Claims wire strung over river track

Neck-high wire strung across the Ashburton River track is believed to be part of the police investigation into the shooting of three women at the Ashburton Winz office, Guardian sources say.

A wire line was discovered on Monday morning, soon after a man left the office where two women were killed and one was injured and cycled in the direction of the Ashburton River track, the sources said.

A witness saw a man riding a bicycle along the track toward River Road not long after the shootings.

Soon after, a neck-high wire was discovered strung across the track the man rode through, the sources said.

It is understood police are investigating the wire claim but a spokeswoman would not discuss an Ashburton woman’s claim she was hurt by a strand of wire on Tuesday.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said she suffered a minor cut to her neck when she ran into wire strung between two trees across the track just east of the Ashburton

“Just with trees and the light I didn’t even see it, and I was horrified,” she said.

But she disconnected the wire and alerted police and the Ashburton District Council.

Council open spaces manager David Askin said staff twice searched the area just off the main track by the dog park and Robilliard Park, and from the bridge to River Road.

No further wires were found.

Meanwhile, police confirmed they found the gun they believe was used to kill Peg Noble and Leigh Cleveland, and seriously injure Lindy Curtis. They would not say where it was found.

Later, a High Court judge barred media from publishing any photographs of Russell Tully, the man accused of carrying out the shooting.

His solicitor said there remained “an issue as to identification” and ongoing media saturation could seriously prejudice his trial.

New app helps compare speech Parents wanting to know how their child’s speech is progressing may soon be able to turn to a new app for help. Childchat has been developed by University of Canterbury speech and language therapy student Kristi Rabbitt, who was inspired to create the app after learning there was little knowledge about what speech therapists did. Childchat gives parents access to resources, support, guides and local contacts. Parents can also document, record and analyse the speech and language development of their children. “The idea is that with the easily accessible resources support and contacts at their fingertips, parents will ask for advice or help earlier on,” Ms Rabbitt said.

More from the Conchords US cable giant HBO has commissioned a new show from Flight of the Conchords’ stars Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement.

Clement said that a “new” four-part comedy show had been approved but the pair were yet to start work on it. “It was supposed to be this year but then we decided to put (vampire comedy movie) What We Do in the Shadows out ourselves,” Clement said.

McKenzie and Clement starred in Flight of the Conchords for HBO which ran between 2007-2009. They have toured since then, embarking on one of New Zealand’s biggest and most successful local tours in 2012 that concluded with a three-night run at Auckland’s Vector Arena. A movie based on the TV show had been discussed sporadically but Clement said that it had “lost a lot of impetus over the last couple of years. We talk about a movie every so often.

Police yesterday confirmed they’d found the firearm they believe was used in Monday’s triple shooting at the Ashburton Work and Income office.

They have not revealed where the firearm was found but said it was found on Tuesday.

Police would also not elaborate on how they believed the man who has been charged in relation to the crime which rocked Mid Canterbury, came to be in possession of that weapon.

Police had been on the hunt for the weapon after Monday morning’s tragedy which claimed the lives of Ashburton women Peggy Noble and Leigh Cleveland, and injured Lindy Curtis.

Russell John Tully was taken into custody following seven hours on the run from police

and has been charged with two counts of murder and one of attempted murder.

It was a crime that rocked the community; someone entering an office and shooting three people going about their daily work routine before taking off and sparking large scale manhunt which put the town into lockdown.

Police revealed few new details yesterday but asked media to respect the privacy of the victims’ families and warned any approach would be a serious breach of their rights to privacy.

The High Court also ordered no further photographs of Tully be published.

Schools around the Ashburton District are returning to normal after most were forced to activate emergency procedures on Monday after the triple shooting tragedy at the district’s Winz office.

As police scoured the town and rural areas in Ashburton’s south east, schools went into lockdown, with children detained in classrooms. For most that meant gates and classroom doors were locked, blinds were pulled and communications networks set up with parents.

Longbeach and Wakanui schools were both within the search zones. Early warnings from police had both in lock-

The impending arrival of digging equipment in the school grounds provided the perfect screen for Wakanui School principal Hilary Boyce to swing her school into emergency lockdown on Monday.

“We told them they needed to be inside. We didn’t allow them to use the internet but as time went on we did give the older students a watered down version of what had happened.”

Parents were kept informed via the school’s Facebook page

and were respectful of requests not to try to collect their children until police gave the all clear, Mrs Boyce said.

Police were at the school when children were collected at 2pm.

The early warnings given by police and school Facebook sites were key for schools in keeping students safe on Monday, Hampstead principal Peter Melrose said.

His students were told the lockdown was similar to what would occur during an earthquake and were told an incident had occurred in town but they were given minimal details, he said.

There was no panic and no element of alarm, Mr Melrose said.

“Teachers maintained classes and did stirling work maintaining the status quo.

“The students thought it was a novelty.”

Ashburton College set up a teleconference for all schools to discuss school bus routes and how these could be re-jigged to ensure students in the search zone were able to go home. It was also established as the base for urban schools for any students who were not able to be collected from school at 3pm.

Ministry of Education staff visited 14 schools and 20 early childhood education providers across the Ashburton District on Tuesday, checking whether any staff or students needed support.

Commemorative sunflowers seedlings were offered to Mid Cantabrians yesterday to help lift the community spirit following the shooting of WINZ employees on Monday in Ashburton.

Mid Canterbury Feed The Bees project co-ordinator Jen Branje wanted to help people shaken by the double murder of Leigh Cleveland and Peggy Noble and shooting of Lindy Curtis at the Ashburton Winz

office. Mrs Branje had 150 sunflower seedlings to give to people as a gift of light.

The sunflowers were set for planting and would flower in about six weeks.

Once the sunflower dried off, seeds could be collected from its head and replanted for future use.

Mrs Branje said “there was something happy about a sunflower” and she hoped they might lift community spirit and could be an “ongoing gift”.

The seedlings had been propagated for a public

Bee Aware Evening on the night of the fatal shooting but it had been cancelled.

The sunflower was a bee friendly plant full of excellent bee food.

The Bee Aware Evening had since been rescheduled and would feature information on the Feed the Bees project, speakers from Backyard Bees and the Federated Farmers Bee Industry Group.

The free evening would be held at Base Youth Centre, on September 15, at 7pm.

Security at Work and Income offices around the country has been beefed by more than 100 extra staff following Monday’s double homicide at Ashburton’s Winz office.

The Ministry of Social Development held a press conference yesterday about threats to Winz sites over the past two days.

Chief executive Brendan Boyle said since Monday, there had been nine incidents at sites around the country, including phone threats and a smashed window.

“People cannot and should not be able to threaten people in their workplaces without consequences,” Mr Boyle said.

The organisation was taking a “zero tolerance” approach to any threats, he said.

As well as 100 extra security staff at sites around the country, police were also based in or near all Christchurch Winz offices.

The extra security measures would be in place until further notice, Mr Boyle said.

Plans well in hand for community service A civic community service is planned to celebrate the lives of Leigh Cleveland and Peggy Noble, shot dead in the Ashburton Work and Income office on Monday morning.

Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay said the service was planned as a way the community could come together to express their grief and show the families of those involved in the tragedy that their community was thinking of them and supporting them.

“This will allow us to acknowledge the many people affected by the terrible events of this week and it is also an opportunity for people to pay their respects to the families,” he said.

A day, time and venue for the service has yet to be decided and this is being worked through with the families with the assistance of Winz.

The event is being organised by the council and the Ashburton Ministers’ Association.

