The biggest settlement in New Zealand employment history is about to be ratified, and Mid Canterbury care and support workers could not be happier.

As of July 1, their pay rate will increase to between $19 to $23.50 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience, rising to a top rate of $27 over the next five years.

With many having been confined to life on the minimum wage or slightly above, the deal means their work, and their commitment to those they care

for, is finally being valued.

The landmark deal, to cost $2.06 billion over five years, has been negotiated with the Government by union E tu, after resthome worker Kristine Bartlett mounted a legal challenge around equal pay obligations.

E tu organiser Coral Hodgson led ratification meetings in Ashburton yesterday, and told 33 home support workers at Ashburton Hospital that Bartlett had done more for women than suffragette Kate Sheppard and a $27 note should be printed with her on it.

Most of the support workers in at-

tendance were employed by the Canterbury District Health Board, and as such are on a collective contract which offers better pay rates than most other home support employers.

Nevertheless they, alongside fellow home support workers and carers in residential aged care and disability support, are set to benefit.

Youth Council presents Bite Night tonight Baring Square East will become a hub for entertainment and festivities tonight when the Ashburton Youth Council (AYC) hosts its first Bite Nite event.

Food trucks will line the square serving tasty treats, giveaways will be on offer as well as performers from the Court Theatre Company providing improvised comedy.

AYC chairperson Alyce Lysaght said, not only would it be a fun activity for young people and families, but money raised at Bite Nite will be donated to local youth organisation, 24/7 Youth Work.

“We are so excited to present this event and hope to see the community turning out for a great night,” she said.

The event is being made possible with funding from the Ministry of Youth Development.

“As the event will be held at the start of winter, we encourage people to wrap up warm or bring a blanket,” she said.

“We’ll also have a photo booth full of props for people to take fun snaps in so they can take home a small piece of Bite Nite.”

Bite Nite will run from 5.30pm until 7.30pm at Baring Square East tonight. Entry will be a gold coin donation.

Second air pollution breach

Ashburton has recorded its second winter air pollution breach in recent weeks.

The health-based concentration guideline was exceeded on Saturday, June 3, with a 24 hour average concentration of 52 micrograms

of suspended particulate per cubic metre of air, measured at the monitoring site in Cambridge St, exceeding the particular matter limit of 50PM 10, Environment Canterbury reported.

On May 26 air pollution in the town was recorded at 57PM 10.

SFF resource centre being well utilised

A resource centre set up by Silver Fern Farms to assist displaced workers from the company’s Fairton sheep meat processing plant has been well utilised, and today’s job expo is expected to be well supported.

The centre opened in the Sinclair Centre on Thursday (June 1) following an announcement the plant was to be permanently closed last Wednesday.

About 370 workers were made redundant.

Representatives from agencies such as IRD and Work and Income and employment specialists have been made available to offer support and advice.

By lunchtime on its first day in operation about 30 people had visited the centre, and there has been a steady stream since, Silver Fern Farms chief executive

Dean Hamilton said.

“There has been interest from our Fairton people in the roles available at our Pareora plant,” he said.

“All services at the resource centre that are assisting with the transition and change have been useful, we know that WINZ and IRD have helped with questions and advice.”

Up to 18 employers will attend today’s job expo, including a number of local businesses and organisations from around the Canterbury region.

“We’d like to see all of our people who want to be in work, are in work and this is a great opportunity to engage with a range of employers,” Hamilton said.

Today’s job expo will open at 9am and run through to 4pm.

The resource centre will remain open until 4pm on Friday.

No appointments are necessary.

Equal pay on its way for support workers From P1 Currently workers are voting on the settlement at meetings around the country, and it will be passed into law if a majority vote is received. All of the workers at the hospital meeting voted to accept the settlement.

The settlement will end all equal pay claims made prior to July 1.

Among those at yesterday’s meeting was 30-year-old Lisa Moodie, a single woman who was currently a boarder and could not afford to rent or buy a house despite working full-time.

She had worked in the care industry since leaving Ashburton College, including at an Ashburton rest home, and now home support.

“It means long-term I should be able to pay a mortgage on my own home and save up for a deposit,” Moodie said.

Her colleague Sharon Brown, 56, had also worked in the industry since leaving school. She was full-time and had brought her son up while working night and day shifts, and she had worked in rest homes, special needs

and disability support.

She said home support work was varied, with workers having to offer not only physical assistance but also emotional and mental health support and palliative care.

“We don’t do it for the money,” Brown said.

Brown and Moodie were qualified to Level 3 aged care, and were happy with another aspect of the settlement, that employers would be required to provide the necessary support for staff to gain a Level 4 qualification.

Care with fires outdoors urged by Rakaia Gorge local A former caretaker of the Rakaia Gorge camping ground is reminding people not to light fires in the area.

The woman said she noticed a group of about six people lighting a small camp fire on the river bed

at the edge of the camping ground on Monday afternoon. She had happened to be in the area at the time, staying at a nearby property.

