After a run of starting on the back foot in recent seasons, Mt Hutt will kick right into gear from the outset when it opens today.

Mt Hutt will be the first major skifield in the South Island to open for the season and a bumper day on the slopes is on the cards for those who make the trek up the mountain.

Hundreds of skiers are expected

to flock to the mountain for the first day of the new season today and they will get to enjoy conditions that have been missing in recent years, with a strong base of snow already covering the mountain.

And after a few years of slow starts, that’s a welcome relief for those charged with overseeing the day-to-day running of the popular skifield.

“Our snow base is sitting be-

tween 30 and 50cm on our main trails which is significantly better than the last few seasons,” Mt Hutt Ski Area manager James McKenzie said. “Thanks to the 2530cm snow dump on Sunday and long periods of cold temperatures, the mountain looks like it’s been dipped in white chocolate – it’s absolutely stunning up here.”

Also a massive bonus for today’s opening is that the mountain will be fully operational with all the

main trails open.

“We know there’s a lot of keen skiers and riders who have been waiting for this and we’re looking forward to rolling out the white carpet,” McKenzie said.

A busy off-season will see some new changes for visitors to the mountain with improvements made to the base lodge with upgraded toilet facilities and newlook coffee bars.

joy some new terrain too, with 21 hectares added at the south-west face.

The introduction of new snow guns and modified terrain on the upper mountain will boost snow coverage on the higher runs also.

Things are expected to improve over the course of the weekend, with a modest snowfall predicted for Saturday which could result in one of the most successful opening weekends in recent history.

Be careful when heading south Mid Canterbury people travelling to Timaru and back over the next week are being asked to take care around the intersection of State Highways 1 and 29 at Rangitata.

Road safety improvement work will begin there from Monday; the new layout will improve safety for turning vehicles.

“A number of traffic incidents have been observed at this in-

tersection, in particular where northbound traffic exiting the Rangitata to Upper Orari Bridge Highway (SH79) on to the Rangitata to Hinds Highway (SH1) fails to give way and cuts in front of oncoming traffic travelling at open road speed,” says Transport Agency highway manager Colin Knaggs.

“In order to improve the safety

of the existing road layout, the exit off the Rangitata to Orari Bridge Highway, between the rail crossing and State Highway 1, will be narrowed with concrete kerbing, new give way signage and pavement marking installed to encourage traffic to give way until access on to the main highway is clear.

“The new layout will effectively change State Highway 79 into a

single left turn out /right turn lane in.” The design takes into account the turning movements of heavy vehicles and truck and trailer units to ensure drivers can still easily manoeuvre the intersection, he says.

The new layout will not alter the existing level of service, nor cause any significant delays. It will take about a week to install the new

layout and there should not be any significant traffic delays while the changes are going in place.

This work is an interim safety improvement solution, while the design for a more extensive intersection upgrade progresses.

Improved safety at busy rural road intersections is a component of the Safer Journeys road safety strategy action plan.

Couple get taste of life as a refugee for five days

Antony and Kate White will experience a glimpse into the reality and hardship of life for refugees next week.

Taking part in the programme, Operation Refugee 2017, for five days, they will be sponsored to live off a kit that includes only rice, tuna, oil, legumes, salt and flour.

As of yesterday afternoon, they had raised an impressive joint total of $755.80, well on the way to their target of $1500.

“Sponsorship has come from friends around the world,” Kate said.

“We put something on Facebook about it and we’ve had money donated from Japan, Switzerland, Canada, the US, Timaru, Mosgiel, Fairton and Lake Hood, so far.”

By also sponsoring themselves, they earn the right to purchase a spice, for example up to 40g of stock or Moroccan seasoning.

“It makes me already value all the amazing food we have access to,” she said.

“It’s a small sacrifice to make for a few days.

“Millions of people have no choice but to use these kind of rations for themselves and their families for months and years on end.”

The Operation Refugee 2017 challenge aims to put participants in the shoes of Syrian refugees for five days from June 16-20.

New loos for Lake Camp Tourism Minister Paula Bennett yesterday announced $105,000 of funding would be allocated for works to construct toilet facilities at Lake Camp.

The announcement is part of $5.2 million offered in co-funding for 16 councils from Queenstown to Whangarei.

The new facilities at Lake Camp respond to the significant increase in visitor numbers around the Ashburton Lakes and will help manage existing pressure.

Up until now, the council has had to make use with porta-loos during peak summer months.

Projects were funded through the second round of the Regional Mid-sized Tourism Facilities Grant Fund and provide support for councils with high visitor numbers and small ratepayer bases.

Mrs Bennett said funding would be a relief for communities and help them respond to the steady stream of visitors they are seeing.

“We’ve heard from industry and local government that infrastructure is their number one priority and have responded accordingly,” Mrs Bennett said.

“Now I am interested in what the projects are that we can fund to support our growing and successful tourism sector.”

Wilding pines to get a Volunteers to celebrate birthday hiding at popular spot

Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury will hold its 10th birthday celebration this month with a theme of Live, Laugh and Share.

Born-and-bred Mid Cantabrian and founder of the student army, Sam Johnson, will be the guest speaker at an event held on June 21 at the Ashburton MSA from 7pm.

Coinciding with the anniversary is the National Volunteer Awareness Week which runs from June

18-24. Each year New Zealand celebrates the vital contribution of New Zealand’s 1.2 million volunteers in areas as diverse as social development, the economy and the environment.

Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury co-ordinator Dellwyn Moylan said there are many benefits to volunteering, offering people purpose, motivation, reward and satisfaction.

“Volunteering provides you with a way to give back to your community and make your com-

munity a better place for you and those you care about,” she said.

The Ashburton MSA event on June 21 will include celebrations, guest speeches, and an It’s in the Bucket competition.

Tickets are just $10 for financial members of Volunteering Mid and South Canterbury and $15 for guests.

The price includes supper.

These can be purchased from Community House, Cass Street, Ashburton, by midday on Friday, June 16 as there are no doors sales.

The Ashburton District Council will begin removing wilding pine trees from Lake Camp next week, to control the invasive species from further spreading in the area.

Council district forester Terry O’Neill said the work would take advantage of central government funding currently available for wilding conifer control and will be carried out on council-administered land.

“Work is currently under way on the development of a Lake

Camp and Clearwater Management Plan,” he said. “The work to be carried out next week will not conflict with this plan.

“The funding for this project is an opportunity that we would like to use, especially given the threat these trees pose to the area’s biodiversity.”

Mr O’Neill adds that some trees will be retained to provide shelter for campers and other lake users.

