High seas continue to bite into the coastline fronting the Hakatere Huts settlement, forcing the closure of a visitors’ carpark for good.

Ashburton District Council issued notice of the closure of the park at the end of Hakatere Drive in the upper part of the seaside settlement yesterday.

Council roading manager Brian Fauth said coastal erosion caused by high seas had caused further damage and the cliff edge was now unstable.

Drivers will no longer be able to park their vehicles in the carpark and pedestrians have been warned to stay well clear of the cliff edge.

“Signage has been installed in the area advising the community to not park in the area and we will also put a fence up to restrict vehicle access,” Fauth said.

In the interim temporary barriers have been erected.

No baches are under threat, however, Environment Canterbury will be assessing the situation.

remain open and the community will still be able to visit the area, however, we encourage people to be cautious and to not get too close to the cliff.”

Council contractors will begin fencing off the carpark in coming days.

It is the latest in a series of sagas involving coastal erosion to have dogged the community in recent years.

Job expo popular with redundant workers

Jobseekers were keen to see what was on offer at an expo hosted in Ashburton by Silver Fern Farms yesterday.

Twenty-one employers turned out for the expo, which was held in the Sinclair Centre primarily to support workers made redundant by Silver Fern’s decision to shut its Fairton plant last week.

While local employers made up the bulk of those in attendance, others had travelled from further afield – one from as far

away as Bulls, near Palmerston North.

Silver Fern Farms Fairton personnel officer Frances Renner said the morning had been hectic, with former plant workers and local Work and Income clients quick to take advantage of the event.

Silver Fern administrator Helen Burzelman also had her hands full updating CVs for jobseekers.

A resource centre set up by the company will remain open in the Sinclair Centre until 4pm tomorrow.

Station alterations won’t affect merger

Refurbishment work at the Ashburton Fire Station has been delayed to add to the scope of the project but will not impact of the planned merger of rural and urban fire services.

Originally work was to have been completed prior to next month’s merger in which national urban and rural fire services combine to become Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ).

On a local level the Ashburton Volunteer Rural Fire Force was set to move in with the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade in its Burnett Street premises on July 1, lifting the number of firefighters

operating from the station from 35 to 50.

While there was enough room at the station to house the rural fire appliances, alterations were required to accommodate the additional volunteers.

Work was initially planned to begin in May, however Ashburton brigade chief fire officer Alan Burgess said planning consents had only recently been lodged with the Ashburton District Council.

Burgess said the scope of the project had altered since the initial plans were discussed, to include strengthening the building, asbestos checks and other compliance related work, to avoid the

need for further interruptions to the service in the future.

Originally the intention was to extend the existing station, however it became apparent it would be more cost effective to revamp the existing space, with the addition of a new shed to house the station’s van the only alteration to the footprint.

The merger of the fire services will still go ahead as planned on June 1 with the rural and urban continuing to operate under separate roofs until the refurbishment work is completed.

Burgess was unsure of the new time frame for this. Tenders for the project will be issued in the near future.

The cliff-front properties were deemed unsafe to occupy under the Building Act. At the time, former chairman of the hut holders committee Ross Lithgow told the Guardian the area in front of the doomed baches was the size of

a cricket pitch, but it had been reduced to less than a couple of metres at the time of demolition.

The following year the steps which had provided beach access at the southern end of the lower settlement for generations washed into the sea, leaving beachgoers high and dry.

The steps opened the way to the Ashburton rivermouth for whitebaiters and anglers.

Best opening in years

Lots of snow has equated to the best Mt Hutt Ski Area season opening for about five years.

With a base of 30 to 50 centimetres on main trails, thanks to a natural snowfall earlier this week and cold temperatures favouring snowmaking, skiers and snowboarders can not wait to hit the mountain.

While the snow base generally climbs over one metre each year and sometimes even over three metres, huge early snowfalls are not common and this year represents the best opening base since about 2012.

Opening day is tomorrow, and the weather is looking good for the morning although strong north-westerlies are predicted for the afternoon.

Cold temperatures will follow on Saturday, with a skiff of snow in the forecast.

Big Al’s Snowsports manager Kirstie Gilchrist is among business people getting ready in the ski town. She said several locals had been in touch and she had begun setting up skis ready for them to pick up for the weekend.

Normally the first two weeks were relatively quiet, before it picked up with tourists from around the world coming into the town as school holidays approached.

She was happy not only about the good opening snow base, but also the fact there was more snow in the forecast for Saturday.

“It’s looking a little more promising than it has in the past, so that gets everyone a little bit more excited,” Gilchrist said.

Bumper snow year may not happen

This winter may not be the bumper snow year skiers are hoping for, according to NIWA. The climate organisation’s meteorologists are forecasting above average or near average winter temperatures for all regions of New Zealand, and a slightly more westerly wind flow favoured by the atmospheric circulation around the country.

However, they are not putting a downer altogether on skiers’ dreams, and say that storms and good snowfalls are still likely.

Meteorologist Ben Noll said not only will intermittent cool spells through the early part of winter be good for snowmaking, but he

would be surprised if there were not some big snowfalls throughout the winter.

“There should be more mild days than cold ones overall, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t be frost free and it won’t snow,” Noll said.

It was more so in terms of the overall flavour of the season there was a chance there would be less snow than normal, but all it took was one or two good snow events to boost skier perceptions of a good winter.

