI World Championships in Cali, will chase Commonwealth gold after they won the silver medal behind Australia at Delhi in 2010. The other medallists from the world championships Simon van Velthooven, Tom Scully and Marc Ryan (Timaru) – have also been included. The team is experienced with only one rider, 22-yearold Patrick Bevin, who has not competed in either the world championships this year or the London Olympics, but is also young, with an average age of less than 24 years, as they
look towards building success at G l a s gow to build towards the Rio Olympics and beyond. T h e y will have a tough target after the team won nine medals on the track in Delhi, their equal highest medal haul in a C o m m o n we a l t h Games.

John Snowden has known for a year, but the official confirmation finally came on Thursday that he will defend his Commonwealth Games gold medal in Glasgow. Delhi gold medallists Snowden and Te Puke’s Mike Collings have been selected for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games as part of a nine-strong team, where they will defend their title in the men’s full-bore pairs rifle, and compete individually as well. Snowden had cemented his Games qualification in April last year, when he won the games qualification series with Collings the runner-up, but had
to wait almost a year for the official seal of approval. “Even though we had done everything in terms of qualifying we still had to convince the New Zealand Olympic committee that we were capable of a top six finish which is part of the criteria, Snowden said. “We had been carrying on with planning anyway and just waiting for the confirmation. “We were 99 per cent sure and don’t really know why it took so long but it’s done now.” In the end it was worth the wait, and they can now kick the planning up a gear. The defending Commonwealth champions pair are aiming for another medal performance, and both are a chance to

Manchester City are paying their players higher wages than any club in world sport, as doubts emerged about their ability to comply with Uefa’s financial fair play system. The fifth annual Global Sports Salaries Survey revealed that City pay an average player around £5.3m ($NZ10.3m) a year, or £102,000 ($NZ198,600) a week; more than any US baseball or basketball team. The data, produced by the Sportingintelligence website for ESPN, emerged as the process to examine whether City do comply with FFP started at Uefa’s headquarters. - IDP

Bayern Munich need a convincing win at Bundesliga bottom side Eintracht Braunschweig overnight to dismiss talk of a mini-crisis ahead of their Champions League semifinal at Real Madrid. In brief Running with the Bulls Defiant til the end, the NSW Waratahs are pledging to run with the Bulls come what may in tonight’s high-stakes Super Rugby showdown in Sydney. The Tahs’ daring ball-in-hand-style may be putting bums back on seats at Allianz Stadium but it has only yielded four wins from seven outings, leaving the earlyseason title favourites clinging to the top six. A loss to the Bulls would allow the South Africans to leapfrog the Waratahs on the ladder and leave Michael Cheika’s side precariously placed at the halfway point of the competition. Skipper Dave Dennis insists the Waratahs will live and die by their refreshing style and won’t be drawn into a dour struggle with the heavyweight Bulls. - AAP
McCartney off to Ireland Blues’ hooker Tom McCartney has signed a three-year deal with Irish Pro12 side Connacht and will join his former Auckland and Blues’ coach Pat Lam in Galway at the conclusion of the ITM Cup. McCartney, 28, has been a consistent performer for the Blues since making his Super Rugby debut in 2008, going on to earn 64 caps for the franchise. “I’ve loved being at the Blues, it’s been my life for the last seven years but your career doesn’t last forever,” McCartney said. - APNZ
Hickey eyes U20 spot Super Rugby’s break for the June tests comes at an opportune time for Blues’ first-five Simon Hickey. Hickey, who has gone from the franchise’s wider training group to vying with Chris Noakes for the No10 jersey, is available for the New Zealand Under20s team who will contest the Junior World Cup in about six weeks’ time. After representing the under-20s in France last year, a tournament which ended in another disappointment when they lost to England in the semi-finals, Hickey is keen to win back the cup which was New Zealand’s between 2008-2011. This year’s tournament starts on June 2, with the final to be held at Eden Park on June 20. - APNZ
Frustration for Schmidt Amid the euphoria of winning the Six Nations, Ireland coach Joe Schmidt felt frustrated. Long after Ireland squeezed past France in a nerve-jangling duel in Paris, many of their supporters celebrated until their gills resembled the colour of the national jersey. Jubilation embraced the nation as Schmidt, his coaching group and the squad received tumultuous plaudits. Expressions of gratitude were lumped on the squad, yet in the aftermath Schmidt felt an exasperation he had not experienced before. It was rammed home when he received a parcel in the post containing a team jersey and a supporter’s request for autographs. “I couldn’t do anything about it because I’m not going to get my hands on the team again until June,” he said. “The Six Nations is a succession of finals. It is a really challenging learning curve and I don’t think I am too far along it yet.” - NZH