The tragedy had struck at the heart of Ashburton and the

civic service was an opportunity for people to “rise up and respond in a positive way” to what had been a terrible tragedy for the community, Mr McKay said.

Details of the service are being worked through but it will be well publicised when confirmed, he said.

A condolence book for the community to leave messages of support for the Cleveland and Noble families as well as the family of Lindy Curtis who was badly injured in the shooting, is available for signing in the Ashburton District Council’s reception area.

There will also be an opportunity to sign the condolence book at the civic service.

Flowers continued to be placed at the cordon into the evening last night while, on social media, people planned other ways to remember the victims.

On Facebook, support was gathering for a privately arranged, public candle-lit vigil at a site outside the cordon around the Winz office at 8pm tonight.

East Street retailers are buying flowers and planning to wear black as Ashburton remains in shock after Monday’s triple shooting.

“It could have been any of us,” Michael Hill Jeweller senior sales professional Cheryl Fowler said of Winz workers Leigh Cleveland and Peg Noble who were killed, and Lindy Curtis who was injured.

Ms Fowler went door to door along East Street yesterday to see how people felt about donating money towards flowers with the support of Flowers and Balloons, also on East Street, for the injured worker and the two deceased victims’ families.

Still reeling from Monday’s

events, and with the sentiment in their hearts that flowers say what words sometimes can not, she found bosses and staff supportive. “A lot of people said ‘We were hoping someone would do something’.”

There was also discussion about wearing black on the days the funerals were held, in support for the two women who were tragically taken.

“It affects everybody,” Ms Fowler said.

House of Travel owner operator Maxine Whiting said she did not hesitate when Ms Fowler came calling.

“They deserve all the support that we can offer them as families,” she said.

Paper Plus book assistant Norma Geddes said the flow-

ers would be a wonderful gesture. At least two of the three women were known as valued customers at the store.

“I think it’s just a way for everybody to be able to do something, what can you do apart from going down the road and putting flowers at the cordon.

You want to acknowledge them in some way, don’t you, so I think it’s a lovely idea that we can participate in something,” Mrs Geddes said.

Spark store manager Erin Keefe said all staff there gave money, and could wear their black uniform jerseys if the initiative of wearing black went ahead.

“Even though we didn’t know them personally, everybody has been touched,” Ms Keefe said.

$20.2m off to Pukekohe A Lotto player has won $20.2 million in last night’s Big Wednesday draw – the fourth biggest prize in the game’s history.

The winning ticket, sold at Countdown Pukekohe South, netted a first division prize of $20,048,756, including $18.6 million in cash.

The censure of a principal who should have reacted to suspicions about a paedophile teacher has sparked calls for clearer reporting processes.

A community leader says those who raised concerns about the teacher should feel validated about their warnings.

Armed incident An armed incident near Puriri, just south of Thames, has been resolved. Police said they were involved in an operation with an armed offender in the rural area of Waikato early yesterday afternoon.

Road closures were in place on State Highway 26, particularly at the intersection of SH26 (PaeroaKopu Rd) and SH25A. There were reports of armed cordons and the police armed offenders squad being called in. A person at the Puriri Hotel said she had seen a helicopter flying in the area and several police cars. She said the action appeared to be centred on Neavesville Rd about 7km south of Thames.

A woman killed on Monday after being hit by a train in Napier has been named. Police said she was Carole Lynne Boswell, 55, from Napier. Senior Sergeant Nick Dobson said the matter had been referred to the coroner. Ms Boswell was walking her pet dog when she was hit and killed by a freight train on Monday about 3.45pm. Police responded soon after members of the public saw a body lying by the railway tracks, 200m south of the Marine Parade and Georges Drive intersection.

Parker was sentenced in the High Court in August last year to preventive detention after admitting 74 sex charges relating to sleepovers with boys at his Awanui farm between 1999 and 2012.

Mr Hovell was dismissed in February last year after an investigation found he did not take appropriate action when concerns were first raised about Parker, his deputy principal.

In its report, the tribunal said Parker’s criminal behaviour would have come to light

earlier had Mr Hovell taken all steps to ensure pupils’ safety when he found out from police about the overnight stays.

The chief executive of Te Runanga o Ngati Kahu, Anahera Herbert-Graves, said some members of the community and some teachers did raise concerns about Parker’s behaviour with Mr Hovell, but no action was taken.

“They should feel validated that Stephen has had to pay a price.”

Principal’s Federation president Phil Harding said there needed to be clearer processes on what principals and teach-

ers should do if there was an allegation of illegal behaviour of a colleague.

“We need to work with the police and with other helping agencies to build a set of protocols and expectations for school leaders to follow when such tragic behaviour threatens to overwhelm a community.”

Teachers Council spokeswoman MaryRose Painter said there had recently been a big push to make sure school principals were aware of the requirement to report behaviour or teaching that is not up to standard.

Police have identified a mystery man who turned up at hospital injured and was only able to give his first name. The man, who identified himself as “Dave”, was admitted to Tauranga Hospital about 9.30pm on Tuesday, after having collapsed at a local business, police said. Yesterday afternoon, Tauranga police confirmed the public had helped solve the mystery.Detective Sergeant Darryl Brazier said “numerous calls from the public” allowed police to identify Dave.

“It’s great that the community responded in the way that they did and so quickly to our call for assistance and we thank them.”

Dave remains in a stable but serious condition. He was expected to make a full recovery, Mr Brazier said. On Tuesday night, upon arrival at hospital, he could only utter his name and was otherwise unable to speak due to his condition, he said.

Rising from the rubble

Four years ago, at 4.30am, life changed in Canterbury.

As the earth rolled and shook, waking people from their sleep, buildings cracked but few tumbled; just five months later the damage that was done in darkness on September 4, 2010 would be completed in the massive February 22 quake.

The 2010 7.1 magnitude quake, occurring on the Greendale faultline threw goods from shelves in shops, toppled chimneys and took its toll on the district’s elderly buildings.

While its impact was significant in Ashburton, Rakaia and Methven bore the brunt of its fury.

In some parts of the Ashburton District homes lost power, but in Ashburton itself the power stayed on. One by one houses were illuminated as people struggled from their beds, opening doors, calling to neighbours.

Nature had vented its fury on Canterbury under cover of darkness but the true extent of the damage caused by those few seconds of movement in the earth’s crust, would not be known until daylight; in most cases for months.

In Methven, however, the damage was starting to be counted in crumbling masonry spewing from the walls of elderly buildings. That would mean long hours for engineers from around Canterbury, inspecting those buildings and deciding their fate.

It was the same in Rakaia.

Chimneys toppled, buildings cracked.

In the days that followed as home owners took a long hard look around their properties, the claims would begin to flow into EQC’s offices. They would eventually become a torrent that continued to grow in size and number as after shocks and new

earthquakes occurred, culminating in the devastating February 22 quake five months later.

Four years on, people still remember. Most no longer wake when a distant train rumbles down the main trunk line at night, most no longer tense when their home’s timbers creak as they contract and expand.

Most, however, can still recall waking in darkness, feeling disoriented, hearing noises, feeling movement before realising that the earth was pitching and rolling, that they were living through an earthquake.

For many, the experience of that first quake will have become wrapped and perhaps lost in the myriad of aftershocks and lesser quakes and it will also have merged in the devastation of its February cousin.

There’s already a new building on site at the Triangle Garage.

Four years on, the Ashburton District’s built environment has changed. What the September 4 earthquake started, those that followed completed.

While few houses were demolished, many lost chimneys and vast numbers were damaged to some degree. Much of the repair work has been completed, but for some homeowners, the wait has been long. And it continues.