Later in the afternoon she noticed the people had left and the fire was still going. She went over

to the area and put it out with about 10 buckets of water that she got from the river.

She said the area had a lot of pine needles and dry vegetation, so it was important not to light fires there.

The Ashburton District Council was not able to provide any additional information yesterday, with representatives away on a training course, other than to refer to its fire season status information on its website.

In brief Weekend accidents One person has died in a two-car crash on State Highway 1 in South Canterbury, the third road death over Queen’s Birthday weekend.

Emergency services were called to the collision on Monday evening. It follows two other road deaths over the long weekend. On Saturday, a person died and a baby was flown to hospital after a car crashed in the Gisborne District. On Friday night, a pedestrian was killed in a collision with a car north of Napier Airport. Last year there were eight fatal crashes over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, resulting in 11 deaths, which was the worst total for the holiday weekend in 27 years.

Fire damaged home to open to public

Auckland is set to become a cleaner, greener city over the next three years with the planting of one million trees. Mayor Phil Goff launched the Million Trees programme yesterday. He also revealed the city’s prison inmates and those sentenced to community work are set to do much of the backbreaking planting. Inmates will also be able to gain formal qualifications in horticulture as part of the programme. Auckland Council hopes 170,000 seedlings can be planted during the programme’s first year.

A Methven house extensively damaged in a blaze last month will be opened up to the public on Sunday afternoon.

The New Zealand Fire Service is holding an open home at the property 1.30pm to 3pm, so people can learn how to prevent fires and escape from them.

Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade chief Selwyn Allred said brigade members had approached the homeowner, who had been more than happy with the idea.

“We thought it would be a good opportunity to show people. You see the ads on TV but this is a good chance to show it a bit more first hand, just how

quick and how fierce a fire can grow,” Allred said.

Visitors will be taken through the house and shown significant points of interest, such as where and how the fire started, how damage could have been reduced and the impact of smoke and flames.

The couple who own the modern three-bedroom brick home,

on Spaxton Street, escaped the house and phoned emergency services as the blaze took hold on May 15 around 5pm.

Fire brigade personnel reported afterwards that the owner of the home had gone to do some grocery shopping and when he returned noticed a couch near the logburner was starting to burn.

Wrestlers to converge on Methven

About 20 top wrestlers from throughout New Zealand will converge on Methven next month, offering high powered entertainment to raise funds for two local schools.

Aftershock Pro Wrestling (APW) will present Mountain Mayhem, a seven-match card including two title matches, July 8, at the Mount Hutt Memorial Hall.

Three of the wrestlers were in Methven on Sunday night for the turning on the lights ceremony held in the town, and gave a taste of what they would bring at the event.

Kris Griffiths, with the wrestling name Stan Murdoch, said he had recently taken over APW based in Christchurch, and one of his aims was to get out to the regions more, so an opportunity like this to perform in Methven was perfect.

He and Simon Neilson, with the wrestling name Simon Seven, were both members of the Southern Wrecking Crew team, and as such were looking forward to being mean and rough to take out the competition.

Islamic families must clean house, Peters says Winston Peters has told parliament New Zealand’s Islamic communities “must clean house” and it should start with their own families.

He was speaking yesterday after Deputy Prime Minister Paula Bennett had introduced a resolution condemning the terrorist attacks in Manchester and offering condolences to the families of the victims.

Peters said it was known that two of the perpetrators arrived in Britain as immigrants.

“Families, friends and confidantes are turning the other cheek rather than turning these people in,” he said.

“Our Islamic communities must clean house by turning these monsters in and it starts with their own families.”

“It is we who must change, they say, not them ... we must halt the slide and lead as a country before we in this country see a repeat of these attacks.”

The resolution was unanimously adopted.

700 athletes enjoy a weekend The South Island Filipino Games tournament attracted more than 700 athletes and their supporters to Ashburton over the weekend for another successful and competitive event. A range of sports were held at locations around town, including the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre, BBMC Stadium, Ashburton College, RSA Ashburton and the EA Networks Centre. This year, events included on the line-up were basketball (seniors and under-23), volleyball, badminton, table tennis, lawn tennis, billiards, darts and chess.

Animal activists Safe believes calf roping should be banned from rodeos.

Warning as calves given shock treatment

By Danica MacLean An animal handler at the Mid Northern Rodeo has been formally warned after footage showed young calves being shocked with a electric prod.

The footage was captured by Anti-Rodeo Action NZ at the rodeo on January 14 and 15 this year and prompted an investigation by the Ministry for Primary Industries.

Ministry animal welfare compliance manager Chris Rodwell said they investigated the man’s use of a prod on calves under a year old and on older cattle.

“We have issued this person – a voluntary rodeo participant who has been involved in rodeo for around 35 years, is elderly and has no criminal history – with a formal warning.”

He said the offending was at the lower end of the scale.

The rodeo code of welfare states electric prod must not be used on animals other than adult cattle.

Mr Rodwell said alternative approaches to prodding were available and they were confident there was no reason to believe he would not comply in the future. “We also concluded that the rodeo committee was not complicit in this individual’s actions.”