Perry back for Chiefs clash By Jonathan Leask
jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
While his Crusaders team-mates claimed two scalps in South Africa, Tim Perry was doing some hunting of his own. Pig hunting isn’t the recognised way to recover from a hamstring strain, but it, in conjunction with more regulation methods, has done the trick with the former Mid Canterbury prop with Perry back on the Crusaders bench in their rematch with the Chiefs in Hamilton tonight. Perry missed the Crusaders’ twowin tour to South Africa, coach Todd Blackadder’s first clean sweep as a coach in South Africa, after pulling his hamstring prior to the loss to the Hurricanes. But he didn’t just sit out the three weeks, with plenty of rehabilitation, training and some time for tracking tusked hogs. “In the first week it was a bit tender but then after that I was walking around all right. “I still had training sessions and gym sessions and a few days off. So I have still been doing four days a week but it left a bit of time to do what you like.” And for Perry that’s pig hunting. However, tonight he will help the Crusaders hunt out a third straight win when they take on the defending champion Chiefs in Hamilton. “The boys are feeling pretty good and just want to try to get another win but it will be hard work. “It’s a big game, but everyone looks forward to playing them and steps up for the challenge.” Perry comes onto the bench, while Blackadder has made three changes to his starting fifteen. In the forwards, props Owen Franks

and Nepo Laulala have switched places again, with Franks to start in the number 3 jersey and Laulala takes a place on the bench beside Perry pushing Daniel Lienert-Brown out of the 23. Jordan Taufua will run out in the starting fifteen for the first time this season, having been promoted from the reserves to the blindside in place of George Whitelock, with Luke Whitelock to provide cover from the bench. In the backline Tom Taylor also moves into the starting fifteen, playing at centre this week for the injured Kieron Fonotia, after the Perry’s Tasman team-mate strained his hamstring. The Chiefs have made six changes to the starting side to play the Crusaders, while lock Brodie Retallick has been cleared of concussion to play. Liam Messam returns and will be joined by Tanerau Latimer, playing his 100th game for the franchise, and
Liam Squire in the No 8 jersey. Tawera Kerr-Barlow starts at halfback and winger Asaeli Tikoirotuma returns after two weeks out with a knee injury. Pauliasi Manu starts at prop. Four changes have been made to the bench with Jamie Mackintosh, Sam Cane, Matt Symons and Augustine Pulu all added to the reserves. Crusaders: Wyatt Crockett, Corey Flynn, Owen Franks, Dominic Bird, Samuel Whitelock, Jordan Taufua , Matt Todd, Kieran Read (C), Willi Heinz, Colin Slade, Nemani Nadolo, Ryan Crotty, Tom Taylor, Johnny McNicholl, Israel Dagg. The curious case of Benji By Patrick Mckendry When the Blues look back on their Benji Marshall experiment, regardless of how it turns it, they might want to take note of the lessons learned, because there will be many. His switch from league to union has been more difficult than he could have imagined. Frustrations are beginning to surface. There are rumours about a move to Super League, denied by the Blues. The franchise, though, has to take some responsibility for how things have turned out.
A former high-profile league player, albeit one reaching the end of his NRL career, was never going to take kindly to being a bit-part act anywhere, but could the franchise have made it easier for him? His reasons for making the switch were admirable - he wanted to have a crack at the All Blacks. The Blues, too, showed ambition in negotiating his contract with the help of a third-party deal, a package thought to be in the region of $500,000 a year - much less than what he was used to. Along the way, though, there has been a series of odd decisions, all of which
have been made by the Blues or land Rugby Union, including: Chasing Beauden Barrett at s Imagine you’re Barrett, a 22-y starting to make your name wit Blacks. to get better at rugby. It is clear he should have played for Auckland in the ITM Cup. It would have helped with his fitness but more importantly his game sense. Remember, the Blues saw him when he arrived as a first-five. A first-five only, then a fullback Coach John Kirwan was adamant that Marshall was a first-five only, until a 15-minute cameo at fullback in the team’s final pre-season match against the Chiefs in Rotorua appeared to change everything. From then the message was Marshall would be considered at both No10 and No15. Now, eight games into
the season, he covers first-five at a pinch but is concentrating on fullback, where the team is ably served by one Charles Piutau, the Blues’ most penetrative back. Why Waiheke? Marshall has only now been officially assigned a club - Waiheke, a club which plays in first grade, effectively the third tier of Auckland club rugby. Why wasn’t he assigned a club which plays at the top level and why didn’t he play during the Blues’ bye last weekend? It is understood that he might be loaned to another club during the June test break in order to play at a higher level. Very odd.
SOS for Ihaia West Baden Kerr’s hand injury was unfortunate for the player, but in Simon Hickey, Chris Noakes and Benji Marshall the Blues surely have enough cover at No10. Why then did they feel the need to bring in Ihaia West, a 22-year-old Hawkes Bay player with a good running game but not considered good enough to earn a Super Rugby contract? Franchises can only bring in a replacement if they have two injuries in that position or if they designate it as a ‘problem’ area. Hardly a vote of confidence, is it?. - APNZ