Many commercial buildings have been demolished, vacant lots await a rebuild and there are still buildings with closed signs hammered in place. Four years on, those signs are faded and tattered, the buildings themselves crumbling reminders of once thriving places of business.

Four years on, Ashburton has proved that it takes more than a

string of catastrophic earthquakes to bring it to its knees.

While many buildings have now been lost, there are bold plans to rebuild, to create a new Ashburton, one that is built to endure, built to meet the needs of not just today, but also the future.

Central Ashburton has become a place of changing faces and open spaces. As buildings are demolished, businesses have relocated, some to the suburbs, possibly never to return and others to vacant spots in the central business area.

The string of demolitions started shortly after the September 2010 quake. Almost overnight Methven’s Steelworx, Thai Chilli and PC House were on the demo list and over the coming months they were to either disappear completely or be substantially changed.

In Ashburton, demolition was slower to get under way, the process of inspection was much greater. The Triangle Garage disappeared. A strip of shops on Burnett Street were red stickered and their fate hung in the balance as their multiple owners debated whether to demolish or repair. They opted to repair but that would leave the old buildings sitting empty and deteriorating for many months.

Tancred Street nightclub Millies was also one of the early victims of a red sticker followed by historic Westburn Courts on West Street.

And so it continued – buildings on Burnett Street and East Street tumbled, several on Tancred Street disappeared and then the largest project of all, the massive demolition of old buildings fronting Burnett and Cass Street had their date with the bulldozer.

And as all those buildings fell, plans for their replacements were developed.

Today the new Westburn Courts is under construction, and a bold plan is almost completed for a new retail and business hub on the vast empty lot bounded by Burnett, Cass and Tancred streets.

The future of the Ashburton Arcade is still unclear, with plans floated for its replacement but no dates for this to happen firmed up.

And there are some building owners who have dug in for the long haul. They’re prepared to do the hard yards to repair their buildings. Others are still to make a final decision and there are still buildings where demolition has been decided but action is yet to be taken.

There have been predictions that up to 70 per cent of Ashburton’s town centre may disappear under the bulldozer and rise again in a new form. The foundations for that change were laid on September 4, 2010.

It may only currently be being used as a carpark, but there are plans for a big development in the Cass Street area that housed Smallbone Motors.

High on drugs in theatre

By Natalie akoorie An anaesthetic technician who collapsed in a hospital theatre while attending to a patient was high on a drug used in sedation, according to a report from the health watchdog.

Kristin Lawson has been struck off and censured for stealing and consuming the controlled drug Remifentanil, which she used three times last

year while on duty at MercyAscot hospitals in Auckland.

Lawson also stole the drug from her employer to consume at home and admitted to once administering the painkiller to herself intravenously in the staff toilets.

The Health Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal cancelled Lawson’s registration and censured her to express “significant disquiet” about the offend-

ing which it said put patients at risk.

Registered anaesthetic technicians had to be alert, rested and able to deliver their service.

It could not see a way for Lawson to continue in the profession because an anaesthetic technician must handle and control drugs.

The offending, which spanned four months from March last year, was discovered when

Lawson looked “sleepy” before she fell off her stool while in theatre with a patient on June 25.

Lawson told the tribunal she began abusing drugs after she was involved in a traumatic car accident in February last year and suffered flashbacks, nightmares and insomnia.

She used the drug to help her “relax, sleep and forget”.

Junior students at Mount Hutt College were in good spirits laughing and joking as they empowered themselves in a Think First anti-bullying launch yesterday at the high school.

It was the official start of #beyourselfie in Mid Canterbury.

It was designed to empower people; both young and old.

Think First project co-ordinator John Hobbs said #beyourselfie got people to take a photo of themselves (a selfie) and write a one word description about themselves.

The description might be considered a flaw by others.

However, because the person ‘owned it’, it took away any power bullies might have had previously.

Some of the students’ selfdescriptions included sporty, pro-gamer, runga, fangirl, horsey, mx forever and gleek.

But they chose them and held a sign which read ‘and proud!’ giving them ownership.

In brief Fatal fire A person has died in a fire in rural Central Otago last night.

Emergency services were called to a rural area in Northburn, near Cromwell, about 6.30pm. They had been advised a person had been injured in a fire. A person was later found dead in the area. Police were at the scene working to establish the circumstances surrounding the death. The death was not thought to be suspicious, police said.

The person’s name would not be released until next of kin had been advised.

Fire trend ‘stupid’ A new internet trend of people setting themselves on fire has a Rotorua principal saying he “couldn’t believe they could be so stupid”. The Ministry of Education sent an email to school principals and Board of Trustees around the country earlier this week warning of the escalating trend. The challenge, popular in America, involves people covering their body with highly flammable substances and setting themselves on fire while another person videos and shares the act on social media sites. Two people have reportedly died from the act, including a 15-year-old American boy who burned to death in July after his body was engulfed in flames.

A union says it is pleased a man has been charged with manslaughter yesterday following the death of a forestry worker last year. Lincoln Kidd, 20, was killed during a tree felling operation on December 19. Police said Mr Kidd and his colleagues were felling trees on a forestry block on State Highway 1, near Levin, when he was struck by a falling tree. His colleagues immediately notified emergency services and gave him first aid, but he died at the scene.

Yesterday’s news showed forestry work must be taken seriously, said First Union general secretary Robert Reid. “Lincoln’s tragic death was one of 10 lives claimed by this industry last year, four of which were under the age of 30.

A 46-year-old Horowhenua man was charged yesterday and would appear in Levin District Court today, police said.

Gasp at not guilty plea

By ROB Kidd Of aPNZ Millie Elder-Holmes gasped from the public gallery of the High Court yesterday after hearing the man accused of killing her partner would defend the charge.

Along with the majority of those sitting in the public area of the High Court in Auckland yesterday, she was wearing a white T-shirt emblazoned with Connor Morris’ face and a message for him to “rest easy”.

Ms Elder-Holmes sat by Mr Morris’ parents as they reacted, first at hearing a not guilty plea entered to the murder charge and again when they learned the 33-year-old West Auckland man would keep his name suppressed.

It was too much for the victim’s father and high-ranking Head Hunter Chris Morris who stormed out of court.

“He should’ve thought about name suppression before he killed my son,” he said.

The defendant’s lawyer Marie Dyhrberg, QC, said there had been threats to the safety of her client and his family and asked for name suppression to continue until his next appearance.

But Justice Timothy Brewer suppressed names of the defendant’s family and where they were living, as well as where the accused was on remand, but declined him name suppression.

Ms Dyhrberg indicated she would appeal against that de-

cision, extending suppression until at least Friday morning pending her filing that application.

The defendant was excused from the hearing yesterday but that did not restrict a huge turnout in support of the Morris family.

Mr Morris, 26, suffered a fatal head injury during a confrontation outside a party in the West Auckland suburb of Massey exactly one month ago.

The man accused of his murder was arrested by Auckland police in the Kaitaia area more than two weeks later and his first court appearance took place behind closed doors in the Far North.

Court was beefed up.

Extra security guards screened people as they entered the building and there were several police officers present.

However, there was no serious trouble inside or outside court.

The defendant was remanded in custody and will be back in court in November. A fourweek trial was scheduled for August next year.

Family on the RIP Connor Morris Facebook page hoped for the defendant’s name to be made public before his next appearance.

“Such a bitter-sweet day today, but a massive thank you to everyone that turned up”, they posted.

Students’ chess skills put to the test

Parker Bradford is a young man with a plan – or, at least, a slew of backup plans.

The 10-year-old from St Joseph’s Primary School has a simple but potentially complicated approach to chess: be prepared for anything.