The work is expected to be finished by June 30.

It was a great ‘nite’ for a bite

Baring Square East was brought to life for Wednesday’s Bite Nite, with a spectacle of entertainment and mid-winter festivities celebrated under a canopy of lanterns and lights.

The Ashburton Youth Council (AYC) hosted event saw food trucks serve a range of treats, while people could have their picture taken in a photo booth, or sit and enjoy performances.

This included improvised comedy from the Court Theatre Company Scared Scriptless, World Championship of Performing Arts NZ team member Krishay Nadan and hip hop act Life Dance Academy.

Money raised at Bite Nite will be donated to local youth organisation, 24/7 Youth Work.

AYC chairperson Alyce Lysaght estimated more than 500 came along on the night.

“We had an amazing time creating this event for Ashburton and

are very appreciative of the support we received from the public,” she said.

“This event was funded by the Ministry of Youth Development with the aim of giving AYC the opportunity to learn how to run a large-scale community event.

“We used it as an opportunity to fundraise for 24/7 Youth Work who are currently in Ashburton Intermediate and College and it was fantastic to have them at the event to help us out – it was a real team effort.”

The Year 6 pupils were among primary school students and their families who toured around the college as part of its annual open day on Wednesday. Year 7 and 8 dean Rana Richards said about 150 students, parents and community members attended.

Many of the youngsters had been excited to see the various specialist education areas for each subject, with the science labs in particular being popular.

An information evening was to follow the open day at the Year 7 to 13 school, which has a roll of about 475 pupils.

Euthanasia bill to be debated Parliament is going to debate a bill that would allow voluntary euthanasia in New Zealand.

ACT leader David Seymour’s End of Life Choice Bill was drawn from the member’s bill ballot yesterday.

It will go on parliament’s agenda for a first reading.

Also drawn from the ballot was a Green Party bill that would make it legal for people suffer-

ing from a terminal illness or any debilitating condition to use cannabis “with the support of a registered medical practitioner”.

That bill will also come up for a first reading.

Mr Seymour’s bill gives people with a terminal illness or a “grievous and irremediable medical condition” the option of requesting assisted dying.

It defines those eligible and

details a comprehensive set of provisions to ensure it is a free choice made without coercion.

It also outlines a stringent series of steps to ensure the person is mentally capable of understanding the nature and consequences of their decision.

MPs will have a conscience vote on the bill and parties won’t take positions on it.

Preventing children becoming overweight at such an early age has the goal of improving long-term health, Prof Williams said.

“Our research indicates that children who were overweight or obese at age 3, or were in overweight or obese trajectory groups from that age to 38, are at higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease,” he said.

A health study that has consistently tracked 1000 people born in Dunedin in 1972 and 1973 has found childhood obesity is linked with heart disease in middle age.

The Dunedin Study has followed all aspects of the health and development of the chosen group, and recent findings have appeared in the International Journal of Obesity.

One of the authors, Professor Michael Williams, says being overweight or obese as an infant is a known risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease, the number one cause of death worldwide.

Bring on the snow!

T

oday’s the day Canterbury ski bunnies have been dreaming of.

Staff on Mt Hutt have woken up to a glorious blanket of white snow, signalling, not only a spectacular opening day, but an exciting season to look forward to as well.

To be fair, they haven’t had the best of seasons in recent seasons, so there’s high hopes for 2017 being the best opening in about five years.

Thankfully, the snow gods have been kind to the Canterbury skifield this year, with Mt Hutt becoming one of the first major South Island ski fields to open for the season today.

Thanks to a snow storm on Sunday, the mountain received a 25-30cm dump of the white stuff.

The snow-making team has also been producing “tonnes and tonnes” round the clock, bringing the snow base to between 30 and 50cm on the main trails.

A forecast that promises “a modest amount of new snow” on Saturday, and long periods of cold temperatures, means another award-winning season seems to be on the cards.

This is in stark contrast to last year when there was a big dump of snow leading up to opening weekend, but north-westerly winds arrived to reduce the base.

Opening day is also the chance for new staff, who have descended on the ski town, to get to grips with their new job and a taste of what is described as “Canterbury’s playground”.

Many started arriving at the weekend, with management expecting up to 260 new employees from the UK, France, throughout Europe, China and Asia.

The influx of visitors will hopefully be a major boost to Methven’s local shops, bars, cafes, restaurants, accommodation providers and adventure sport stores.

While they expect locals will be heading up the slopes early, managers say it takes a few weeks for the international tourists to arrive and then it’s time for school holiday fun.

After a few years where things haven’t gone as planned for local ski enthusiasts, at least the stars seem to be aligning for a positive start to 2017.

Let’s hope they’re rewarded with the bumper season they’ve been longing for.

ate last week, Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne announced New Zealand is to remove restrictions around cannabidiol (CBD), in line with international developments.

For something that has little or no psychoactive properties, but has much potential therapeutic value, this is the ground-breaking change many have been waiting for.

When we asked our Facebook followers what their thoughts were on the announcement, we were inundated with people both surprised, optimistic and relieved at its prospect.

Comments included that it was, “great progress”, a “step in the right direction” and something chronic pain sufferers had been waiting for.

Once restrictions are removed, the changes mean CBD would be able to be prescribed by a doctor to their patient and supplied in a manner similar to any other prescription medicine. Is it something you agree with? Does it go far enough? Let us know your thoughts.

ell I made it through another Harness Jewels weekend, thank god it’s every two years and not an annual workout for the liver.

I was concerned for my fiancée’s health though, well mainly the health of her eyes, with the excessive rolling she gave them, especially on Friday night when I arrived home from the function and announced I may have accidentally bought a share in a racing pigeon.

I had the pleasure of MCing the Parade Ring Marquee again this year and wanted to thank all those in there for a fun day.

Aussie racing correspondent Adam Hamilton popped in for an interview during the best-dressed fashion show and said, “Why go anywhere else on course, this is where all the action is.”

It was another awesome weekend.

I must admit, when I woke on Sunday a little worse for wear, I thought I really should look after myself better, maybe even start working out again.

Before giving up on the ‘thinking’ exercise, because it was making my headache worse, I did wonder, what exercise do

You hear doctors recommending regular exercise to keep our bodies functioning optimally and in good shape, what we don’t always hear from them is what type of exercise they recommend. What do DOCTORS do?

So, I did some research and found this. That exact question was put to a number of doctors in America, and one workout in particular came out the clear winner – yoga.

While popular exercise activities like brisk walking, weightlifting, and running all made the list, EVERY doctor polled indicated that he or she was a regular yoga participant, if that is the right term.

