Outbreak closes Lauriston school

Lauriston School’s classrooms were empty yesterday after a stomach bug outbreak forced principal Colin Brodie to send his entire student body home.

One parent called the school on Tuesday to say their child was ill and by Thursday morning that number had grown to 56, almost half the roll.

Faced with what was proving to be an alarming number of sick children, Brodie said the best option for students and the wider school community was to send all children home and cancel school for the rest of the week.

The mass illness was new territory for Brodie and the school board, and a process had to be followed that ensured maximum student safety, he said.

The tummy bug that was carving its way through the school was suspected to be norovirus, Brodie said.

“After seeking advice from the Ministry of Health we have advised that it would be in the best interests of our families to send our children home and keep the school closed tomorrow (Friday) to mitigate the risk of further infection.”

Brodie said that additional information would be provided by the school

to its parent community during the day and a thorough clean of the school would be carried out under guidance provided by the Ministry of Health.

For parents, the school closure meant a few changed plans – an early exit from work to collect children and a rethink of Friday’s child care needs.

And for students not affected by the virus, it meant a three-day weekend.

Outbreak closes Lauriston school

Mum Raewyn was unfazed by the school closure, saying the welfare of students always had to come before any inconvenience for parents.

“Safety of kids is paramount in this environment,” she said.

A dedicated bus service runs daily to and from Lauriston School, but Methven Travel owner Dave Dynes is confident the rigorous cleaning regime in place since Covid-19 will ensure the bus interior was well sanitised.

Norovirus, which is a highly infectious disease, spreads easily from person to person.

Both faeces and vomit are infectious, and the virus can survive on contaminated surfaces even after cleaning with some disinfectants.

People with norovirus are infectious for at least three days after the symptoms stop and on some occasions for up to two weeks.

It can be spread by consuming contaminated food or drinks, by touching contaminated surfaces or objects and putting fingers in your mouth, by direct contact with an infected person through shared food, plates or cutlery or through air infected with vomit particles.

In January 2018 norovirus swept through Christchurch School, Medbury, seeing 111 students out of a roll of 365 become ill.

It tore through the school community over three days and was traced back the school’s canteen.

Hakatere Hope Walk to return

The Hakatere Hope Walk, aimed at bringing awareness of mental illness and suicide out of the darkness and into the light, is happening again this year.

The positivity generated from last year’s event that saw around 200 people turn up, has prompted organisers to set a 2020 date.

Committee member Juanita Richards said Saturday, October 10 was chosen as it is the last Saturday of the school holidays and being spring the daffodils will be flowering.

Richards said the flowering daffodils added an extra dimension to the walk in a couple of ways. Firstly she said their colour is reflective of the official Hope Walk colour.

“Yellow is the colour for hope,

and hope is something we all have to hold on to. We need to remember that good things do happen to good people.”

The sweet smelling flowers are also synonymous with spring and therefore new beginnings.

“This walk is about the journey forward, and moving on with our lives, not living in the past. New beginnings,” she said.

By wearing yellow and walking together past yellow flowers, participants are finding strength and unity as a community in order to support each other, Richards said.

The committee are hoping to be able to walk the same course around town as last year, but they are waiting for official approval before adding the route to their facebook page.

Last year’s walk, along East and West streets, also took in the railway bridge. The bridge provided a symbol for those involved to ponder.

“Crossing over the bridge meant we were moving from one side of our journey to the other,” Richards said.

The committee has 10 members at the moment, but more members are always welcome.

“We will be meeting on August 12 at two in the afternoon, in the He Waka Tapu office.”

The week before the Haratere Hope walk, is the Let’s Chalk About Mental Health event.

Hamish ACT’s new Rangitata candidate

He had felt he wanted to make a difference, and believed that by getting Rangitata voters to give their party vote to ACT, it could indeed make a difference.

“The right person with the right message can sometimes change the world,” he said.

He has politics in his blood, with his great great grandfather Arthur Rhodes having been Mayor of Christchurch and the MP for the old Gladstone electorate, which overlaps with what is today’s Rangitata electorate.

