Bye bye Blackbeard Hugh Jackman has shaved off his impressive swashbuckling beard. Jackman grew the beard earlier this year for his role as pirate Blackbeard in the upcoming Pan film. But the beard is now gone. Jackman visited a barber over the weekend for a good shave and took a video of the occasion.

In the video, posted on Instagram, Jackman is shown having the last of his stubble razored off before smiling at the camera and saying simply: “Over.” Jackman’s eyecatching face-fuzz had earned him the title of the celebrity with the sexiest beard in a poll by Britain’s Crown Clinic hair transplant centre.

Video rental chain takes films online Yet another player has announced its entry into the internet film and television arena. Video Ezy’s on-demand service allows users to “rent” videos by streaming them straight on to their TV, computer or tablet without setting foot inside a video shop. The announcement comes hot on the heels of the launch of Spark’s online TV service Lightbox and internet providers like Orcon and Slingshot offering “global mode” that allows viewers to access services like Netflix and BBC iPlayer that are not normally available in New Zealand. FBI investigates nude photo hacking Federal authorities in the US have started inquiries into the celebrity nude photo scandal. The FBI said yesterday it was addressing allegations that online accounts of several celebrities, including Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, had been hacked, leading to the posting of their nude photographs online. The agency did not say what actions it was taking to investigate who was responsible for posting naked photos of Lawrence and other stars. Apple said yesterday it was looking into whether its online photo-sharing service had been hacked to obtain the intimate images. Lawrence, a three-time Oscar nominee who won for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, contacted authorities after the images began appearing on Monday. Naked images purporting to be of other female stars were also posted, although the authenticity of many couldn’t be confirmed. The source of the leak was unclear. “This is a flagrant violation of privacy,” Lawrence’s publicist Liz Mahoney wrote in a statement. “The authorities have been contacted and will prosecute anyone who posts the stolen photos of Jennifer Lawrence.”

Oswald’s woolly tale Professional skier Pete Oswald will be able to spin this yarn for years. The Queenstown man was high in the Hector Mountains yesterday on a photo shoot for Snow Action Magazine with Southern Lakes Heliski when an exhausted sheep slid into his life. Mr Oswald said a piece of snow hit the back of one of his ski boots causing him to scan the slopes behind him. About 100m away he spotted “a little bundle of wool” at the bottom of a groove carved by the sheep as it slid down a steep, rock-strewn slope. He found the animal lying with its head tucked awkwardly under its body, but alive and “wriggling”. Mr Oswald raised it to its feet and “it was trying to walk away, but it was exhausted – it would take a few steps and then lose its footing.” He then picked up the ailing animal and, on his skis, carried it several hundred metres down the mountain to a flatter, grassy spot.

Accused did not have a gun licence

Ashburton accused double murder Russell John Tully does not hold a firearms licence, police confirmed as the investigation into the Winz shooting entered its second day.

The confirmation came soon after a bloodied and limping Tully appeared before Judge Joanna Maze, in the Christchurch District Court yesterday morning.

He offered no plea on charges of murdering Susan Leigh Cleveland, (known as Leigh) and Peggy Turuhira Noble at the Ashburton Winz office on Monday morning, and attempting to murder Lindy Louise Curtis.

Suppression on the names of the victims was not sought.

The 48-year-old homeless beneficiary will make his next appearance in the High Court sitting in Christchurch on September 23.

Tully limped into the dock in bare feet with bloodied bandages on his legs from dog bites suffered during his arrest.

He wore blue track pants and a blue shirt and his shaved head showed evidence of other scars and scratches.

Judge Maze declined applications to film or record.

At a press conference yesterday afternoon, Detective Inspector John Fitzgerald said police were building up a clearer picture of the events leading to

Tully’s arrest at about 5.30pm on Monday.

However, he would not be drawn how Tully came to be in possession of a gun.

Mr Fitzgerald said two joggers thought to have encountered Tully on the Ashburton River track shortly after yesterday’s tragedy had come forward.

About 80 police are still involved in the investigation, which is predominately centred on two crime sites.

Officers continued to search through hedges at Wheatstone, near Lake Hood. Cones remained placed around the entrance to a paddock, in front of a bike abandoned beside the road.

The examination of the Winz site was expected to take three or four days. A large blue tent used by forensic staff remains erected outside the offices.

Police still wish to hear from anyone who may have seen anything that might relate to their inquiry.

In particular, they wanted to know about sightings of a man wearing dark coloured clothing, a rolled up balaclava, dark backpack and riding or pushing a mountain bike.

Floral tributes start to flow

Tributes are pouring in for the two women gunned down in the Ashburton Winz office on Monday.

The Ashburton District Council has set up a condolence book for people to leave messages for the victims’ family and Social Development Minister Paula Bennett laid flowers near the site, and paused for reflection before speaking to media yesterday morning.

By mid-afternoon, the number of floral tributes was growing, with the road cones forming the police cordon serving as

vases for bunches of daffodils.

They were left with messages of condolence from nearby businesses, other MSD centres, clients and friends as a poignant reminder of the tragedy which took the lives of Winz staff members Peg Noble and Leigh Cleveland, and left Lindy Curtis seriously injured.

“Right now they just want to be together . . . talk it through.

Meanwhile, other people were joining a Facebook page dedicated to the women, to express their grief.

Titled RIP Peggy Noble and Susan Cleveland, the page is an indication of how many lives have been touched by the sudden and brutal deaths.

Condolence book opened Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew found it difficult to talk without crying yesterday as she spoke about the shooting rampage at Ashburton’s Winz office on Monday that left two dead and one person seriously injured.

Yesterday she worked with mayor Angus McKay to set up a condolence book at the Ashburton District Council office as a way to show the victims’ families that they were not alone in their grief.

“People are telling me they have a feeling of impotence and they’re asking what they can do. People say they want to do something concrete to help, but they don’t know what. Signing this book is one thing,” she said.

Mrs Goodhew also laid flowers outside the Winz office.

While she did not know the victims, Mrs Goodhew said she

had had regular dealings with the office and its staff.

“In New Zealand we don’t expect this sort of thing to happen anywhere, but particularly not so close to home. You can’t even think this has happened in another town, another suburb; it’s happened right here in our suburb. The tears are flowing and I’m telling people that it is alright to cry, it shows we care.”

Mayor Angus McKay said the condolence book was a way the community could rally and show its support for the victim’s families.

“Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to them and as a community we share our deepest sympathies,” he said.

The condolence book will be available in the council’s Baring Square office between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.

Emotions close to the surface

Emotions were close to the surface yesterday as social development minister Paula Bennett and Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew hugged outside Ashburton’s Winz office.

Ms Bennett was fresh from a meeting with Winz staff who she said were still coming to terms with seeing three of their number gunned down on Monday morning.

Two of the shooting victims have died while a third is in a serious but stable condition in Christchurch Hospital.

Russell John Tully has been arrested and charged with two counts of murder and one of attempted murder.

Staff were traumatised but were supporting one another through their grief, she said.

“They’re a tight group with their shared tragedy. Right now, they just want to be together to

talk this through. There are lots of tears and there’s the odd little bit of laughter too. They’ve not had much sleep and they’re still wavering between trauma and shock.”

As she spent time in Ashburton, Ms Bennett said she kept hearing stories of the people who were involved in the tragedy and the people they were.

“I’m hearing some fantastic things.”

Alongside that there was plenty of speculation over the tragedy and how it could happen, but there were no immediate answers, she said.

“We’ve been going through case files and will continue to go through files but everything I see, not just with our staff but with the whole community, people wanted to help and he was offered assistance.

“I am well and truly convinced he was offered every assistance.

There is no fault to be had by

any individual.” There had been good communication between agencies dealing with Tully, Ms Bennett said and good information sharing.

“They knew who he was approaching and they felt that a lot of what he was putting out there was misleading. He was certainly offered temporary accommodation, he certainly had accommodation options but he seemed to be fixated on one property.”

That property was a three bedroom Housing New Zealand property that was unsuitable for a single man and had been committed to a family, she said.