The NIWA outlook is predicting that from June into July, frequent high pressure systems may contribute to extended periods of dry and settled weather across much of the country. At the same time,

warm Tasman Sea surface temperatures may help to energise storms as they head toward the country from time to time.

NIWA has also recently released its autumn summary and May summary. It was the wettest autumn on record for parts of the North Island, and rainfall was well above normal for parts of the northern and eastern South Island, including coastal Canterbury, however for Mid Canterbury soils were drier than normal at the end of autumn. The eastern side of the South Island mostly experienced near or below average temperatures.

Arbor Day celebrated at Borough School

Students at Ashburton Borough School got in to the full swing of Arbor Day yesterday, planting a selection of native plants.

The native poa cita, a type of tussock, was planted, along with a single South Island kowhai.

Co-ordinating teacher John Hooper said the work was being done on the tussock bank feature that had been constructed in 2012.

“We are just planting to fill in the gaps that have opened up, as well as planting the kowhai to celebrate Arbor Day,” he said.

“It is authentic learning, and learning with a purpose,

which is really good.”

Forest and Bird Ashburton Branch chairperson, Edith Smith, was on hand to guide the students through the delicate process of planting the natives.

“All of what we planted here today is locally sourced from our nursery,” she said.

“We work with a few schools on projects around the region.”

Revamped car dealership re-opening High profile government minister Amy Adams will officially open Ashburton’s Gluyas Motor Group car dealership on Kermode Street on Friday.

At 3pm guests will be piped in by the Canterbury Caledonian Pipe Band and introduced by managing director Peter Gluyas.

As well as Adams, guests will include former Gluyas Motors director Richard Gluyas, Tactix Netball Team and NZ Under 21 Netball Team member Kate Lloyd, Ford managing director Simon Rutherford, Nissan managing director John Manley and Bradford Building’s Roger Bradford.

There will be a short video on the history of the car dealership before Adams opens it and undertakes a ribbon cutting alongside Richard Gluyas and Lloyd.

Afternoon tea will follow.

The ceremony will be part of two opening celebration days at the dealership, from 8am to 5pm Friday and 9am to 3pm Saturday, when there will be tours of the newly updated premises, coffee and food, and competitions.

Gluyas Motor Group has recently added the Nissan franchise to its longstanding Ford dealership.

Art and movement combine at gallery Tai chi enthusiasts are taking advantage of the immersive environment and relaxing atmosphere created by the Ashburton Art Gallery’s latest exhibition, Transpiration by Steve Carr.

Transpiration is a six-channel time lapse projection of carnations soaking up coloured dyes,

and is being exhibited in the Colin Redmond Gallery.

Icy nights equals icy roads

A vehicle smash in Alford Forest early on Sunday afternoon has prompted warnings to take extreme care on Mid Canterbury rural roads as winter bites.

The ute involved went off a bank near the intersection of Arundel Rakaia Gorge Road and Forks Road at 12.10pm on June 4, near the Alford Forest Rural Fire Force HQ. A rescue helicopter was dispatched from Christchurch to collect a woman who had injuries, a man was taken to Ashburton Hospital by ambulance.

While it was unclear whether ice was a factor in the smash, it was timely to warn motorists of the dangers associated with winter road use in view of the recent cold snap, a police spokesperson said.

Last winter black ice claimed the life of 25-year-old David Hosea, 12 days after his car skidded off Seafield Road and collided with a pole.

“Motorists need to keep their speeds down, allow plenty of stopping distance and be mindful of snow, ice and black ice,” the spokesperson said.

“When a clear and cold night follows rain, surplus moisture on the roads will freeze over and create a high probability for black ice.”

Any patches of roadways which appear to be wet are likely to be black ice, particularly in the early morning. Areas shaded by roadside trees are particularly treacherous.

With this in mind the NZTA has launched its Winter Journeys campaign this week.

Working horses steal show at ploughing

Working horses stole the show at the Hinds Young Farmers ploughing match on Saturday Twenty-two horses in eight teams turned out for the event with aim of qualifying for the New Zealand championships.

Five single furrow ploughs and three double furrow ploughs were entered, with Oxford team John Chynoweth and Sharon Chambers taking the honours in near perfect conditions on Ian Lowe’s property at Hinds.

Two teams from Erewhon Station also performed well with Colin Drummond coming in second followed by Erin Cassie in third place.

Three people will take up the reins to compete for Canterbury at the national competitions next year.

Organiser Roger Smith said the horse plot was marked out differently to enable competitors to get a straight line in the strike out.

“They can’t see over the horses’ backsides where those on tractors are able to follow a series of

“When we are marking out the plot for the horses we put a small furrow along the edge for them to site their strike out and get the first furrow straight.”

Other than that the horse plough men and women get no

preferential treatment and are judged by the same criteria on the same score sheet as the tractor competitors, Smith said.

Timaru ploughman Bob Mehrtens took out first place in the Silver Plough contest, with Adam Mehrtens second and Robert Casey coming in third.

In the Vintage Qualifier event, Gordon Carter went home the winner, Robert Weavers was second and Colin Boon, third.

David Hight took out the Vintage Plain competition, with Roger Smith in second place and D. MacCulloch, third.

Cannabidiol decision a good move Megan Gnad

ate last week, Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne released an announcement many could scarcely believe was true.

In line with international developments, the Government was to remove restrictions around cannabidiol (CBD), the substance found in cannabis, which is currently a controlled drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act. For something that has little or no psychoactive properties, but has much potential therapeutic value, this is the ground-breaking change many have been waiting for.

