An Ashburton woman has been ordered to pay $34,000 to Housing New Zealand to cover the cost of having her state house cleared of methamphetamine contamination.

The Tenancy Tribunal has ordered the woman and a former Whangarei tenant to pay remediation costs that total $54,000. And this demonstrates that a tough line will be taken when methamphetamine contamination is identified, chief operating officer Paul Commons said.

“We welcome these decisions and we

will not be taking a backward step in addressing this issue. The rulings send a strong message to all of our tenants – Housing New Zealand will not tolerate criminal activity in its homes and we will move swiftly to end tenancies when it occurs,” he said.

Mr Commons said the tribunal’s ruling was also positive news for the taxpayer as it meant the cost of remediation work would not fall on public shoulders.

“This also indicates that we are being more vigilant than ever in retrieving costs from offending tenants.”

The Ashburton tenant was ordered to pay $33,176. The bulk of this came in

decontamination and waste disposal, $24,925. While HNZ was taking a hard line on tenants involved in any form of criminal activity, Mr Commons said the issue of methamphetamine contamination was not just a HNZ issue, it was an issue communities across New Zealand were facing across all social backgrounds.

“As a responsible landlord, our policy is to not knowingly permit tenants to live in a property that registers readings above Ministry of Health levels.

Restrictions on fires lifted after quiet season

Antique fence dates back to 1863

Mid Canterbury is once again in an open fire season.

Fire restrictions were lifted and an open season declared as of midnight on Tuesday night, marking the end of one of the quieter summer fire seasons Mid Canterbury’s rural firefighters have experienced in recent years.

Ashburton’s principal rural fire officer Don Geddes said firefighters had prepared themselves for the worst this summer due to some worrisome forecasts, but the concerns had come to nothing.

“It was relatively quiet which was good, certainly given the doom and gloom merchants who said we were going to have these dry conditions and high fire risk,” Mr Geddes said.

The summer did start off warm and dry, and fire restrictions were put in place prior to Christmas, but an unusually cool and damp January meant they were lifted in late January, before being put back into place when the weather warmed up and the countryside dried out again some weeks later.

Mr Geddes said apart from one day – March 10 – there had not been a huge number of rural fires requiring the services of local volunteer rural firefighters this summer.

“Way back in November we

had a couple of weeks when we had a couple of fires when it was quite dry, but it soon came wet again,” he said.

On March 10, firefighters were stretched to their limit though.

They were called to a large fire in the Rakaia Gorge – on Glenfalloch Station – early in the morning and around 50 firefighters and two helicopters with monsoon buckets spent much of the day trying to bring it under the control.

Later in the day, a power wire sparked a fire on Tramway Road, near Mt Somers, which threatened homes and saw just as many firefighters, and a plane, spend another few hours bringing it under control.

That day was hot, and nor’west winds were blowing; but that was one out of the box. Mr Geddes said hot, nor’west days were not a rural firefighter’s friend in the summer, but fortunately they’d not been faced with too many this year.

Now, with the bulk of the rural burning season done, and dewy mornings, cooler temperatures and shorter days now upon us, the need for fire restrictions had diminished, so the decision was made to lift them.

Although it’s an open fire season again, under Environment Canterbury’s outdoor burning rules no outdoor burning is allowed at any time in Mid Canterbury’s urban areas.

Members of a Hakatere Heritage Project working bee stumbled across a fence which they believe dates back to 1863 this week.

The group was preparing for the 4WD Hakatere Safari to be held in the Mid Canterbury high country this Sunday.

Spokesperson David Howden said parts of the fence had been buried over time by nor’west winds, and some of it had been replaced by more modern fencing.

The group was aware that some of the antique fencing may remain in the high country area, after reading a book which referred to R. B. Booth’s historic writings in First Five Years in New Zealand.

Mr Booth referred to the first standard-and-wire fences for controlling grazing stock being erected in the high country in 1863.

The fence was found on what is now Department of Conservation land in the Manuka Lake and Double Hut area. It is part of the former Clent Hills Station, named as such by Thomas Rowley who took on the property in 1859.

He owned it through to 1865, so would be likely to have overseen installation of the fence, according to Mr Howden.

“We sort of suspected it would be somewhere on the run, we were just thrilled to actually find it,” Mr Howden said.

He said members of the party more or less stumbled across it, and it was interesting to see the wire used on its strainers was number 10 wire, thinner than the number eight wire which was to become so common on farmland throughout New Zealand.

The safari on Sunday would encompass an area adjacent to the fenceline, which stretched for up to eight kilometres.

Mr Howden said DOC was planning to remove old stock fences from its land, so the

Sunday’s safari is being run by the Mid Canterbury 4WD Club, with proceeds going to the Hakatere Heritage Project.

The safari was last held three years ago. It will begin with registration at the Stour River Bridge, 15 kilometres up the Ashburton Gorge Road from Mt Somers, at 8am with a 9am departure.

It will be a 55 kilometre round trip from Barrosa, exiting out the top of Lake Heron.

Hard-up struggle with funeral costs

At one of the most vulnerable times in their lives, a growing number of Ashburton people are struggling to pay a family member’s burial costs, an Ashburton funeral director says.

While there is a taxpayer-funded grant available to help cover basic costs, the gap between the $2000 grant and the final bill is too large for many to bridge, Barry Hayman says.

The Ministry of Social Development has a means tested grant available, but the reality is the cost of even the most basic funeral has now far outstripped the money available, Mr Hayman said.

He supports a push by the Funeral Directors’ Association to have the grant limit raised and while the number of people accessing the fund is not large, it is growing. Nationally 4918 grants were paid last year by the MSD. “Funeral directors have been

talking with Government about getting the financial grant increased to make it more reasonable; it’s certainly not reasonable at the moment,” he said.

Like most funeral directors, his company also faced having to deal with people who were unable to pay the difference between the grant and the cost of a funeral, Mr Hayman said.

“If that’s the case we will try to look at options for paying this off, but it’s much better if people are

straight up and talk to us about their financial situation first and we can trim things to suit. It’s important to talk at the start.”

Funeral businesses, however, were on-call 24 hours, seven days, and that meant there were some costs that could not be pruned, he said.

A budget funeral costs between $6000 and $8000, he said.

There was another and possibly less well known fund, however, that was also available to help

with funeral costs for a person who died as the result of an accident, he said.

This money is provided by ACC and is available if a doctor or coroner signs off a death as being the result of an accident. This grant is about $6000.

“The ACC grant is definitely much more realistic and people don’t have to pay this back. We’re certainly proactive as funeral directors in letting people know about this.”

Museum’s new director settling in to role P-house

Tanya Robinson says becoming the Ashburton Museum’s new director has made her the envy of her colleagues in the industry.

The mum of two adult children began in the role last week, filling the position left by retiring manager Michael Hanrahan.

Ms Robinson is originally from Hawke’s Bay, and worked in museums, managing archives and arts administration in the region.

She has also worked across the Tasman, spending the past three and a half years in museum development at a large regional museum in Armidale, New South Wales.

An exhibition she curated was about to go on tour throughout three states in Australia.

She said she was pleased to be back in New Zealand, and was particularly pleased to have come to Ashburton, due to its exceptional facilities.

“Having spent time in Australia, I have discovered a town of this size would never dream of having a facility of this size. New Zealand is very fortunate, but Ashburton is particularly fortunate,” Ms Robinson said.

A strength was it had its art gallery, museum, archives and family history group all housed in the one building.

“I would say our storage facilities are second-to-none,” Ms Robinson said.