“You have to watch what your opponent is doing and then think about where they want to go, but not just now in two or three more moves,” he said.

“You have to have a backup plan if you don’t get to make the move you want to because if it fails, then it’s bye-bye Queen.”

It was bye-bye Queen time and time again in the school’s hall yesterday as young players competed in the South Island Schools’ Teams Tournament.

Five primary school, five intermediate school and six secondary school teams took part in the competition, which was run by the Ashburton Chess Club and Ashburton College.

The college team was defending champion and as the third of five rounds began, the weight of expectation was not lost on college player Devam Pandya.

“You have high hopes when you enter a tournament but the standard of play here means it’s been a good challenge, so far,” Devam said.

“It’s a good challenge. The key is to have a strategy, to think eight or nine moves ahead, and to recalculate if it does not play out.”

Rats run rampant at national park A population explosion of rats in New Zealand’s second largest national park poses a major threat to native wildlife, says the Department of Conservation.

Kahurangi National Park is one of the newest parks to be gazetted and is in the northwest of the South Island.

Between May and August, rat tracking levels in the park rose from 54 per cent to 90 per cent in the Fyfe River area, from 31 per cent to 51 per cent in the Cobb Valley, from 43 per cent to 78 per cent in the Waingaro River area and from 34 to 63 per cent in the Oparara Basin.

Rat tracking shows the percentage of baited tracking tunnels entered by rats over one night within a monitoring site.

DOC blamed the population explosion on an exceptionally heavy beech seed fall – known as a mast – providing abundant food.

DOC Westport conservation services manager Bob Dickson said research indicated tracking levels would reach 100 per cent in parts of the park in November, without pest control.

He said more rats also meant more food for stoats, causing their numbers to explode in summer.

“We can’t let Kahurangi’s vulnerable native species suffer heavy losses from this growing predator onslaught.”

DOC planned aerial 1080 drops over about 270,000 hectares in the western, northern and eastern parts of the park this spring as part of its Battle for our Birds programme. The drops would begin in coming weeks, when weather conditions allowed.

“We are particularly concerned to safeguard threatened populations of whio, great spotted kiwi, kea, kaka, rock wren, long-tailed bats and Powelliphanta snails (giant snails).”

Mr Dickson said aerial application of cereal baits containing biodegradable 1080 pesticide enabled large-scale protection in difficult terrain. It rapidly knocked down rats to near zero levels. Stoat numbers also substantially reduced through their eating poisoned rodent carcasses.

The Kahurangi aerial 1080 pest control would also reduce the number of possum.

The Kahurangi operation was one of 25 confirmed Battle for our Birds operations using aerially applied 1080 over about 680,000 hectares of South Island beech forests, Mr Dickson said.

Questions but there’s no answers Stu Oldham

T

here are more questions than answers as the families – and the community – of the three women shot in Ashburton’s Winz office struggle to come to terms with what happened.

Those closest to the victims should have the support of people and agencies that can keep them updated on the work being done do understand the events of Monday morning.

But people in the wider community will rely on each other, and the media that serves them, to learn what they believe they need to know about a tragedy that remains unfathomable.

Social media has, over the past couple of days, been a place where upset people have comforted each other and offered their sincerest condolences to those caught in the crime.

It has also been a place where people have swapped what they know about what happened, where they direct others to news about it, and where they ask each other ‘why’.

Some of the ‘why’ has been directed at the media – particularly those which called on family and published details of the victims before their names were released.

Some readers have asked why these outlets would rob the families of the chance to tell their story under their own terms, and why the Guardian did not do as they did.

The Guardian did not release the names of the women shot on Monday until those names were released by the police and it did not door-step their loved ones.

It did so because this was ethical, respectful and right.

Others might argue all is fair in the rush to get news, first.

They might point to social media posts and sky-high sales and website figures that show readers want to know, now.

This week, people used social media to tell journalists to discover more about the victims before their names were released.

Some still discuss the accused, often in contempt of court.

My predecessor wrote, in June, that your newspaper will report within the boundaries of respect and compassion.

This standard will not drop as the community tries to understand another tragedy.

Being one not to complain a lot I find that I need to voice my disappointment with the story in the Guardian making front-page headlines about the 27-year-old Daniel Brokenshire and how he is being picked on for breaking the law, no WOF, no rego, driving on a learner’s by himself, and many times by the sound of the $9000 fines.

NOT front page headlines at all, only in the court news stories is where we should be reading about this.

love the enthusiasm of younger teachers, especially those who are so digitally literate and know they have a wealth of digital experience compared to their older colleagues in schools.

Their passion for digital learning is infectious, especially when they have a “new way” of teaching that they want to share. They’re like a naughty puppy who loves bringing you items of interest, thinking this is the greatest way to interact with you.

Now couple the digital age pushed by younger teachers with education’s infatuation with everything being an acronym and you have pure pedagogical poetry.

We are now in the grips of the age of BYOD – Bring Your Own Device.

Simply put BYOD is the push from schools to encourage tech savvy and equipped children to bring in net-capable devices to enhance learning in the classroom. After all, these are powerful gadgets with incredible attention-grabbing abilities and they have a very real place in the classroom.

But a new idea – hardly. In fact this idea existed when I was at school. Our version of it went like this: It was the 1970s, brown corduroy pants (when you ran they rubbed together and made a “vit vit” noise) and yellow homemade jerseys reigned supreme.

Wholesome folk brought tomatoes by the caseload and bottled them. It was daring to have Chinese food once a year.

Colour TV arrived in 1973, and we paid annual licensing fees to watch Close to Home and Play School.

In politics Rob Muldoon called Labour’s policies “Borrow and Hope”. Current National Party leaders use similar phrases to describe Labour’s policies today.

Wellington were all having a go as Minister of Education.

In the classroom my teacher was asking us to bring some digital devices from home to help our learning.

Hang on – in the 1970s you had digital devices at home and teachers wanted you to bring them to school? The internet did not even exist then, so how was this possible?

Ah my little millennium child, our teachers were young and bright-eyed like you, and the Department of Education was full of serious-faced public servants struggling with political agendas. A bit like today really.

Anyway, the digital devices we had to bring were for math-

ematics.

Here is the list as I recall it: Iceblock sticks, milk bottle tops (the silver metal ones) and broad beans.

Why broad beans you ask?

Well no-one was going to eat them or steal them, they lasted longer than your phone battery and they were cheap because they were supplied to boys reform schools by the ton.

Ok – I might be pushing the definition of devices, but these objects aren’t digital are they?

Well yes they are, because we used our fingers to count with them.

You see mathematics was simple, we learnt by rote and developed our understanding later.

We learnt one technique for solving a problem and almost all of the maths I use today, was taught in the standard three to form two years. Broad beans, in my opinion, are the ultimate digital device for learning maths.

In brief Wrongly jailed Two US men who spent three decades in prison for rape and murder, one of them on death row, have been released after DNA evidence proved their innocence.

Mentally disabled half brothers Henry McCollum, 50, and Leon Brown, 46, were convicted in 1984 of raping and killing an 11-year-old girl in North Carolina. Recently analysed DNA evidence from the crime scene implicated another man, who is in prison for a similar crime. A county judge ordered the immediate release of the brothers.

The court judgement followed an investigation by the North Carolina Innocence Inquiry Commission, which tested DNA evidence found at the scene.

Second beheading claim Islamic State extremists released a video yesterday purportedly showing the beheading of a second American journalist, Steven Sotloff, and warning President Barack Obama that as long as US airstrikes against the militant group continue, “our knife will continue to strike the necks of your people.”