When we asked our Facebook followers what their thoughts were on the announcement, we were inundated with people both surprised, optimistic and relieved at its prospect.

Comments included that it was, “great progress”, a “step in the right direction” and something chronic pain sufferers had been waiting for.

Once restrictions are removed, the changes mean CBD would be able to be prescribed by a doctor to their patient and supplied in a manner similar to any other prescription medicine, bringing us in line with the rest of the world.

Dunne said Australia had already taken a similar step, “while other countries are also responding to emerging evidence that CBD has a low risk of harm when used therapeutically”.

The announcement comes following recent high-profile cases where people had to fight and risk breaking the law in order to experiment with this pain relief option.

Nelson teenager Alex Renton was the first person to get approval to use CBD before his death in 2015. His mother now has a petition before Parliament to improve access to medical cannabis in New Zealand, at an affordable price.

NZ Drug Foundation director Ross Bell also applauded the move, saying it was a “very good decision” based on expert evidence.

It may not work for all, with some doctors allegedly remaining sceptical on the subject, but at least it offers people options, without having to break the law.

As our understanding and expectations alter, it’s refreshing to see government making bold steps and taking advantage of new rapidly-changing information.

Australians killed in attack Malcolm Turnbull has reached out to the families of two Australians killed in the London terror attack – a sickening rampage his foreign minister has described as savage beyond belief.

Prince Harry has also sent his condolences to those affected by the deadly London Bridge attack during a visit to Australia.

The names of the two Australian victims have not been officially released, although the family of one – nurse Kirsty Boden, 28, from South Australia – has confirmed her death.

The prime minister has also spoken with the family of Brisbane woman Sara Zelenak, who too was attacked on London Bridge after becoming separated from friends.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says the families are on their way to London and have asked for privacy.

Kirsty Boden about the 21-year-old in a Facebook post shared hundreds of times on Monday, saying she usually rang her mother daily.

The Boden family, in a statement released on Tuesday night, said Kirsty was running to help victims of the stabbing

and van attack when she was fatally injured.

“As she ran towards danger, in an effort to help people on the bridge, Kirsty sadly lost her life,” they said.

It was unclear if Boden was hurt when three men used a van to run down pedestrians on the bridge or when they went on a stabbing rampage in a nearby market.

The three terrorists were quickly shot dead by police.

The family, from Loxton in SA’s Riverland region, asked for “the privacy we need to grieve away from the public eye”.

Boden worked in the theatre recovery ward at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital which said she was a “one in a million” nurse who “always went the extra mile for the patients in her care”.

SA Premier Jay Weatherill offered his condolences, saying Kirsty’s death brought the horror of terrorism closer to home for all Australians.

Huge ransom behind diplomatic crisis A huge ransom paid to secure the release of kidnapped members of the Qatar Royal family was the final trigger which sparked Saudi Arabia and others to sever ties with the isolated nation.

The ransom, which was around $1 billion, was believed to have been paid to militias with close ties to Tehran, it was revealed.

The news comes as non-profit policy organisation, the Counter Extremism Project, revealed the full extent of how Qatar has been financing and harbouring a dozen terrorists and operatives who have been living freely within oil-rich Qatar.

It also comes as US investigators have blamed Russian hackers for breaching Qatar’s state news agency and planting a fake news report that helped fuel the crisis.

The Middle East was plunged into its biggest diplomatic crisis in years after Saudi Arabia and six other countries cut ties with Qatar following weeks of tension in the region.

On Monday, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Libya and the Maldives all severed diplomatic ties with Qatar.

They accuse the tiny Gulf state of harbouring extremist groups and suggested Qatari support for the agenda of Saudi Arabia’s regional archrival Iran.

As well as cutting diplomatic relations and ordering Qatari citizens to leave their countries within 14 days, the Gulf states and Egypt banned all flights to and from Qatar.

The incident came three days after militants drove a van at high speed into pedestrians in London before stabbing revellers on the street and in nearby bars, killing seven people and wounding dozens.

That followed a suicide bombing in the northern English city of Manchester that killed 22 people.

Roadside rage in Dorie district

A Dorie dairy farmer is delighted with his contract milkers – but disappointed in the Ashburton District Council for turning a picturesque country roadside into a quagmire.

Dima and Val Pospolitak have worked for Ted and Sue Rollinson for four years, milking more than 900 cows through the season.

Originally from the Ukraine, the couple have not only embraced life in Mid Canterbury, they have gone above and beyond the call of duty, Ted Rollinson says.

“They have kept the roadside mowed using their own ride-on mower – its 2.2km, planted lillies along the fenceline and sprayed weeds. They’ve done a very good job!”

These days it looks more like a construction site with unslightly furrows of earth turned up on to the roadside verge.

The problems began last year, when a grader driver worked on Awaroa School Road to lessen the impact of flooding.

A single furrow of earth was left in three or four spots on the verge, which Dima levelled off with a blade on the tractor.

Following heavy rain at the end of April, the contractors returned.

“This time they chipped nine furrows out of the frontage and left a real mess,” Rollinson said.

“I received an autoreply saying a manager would be in touch within five days,” he said.

Three weeks later he’s still waiting for that to happen.

Ted also questions the flood protection work done on the road to date, saying it has created a dam which prevents the water from flowing away, rather than drain the area.