Hutton was brought up on a farm at Windwhistle, and Rhodes’ father, Hutton’s great great great grandfather, owned the first sheep station in South Canterbury in 1850.

He lives on farmland today at Leithfield near Amberley with wife Suzy and their three boys, aged nine, eight and six.

Hutton is chief marketing officer for the Wellnomics software exporter. He is a businessman with core competency in marketing, and has led marketing initiatives for Fonterra and Tait Electronics.

ACT leader David Seymour said he was thrilled to have Hutton on board.

“At a time when New Zealand is facing unprecedented economic challenges, having the benefit of Hamish’s global business experience within our party will be invaluable,” Seymour said.

The path to hell is paved with good intentions, says new Rangitata ACT candidate Hamish Hutton.

The 46-year-old is concerned about what he says is a cult of personality around our current prime minister Jacinda Ardern.

“All New Zealanders need to take the coming election extraordinarily seriously and force themselves to confront their assumptions,” he said.

Few dared to criticise Ardern, and while this was well meaning, it was a dangerous sign of a narrowing discourse which was unhealthy in a democracy.

“Talk policies, not personality, and actually think long-term, not short-term,” Hutton said.

As polls pointed towards a landslide victory for Labour, it drew up the scenario of the party tinkering with the economy to such an extent that the country would go broke.

Hutton is passionate about politics, but never really saw himself as a politician. However, this year when talking to a friend who was an ACT member, he decided he would give it a go.

“Like any good citizen I have an interest in what’s going to happen to the future of my country, and that interest grew and grew,” he said.

Happy middle ground found

The development of a new 39 unit retirement village on Allens Road has had its neighbours and the developer at loggerheads over likely increased traffic volumes down a quiet residential street.

While the new village will front Allens Road, it can also be accessed by what is currently land vested in the Ashburton District Council as a local purpose (road) reserve.

The original plan was for this road to be developed as a second entrance into the village, providing an easy link for residents with the existing Lochlea Village just a few hundred metres away.

The residents won one battle, to have contractors working on the development use the Allens Road entrance only, and they

es were made to the development plans but the access road from Primrose Place remained a sticking point.

Neighbours accepted that this was needed, but wanted the entrance to the village narrowed to four metres and for it to be for residents only – or emergency vehicles. The main entrance should be from Allens Road, they said.

With both parties around the table, councillors were satisfied that a deal could be done and voted to change the designation of the strip of land at the end of Primrose Place to a legal road and for it to be developed with a four metre wide carriageway.

That was an outcome that satisfied both developer Les Briggs and Kingsbury’s group of Primrose Place residents.

lea development will have Allens Road as its street address and all visiting traffic will access the complex from this road.

In support of his development, Briggs said he had purchased the land knowing it had potential access from Primrose Place and had intended this to be a main access point, however, he was happy to agree to change the main entrance to Allens Road.

“But the Primrose Place entrance is essential as it provided a direct route from the new development to the existing complex.

It’s not economic to run a 39 unit complex on its own and it needs to link to the existing village.”

The development would not only provide additional housing options for the district’s elderly it would also create a number of jobs, he said.

Kingsbury said he and his group were surprised to discover that a resource consent application had been lodged for the project in December last year and had then been granted in February on a non-notified basis.

“We then learned that significant ground level changes were taking place once work had started,” he said.

Residents were also concerned about the potential adverse effects of increase traffic volumes along Primrose Place.

In brief Another escape The Minister in charge of isolation facilities Megan Woods says another person managed to escape from the Crowne Plaza in Auckland after tailgating a staff member. She said the man was apprehended by police after only making it 50 metres from the hotel.

Air Commodore Darryn Webb said the 32-year-old man attempted to follow a staff member out of the gate, claiming he was a worker.

Webb said the man refused to show identification to staff who challenged him and then escaped onto Albert Street. He will appear in court at a later date.

One new case There was one new case of Covid-19 in managed isolation in New Zealand yesterday. DirectorGeneral of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said the person was a woman in her 20s who had travelled from Ireland via Dubai.