“When colleagues knew I was coming here they were most envious; in a lot of museums you are working in very poor conditions.”

Ms Robinson had previously spent time in the South Island, mainly Dunedin where both her children were born. Living in Ashburton was a new experience, but one she was so far

enjoying. “I’m very interested in learning more about the district and getting to know our community, as well as the staff and volunteers.”

She was looking forward to an upcoming exhibition the museum would be presenting in conjunction with the art gallery and Ashburton District Family History Group. It would be in the foyer and include an installation

recognising World War One veterans from Mid Canterbury, and include displays and a poppy making project.

She said in taking over from Mr Hanrahan, she had “big shoes to fill”.

“With all his local knowledge and experience. He was very much responsible for getting the museum into this wonderful new building.”

Providing that healthy environment once P-contamination had been identified, however, did mean houses had to be removed from the letting pool for up to three months and that meant people on the waiting list were forced to wait even longer for accommodation, he said.

A HNZ spokesman confirmed that the property in question was treated in the last quarter of 2015 but could not confirm whether the contamination was from manufacture or use.

“The majority of all P issues, however are from consumption rather than manufacture,” he said.

While a neighbour might be aware of a property being treated for contamination, they would not face any risk because unlike a substance such as asbestos, P contamination was not airborne, the spokesperson said.

HNZ was committed to keeping its properties safe for tenants but it was also committed to recovering costs around decontamination, he said.

A successful training provider working with Mid Canterbury teenagers has received funding for part-time support.

Salvation Army Education and Employment principal tutor Heather Daly said the youth mentor position was part of a New Zealand-wide initiative.

Funding is available for 7.5 hours per week and involves working with students enrolled in NCEA subjects at levels one and two.

Ms Daly said many of today’s teenagers were under pressure to engage in risky behaviour, but her students were “all fantastic kids” who needed a helping hand to enable them to achieve their goals.

ficult to concentrate in a noisy classroom, she said.

While the programme is based on the army’s Christian principles of acceptance and respect, it is not religious in any way.

“We don’t swear, or tolerate gang colours or bullying. Everyone is equal when they walk through that door,” Ms Daly said.

Wheat and Wheels Rally on track for opening

With just a day left before the gates open, a team of vintage machinery enthusiasts is hard at work at the site of this year’s Wheat and Wheels Rally on Christys Road.

Yesterday volunteers from the Ashburton Vintage Machinery Club and the local branch of the HQ44 South Military Collectors’ Club were preparing for the thousands expected to visit the two-day rally to be held on Peter Butterick’s farm over the weekend.

Organiser John Hall had hauled his whare in to serve as a smoko room for the men in the lead up to the event.

“The phone’s still running red hot with people wanting to bring machinery along,” Mr Hall said.

Despite the last minute notice, the committee hasn’t turned anyone away.

“We’ve been marking out the sites and the marquee will be going up this afternoon,” he said.

The first of the machinery is expected to roll through the gate tomorrow morning.

Banks back as a JP Former politician John Banks will be back in court next week but it will be a much sweeter occasion this time. The ex-ACT party leader will be sworn in as a Justice of the Peace at Auckland District Court on Monday after he gave up the role in 2014 amid allegations of filing false electoral returns.

Having cleared his name, and been awarded $66,200 in costs earlier this month, Mr Banks is set to resume his role as a JP. Auckland Justices of the Peace Association president Selwyn Haworth confirmed the former politician would be among eight people being added to the 2200 JPs across the city.

A 14-year-old boy allegedly rammed into a police officer’s car and didn’t pay for petrol, police say. The existing national flag’s winning margin remains unchanged in official referendum results announced yesterday. With all votes counted, the current national flag received 56.6 per cent of the vote, compared to 43.2 per cent for the alternative, silver fernthemed flag. This meant the result was unchanged from preliminary voting announced last Thursday.

The existing national flag won a total of 1,208,702 votes – a winning margin of around 287,000 votes.

Mid Cantabrians will have their chance to air any concerns they have about the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade deal with the Minister of Trade on his roadshow stopover in Ashburton tonight.

As part of 50 roadshows, Hui and meetings around the country, Todd McClay will outline what the yet to be ratified TPP will mean for New Zealanders.

Previous roadshow stops have been host to lively debate with much discussion centred on fears of prescription medicines increasing in price and fears of loss of sovereignty among Maori.

Grow Mid Canterbury business development manager Rene Artz said he hadn’t been notified of any formal protest and there were no preparations under way should protesters decide to make an appearance.

Around 70 members of the public had registered for the event with Mr Artz still taking registrations today.

Forecasters believe the TPP will be worth an additional $2.7 billion to the New Zealand economy by 2030 although critics have been unhappy with the speed at which subsidies will be removed, particularly in the dairy industry.

A spokesperson from the Minister of Trade’s office said the over-riding message to take away about the TPP was that it was about regions and jobs.

Meetings had been exceptional so far, with good turnouts, the spokesperson said.

“People are just interested in hearing the side of the story that is not the rhetoric.

There’s been a whole lot of misinformation through-out the whole process.”

The Minister would highlight sector savings that would be achieved by the agreement, particular to the Canterbury region.

Descendants sought An English town is trying to trace descendants of local women who married New Zealand soldiers after meeting in World War One. The coastal Essex town of Brightlingsea was used as a training base for thousands of New Zealand and Australian troops during The Great War 1914-18. Now, Brightlingsea Town Council and Brightlingsea Museum are holding a series of centenary commemoration events in June to mark the historic link.

Organisers are also trying to trace the families of Brightlingsea women who married Kiwi soldiers and moved Downunder after the war.

Trapped under deck Firefighters have rescued a baby who was trapped under a deck in West Auckland yesterday. The 18-month-old crawled under the low deck of a Te Atatu house where his mother wasn’t able to reach him. When a fire crew arrived, a firefighter crawled under the deck to be with the baby while others used their hand tools to lift up a section of the deck so the infant could be lifted out. St John ambulance paramedics checked him but the boy was fine, said station officer Peter Cranwell.

Opening date set next week

Ashburton should know by next week when the doors of its newest pizza place will open.

Domino’s New Zealand is expecting to announce next week when its Ashburton store will open, and then the hunt for staff to front the international pizza franchise’s Ashburton store will

begin. Last month Domino’s New Zealand communications manager Emma Barnes confirmed a franchise was coming to Ashburton and said they aimed to have it open by late April.

That date should be confirmed next week, she said yesterday, and they’re on the hunt for 10 to 15 people to staff it, including in-store roles and delivery driv-

ers. The roles will mainly be parttime.

Domino’s Ashburton will open in a purpose-built building on Dobson Street, behind KFC, which has been built by the landowner.

The franchisee will be a local man, but Domino’s New Zealand is yet to confirm his identity.

“But he is a local, he’s got expe-

rience in food, and he is just busting to get in there, and the market is busting for us to get in there,” Mrs Barnes said.

Domino’s social media accounts had been receiving requests from people to open in Ashburton for some time, but it hadn’t been that easy. The right site and the right franchisee had to be found.

Increase in gastro bugs ‘due to the season’

Joint collaboration to benefit disabled

Access to Ashburton will be improved for many thanks to a soon-to-be-launched pilot programme run through a local driving service.

CCS Disability Action and Driving Miss Daisy NZ Ltd are launching the new pilot scheme to better support mobility parking users nationwide.

From April 4, Driving Miss Daisy – which is owned and operated in Ashburton by Christine and Brian Sandrey – vehicles will be able to utilise Mobility Parking Permits when transporting disabled people and those with mobility issues.