• Hot yoga detoxes the muscles • It improves flexibility One doctor said she feels that doing yoga as part of two to three hours of exercise per day tricks the brain into thinking we’re growing younger.

I could see my current doctor doing yoga, but when I think of some I’ve had in the past, I reckon their favourite workouts were running late.

Well, that’s what they were doing every time I saw them.

While we are talking doctors, I had a really interesting chat with Phil Gifford this week. He’s got a new book out.

As you can well imagine, Phil is not the sort of bloke who will suggest you switch to silverbeet sandwiches and kale smoothies.

It’s a good, easy-to-read and common-sense approach to men’s health from a bloke who’s had both hips replaced and survived three types of cancer. He’s got skin in the game.

One thing I came away with from the read (I eventually got back to the doctor segue) was, your doctor should be working with you on your health, much like a sports coach would and if they don’t – get a new one!

A whiff of Watergate

Lawyers and aides close to Donald Trump are reportedly bracing for the worst and fear the President won’t take an attack by former FBI Director James Comey lying down.

It comes amid renewed calls for Trump’s impeachment and a daring statement released by Comey, who was sensationally sacked by the President last month.

In the seven-page statement, Comey details every meeting and call he had with Donald Trump.

The statement has been released a day ahead of Comey’s testimony to the US Senate committee, which is investigating whether Russia interfered in the US election and if Trump’s team helped.

The President’s lawyers and aides have been urging him against acting on the statement and testimony, but advisers privately fear he will ignore their advice and tweet anyway, The Washington Post reported.

Roger Stone, a long-time Trump friend and former political adviser, told the Post: “He’s not going to take an attack by James Comey lying down.

“Trump is a fighter, he’s a brawler and he’s the best counterpuncher in American politics.”

Meanwhile Alan Dershowitz, a Harvard Law School professor and criminal law expert said it’s hard to tell a very wealthy and powerful man not to tweet.

It comes as several Republicans have also urged the President to turn off the TV and phone.

President Donald Trump ‘obstructed justice’.

Republican from North Carolina, who will chair the Comey hearing said Trump tweeting won’t change the testimony.

According to CNN, many Republicans fear Trump’s tweeting could add to the spectacle surrounding the testimony.

Senator Jeff Flake of Arizona said there had been speculation the President would live tweet.

“I would argue that’s not a good idea. I think anybody would tell him that,” he said.

But Kansas Senator Pat Roberts went one step further, urging the President to say nothing at all.

“You never get hurt by what you don’t say ... or tweet,” he said.

While Trump’s tweeting is all part of his brand, Republicans fear posting today is not appropriate and critics could use it to argue he’s trying to influence things.

The saga comes as two House Democrats announced they will be launching a longshot bid to impeach Trump.

The effort by Al Green of Texas and Brad Sherman of California has little chance of success in the Republican-led House and doesn’t even have the backing of many fellow

Democrats, the Associated Press reported.

Despite that, the politicians said they were drafting articles of impeachment because Mr Trump obstructed justice when he fired Comey.

Federal authorities said they had definitive evidence the Kremlin meddled in the US presidential election.

“The question really is whether the President can obstruct justice with impunity,” Green said.

“We live in a country where no congressmen, no senator and not even the President of the United States of America is above the law.”

Green first called for Trump to be impeached in a speech last month.

Neither politician would give a definitive timeline on when they plan to file the articles of impeachment but Sherman said it could happen in weeks, not months.

He also acknowledged any vote in the House to impeach Mr Trump would fail – unless further evidence of possible wrongdoing comes to light.

Many Democrats have distanced themselves from impeachment talk, pending the outcome of the investigation.

In a stinging opinion peace for the Washington Post, blogger Paul Waldman wrote the Russia scandal was not Watergate yet but it was certainly getting a lot closer to it.

While admitting the scandal was “feeling awfully familiar” to Richard Nixon and the Watergate scandal, Waldman wrote he didn’t believe the President would be impeached - at least as long the Republicans control the House.

Searchers find bodies, aircraft pieces A navy ship found bodies and aircraft parts in the seas off Myanmar while searching yesterday morning for a military transport plane carrying 120 people, a spokesman said.

The Chinese-made Y-8 turboprop aircraft disappeared Wednesday afternoon about a half-hour after leaving Myeik, also known as Mergui, for Yangon on a route that would have taken it over the Andaman Sea. It was raining, but not heavily, at the time.

Nine naval ships, five army aircraft and three helicopters were searching for the plane yesterday morning, a military spokesman said.

General Myat Min Oo said the ship found two life jackets, three bodies and a tyre that was part of an aircraft wheel.

The bodies were of a man, a woman and a child.

The wreckage was found

in the sea west of the town of Laung Lone.

The plane carried 106 passengers “mostly families of military personnel” and 14

crew members.

Fifteen of the passengers were children.

It is not unusual for such flights to carry civilians to off-

set transportation costs for military families stationed in the somewhat remote south.

An announcement posted on the Facebook page of the commander of the military, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, said contact was lost when the plane was believed to be about 32 kilometres west of Dawei, formerly known as Tavoy.

The military said Myanmar received the Y-8 plane in March last year, and since then it had logged 809 flying hours.

The area is about 440 miles (700 kilometres) north of the last primary radar contact with Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, which vanished on a flight from Malaysia to Beijing on March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board.

That plane is believed to have flown off course and crashed into a remote area of the southern Indian Ocean.

Rebates ‘money for jam’ donations to churches, as well as donations to schools and kindergartens.

But only 54 per cent of donations had the rebate claimed back.

“It’ll be around $200 million sitting unclaimed,” Cunniffe said.

“That’s cash that the Government is happy to give back to people in recognition of the donations that they’ve made.”

He said many people didn’t realise they only needed to have donated $5 to be over the rebate threshold.

“People are not generally required to interact with Inland Revenue.

“You roll back the years and people used to sit down and file a tax return, and when they did that, they also claimed their donations rebate at the same time.

“Now there’s millions of people who don’t interact with Inland Revenue at all.

“While that removes a lot of angst and unnecessary paperwork from the system, those people have also stopped thinking about what they’re entitled to. “ For those worried it could take a lot of paperwork, Cunniffe said it was actually an easy process.

“The key thing you need is the receipt.

“If you have the receipt you can get a form online from Inland Revenue.

“Very easy form to fill in, you basically just add up the total of your receipts, attach the receipts and post them off to Inland Revenue.”

Cunniffe said it best when asked if there was any reason not to claim it. “Look, it’s money for jam.”