ADC roading and street services manager Brian Fauth said drains were being constructed to get rid of the water which lies on the road in heavy rain.

will re-metal the road itself,” Fauth said.

With the unsealed roads, the road itself can end up lower than the berms and it acts as a drain holding water.

“What we try to do is metal the road to keep it above the berm, then we get drainage on to the berm,” he said.

“The berm itself has a saucerlike shape from the edge of the gravel up to the berm then, from that point back to the boundary is generally kept fairly clear and

flat.”

The depth of the swale is governed by how bigger dish is required. In some cases a drain is needed to carry floodwater.

“A drain is more rectangular, stormwater-type system,” Fauth said.

“That is definitely something you couldn’t mow or put a vehicle in, whereas a swale can be traversed and mown easily.”

Fauth believed the work on Awaroa School Road has yet to be completed.

Workshop to advise on on-farm drug use Mid Canterbury farmers needing advice about how to deal with suspected drug use or manufacture on their farms are being encouraged to attend a workshop in Ashburton this month.

The workshop is one of five being organised around the country by Federated Farmers and being jointly hosted by The Drug Detection Agency and rural insurer FMG. Federated Farmers says while law changes are on the way to better handle issues around meth-contamination of tenanted dwellings, the workshops are aimed at helping farmers nip drug problems in the bud.

They will raise vigilance around suspected drug use and manufacture, and give farmers and other employers advice on the appropriate way to deal with employment matters where drug use is suspected or confirmed.

It has been reported that in some centres, P – a drug that can have devastating consequences – was becoming easier to obtain than cannabis.

Included in the discussions will be tips on the risk signs to look out for in and around properties and with unusual staff behaviour, the need for regular property inspections, and drug testing procedures.

Farmers want to keep their own families, their workers and their stock safe and drug manufacture and abuse poses a significant

health and safety risk.

Federated Farmers healthy and safety spokesperson Katie Milne said the organisation was running these workshops because this was an issue that was now top of mind for many farmers.

“It’s great we can work with FMG and TDDA to try and get on top of this problem.”

The isolation of farmhouse buildings, which may be rented out, makes them a popular place for P-labs.

Building and Construction Minister Nick Smith said the Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill (No.2) introduced to Parliament late last month makes a number of practical changes, including better managing methamphetamine contamination.

The bill recognised that meth-contamination of properties had become a significant issue that needed clearer direction, he said.

“We want homes to be safe but we also don’t want properties being vacated when the risks are low.”

Ashburton police said earlier this month that rural businesses should drug test their workers after Cantabrians were identified as the second highest consumers of methamphetamine in the country.

The Ashburton workshop will be on June 13, at the Hotel Ashburton, from 11am-2pm.

Dairy product prices rise for sixth time in row Dairy product prices inched higher at the Global Dairy Trade auction, rising for the sixth consecutive time.

The GDT price index added 0.6 per cent from the previous auction three weeks ago to $US3395. Some 22,004 tonnes of product was sold, up from 21,236 tonnes at the previous auction.

However, whole milk powder fell, declining 2.9 per cent to $US3143 a tonne.

The price of an August shipment of regular grade WMP fell 6.9 per cent, much more than the 3.1 per cent fall that was factored in by the NZX Dairy Derivatives market, according to AgriHQ dairy analyst Susan Kilsby. At the latest GDT auction, cheddar jumped 14.5 per cent to $US4285 a tonne, while skim milk powder rallied 7.9 per cent to $US2156 a tonne.

Cheddar posted its second highest gain

since this commodity started trading on GDT in July 2011.

Butter milk powder climbed 5.8 per cent to $US2092 a tonne, while rennet casein gained 4.8 per cent to $US6849 a tonne.

Butter rose 3.3 per cent to $US5631 a tonne, while lactose advanced 1 per cent to $US971 a tonne. Bucking the trend, anhydrous milk fat slipped 1.2 per cent to $US6569 a tonne.

Steel & Tube faces charges over mesh

By Tina Morrison Steel & Tube Holdings is facing 29 court charges of making false and misleading representations about its steel mesh product SE62.

The Commerce Commission filed the charges in the Auckland District Court under the Fair Trading Act, relating to conduct between March 1, 2012, and April 6, 2016, the Wellington-based regulator said in a statement.

Steel & Tube has been cooperating with the commission throughout the investigation and is working with the regulator to reach an appropriate resolution of the charges, the Lower Hutt-based company said in a statement to the stock exchange.

The regulator started its investigation in August 2015 after a complaint was laid about the steel mesh, which is used in housing and driveway construction, not meeting the standards required in New Zealand.

The commission signed enforceable undertakings in late April 2016 with Steel & Tube that the company would only sell SE62 500E grade steel mesh that passed specific independent testing.

The undertakings were also imposed on other companies.

The commission said today that the charges allege Steel & Tube made misleading representations on their batch tags, batch test certificates, advertising collateral and website that SE62 was 500E grade steel, when it was not.

The charges also allege that false and misleading representations were made by Steel & Tube that SE62 steel mesh had been independently tested and certified, when it had not.

This included using the logo of an independent testing laboratory on SE62 test certificates when the product had not been tested by the laboratory.

Charges were also filed earlier this year against Timber King Ltd and NZ Steel Distributor Ltd in relation to false and misleading representations about 500E steel mesh.

These companies have entered guilty pleas and will be sentenced in court in August. The commission said it expects to lay charges against one other company, and investigations continue into an additional company.