Animal activists Safe welcomed the warning but said it was not enough.

Safe campaigns director Mandy Carter said the ministry must take urgent action to prohibit rodeo events, starting with calf

roping. “This kind of treatment of those who most need our protection cannot be allowed to continue.”

She said in calf roping, young calves are chased, wrenched off their feet by ropes, slammed into the ground and have their legs tied together. “Even worse, at the Mid Northern Rodeo they were goaded with painful electric shocks before entering the arena.”

NZ Rodeo Cowboys Association national spokesman Michael Laws said their understanding was that the man misinterpreted the rules and that evidence was accepted by the authorities. “An error of judgment was made, an investigation completed and a satisfactory outcome arrived at.

“Despite some media mischief and some degree of provocation, NZ Rodeo considers that lessons have been absorbed and learned.”

He said rodeo remained a very popular family entertainment with a strong welfare code, repeatedly endorsed by academic studies and scientific research.

“There is no sport in which 100 per cent of participants get it right 100 per cent of the time.”

He said there was no sanction, outside the warning, which prevented the man being involved next year.

Mr Laws said they fully supported and endorsed the rodeo code of welfare and said this incident proved it was working well.

Turnbull demands answers Yacqub Khayre was a violent criminal, a terribly-behaved prisoner, and a one-time terror suspect with known links to extremists.

After serving time for a violent crime and having his parole eligibility date pushed back due to “poor behaviour” behind bars, the 29-year-old was released on parole last year, having to adhere to strict terms and conditions.

Still, on Monday, he was able to lure a female escort to meet him at a bayside Melbourne hotel, shoot dead a man who worked at the serviced apartment block when he arrived, hold the woman hostage, then start a gunfight with counterterror officers and shoot three before being gunned down.

As Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull put it, there are “very, very grave questions” to be answered over why this dangerous man was able to carry out this attack, which police are treating as an act of terrorism, in the name of Islamic State and al-Qaeda.

Victorian Police commissioner Graham Ashton yesterday confirmed the man behind the fatal Brighton siege had been on parole at the time of the incident.

“He is someone that was known to us as having a long criminal history, a whole range of offending going back many years.”

Khayre had come to the attention of New South Wales police and the Australian Federal Police back in 2009 when he was charged over a terror plot targeting Holsworthy barracks.

If not thwarted, the terrorism attack could have seen high numbers of Australian Defence personnel killed at the Sydney army base.

Khayre was acquitted of charges over that attack, but was known to have had links to the Somalia-based IS-linked terror group that the plot was traced back to.

Since walking from the

Holsworthy trial in 2010, he had been convicted with “a whole range of offending”, and had spent about two years in a youth justice centre for between 42 and 45 offences, including multiple burglaries, assault and drug possession.

During his time in youth detention he was sentenced for stabbing a man on a train, demanding money.

Documents reveal Khayre came to Australia via a Kenyan refugee camp with his grandparents and had a “difficult” relationship with his parents who later followed.

Khayre didn’t finish school,

was “seriously” abusing drugs and alcohol and started committing offences, the documents show.

In sentencing Khayre for a 2012 aggravated burglary, Judge Felicity Hampel questioned whether he would be able to reform.

“It would appear that each time you have been released from custody, you have rapidly turned back to drug abuse, and nothing has been put to me to indicate that you demonstrate any will or commitment to address it,” she said. “This unfortunately, is not your last matter before a court.”

Theft of hero’s wedding ring ‘heartless’ When police caught up with George Tschaggeny, they say he was wearing the wedding ring of a man fatally stabbed on a Portland train widely hailed as a hero for trying to aid two teen passengers.

That hero, Ricky Best, a 53-year-old Army veteran and father of four, will be buried

this week. Tschaggeny, 53, will be arraigned on charges of second-degree theft, tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse in the second degree.

Police say Tschaggeny, who is homeless, removed Best’s wedding ring from his finger as he lay dying.

“It’s completely heartless,” Sergeant Peter Simpson said.

“There is no other way to describe what happened.”

Tschaggeny is also accused of stealing Best’s backpack.

“Some items were missing, including a wallet with phone numbers of some of Best’s long-time friends,” police said.

Police say they were able to track down Tschaggeny beneath an overpass after receiving a tip from “an alert Domino’s Pizza employee”.

A day earlier, tips had come pouring in after police posted a surveillance video of the suspect, along with a plea for the public’s help.

Financial crime ‘unreported’ Many businesses don’t report financial crime because of the risk to their reputation, the head of the Serious Fraud Office says.

SFO chief executive and director Julie Read appeared before a Parliamentary select committee yesterday alongside the office’s responsible minister Paula Bennett.

In response to a question about why white collar crime was not increasing, Read said it was difficult to know the true size of the problem.

“What we see is what is referred to us or what is detected.

“We know there is a level of financial crime out there that is undetected,” Read said.

“One of the accounting firm’s surveys showed that something like 40 to 60 per cent of businesses reported they had been the subject of financial crime in the last three or four years.