Until now, Mobility Parking Permits had primarily been issued to individuals with disabilities. Some organisations like residential providers had organisation permits for use when transporting people they support, but taxi companies had not been able to use the permits.

As part of the pilot, drivers could also identify passengers with mobility issues who didn’t have a mobility parking permit and encourage them to apply for one.

GPs or medical specialists have to approve a person’s application on medical grounds.

Melanie Harper said her drivers transported around 20,000 New Zealanders a year and around 90 per cent had mobility issues, or were disabled. However, not all people had mobility parking permits. By teaming up with CCS Disability Action she believed her company would be able to help improve people’s access to their community.

CCS Disability Action national manager projects and partnerships Peter Wilson said while 123,000 people currently used the Mobility Parking Scheme, there were eligible people out there not applying for a permit.

Mr Wilson said his organisation had partnered with Driving Miss Daisy because it provided additional “support services” to many of its passengers, including accompanying people to appointments if they needed help.

“There are many taxi companies in New Zealand doing a great job in supporting disabled people. What the pilot scheme means is that Driving Miss Daisy vehicles, unlike other taxi companies, will be able to park on mobility parks while dropping off or picking up a disabled person.

“If the year-long pilot works well we may consider entering into discussions with other companies,” Mr Wilson said.

Today is the last day skiers and snowboarders have to buy an early bird Mt Hutt 2016 season pass.

Ski area management late last year announced the drastically reduced price of $299, and sales will close at midnight tonight.

Manager James McKenzie said yesterday there had so far been a “substantial increase” in early

bird sales compared to previous years.

Sale activity picked up yesterday as the deadline approached, and he expected there to be a last-minute flurry today.

He said the increased sales pointed to a “ripper of a year” ahead on the ski slopes, with increased visitor numbers.

“We are trying to promote a resurgence and interest in snow sports, we definitely have, we can

The ski area had spent about $1 million on improvements over summer and had a couple of weeks of finishing off work to go.

It was increasing its snowmaking capacity, including the addition of new fan guns.

Last year just one of the super guns had been at the top of the Fascination run, but this would increase to three to four guns over the mountain this year.

“That will be exciting because that gives us a huge amount of capability,” Mr McKenzie said.

A new beginner trial, named Inside Leg, had been installed between Highway 72 and Broadway, and a new terrain park zone had been added to the mid mountain area.

Extra road barriers, and increased area in food and beverage spaces were also being introduced.

Summer is the season for gastro bugs, according to a local doctor.

Yesterday the Guardian reported on Mid Canterbury’s high rate of campylobacter, said to be amongst the highest in OECD countries.

A series of Facebook posts in response to the story confirmed a lot of people have suffered from stomach upsets in recent weeks.

However, Ashburton GP spokesperson Mick Tarry said there was often a seasonal increase in gastro illnesses associated with the warmer weather and he didn’t think the problem was more pronounced than other years.

“At present there is no particular prevalent strain with individual illness either being caused by viruses or bacteria,” he said.

“Diarrhoea can be a feature of influenza-like illnesses as well.”

Dr Tarry said concerns about drinking well water should be measured against other ways gastro bugs can be transmitted, such as poor personal hygiene and food handling techniques.

If people had specific concerns about water contamination it would be advisable to have the source tested, he said.

Drinking untreated milk, which has not been correctly stored, was another matter and had been reported as a source of some gastro infections, including campylobacter, some ecoli infections and shigella.

“Pasteurised milk is completely safe provided it is refrigerated and consumed before the use-by date, pasteurisation continues to be an important factor in minimising TB (tuberculosis) worldwide,” he said.

Busy with building projects

Mid Canterbury schools are in for a busy year with renovations, building projects and refurbishments.

A rise in school rolls around the district has been the catalyst for many of these while others are general maintenance.

Last year, due to roll growth, Ashburton Borough School received funding from the Ministry of Education for four new modern learning classrooms.

The foundations have now been laid and students are due to be in the rooms by July.

Principal Sam Winterbourn said renovation work on their performance centre, which has been ongoing since last year, is also going well and should be completed in the next few weeks.

Rakaia School principal Mark Ellis said his school will be getting a new modern learning environment which is the equivalent of four classrooms for their Year 5-8 students.

The work is going smoothly and should be done by the beginning of Term 2.

Hampstead School’s building projects include two new classrooms, a meeting room and a teacher resource room to provide extra capacity for their growing number of students.

Allenton School has not had as much luck with no Ministry of Education approval for new classrooms due to not enough evidence of expected roll growth despite being near capacity and having Year 1 and 2 students making up nearly

half the school. Principal Graham Smith said a junior class is currently in the old dental clinic and a class will need to be based out of the library by Term 3.

Methven Primary School has received approval for three new classrooms but is still waiting for work to start.

However, principal Chris Murphy said the Ministry of Education is in the process of arranging temporary classrooms that will see the school through

until the completion of the new rooms.

“Hopefully they will be here by the start of next term,” he said.

Other schools have builds in the planning stage but have not yet started including St Joseph’s School, Dorie School and Wakanui School.

Refurbishments will be done at Carew Peel Forest School, Tinwald School and Lauriston School.

Dentistry on Parkside is now bigger and better than ever, following renovations to add more surgery space.

Owner and principal dentist Michael Holdaway said the renovations were now complete and the practice was utilising every inch of space.

Former Prime Minister Helen Clark declined yesterday to say whether she plans to enter the contest as United Nations’ Secretary-General but hinted it could come later in the process. “Nothing to announce right now,” she told reporters in Wellington during a return home.

Asked if she had had any formal discussion with the New Zealand Government about her nomination she said: “I really don’t have anything to say about it today.”

She said there was a process under way and that included formal interactions between candidates and General Assembly members in a couple of weeks’ time. “Then the formal process moves to July for the Security Council to start deliberating. When that will be finished, who knows.”

The panoramic x-ray has a cephalometric arm used for orthodontics and is also equipped with the technology needed to take 3D pictures.

“We use that for the surgical removal of wisdom teeth, and we also do quite a few surgical im-

plants here,” he said.

The technology results in an accurate picture of the shape of the bone and also the location of important anatomical features.

Extra space has been allocated for the x-ray machine and a recovery room has also been included in the refurbishment.

Dr Holdaway said it was important to have a recovery area, especially since the practice did a lot

of intravenous sedation and had recently also started using nitrous oxide.

However, it’s not only the look of Dentistry on Parkside that has changed, staffing too has undergone a few adjustments.

Back in February the practice took on another dental hygienist and now has a new full time dentist, with a former part-time dentist taking on more hours.

An elderly man is in hospital in a critical condition and police are appealing for sightings of a shirtless man after an alleged assault in Wellington yesterday.

The incident happened in Mahora St, near the Pak’nSave in Kilbirnie, at about 9.50am. Detective Senior Sergeant Warwick McKee said the victim was an elderly male who has been taken to the Wellington Hospital. His condition has been described as critical, he said.

Officers are speaking to a man found in the area and have appealed for sightings of a man walking along Mahora St at about 9.50am.

Hijacker mentally unstable A man described as “psychologically unstable” hijacked a flight from Egypt to Cyprus and threatened to blow it up.

His explosives turned out to be fake, and he surrendered with all passengers released unharmed after a bizarre sixhour standoff.

As more became known about the motive of the 59-year-old Egyptian who was taken into custody yesterday, authorities characterised the commandeering of the EgyptAir jetliner not as an act of terrorism but more like a “family feud” with his former wife.