Goodman Fielder plans to close two factories in Auckland, consolidating their production to a single site and shifting its pie-making operation to Palmerston North as part of an ongoing efficiency drive in what it calls “a very competitive market”. The diversified manufacturer owned by Singapore-based Wilmar International and Hong Kong-listed First Pacific Co will close its Irvines bakery at Wiri and its Hot Plate bakery in East Tamaki.

The Irvines line will relocate to Palmerston North while production at Hot Plate will be consolidated to Goodman’s larger Quality Bakers Auckland facility.

“While we take the time to assess the responses we have received from interested parties including Mr O’Malley’s community based initiative, it’s not appropriate for us to comment on the specific detail of these responses,” a Mondelez spokesperson said.

The pledges ranged in size from $50 to $50,000 and had come from New Zealand and as far away as Australia and the United States, he said.

Several “wealthy individuals’’, whom O’Malley would not name, had also indicated they were interested in discussing a future contribution, he said.

The pledges were non-binding, but those making them had been asked to do so only if they intended to invest in the future, he said.

The results so far were “pretty exciting’’, he said.

The pledge period runs for two weeks.

Rescue pledges hit $2.5 million

The bid to save Dunedin’s Cadbury factory is continuing to gain momentum, after pledges worth more than $2.5 million poured in over the last day since it launched.

Jim O’Malley, a Dunedin city councillor, said he was ‘’really happy’’ with the public response, a day after unveiling a plan to raise $20m to keep the Cadbury factory open on a portion of the site.

He hoped to raise between $5m and $10m through the pledge site, www.ownthefactory.co.nz which would provide a “stepping stone to getting the rest of the money’’, O’Malley said.

The plan involved a public share offer, preceded by a two-week pledge period designed to gauge interest by inviting the public to indicate their potential financial support.

The page received $1.6m worth of pledges in the first 24 hours and has since jumped to $2.5m.

Mondelez, the owner of Cadbury and the factory, said it had received several expressions of interest from parties wishing to take over production of Kiwi treats including Jaffas and Pineapple Lumps, and was working through these.

Some Apple users could be in for a shock, with the tech giant announcing all devices manufactured in 2013 or earlier will soon be made obsolete. Apple has announced its iOS 11 update will only operate on 64-bit devices at the World Developers Conference, which means older models such as the iPhone 5 and 5c will no longer receive updates and security fixes.

The iPad 4 and hundreds of apps will also be made obsolete under the new software as it will remove support for 32-bit apps.

Just because you’re feeling charitable doesn’t mean you need to shoot yourself in the foot.

You’re able to get a tax rebate worth a third of your charitable donations, and yet, only about half of Kiwis take the Government up on that offer.

It makes no sense to leave that money going begging.

You could get the rebate back, and donate it all over again. Or you could take yourself out for breakfast to reward yourself for being one of the good ones.

Both are great options, but first, you need that cash in your pocket.

The point is, the Government set up this sweetener for a reason. It’s designed to encourage people to keep giving to charities.

Just because you’re doing the right thing doesn’t mean you need to pinch your wallet any harder than necessary.

And yet, the issue is actually getting worse. Since 2008 the

number of people picking up their rebate has dropped by almost 10 per cent.

That’s leaving hundreds of millions extra in the tax man’s purse.

It’s a great thing to give money to charity. You put your money where your mouth is, making sure the causes you care about get that little bit extra.

Sure, you’re not saving the world all by yourself, but you’re giving it a nudge in the right direction.

Claiming some of that cash back is just getting what you’re owed from the tax man, not undermining your good deed.

In my view, anything that encourages people to give more money to charity is a good thing.

So I talked to Tax Management NZ chief executive Chris Cunniffe, to find out how to get your rebate.

He said New Zealanders were “world class givers”, donating around $1.3 billion each year.

■ Heat the oil in a large saucepan over a low heat, gently cook celery, onion and garlic until tender. Add the flour cayenne pepper and smoked paprika. Stir and cook for 2 minutes.

■ Add the potatoes, corn and chicken stock. Stir while bringing to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes. When

the potatoes are almost cooked add chopped smoked chicken.

■ Add parsley, milk and sour cream and heat through but do not boil. Season to taste.

■ Sprinkle over extra chopped parsley before serving.

In contrast to its rebellious name, the Rogue is far from being rough-and-tumble. It’s cool and collected, with effortless steering and a smooth ride.

The amount of room inside the 2017 Rogue is impressive. While it offers about the same amount of overall volume as competing compact SUVs, the Rogue seems to use every inch wisely.

Showcasing the future of travel

I

t might sound wildly futuristic to be talking about flying cars, electric planes and a driverless racing car capable of speeds of up to 200mph, but these and many other fantastic new technological concepts will be on display at the new FOS Future Lab feature from June 29 to July 2.

The 200,000 plus visitors to the sell-out Goodwood event will be able to interact with a stunning showcase of what the future of transport might be like, alongside cutting-edge technologies used beyond the automotive world.

The exhibit positions the festival, which has become known as the new British Motor Show, firmly at the heart of discussions on the future of travel and technological innovation.

The star of the show is ROBOCAR – the world’s first driverless electric racing car, designed by Daniel Simon (Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, Captain America).

These astonishingly beautiful cars are designed to take part in Roborace, a motorsport championship for autonomously driving, electrically powered vehicles on Formula E circuit.

Fast and sleek, there is no space for

driver to sit anywhere, which is mindblowing to see in action. The technology behind making these cars work on the track is a story in itself.

Alongside will be exhibits from the future of flight, with flying cars from NeoXCraft, a British designed product, engineered and built by VRCO. This concept is for a future private, luxury flying road vehicle, in the quadcopter style. It is a leading example of the hot topic of VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) craft, which are strongly influencing the future of private land-to-air transport solutions today.

PAL-V ONE (Personal Air and Land

Vehicle), a vehicle design which combines a gyrocopter with tricycle undercarriage (already available to order) will also be on display alongside solar and supersonic planes from Boom Supersonic. Boom Technology is making a supersonic airliner faster than Concorde, yet so efficient tickets will be affordable to the average airplane passenger. Stand-out small hatch

B

efore my first drive, I already guessed that this new, fifth generation, Impreza Sport was going to be even smarter and more capable, yet still be a driver friendly, sporty hatch.

And in the Subaru tradition, still do this with a touch of individuality.

As well, it’s now easier on the eye than before with more appealing, sharply-tailored styling and 17-inch alloy wheels.

While being 35mm wider, it sits 10mm lower, so betters the previous model’s already impressively low centre of gravity.