“A lot of that is not reported because people don’t want to admit their firms have been the subject of financial crime.”

Read said companies were less likely to report financial crime in times of economic growth, given it often did not greatly affect their bottom line.

“But when you have a recession, then all of a sudden it not just affects their bottom line it puts them out of

business and this all comes to light.”

Budget 2017 allocated the SFO an extra $1.4 million in operating funding and $840,000 capital over four years, for an integrated case and evidence management system.

MPs also queried Read about the threshold at which SFO would investigate.

She said that was about $1m, but cases with losses below that could be investigated if there were indications of systemic problems.

Treasury rolling in it The latest accounts from Treasury show there is more money coming into the government’s coffers than forecasted – $1.2 billion in the 10 months to the end of April. The statements, compared against the May 25 budget estimate, show Crown tax revenue is 2 per cent, or $1.2b, higher than forecast for the 10 months to April 30. The tax revenue is $5b or 8.8 per cent higher compared to the same period last year.

Petrol profits up New Zealand’s biggest petrol chains increased their profits in 2016 despite revenue dropping, as rising oil prices made their inventories more valuable. The New Zealand division of British Petroleum, one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies, lifted annual profit 15 per cent in 2016 to $147 million, though revenue dropped 3 per cent to $2.7 billion.

Infrastructure past use-by date New Zealand’s local authorities face a $100 billion-plus to replace ageing water pipes, drains and sewers and will need central government assistance to meet the bill, says Local Government New Zealand, the lobby group for the sector.

At its quarterly briefing yesterday, LGNZ president Lawrence Yule – also a National Party candidate in the September general election – said a swathe of essential underground infrastructure installed by towns and cities in the 1960s was reaching the end of its life and would need replacement in the next few years.

Back then, such infrastructure had been co-funded by central and local government, but the responsibility had moved exclusively to local government in the interim and could place a huge strain on some communities’ finances, especially where populations were shrinking or ageing.

“We don’t want the government to take responsibility,” said Yule.

“We want to take responsibility (for the so-called ‘three waters’) but want to make sure it’s done

holistically. The current funding mechanism won’t work, so we are starting the conversation.”

LGNZ has promoted a co-regulatory structure for water infrastructure for some time, akin to the shared way local and central government currently fund roading.

“This renewals curve is not a surprise,” said LGNZ chief executive Malcolm Alexander.

“Now it’s here.”

Among ways to fund replacement proposed by local government are the ability to earn revenue from new sources other than property rates and to use off-balance sheet ‘special purpose vehicles’ that would allow infrastructure projects to be debtfunded without blowing out local councils’ balance sheets.

Maintaining current strong credit ratings was essential for the New Zealand local government sector, the head of the Local Government Funding Authority, Mark Butcher, said.

Yule also called for decisions to be made “sooner rather than later” on whether or not to make

users pay for their water allocations or to use a non-market, administrative method to allocate freshwater.

A Technical Advisory Group is due to report on the long vexed issue in December.

“We are open to pricing water,” he said.

“We can’t leave it in limbo.”

Alexander warned the cost of upgrading and replacing existing water infrastructure would be further challenged by the addition of new environmental, water quality and infrastructure resilience standards since the original pipes were laid.

LGNZ also continued to call for a share of GST or other locally raised revenue to allow investment in infrastructure required to support the country’s booming tourism industry.

Yule, who will step down at the end of the month, also announced the contenders for the LGNZ presidency at next month’s annual meeting were the mayor of Dunedin, Dave Cull, and Nelson’s mayor, Rachel Reese.

About time dairy owners saw action Megan Gnad

P

rotests from dairy owners demanding support and protection amidst a nationwide spike in aggravated robberies, finally seems to be resulting in action.

But only time will tell if budgets and publicity campaigns go far enough to keep our shop owners safe.

Yesterday, Police Minister Paula Bennett told a parliamentary committee that a sub-culture was partly to blame, with offenders now seeking misplaced notoriety if they appear on Facebook or their CCTV photo makes its way on to television.

She explained that whereas they used to “go out and graffiti and kind of beat each other up, it seems to be the thing right now that you walk into a store with a baseball bat”.

Unfortunately, we see it time and time again.

In the past few weeks, a Christchurch dairy was robbed for the ninth time in seven months.

This is unacceptable.

Dairy workers – many of whom are immigrants to our country and are expected to be open late into the evening – put themselves and their families in the line of danger every time they open their doors to earn a living.

As the violence escalates, many dairy owners are left fearing for their lives and members of their community, warning tougher laws need to be brought in.

In April, they took to the streets, protesting and calling for harsher penalties. Then last month, Auckland dairy and liquor store owners were considering a mass hunger strike to “press the Government into action”, after another violent robbery.

And finally, it seems their voices may have been heard.

Last week, Bennett announced $1.8m would be made available for robbery prevention at dairies, superettes and small local businesses. Police would help to decide the best prevention methods to be used.