Rakaia eye up early cup semi spot Rakaia can lock in a Watters Cup semi-final spot against a Hampstead side that hasn’t had one since 2009, in the Combined Country Cup match that doubles as a Watters Cup clash today. In their third Watters Cup clash Rakaia can all but sew up a semi-final spot for July with a win, while Hampstead start their campaign to break into the top four after missing out on the semi-finals in the past four seasons. Rakaia, who had a bonus point win over Southern and a draw with Methven to sit on top of the Watters Cup standings, come off a bye that gave their long list of walking wounded time to heal and put the Max Gilbert Challenge Trophy on the line again. Hampstead held the trophy briefly last season, but will need to find an 80 minute performance, or close to it, if they are to be a chance of taking it off Rakaia. The adage “a game of two halves” sums up Hampstead’s two outings in the combined competition so far. Hampstead conceded 31 unanswered points in the second half of their game against Ashley, and then went the opening 40 minutes against Darfield without scoring a point in an eventual 10-7 loss after producing a spirited comeback in the second half. Hampstead were hammered 57-5 last year by the eventual Watters Cup champions, and the Jekyll and Hyde side will be hoping their first local derby brings out their best.

By DanieL RichaRDson Winning on the road continues to be a problem for the Blues. Sir John Kirwan’s side haven’t tasted success away from the comforts of home in 12 matches as the Hurricanes put the Blues’ road losing streak out to an even dozen at Westpac Stadium last night. There were no shortage of talking points from the 39-20 defeat, which saw the Hurricanes pick up their thirdstraight victory with controversial officiating, some blockbusting play and an injury to Blues first-five Chris Noakes sticking out. The Hurricanes were denied two tries in the opening spell, but were given one back in the second 40 minutes when a Cory Jane forward pass went undetected by TMO Chris Wratt. On the stroke of halftime, referee Nick Briant also found enough fault in a Hurricanes’ scrum to award the Blues a penalty try, which added to a head-scratching contest. The blockbusting play was provided largely by the Hurricanes, who seemed keen to run the ball from all corners and when you have Julian Savea on your team why wouldn’t you? Then there was Noakes. After a spell of club rugby and development team work, Noakes was given the start ahead of Simon Hickey in the capital but left the field late in the first half after he copped a hefty hit from Beauden Barrett. The departure of Noakes saw the struggling Benji Marshall get an opportunity to run the cutter but as his education in rugby union continues to move along at a slow pace he failed to set the game alight. Despite the Hurricanes’ early dominance, the Blues took a 1713 lead to the break courtesy of their fortuitous penalty try, which came after Dane Coles had been sin-binned for giving away a cynical penalty. The Hurricanes began the second spell a man down but that didn’t bother the home side as Savea took a slick inside ball to bounce over the line as Mark Hammett’s side retained the lead. Later efforts to TJ Perenara and Conrad Smith saw the Hurricanes grab a vital bonus point, which could prove useful considering the congested nature of the points table. For the Blues it was another frustrating outing as they failed to gain any real traction in the contest. - APNZ

It had already been a wet start to the Combined Country Cup rugby competition, but conditions were at their worst for the Easter weekend games on Thursday night. Celtic made it three wins in a row to start the competition as they beat Glenmark 20-6 at home. Celtic coach Warren Mackenzie said it was a “pleasing win” in the “some of the worst conditions” he had experienced. Flanker Will Hintz scored a first half double, and a Gasolo Salima penalty had the hosts up 13-6 at the break, while a Dan Hurley try, converted by Salima, was the only scoring action in the second stanza.
For a second week Celtic only came away with three tries to miss out on a bonus point. “Had we used the ball a bit better on a couple of occasions we could have got across the line, but for the conditions we were pleased enough with the win.” Southern secured a second bonus point in as many weeks, but not the one they were after as they slumped to a third straight defeat after they were edged out by West Melton 8-10. “It was an action replay of last week against Lincoln, and just as frustrating again,” Southern coach Jason Rickard said. An opening try to Logan Bonnington was quickly matched by the hosts’ converted try for a 5-7 halftime score.
Kyle Brown put Southern ahead with a penalty early in the second half. Southern held the 8-7 led right up until the 76th minute when West Melton kicked a penalty to take a one point lead, and they held on for the win. Also in section two Lincoln and Waihora were unbeaten heading into their clash and Lincoln emerged still unbeaten after a 20-11 victory. Ohoka were bettered by Bur nham-Dunsandel-Irwell 15-5 and Saracens had the bye. Over in section one Methven had to hold on for a 10-9 away win over Darfield. After conceding an early penalty Methven went ahead with a try to Davey Maw which was converted by his brother
Daniel, before an injury stoppage midway through the half for what was the first of two broken legs for Darfield in the match. In the second half a Daniel Maw penalty made it 10-3, before Darfield came back hard with a concerted effort but could only settle for two penalties in the face of some stubborn defence from the visitors. Elsewhere defending champions Southbridge were down 5-6 at half time to Prebbleton, before they scored 38 unanswered points in the second half for a third straight bonus point win. Oxford lost at home to Kaiapoi 7-19, Ashley are on the bye this weekend, while Hampstead and Rakaia meet today.