And although it is of course the entry model to the larger models in the Subaru range, it gets a grown-up inventory of safety and interior highlights.

The cabin’s space, quality and furnishings are a real step up, but there’s still a real sense of practicality about it.

There’s more than ample head and leg space in the rear for two (three if needed) adults.

Meanwhile those sitting in the front have well-shaped, long distance comfortable seats.

There’s dual zone air-con, and a large centre dash 8-inch touch screen with its easy to use and understand visual cues, to take care of the infotainment needs of all aboard.

There’s also Apple Car Play and Android Auto connectivity.

Being packed with this and a long list of

other standard gear including the EyeSight driver assist system with adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, pre-collision assist and more, I had to keep reminding myself that I was driving a hatch that costs just $29,900!

There’s auto start/stop, key-less entry, tyre pressure warning and of course permanent all-wheel-drive, all of which you don’t usually expect, or get, for this money.

With the rear seats in place (they of course fold) the load area is a useful, and easily loaded, because of the high opening hatch, 364 litres.

Under the bonnet, and continuing that Subaru tradition, is the latest version of the 2-litre flat four (boxer) engine.

Now with direct injection it produces 115 kilowatts of power at 6000 rpm and 196 Newton metres of torque at 4000 rpm.

This suitably punchy, yet frugal (claimed and a see-able 6.6L/100km) engine is well mated up with an excellent 7-step Lineartronic CVT. While this has both a sequential system and paddles, either of which are useful for hill work, most times this CVT is best left to do its thing.

It does that very well and ensures an always-brisk performance.

As to its underpinnings, this is the first model to benefit from Subaru’s new chassis/platform, which will be used by all their new models over the coming decade.

While this is stronger and lighter, the Impreza weighs in a little heavier because of all that new safety gear.

Even so, it still uses less fuel thanks to its sleeker shape, more efficient engine and the seven-step CVT. In concert with this new chassis with its very well set up suspension is the wondrously reassuring grip from the ubiquitous permanent, all-wheel-drive system.

With this, the low centre of gravity and the contribution of the 205/50,17 inch Turanza tyres, you get a quite amazing handling package, from what, for all intents and purposes, is a family vehicle!

It turns in sharply and responds exactly how you expect it to, sitting flat through corners in a neat sporty manner.

Meanwhile the ride quality and comfort remain very good.

All in all it provides a very enjoyable, but if you wish, easy drive.

Because of very strong overseas demand, Subaru NZ was limited to only 300 new Imprezas.

They all quickly sold, with the next lot arriving in September.

This clearly justified Subaru’s Wal Dumper’s launch comments of it being “the best value vehicle for many a discerning Kiwi driver.”

Meantime the new higher riding XV arrives at the end of this month.

With it, there seems a good chance, that it to will carry the same price as the current model – $37,990.

Obituary

Gluyas’ a family affair Dave Moore T

Amongst these is a very interesting one of Henry Ford senior together with his then current edicts shown in large letters.

It reads “Coming together is a beginning Keeping together is progress Working together is success.�

Which pretty much says it all, both about the history of the Gluyas Motor Group and their new dual Ford and Nissan franchise, which will be officially opened at 3pm today.

For the Gluyas family, the coming together with Ford happened in 1954 when Peter’s grand-father RJ “Dick� Gluyas purchased the Ford dealership from the then Ashburton Motors. Dick had for many years operated a service station on the present site, and sons John and Richard were employed in the business.

Upon Dick Gluyas’s untimely death in 1955, keeping together was to be a real challenge. For at that time John was just 21, far too young and inexperienced, both in the eyes of the then Ford hierarchy and the bankers, to be able run such a challenging business. But John, with Richard’s help, fought hard and won! They then grew and expanded the business, including tractors and farm machinery.

John retired in 1987 when Peter took over the management.

Retired he may have been, but John kept an active interest in the dealership until his death in 2005.

Prior to returning to Ashburton Peter had, following university, spent eight years working in a variety of roles for the Ford company itself.

His final position before returning to Ashburton was South Island Dealer Manager.

Interesting that John of course, was one of the dealers!

The opportunity of working together with Nissan, who have a long history in Mid Canterbury, arose last year. Historically Ford have not favoured dual franchises, so Peter’s considerable negotiating skills were needed to bring this all together.

He’s very proud of the customer-focused result and, of course, the much wider range and choice of new Ford, Nissan and Mazda vehicles now on show, and available.

I was very sad, as no doubt were many others who enjoy motoring stories both in print and on radio, to learn of Dave’s unexpected death.

Over the years I have been very fortunate to enjoy Dave’s company on motoring events.

Dave was an imposing character with a truly wonderful knowledge of, not only all things motoring, but planes, trains and ships as well.

Any or all of which he was very happy to share.

And indeed to provide guidance to those contemplating buying a vehicle, or writing a story about one.

We will all miss you Dave!

Terrific two-wheeled trio

T

his year sees a trio of small capacity adventure motorcycles finally hit New Zealand roads.

But why are we excited about a group of sub-400cc bikes?

The range of compact adventure bikes that has been announced is staggering.

Even more so when you consider that, before the international motorcycle trade show EICMA in Italy, we had no idea anyone was even thinking about such a concept.

The wide array of bikes from Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, BMW and KTM means there will be a bike to match any rider’s desire.

If it’s exploring the lesser ridden roads and back country of Aotearoa or even the world, there is a compact adventure bike to suit.

One of the biggest problems with the pre-2017 adventure market was the sheer size of the bikes.

Forgetting about the occasionally eye-watering price tag, the other great problem has been the growing size, and therefore weight, of adventure bikes.

Even KTM and its rally-inspired Adventure range has been guilty of spending a little bit too much time at the buffet, weighing in at over 229kg.

Can you imagine heading out on a gravel road and having to lift that?

These new mini adventure models will allow a wider range of riders to explore the country in relative comfort.

Seriously, there is nothing like swinging a leg over your bike and hitting the road, and these bikes will make it easy to do.

With larger front wheels, from 18-in up to 21-in, great protection from the ele-

ments – thanks to well-designed fairings and screens – and seats that offer decent comfort, these little machines should keep us riding much longer than other bikes in the same capacity bracket.

At the beginning of the year we theorised the majority of the class would come in under the magic $10,000 mark, and we weren’t wrong.

You’ll soon be able to grab a slice of adventure for as little as $8490 for the BMW entry.

With the bikes we’re particularly interested in coming in at under 400cc, that also puts them well into the LAMS market, with much cheaper yearly registration costs.

Then, of course, there’s the fuel economy smaller engines bring.

When it comes to value, these bikes look close to unbeatable.