“Words I’ve heard used to describe him were manipulative and intimidating but no one foresaw this level of violence.”

At this stage Ms Bennett said she had not been in touch with the families of the shooting victims but said “They know we’re here if they need us”.

Peg ‘a shining jewel’ Mum feared the worst

Ashburton’s killer gunman has robbed victim Peg Noble’s family of a “shining jewel”, her niece Aroha Thompson said yesterday.

The 38-year-old Wellington and former Ashburton resident is on her way to Ashburton with her mother, Ms Noble’s sister, and other family members.

The family was not coping with the loss of Peg, killed in the town’s Winz triple shooting, she said.

“Yesterday was probably the worst day of my life,” Miss Thompson said.

Miss Thompson said Ms Noble would always be helping out her nieces and nephews in the wider Canterbury area.

For those needing financial assistance, she would help them draw up a budget, and was “always full of great advice”.

She and her friends would refer to her aunt affectionately as Aunty Peg. “It’s like he robbed us of such a shining jewel,” Miss Thompson said.

The 67-year-old mum of two and grandmother of four was an accomplished outdoor bowler, and used to play for Titahi Bay and represented Wellington, before moving to Ashburton about 20 years ago. She continued her passion for the sport in the town and played for the Ashburton MSA. She was originally from the Waikato and had settled in Wellington before moving to Ashburton. Miss Thompson said Ms Noble’s partner Don, a shearer was “destroyed” by the loss.

Ashburton RSA general manager Brenda Costello said Ms Noble and her partner had been regulars at club nights on Thursdays. She was a “fabulous lady”, “a character”, “well respected” and would be “sorely missed”.

There would be a minute’s silence in her honour at tomorrow’s club night.

Chairperson of the MSA ladies bowling club, Marie Harnett, said Ms Noble was a character. “We are a bit down in the mouth today to be honest,” she said after meeting with fellow club members yesterday for their Tuesday afternoon social cards day.

When Leigh Cleveland’s elderly mother Kathleen did not hear from her daughter on Monday after Ashburton’s shooting tragedy, she feared the worst.

Mrs Cleveland had earlier heard on the radio news that two Winz workers in the town had been killed.

“I rang her cellphone number straight away, it said leave a message, then I thought, well, if anything … if she was alright, she would have got in touch with me,” Mrs Cleveland said yesterday.

After the first Canterbury earthquake, Leigh, who had been living in Christchurch at the time, texted her sister to let Mrs Cleveland know she was okay.

“So I sat here all yesterday, trying to hope for the best, but I thought as the time went on, it’s not good.”

Later in the day, about 4pm, she was talking on the phone to that same sister of Leigh’s, when she let her know the police had just arrived at their brother’s and son’s house. “We knew then.”

Leigh, 55, was brought up in Alexandra, where Mrs Cleveland and Leigh’s two brothers and sister still live to this day. She moved to Fairlie to work with horses when she was a teenager, and later worked with the New Zealand Army Band. She had worked at Winz for over 10 years, about two-and-a-half years in Ashburton after transferring here after the quakes.

She never married or had children, and her dogs were her life. She initially had cocker spaniels, and a team she captained won a televised dog obedience show in the mid-1990s. She later went into breeding rottweilers.

Mrs Cleveland said Leigh had never mentioned any incidents of intimidating client behaviour at work, but thought if she had of survived the shooting, would not have wanted to go back.

Leigh’s friend, Debbie Renga, of Rakaia, said her death had left a big hole in her and her family’s life. They missed “the wonderful person that she was, and a great mate and a very knowledgeable lady”.

Being so good with people, she could see why she carried on working after retirement age.

One friend said she and her partner Don “were truly made for one another”.

A man at Ms Noble’s home said the family was not in a position to speak yet.

Ms Noble’s long-time neighbour Lyn Kamate, 63, yesterday paid tribute to “the most kind-hearted person I know”.

“I’m really going to miss her. She was a brilliant friend and neighbour.”

She was stunned by Monday’s events, and was baking for the “distraught” family.

She said Ms Noble was preparing to retire in the next 12 months.

“Peg was working and renewing everything in the house. She bought a fridge and gave one of my sons her other one and wouldn’t take any money for it.

“She loved her job, but she was renewing everything so she could give up work in the next year and have a good life after work.

“I said to Don yesterday - if she had retired she would still be here today... but things don’t work out that way, do they ...”.

She was seriously hurt when a man shot at workers in the Ashburton Winz office on Monday. She was in a stable condition in Christchurch Hospital and, through police, has asked for privacy.

Leigh’s two rottweilers Niko and Cameo, the latter which was part-owned by Mrs Renga’s son, were now with friends who had kennel facilities.

“They are feeling it, they are doing fine but they know something is up.”

She had been friends with Leigh ever since getting a rottweiler from her five years ago. Leigh ran a kennel, Charmak Rottweilers, from her Hampstead home, and had been a secretary of the South Island Rottweilers Club before it folded.

Another friend Robyn Anderson in Christchurch said Leigh had loved living in Ashburton after selling her home and buying in the town following the earthquakes.

She also loved her job.

“I think it’s helping people, that was just in her nature,” Mrs Anderson said.

She was a fantastic baker, brilliant cook and would live for dog shows at the weekend, and the pair had been looking forward to one in Christchurch this coming weekend.

Leigh’s next door neighbour Murray Cairns, said Leigh had been a quiet lady, and a private person.

He knew something was wrong yesterday after getting home about 5.30pm and not hearing the dogs bark as he arrived.

MSD takes threats seriously

With Ashburton still reeling after yesterday’s triple shooting in the town’s Winz office, the Ministry of Social Development is dealing with an outbreak of violent threats at offices around the South Island.

At 9.40am yesterday an irate man phoned the Blenheim office and threatened staff. The office was closed and armed police have been stationed outside the building.

A threat was also made to the Timaru office, which then closed for the day.

In addition there have been a number of threats round New Zealand to offices and staff. While some may be idle threats, police are taking each threat seriously and in some cases are closing sites until they are confident staff are safe, said the ministry’s chief executive Brendan Boyle.

“These threats are disturbing – it’s unacceptable that MSD staff are subject to such abuse in the wake of this attack. Naturally frontline staff are shaken by yesterday’s events and this is the last thing they need.”

Last year 150 threats were made against Winz and this year there have been 120 and each one of those was taken seriously, Mr Boyle said.

However, with the organisation employing 4000 staff and thousands of face-to-face interviews conducted each day, the number of threats as a percentage of face-to-face contacts was small, he said.

The Ashburton shootings will spark a Worksafe investigation and an independent security review.

“What has happened is tragic and it is extreme. We must ask ourselves, could we do more, should we do more?”

The Ashburton shootings had heightened security concerns for staff around New Zealand, Mr Boyle said.

“It’s important that people remain calm but that they know we do take any threat seriously.”

It was unlikely Winz offices would see glass barriers installed between customers and staff, he said.

“Our work brokers convince us they need to be face-to-face to do their job so we’d be very wary of turning the offices into fortresses.”

Former flatmate in shock

The man who rented a room to Russell John Tully weeks before he allegedly shot dead two women and seriously injured another has spoken of their time under the same roof.

The man, who wanted to be known only as Henry, said it had been years since he’d seen Tully, however he’d known him for a long time and wanted to give him a chance.

“He told me he only wanted the room for a month because he had a house to move into.”

Tully, who moved in with only a few possessions, including a fridge, mattress and some clothes in a bag, was fine at first but things deteriorated in his second week, Henry said.

Tully refused to pay bills and started trying to take over the flat, he said.

Initially he had been reasonably communicative and at one stage indicated his mother was still alive but said he hated her.

“He said, I’m the way I am today because of her.”

Tully also talked about living in the Tinwald Domain, just south of Ashburton, before moving into the flat, Henry said.

Tully spent most of his time in his room. He refused to eat off plates, lived off family size mince pies and used a tin mug from his rucksack.