Early crunch match for S15 contenders
W
ith a record of three losses and four wins, tonight’s game in Hamilton against the defending Super rugby champion Chiefs side isn’t exactly doe-or-die time for the Crusaders - but its close. As everybody from every franchise is happy to keep pointing out, there are no easy games in this competition. The Crusaders have a bye next week to get all their injury niggles in order, then they have to take a very deep breath and launch into games against the
Brumbies, Reds, Sharks, Highlanders, and then The Honeybadger’s Force. No easy games. But first tonight. The Chiefs have turned into the Crusaders’ major stumbling block on the way to a return to former glory, knocking the red and blacks out of contention in the last two semi-finals. On paper, it would appear that tonight would be one of the better chances to get one over the old foe, with the Crusaders finishing like a steam train over the Cheetahs last week (thank
Steve Devereux MY SHOUT
you Colin Slade, welcome back!), and the Chiefs having a bit of a stutter in their form line, with only one win in their last four outings. Of course that’s a misleading stat; two of those non-wins were come-from-behind draws, in South Africa no less, after
giving their opponents massive starts, games that would leave any coach with the dilemma of whether to be the angel of darkness or the upbeat cheerleader in the shed after the game. And the Chiefs have Tanerau Latimer marking up a century, a landmark that tends to get team-mates in the right frame of mind for a big match. There’s a long way to go in the Super 15, with many more crunch matches to come, but for both teams tonight, this one will be drawing a serious line in the sand.

Alonso sets the pace View or purchase photos online guardianonline.co.nz
Australian Daniel Ricciardo was third-fastest in yesterday’s initial practice session for the Chinese Formula One grand prix as Fernando Alonso brought some welcome cheer to Ferrari after a troubled week. Alonso was quickest around the Shanghai circuit, clocking one minute 39.783 seconds, with championship leader Nico Rosberg in a Mercedes second some 0.398s behind, and Red Bull’s Ricciardo third, 0.989s behind the Ferrari. While Alonso was fastest, it was a mixed morning for the Italian giants and their new team principal Marco Mattiacci, who was installed after Stefano Domenicali dramatically quit on Monday, as Kimi Raikkonen was unable to complete a timed lap after mechanical problems. - AP

