Mid Canterbury principals appear divided over how to deal with huge increases in school rolls as the district’s population booms.
At a meeting with local principals on October 30, the Ministry of Education expressed concern about different rates of growth in the area, with some school rolls growing faster than others, and whether that growth was
sustainable. In a letter sent to the boards of trustees of local state primary schools on Monday, Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association president Chris Murphy outlined the issues currently facing schools in the area.
In the letter, Mr Murphy said the ministry had signalled a change in the district was needed and the “status quo” was no longer an option. But the underlying message was the district needed to find a
solution to the problem itself. The issue of how to deal with roll growth is a contentious one, with Mid Canterbury principals divided over how to tackle the problem. Continued on page 3 Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!