The aviation drama ended peacefully on the tarmac of Larnaca airport on the island nation’s southern coast with the surrender of a man identified by Cypriot and Egyptian authorities as Seif Eddin Mustafa.

The incident was likely to renew concerns about Egyptian airport security months after a Russian passenger plane was blown out of the sky over the Sinai Peninsula in a bombing claimed by the Islamic State group.

But Egyptian officials stressed that their security measures were not to blame, and there was praise for the EgyptAir flight crew. Pilot Amr Gamal told The Associated Press: “We rescued all the people and the man got arrested.”

At some point, the hijacker claimed to have explosives in his belt and forced the pilot to fly the Airbus 320 to Cyprus, Egyptian authorities said.

Egyptian passenger Farah elDabani told the Dubai-based Al-Arabiyah TV network that the hijacker was seated in the back of the aircraft and that it was the crew who told passengers that the plane was being hijacked.

“There was panic at the be-

ginning, but the crew told us to be quiet. They did a good job to keep us all quiet so the hijacker does not do anything rash,” she said in a telephone interview.

After the jet landed in Larnaca about 9am, the hijacker asked to speak to his Cypriot ex-wife, who was brought to the airport, and he sent out a letter from the aircraft to give to her, said Cypriot Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides.

Most of the passengers were freed, and they calmly walked

down a set of stairs from the plane, carrying their hand luggage and boarding a bus. But he kept on board seven people: four members of the flight crew.

The hijacker eventually realised there was “no chance” any of his demands would be met, and he left the plane, where he was immediately arrested by anti-terrorism police. The belt of explosives turned out to be “telephone cases” made to look like they were explosives.

Trump’s Rebel bikie gunned manager down in Sydney street charged

A heavily tattooed bikie nicknamed Ruthless said he came into the world covered in blood and wasn’t afraid to leave the same way.

Michael Davey’s words proved prophetic when he was gunned downed in a driveway metres from his western Sydney home, having survived a previous shooting attempt less than a year ago.

The Rebels bikie gang member, aged in his 30s, died in Stafford Street, Kingswood just after midnight yesterday despite attempts by paramedics to save him.

Known as Micky D and Ruthless, he is believed to have escaped uninjured after a shooting at a Penrith shopping centre last April, which resulted in a 24-year-old man being charged.

The Sydney Rebels announced Mr Davey’s death on Facebook, offering condolences to his family.

“You will be truly missed brother you were one of a kind. May you ride in the Forever Chapter,” they said.

Girlfriend Sarah Gerrard said she would never forget all he had done for her.

“RIP MICKY. You’ve been a massive part of my life and you’ll always be in my heart we were best friends,” she wrote.

At the scene, Krystal Lenkova paid tribute to the father of one, who she said would do anything for his son.

“He was a good guy. I know a lot of people may not think it because of what he was involved in, but he was a really genuine guy,” she said.

Mr Davey, who fixed motorbikes for a living, described himself as a “revhead” on social media accounts, which show a heavily tattooed man with a passion for the gym.

His Instagram includes the statement: “I came into this world kick’n n scream’n while covered in some1 elses’s blood no I’m not afraid of leavin the same way” alongside a gun and explosion emoji.

The street is no longer being treated as a crime scene by officers who are following up leads, including a vehicle neighbours told police they saw driving away after the shooting.

Police conducting line searches in the street where he died discovered a knife in a grassy area near the red brick home where the shooting occurred, just a few houses away from the unit block where Mr Davey lived.

US Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump’s campaign manager Corey Lewandowski has been charged with battery in Florida amid allegations that he forcefully grabbed a reporter at a campaign event.

Police in Jupiter, Florida, on Tuesday charged Lewandowski, 42, with intentionally grabbing and bruising the arm of Michelle Fields, a reporter for the conservative news outlet Breitbart, when she tried to question Trump at a campaign event on March 8.

“Mr Lewandowski is absolutely innocent of this charge,” Trump’s campaign said. “He will enter a plea of not guilty and looks forward to his day in court. He is completely confident that he will be exonerated.”

Police released a video showing the incident. It shows Fields walking alongside Trump, and Lewandowski grabbing her arm and pulling her backward.

End of Idol nears American Idol, which gave the world Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson, has one more chance to mint a star before it fades into TV and music history.

Whether viewers choose a future charttopper or trivia question remains to be seen.

But executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, who helped translate Britain’s Pop Idol into the Fox version that debuted in 2002, said the farewell episode will be memorable. “It’s going to be a rather spectacular show,” Lythgoe promised, with all the former winners on hand along with past contestants and “other surprises” in the two-hour finale.

“It’s about the American idols, about reminding people of 15 seasons,” he said, as well as giving the final winner his or her share of the spotlight.

Designed by Sportscraft, Aussie athletes will don tailored green and white-striped blazers at the opening ceremony in Rio, with men wearing white shorts and women wearing skorts - shorts with a front panel resembling a skirt. It will be the first time men slip on shorts instead of trousers for the opening ceremony. The uniform, unveiled yesterday in Sydney, also includes a silk scarf for women and a gold knitted tie for men.

US-based company TOMS designed the white lace-up shoes. Both beach volleyballer Taliqua Clancy and cyclist Kaarle McCulloch said they loved the predominantly green ensemble. “I’ve been calling it the Rio retro look,” McCulloch said. “It’s inspired from the 1924 Paris Olympic Games so there’s a bit of history involved.”

Are we too sanitised now?

o matter how you look at it, the Ashburton District appears to have a huge problem with its drinking water.

Yes, our official town water supplies tick all the boxes for purity, but somehow we’re ingesting water that has sufficient contaminants on board and it’s making us sick.

The rumbling tum syndrome is alive and well in the Ashburton District, backed up by statistics that put our gastro infection rates up near the top for the country.

That has medical officer of health Alistair Humphrey puzzled and worried.

He’s blaming agricultural intensification and he might be right. It’s no secret we have a number of hot spots around the district where well water has been identified as carrying a high nitrogen loading and that correlates with tummy bugs such as campylobacater. Clearly people drawing their household supplies from wells around those areas run the risk of becoming ill.

But could other factors be at play?

Before the days of household wells, many farm homes took their drinking water supplies from a tank filled with rain water gathered from a house or shed roof. That water was neatly filtered through whatever was gathered in the spouting – dead birds, decayed leaves and droppings of all manner of animals.

Shower and dishwashing water came from the nearby water race, but if the rain water supply dried up then race water was the only option. And that meant water that was filtered through dead stock upstream, mud, freshwater fish and weeds.

If water came from a well, it was never tested for quality.

Few people got sick. Stomachs were well used to the bugs that floated through the household supply.

Today we’ve become a nation of clean freaks. We live by expiry dates on food, many drink only bottled water, food is frozen or refrigerated to within an inch of its life and we wipe, scrub and disinfect every surface.

Where once kids ingested dirt, sand and God knows what as part of largely unsupervised play, kids are now washed, wiped and many are rarely allowed to get dirty.

No question our drinking water must be pure, but have we become such a sanitised nation our bellies can no longer deal with the odd bug?

Nike has unveiled a pair of ‘Marty McFly’-inspired selflacing trainers.

Nike showed off its new HyperAdapt trainers in New York last week and the company has confirmed they will launch later this year.

It’s the first shoe line to feature what the sportswear brand is calling Electro-Adaptive Reactive Laces (EARL). The laces automatically tighten when you slip your foot into the shoe.

The system works using a sensor hidden in the heel, which is triggered when the foot hits it.