Full throttle, wet or fine By Jonathan Leask
jonathan.l@theguardian.co.nz
Wet or fine, the Mountain Thunder will still roar in Methven today, and Ashburton’s Lewis Dray won’t be holding back. After constant rain over the last few days Methven’s Mountain Thunder Motorcycle Street Race Event could be graced with sunshine today,
however the street circuit could still be slippery. “The forecast isn’t too bad and either way we’ve got the tyres there,” Dray said. “I suppose it is still full throttle. “Obviously you go a little bit easier in the wet, but I still want to push it for a top three finish in each race.” Dray will ride in the F4 Buck-
ets, where he finished 10th in his debut at the event last year. “It’s what I rode last year, and I want improve on my top 10 finishes so try for a top five.” Dray has had a good season on the bike, his fourth, taking his first chequered flag at national level when he took out the opening race of the development class in the New Zealand Superbike series, run at
Levels Raceway in Timaru in January. Dray also won the second race as he went on to lead the standings after the two South island rounds, but he didn’t travel to the two North Island rounds. With that form under his belt he is hoping his second ride in the Mountain Thunder features some lightning laps.
Supercars ditch new restart procedure V8 Supercars’ controversial new restart rules have been scrapped in favour of a return to last year’s format. The post-safety car rolling restart was heavily criticised after its first run of the season at Adelaide’s Clipsal 500 resulted in a spectacular crash involving Holden veteran Jason Bright. The rules forced cars to run in single file and stay under 60km/h until the race leader chose to hit top speed within an allocated acceleration zone (AZ). Organisers later amended the rules to increase the speed limit to 80km/h and lengthen the AZ. But the format has now been ditched altogether, with driv-
ers to revert to the 2013 procedure from next weekend’s Auckland 500. While cars will still need to form a single line behind the race leader, they will be free to accelerate whenever they like once the safety car returns to pit lane. Bright welcomed the call. “The intent was right in terms of adding to the entertainment but in practice it gave guys an advantage they may not have normally had and caused unnecessary problems,” he said. “V8 Supercars did a good job in consulting the drivers to try to make it work for the right reasons, but unfortunately this time it didn’t turn out. “It’s the right call to go back
to what we had before. That system is the fairest for the guys who have fought to build an advantage and gives them the best opportunity to maintain that advantage.” Fellow driver and V8 Supercars Commission member Todd Kelly said the AZ restart area was difficult to manage from behind the wheel. “It is a shame though, when it did work it looked great with the cars spreading either side of the queue on the jump,” Kelly said. “The problem was more often than not there will be someone that doesn’t get the jump causing the car behind to brake and, in turn, cause issues.” - AAP Jason Bright’s crash at the Clipsal.
The Mystics insist recalled veteran Temepara Bailey is only a shortterm fix to the side’s midcourt mayhem, leaving a serious question mark over the team’s mediumterm prospects. Bailey was a shock inclusion in the Mystics line-up for last weekend’s clash against the Tactix, with the Silver Fern midcourt legend answering a late SOS call for her injury-hit former side. She will suit up for them again in tomorrow night’s round eight match-up against the Magic in Hamilton, with the ANZ Championship office approving Bailey as a two-week replacement player. Mystics coach Debbie Fuller said Bailey was brought into the side to cover for Erikana Pedersen, who was ruled out for two weeks with a knee injury. Barring any further injury set-backs, Fuller said there are no plans for Bailey to stay on with the team beyond this weekend. - NZH
Support for festival It’s a busy time for hockey, on and off the park. While the national teams are preparing for next month’s World Cup tournaments in The Hague - with the men’s Black Sticks off to the Champions Challenge in Malaysia beginning next weekend - Hockey New Zealand is reviewing a successful inaugural Festival of Hockey in Hastings and moving on the construction of a national centre based on the North Shore. The six-nation women’s event in Hawkes Bay, won by world No 2 Argentina, was widely applauded for its concept and outcome, in terms of support and facilities. The idea is for it to become an annual international fixture, the next step being integrating leading European nations. The six nations were Argentina, Australia, China, Korea, Japan and New Zealand. - NZH
Lydia slips in Hawaii North Shore 16-year-old Lydia Ko has dropped down the leaderboard after the second round of the Lotte Championship in Hawaii. Ko fired a one-under 71 in her second round yesterday to sit in a share of 20th to be at one-under for the tournament after she opened with an even-par 72 on Thursday. Ko is seven strokes back from leader Angela Stanford (-8) who fired an eight-under 64 in her second round to storm to the top of the leaderboard. - APNZ

OUR VIEW
Life left in the ABA Coen Lammers EDITOR
T
here is life left in the Ashburton Business Association after all. The local business community has responded positively to the SOS call from the ABA executive who last month predicted that the organisation could be on its last legs. The lack of response to an emergency meeting last month, which was supposed to address the apathy towards the organisation, indicated a bleak future for the ABA. The executive must have scratched their heads after only a handful of locals attended last month’s meeting. Thankfully, the backlash and publicity that followed that meeting has triggered a terrific response by the business community, who this week showed up in force at another forum, hosted by Grow Mid Canterbury. Over 70 retailers and other business leaders discussed the future of the organisation and the message from the floor was clear, the ABA needs to change to stay relevant to the local business community. Association chairperson Carol Johns was the first to admit that her organisation needs to reinvent itself and she suggested ABA could rebrand and even rename itself. Ms Johns must have been relieved that her executive had not been flogging a dead horse and that there is a genuine appetite for a strong, coherent organisation that represents the local business community. The group has committed to meet again in a fortnight, during which more details will be discussed about the new direction and how this positive change will be achieved. Ashburton has a thriving business community and some have suggested they may be too successful at present to get actively involved in running a business group. This week’s meeting showed that plenty of entrepreneurs realise that you cannot operate in a vacuum and that Mid Canterbury businesses would benefit from a co-operative approach. The district may be booming, but unless local commerce has a strong, united voice, they are easily ignored by local and national authorities.
YOUR VIEW Traffic problems Allenton School pupils are not the only ones having traffic problems (Guardian 9/4/14). Twice in two weeks, while being parked (correctly) outside Allenton Shopping Centre, our car, with someone in it, has been backed into, both times by female drivers. We were not impressed – so be warned, we will be watching you. Part of the problem is that there’s not enough carparks for the number of people wanting to shop, so some stop illegally. One lady in a white Toyota (7/4) will know who she is – she was confronted by this irate car owner. She said she was in a hurry, so parked illegally, on yellow lines next to the pedestrian crossing, then backed into us. There’s no excuse for that. We’ve got your plate number,

so watch it, in future. We have also noticed that some drivers don’t stop at the intersection, so “go-get em” Allenton pupils! Record their plate numbers! Slightly angry