By Tina Morrison The volume of New Zealand’s manufacturing sales fell for a second straight quarter in the first three months of this year, but the values rose due to higher prices.

The volumes of total manufacturing sales fell a seasonally adjusted 0.3 per cent in the March quarter, compared with the December quarter when they dropped 2 per cent, Statistics New Zealand said. The value of manufacturing sales rose a seasonally adjusted 2.8 per cent, following a 1.3 per cent increase three months earlier.

Meat and dairy product manufacturing led the decline in volumes in the latest quarter, falling 7.8 percent, although the sales

values for those commodities increased 1.1 percent. Excluding meat and dairy product manufacturing, sales volumes rose 1.7 percent, while values increased 3.5 per cent.

New Zealand’s manufacturing sector has been in almost continuous expansion since October 2012.

However, over the longer-term, manufacturing has declined as a percentage of the economy, from about 26 per cent of gross domestic production 40 years ago to about 13 per cent in 2009.

The trend for the total manufacturing sales volume, which gives a longer-term picture of movements, has been mainly rising since mid-2013 but now appears to be easing.

Of the 13 manufacturing industries measured, volumes of seven rose in the latest quarter, while five fell and one remained unchanged. Petroleum and coal product manufacturing volumes increased 5.7 per cent, while chemical, polymer and rubber product manufacturing rose 7 per cent.

In terms of the value of manufacturing sales, chemical, polymer and rubber manufacturing increased 9.8 per cent, while petroleum and coal product manufacturing rose 9.7 per cent.

The volume of finished goods stocks, which is not seasonally adjusted, was 1.6 per cent higher in the first quarter of this year than the same period a year earlier, Stats NZ said.

Vodafone acts against fake news sites Vodafone New Zealand is acting to prevent its advertising appearing on websites promoting “hate speech” or “fake news”.

The move specifically targets automated advertising technologies in which sites, such as Google or Facebook, use algorithms to place ads where customers desired by the advertiser can see them.

However, while a “powerful” and largely effective tool, automated advertising can also lead to Vodafone’s ads appearing next to offensive messages incompatible with its brand, the company said.

“Additionally, automated advertising technologies can have the effect of generating revenue for outlets focused on hate

speech and fake news,” it said.

To prevent this, Vodafone now requires third parties and website owners to “take all measures necessary” to stop its advertising appearing on hate speech and fake news outlets.

It defines these as sites predominantly aimed at degrading women or vulnerable minorities and misleading readers by pre-

senting news that had no credible primary source as fact-based.

Vodafone’s move comes amid fears “fake news” attacks influenced the recent US presidential election.

Vodafone New Zealand consumer director Matt Williams said it is fortunate New Zealand’s media landscape has not been affected by a rise in hate speech and fake news outlets seen in other markets the company works in.

“Vodafone has a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion; we also greatly value the integrity of the democratic processes and institutions that are often the targets of purveyors of fake news,” group chief executive Vittorio Colao said.

■ Add the rice and stir to coat the grains with the butter mixture.

Then add the wine and allow to bubble and reduce before adding the warm chicken stock.

Cover.

■ Bake for 20 minutes until the rice is just tender. Remove from

the oven.

■ Add the spinach, parmesan cheese, lemon zest and chicken to the pan. Stir gently to combine, season to taste and then cover and leave to sit for 5 minutes.

■ Serve with the extra grated parmesan cheese.

‘Tried and true’ likely

Tour revives memories

In Grant McCrea’s home sits a briefcase containing a treasuretrove of family rugby memorabilia, dating back three generations.

McCrea’s collection includes items such as a book on the history of Canterbury rugby, which is signed by former All Black, Andrew Mehrtens.

The book includes a passage on his grandfather, Gordon Day, and his heroics to help win the Ranfurly Shield for Canterbury.

The most poignant memorabilia however, are the items relating to his father, Noel McCrea, who played against the British and Irish Lions in 1950.

“He played in the front row for the team, but I can’t remember much else,” McCrea said.

After previously playing for the New Zealand Army rugby side whilst serving, Noel returned to Ashburton to work for the power board, as well as play for the Mid

Canterbury/North Otago combined side against the Lions.

McCrea said he was looking forward to watching the upcoming matches in the tour, especially the tests between the All Blacks and the Lions, as well as the match against the Crusaders.

“The players come from all around and don’t often play together which is why it has such a big following,” he said.

“Also, they don’t come out here very often.

“If they came here more it wouldn’t have as big a following.”

Part of McCrea’s collection includes his father’s tie from the Lions tour, as well as his own personal tie from his time spent playing rugby in South Africa.

The suitcase also bears the scars of McCrea’s time in South Africa.

“The two holes that are on the case are from when some people fired a gun at me while I was there,” he said.

It will be the tried and true when Steve Hansen picks his men today to play the British and Irish Lions later this month.

More and more no matter how good or how poor a player has been in Super Rugby, he will still be left out or included.

Hansen knows, or thinks he knows, who can turn it on at the highest level and it is hard to argue against him after the record he has fashioned since he took over the team in 2012.

And the Super Rugby competition is so weak these days it is hard to get a gauge on form.

Obviously the injury issue hangs over the squad like James Comey’s shadow lurks behind the big man in Washington.

And let’s not even raise concussion. It seems every day some new rugby player has been struck down by headaches.

Expect a few extra names to be included in the squad today.