The footage — depicting what the US called a sickening act of brutality — was posted two weeks after the release of video showing the killing of

James Foley and just days after Sotloff ’s mother pleaded for his life.

Barak Barfi, a spokesman for the family, said the Sotloffs had seen the video but that authorities have not established its authenticity.

“The family knows of this horrific tragedy and is grieving privately.

“There will be no public comment from the family during this difficult time,” Barfi said.

Sotloff, a 31-year-old Miamiarea native who freelanced

for Time and Foreign Policy magazines, vanished in Syria in August 2013 and was not seen again until he appeared in a video released last month that showed Foley’s beheading.

Dressed in an orange jumpsuit against an arid Syrian landscape, Sotloff was threatened in that video with death unless the US stopped airstrikes on the Islamic State.

In the video titled A Second Message to America, Sotloff appears in a similar jumpsuit before he is apparently behead-

ed by a fighter with the Islamist State.

In the video, the organisation threatens to kill another hostage, one identified as a British citizen, David Cawthorne Haines. It was not immediately clear who Haines was.

Britain and France called the killing “barbaric”. British Prime Minister David Cameron said in a statement he would chair an emergency response meeting with his Cabinet to review the latest developments.

Putin off to Mongolia Russian President Vladimir Putin is flying to Mongolia for a working visit amid soaring tensions with Washington and NATO over a Kremlin-backed offensive in Ukraine. Putin is due to arrive in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator for talks with Mongolian President Elbegdorj Tsakhia. The two are to oversee the signing of trade and transport agreements before Putin departs. The world ‘is losing battle against Ebola’ The international group Doctors Without Borders warned yesterday that the world is losing the battle against Ebola and lamented that treatment centres in West Africa have been “reduced to places where people go to die alone”.

In separate remarks after a United Nations meeting on the crisis, the World Health Organisation chief said everyone involved had underestimated the outbreak, which has now killed more than 1500 people in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. UN officials implored governments worldwide to send medical workers and material contributions.

The British parents who took their critically ill child for treatment abroad without doctors’ consent were released from custody in Spain yesterday after authorities in the United Kingdom dropped charges of child cruelty against them. Their 5-year-old son Ashya, who has a severe brain tumour, has been cared for in a hospital in Malaga while they were incarcerated.

South Carolina authorities say a gunman killed two security guards and his stepfather and wounded a police officer before fatally shooting himself.

Greenville County Sheriff Steve Loftis says 23-year-old Evan Casey Bennett shot the security guards last Thursday night, but wasn’t immediately identified and captured. Bennett killed his stepfather on Monday before heading over to the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center, where he shot out windows and fired on the officer before turning the gun on himself.

Continued low milk prices will impact economic growth

By Jamie gray New Zealand’s economic growth could be affected if the price of New Zealand’s biggest export – milk powder – remains low, ANZ Bank says.

The bank has cut its forecast for Fonterra’s farmgate milk price for 2014/15 to $5.25/kg compared with the co-operative’s own forecast of $6 a kg.

If ANZ’s revised forecast materialises, it would represent an $5.1 billion (or 2.2 per cent of GDP) hit to dairy revenue compared to last season, it said.

“The hit to cash-flow isn’t as bad as the headline numbers, but it’s a hit nonetheless,” the bank said in a commentary.

“While farmers are still backing an improvement in prices later in the season and cash-flow looks better than the headline result, it’s unlikely to be slash and burn,” it said.

ANZ said the key for whether financial stress might start to emerge would be the dairy outlook for 2015/16.

“If there is another skinny year this is where cash-flow starts to dry up,” it said.

The outlook was now akin to the Reserve Bank’s March 2013 monetary policy statement, which talked about “upside and downside” risks.

“It’s not just the likes of a low dairy payout; the NZ dollar is lagging, the global scene is far more wobbly and some geopolitical aspects – Russian sanctions – have had clear implications for soft commodities,” ANZ said.

But ANZ said the economy still had considerable “pep”, with expected gross domestic product growth of 3 per cent next year.

build an expedition support vessel for an international owner, and that the price was “a pretty spectacular sum”.

Mr Hart shuns the media spotlight, but has grabbed headlines in the past for his luxury yachts.

He previously owned a 58-metre luxury motor yacht, also called Ulysses, which was moored at Auckland’s Viaduct for years before being sold, renamed Grand Rusalina and relocated to Monaco.

His 77-metre superyacht Weta is currently in Whangarei reportedly undergoing a $50 million makeover, after sitting for more than a year near Silo Park in Auckland’s Wynyard Quarter.

Rich-lister Graeme Hart was hands-on with the design of his massive new luxury super yacht, says the naval architect behind the estimated $78 million vessel.

Mr Hart – New Zealand’s richest man with a reported worth around $7 billion – has been revealed as the owner of the 107-metre expedition superyacht Ulysses.

The vessel was launched in Norway at the weekend from a shipyard in Ulsteinvik, 570km north of the capital Oslo.

“This is a very exciting project for us. We have been around in the yard and on board the vessel, and I’m very pleased with ... the work that has been done here so far,” Mr Hart told Norwegian business newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv.

The yacht was designed by Marin Teknikk and constructed by Norwegian boat builders Kleven, who have a long history of working together.

Unlike most yachts, the ship has a robust design which will allow it to withstand rough waters.

The yacht’s naval architect, Paul Endre Saetre, said the sheer size of the yacht allowed for many special features.

It includes a pool house, dining area, saloon, several bars, plunge pool, gymnasium, helipad, swimming pool and wine cellar.

Mr Saetre said the boat was also designed with space in its hull for a 21-metre doublehulled catamaran – along with two cranes to lift it on and off

the vessel. The catamaran was integrated into the bow of the ship, and there were also four sailing boats on board, Mr Saetre said.

Ulysses, which can accommodate up to 60 people, will now undergo a luxury fit-out, with an expected completion date some time next year.

The colour of its hull will remain the same, but the rest of the ship will be painted white.

Mr Saetre said Mr Hart originally approached him to design the yacht two years ago.

He visited New Zealand numerous times throughout the design process to work closely with Mr Hart.

“We did this design in close cooperation with Mr Hart and his team in New Zealand,” Mr Saetre said.

“It was exciting to work on this with these guys in New Zealand – it has been a joy and a pleasure all the way.”

He said the yacht was “one of a kind” as Marin Teknikk, like boat builders Kleven, normally designed offshore vessels for the oil industry.

“It is not a normal yacht design ... Mr Hart wanted more of a rough, offshore design, to withstand rough waters.”

According to local estimates, the boat is worth somewhere between 300 million and 400 million Norwegian Krone (between $58 million and $78 million), business newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv said.

The owner of the superyacht had been kept under wraps since Kleven announced the contract last year.

It’s hard-out practice for NZ team The Kiwi team is furrowing ahead in its attempt to claim titles at the World Ploughing Contest, set to get under way in Bordeaux, France, tomorrow.

Team manager, Wakanui veteran ploughman Alan Begg, is also coaching conventional contestant Mark Dillon and will judge in the event, standing down when his own man competes.

Yesterday the team reported day two of practice in a stubble field went well.

“Those with a close attention to detail will see that Mark has swapped his wheels from side to side,” reversible coach Allan Baker said.

“He decided to do that to remove the possibility of being incorrectly penalised for two wheel marks in his finish because of the different direction of the treads between the front and back wheels.

“As is usual for the world competition, there is a wide range in ploughing standard at practice as well as a wide range

of ploughing styles.

“Pairing is proving a problem for many. Our guys are up with the best for firmness but we still have some work to do.