Inspired by the lumberjack events at the recent A&P show, Methven’s Hanne Nielsen found herself at a wood chopping party.
“
Monty Python was kept alive by playing the lumberjack song at full volume while replenishing our strength. The wood got cut alright, but the events of the day have made an impression that is sure to last longer than our neatly stacked rows of pine: it made me really appreciate the friendships we have formed since living in Mid Canterbury. Their generous help meant the task was done in a fraction of the time we expected, and the banter throughout made

recently arrived back in Methven to crisp autumn days, chilly nights and the first roaring hearth of the season. With kindling stocks running low, I was also just in time for the annual wood chopping chore. Usually that means getting outside with the axe and settling in for the long haul, devoting many hours to the solitary company of the rhythmic swing. Not this year, though: Inspired by the lumberjack events at the A&P show we decided to make an event of straightening out our own pile. Up went the marquee, in came the log splitter, on went the checked shirts and gumboots and we were ready to rumble. First up was the safety demonstration. Lesson number one: Under no circumstances is it a good idea to reach under the blade of the log splitter to turn the machine on or off. Lesson number two: As long as you keep lesson number one in mind, you should be sweet as. From there on in, we were like a team of worker bees: lifting, cutting, stacking, and repeat. The wheelbarrow was a welcome addition to our arsenal of arm power, but only short lived: once a certain member of our party realised how comfortable it was to sit in, it was repurposed into an artistic piece of garden furniture, right beside the brazier. The brazier was, of course, kept burning the entire day, with the logs that were prematurely sacrificed acting as the equivalent of the batter that doesn’t quite make it into the cake tin. Of course, traditional Kiwi snacks were a must – cue the green onion flavour chips and Louise cake. Buttered scones were an oversight, but the spirit of

“A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step” WHY TRAVEL?
We all have our reasons and here are some of them. A necessary escape - It sucks to be stuck in a rut. We all know what that is like. Travel can be the perfect answer. In the dead of winter, with snow on the ground, what could be better than a swim in the waters of Muri Lagoon in Rarotonga?
MEMORIES
If someone was to ask you about your past, I’m sure stories of your previous trips away would come to mind before the endless hours you spent at the office. The people you met and the unexpected experiences you had.
EDUCATION
Travelling the world teaches you things you will never really learn with formal education. Politics, history and geography all come
“
to life when you are standing somewhere where events actually took place. When you can see and touch buildings and objects that are thousands of years old, you certainly appreciate your place in the scheme of things.
ADVENTURE
No one really looks back wistfully on a trip to the supermarket, well I certainly don’t. But what about a bungee jump at Victoria Falls, or a walk with lion cubs at sunrise?

We all need to do this – be a stranger in a strange land just once and see how it changes your outlook on life. It may be uncomfortable at the time, but when you look back on it you will realise what a great experience you have had.
Be a stranger in a strange land just once and see how it changes your outlook on life.
BE GRATEFUL FOR WHAT YOU HAVE
I always realise when coming back home from a trip just how far away we are from the rest of the world. While this distance may be a hassle when planning your holiday – and it certainly does add to the expense, I am morethan happy to live on a small island at the bottom of the South Pacific. We are a long way away from the hustle and bustle of the big populations and all the problems that can bring.
Why United Travel? We are always here to help, no matter what.
Get total peace of mind with our 24 hour emergency assistance, and have peace-of-mind, no matter where you are in the world, that we are with you all the way.
New Zealand’s most experienced travel company.
We have the experience and knowledge to make sure your holiday really counts. We visit destinations to bring back the latest news, views and advice to share with you.
We don’t just book a room or a flight. For us, it’s so much more than that.
A journey is the opportunity to experience new sensations, designing new memories; a new way of seeing the world.
We’re travellers too.
We love travel as much as you, which continually drives us to find the adventure and ‘good oil’ in every location you could ever wish to explore.
United Travel gives you Fly Buys.
That means you get rewarded every time you travel.