Dakar Rally, the CRF250 Rally adds a host of quality bits to the already capable CRF250L it’s based on.

Most notable changes from the 250L are upgraded suspenders, bigger fuel tank, and the rally-inspired body work. The CRF250 Rally might be the smallest bike in terms of capacity, but if the specs are anything to go by, the little Honda has the most going for it as a go-anywhere bike in the class.

And it wouldn’t be a GS without taller suspension, all-day comfort and a bit of tech, which it has.

Kawasaki Versys-X 300 The Versys-X 300 leans more towards the touring side of the adventure equation.

But we won’t hold that against it, as a 19-inch front wheel matched with a 17 at the rear will enable it to handle some of our less-used gravel roads.

Best of all, thanks to a high ground clearance, there shouldn’t be any issues with bashing the underside of the little Versys on anything, unless you are taking it well off the beaten track.

However, the best news for the Versys-X is what will be at its heart: the same 296cc parallel twin we know and love from the Ninja 300.

That means it won’t be lacking in the go department.

Mono a real showstopper

Patience key for Lord Snow Lord Snow has been a work in progress and he’s now ready to get back into action after a lengthy break.

The son of Postponed will make his first appearance for 10 months when he steps out in the Elm Street Development 1400 at Avondale today.

“He’s ready to go again and he’s been taken along quietly – he’s a very big horse so he’s needed some time,” said Moira Murdoch, who trains the Postponed gelding with her daughter Kieran.

Lord Snow was a debut second on the course last year before he broke his maiden next time out at Te Rapa and another second followed before he was turned out.

He recently finished fourth in an open trial to ready him for his return.

“He’s got a bit of weight (60kg) so it remains to be seen how he copes with that,” Murdoch said.

“He will be better once he gets to a mile, but he is forward enough to run a cheeky race.”

The stable is also looking forward to the return of the promising mare Sacred Siren in Saturday’s Balance Agri-Nutrients 1400 at Te Rapa.

Te Akau pair off home Hall Of Fame and Splurge will return to Te Akau on Monday without competing alongside their five stablemates and travelling companions on Stradbroke Handicap day at Doomben on Saturday. Gr.1 Levin Classic winner Hall Of Fame was found to have mucus in his trachea when scoped after his fifth placing in the Listed Queensland Day Plate at Doomben last month and trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards decided against running him again.

Rebel has winning cause A bold first-up showing at Te Rapa tomorrow is expected from Sacred Rebel. The Sepoy youngster goes into the Visions 1200 off the back of an 850m trial success at Taupo last month. “He won his trial nicely and he’s a really good type,” trainer Tony Pike said. “He’s still a bit new, but on raw ability he should go close.”

Team in peak order for marquee day Jamie Richards is satisfied with what the Te Akau team has achieved through the Brisbane carnival, but says the success of the campaign will be measured by the results at Doomben tomorrow.

The Matamata horseman shares training duties of the team with Stephen Autridge, but has been the man on the ground in Brisbane through the winter carnival and will saddle a marquee team on Queensland’s blue riband day of racing.

In action are star filly Melody Belle in the Gr.1 J.J. Atkins (1600m), Hong Kong-bound three-year-old Shocking Luck in the Gr.1 Queensland Derby (2200m), Zambezi Warrior in the Brisbane Cup (2200m), Heroic Valour in the Listed Daybreak Lover (1200m) and Jimmy Rea in the Listed Mark Hinkler Handicap (1200m).

“It’s grand final day for us.

These are the races these horses have been set to win,” Richards said.

“It’s been great to win a couple of black-type races on the way through, but these are the races we’re here to win.”

Melody Belle is the most favoured to win.

A clinical 4 3/4-length winner of the Gr.2 QTC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at her last start, the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes and Karaka Million winner is as short as even money with Australian bookmakers.

Shocking Luck, a $5 favourite for the Derby, returns to the scene of his Rough Habit Plate (2000m) triumph last month, having weakened to sixth in heavy going

in the Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago.

“He worked with Zambezi Warrior on Tuesday and Opie was really happy with him too.

“He said it was as good, if not better, than going into the Grand Prix,” Richards said.

“Going back to Doomben on a better surface is going to help him and he’s got a lovely barrier [drawn one].

“This is the last start he’ll have for us before heading up to Hong Kong so hopefully we can send him off on the right note.”

Richards rated Zambezi Warrior a “realistic chance” in the

Brisbane Cup after a fourth placing in the Chairman’s Handicap (2000m) at Doomben and second in the Premier’s Cup (2200m) at Eagle Farm at his past two starts.

“He’s in good form.

“He’s improved out of sight on the trip and he’s thrived since the race the other day,” Richards said.

“He’s not great away from the gates so he’ll probably get three or four back the fence from the draw [barrier three] and he might need some luck from there.

“Jeff Lloyd rode him in work on Tuesday and he was happy and I’d like to think he’s a winning chance.”

Richards said the carnival had been a “massive learning curve” for him personally, having to deal with the frustration and fallout of missing the payment deadlines for Melody Belle and Shocking Luck, meaning both had to have late entry fees paid, but a successful day tomorrow would give him immense satisfaction.

“It’s pretty daunting to have the favourite for both the JJ Atkins and Queensland Derby, but also a massive feat for us and that all stems from the horses Dave [Ellis, Te Akau principal] buys, the support from our owners and the efforts of our entire staff.

“A lot of effort has gone into getting these horses ready to be at their best for this carnival.

“Now, hopefully, we can have a bit of luck.

“It’s exciting but I’m more nervous than excited at this stage to be honest.”

Unbeaten hurdler Second Innings has been side-lined by a tendon injury. “He broke down after his last run at Awapuni,” trainer Paul Nelson said. “It’s a shame, but even if he has a year off he’ll be young enough to come back again.” The winner of four races on the flat and placed in the Listed Taumarunui Cup, Second Innings claimed two easy wins over fences at Riccarton last year before he beat Danza Lad at Te Aroha in his only other jumping appearance.

Sole survivor of ‘50s game

The Crusaders have named a slew of All Blacks forwards in their side to play the British and Irish Lions on Saturday night.

Crusaders head coach Scott Robertson has named a strong side that includes an All Black tight five and a backline consisting of the Super Rugby talent which has seen the Crusaders go through the season unbeaten to date.

Robertson said the team is under no illusions about how tough the Lions challenge will be.

“This is a huge and exciting challenge for us.

“We are facing some of the best rugby players in the world, but we have some of the world’s best in this team too, so it will be a fantastic clash.

“No matter how it unfolds, this will be a game that the players involved will remember as one of the special moments in their careers.”

