The biggest settlement in New Zealand employment history is about to be ratified, and Mid Canterbury care and support workers could not be happier. As of July 1, their pay rate will increase to between $19 to $23.50 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience, rising to a top rate of $27 over the next five years. With many having been confined to life on the minimum wage or slightly above, the deal means their work, and their commitment to those they care

for, is finally being valued. The landmark deal, to cost $2.06 billion over five years, has been negotiated with the Government by union E tu, after resthome worker Kristine Bartlett mounted a legal challenge around equal pay obligations. E tu organiser Coral Hodgson led ratification meetings in Ashburton yesterday, and told 33 home support workers at Ashburton Hospital that Bartlett had done more for women than suffragette Kate Sheppard and a $27 note should be printed with her on it. Most of the support workers in at-

tendance were employed by the Canterbury District Health Board, and as such are on a collective contract which offers better pay rates than most other home support employers. Nevertheless they, alongside fellow home support workers and carers in residential aged care and disability support, are set to benefit.