“Today have to travel from the marshalling yard to the grass practice on the site of the competition under police escort.

“French regulations require that more than three tractors in convoy require an escort. Getting everyone ready to travel together will, I suspect, be a nightmare, but by the time of the actual competition we should have had plenty of practice.”

Tonight the team will attend a welcoming dinner and presentation on the 2015 venue in Denmark.

Also travelling with the team are Putaruru reversible ploughman Malcolm Taylor and New Zealand’s World Ploughing Organisation board member and vice chairman of the WPO Colin Millar.

There is also a sizeable contingent of supporters.

Synlait Milk receives MPI approval Rakaia dairy manufacturing company Synlait Milk has the tick of approval for its new $28.5 million canning plant.

The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) signed off this week on the company’s Risk Management Programme for its dry blending and consumer packaging plant. This means it can now pack and export retailready product from its manufacturing site, having met the New

Zealand food safety requirements.

However, documentation still needs to be signed off to enable Synlait to export infant formula.

An application to register as an exporter of these products was dispatched to the Chinese regulatory body last week.

Managing director Dr John Penno said it’s a major milestone towards meeting customer demand for total product integrity

from grass to glass.

“It is an important day for our business. We now have an integrated facility on one site that gives us full manufacturing control and delivers on the needs of consumers looking for nutritious and safe food,” Dr Penno said.

“The packaging plant provides further support for our value added strategy of supplying high quality finished infant

formula and nutritional products to our customers.

“We look forward with confidence to working with authorities in New Zealand and China to achieve registration as soon as possible.”

The packaging plant was built in nine months and is the only one of its kind in the South Island. It has a processing capacity of 30,000 metric tonnes per annum, equating to 33 million

LIC growing its diagnostics service to farmers LIC is taking steps to grow its diagnostics service to farmers, in response to increasing demand for tests to confirm ancestry and identify diseases in their herd.

The co-op’s GeneMark business currently analyses upwards of 750,000 tissue or milk samples each year, for disease identification, gene testing and parentage verification – but a new building to be constructed at its Riverlea campus in Hamilton will allow the service to expand, increase throughput and investigate new tests for the future.

“Some farming operations are pretty significant these days, with big herds and multiple staff. If they’ve got 30 or 40 calves born each day during

calving then matching mothers to those calves can be a challenge, but DNA parentage testing makes it much simpler.”

Mr Corbett said animal health is also a concern for many farmers, with international trade perceptions to consider and increasing pressure to reduce antibiotics, on-farm costs and increase production.

About 60 per cent of dairy herds in New Zealand will have

their herds BVD (bovine viral diarrhoea) status monitored through the co-op’s bulk milk monitoring service this season, which uses samples collected by the dairy company.

Some farmers are also utilising a new LIC milk test to identify animals with high levels of Johne’s disease, to better manage transmission to young stock.

“Diseases like BVD and Joh-

ne’s can have a devastating impact on a farming business, with significant flow-on effects to production, profits and overall herd improvement,” Mr Corbett said.

“We’re committed to growing this area of the business and providing solutions to reduce the occurrence of disease and make it easier for our farmers to operate their businesses.

“As part of this, we’ll be investigating how the tissue and milk samples for tests we receive currently can be utilised for more tests that analyse other health problems.”

Construction of the new building will get under way next month and is scheduled for completion in April next year, allowing herd testing to relocate in their off-season.

Drivers and farmers are urged to exercise caution when stock is on or grazing near roads.

“When it comes to stock and public roads, there is an elevation of risk and likewise responsibility for both the farmer and road users,” Federated Farmers transport spokesperson Ian Mackenzie said.

Farmers need to ensure their fences and gates are up to standard or they can be liable for any accidents caused.

However, drivers who do not drive to the conditions, disregarding the risk of stock on or near roads, can also be held to account.

The law is reasonably clear when it comes to farmers’ responsibilities be it fencing through the Animals Law Reform Act 1989 or moving stock under a local council bylaw, but Mr Mackenzie said police have done little to educate drivers about driving sensibly on rural

roads. “The real solution lies in a joint effort – farmers remaining vigilant with managing fences and stock, and police better educating drivers about showing caution and courtesy on rural roads,” he said.

“Driving like a bat out of hell at stock being moved along roads is asking for trouble.

“Along with the police, Federated Farmers is urging landowners, who are required by their local council to have roadside boundary fences, to check the integrity of their fences and gates, and for motorists to drive to the conditions and ensure their vehicles are up to warrant of fitness standard.”

“As a community we can prevent unnecessary accidents by doing the above and also reporting any loose stock, open gates or broken fences to the relevant farmer or police,” Mr Mackenzie said.

“All you need to do is pull into the nearest driveway or dial *555. It could make all the difference.”

To serve 4-5 burger buns, halved Lettuce leaves 1 red onion, very thinly sliced ■ Preheat the oven to grill. Place all the patty ingredients in a bowl, season and combine.

Shape into 4-5 patties, cover and refrigerate for 15 minutes.

Preheat a BBQ or frying pan to a medium heat. Brush the patties with a little oil and cook for a few minutes until crunchy and brown on one side. Turn the patties over, reduce the heat to medium-low and cook for another 8-10 minutes until cooked through. Transfer the patties to a roasting dish or oven tray and lay a slice or two of cheese on top of each one. Cook under the grill for a minute or so until the cheese starts to melt over the patties.

■ To make the secret sauce, combine all the ingredients and season as required.

■ Spread the bottom bun with a dollop of sauce, place a patty on top then add the lettuce leaves and slices of red onion.

■ CHANGING FACE OF TRANSPORT

Getting from here to there T

his week, in fact on this very day when this very paper and this very story will be published, I’ll have the pleasure of returning to see some friends in a group which I have delighted in joining from time to time.

They have planned activities arranged by very capable organisers, and on this very day they are having a transport theme and I’ve been asked to join in the discussion.

Most of those who will be present are senior citizens, and I’m really looking forward to hearing some of their recollections because as we all know transport is something we are absolutely depend-

ent upon, and as we also know methods of transportation have changed dramatically over time.

Knowing that I’ll be part of what I know will be a fascinating programme has prompted me to think about transport.

For many of us the word transport naturally conjures up images of the huge rigs which get the goods we need to us and the goods we produce to market.

But of course transport also encompasses getting people from place to place, maybe by plane, train, car, bus or other conveyance.

A recent trip to Wellington was a reminder that on any given day a lot of people are on the move.

So really transport in its many and varied forms is an integral part of our lives.

Many forms of transport rely on the wheel.

We don’t know how or when or by who the wheel was discovered, but what we do know is it changed the world.

But it has been suggested that the greatest change which came about because of the wheel was the invention of the bicycle.

Suddenly a lot of people who for a variety reasons could not own any form of

transport, maybe for financial reasons or because they couldn’t keep a horse and cart, could get a bike.

The bicycle was relatively cheap to buy, and cost little to run and maintain, so travel between villages and even a bit further afield became possible.

The world and experiences of the average person expanded, so there is good reason to suggest the bicycle had one of the greatest impacts on humans and on transportation.

So if you read this while having breakfast or maybe morning tea, you’ll have a fair idea of some of the things I’m planning to mention at our meeting on this very day.

But more

interesting will be the comments of others.

Speaking of bicycles, anyone who saw the number in the Lyttelton road tunnel last Sunday would agree it’s amazing how this very simple form of transport continues to hold a special place in everyday life.

The programme for our transport themed gathering on this very day includes a visit to the Vintage Car Club Museum after lunch, and while there we will certainly be reminded of just how much transport has changed over the years.