The EARL system is powered by an in-shoe battery with a lifespan of about two weeks between charges. The battery also powers a blue LED light in the base of the shoe, which not only looks cool, but acts as an indicator of battery life.

I can hear it now, “I had to unplug your phone, Dad. My shoes were dead.”

On the plus side though, after Easter I have found it a little harder than normal bending over to tie shoes.

While I’m talking about innovation that we really don’t need, there’s this: It was only a matter of time before someone accomplished what the weed smokers of the world have been waiting for … combining weed and Nutella in one package.

I guess it makes sense. When you smoke up, you’re going to want a snack. Apparently Nutella always seems like a good idea. Enter Chrontella, a jar of chocolate and hazelnut spread with 300mg of cannabis extract swirled throughout.

It ain’t cheap. A small jar costs $US23 and only holds around three servings. It’s not recommended you eat the entire jar as you usually do. I guess if you do over-indulge and then need to go out, you’re going to be so thankful for those self-lacing shoes eh?

Teriyaki chicken with mushrooms and snow peas Teriyaki sauce: 75ml salt-reduced Japanese soy sauce 100ml mirin* 1/2 C salt-reduced chicken stock

■ Add the chicken back to the pan with the teriyaki sauce. Simmer for 2 to 3 minutes or until the sauce coats the chicken and the chicken is heated through.

■ Meanwhile, in another frying pan, heat the extra oil. Add the mushrooms and stir-fry over medium high heat for 2 to 3 minutes or until tender. Add the sliced snow peas and cook for a further minute.

■ Slice the chicken into thick strips before serving with the vegetables and rice. Garnish with the spring onions.

Global market conditions for dairy products point to at least two more seasons of low milk payouts in New Zealand, Westland Milk Products told shareholders yesterday as the co-operative revised its predicted payout for the 2015-16 season to $3.90 to $4.00 per kilogram of milksolids, down from last month’s prediction of $4.00 to $4.10.

Westland CEO Rod Quin said the major driver of the revised payout remains the global oversupply of milk, compounded by the ongoing high availability and aggressive approach by the European dairy market.

Quin and Westland Chair Matt O’Regan have recently returned from Europe where they met with customers, farmers, processors, traders and industry advocates.

“The clear and consistent message we received,” Quin said, “is that European milk growth will be higher and more aggressively promoted by European farmers and processors than expected, both within Europe and, more concerning to New Zealand, the international markets.

“The effect of this is likely to be a longer time frame for the downturn in prices; expected for another two seasons. This will lead to relatively lower pay-outs and a resulting impact on New Zealand dairy farmers.”

However, Quin said, there are indications the global over supply of milk will correct itself, but not quickly.

Since September 2010, $3.5 billion of Canterbury’s consents have been identified as earthquake-related building consents.

This includes consents for 4255 new dwellings, the data showed.

Nationally, the value of consents for non-residential buildings in February was $372 million, down $99 million or 21 per cent from February 2015, mainly due to a decrease in the value of consents for office, administration, and public transport buildings.

Residential building is booming with new dwelling consents hitting their highest point in more than a decade.

Statistics NZ figures showed 2379 new dwellings were consented last month, the highest for a February since 2004 and up 35 per cent on the same month a year ago.

Consents were issued for 1712 houses, 341 townhouses, flats, and units, 204 apartments and 122 retirement village units. The busiest areas were Auckland were consents rose 49 per cent, the Bay of Plenty up 98 per cent and Otago, up 136 per cent. In Canterbury, 525 new dwellings were consented, up only 1.5 per cent on February last year.

Nick Smith, Building and Housing Minister, said the latest data confirmed the Government’s housing supply initiatives were working.

The 350 properties growing the two varieties of fodderbeet to be found contaminated with velvetleaf nationwide will be inspected by the Minister of Primary Industries (MPI) and regional councils as the weed spreads, including 195 properties in Canterbury.

Plants and environment surveillance manager Mark Bullians confirmed the plant was listed among the world’s top 10 worst weeds because of how long it can stay active in soil and it has been found on 60 properties nationwide, but that number continues to grow.

MPI had identified two imported seed lines as the possible source of incursion, but was investigating other seed lines as well, he said.

The Guardian queried response times from MPI to farmers notifying them of possible incursions after a farmer, who did not wish to be named, said he had difficulty getting the ministry charged with handling biosecurity issues to respond to his phone calls.

The same farmer also said his crop had been inspected by a field officer from the merchant he had purchased his fodderbeet seed from, but the officer had failed to identify the weed.

Mr Buillians agreed there could be some delays in making farm visits due to the high number of properties that have been identifying as harbouring the weed.

“We are prioritising inspections and will introduce new field teams this week to minimise the chance of delays.”

The policy was to make contact with farmers who leave messages within 24 hours, he said, with field staff endeavouring to make required property visits as soon as possible.

And while most media reports have centred around the importer, DLF Seeds, MPI has confirmed there are a

number of merchants involved – some national and some local in on-selling it to farmers.

Foundation for Arable Research CEO Nick Pyke is urging farmers to be vigilant and to check and re-check their fodderbeet crops.

Mr Pyke said there had been some cases of false negatives, where field officers from seed merchants had inspected crops but had not spotted the weed.

He said it was a good outcome to have ECan and MPI deciding to inspect all Kyros and Bangor lines of fodderbeet in Canterbury to ensure any incursions are picked up.

Mr Pyke believed drilling contractors had been responsible for some incursions due to lax standards around cleaning their drills out between paddocks.

DLF Seeds general manager Tom Bruynel said he had given MPI the name of all the merchants they had sold the contaminated fodderbeet seed to and the ministry had contacted all of them.

Mr Bruynel was not aware of any other varieties of fodderbeet that might be contaminated but said it was a possibility among other importing companies.

He advised farmers to inspect their paddocks and praised ECan and MPI for their handling of the incursion.

his new compact X1 is unlike any previous or current X Series BMW you’ve seen before.

Why? Well even though it looks like a reduced-in-size X5, it uses BMWMini’s new-generation platform which means its engine sits sideways, rather than lengthwise as do all the other Xs. The benefit of this is much more space inside.

This is particularly noticeable in the rear seat, where the space all-round, and especially so the leg-room, is impressive.

There’s four models, two diesel and two petrol.

Two are front-wheel-drive, the $65,500 sDrive18d and $72,000 sDrive20i, while the $76,500 xDrive20d and $83,500 xDrive25i M Sport are all-wheel-drive.

For those prices you expect, and for all, get lots of standard gear.

This includes, dual climate-air, sat-nav, a wide array of connectivity features with many menus, leatherette (leather for 25i M Sport) clad seats with heating and electric adjustment for the front, an electric tailgate etc.

And of course as you progress up through the range, the detailing and comfort/convenience features also increase.

Safety stuff includes eight airbags, LED headlights, front/rear sensors, a reversing camera, forward collision and lane keeping warnings, parking assistance and even hill descent control.

Plus there’s many options available, of which the test car had the $2000 X-line package and $1500 19-inch alloys wheels.

Plus the $600 sliding rear seat, which moves fore and aft so to swap some of the boot space for more leg-room, or vice-versa.

The comfortable front seats in the contemporary, classy and nicely furnished cabin are placed so you get both the now-desired commanding view of the road from them, as well as the dash’s nicely presented instruments and controls.

Boot space is a decent 505 litres, courtesy of there being no spare wheel, just an inflation kit, because of the run-flat tyres.

This increases to 1550 litres with the rear, 60:40 splitting seat folded.