“He had a major attitude. He was rude to my friends and ... I finally told him it was time to move on, to move out. I gave him two weeks’ notice but he moved that night,” Henry said.

The pair kept their distance when Tully moved out.

Tully also spent time at the Ashburton Holiday Park this year. Owner John Wood said he offered Tully a bed for one night as a stopgap.

Tully told him Winz had paid for a week’s worth of accommodation and he reluctantly let him stay on.

Another Ashburton local, who did not want to be identified, told the Herald she recognised Tully as a former classmate of her son.

“He was at Allenton School in his primary years. I don’t think he was particularly popular.”

Another local man said Tully had split with his wife and it was understood he was seeking legal advice over finding a Housing New Zealand home.

“He’d been a pig hunter in some of his early days,” he said.

Chilling new details emerge of shootings

Chilling new details have emerged about the terrifying moments three women were shot at Ashburton’s Work and Income New Zealand office.

And it has been revealed that CCTV footage of the gunman entering and exiting the crime scene was recorded at a nearby business.

A source close to the investigation has described how the killer is alleged to have picked his targets and even reloaded his firearm before shooting the third victim.

The alleged gunman, barged into the office on Monday morning, his face covered with a balaclava and brandishing a shotgun.

The source claims the gunman walked into the office and looked at a staff member, turned to first victim Peggy Noble and fired at her. She died instantly.

The gunman allegedly then turned and shot a second female staff member and stopped to reload his gun.

Seconds later it is alleged that he eyed up a customer, then spotted a third Winz staffer and pulled the trigger.

Staff at an electrical company across the road from Winz unwittingly recorded the movements of the killer.

He was filmed going into Winz, and only a minute later, coming out.

Electraserve general manager Blair Watson described the footage, which was given to police yesterday.

Mr Watson said his impression of the gunman was someone who was calm

and quite controlled. As he walked into Winz, Mr Watson did not believe there was a suggestion in his movements that he was about to go on a shooting rampage.

“He rode up on his bike and sat there for a couple of minutes quite composed before putting his balaclava on and got his gun ready,” Mr Watson said.

The footage shows the man then looked in the building’s windows and quite casually walked inside.

In less than one minute he came out and again his movements were unhurried. He casually put his gun in his backpack and then unlocked his bike. Still appearing composed, Mr Watson said he cycled off, leaving two people dead and a third injured.

Mr Watson said that while the camera did not show the gunman’s face, his movements were clear.

He only moved at pace once he was on his bike and someone was giving chase, he explained.

A Winz client told the Herald that she walked past the alleged killer as she went in to see her housing manager.

She saw what she thought was a long black stick poking out of his backpack, that she later realised was a firearm, and heard someone yelling at him. Not realising what was happening, she walked into the office.

“I thought ‘where is everybody?’ And then I looked down and saw a person on the floor covered in blood,” said the woman, still shaken last night.

“I was ushered out. It was so horrible. I got in my car and cried all the way home.”

Residents may lose parking

The fight by a handful of residents to have a preferential parking clause become part of the Ashburton District Council’s bylaws appears set to fail.

District councillors yesterday heard submitters speak against a bylaw that would have seen short strips of Wills and Cameron streets off limits to the public whenever events were held at the district’s new

art gallery and museum.

When hearings wrapped up, councillors deliberated and voted on a motion put by Alan Totty and Don McLeod that the resident only parking restrictions for Wills Street and Cameron Street should be removed from the council’s draft Transportation and Parking Bylaw.

Councillors were divided on the issue, with Rod Beavan, Darryl Nelson, Don McLeod,

Alan Totty and Neil Brown and mayor Angus McKay supporting the motion. Alasdair Urquhart, Stuart Wilson, Ken Cutforth, Russell Ellis and Martin Nordqvist voted against it.

This is the second time the council has voted on the bylaw; it became caught up in a voting technicality and had to be reheard.

Councillor Donna Favel did not vote because of a conflict of interest and Peter Reveley

stated he wished to take no part in discussion.

The parking debate was sparked after a side agreement was signed by council staff with five residents on Wills and Cameron streets. They wanted their street fronts kept vehicle free during events at the museum and art gallery.

The motion to remove the residents’ only bylaw will be voted on by council on September 18.

Rescue copter calls Westpac Rescue Helicopter had five calls to Mid Canterbury over the past week, three to Mt Hutt.

The helicopter’s crew airlifted a 21-year-old female with multiple injuries from a car accident at Westerfield on August 24. On August 26 the helicopter was called to Mt Hutt, and airlifted a 48-year-old woman with a spine injury to Christchurch Hospital.

On August 27 it was called to Mt Hutt and airlifted a 14-yearold girl with a broken femur to Christchurch Hospital. On August 29 it transferred an 84-year-old male to Christchurch Hospital from Ashburton Hospital. On Sunday it was called to Mt Hutt, and airlifted a 27-year-old male with a back injury.

New Zealand housing affordability is again under the spotlight with new international research putting our nation’s housing among the most overvalued in the developed world. The Economist magazine has looked at global house prices against people’s relative after-tax income and the price of renting.

It found New Zealand’s rampant housing market grew at 7.3 per cent in the last year, the sixth fastest among 23 surveyed nations.

Housing in this country was 74 per cent overvalued compared to rents, the third worst surveyed country. Only Canada on 76 per cent and Hong Kong on 79 per cent fared worse.

Kindergartens hold open days this week

Kindergartens around Ashburton promote child led learning/ play and will be open to the public viewing this week as they show people what they are all about.

There were five kindergartens in town; Aubrey Mason in Tinwald, Merle Leask in Netherby, Hampstead, Allenton and Thomas Street.

Thomas Street Kindergarten teacher Jacqueline ten Hove said the children, aged three and four, learnt through child led play but teachers had intentional planning strategies to enhance their learning.

The teachers took on board activities the children were interested in and developed them so the children enjoyed their learning.

morning and afternoon sessions as kindergartens were now open from 8.30am to 2.30pm each day with one full, mixed session.

The children could be at kindy for as long as the parents wanted or needed, she said.

Many parents took advantage of the Government’s free early childhood education with 20 hours a week paid for children aged three and above. The kindergarten also covered an additional 10 hours if the child was solely at the kindergarten for five days a week.

If people were interested they should talk to the kindergarten that suited them to find out more information.

Ms ten Hove said all kindergarten teachers were fully registered and had a ratio of four children to one teacher.

The kindergartens’ open days run from 9am to 3pm.

Racial abuse will not be tolerated.

That is the message Queenstown Taxis driver Ganesh Paramanathan wants the public to take from yesterday’s guilty verdict for the Queenstown policewoman who told him to “f*** off to India”.

“This will not be tolerated by the authorities,” Mr Paramanathan said. Jeanette May McNee, 44, was found guilty on one charge of offensive language stemming from an incident on November 3. No conviction has been entered after defence counsel Nic Soper said he would be seeking a discharge without conviction.

Police launch second criminal investigation A further criminal investigation into the collapse of Christchurch’s CTV building during the February 2011 earthquake will be undertaken, police say.

Detective Superintendent Peter Read said police had told the families of those who died in the building collapse of the decision.

One hundred and fifteen people died when the six-storey building collapsed in the quake.

The inquiry decision followed assessment and evaluation of a huge amount of information from a range of sources over the last 18 months, Mr Read said.

“Based on this information, we now believe there is sufficient evidence to warrant further criminal investigation into the collapse of the CTV building in February 2011.”

Police had engaged the services of engineering consultants Beca to provide an expert opinion regarding the cause of the CTV building collapse.

Beca was also asked to provide expert opinion on whether there were any serious departures from accepted standards by those involved in the building’s design or construction that could amount to gross neg-

ligence, Mr Read said.

“While police are still awaiting some aspects of Beca’s assessment, the bulk of this work has now been completed.

“Based on the work completed to date, police have reached the view that there is sufficient information to warrant further criminal investigation,” he said.

“That said, there is still a significant amount of work to be done before any investigation can be completed, the potential outcome of which is unknown.”