The only changes to the team that beat the Highlanders last weekend are a rotation at halfback with Bryn Hall starting and Mitchell Drummond on the bench; a switch to second five for David Havili with Israel Dagg coming in at fullback; and Tim Bateman coming in via the bench.

Kickoff between the Crusaders and British and Irish Lions is at 7.35pm on Saturday night at Christchurch’s AMI Stadium.

A visit to our shores by the British and Irish Lions always brings back fond memories for 91-year-old Ken Smith.

Smith, is the last remaining player from Mid Canterbury who was a part of the Ashburton-North Otago side who took on the visiting British Isles side in 1950 at the Ashburton Showgrounds.

And if there is one thing that the former Technical Old Boys player remembers more vividly than anything else about the whole experience, it’s not the game, but more the weather leading up to and during the match which the visitors were victorious 29-6.

“There was a howling nor’wester,” Smith recalled.

“I was working for the power board at the time and we had a rather late night of work the night before the match due to the big winds bringing down power lines all over the place.

“We had worked all day and then into most of the night.”

While the wind dissipated somewhat the next day, there was still some work for Smith and the boys to undertake when they arrived at the grounds for the match.

The wind had been that strong that it had snapped one of the goal posts, so a quick fix-up job was done to get them match-ready.

“We got it back up with ropes, I don’t think it was very even by the time we had finished, but it did the trick.”

Smith, who played hooker in the match, was good enough to trial for the All Blacks two years before the match against the British Isles.

He was described in one newspaper article as being a very fast hooker, who had he been slightly bigger would have been a strong contender for the highest honours in rugby.

From the match itself, the Ashburton-North Otago side played with the strong wind at their backs in the opening half and had their rivals under the pump and led 6-0 at one stage through a try and a penalty.

But when the two sides turned around, the British Isles side put

their foot to the floor and ran away with the match, scoring 29 unanswered points.

“They were a very slick side, with some very good players,” Smith said.

Both teams retired to the MSA following the match for a dinner function and, in Smith’s words, “a few beers”.

Now residing at Tuarangi, Smith will be keenly following the results of this year’s British and Irish Lions side, but can’t see them being too much of a challenge for the All Blacks when they square off.

“We have some incredible players, we should be too good for them I would think.”

Two new All Blacks Hurricanes duo Ngani Laumape and Jordie Barrett are the two new names in the All Blacks squad to face Samoa and the British and Irish Lions.

While hooker Dane Coles been has included in the squad but All Blacks coach Steve Hansen revealed he may only be available for the third test due to struggles with concussion symptoms.

Highlanders second-five Malakai Fekitoa is arguably the biggest omission while Crusaders midfielder Ryan Crotty has been named in the squad despite suffering a rib injury in last week’s game against the Highlanders.

Three players in Ofa Tu’ungafasi, Sonny Bill Williams and Rieko Ioane all played in last night’s victory over the Lions at Eden Park.

Jordie, Beauden and Scott Barrett are the first sibling trio to be named in the same All Blacks squad and will be just the fourth set of three brothers to play for the All Blacks, following the Brownlie and Nicholls brothers in the 1920s and the Whitelocks in recent years.

“Obviously, it’s a very special occasion for the Barrett and Laumape families, with Jordie and Ngani being selected for the first time,” Hansen said.

“Jo rd i e has been in outstand-

ing form, he has a skillset which is complete and has a great running and kicking game.

Ngani too has been impressive throughout the Super season and has forced his way in through commanding performances,” Hansen said.

The selectors named Jack Goodhue, hooker Liam Coltman and loose forwards Matt Todd, Vaea Fifita and Akira Ioane as injury cover.

The squad will again be captained by number eight Kieran Read with Ben Smith as vice-captain, and the makeup of the squad

sees 17 forwards selected (three hookers, five props, four locks and five loose forwards) and 16 backs (three halfbacks, three first fiveeighths, three midfielders and six outside backs) and has a total of 1,164 Test caps experience and an average of 35 Test caps per player.

The Barrett family makes history, with exciting fullback Jordie’s inclusion alongside first fiveeighth Beauden and lock Scott representing the first time three brothers have won inclusion in the same All Blacks squad.

Jordie Barrett travelled as an “apprentice” on last year’s northern hemisphere tour.

“Jordie has been in outstanding form, he has a skillset which is complete and has a great running and kicking game,” Hansen said.

“Ngani too has been impressive throughout the Super season and has forced his way in through commanding performances.”

Hansen says the squad was “by far the toughest” he has picked for some time and some quality players have missed out.

In the loose forwards, Read and flanker Liam Squire are recovering from broken thumbs while Jerome Kaino is overcoming a knee complaint.

To cover them, Matt Todd and the uncapped Akira Ioane are named on standby, with the inform Steven Luatua not required.

Halfpenny demands results from Lions

By Angelo Risso The British and Irish Lions avowed themselves to a patient approach at the start of their 10-match New Zealand tour, but goalkicking ace Leigh Halfpenny feels the Test side’s focus should be more results-oriented from now on.

The Lions arrived last week espousing a methodical buildup to their All Blacks test series, saying one or two losses to Super Rugby opposition wouldn’t be seen as a tragedy.

But after an underwhelming tour opener against the provincial Barbarians and Wednesday’s 22-16 loss to the Blues, Halfpenny indicated he no longer held that attitude.

A more ruthless approach may begin on Saturday against the Crusaders.

“I think we play this game to win, judged on results, and we take the field and prepare each day to win – that’ll be the focus for the next game,” the Welsh fullback said.

“It’s disappointing to lose but we’ve got to pick ourselves up now, and quickly.

“Maybe we go back to the drawing board, have a look at the video, look at where we can get better and get back out on the training field and put those things right.”

An unerring kicker, Halfpenny – who is on his third Lions tour – put his side one point in front with a trio of penalty goals at

Eden Park, only for Ihaia West to rain on his parade.

The 28-year-old ex-Toulon star said his side was developing inch by inch, with improved combinations and a stronger set-piece, but still offering little in attack.

New Zealand teams, by contrast, were deadly at a moment’s notice.

“You can’t switch off for one second, they can hurt you.

“They play the full 80 minutes and we have to be fully focused,” Halfpenny said.

“There’s still improvement to go but we controlled our half well, got out of our half when we needed to and, on occasion, when it was on to play, we did.”

Exciting team to face Lions Charlie Ngatai and Nehe MilnerSkudder have been included in a Maori All Blacks squad to face the British and Irish Lions.

