Police foot patrols on rise BY DAISY HUDSON

Ashburton’s top cop denies there are fewer police on the beat, despite new figures showing foot patrols have decreased. New police figures show the number of foot patrols in Mid/ South Canterbury dropped by 23 per cent in February since the same time last year. In February 2014 325 foot patrols were recorded – that decreased by 76 to 249 patrols in

February this year. However, while foot patrols are down across the district, Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield believes Ashburton is bucking the trend. Mr Banfield said in a statement the number of foot patrols in town have increased over the past year. “Over the last 12 months foot patrols in the Ashburton CBD have increased, and we are receiving positive feedback from

business owners and the community at the high visibility, frequent patrols,” he said. The monthly statistics, which provide information about crimes and police preventative activities, also showed drug supply offences more than doubled this February since the same time last year. Fifteen drug supply offences were recorded last month, up from a total of six in February 2014.

With roots stretching back to 1875, Heartland has a proud history of supporting small-to-medium sized businesses, farms and families in Canterbury. It’s great to offer the people of Ashburton a local banking option that is 100% for New Zealand.

That was also a significant increase from January, when just two drug supply offences were recorded. Drug use offences stayed steady at 17 last month, the same as February last year. Reducing the amount of drug-related offending has been a major police focus in Mid Canterbury. “Over the last 12 months targeted prevention work relating to drugs and drug supply has

been increased in the Ashburton area to come into line with activities being undertaken in the wider Canterbury District,” Mr Banfield said. Violent crime also continues to rise, with serious assaults resulting in injury, public place assaults, dwelling assaults, and assaults on police all up since last February. The number of vehicles stolen also rose significantly last month, from 10 to 25. Ph 03 307 7900 to subscribe!