The 2-litre diesel delivers a very useful 400Nm of torque from 1750rpm.

It’s refined, very responsive, relaxed at cruise and then especial-

All this is done in a hushed manner, although of course, with windows down, from cold starts there’s some normal diesel sounds, which quickly disappear as soon as you move off.

It does this suitably quickly as well, reaching 100km/h in just under eight seconds.

Claimed fuel consumption is 4.9L/100km, aided no doubt by the auto stop/start system.

High 5s/early 6s were indicated for my variety of driving, all of which is very much helped out by the very smooth shifting 8-speed auto.

This feels like it’s made for this engine by always putting all the engine’s torque to best possible use.

While there’s both paddles and the opportunity of flicking the lever into sport to override the

auto’s decisions, it does such a great job I mostly left it to do its own thing.

With a 166mm ground clearance the X1 is set up for on-road rather than off-road driving, so while the suspension is comfort oriented and suitably compliant, I found it nicely set up for both open road cruising and pressingon hill driving.

The electric steering is precise and when asked to, it corners with enthusiasm with an always well-planted feel, even though the X1’s all-wheel-drive is an on demand system, unlike the usual X Series constant system.

It mostly delivers drive to the front wheels, but as needed, dispenses drive to the rear.

Accordingly, while it’s not quite the ultimate driving machines most BMWs are, few will notice!

Standard fare are 20ds, 18-inch alloys.

I drove one with these and then locally one on the optional 19inch rims and lower profile tyres.

These, while they may look

more appealing, to a certain extent, both troubled the X1’s ride quality and created more road noise.

MX-5 keeping it fun T

he Mazda MX-5 has won the 2016 World Car of the Year award.

It is the second Mazda to win the award, following the Mazda2 in 2008.

The third generation MX-5 was one of three finalists for the same award in 2006, as was the Mazda3 in 2014.

In addition to taking the main award this year, the MX-5 has also been named World Car Design of the Year.

It is the first time in the history of the awards that a single model has taken both titles.

World Car of the Year was established in 2004 by an international group of automotive journalists, and the judging

panel this year consisted of 73 journalists from 23 different countries.

The MX-5 was announced victorious over other finalists Audi A4 Sedan/Audi A4 Avant and Mercedes-Benz GLC at the New York International auto show on March 24.

The other finalists for World Car Design of the Year were the Jaguar XE and Mazda CX-3.

The fourth-generation MX-5 is the sixth model in Mazda’s new-generation lineup of vehicles featuring the full range of Skyactiv technology and KODO – Soul of Motion design.

Launched globally in 2015, the

model has found favour with customers thanks to its vastly reduced curb weight, human-centered design and “Jinba-ittai” fun-to-drive feel.

The new MX-5 has won over 30 awards so far, including 2015-2016 Car of the Year Japan and 2016 UK Car of the Year.

The retractable hardtop version of the model, Mazda MX-5 RF, made its world premiere at the New York International Auto Show.

Mazda say they will continue making cars that are fun to drive, aiming to become a “one-and-only” brand customers will choose again and again.

ayden Paddon is joining up with Hyundai New Zealand to launch the first-ever New Zealand-developed Hyundai rally car and create a new partnership to benefit the New Zealand rally sport scene.

Paddon, New Zealand’s most successful rally driver, currently competes in the World Rally Championship with long-time co-driver John Kennard as part of the Hyundai Motorsport Team.

Together they will contest two rounds of the New Zealand Rally Championship (NZRC) in the 1.8-litre, turbocharged Hyundai i20 rally car.

“I’m very excited to be part of this programme with Hyundai New Zealand as we enter a new phase of our partnership to bring our rally exploits back to New Zealand and to introduce Hyundai New Zealand to the NZRC,” Paddon said as he arrived back in New Zealand following his most recent WRC event in Mexico.

“Together, we are all working to provide more opportunities for people in New Zealand rallying and this new car will form a major part of this project while also allowing John and myself to, once again, enjoy two of the best rally events in the world.”

The partnership has resulted in the formation of the Hyundai New Zealand Rally Team, which will swing into action to support Paddon and Kennard’s entry into two of New Zealand’s biggest rally sport events – Rally Otago, April 8-10 and the International Rally of Whangarei, April 29 to May 1.

Ashburton Club & MSA Golf Section Our members travelled to Burnham Sunday March 20 playing our first round of the championships. Some members had different travelling experiences before they reached their final destination. One member from Hinds arrived at the MSA carpark 7.30am before realising 8.45 was a more realistic meeting time, so off to McDonalds for a caffeine fix which got her adrenalin flowing and put most of us at a disadvantage before even hitting a ball.

When our four muskateers arrived at Burnham in a four wheel drive which actually had a suspicious flattie, off it came in the carpark and a space saver went on in a matter of minutes. Standby fellows, Scott Dixon might want back up in his pitt. To top off the early departure from Ashburton for golf, two Tinwald girls called at Rolleston to stock up supposedly important snacks before arriving at Burnham on time.

Ashburton Horticultural Society President Joy Jaine welcomed members to the March meeting and received several apologies owing to the long holiday weekend. Speaker for the evening was Pauline O’Leary who displayed a few of her lovely roses including some pretty miniatures. Old favourites were compared with newer varieties and it was interesting to see which had remained popular over the years. Various problems associated with rose growing were discussed and also we were advised on the correct time to feed and prune our plants. The raffle was won by Pat Tarbotton.

Ashburton Ladies Probus Twenty-five ladies attended their monthly meeting on March 23 at the Doris Lounge, RSA. President welcomed everyone and apologies were given from 20 ladies. Minutes were read and approved. Treasurer and Almoner reports given and the raffle was won by Kath Lawler and Rona Hayward. After coffee Audrey Lowe the visiting speaker summarised the meeting at Washdyke earlier in the month and confirmed we were still OK to use the name Probus until further notice.

Margaret Watson thanked her and presented her with a basket of fruit.

Audrey then chaired our AGM which followed. Last year’s minutes were read and passed followed by the President’s report on last year’s activities which was passed by Margaret Drummond, seconded by Rona Hayward. Financial report was given and election of officers was read.

New committee members, Adriennie Lambie and Erin Porter were elected and welcomed. The Chain of office was handed over to the incoming President, Fairlie Matsinger who thanked Roberta Hampton and Heather Murdoch for their valuable services on committee and was looking forward to the coming year. As there was no other business the meeting closed at 12.15pm and lunch would be at Speights.

www.guardianonline.co.nz Ashburton U3A The topic for the March meeting of U3A Ashburton was an illustrated talk by Emeritus Professor Helen Leach of the Department of Anthropology and Archeology Otago University, entitled The New Zealand Kitchen in the 20th Century. Professor Leach was introduced by Anne Fleming.

From sweatshop to showroom, the evolution of the kitchen has been dramatic.

In 1914, the standard kitchen layout consisted of three rooms – kitchen, scullery and pantry and occupied a considerable floor space. The scullery was the area for the dirty work and a possible source of infection from the drains. A regular dose of baking soda and boiling water was applied in the Victoria era.

As the years passed and the availability of kitchen help declined, so did the floor space until it was a compact one room with a breakfast alcove attached, handy for feeding and supervising children whilst mother got on with other chores.

By the 1970s the Hostess kitchen was popular with open plan living/dining areas and island benches. By the 1980s kitchens had again become spacious as the general household size declined.

Trends in food followed trends in kitchen appliances and simplification of the family meals. The microwave revolutionised cooking in NZ in the same way electricity had decades earlier followed by electrical appliances fit for every purpose imaginable. But perhaps the real hero of the 20th Century has been the invention of detergent which did away with the soap in a shaker.