And the 2017 Budget also included a $503 million package to boost police officer numbers by 880 over four years.

It’s progress that the Government’s committing to stem this rising tide of vandalism, but this now needs to result in real action to prove everything is being done to protect our vulnerable dairy owners working on the frontline.

Both due to lack of looking for oncoming traffic (bikes), and yes I was fully kited out with front and rear light and bright clothing. I would probably feel safer if there were biking lanes at intersections.

Melanie Am sad to see people being down on cyclists. From an environmental point-of-view there’s not much excuse not to be cycling in Ashburton - wide roads, nice and flat, not generating pollution.

I feel safer biking here than I did in London. Unfortunately, being a bit lazy, I take the car all too often. It’s great that so many people do choose to bike though...

Kirsty I had a near miss at havelock/west streets lights. I was turning left. In my lane indicating and all. In my car, it was a cloudy day so he could clearly see my indicator. and me in the turning lane... was waiting for a pedestrian to finish crossing. well just as I started moving that lycra wearing idiot decided to shoot up my left to go straight.

Results up to 5pm yesterday: Jo-Ann I think the police should do the cycle checks and teach kids in school how to ride like the MOT did years ago, if your bike didn’t have a sticker to say it passed you weren’t allowed to ride ya bike home lol.

And the roads weren’t as busy back then.

ast week, the Ashburton District Council was given the disappointing news that the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) does not intend to support the construction of a second Ashburton bridge in the next 10 years.

Jim Garland, NZTA’s southern regional director, told the council that in light of other national roading priorities, the second bridge did not fit within NZTA’s 10-year plan.

While construction of the second bridge will be a council-led project, and is currently on the regional land transport programme for 2026, it will require financial input from the national land transport fund that is administered by NZTA. So where to from here? So far, the council has decided on the route for the second bridge, land designation has been sorted, and we have bought some properties along the route in preparation for

To set the bridge firmly on NZTA’s agenda, we need to prepare a business case that clearly demonstrates why it is needed.

This will be a major exercise, requiring us to go right back to the start, look at the problems we are trying to solve, consult with a variety of stakeholders and identify all possible solutions.

It will need to show that the bridge is needed now, it has a good cost benefit ratio, and that people agree that it should go ahead.

When our council made the

decision to set things in motion for a new bridge, NZTA did not require a business case of this scale.

According to our roading team, it will be the largest business case they have ever tackled. I wish them well and will be offering any support I can give them.

This week, I would also like to mark the opening of Ashburton’s new Countdown supermarket, which will employ an additional 68 people.

Our supermarkets are major employers and deserve to be congratulated for their contribu-

tions to our economy.

Well done to Countdown and welcome to any new people who have come to live and work here as a result of the new supermarket.

Social PR wins the race in 2017

I

t wasn’t large city agencies, McDonalds, or Spark that took out the Public Relations Institute of New Zealand (PRINZ) Supreme Awards this year.

One was solo practitioner Chelsea Halliwell from Christchurch and the other was agency Campbell Squared based in the region of Tauranga. The awards were held May 25 at the Great Hall in Christchurch, as part of PRINZ conference entitled Seismic Shifts.

Both winning campaigns demonstrated the real impact public relations can have on social change. Both agencies started with humble home-based beginnings and community values entrenched.

One of the largest treaty settlements to date was spurred by Campbell Squared Communications.

They developed a programme and ran a campaign that used

video and livestreaming to turn thousands of disengaged whanau members into supporters who voted ‘yes’. At the official signing, the client said the agency taught them to move beyond their cultural constraints and embrace technology.

In what some might call a David vs Goliath campaign, Chelsea Halliwell, solo practitioner, also received the Supreme Award for Nothing but the facts – how Redcliffs won its school back.

This campaign was to reverse the Ministry of Education’s decision

to close Redcliffs School postearthquake. Its effective lobbying and garnering of immense community support resulted in the desired change. Redcliffs School remains.

PRINZ Awards chief judge, Lisa Finucane, FPRINZ, said that while presenting two winners is unusual and was last done in 2012, the outcomes of both campaigns indicated a real social shift and it was impossible to separate the two.

“These were two excellent campaigns and certainly demonstrate the way ethical public relations can be used to engage communities and decisionmakers.

“They both demonstrate a clear two-way flow of information, reaching people and groups that may have been missed in the past, and helped achieve an outcome with real benefits to stakeholders,” she said.

■ Stir the cooked macaroni through, then pour it all into a baking or casserole dish.

■ Top with fresh breadcrumbs and bake until top is crisp.

inter and macaroni cheese go together like the perfect couple in the perfect marriage.

For the purist mac and cheese will mean nothing other than macaroni, cheese, pasta and a smooth and silky sauce. Yum. But mac and cheese can be so much more.

The basics can be boosted and given a twist with a range of meats and vegetables and while they won’t qualify for the title traditional, they’re still a great addition to the dinner table.