A group of investigators had been put together to gather more information and where necessary re-interview some of those who had previously given evidence at the Canterbury Earth Quake Royal Commission, as well as any others who could assist with the investigation, Mr Read said.

“The additional material gathered during this phase of the investigation will assist police in determining whether there is anyone who may be criminally culpable for the CTV building collapse.

“While it is still too early at this stage to put any timeframe around when that decision will be made, we will continue to keep all parties informed as we

work through the process.”

A police spokesman would not be drawn on whether police would be pursuing charges against any individuals involved

in the building’s design or construction.

“We’ve got sufficient evidence there to advance a criminal investigation. There’s still a lot of

National reaffirms its commitment to rebuild

By Isaac Davison National yesterday reaffirmed its commitment to the rebuild of Christchurch, but its proposed changes have been dismissed by Labour as an admission of defeat.

Prime Minister John Key announced this afternoon that the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) would be made an agency within the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.

This would allow CERA to have its functions wound down gradually instead of being suddenly cut off at its scheduled expiry date in April 2016.

Mr Brownlee yesterday said a transition plan would be put in place to hand back CERA’s powers and responsibilities to councils and other government agencies.

Labour leader David Cunliffe said National’s plan was nothing more than a name change for the agency tasked with fixing the city.

He said Labour had previously proposed the gradual scaling back of CERA, but the idea had been dismissed by National as a “fizzer”.

“The Government is tired and has run out of steam,” Mr Cunliffe said in a statement.

“It has no fresh ideas. Having

sat on its hands over the Canterbury recovery and allowed the rebuild to slide, the Government is now forced to adopt Labour’s progressive positive policies.”

Mr Cunliffe pointed to Labour’s policies including 10,000 new homes for the region, a special earthquake court for outstanding claims and a $100 million rail network.

In his speech, Mr Key said National remained committed to the Canterbury region.

He said the city had moved “firmly from demolition to construction” and the “hectic rebuild is only going to ramp up over the next few years”.

eg Noble mixed with her many friends at the RSA’s happy hour just about every week. Leigh Cleveland would relax with her Rottweiler dogs, a pair she loved like children.

Both worked at Ashburton’s Work and Income office. Both were in jobs they enjoyed. Both were shot and killed at work early on Monday morning.

Lindy Curtis was also hurt.

She was rushed to Christchurch Hospital and police swept through south-east Ashburton in the hunt for their suspect.

Traffic stood still as police cars rushed between staging points and places of interest.

Schools enacted security protocols, shops closed and people were told to sit tight.

Ashburton sat tight but it did not sit easy.

In the hours that followed, we began to know – but perhaps not understand – what had happened and who was attacked. But with every new detail, it still made no sense.

There was relief when a suspect was in custody late Monday afternoon. There was relief, but no end to the devastation that grew into the morning.

The names of the victims were released early yesterday.

The more we learned of the people many loved, the more a deep sense of sad disbelief grew.

Quietly, people left flowers at the cordon. Some left notes, held hands and stared toward the Winz building. People hugged beside the cordon. Friends comforted friends as they wept in the street.

On the radio and on the television, observers talked about Ashburton being tight-knit and resilient, and wondered how our town will cope with such tragedy.

The truth is there is no handbook or exemplar to guide the families, friends and a community who will live a life irrevocably changed by what happened on Monday.

From Ministers of the Crown to the ministers of our churches, there is no doubt people want to support each other through the tough times ahead.

We know to expect that sort of support in Ashburton. It will help us grapple with what we could never have expected.

I didn’t have to show my ID or anything. She was one of if not the best work and income staff member there ever has been. She was great at her job and will forever be missed. I do not know Peggy personally but I had dealt with her numerous times and every time I always got greeted with that same smile. You’ll forever be missed.

Sue Newman writes, “when the decision went to council, Mayor Angus McKay used his casting vote to have it thrown out.”

Will Mayor McKay confirm this, and that, it was in fact he who signed the mediated 48 condition protocol including the elite resident parking bylaw that facilitated the Art Gallery consenting process to succeed.

Now it is he, who wants to back track and break his own endorsed agreement and signature.

Does this mean we cannot rely on him and his contractual signature as a surety of, or on, an enforceable agreement.

I used my casting vote against the motion to maintain present council policy.

I signed the side agreement with the neighbours to facilitate the project moving forward. (The side agreement contains 9 clauses, not 48).

Legal advice received is that the side agreement does not override the fundamental obligation of the council to follow the statutory processes required for consultation and decision making under the Local Government Act. To ignore issues raised during consultation and to blindly adopt the proposed residents only parking in accordance with the side agreement would be an unlaw-

ful fetter of discretion and a breach of Council’s statutory obligations under the Local Government Act.

he Government’s Policy Statement on Land Transport (GPS) determines the amount of funding it will make available for roading maintenance and renewal.

The GPS plays a critical role in the overall ability of councils to efficiently manage their roads in a way that ensures their integrity isn’t compromised and they are kept to an appropriate level of service.

A draft GPS for 2015/16 to 2014/25 has been out for consultation.

The Local Government New Zealand’s (LGNZ) submission on the draft GPS is worth a read. The submission was made on behalf of all New Zealand local authorities.

It highlights the expectation that money gathered off each of the state highway and local council roading networks should approximately balance the expenditure allocated to these networks.

Presently, around 70 per cent of roading expenditure is allocated to the state highway network which, in terms of length, makes up only 11 per cent of the road network but does carry close to 50 per cent of vehicles. The remaining 30 per cent of roading expenditure is assigned to local council roads which make up 89 per cent of the length of the network.

A study by one council found that across the country between $350 million and $400 million of funds generated on local authority roads are currently being invested on the state highway network.

The Government’s Roads of National Significance programme (RoNS), is of course addressing some of the long-standing problems with our state highways. However, allocating funds to RoNS should not be at the expense of maintaining the overall roading network.

on New Zealand’s rural roads.

The draft GPS unfortunately continues to focus on improvements to the state highway network at the expense of local roads. That won’t help to maximise economic growth and productivity.

A BERL report commissioned by LGNZ identified that for every tonne of freight per kilometre on the state highway network associated with exports there is between 1.3 and 1.8 tonnes of freight occurring per kilometre on the associated local road network. It is important that a corresponding investment in local authority routes occurs alongside the state highway investment.

LGNZ recommends better phasing of the RoNS programme and releasing some of the funds to address issues on existing local road infrastructure.

Their submission notes that the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) annual report for the year ended June 2013 shows that there was underspending against the plan of more than $40 million in

the Local Authority Activity Classes. There is some frustration that councils couldn’t get their hands on the funding at a time when they are looking to maintain the integrity of their roading networks and optimise whole of life costs.

The constraints on local authority GPS funding over the last three years mean that many councils are struggling to meet their stewardship obligations to their communities to maintain their existing roads.

Thankfully this draft GPS does include a modest 3 per cent increase for maintenance and renewals of local roads on the GPS 2012 allocations. However, a 3 per cent increase won’t meet the growing demands of increasing freight and or ageing infrastructure. Those costs are expected to be met through efficiency gains. That is a very big ask.

The transfer of funds from the local council network to the state highway network at the current level for an extended duration is unlikely to be sustainable.

made its own submission on the draft GPS. We said that our district generates significantly more revenue for the National Land Transport Fund through road user charges than is returned in the form of NZTA co-investment.

The local road transport sector which is the source of this revenue has justifiably high expectations in terms of levels of service.

With funding decreasing in real terms, it is becoming increasingly difficult to meet these expectations.

Sufficient funding from road user charges and levies must be returned to local councils to complement the ratepayer funding that is invested in roading.

This will allow local councils to provide ‘fit for purpose’ local and regional roading networks as part of the wider land transport system which supports a productive economy.

The draft GPS and submissions can be viewed on the respective organisations’ websites.

‘No military solution’ UN Secretary General Ban Kimoon has warned Western powers there is no military solution to the Ukraine crisis, after the government in Kiev accused Russia of launching a “great war”.

