An Ashburton woman has been ordered to pay $34,000 to Housing New Zealand to cover the cost of having her state house cleared of methamphetamine contamination. The Tenancy Tribunal has ordered the woman and a former Whangarei tenant to pay remediation costs that total $54,000. And this demonstrates that a tough line will be taken when methamphetamine contamination is identified, chief operating officer Paul Commons said. “We welcome these decisions and we
will not be taking a backward step in addressing this issue. The rulings send a strong message to all of our tenants – Housing New Zealand will not tolerate criminal activity in its homes and we will move swiftly to end tenancies when it occurs,” he said. Mr Commons said the tribunal’s ruling was also positive news for the taxpayer as it meant the cost of remediation work would not fall on public shoulders. “This also indicates that we are being more vigilant than ever in retrieving costs from offending tenants.” The Ashburton tenant was ordered to pay $33,176. decontamination and waste disposal, $24,925. While HNZ was taking a hard line on tenants involved in any form of criminal activity, Mr Commons said the issue of methamphetamine contamination was not just a HNZ issue, it was an issue communities across New Zealand were facing across all social backgrounds. “As a responsible landlord, our policy is to not knowingly permit tenants to live in a property that registers readings above Ministry of Health levels.