Vegetables and macaroni cheese 250g macaroni 1 large leek, trimmed and cut into chunks 300g mixed broccoli and cauliflower florets 350ml semi-skimmed milk 30g plain flour 1t English mustard 125g extra-mature cheddar cheese, grated Salt and black pepper 8 cherry tomatoes, halved 1T parmesan, freshly grated

Macaroni cheese with bacon and onion 2 rashers bacon 220g penne pasta 1 onion, diced 1 clove garlic, minced Sauce: 30g butter 3T plain flour 2C (500ml) milk 3C (340g) grated cheese

■ Preheat oven to 180°C. ■ Place bacon in a large, deep frypan.

■ Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown. Drain, crumble or dice and set aside.

■ In a large saucepan with boiling salted water, cook pasta until al dente. Drain.

■ In a medium frypan saute the diced onion and garlic.

■ Take off heat and add cooked bacon and set aside.

■ Sauce: In a medium saucepan melt the butter over low heat.

■ Once melted, add the flour and stir constantly for 2 minutes.

■ Gradually add milk and continue stirring until thickened.

■ Stir in 2 cups of the grated ched-

dar cheese and stir until melted.

■ Combine cooked pasta, sauteed vegetables and sauce.

■ Pour into a 2 litre casserole dish.

■ Add the last cup of grated cheddar cheese to top of mixture.

■ Bake uncovered in preheated oven until cheese on top is melted and brown, 15 to 20 minutes.

Sneaky chicken macaroni cheese 4-5 chicken thighs, boneless & skinless 3C dry macaroni 50g butter 1 onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2t dried oregano

2 1/4 C milk 1/2 C cream 1/4 C flour mixed with 1/3 C milk 2-3C chopped washed spinach 1 1/2 C peas, cooked 1C freshly grated parmesan 1C grated tasty cheese Zest of 1 lemon, plus a good squeeze of juice ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. Season chicken thighs with salt and pepper.

■ Cook the macaroni until al dente (still firm to the bite).

■ Drain and stir through some olive oil so it doesn’t stick together.

Set aside.

■ Heat a large frying pan over a high heat.

■ Add a splash of olive oil and the chopped chicken thighs.

■ Cook until golden brown and crispy.

■ Transfer to a roasting dish and bake in the oven for 15 minutes.

■ Don’t clean pan and add butter and another splash of oil.

■ Add the onion, garlic and oregano and cook, stirring for about 5 minutes until the onion is soft.

■ Add the milk, cream and the flour mixture to the pan, whisking all the time until it’s well combined.

■ Simmer for 5-10 minutes or so until the sauce has thickened.

■ Add half the parmesan and the cheese, and stir until melted.

■ Add peas, spinach, lemon zest and juice, and chicken pieces.

■ Add the pasta to a large pan of boiling salted water.

■ Bring back to the boil for 5 mins.

■ Add the vege and cook for another 5-8 mins, until pasta and broccoli are almost tender.

■ Drain, keeping about 150ml of the cooking water.

■ Put the milk in a large jug, whisk in the flour.

■ Microwave for a few minutes, whisking occasionally, to make a thick sauce.

■ Whisk in some of the cooking water to slacken sauce.

■ Stir in the mustard and about a third of the cheese, and season.

■ Pre-heat the grill. Warm a flameproof dish under it for a few minutes.

■ Mix the pasta and vegetables into the sauce.

■ Spoon the mixture into the hot dish and sprinkle with the rest of the cheddar.

■ Arrange the tomatoes on top and sprinkle with the parmesan.

■ Brown the macaroni cheese under the grill.

Sweet majoram lamb with summer leaves and citrus The citrus flavours throughout this meal make it ideal for a refreshing summer meal. For a festive twist, finish the plated salad with extra leaves of sweet marjoram and the seeds of one pomegranate.

Serves 4 Lamb 3 Quality Mark lamb rumps, trimmed Marinade 2T oil 1/2 T lemon juice 1T roughly chopped fresh sweet marjoram or oregano (or 1t dried) Salad 1 1/2 C cooked Israeli couscous 1 head baby cos lettuce, leaves separated and torn into pieces 4 large handfuls baby spinach leaves 2 radishes, trimmed and finely sliced 2 oranges, peeled and segmented 2T shelled and toasted pistachio nuts Citrus vinaigrette 1/4 C olive oil 2T orange juice 1T lemon juice 1t Dijon mustard 1t liquid honey

■ Preheat the oven to 190°C conventional bake.

■ Lamb: Combine marinade ingredients then rub over the lamb. Cover and leave in a cool place for 10-15 minutes to allow the flavours to infuse. Place a roasting dish in the oven to heat.

■ Heat a frying pan over a mediumhigh heat and brown the lamb on all sides. Transfer lamb to the heated roasting dish, place in the oven and roast for 10 minutes for medium-rare. Remove from the oven and leave to rest, covered loosely with foil for 10 minutes, before slicing across the grain.

■ Salad: Place all prepared ingredients, except pistachio nuts, in a large bowl ready for dressing.

■ Citrus vinaigrette: Place citrus vinaigrette ingredients in a small screw top jar and shake well. Season to taste.