Maori All Blacks coach Colin Cooper has named an experienced 27-man group bristling with attacking talent for the Lions’ fifth tour match, at Rotorua on June 17.

Chiefs back Ngatai – who has played once for the All Blacks – is included despite ongoing concussion concerns.

He spent a year on the sideline because of the symptoms and he experienced headaches again after finally returning to the field last month.

All Blacks 2015 World Cup star Milner-Skudder missed most of last year with a shoulder problem and has been sidelined for much of 2017 with a foot complaint, before recently returning to the fray with the Hurricanes.

Cooper must put together a backline that features that pair, along with Chiefs fullback Damian McKenzie, an unlucky omission from the All Blacks squad.

Intriguingly, in-form Chiefs winger James Lowe is listed as a midfield back.

Hooker Ash Dixon is captain of a squad boasting ample Super Rugby experience.

Veteran loose forward Liam Messam is the senior figure in a forward pack that includes threeTest flanker Elliot Dixon.

There are just three newcomers to the Maori jersey – halfbacks Bryn Hall (Crusaders) and Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi (Hurricanes) and midfield back Rob Thompson (Highlanders) Cooper said the magnitude of the match was huge and representing Maoridom meant they are never short of motivation.

“Knowing the ground will be full for the match, and getting a feel for the support that’s coming from the Rotorua community in hosting us, along with the rest of New Zealand around the series and the match itself is exciting,” Cooper said.

These two sides last met in 2005, when the Maori side won a fierce contest 19-13 in Hamilton.

Djokovic bundled out Dominic Thiem has produced one of his finest displays on clay to knock defending champion Novak Djokovic out of the French Open.

The 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 6-0 quarter-final win over world No.2 Djokovic was the latest masterclass from Thiem.

Yet the sixth-seed’s reward is a Roland Garros semi-final against an opponent the Austrian has labelled his “toughest opponent ever” – Rafael Nadal.

“It’s amazing to defend my semifinal from last year,” Thiem said.

“Rafa is the toughest opponent ever at Roland Garros.”

Nadal takes a 4-2 head-to-head record into the showdown with Thiem, and has dropped just 22 games during his charge towards an unprecedented 10th title at Roland Garros.

“I don’t know how many games I lost this year, but I really don’t care about this, no?” Nadal said.

“I only care that I am in the semifinals.”

Thiem is the only player to have beaten the Spaniard on clay this season, winning their encounter in Italy just last month.

“When I beat him in Rome, all was going well for me, everything was landing in,” Thiem said.

“It will be a different story on Friday.”

Thiem, 23, is under no illusion to the difficulty in becoming a grand slam winner.

“I mean, it’s a joke how tough it is to win a slam,” Thiem said.

“Because obviously now I beat Novak. On Friday is Nadal. In the finals there is another top star.

“That’s why it’s a slam because it’s such a tough achievement.”

Thiem, who plays with a singlehanded backhand, said he needed to improve the defensive side of his game after struggling against the ferocious top-spin of Nadal’s forehand during their past encounters.

“I just have to watch that I’m not giving him his favourite positions on the forehand,” Thiem said.

“I mean, it’s one of the best shots, I think, ever in tennis.

“So anyway, you cannot avoid it all the time. I will concede some winners on Friday.”

Thiem has put in some scintillating displays in Paris this year and, like Nadal, has yet to drop a set at the tournament.

“I like the conditions,” he said.

“I am in semi-finals with a very positive feelings,” Nadal said.

“I played well in all the matches here. I have positive feelings and am playing well.”

Nadal has now recorded 100 bestof-five-set wins on clay from 102 matches – his only defeats coming at Roland Garros to Robin Soderling in the round of 16 in 2009, and to Djokovic in the 2015 quarter-finals.

Defending Supercars champ Shane van Gisbergen has more race wins than any driver this season, but knows he needs to improve one key area if he is to record back-to-back titles.

The 27-year-old trails team-mate Jamie Whincup as well as Shell V-Power rivals Scott McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard in the championship battle despite winning four of the 10 races so far this season – but admits his starts have been causing him some issues.

He was beaten off the line twice at the last round at Winton and has consistently struggled for parity, let alone making ground on his rivals in the opening couple of corners.

“It has never been my strong point but I’ve really been working on it and getting better and better,” van Gisbergen said.

Sport Costa feeling unwanted Chelsea striker Diego Costa has claimed manager Antonio Conte has told him he is not part of his plans. Costa, who scored 26 goals in 46 games for the Premier League champions last season, has said Conte sent him a text message informing him of his fate. Costa did not feature for Spain in the 2-2 friendly draw with Colombia in Murcia, but spoke to reporters about his club future. “I’m a Chelsea player, but they do not want me there,” Brazilian-born Costa said.

“Antonio Conte has told me by message that I do not follow at Chelsea and that’s it. Conte said he did not count on me for next season.”

Mercedes staying in F1 World champions Mercedes have dismissed suggestions they may be quitting Formula One racing next year. Former F1 team principal Eddie Jordan had suggested in an interview with Germany’s Auto Bild Motorsport that Mercedes may end its engagement as a works team after the 2018 season, sell the team and continue in the sport as engine suppliers only. But Mercedes motorsport chief Toto Wolff insisted “the reports are totally unfounded and nothing more than malicious speculation of an individual.”

Runners from Ashburton College and Mount Hutt College hit the hills surrounding Mountanview High School on Wednesday, all in a bid to be crowned champions at the Aoraki Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships.

Nine students from Ashburton College and seven from

Mount Hutt College competed, with six students finishing in the top five of their sections.

For Ash Coll, Quinn Ritchie finished second in the intermediate boys’ section, while Taonga Mbambo finished third in the senior boys.

Representing the girls, Natasha Waddell placed fourth in the senior girls’ section.

finishes, the three runners will now be competing at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country for the Aoraki region.

Joining the group in Christchurch in mid-June will be Matt Clough, who was unable to compete at the Aoraki championships due to injury.

team, leaving them without the required number of runners to compete in the teams’ event.

Aimee Elliott from Mount Hutt College placed third in the senior girls’ section, while Courtney Elliott placed third in the junior girls section.

Charlie Brown was the other Mount Hutt student to place in the top five, finishing fourth in the junior boys’ section.

Broncos drop Hunt Brisbane have dropped halfback Ben Hunt for tonight’s NRL clash with South Sydney. Hunt, who is set to join St George Illawarra on a multimillion dollar deal next season, is expected to turn out for Ipswich in the Queensland Cup on Saturday.

Coach Wayne Bennett is expected to replace Hunt with veteran Benji Marshall against the Rabbitohs.