AND SO HOW CAN WE AT UNITED TRAVEL HELP YOU DECIDE WHY YOU WANT TO TRAVEL?
We still have 2 spaces available on our group tour to Africa, which amongst other things will take in farm visits in Natal, Elephant Valley Lodge in Chobe Botswana, Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and an extension to the Serengeti plains in Tanzania. In September Carolyn and I will be travelling to Iran for a couple of weeks. Why? Well, apart from the reasons above, and a desire to hunt out new travel destinations, I think it will be great as she has to walk 10
steps behind me for a fortnight. Carolyn is quite happy with that as apparently I will set off any landmines first. Then she tells me I can’t have a whiskey for the whole time we’re away, because for religious reasons it is a dry country. It will still be cheaper than checking into a Betty Ford clinic though. See – we all have our reasons for travelling! We hope to see you in the office sometime, so you can tell us YOURS. Kevin Crequer United Travel kevin@unitedtravel.co.nz

All sectors are very different to the way they were at the beginning of the century, with innovation driving significant change. Developing technology has resulted in the emergence of a number of new channels, with many being led by consumers themselves. Product reviews online, social-networking platforms and viral marketing are all part of the new marketing landscape. As consumers change so must your business. Businesses have altered the way they source products and how they market to increasingly diverse and knowledgeable customers. away from traditional industry business models. Even long-standing companies have felt the strain of rapidly changing market conditions, and have had to find fresh ways of satisfying, attracting and growing their consumer base. Whilst traditional advertising still plays a part in a well-rounded marketing strategy, tactics such as digital direct marketing have made it easier for businesses to reach their customers. E-Commerce has been part of the landscape since the 1990s but is still evolving. It can be difficult to keep up, meaning it is more important than ever to regularly review your marketing strategy and
seek expert advice. Today’s consumers have more choice and far more product information than ever before. Online tools are putting customers in touch with each other, which makes them far more powerful and influential. Information is real-time with good news and bad news travelling quickly. Understanding what drives decisions and responding to customer feedback is vital so you need to start being part of customer conversations. Companies that actively engage and manage their online reputations are far more likely to outperform those who do not. You should seek out opportunities for meaningful interaction. Customer engagement is a fundamental part of your marketing strategy. Being open builds trust, a central element in fostering loyalty. Matt Hannah is a senior manager for KPMG Private Enterprise

The Ashburton Trust has invested $1 million over the past 18 months in refurbishing Hotel Ashburton. Trust chief executive Giles Beal said the work had taken the hotel into the 21st century and meant it was now in a strong position to pitch for increasing business in the conference market. With several connecting rooms the hotel is able to handle large conferences. The upgrade also strengthens its ability to cater to the growing Asian tourist market, Mr Beal said. While colours may vary, a similar theme has been used through the house bar, dining room and conference areas. Toilet areas have also been upgraded and all that remains to complete the work is a car-
pet replacement, he said. “We’re about to crack into a big marketing campaign now for the bar and restaurants and we’ll be opening for lunches at the end of the month.” The $1 million investment puts the trust at about the halfway point in its renovation programme, with the next step completing the upgrading of accommodation. Twenty-four of the hotel’s 54 guest rooms have already been upgraded. “We’re starting to see some challenges now from Christchurch with a few more hotels opening up and that means we need to get our hotel up to four-star standard,” Mr Beal said. The renovations were bringing the hotel back up to where it needed to be to fulfill its role as the district’s accommodation flagship, he said.

Royal shearing demo Britain’s Prince William and his wife, Kate, have enjoyed a sheep-shearing demonstration and greeted crowds of flowerbearing fans at an agricultural fair in Sydney. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent yesterday morning at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, an annual fair that brings country life to the city with animals, rides and wood-chopping competitions. Their itinerary includes seeing local wildlife at Sydney’s harbor side zoo and traveling to Uluru, the iconic red sandstone monolith in the Outback. - AP
Mayor’s rocky time Embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford acknowledged “rocky moments over the past year” but vowed to fight harder than ever to win re-election at a rally he dubbed the official launch of his campaign. Ford, who was the first to register as a candidate in January, invoked the spirit of second chances during a speech in front of supporters yestersday. Ford is seeking re-election on October 27 despite acknowledging last year that he had smoked crack cocaine “in a drunken stupor.” Volunteers gave out one free drink to everyone at a hall in a Toronto suburb. There were lineups for Rob Ford bobble-head dolls that were being sold to raise money for the campaign. - AAP
Italy sells cars Italy’s cash-strapped government has raised more than 370,000 euros by selling 52 luxury cars owned by the state through online auction site eBay, the prime minister’s office says. On the first day of sales, Rome managed to sell executive vehicles worth $A551,400 from the sale of “auto blu” cars, the name given to those owned by ministers and state officials. The sell-off was sanctioned by new prime minister Matteo Renzi. - AAP
Clinton expecting Chelsea Clinton and her husband, Marc Mezvinsky, are expecting their first child later this fall. The 34-year-old daughter of former President Bill Clinton and exSecretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton made the announcement at the end of a Clinton Foundation event in New York on empowering girls. There has been wide speculation about a future baby in the Clinton family. Chelsea Clinton said told a group of young female students that she feels “all the better whether it’s a girl or a boy that she or he will grow up in a world with so many strong female leaders.” - AAP
Live crucifixions Thousands of people have flocked to rural fields in the Philippines to witness the gruesome spectacle of men being crucified. The ritual, held every year to mark Good Friday in Asia’s bastion of Catholicism, has been going on for decades, becoming a major tourist draw despite official disapproval from church leaders. Organisers said at least nine men were scheduled to be nailed to wooden crosses this year. - AAP
Six die on Everest At least six climbers have been killed after an avalanche struck Mount Everest, with all of the dead believed to be Nepalese sherpas working on the peak ahead of the start of the climbing season, officials say. “Rescuers have already retrieved four bodies and they are now trying to pull out two more bodies that are buried under snow,” Ang Tshering Sherpa, president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, said on Friday. The avalanche occurred around 6.45am (1pm NZT) at an altitude of about 5800 metres in an area known as the
“popcorn field”, which lies on the route into the treacherous Khumbu icefall, Sherpa said. He said that many other climbers had also suffered injuries, but could not give exact numbers. A tourism ministry official, who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, said the climbers were all of Nepalese origin and were preparing the route to the summit ahead of the main climbing season which kicks off later this month. “So far, we know that 14 Nepali climbers were taking equipment and baggage up to the area, it is unclear how many