■ To serve: Divide lamb slices between 4 plates. Toss salad in the citrus vinaigrette and place beside the lamb slices. Sprinkle with pistachio nuts and serve immediately.

Wilson, Bassett fly Ashburton flag Ashburton bowlers may not have come away with any of the major prizes from the South Island championships, but there were some pleasing results from the long weekend’s action in Nelson.

The best result on the local front came from the Willowby pairing of Grant Wilson and Mat Bassett, who teamed up with Chris Moffitt and Alanna Preddy from South Otago to finish runners-up in the South Island Fours on Sunday.

In the final they took on the Southland quartet of Gary, Graham and Jan Low along with Warwick Gray and after leading 4-1 early in the match looked on their way to glory only for their opposition to work their way back into the match and win 9-6.

Wilson and Bassett had a good weekend away also making the final eight in the triples yesterday before being knocked out.

The weekend’s action was a perfect precursor to a busy schedule ahead in which a number of Ashburton players will be heading to Taupo later this week to compete in the national championships which begin on Saturday and run for the entire week.

The competition begins on Saturday with qualifying in the singles championships.

Ashburton will be strongly represented with Simon Thomas, Mat Bassett, Ken MacKenzie, Matt Markham and Jeremy Markham all flying the flag in the qualifying rounds before hopefully earning their way through to the knockout phase on Sunday.

In the masters event, Graeme Chapman and Martin and Jenny Nordqvist will line up for the district.

For Martin the chance is there to go one better than last year after finishing runner-up in the event in Tauranga.

Martin Nordqvist will be out to go one better when he lines up in the Masters National Singles to start the annual national championships in Taupo on the weekend.

Marshall yet to decide on 2018

By Matt Encarnacion Benji Marshall has left the door open on playing yet another season in the NRL despite his playing opportunities drying up at Brisbane in his first year at the club.

Marshall showed glimpses of the player that dominated the league for the best part of the last decade when he sparked a late comeback in Saturday’s loss to the Sydney Roosters.

And while it was just his third appearance of the season, Marshall isn’t willing to call time on his playing career when his one-year deal expires in November.

Asked if he felt this would be his farewell season, Marshall said: “Not so much yet. I still Benji Marshall feel like I’ve got a bit to offer.

The body’s still feeling okay. I feel like I’ve gotten past the injury phase now so I just want to play some consistent footy.

“I’m not sure what’s going to happen but I’m definitely loving life up there. I gotta be honest, it’s the happiest I’ve been for a long time.”

While some expect the 32-year-old to retire, Marshall could be valuable depth to a Broncos side that will need to fill the boots of the departing Ben Hunt next season.

Kodi Nikorima is one option to play at halfback, while 2018 recruit Jack Bird could be granted his desire to be moved closer to the ball at five-eighth.

Marshall, 32, insists he has achieved most of what he can in his career.

“I’m pretty comfortable with what I’ve done in my career, to be honest with you. I’m just trying to prove it to myself at the moment that I can still do it,” he said. “Within myself I know that I can and I thought the last two games I showed signs of getting back to where I want to be.”

Blues a formidable challenge

By Patrick Mckendry The jetlag should have gone but the challenges keep mounting for the British and Irish Lions and there is no mistaking the importance of their match against the Blues tonight, three days before a titanic challenge against the Crusaders in Christchurch.

Coach Warren Gatland has made 15 changes to the squad which limped to a 13-7 win over the Provincial Barbarians in Whangarei and wants to see a vast improvement, saying his Lions side must find a different level of intensity at Eden Park.

“We’ve just got to match fire with fire with our approach to the game,” Gatland said.

“I think the fact that we would have been here for a week on Wednesday ... [and] understanding what’s coming at us and how tough the challenge is going to be, I think that’s going to put us in good stead.

“A few guys were flat and disappointed that we didn’t win the [opening] game more comfortably, but it was a win, an ugly win at that, but we came out of it on top and there’s only one way to go and that’s to improve on the performance.”

While Gatland has named two quality England locks in Courtney Lawes and Maro Itoje for the Blues match, he is clearly going to name a near test-strength side for the Crusaders at AMI Stadium on Saturday and there is a danger that a fired-up challenge from Tana Umaga’s men could catch his side out like the Provincial Barbarians so nearly did.

Welsh outside backs Liam Williams and George North are almost certain starters at AMI Stadium, as is England prop Maka Vunipola.

In the meantime, Gatland’s new boys, including one Jared Payne, a former Blues player and adopted Irishman, have the opportunity to put a new perspective on a tour which has begun so unconvincingly.

“They’re a pretty good team so we’re going to have to be on our toes. If we give those boys too much space they could cause us headaches.”

Retallick ruled out with head knock Lock Brodie Retallick has been ruled out of the Chiefs’ crucial Super Rugby match against the Hurricanes because of a head knock.

The All Black has been replaced by Michael Allardice for Friday’s match in Wellington, the Chiefs confirmed yesterday.