The usual suspects pick themselves out wide and there should be some room for Jordie Barrett, although it should be noted he has looked a million dollars against such average sides as the Rebels and the Brumbies. Against the Crusaders he looked more Ford Anglia than Ferrari. - NZME

Age Concern Ashburton Age Concern extend a cordial invitation to all interested parties to an Ageing Well Forum, 1.30-3.30pm on Friday June 16 at the Seniors Centre, 206 Cameron Street.

David Boyle from the Commission of Financial Capability and Nicola Sladden, New Zealand Banking Ombudsman, will join with Simon Templeton, CEO of Age Concern Canterbury to present information on financial management in retirement, avoidance of scams and frauds, and Age Concern’s Elder Abuse contract with the Ministry of Social Development.

Refreshments will be served at the conclusion.

We are pleased to report a very successful Confident Driving Course last month with Yvonne Palmer from Christchurch.

Age Concern’s 206 Club members celebrated the Queen’s Birthday Weekend complete with pearls, gloves, hats and bone china teacup ensembles.

A very festive atmosphere pervading for those three days of last week.

The Wednesday morning Hip Hop for Seniors is up and running very well at the Balmoral Hall, as are Thursday morning low impact exercises for lades with Frank Connelly.

Ashburton Club & MSA Golf Section Queens Birthday has come and gone but from around the South Island Chartered Club Golfers bravely played on in very wet conditions for Sunday play in our first Mixed Tournament held at the Tinwald Golf Club.

My partner Rodney and I played on in very heavy rain as Steve Campbell from the Woolston Club (in our four) had a hole in one on the 12th which was a highlight.

When we finally finished our round all I could think of was Eliza Doolittle singing “a room somewhere, warm face warm hands, warm feet owh wouldn’t it be lovely.”

It was a very successful weekend with positive plans from the Kaiapoi Club who will be hosts for the 2019 bi-annual mixed Tournament Contesting the Max Fitzgerald Memorial Trophy for the first time, it was won by Lindsay Jackson and Kay Fox from the Ashburton MSA combined score over the two days of 221, followed by Grant and Sharon Cronin Invercargill 224 K Campbell and M McDonald Woolston 226 M Adams and R Adams Kaiapoi 227 M Goodall and J Goodall Invercargill 230.

Ross McDonald Electrical and John Glendining Specialised Electrical Services were major sponsors of hole No 6 which made it a good challenge for all golfers.

The Rakaia Ladies had another amazing win in the Vets Pennants, playing Lower Waitaki at Geraldine on the May 26. This is the second year in a row that they have won the shield.

Aorangi Golf The Women’s Silver Pennant Final was played at Geraldine Golf Club.

Conditions were calm but chilly and a very exciting match between Mayfield v Gleniti went right down to the wire with three out of the four games won on the 18 Hole.

After the four singles and two four balls the score was three games all so and extra hole was played in which Jan Clucas slotted a crucial putt to win the the following Saturday to a damp morning to the Domain to enjoy all that this fabulous facility has to offer.

Mid Canterbury Lions Club At the recent Lions Clubs Zone Meeting held at Rakaia representatives from the seven Mid Canterbury Lions Clubs were present.

CEO of the Maia Health Foundation, Michael Flatman updated members on progress on the Acute Services Building currently under construction at Christchurch Hospital.

Maia Health Foundation, which was launched in May 2016 to raise funds for the Canterbury health system, is currently fundraising for the enhancement and provision of a new rooftop helipad at Christchurch Hospital.

Christchurch Hospital is New Zealand’s largest trauma centre and transfers to the hospital by helicopter, from emergencies and patient transfers, are increasing.

Last year approximately 800 missions were flown, an increase of about 40 per cent over the last three years.

This continued increase means a larger helipad is needed if it is to be fit for purpose.

Currently helicopters land in Hagley Park and patients are transferred to Christchurch Hospital via ambulance, a process that takes on average 13 minutes.

A rooftop helipad means patients will receive faster access to emergency care and a larger helipad will provide capacity to cope with future growth in helicopter transfer numbers.

The helipad will also feature a rooftop clinical support unit beside it, enabling the delivery of lifesaving measures immediately after the helicopter touches down.

The helipad enhancements will cost $2 million.

Michael spoke to the Zone meeting in September last year outlining the fund raising objectives.

In addition to the helipad fundraising project, a second project involves the enhancement of the Hospital’s planned new Child Health facilities by adding contemporary facilities for children of all ages.

The Foundation proposes to add indoor play areas, activity rooms, a school room, enhanced parent facilities, child appropriate theming and décor and entertainment systems.

He advised that these enhancements will cost $3.2 million.

The information was taken back to the clubs and it is very pleasing to report that they supported the idea of the helipad and have given very generous donations.

Representatives from six of the clubs (Ashburton County, Ashburton Pakeke, Hinds, Mayfield, Methven and Rakaia Lions Clubs) presented Michael with cheques totalling $20,600.00.

Methven Lions donated some of the proceeds from their Mt Hutt Open Day held in March; the other clubs donated fundraising money from their Charitable Trusts.

Raiders keep combo Joey Leilua’s lethal combination with Jordan Rapana is set to terrorise NRL defences for at least two more seasons after the damaging centre re-signed with Canberra until the end of 2020.

Race organisers blasted America’s Cup commentator Peter Lester has accused Oracle of foul play in forcing the challengers to race in unsafe conditions.

In the wake of Team New Zealand’s dramatic capsize in more than 20 knots of wind, Lester – a two-time New Zealand yachtsman of the year – hit out at Australian race director Iain Murray.