Professor Leach was thanked by Bill Hood. The next meeting will be on Tuesday April 26 when Keith Woodward will cover the topic of A2 Milk.

Ashburton Woodworkers Bryan Ching welcomed 20 members to the March meeting. Bryan mentioned the upcoming South Island Funday on May 21 and that members needed to decide who was going to be in the team of six turners. The Funday is a competition for members to turn a cup and saucer.

Three cups and three saucers is the challenge without using measuring devices, pencils or sandpaper. The best group of matching turnings will be declared the winner by the judge, vice president of the National Association of Woodworkers, Geoff Addison.

The club has been approached by the Variety Theatre to create a number of wooden bowls for their coming production Oliver. An excellent opportunity for the members to do something for the community.

As no measuring devices are permitted he showed how the width of a skew chisel could be utilised to your advantage. There is also a time limit to turning these items.

With the aid of a camera projecting onto a TV screen it has improved the visibility of the demonstration.

Dave mounted a blank onto an adaptor screw chuck and with the aid of a gouge turned the outside into a cup, made a recess in bottom which was then removed and reversed. The bottom now being held by a chuck and the inside gouged out until a cup was formed. The saucer was turned in a similar fashion. Thanks Dave for the demonstration.

Coronation Target Shooting Club Many hours of voluntary labour and not insignificant cost to raise the level of lighting to national standard was put to the test over the last two weeks and generally appreciated by all shooters.

Steve McArthur posted the first possible of the season followed a week later by Sandy Bennett.

Our much vaunted juniors have hit the ground running with many picking up right where they left off last season.

Michaela and Emma Smith, Richard Pearce and Andrew McKenzie have all signalled that their ungraded status is about to be reviewed. This week a course was conducted to increase the number of coaches within the club and as a result Shania Harrison-Lee, Brian Kerr and Carol Harper moved into the graded ranks.

Creative Fibre Ashburton for MarchThere were 31 present at the meeting. It was noted that Betty Young turned 101 recently very much with it too. The Age Concern Positive Ageing Day went well, we had a place there along with 59 other groups. The bus trip to Christchurch to the official Wool and Fibre shop was much enjoyed one Monday morning and then in the afternoon the ladies were taken to the Wool Carding business at Burnham. Some ladies from another group wondered whether we would be interested in knitting some baby hats, not in white, for a maternityclinic in Africa. Members showed some interest. A travelling suitcase from a festival in Dunedin with many lovely exhibits was on a table for us to admire. It was noted that Back to Basic show to be held at the New Life Church will take place on 2nd April 10am-3pm.

There were many handcrafted pieces of work on the Show and Tell table. In the baby and toddlers section there were 8 knitted jackets, 5 knitted dolls, 7 singlets, a cot rug with knitted teddies on it, knitted dolls clothes hats and boottees.

For adults there were knitted earrings, 2 muffs with small novelties knitted into them, Knitted caps, 2 rugs, woven shoulder bags, slippers. a woven wall hanging depicting church windows and 5 scarves. After the official meeting Nicola from Ashfords showed how important it is to card wool evenly to make a good product. We all learned from this.

Seniornet Ashburton Our AGM has been held and we are pleased to announce we have a new committee. We have a new President John Burn and we wish him well for his time in Office. Make yourselves known to him, as he is very approachable and would be pleased to meet you.

RURAL WOMEN President’s message Rural Women members attended the annual Ashburton District Council Youth Forum presentations.

Cooking was raised at the 2015 forum by students as an interest item. So Mid Canterbury Rural Women Members have taken on board this request and have established a Cooking Holiday activity.

To support this initiative or for further details please call Marion Dent 3085954 Rural Women is not all about cooking, but we do wish to ensure skills continue into the next generation. Anama Lavender has been a popular product in its many forms for centuries. Its fragrant light purple flowers are dried and used

to scent linen, distilled into oil, or made into hand creams and body lotions.

A perennial favourite, it is easily grown and withstands hot, dry conditions; a field of lavender in bloom is a breathtaking sight.

Leonie Rouse, owner of a lavender farm on the Hinds–Arundel Road ably described to Anama Rural Women the many processes and products that can be generated from lavender when she spoke at their March meeting in the Mayfield church lounge.

Trish Small introduced our speaker for the evening Marilyn Cross who writes poetry and children’s books. Marilyn spoke about her early life growing up in Winchmore/Lyndhurst area (Nish family) and explained to us the process or writing and publishing work.

She read a number of her poems and these were much enjoyed by those present. Books were able to be purchased

Members met at the home of Jill Harris, a good attendance of members, a minute silence for a dear member who had away passed away was observed.

Many of our members had attended the Positive Ageing Expo, Age Concern are too congratulated for the success of this event.

Our guest speaker for meeting was Mrs Jackie Girvan; she spoke on the work of

Presbyterian Support Community Services in Mid Canterbury.

There are many sections that help people, social workers in schools, counselling, community family support, youth services, parents as first teaches, Pacific community liaison and health promotion etc.

Presbyterian Support is an approved service, offering a unique and integrated service to young people, older folk, families, couples and individuals through counselling, social work, mentoring and education.

Trevor Wilson Trust is the main contributor to the costs.

Our branch will celebrate our 80th anniversary on May 15, 2016, please keep this date free.

Seafield Seven of the members of the Seafield Branch met at St Paul’s Lounge for their March meeting.

We were welcomed by Lois Bradley acting President who led in the creed.

All business was dealt with especially things that were to be talked over from the Provincial Meeting. Cars and Runners were organised for M.O.W in April.

We stopped our meeting as our Speaker Trish Best had arrived.

Trish went on a very interesting trip by ship to Antarctica in January on Sea Explorer 1.

Up 6.30am each morning to prepare for going on land the see all the penguins in their colonies then back to the ship for another group to go.

Not only penguins they saw seals and whales in their travels. She really enjoyed her trip away something she has never done before. Trish was thanked with a fruit tray.

We carried on with our meeting and a few decisions were made about our 85th birthday in June.

Reminded members about the Positive Aging Expo.

When everything was dealt with we finished with a social time.

New academy sets boxing, life goals

Registration has begun for the newly formed Mid Canterbury Boxing Academy, with the gym set to open its doors on May 2.

The academy is governed by the Mid Canterbury Youth Charitable Trust, and the young stable will be under the tutelage of current national welterweight champion Cornelius Grobler.

Grobler recently coached Lance Caffell and Coenraad Venter to silver and gold medals in the middle and light heavyweight divisions at the South Island Novice Championships, and is hoping the duo will show the academy boxers what can be achieved through hard work and dedication.

“They only started boxing a few months ago, and it shows that they can achieve their dreams and goals, so that shows the young boys that they can too,” he said.

Grobler insisted that the academy is not solely focused on the sweet science, but also instilling positive values through what is often described as the hardest game of all.

“Our whole aim is about strengthening our community by empowering young people, so boxing is the vehicle of what we want to achieve,” he said.

The academy will be based upon respected coach Billy Graham’s Naenae Boxing Club in Wellington.

The Naenae club’s aim is to teach young people life skills and discipline through participation in boxing and physical fitness – an ethos which Grobler hopes to replicate.

“The main focus is to teach these boys life skills, and teach them the values of boxing; self-discipline, patience, respect and self-respect,” said Grobler.

Academy administrator Lisa Anderson, whose son will be

joining the club, previously held the common misconception of the brutality of boxing, but said her recent involvement in the sport has changed her opinion.