As NATO prepares to upgrade its combat readiness in eastern Europe, Ban said he was greatly concerned at developments in Ukraine and wanted to avoid further deterioration to “a very chaotic and dangerous situation”.

“I know most of the Western countries are discussing very seriously among themselves how to handle this matter,” he told reporters during a visit to New Zealand.

“What is important at this time is that they should know there is no military solution in this. There should be a political dialogue for a political solution, that is the more sustainable way,” Ban stressed.

His comments came after European-mediated talks on the fast-escalating crisis opened on Monday behind closed doors in the Belarussian

capital Minsk, attended by Ukraine government, separatist and Russian envoys.

The rebels have launched a major counter-offensive in recent days that the Ukrainian government and its Western allies claim is backed by Russian forces - a charge Moscow denies.

Ukraine’s Defence Minister Valeriy Geletey vowed to “immediately mount defences against Russia, which is trying not only to secure positions held by terrorists before but to advance on other territories of Ukraine”.

“A great war arrived at our doorstep, the likes of which Europe has not seen since World War II,” he wrote on Facebook, warning of “tens of thousands of deaths”.

Russian agencies quoted rebel representatives at the Belarus meeting demanding that Kiev provide the separatist regions of Donetsk and Lugansk with a “unique procedure” that would let them integrate closer with Russia.

Snake on road trip A carpet python has gone on a 3000km round trip through two states, carried by a man while he doorknocked homes in Victoria.

The 1.8-metre scaly road-tripper, which normally resides in habitat near Lismore in NSW, was found in the possession of a man in Victoria. The man snatched the coastal carpet python from the wild and took it to the Victorian town of Tallarook, where police picked him up while he was doorknocking houses, the Department of Environment and Primary Industries said.

DEPI senior wildlife officer Gary Dash yesterday said it was an offence to remove protected animals from the wild.

Fiji has revealed for the first time the demands that are being made by Al-Qaeda linked Syria rebels who took more than 40 UN peacekeepers hostage in the Golan Heights. Fiji army chief Mosese Tikoitoga says the rebels want their organisation, the Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front, to be removed from the UN’s list of terrorist organisations. He says they also want humanitarian aid sent to a small town which is an Al-Nusra stronghold just outside Damascus and are demanding compensation for three of their fighters hurt in recent days.

Ebola test developed Japanese researchers say they have developed a new method to detect the presence of the Ebola virus in 30 minutes, with technology that could allow doctors to quickly diagnose infection.

Professor Jiro Yasuda and his team at Nagasaki University say their process is also cheaper than the system currently in use in west Africa where the virus has already killed more than 1500 people.

“The new method is simpler than the current one and can be used in countries where expensive testing equipment is not available,” Yasuda said.

“We have yet to receive any questions or requests, but we are pleased to offer the system, which is ready to go,” he said.

Yasuda said the team had developed what he called a “primer”, which amplifies only those genes specific to the Ebola virus found in a blood sample or other bodily fluid.

Using existing techniques, ribonucleic acid (RNA) - biological molecules used in the coding of genes - is extracted from any viruses present in a blood sample.

This is then used to synthesise the viral DNA, which can be mixed with the primers and then heated to 60C to 65C. If Ebola is present, DNA specific to the virus is amplified in 30 minutes because of the action of the primers.

The by-products from the process cause the liquid to become cloudy, providing visual confirmation, Yasuda said.

The defamation trial of a British activist has begun in Bangkok after he co-authored a report alleging widespread labour abuses in Thailand’s food industry, a prime supplier of cheap foodstuffs to Western supermarkets. Andy Hall, 34, faces jail if convicted over lawsuits brought by Thai fruit processor Natural Fruit, after his report levelled accusations of forced and child labour, unlawfully low wages and long hours at one of its factories. Natural Fruit is a major supplier to the European drink market.

Michael O’Neill strangled his boyfriend Stuart Rattle with a dog leash, then brewed him a cup of tea and talked to the renowned interior designer’s lifeless body as if nothing had happened. O’Neill continued his life as normal for five days while Mr Rattle lay dead in their Melbourne home, spending the weekend at their country retreat, dining with friends and attending business engagements. He even set the table for two and poured glasses of wine for his partner of 16 years. O’Neill set fire to the South Yarra apartment last year to try to conceal his crime. O’Neill, 48, yesterday pleaded guilty to the murder and arson.

The miners at the Burton Mine in central Queensland each received a text message from Thiess last week telling them they had been made redundant. “We wish to inform you that your position at Burton will no longer be required. Alleged fraud involved $2m Rose, or companies under his control, allegedly issued invoices of approximately $2 million to MRP for “goods those companies sometimes didn’t provide or services that were instead performed by Mr Rose himself or others”, the SFO said.

The SFO said Jane Rose was also involved for some time in the alleged offending, which according to the agency took place between 2005 and 2012.

A SFO spokeswoman said the Roses, both 42, were husband and wife - at least at the time of alleged offending.

MRP chief financial officer William Meek said the charges relate to a historic matter and that any financial impact was absorbed into past accounts.

The company has changed its procurement and inventory management process to mini-

mise the “risk of recurrence”.

The alleged offending came to light following a investigation by MRP, which referred the matter to the police. It was subsequently referred to the SFO, which began an investigation in April 2013.

On 20 June after being asked to wear his eye protection Mr Hall verbally abused Mr Rutherford and attempted to continue his work, using a dimension saw.

Mr Rutherford turned the saw off, reiterating the requirement for eye protection.

Again Mr Hall verbally abused Mr Rutherford.

Mr Rutherford suspended Mr Hall and arranged a meeting with him for 22 June. They discussed the two serious misconduct allegations; refusal to wear safety glasses, breaching the company’s health and safety requirements, and Mr Hall’s behaviour toward Mr Rutherford, using threatening, abusive and insulting language.

After due process Mr Rutherford decided to dismiss Mr Hall.

A new film to be directed by Lee Tamahori is hoping to raise the final 5.3 per cent of its $9.4m budget via equity crowd funding on the Snowball Effect platform, offering investors preferred shares with a 20 per cent per annum return. The film The Patriarch, based on the ‘Whale Rider’ author Witi Ihimaera’s novel Bulibasha, is looking to raise a minimum of $300,000 from New Zealand investors via equity crowd funding.

The project is hoping to lure investors after Tamahori’s success with his first, and to date only, New Zealand film, Once Were Warriors.

Filmed on a $2 million budget in 1994, it went on to return $6.5 million to New Zealand investors, the offer says.

Craig Hall was dismissed for repeatedly not wearing the required personal protective equipment (PPE), and for offensive, abusive and threatening behaviour towards his supervisor, Neil Rutherford.

Mr Hall, an experienced joiner, had worked for A Step Up Joinery Limited in Dunedin since July 2010.

He claimed he was unjustifiably disadvantaged and unjustifiably dismissed.

He sought remedies of $4000 lost wages and $20,000 compensation.

However, Mr Hall did not attend his Authority hearing but he had provided a document as evidence, ahead of the hearing date, which included a chronology of events from his perspective.

The Authority decided to proceed with the available information and make a determination.

They took into account the employer’s evidence about the many times they had asked Mr Hall to wear the required PPE; specifically eye protection.

The employer had replaced the style of glasses to address Mr Hall’s concerns that the previous pair were uncomfortable.

NZX-listed Mighty River Power has been caught up in an alleged $2 million employee husband-and-wife fraud.

The Serious Fraud Office has aid four charges against Paul Kenneth Rose and two against Jane Clare Rose for obtaining by deception.

Paul Rose worked at MRP’s Penrose gas-fired power station as an electrical engineer until December 2012 and it was part of his role to identify what equipment was required to be ordered or services provided for that plant, the SFO said yesterday.

Classic dishes given the Gault twist

S

imon Gault is probably one of the most familiar faces in the world of food.

He’s a restaurateur, chef and familiar television presence, but above all else, he is personality plus.

While most of the foodie stars who front television programmes have a following that divides into love/hate camps, with Simon, what’s not to love. He’s probably the only food critic who could tell you the dish you’d prepared was a total failure.

