Ashburton has been a significant winner in this year’s Queen’s Birthday’s honours. Among 186 honours awarded, six came to people who currently live in the district or who were born here. Opera singer Simon O’Neill grew up and was educated in Ashburton before moving on to study music at university. Over the past 20 years, O’Neill has carved out a career in opera that now sees him in hot demand internationally. He is recognised as one of the world’s finest heroic tenors. While O’Neill’s life is spent on the international stage, his home is in Auckland where he lives with his wife Carmel and his children Tom and Grace. He was made an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
Graham Kennedy was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business. Kennedy spent his working life as an accountant with Brophy Knight, but has also carved out a career as a director and member of many boards. He was part of the team that established niche share registry, BK Registries. Lake Hood was developed through the efforts of Kennedy and a small team of people who won the public’s hearts with the project. He is still involved in developments at the lake as chairman of the Lake Hood Extension project. Today Kennedy is a director and independent chair of several boards. Methven born Maurice McKendry was also made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit. McKendry, who has lived in Auckland
for many years received his award for services to harness racing. He has won almost every group one race as one of New Zealand’s leading harness racing drivers. He drove 10 winners in his first season and for 20 years held the New Zealand record of 161 wins in a season. As a trainer McKendry has 120 winners to his credit and mentors young people in the harness racing industry. Three Ashburton people were awarded Queen Service Medals. Michael Hanrahan and Iris OfficerHomes received awards for services to the community and Dr Claire Reilly for services to people with motor neurone disease.