“I had a dim view of boxing, but I realised that it was because I actually had no knowledge of it,” she said.

“Having spent the last two years involved with Cornelius and watching amateur boxing, what impressed me is the huge amount of respect that they have for each other.”

The academy will cater for budding boxers from ages nine to 18 years old, and Grobler, who will next be in action on April 16, insisted all participants, regardless of skill level, will be helped to achieve their individual goals.

“We’re not focusing on boxing to make these guys national champions, yes, if there is talent we will support them, but our goal is not to create champion boxers, but champion men,” he said.

Juniors benefit from experts Mid Canterbury’s up and coming tennis players will have an opportunity to brush up their skills with some of Canterbury’s best coaches.

Canterbury regional coach Matt Meredith, and his brother James, will be at the Ashburton Tennis centre on Friday afternoons during term two coaching juniors of all skill levels.

Some of the district’s top juniors have been travelling to Christchurch to take part in coaching sessions at Wilding Park with the pair, junior tennis chairman Peter Leonard said, so having them come down to Ashburton made their expertise accessible to all levels of players. Players, however, will be organised into appropriate skill groups.

James Meredith recently beat Artem Sitak, a current Davis Cup team member, and was recently awarded Canterbury Player of The Year. He has played several seasons in the USA College system for Boise University.

Matt Meredith has been appointed coach of the Wilding Challenge team for the combined Mid Canterbury/ Ellesmere team for our top under 10s who will play against the rivals from Canterbury in a six-week competition.

Mid Canterbury Tennis is currently advertising for a new head coach, after the resignation of Chris Anderson after nearly 11 years in the role. Applications for this position close in early April.

Tyler nabs tennis silverware The summer tennis season is now officially at a close, and the district’s junior tennis players got together on Tuesday night to mark the occasion. Among those receiving prizes at the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre was Tyler Leonard, (above) received the trophy for winning the boys’ year 7 and 8 section of the Primary and Intermediate Singles Tournament, from Val Ferrier.

It’s a title fit to grace the top of any player’s CV – the fastest man in New Zealand rugby.

And while that particular label may be hard to quantify, it’s one Chiefs coach Dave Rennie has shown no hesitation in assigning to Toni Pulu.

An attack that hardly needed any additional spark saw on Saturday the injection of some serious pace, with the rookie wing adding yet another weapon to a team who this season average 40 points per game.

After a long and dispiriting battle with injuries, Pulu made his Super Rugby debut in the Chiefs’ 53-10 thumping of the Force, scoring with his first touch and, as advertised,

showing a rather clean pair of heels.

The Counties Manukau man recorded a 40m sprint time of 4.78 seconds in team testing, faster than any other member of the squad and, according to Rennie, faster than anyone in the Kiwi conference.

“He’s the quickest man in New Zealand rugby,” Rennie said. “Anything under 5 [seconds] is quick and there would be no one quicker than [Pulu] in the country.”

Pulu’s time tracks well with some historical data unearthed. Springboks wing Bryan Habana, for example, owns the Stormers’ record with a run of 4.77secs.

The NBL is increasing the number of imports and introducing a so-called soft salary cap for next season. With Brisbane to re-join the fold in 2016-17, rosters will increase by one extra player to 11, while the current $1 million salary cap will be replaced by a $1.1 million soft salary cap. The NBL says the cap “is a soft cap, with teams able to spend over and above this figure” provided they contribute to an equalisation subsidy. The subsidy will then be paid to teams struggling to meet the cap, which had previously been a $1m hard cap. As well as increasing the number of imports, the NBL scrapped the player points rating system.

Blues happy to go The Blues rugby franchise, one of Eden Park’s core tenants, support the idea of a stadium in Auckland’s CBD and would be happy to leave their spiritual home. The Blues’ board considered the issue at its meeting last week and decided it would support in principle the construction of a football-specific stadium in the central city rather than continuing at the suburban ground where they have played for 20 years. The main issue is one of size. This season the Blues have attracted crowds of just over 20,000 to both their matches at Eden Park against the Highlanders and Hurricanes, but the 50,000 capacity stadium has been less than half full. Rakaia honours stars Jesse Houston was named Rakaia’s junior sportsperson at the Rakaia Sports Awards last night.

Rakaia’s top sportsperson for 2014/15 was last night named as clay target shooter Boston Walker.

Walker was one of many celebrated as Rakaia’s sporting community came together for the biennial Rakaia Sports Awards at the Rakaia Community Centre.

A packed house of 210 people celebrated the district’s sporting achievements, and listened to tales from the night’s guest speaker – multisport legend Steve Gurney.

Walker, who was the 2015 New Zealand points score champion and set a new national record after shooting 750/750 at the New Zealand DTL Championships, was named the top senior sportsperson, while Jesse Houston was named top junior sportsperson.

forts on the rugby and sevens fields, which included making a New Zealand top four secondary school rugby team in 2014, and in 2015 making the Canterbury men’s sevens team which qualified for nationals, the New Zealand Condors BNZ secondary school sevens squad, and being one of 100 selected for a national secondary schools rugby squad.

Rugby was also a winner in the coach category, with Craig Dunlea named top coach. Dunlea was the assistant coach of the New Zealand Under 19 Heartland team in 2014, and head coach in 2015, and was also assistant coach of the Mid Canterbury Heartland side which won the Meads Cup in 2014, and made the semi-finals in 2015.

The Dunlea name also featured in the volunteer section, with Carmen Dunlea – Craig’s wife – one

of three winners. Carmen Dunlea – Rakaia Hockey Club president for the past eight years - won for her services to hockey, while Roger Hood’s 30-plus years with the Rakaia Bowls Club saw him honoured, and the third award went to Bruce and Nicki Kelly – founders of the annual Rakaia Salmon Fishing Competition.

Ploughing was another winner, with James Stewart named top referee/umpire/judge for his 50 years as a ploughing competitor, judge and administrator.

The top senior team award went to the Rakaia men’s Alexander pennants golf team, which won the Alexander Cup pennant competition in both 2014 and 2015, being undefeated in 13 straight matches in 2014.

For junior teams, the winners were Rakaia School’s jump jam team, the Rakaia Breakerz.

The team of Uluaki Manu, Talita Manu, Shrina Afu, Aman Pongia, Mahina Pongia, Emma Johnson, Skye Gulleford, Amber Willmolt, Crystal Brown, Nina Atkinson, Josh Dunlea, Seth Hislop and Catherine Harper, which was coached by Anita Paul, qualified for the national jump jam competition and finished fourth. They were also the winners of the technical execution excellence award.

The trip to nationals was made possible through their sponsor Gregan Logging, who fitted out all of the children with pants, shoes and hoodies. Gregan Logging was also honoured last night as the winner of the outstanding club sponsor award.

Awards spokesperson Mandy Hurst said organisers were impressed with the level of nominations received.

people who have done some amazing things,” she said.

The awards were initially set up as a fundraiser by Sport Rakaia Incorporated, as part of their ongoing efforts to try and get a new sports complex built in Rakaia, but it had become more than that, Mrs Hurst said. She said it was about more than the money it raised, it was about celebrating the small town’s sporting achievements.

Entry was open to people living in the Rakaia area or affiliated with a Rakaia sports club.

Highly commended awards were also handed out, to Hailey Beevor (smallbore rifle shooting) and Cliff Jordon (power boat racing) in the senior sportsperson category, and Jackson Holmes Contracting (The Salmon Run multisport event) for the outstanding club sponsor category.