Unlike many top chefs, Simon doesn’t have a long string of cookbooks to his name, but his latest, Modern Classics is a must buy. He’s taken a range of dishes that have become Kiwi classics and given them the Gault twist.

He’s drawn on his vast international experience to pull together a recipe collection that will be at home in any kitchen.

The recipes are ones Simon believes are essentials in any good home cook’s repertoire.

Two recipes from his book follow:

Potato gnocchi These pillows of potato heaven are the perfect Italian pasta to make without a pasta machine.

Take care to ensure the potatoes are cooked and dry when put through the sieve or ricer, or your gnocchi will be heavy and grainy. Gnocchi freeze well, so you can pull them out for a lastminute meal and finish with sage butter. Serves 6.

1 free-range egg 2t salt 1/2 t nutmeg 270g “00” flour, plus extra for dusting 4T butter 16 sage leaves freshly ground black pepper to taste shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano to serve ■ Preheat the oven to 180°C. Wash and thoroughly dry the potatoes, then bake until soft (about 1 hour). Cool slightly, then while still warm, press through a potato ricer or sieve into a bowl, discarding skins. Using 1kg of potato flesh, make a well in the centre and add egg, salt, nutmeg and some of the flour. Mix well and keep adding flour until you feel the dough come together. Add more flour only if the dough feels sticky.

■ Place a large piece of baking paper on the bench or a large wooden board, dust with flour and lightly flatten dough into a rough square about 1.5cm thick. Cut into strips 1.5cm wide – a plastic dough cutter is good for this because it won’t scratch. Keeping

your hands dusted with flour, roll the strips into skinny sausage shapes on a not-too-floury part of the board, then move them onto a more floury part until ready to cut. Cut into 1.5cm pieces. Roll these over the tines of a fork to give the traditional ridged shell shape if you wish, but it’s not essential. Keep the gnocchi on a floured tray (they can be freeflow frozen at this stage).

■ To cook, drop the gnocchi into a large saucepan of heavily salted boiling water. Remove with a slotted spoon as soon as they float to the surface.

■ In a frying pan, heat the butter and sage leaves until the sage turns crisp. Add the gnocchi and coat completely in the sage butter. Top with freshly ground black pepper and shaved Parmigiano and serve.

1 orange 150ml orange juice juice of half lemon 1t sugar 1t red wine vinegar 2t chicken stock concentrate 2 duck breasts, skin on and trimmed salt and freshly ground black pepper 2t butter Kumara mash 650g steamed kumara 75ml cream 75g butter 2T maple syrup salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1/2 C pecans, toasted Green beans wrapped in prosciutto 14 green beans, cooked 2 slices prosciutto 1t olive oil

and pith and cut the segments out of the membrane. Squeeze any juice from the membrane into a small bowl and add the grated zest, orange juice, lemon juice, sugar, vinegar and chicken stock concentrate and set aside.

■ Score and season the skin of the duck breasts. Place skin side down in a warm, dry frying pan and cook slowly until the fat renders out (about 4–6 minutes, depending on the thickness of the breasts). Turn over, increase the heat and continue cooking until done to your liking (8–12 minutes in total, depending on the thickness of the breasts). Strain the fat into a bowl and refrigerate to use for cooking the sauce. Set the pan aside. Cover duck in tinfoil and set aside to rest.

■ Meanwhile, for the kumara mash, place the hot steamed kumara in a food processor. In a small saucepan, scald the cream, then pour into the food processor and add the butter and maple syrup.

Pulse the kumara until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste, briefly pulse again, then pour into a serving dish. Fold in half the pecans and garnish with the remainder, if wished.

■ Divide the beans into 2 bundles of 7. Wrap a slice of prosciutto around each to secure. Place on an oven tray, drizzle with the oil and roast until the beans are heated through (this can be done a day or 2 in advance and kept in the refrigerator).

■ Heat the pan and add the orange juice mixture, then bring to a simmer and reduce by half.

Add the butter and, when almost completely melted, remove from the heat and give the pan a good shake to bring the sauce together. Add the orange segments.

■ Serve the duck with the orange sauce, kumara mash and beans wrapped in prosciutto.

Art funds lifelong love of flying Selwyn painter Michael Osborne has funded his lifelong passion of flying through the sale of his artworks.

Taught art by Geoff Hughes at high school, he went on to complete courses at Otago Polytech and university, with the aim of becoming a fulltime artist.

However, he went into sheep farming instead, helping on the family property in Otago, and continued with his other passion, flight training.

While working towards his commercial pilot’s licence he started painting aircraft for fellow students.

What started out as being the odd artwork here and there for topdressing pilots, later turned into a series of paintings of aircraft he had flown, such as Spitfires, Hurricanes and Mustangs.

Mr Osborne has created scenes of warbirds in action over New Zealand and has completed many commissioned works for ex-RNZAF Aircrew.

He has produced more than 300 artworks over the span of about 40 years.

He had his first solo exhibition in 1976, followed by two other exhibitions in the 1980s, of a range of his works.

A few years ago, he took 12 large oil paintings to the Wanaka Air Show.

This was a pivotal point in his career and marked the beginning in a new era of devoting his time and dedication to mainly aviation paintings. Many of his works remain in private collections, not available to the public.

Terrace Downs art director Rachael Inch said she was honoured to present a special exhibition at the resort this month.

Flying High will open at Terrace Downs on September 19 at a dinner function, and be available for viewing to the public during resort open hours until October 29.

In its second year, the competition will hold auditions around the country in October and November.

Last year more than 6000 New Zealanders signed up and around 1.3 million viewers tuned in to watch the final.

Auditions will be open to anyone over the age of 14, and those who make it past the pre-audition stage will go on to perform in front of four judges who are yet to be announced.

Football Ashburton College boys’ 1st XI football team drew with Kapiti College 0-0. The boys remain unbeaten but both defences were far too strong with few chances being created. Donon Ashby earned Most Valuable Player from the opposition coach. They will play Ormiston College next. In Christchurch the girls’ 1st XI team lost against Nayland College 2-3.

Nayland had the more skilful players in a very exciting game.

Hockey In Ashburton the girls’ 1st XI drew with St Peters from Gore 1-1. Home goalkeeper Kyla Smith kept the opposition at bay with some vital saves. The girls did not give up the entire way through the game. They played Heretaunga College in a late game.

Netball The senior girls’ netball team won against Opihi College in Invercargill 53-11. The win meant Ashburton went through to the top 16 of the draw. The girls played to their fullest extent as goal difference depended on progression to the top 16. They were to play Southland girls in a late game.

In Dunedin, Kings Juniors defeated Waitaki Boys 96-49. They were able to achieve such a high lead by everyone putting the team before personal glory. They will compete against Shirley Boys for fifth and sixth place. The junior girls just lost out to Otago Girls High 50-51. The girls played brilliantly in a game that ebbed and flowed throughout.

The loss meant they came fourth in the tournament.

Early start for Kiwis The New Zealand women’s golf team is feeling right at home in Japan for the Espirito Santo World Amateur Teams Championship.

The Kiwis have completed their preparations at the Iriyama and Oshitate courses of the Karuizawa Golf Club and will begin their campaign in the first groups from 6.45am local time (9.45am NZT) tomorrow alongside Puerto Rico and 2012 medalists Finland. Man U spending up Manchester United made a sensational double swoop on transfer deadline day to sign Colombia striker Radamel Falcao on loan from Monaco and Holland international Daley Blind from Ajax.

Blind’s arrival, in a STG14 million transfer, had been expected, but the signing of prolific 28-year-old frontman Falcao was a major coup for the ailing English giants. “I am delighted to be joining Manchester United on loan this season,” Falcao told the United website.

“Manchester United is the biggest club in the world and is clearly determined to get back to the top.”

United are reported to have agreed to pay Monaco a fee of around 10 million euros to secure Falcao’s services for the season, with an option to make the deal permanent for 55 million euros.