Sub scours ocean for missing jet
Poster boy prosecutor
A robotic submarine headed back down into the depths of the Indian Ocean yesterday to scour the seafloor for any trace of the missing Malaysian jet one month after the search began off Australia’s west coast, as data from the sub’s previous missions turned up no evidence of the plane. It was the fifth attempt by the Bluefin-21 unmanned sub to find wreckage or the black boxes from Flight 370 in a distant patch of seabed. The sub, which can create sonar maps of the ocean bottom, has now covered 110 square kilometres of the silt-covered seabed, but has thus far found nothing, the search co-ordination center said. The sub’s last mission hit a record depth beyond its recommended diving parameters,
which can potentially cause risk to the equipment, the US Seventh Fleet said in a statement. The equipment is being closely monitored. Officials are desperate to find some physical evidence that they are searching in the right spot for the Boeing 777, which vanished March 8 with 239 on board on a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing. A weeks-long search of the ocean surface hasn’t
turned up a single piece of debris, and officials on Thursday determined that an oil slick found in the search zone did not come from the plane. The Bluefin is searching a remote stretch of ocean floor about 4500m deep in an area where sound-locating equipment picked up a series of underwater sounds consistent with an airplane’s black box, but it went down to 4695m during mission four. - AAP
State prosecutor Gerrie Nel has become a global cult hero and a rare poster boy for South Africa’s beleaguered public sector through his fiery cross-examination of Oscar Pistorius and mauling of expert witnesses. Forensic geologist Roger Dixon is a clever man, but when he slinked out of the witness box after two days of withering cross-examination at the hands of South Africa’s favourite “pit bull” prosecutor, he looked a little less smart. “I’m fine,” he said. Well, perhaps when compared to the previous day, when the accomplished university scientist was forced to admit on the stand that he was a “layman” who had no training in sound or light measurement, nor ballistics, nor pathology. - AP

YOUR STARS by Forecasters
ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20) Where there is likely to be pressure and tension, you’re able to use this to raise the bar on what you expect from love over the coming year. TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21) Chances are you’re feeling unprepared, with the coming year much more of a mystery than is usually the case, which makes it all the more exciting. GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 22) The long weekend needs to be a balancing act, with time to catch up with friends or social matters, but also time out to recharge your batteries. CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 24) Extra time the long weekend affords is a chance to invest in some quality friendship and relationship building, making up for lost time. LEO (JULY 24 – AUG 23) With life about to become a lot more professionally focused, do what you can to keep your professional hat off over the long weekend. VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 23) The Sun and Moon get together to create the kind of weekend you didn’t see coming, with a chance to embrace a sense of adventure and have some fun. LIBRA (SEP 23 – OCT 23) The long weekend brings a chance to make communication and relationship matters a priority, focused more on opening up than solving issues. SCORPIO (OCT 23 – NOV 24) While the Sun will leave your work sector over the long weekend life is set to remain busy, making it important to take time out to relax and unwind. SAGITTARIUS (NOV 24 – DEC 21) The stars are encouraging a last hurrah over the long weekend, keeping your work hat off and embracing a playful and romantic spirit instead. CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 20) With work/life balance issues continuing, take care of any housekeeping over the long weekend that will make life more user friendly. AQUARIUS (JAN 20 – FEB 19) With social and serendipitous lunar vibes in play fate will be creating the right moments, but it’s up to you to make the most of those moments. PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20) While any weekend is a good time to catch up with friends, a long weekend is especially good, with social and serendipitous forces in play.