And by the way if you haven’t visited that museum or haven’t been there for a while, try and go, because it’s really worth a visit.

Across the ages transport has changed somewhat.

■ TUNNEL VISION

A walk down history lane

T

housands of people were in Lyttelton last Sunday to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the road tunnel which links the port suburb to Christchurch city.

Lyttelton lived up to its reputation as a vibrant place.

The tunnel was closed to regular traffic for around three hours, and people took the opportunity to travel through it either on foot or by other means of transport including bicycles, skateboards and in some cases by using some interesting forms of conveyance.

Lyttelton locals welcomed their visitors as only they can, staging one of the market days for which they are famous.

The town had previously been and still is very well served by a rail tunnel, but when the road tunnel opened in February 1964 it made an incredible difference to Lyttelton, alleviating the need to drive via one of the two hill routes, one of which is now closed post-earthquake.

The tunnel, which is 1.9 kilometres long, has become an even more vital link, with over 10,000 vehicles travelling thought it each day.

Tunnelling involved the removal of 152,900 cubic metres of volcanic rock which took a year to the day to complete.

The interior is lined with 1.25 million white tiles made by the Temuka Potteries, which if laid out would reach from Christchurch to Timaru.

It took 50 tilers working in shifts around the clock nine months to finish the job.

Because of its 1:38 gradient the Lyttelton end of the tunnel is 50 metres lower than the Heathcote entrance.

The tunnel authority building at the Heathcote entrance to the tunnel was designed by renowned architect Peter Bevan in a style depicting the Port Hills, harbour and the ships on which the early settlers arrived.

Sadly it suffered major earthquake damage, but has been replaced in a style reflecting the original design.

The building was the youngest ever Category One listed Historical Building in New Zealand.

Over 50 years the volume and type of vehicles which go through the tunnel has changed dramatically, but one thing hasn’t.

Many motorists still like checking the effectiveness of the horn in their car and the acoustics in the tunnel, which is one of the things which makes travelling through it fun.

Topless transport The recently formed Topless Car Group have a run scheduled for Sunday when their fun programme for the day will include a visit to the Stewart Car Collection in Christchurch.

Wales home of British MotoGP Wales will be the home of the British Motorcycling Grand Prix from 2016 in an agreement that could see it remain at the Circuit of Wales for 10 years, announced Moto GP commercial rights holders Dorna earlier this week.

The Grand Prix meeting - which was hosted by Silverstone last Sunday and saw the feature MotoGP race won by runaway championship leader Marc Marquez - will return for a year to Donington Park in 2015 but then move to Wales to a specially constructed circuit near the Brecon Beacons for the following edition.

“After having announced a long-term partnership with Dorna our priority was to find a racetrack for the 2015 race,” said Chris Herring, one of the directors of Circuit of Wales.

“It was in the interests of everybody, and especially the supporters of the sport, that a decision was taken as early as possible and we found in Donington Park a racetrack which shares our vision of the future of the British MotoGP.” The Circuit of Wales is a £280 million project with the aim of becoming the centre of the British motorsport industry with an ultra-modern circuit, which will be 3.5 miles (5.6km) long, the first in Britain to be built specifically for motorcycling grands prix.

It is also hoped that the centre will be a boost for industry and local tourism and help in the regeneration of the Blaenau Gwent region.

In brief Trophies missing Mid Canterbury Cricket are on the hunt for three missing trophies. Mid Canterbury Cricket’s Bob Bruhns is searching for the whereabouts of the Muirhead Rosebowl, JR Mounsey Fielding and all-round conduct Trophy and the Logan Talbot Trophy. “A club or individual has to have them somewhere,” Bruhns said.

“They are old trophies with a lot of history and we would like them back and the start of the season might be the best time to find them. The Talbot trophy was first presented in the 1950s and the other two were presented in the 1960s, but have disappeared in the last few seasons.” The missing trophies also need new names engraved, having been awarded but not physically presented.

The new season is just around the corner with a Mid Canterbury Cricket Board meeting on Monday that will finalise the dates for all the grades, with chief executive Garfield Charles saying they need to wait to get an idea of player numbers before deciding the format of the season.

Tournament week Hockey At the Johnson Cup in Greymouth Ashburton College lost to Rongotai 0-1 and meet Pakuranga College today.

Netball Ashburton College meet Cashmere HS in the fifth-eighth semi-finals at the South Island Secondary Schools’ netball championships in Invercargill today. They lost to eventual semi-finalist Southland Girls’ High School 22-37 before wins over Nelson Girls’ High School 29-28 and Verdon College 25-23 in the second round, having finished second in their pool behind semifinalist and last year’s runners-up South Otago High School. In B grade Mt Hutt College will play off with Timaru Girls’ High School in the ninth-12th semi-finals today.

In the second round they beat Ellesmere College 36-33 but went down to Buller High School 34-36 and Garin College 29-46.

Football At the Trident Tournament in Nelson, Ashburton College boys beat Marlborough Boys’ High School 2-0 and will play Scots College today in the ninth to 16th quarterfinals. In pool play they beat St Bedes 2-0, Northcote 3-1, drew 0-0 with Kapiti and lost to Ormiston 3-0. At the Gary Sowden Tournament in Christchurch the Ashburton College will play St Margarets for ninth place today after they beat Northern Southland 2-0 and then Menzies 4-1 yesterday. In pool play they beat Rangiora 4-1 but lost to Marlborough 3-0 and Nayland 2-3.

Basketball The Ashburton College senior girls’ basketball team opened their tournament yesterday with a 9952 win over Villa Maria and were due to meet Nelson Girls’ High School in their second match. They college boys lost to St Andrew’s College 53-81 and then had Christchurch Boys’ High School in their second pool game last night.

Safe path for Barrett

The recall of Israel Dagg at fullback, another significant

change which sees Ben Smith moved to the right wing in place of Cory Jane, will aid the All Blacks in terms of the territorial battle because few in Hansen’s side can match Dagg’s booming right boot, but there will also be a lot of responsibility on Barrett to strike the right balance.

The 23-year-old has waited a long time for this opportunity.

He made his All Blacks debut two years ago and has started in only two of 21 tests, both at fullback. Now the third-best first-five in the country gets his chance and he will be delighted by the opportunity.

With Dan Carter unavailable due to his broken leg, Colin Slade, named on the bench, has been handed the chance to play his first test since August last year.

Drivers will get down and dirty again on Sunday for the start of the new season at the Ashburton Speedway.

All of the grades will be back on the dirt track for the first time since the national title weekend in May, after the

end of season race meet was washed out in June.

As well as a return to racing there is the enticing offer of double points providing drivers the opportunity to make a good start to their season tally.

After the rain-ruined end of the last season, speedway president Lance Maher is hoping for

a sunny start to the new season.

“The forecast looks good and the track is in top condition,” Maher said. “Numbers should be good across the grades with plenty of people purchasing new cars in the off-season to get them out on the track or people who have done a lot of work on their existing rides wanting to

see how they go.”

Racing for the first round of the season gets under way from 12.30pm on Sunday.

It marks the start of another big season for the speedway with the DHL Saloon Speedweek making another stopover in December and the New Zealand Titles weekend in May.

In Nicholson’s case, he will be aiming for a third successive victory on the same horse, his 14-year-old grey gelding Avebury, a feat not achieved at the prestigious event. If he wins, it would also be his fifth title at Burghley, matching countryman Mark Todd’s feat.

For New Zealand team-mate Paget, last year’s Burghley is an event he’d rather expunge from his memory. He won on Clifton Promise, before the horse failed a doping test for an illegal substance called Reserpine. Paget returned to riding, his name cleared of any involvement in the incident and doubtless has a point to prove.