Holiday over for Adams

By SuSan Strongman Hundreds of fans lined up along Auckland’s Queen St yesterday to farewell Kiwi NBA star Steven Adams before he heads back to the US for his second season with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The 7 foot (2.1m) tall 21-yearold’s first game of the 2014-15 season is on October 29 and he says the thing he will miss the most about being away from home is the food.

Although he once found a pie in Colorado, he said it was “missing the love.”

Crowds of adoring fans formed a line about 50m long down central Auckland’s main drag yesterday afternoon to see Adams at the Foot Locker store.

Pakuranga college pupil and avid basketball fan Lavon Tuimana, 15, was waiting to get her ball signed.

“I’m star-struck, he was the main reason I wanted to play basketball,” she said.

Tongan like Adams and his sister, Olympic gold medallist shot putter Valerie Adams, was an inspiration.

“Basketball isn’t really popular in New Zealand, but he’s showing Kiwi kids that anything could happen.”

Ms Tuimana plays in her school’s under 17 basketball team and said her coach had told them to follow Adams.

“He inspires our whole team,” she said.

Rotorua-born Adams said it was strange to be recognised on the street in his home country.

He’d tried wearing a hoodie and hunching himself over to disguise his height, but people still recognised him.

“I’ve learned to like it,” he said.

His family still treated him the same when he was back home though: “Nothing’s changed. “ I still go back home to my family and they treat me like crap.”

Murray, Djokovic face off

By Darren Walton Andy Murray was too smart, too respectful to say he was finally returning to championship-winning form ahead of his US Open quarter-final showdown tonight with Novak Djokovic.

But Murray was certainly pleased to set up the grand slam blockbuster with a “stress-free” straight-sets fourth-round win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

The less time on court against Tsonga, the more energy he’ll have to try to bring down the indefatigable Serbian world No.1.

The last time Murray and Djokovic clashed at Flushing Meadows, the Scot won the longest final in US Open history, a four-hour, 54-minute test of endurance and skill that ended Britain’s infamous 76year grand slam men’s singles title drought.

Eight months earlier, Djokovic took four hours and 50 minutes to put Murray to bed in a similarly epic Australian Open semi-final in Melbourne.

“We play a fairly similar style and I think that’s why a lot of the matches have been long games, long rallies, long points because we do a lot of the same things well,” Murray said after nullifying Tsonga’s explosive power to progress with a 7-5 7-5 6-4 win yesterday.

Murray is into his 14th consecutive grand slam quarterfinal, Djokovic his 22nd in a row - the Serb’s run of excellence bettered only by Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors.

“I’m very glad obviously that I had so many consecutive quarter-finals of grand slams.

“Andy, well, I think also he performs his best in the grand slams ... in the big matches, as the tournament progresses, he’s still fit.

“He still plays very high quality tennis.

“That’s what I expect him to do.”

It’s what Murray expects from himself too.

“That’s really why we play the game.

“That’s what you put the work in for, so that when you come to these events and you do have to play against the best players that you’re ready,” he said.

“As much as it’s incredibly tough and challenging, the match, that’s what you

enjoy, playing on Wednesday, Wednesday night against the No.1 player in the world.

“It is exciting. If you aren’t getting motivated or pumped for those matches, then that’s when there’s a problem and it’s time to maybe stop.”

Murray hasn’t reached a final - of any sort, at any level - since beating Djokovic in last year’s Wimbledon decider.

Since then, the 27-year-old has endured back surgery, split with Ivan Lendl, dipped down the rankings and shocked the tennis world in June with his appointment of Amelie Mauresmo as his new coach.

But he hopes it’s all finally coming back together in New York.

“I don’t feel like I’m that far away from playing my best tennis,” Murray said.

“Obviously winning tennis matches does build up your confidence.

“It’s still obviously a long way from trying to win the tournament, but it’s only nine sets now, three matches, and (I’ll) just try and take it one set at a time.

“Maybe (I’m) five, six days away from potentially winning another grand slam.”

Broncos ‘undaunted’ It may not make pretty reading but Brisbane centre Dale Copley admits he can’t argue with Melbourne’s remarkable record against the Broncos. However, Copley says Brisbane are not daunted by the prospect of sealing an NRL finals berth with a win in Melbourne on Friday night after being “lucky” enough to play must-win games the past fortnight. Copley initially admitted yesterday he couldn’t remember the last time Brisbane won in Melbourne. No wonder.

Fame catches up with weary Bouchard

By Dave James Fame finally caught up with Eugenie Bouchard in a groggy, dizzy conclusion to her grand slam season, which ended in a fourth-round loss at the US Open.

The 20-year-old Canadian golden girl, playing her 58th match of a breakout year in which she reached the semi-finals of the Australian and French Opens and took the runner-up

spot at Wimbledon, went down 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 to Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova yesterday.

It was a disappointing way to end her US Open, but she admitted her status as the new poster girl of the women’s game had probably played a role.

Yesterday’s match was played in the crushing heat and humidity of the afternoon, whereas her last two matches had been in the prime night-time slot on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“I was feeling very lightheaded and dizzy on the court, just seeing things a little blurry. I just generally didn’t feel good,” said the seventh seed.

“I have had a few late, tough matches here, and I don’t think I fully recovered from those.

“The doctors think the heat got to me a little bit. And they know I probably was more tired than usual from the past few matches.

“I think I did well to push my-

self through those matches, but I also need to have the endurance. I haven’t had that in the past few months, basically. So it’s not a huge surprise to me.”

South Sydney coach Michael Maguire wants to douse the on-fire Roosters halves while having to do without the usual spark from one of his own. The final round NRL local derby at Allianz Stadium on Thursday brings together two of the competition’s hottest teams.

The reigning premiers have won five straight and the Rabbitohs have won six of their past seven.

Maguire identified the Roosters’ ability to build pressure, especially through halves Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney, as a key factor in the premiers late season surge. “They are really on fire at the moment, they are performing well,” Maguire said yesterday. ““We’ve done our homework and we need to make sure we nullify everything they are doing.” - AAP

In brief Salubrious sevens Organisers of the Wellington Sevens remain supremely confident they will be granted a special licence to sell alcohol at next year’s event, which also features an enhanced entertainment package. Following a review of this year’s tournament, the police and Spotless, who hold the licence as contractors to Westpac Stadium, agreed that the sevens would become a special case outside of the venue’s standard alcohol licence. The 2015 instalment of the tournament will begin on Waitangi Day and will feature an earlier start time of midday in a bid to put people off pre-loading, which can lead to excessive intoxication.

No more kicking - Luatua Steven Luatua will leave his kicking boots at home as he eyes his likely role off the bench for the All Blacks this weekend against the Pumas. The loose forward was the villain turned hero for Auckland in Sunday’s 16-all draw with Tasman in the ITM Cup Premiership. His wonky clearing kick handed Tasman an easy try, but he made up for it with a crucial second-half score, his fourth for the province, in an almost identical spot. “I’ll probably put away the kicking skills and just focus on my core roles. When I stuck to that, I went all right. Now I understand why kickers are always under pressure. We give them flak for not getting a nice kick away, but in the heat of the moment it’s pretty tough.”

Axing tough, says Foley Wallabies flyhalf Bernard Foley admits his surprise Bledisloe benching was a bitter pill to swallow, but believes it will only drive him to be a better Test player in the long run. Foley has been promoted back into the No.10 jersey for Saturday’s Rugby Championship Test against South Africa in Perth at the expense of NSW Waratahs team-mate Kurtley Beale. Beale’s initial selection at No.10 for the two Bledisloe Cup clashes came as a shock to many, especially considering he had been playing at inside centre all season.

That was compounded by the fact that Foley had not only just led and kicked the Waratahs to a maiden Super Rugby title days prior, but also steered the Wallabies with aplomb two months earlier in the three-Test cleansweep of France.

“Off the back end of it all it definitely was something to swallow,” Foley said. “Going forward that’s always going to drive me to be a better player.”