Lester said that he intends putting the heat on Murray in this morning’s race briefing in Bermuda, but he also had Oracle Team USA in his sights.

He also hinted defenders Oracle, who in effect run the regatta, with Russell Coutts in charge, would be delighted at watching the challengers beat themselves up in rough conditions.

“In my mind [the wind speed] was above the upper limit, the boats shouldn’t have been racing,” said Lester. “The damage done to all the teams is substantial.

“I’m critical ... at the race management meeting tomorrow, I’ll be asking some pertinent questions to the race director, Iain Murray.

“What the rules say is they can race up to 24 knots and that’s a sample average wind, taken from eight minutes to three minutes before the start.

“When we were briefed before the regatta, Iain made it very clear to us he has the final say and, of course, safety comes into this.

“Clearly, today, the safety of the crew was really compromised.

“Our guys dodged a bullet, there are one or two bumps and bruises, and a few stitches, but someone could have been really badly hurt.

“The regatta has got off lightly.”

Lester also alleged Oracle Team USA may be influencing Murray in his decision-making, although a change in governance structure for this event has separated race management from the event authority.

While the race director has previously answered to the authority – in this case, defenders Oracle – but Murray now officially reports to all teams.

None of the challenger helmsmen were publicly critical of

Murray after yesterday’s racing, accepting that racing took place within limits they had agreed to.

Lester was less forgiving.

“Where is it all coming from?

“Again the event authority ... remember Oracle are sitting in the shed over here,” he said.

“What went on today, in my mind, Oracle will not be unhappy about.

“The challengers are out there, beating themselves up, doing damage to their boats.

“That does not help the challengers against the defenders, when it comes to the America’s Cup and I think Iain Murray is accountable.

“I am fearful ... the forecast for tomorrow is for more wind than today. If that is the case, the forecast is for more wind or the same as today, they shouldn’t be out there – it’s dangerous.”

Reporting from the wing shed, he said: “What’s been impressive since the boat came in ... the boat builders and engineers are going through the boat to really make sure they are dealing with

Designer blames Team New Zealand for capsize Legendary British yacht designer Hugh Welbourn has strongly criticised Team New Zealand over their America’s Cup spill, describing it as “careless”.

Welbourn also claimed Peter Burling and Team NZ has “shot themselves in the foot” with an

over aggressive start that has cast their campaign into doubt.

“That was very careless,” asserted Welbourn who is considered one of world yachting’s most innovative designers and an expert on the speciality of using foils on monohulls.

Welbourn said Team NZ has been brought unstuck by the wake created by Ben Ainslie Racing after it beat the Kiwis in a prestart game of cat-and-mouse.

“They should know not to run into another set of foils’ wake at a shallow angle,” he said.

Gordon Strachan has stressed the importance of Scottish solidarity ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifier against England at Hampden Park on Saturday. Top trotters face off

By Michael Guerin It is a bit like asking a parent which one of their kids they love more.

So you can forgive trainer Greg Hope for taking an awfully long pause before answering what might be the question of the trotting season.

Because the battle for Trotter of the Year as the annual awards in August will come down to a pair of horses – both trained by Hope and his wife Nina – who have had wildly contrasting seasons.

In one corner is undoubtedly New Zealand’s best trotter Monbet, who only raced three times this season and won them all.

More importantly two of those wins were of the highest quality, national records in both the Dominion and NZ Free-For-All during Cup week before niggles ruled him out for the season.

In the other corner is his less talented, but in the contest of this season better performed, three-year-old stablemate Enghien, like Monbet a son of French stallion Love You. He has raced nine times, winning eight and only beaten in the other because he galloped.

To add to his case he has won every race that matters, the two trotting derbies, the Harness Jewels and the group two Sires’ Stakes as well as the Sales Series.

His domination has been compete and utter and even though driver Ricky May couldn’t give him his head on Saturday because he wasn’t trotting faultlessly, he still won.

Enghien’s season is far from finished, with two more group ones in Victoria on the horizon.

“We are definitely heading there because there isn’t a lot

for them as four-year-olds so we might as well take what we can get now,” said Hope.

“So he will contest a Breeders Crown heat here at Addington, then go to the Victoria Derby in August and then Breeders Crown final at the end of that month.”

Victory in either or both of those won’t aid Enghien’s bid for Trotter of the Year as the awards are voted on by the media before his Australian campaign begins.

So the question will be: do three wins at the highest level, the last of them recorded by Monbet

in November, trump eight wins from nine starts spread from the heat of December to the chill of June?

“Its a tough question,” says Hope, who simply doesn’t want to answer it.

“I mean, I think we all know Monbet is the best trotter in the country and Enghien isn’t in his class yet. But I also suppose trotter of the year isn’t about the best horse but the best season.

“If it was about the best horse then Monbet has to get it.

“But if it is about the best sea-

son then it is hard to argue with what Enghien has done.”

Enghien’s win capped a remarkable last two seasons for the Hopes, with their future trainer and chief statistician son Ben telling Dad something he didn’t know.

“After that win on Saturday we have now trained the winner at least once of all the major trotting races for young horses we had have a starter in for in the last couple of years.

“That means the derbies, the Sires’ Stakes, Sales Series and now all three Jewels.

“We needed the three-year-old Jewels because Monbet finished second in that so Enghien completed the set. Ben keeps on top of these things so that’s kinda cool to have done that.”