Paget pulled Clifton Promise up on the cross country run at last week’s World Equestrian Games, figuring that with his chance of a podium finish gone, there was no point burning the horse out with Burghley around the corner.

The reigning world and Olympic champions eased to a 98-71 win. But it was nowhere as one-sided as the Americans’ opening win over Finland. New Zealand gave a good account of themselves against their vastly more talented opponents and they even won the third quarter.

The result compares favourably to the Tall Blacks’ previous two losses against the USA; a 110-62 defeat at the 2002 world championships and a 102-56 loss at the 2000 Olympics.

The USA was led by its two starting big men. Anthony Davis top scored with 21 points, while Kenneth Faried scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Ashburton Hearing Association President Russell Anstiss welcomed 60 members to our Spring Dinner held at the Senior Centre on 29 August 2014.

We enjoyed a delicious roast meal and dessert, once again provided by Mrs Bev Opthoog and her helpers.

Russell then welcomed Denise Saussey, who kindly took time out of her busy schedule as clinical nurse manager of the mobile surgical bus to inform us about her work in the travelling operating theatre.

This private company employs a clinical nurse leader and anaesthetic technician which ensures the smooth running of a surgical list and provides the key link between the Unit, the local nursing staff and the surgeon and anaesthetist. A regular team of permanent part time staff work either one or two weeks on the Bus during the five week cycle around New Zealand.

Denise joined the team in 2010 where she has overall clinical responsibility to ensure a high clinical standard is maintained. Her work takes her throughout New Zealand, visiting rural areas where access to surgical procedures is difficult.

Ashburton is fortunate to be able to use the services of the bus a day per cycle for low risk elective day surgery, because of the loss of our quake damaged operating theatres.

Ashburton Senior Citizens The monthly social afternoon was held on Tuesday 12 August 2014 at the Seniors Centre, Cameron Street. As Hope was unable to be present Rose Stead played a lovely piano medley while the audience was being seated. Arthur Berry welcomed everyone and led the singing of Happy Birthday for all who had an August Birthday which he followed with another of his delightful jokes. Yvonne introduced the three ladies of the Piano group who were very well received.

Manny Sim plus his guitar was the next entertainer and sang “Falling in love”, “Help me make it through the night”.

John played a waltz medley on his keyboard and included “Brave little solider”, Dowell and Geordie came on stage to form the Grey lads and give us toe tapping music. Geordie told a lovely tale about a man walking along the beach.

Two minutes silence was held in remembrance of the late Alan Harcourt whose beautiful piano playing gave a lot of pleasure to our members. Manny sang Mull of Kintyre, Living Doll, Put Another Log on the Fire. The Three girls at the piano played Funicular. The Grey Lads played another selection including Rum and Coco Cola and Mary Ann and the Now is the Hour. Yvonne then thanked all the entertainers for a lovely afternoon. Thanks must go to all concerned for a lovely afternoon’s entertainment with a lovely variety of items which really enthralled the audience.

Ashburton Woodworkers Geoff Brown welcomed 25 members to Ken Newton’s demonstration of making a bridge lidded box of which he displayed two beautifully made examples.

Ken is a world renowned turner of ornamental boxes. He begins with a sketch, with dimensions. Blocks of wood are cut so that the grain matches with the lid. When turning the block he stresses the importance of having the bevel rub the wood to guarantee a clean cut He does the underside first including the chuck spigot. He hot glues a support to the bridge. The item is reversed it and turns the topside and creates an internal box. Then removes the bridge support and the item is reversed again with the aid of a chuck ring support ring. Using a special fine tool finishes the inside of the box. Turns and fits the lid. The article can be seen at the Lynn Museum in an unfinished state.

A new member Judy Christie was welcomed to the club and it was arranged for our two members currently hospitalised to be visited.

Members were reminded of our bus trip north to be held on September 25. President Jenette then introduced Jo Taylor from Latitude magazine to members. Jo told of the beginning of the magazine and gave us a profile of her employees after which she showed slides of some of the beautiful gardens the magazine has featured.

Cup campaigns step up a gear

Let the battle commence.

Finally we can start to put a lot of the talk and crystal ball gazing behind us and get down to some serious horse racing.

Tomorrow night at Addington marks the true beginning of the road to the New Zealand Trotting Cup. Eleven horses will contest the Maurice Holmes Vase, chasing not only victory but also automatic entry into the cup which is awarded to the winner.

So nobody is out there for a quiet one.

The Maurice Holmes Vase has proven to be a perfect stepping stone for some of the young pretenders to grab a jump-start on their more seasoned opposition and earn a start quickly as opposed to having to earn it later in the lead-up to the cup.

But this year they might have a small problem. And it comes in the form of Christen Me. The glamour boy of harness racing showed his talents in style when win-

ning the National Handicap last month and most will expect him to rock up and deliver much of the same this week.

He will face most of his pressure from up-and-comers Locharburn and Tiger Tara who have a bit to prove after finding themselves outside the top 15 rankings when they were released last week.

The former was brilliant fresh up when running second while the latter has looked good and strong in workouts and trials.

There will be plenty of reasons for fans of harness racing to get out to the trials in Mid Canterbury over the next week.

Starting at the Mt Hutt trials on Saturday is Dominion Handicap winner Master Lavros with Mark Jones looking at a race in a few weeks to kick off his campaign.

But it will be Ashburton on Tuesday when Terror To Love, Smolda, Hands Christian and potentially a few other key cup contenders step out that you won’t want to miss.

Former Mid Canterbury footballer Pieter Taco Bierema could have the best seat in the house on Sunday in New Zealand Football’s biggest domestic match, the Chatham Cup. The 87th cup final clash has defending champions Cashmere Technical take on five-time winners Central United FC of Auckland at QBE Stadium on Auckland’s North Shore.

The 19-year-old Bierema

plays for Cashmere Technical, who feature All White midfielder Aaron Clapham, and said he will find out at training tonight whether he gets to watch the game play out in front of him from the goalmouth or from the reserves bench.

“Chances are Danny (Knight) will be playing. He’s started the last few games and gone quite well but I guess we’ll see,” Bierema said.

“I’ve been backwards and forwards between the top team and

reserves this season playing a bit of both. It will be one of the biggest games of my career so far so it’s quite exciting.”

An outfield player in his junior days in Mid Canterbury, he moved into goal when he was 15 and quickly made an impression, making his senior debut for Mid Canterbury in May 2011.

He moved to Christchurch for his tertiary education, studying at Lincoln University, and playing for Cashmere Technical.

The prestigious trophy has

spent a year in the Cashmere Technical cupboard and the Christchurch side will be hoping they can return it there for another 12 months.

They bring some solid form to the final after they retained the South Island Football Championship title with a 3-0 win over Dunedin’s Caversham at ASB Park, in Christchurch, last Saturday – with Bierema on the bench.

In the Mainland Football Premier League, Cashmere Techni-

cal, went through the 21-game season with just one defeat, a 0-1 loss to Nelson Suburbs in May, to finish nine points clear of Western.

With the Premier League Cup, South Island Championship title and potentially a Chatham Cup after Sunday, Cashmere Technical have a shot at a fourth trophy next weekend when they meet Western in the English Cup final - Mainland Football’s premier men’s knock-out competition.

Hesson said he was keen to continue developing the young players who are coming through to the top level.

“It’s a really exciting time for the sport with the World Cup at home, our senior players performing well and a promising group of youngsters who are all fighting for world cup spots,” he said.