All Blacks back in the wet

By Patrick Mckendry The All Blacks pride themselves on being able to cope with any conditions, and Saturday’s test against Argentina in Napier could give them a chance to prove they can play just as well in the wet as in the dry.

Their demolition of the Wallabies in perfect conditions at Eden Park last time out put a black line under that stalemate in Sydney which was played in constant rain, but the expected wet conditions at McLean Park against a physically bigger and tougher opponent than Australia will provide an opportunity to show they have more than one dimension to their game.

Added to the examination is Argentina’s unique defence, which could be ideally suited to the conditions.

They have the ability to get very narrow on defence - offering what looks like oodles of space on the outside - and then very quickly shut that space down.

Any handling errors by the All Blacks as they look to take advantage of that space are likely to be quickly seized upon.

The Pumas’ kicking game has also improved to the point where they offered South Africa very few opportunities to counter-attack in their 33-31 defeat in Salta recently.

Combine that with a very combative forward pack - a group of extremely large men who can be difficult to shift and the All Blacks face an energy-sapping night.

day spoke of the unique way in which they defend.

“They offer a different proposition to Australia,” he said.

“It’s a system we’ve been aware of and they’re very, very good at it, that ability to come up and shut you down and also to push very hard into those outside channels.

“It’s not the easiest to combat but it’s something we’ve been working on for the last couple of years.”

The Pumas’ attacking mindset against the Boks in Salta nearly got them the win they deserved, but it could get them into trouble against the All

Blacks, who are probably the best counter-attacking team in the world.

If the visitors are careful with how they attack - and they must have seen how Israel Folau’s stunning run for the Wallabies ended in a try for Julian Savea at the other end at Eden Park - their kicking game will come under severe scrutiny.

Both Foster and fullback Ben Smith believe it is an area of improvement for the Pumas.

“They’ve always been great natural punters of the ball but now they are starting to intertwine that with a smarter strategy of where to kick it,” Foster

said. “Rather thank just kicking it long or high I think they are becoming a bit more thoughtful.

“There weren’t a lot of counter-attacking opportunities last week for South Africa so clearly Argentina did a really good job of that.

“We want to pressure that part of their game, we want to make sure when they do kick we get some ball on our terms.”

Smith said: “They’re definitely kicking a lot smarter and not giving teams space to counter, that’s been a big part of their game over the last couple of weeks.”

When will Barrett get his starting orders?

By GreGor Paul Starting Beauden Barrett at No10 for the All Blacks is a bit like trying to get pregnant there’s never a good time for it to happen.

The selectors want to see him start at first-five before the World Cup kicks off next September.

He’s done plenty from the bench but, given the injury toll that struck their No10s in 2011, the All Blacks think it would be wise for Barrett to have experienced starting a test at first-five at least once before then.

His only other test starts being at fullback, against Italy in 2012 and Japan last year.

Barrett was set to start at first-five earlier this year in Hamilton until Conrad Smith broke his thumb in the second test and the selectors decided they didn’t want to make two changes to their midfield, sticking with Aaron Cruden.

The test against the USA in November and the one two weeks later against Scotland would be obvious games for Barrett to start at first-five, but Daniel Carter has once again muddied the waters.

Carter is expected to have recovered from his broken leg later this month and, having been on sabbatical for the first six months of this year, the plan may well be to run him into

form on the European tour, as happened last year.

Gazing into the crystal ball, Barrett’s opportunities to start are limited, which is why this Saturday’s test may be the right game for him to be given the jersey he covets.

The intrigue on that front mounted yesterday when his girlfriend tweeted: “All good things come to those who wait”.

Could Barrett have been shoulder-tapped by coach Steve Hansen?

The perils of the modern age warn against reading too much into a cryptic message posted through social media.

Those inclined to brand that

tweet a red herring could point to the fact that Cruden played his best test for the All Blacks at Eden Park and it would make no sense to reward him with a seat on the bench.

And yet perhaps that’s precisely why the selectors feel they should inject Barrett this week.

It would be unusual for this selection panel to make a nonenforced change but then again, there are different rules when it comes to first-five.

Coming off the bench after having had time to assess the opposition is a specific skill Barrett has acquired.

But it’s a different business starting.

“He’s a big, strong impressive horse. He’s beaten Long John and Shamus Award and then things went wrong,” Busuttin said.

“Ollie (Damien Oliver) said he seemed to work nicely this (Tuesday) morning through the heavy going and he had a good blow afterwards.

“He’ll certainly take improvement from whatever he does on Saturday. Ollie trialled him up last Friday and was

pleased with how he went so we expect a good run on Saturday.”

Busuttin said their preference was to start Cauthen, who hasn’t raced for nearly seven months, in the Drummond.

Lankan Rupee’s trainer Mick Price, who has prepared the sprinter to claim three Group one titles, has already said that he expects his stable star to win the McEwen on Saturday.

Neighbourhood Support is a community initiative working to: 9 Create safer more caring communities 9 Reduce the incidences and effects of criminal offending 9 Strengthening communities’ networks 9 Improve quality of life Ashburton District Neighbourhood Support is looking for an individual to lead a new phase of growth for the organisation across the Ashburton District. Although we currently have a good base to work from we are looking to further grow membership of Neighbourhood Support in rural areas of our district. As such we require someone with a proven track record in building relationships with individuals from a wide array of backgrounds and strategic partnerships with groups, businesses and organisations. Your role would be to maintain, grow, promote and coordinate Neighbourhood Support across the Ashburton District maintaining existing partnerships and seeking new opportunities to support this work. It is envisaged the coordinator will spend the majority of their time out and about making connections and building relationships. You would be required to pound the pavement and knock on doors so you must be comfortable with working in this way.

This position is for 20 hours per week and is based at the Ashburton Police Station.

LET’S TAKE A FRESH LOOK AT RUBBISH

Ashburton District Council is proposing to change the way we collect rubbish and recycling.

The proposal is to introduce a wheelie bin service for recycling and to provide the option of either the current bag service or a wheelie bin service for rubbish collection – you choose.

We would like to know what you think of the proposal and what you think is best for our community.

Rookie Ashburton jetsprint navigator, Shama Putaranui, is a world champion.

Putaranui helped guide New Zealand driver Peter Caughey to his fifth World SuperBoat crown at the World Jetpsrint Championships in Lebanon, Oregon yesterday.

Caughey said it was a demanding track, with rocks, stones and shallows to catch the unwary, and the longest they’ve raced.

Only two boats cut under a 60-second time, with the Kiwi pair’s win after they stopped the clock on 57.718 – some 10 seconds more than he’d expect on New Zealand’s shorter tracks.

As for the inexperienced Putaranui, it was her first world championships and after only a handful of competitive races, with Caughey quick to thank his team and “of course Shama Putaranui stepping in to navigate, and doing a great job.”

“Shama and the team worked so

hard for this result, it’s been a great team effort at every level,” Caughey said.

“It was always going to be a tough competition.

“We expected both Greg Mercier and Phonsy Mullan to push us hard, and there was a whole list of racers there with really good equipment or a very good driver we’d need to watch.”

Australian Mullan had more than his fair share of mechanical and boat gremlins, but he persevered and came through with a good result overall, a 59.236, “especially considering some of the grief they’ve had, even changing motors between the rounds”.

As for the Kiwi husband-and-wife Mercier team, they were the only other pairing to cut under the minute, to finish third.

The track was considered to be quite demanding, and in the morning Caughey and Putaranui spent almost an hour walking it before racing started, testing the depth with a technique Caughey learned when he started out on river tracks here.

“I literally throw stones into the water to see how deep it is at critical points, to suss out which corners you can cut and which parts don’t have boatable water.

“You can tell by the sound, by the splash what depth of water there is.

It’s a slow process but a good one.”

“The track needs intense concentration and often you’re better to attack it than be too conservative.

“Yes you need to conserve your equipment for the elimination runs, but if you’re too timid the boat could get off line, if you’re too aggressive, especially with a high-powered boat like these, you can end up arriving somewhere faster than you’re ready for and that can end very badly.”