Hope says while the training is a family affair, some of the credit for their rapid rise to the top of trotting has to go to stallion Love You. “He has been huge for us and I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves.”

Love You also sired Saturday’s two-year-old trot winner Paramount King and the runner-up in the four-year-old trot in Gentleman Sir. - HRNZ

Potential swansong for Katie Keeninsky seven-year-old mare Katie McKeen could be lining up for her last race at her home track at New Plymouth today.

The Gary McBeth-trained runner will be backing up after her disappointing run in the Listed Wanganui Cup on Saturday.

McBeth said the mare just hasn’t come right since returning from an enforced spell last year.

“She hurt a tendon before her last race last year.

“That’s okay now, but I’m struggling to get her right.

“She got away from me in the summer, she got too fat and I’ve been struggling to get it off her.

“She’s well enough in herself, it’s just she might have lost the spirit to win.”

McBeth said it may be her last race depending on how she runs, with a view to breeding from the eight-time winning mare this coming season.

“We’ll find out tomorrow, we’ll do our best and see how she goes.”

Meanwhile, McBeth said he was delighted with her stablemate Sakura’s standout win at Wanganui on Saturday.

The Mr Nancho mare ran very wide for the majority of the race and still scored by nearly twolengths over runner-up Blackgam-

mon and McBeth said she was better out there and staying out of trouble.

“She drew fifteen, so she was going to be fairly wide. She has been wide in her last three races and still done well.

“She’s a horse that if she got a little bit of a check when she’s in close it takes a while for her to get back into her stride again. So probably over that distance she’s mostly better out of trouble.”

McBeth said he will continue racing Sakura over the winter months with her next start likely to be at Tauranga later this month.

Sport Controversial tenure over John Grant won’t seek another term as Australian Rugby League Commissioner, with his tenure to end in February 2018. Grant’s time in the role has been underpinned by a bitter funding dispute with NRL clubs, some of which have been pushing for his removal. Grant, who was appointed as the inaugural ARLC chairman in 2012, said his decision to leave would support the body’s planning for the future. “All well-run organisations need time to properly plan for the future and my decision, at this time, assists this”, Grant said.

Students from schools around Mid Canterbury battled it out yesterday at the Mid Canterbury Primary Schools’ Cross-Country.

More than 300 students in Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 took to the course at the Ashburton Showgrounds.

Co-ordinator Brooke Morshuis said the course had been mixed up this year, with hay bales added to make it “not just running in a manicured paddock”.

“This year the kids are starting in front of the grandstand, so they can hear all the supporters, which is great,” she said.

Year 7 and 8 students completed three laps of the course, which is 3km in total, while Year 5 and 6 students ran two laps, or 2km.

Students that placed in the top six of their race will have the chance to run at the Canterbury Cross Country Championships, which will be held at the

Halswell Quarry on June 21.

“We have had huge support from the community, they have really got behind it,” said Morshuis.

“Without help from the harriers’ club and a local farmer who donated all the fencing and hay bales, we wouldn’t have been able to do it.”

Realising her potential Swiss No.1 Timea Bacsinszky was clinical in overcoming French star Kristina Mladenovic in difficult conditions to reach her second French Open semi-final yesterday. The former junior star could finally be reaching her potential at age 27. “We had everything today, a hurricane and sand storms, nice weather, and almost snow ... it was really complicated to stay focused ... I’m really sorry to have knocked out the penultimate French representation.”

College looking to build on unbeaten run

Ashburton College will get the chance to really hammer home their early advantage in the Mid Canterbury netball premier competition when they take on Methven tonight at the EA Networks Centre.

With two wins from two matches thus far, and as the only side to have an unbeaten record, the Ash Coll girls are in the perfect position to really put their competition rivals under the pump if they can get the maximum result against the defending champions in tonight’s battle.

With wins over Hampstead and Celtic next to their name, the Ashburton College side is in full control with matches against Methven, Southern and United all fixtures they should go close to winning in their current form.

But they will be wary of the threat that the talented Methven squad possesses.

Comprehensively beaten by United, Methven turned that performance around to beat Southern by five goals last weekend and will be hoping to carry that form through to tonight.

Celtic got things back on track

after their surprise defeat to Ash Coll two weeks ago with a strong win last week, but face a tough challenge tonight in their match against Hampstead who are more than capable of producing a stunning performance.

Tonight’s third clash will see the still winless Southern take on United, a game which both sides will have targeted as a must-win affair.

Smashed by Hampstead, the Southern ladies were a lot better against Methven and will be keen to see more improvement when they take to the court tonight.

United were beaten 33-19 last week by Celtic after their massive win over Methven the week before.

Consistency has been their key issue, but with a more complete effort this week they could be looking at maximum points which will see them right up in the top two of three teams in the competition.

In lower grade action tonight, Southern B and Celtic B will square off while Hampstead B faces Celtic C. Ashburton College B and Rakaia will do battle in the third match of the round.

New coach for Phoenix Bosnian-Swiss coach Darije Kalezic and his assistant Rado Vidosic have been announced as the new team in charge of Wellington Phoenix. The pair take over from Des Buckingham and Chris Greenacre, whose contracts were not renewed at the end of the Phoenix’s A-League campaign, which saw the club finish seventh. After a playing career in Bosnia and the Netherlands, the 47-year-old Kalezic has had managerial stints in the Netherlands, Belgium, England and Saudi Pro League club Al-Taawoun.