Retallick suffered a head knock in the Chiefs’ 46-31 win over the Waratahs on Saturday.

The 26-year-old was still suffering from headaches and couldn’t pass the concussion protocol test.

Coach Dave Rennie is taking the setback in his stride.

“It’s a real pity as Brodie’s massive for us with all the grunt work he does, but it just means an opportunity for someone else so they’re going to have to step up.”

Retallick’s unavailability has been compounded by Taleni Seu’s long-term injury when he was ruled out of action for six weeks after fracturing his arm during training.

Brodie Retallick won’t be lining up to face the Hurricanes.

This has opened the door for the return of Allardice, who has not started for the Chiefs since injuring his knee in last year’s 40-7 win over Wales in Hamilton.

“Michael’s really excited as

he’s been out for a while and has come back recently playing a couple of club games.

“He got a cameo off the bench at the weekend so he will be better for that, so there is every

chance he will start,” Rennie said.

Retallick’s injury is the latest worry for the All Blacks ahead of the test series against the British and Irish Lions.

It adds to a niggly injury toll for All Blacks selectors, with Kieran Read, Dane Coles, Ryan Crotty, Jerome Kaino and Liam Squire all out currently with injury or recuperating from surgery.

Charlie Ngatai’s return to Super Rugby remains up in the air, the versatile midfielder suffering from illness as he attempts to overcome his latest battle with concussion.

The Chiefs will be without Toni Pulu, who pulled a hamstring against the Waratahs, while Sam McNicol’s return is uncertain as he also battles the after-effects of concussion.

However in some good news for the franchise, Tim Nanai Williams won’t be required for Samoa’s test match against the All Blacks and will be available to play against the Lions. - NZME

Welsh hooker Ken Owens says his selection as stand-in Lions skipper for tonight’s clash with the Blues has come as an enormous shock. The 30-yearold will make his Lions debut at Eden Park, getting the nod over rakes Rory Best and Jamie George just three weeks after an ankle injury that threw his tour into doubt.

SBW to keep it simple The irony won’t be missed by Lions coach Warren Gatland that the Blues are sending their midfield into action at Eden Park with the clearest message to run hard and straight. The Blues want to see Sonny Bill Williams – passed fit to play after his knee came through training with no ill effects – in particular keep his game decidedly simple – hammer hard on to the ball, look for a weak shoulder to attack and take his side over the gainline. Queensland trip beckons An outing on her home track today will keep Dontpokethetiger up to the mark ahead of the Riccarton filly’s two start campaign in Queensland.

Peter Rudkin’s multiple stakes placegetter will make her Australian debut at Ipswich on Saturday week, an event that will serve as a lead-up to her main target a fortnight later.

“She’s going to have a run here tomorrow and she’ll be on a flight on Friday,” the Canterbury trainer said.

“I’ve got another horse over there with Paul Jenkins that I part-own called Precision Strike and he won the last race at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

“He won from the outside gate – he’s not a bad type and when I was talking to Paul he said he would be going to Ipswich next and the same race as Dontpokethetiger.

“I don’t mind if she runs second to him, her main race will be on July 1.”

Rudkin was referring to the Gr.3 Sunshine Coast Guineas over 1600 metres, a race won by the champion mare Winx two years ago.

Sport Successful heart surgery Olympic champion Kyle Chalmers says surgery for a worsening heart condition was a success. The teenage swimming star opted to sit out next month’s world championships to treat his supraventricular tachycardia – a recurrent rapid heartbeat that is normally not life-threatening.

“Double thumbs up because this time my heart surgery was successful!

Thank you all for the support,” Chalmers, 18, said on Instagram. He said a previous heart operation did not work.

Senior sides go point-less

Senior football sides from around Mid Canterbury found themselves struggling on the weekend, with none of the three sides able to secure a single point.

MCUFC Senior Men lost 3-2 to last-placed Hornby United after taking an early lead, which they were unable to defend.

The game was drawn heading into the final minutes, before a

penalty was awarded to Hornby, which was duly converted.

The loss leaves Mid Canterbury tied with Hornby on points, with only their superior goal difference keeping them above last place.

Away from home, Methven FC Seniors suffered a close 4-3 defeat to Burwood B. A win for the Methven side would have seen them move to the top of the table, two points clear of the Western Rhinos.

In the masters, MCUFC Masters lost 6-0 to Ferrymead Bays Winnies, leaving them ninth, five points clear of last placed Parklands United Black.

In the junior grades, Mid Canterbury’s 19th and 17th grade sides both squared up against teams from St Bede’s College in high-scoring affairs.

Twenty-three goals were scored in the two games, with the 19th grade side winning 6-5 away from home, while the 17th

grade side won 7-5 at the Ashburton Domain.

The Mid Canterbury 15th grade side continued their tough start to life in division one, losing 10-0 to FC Twenty 11 Red. On Sunday, the Mid Canterbury women’s side continued their demolition of division two with a 6-1 victory over Waimak Black. They now sit five points clear after eight games, having scored a breathtaking 78 goals, while only conceding four.