Her positive result was from day three testing, Dr Bloomfield said, and she had been transferred to a quarantine facility in Auckland from the Rydges hotel in Rotorua.

Gulls make messy return

Raucous black-billed gulls are gathering in Ashburton’s town centre, west of the railway line, as they lead up to breeding season.

The CBD all of a sudden sounds like a seaside village as the critically endangered river gulls prepare to set up for the summer on the Ashburton River bed.

As rare and beautiful as the gulls may be, they are unfortunately making a nuisance of themselves at the Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum and neighbouring homes.

The Ashburton District Council has erected hawk kites at the museum and gallery, where white splotches decorate the sides of the building and the surrounding pavement and cars.

Neighbour Charles Ross said the birds were a big problem at his house where they were ruining the roof. It would need cleaning, if not replacing.

“The art gallery and other houses are in their flight path, they fly directly overhead all the time, splattering all the vehicles in the area,” he said.

A hawk kite he had installed in the past two days was helping, and he was investigating other deterrent methods.

He estimated there were about 500 of the birds.

Forest and Bird Ashburton chairperson Edith Smith said about 30 of the birds over-wintered in the Ashburton Domain, and in recent days the number congregating in the town and flying overhead had grown to about 150.

The number was expected to grow further as spring approached, and they could be congregating for another couple of months before settling on the river for nesting.

The birds seemed to have returned to the town earlier this year, after wintering along the coast north of Ashburton, some perhaps even as far as the North Island.

She said the traditional nesting areas of the river at the State Highway One site and the Ashburton River mouth were looking good and healthy, so she expected the birds would move out there.

It was a matter of Ashburton residents just biding their time until that happened, and also employing measures to deter them from high buildings. Hawk kites had been successful at Harvey Norman, Mitre 10 and New World last year.

She acknowledged the nuisance the birds could be this time of year.

“I just see we have a town with a significant braided river flowing through it, which has lost so much of its biodiversity since human habitation. It’s a difficult thing becauseawho is responsible for these species, would we mind putting a sign out for a kiwi, because their threat status is the same,” Smith said.

“They are the rarest gull in the world, they evolved here.”

The United Kingdom has announced a further visa extension for foreigners stuck there because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Border closures, travel restrictions, and frequent flight cancellations have made it difficult for many people wanting to return to their home countries – including New Zealand – to do so. The UK government has twice previously extended all temporary visas that were due to expire from late January. The latest extension was to last until July 31 but as the problems getting home persist it has granted another month’s grace, until August 31.

Student feels let down A student who caught a man stalking her and taking dozens of photos of her as she shopped in an Auckland pharmacy says she feels let down by police. The 23-yearold woman confronted the man and demanded to see his phone which she says showed nearly 60 photos of her, which she described as “predatory” and “disturbing”.

Police told her they would speak to the man but they could not take any further action because the man took the photos in a public place, she said.

Covid privacy leak deemed deliberate Outgoing National MP Hamish Walker told an inquiry he leaked personal Covid-19 patient details to the media due to the “distress of being labelled a racist”.

The Privacy Commissioner will now look into whether either he or former National president Michelle Boag should face any consequences for their role in the massive privacy breach.

The government ordered the State Services Commission (SSC) to investigate in early July after three media outlets, including RNZ, were leaked the personal details of 18 patients in quarantine.

The next day, both Walker and Boag issued a statement admitting culpability for the leak.

The SSC report, authored by former Solicitor-General Mike Heron QC, confirmed that Boag had been emailed the information in her capacity as acting CEO of the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust.

Boag then passed on the details to Walker, who passed them to media. No news organisations reported the private information.

Heron’s report concluded that the leak was “deliberate and politically motivated”.

“Their actions were not justified or reasonable,” he said.

Heron said Boag assured him she didn’t send the report to anyone else, other than National MP Michael Woodhouse.

Asked in a media conference if he found Boag and Walker credible, Heron said “yes they were candid and frank, much as they

Heron said he found Walker and Boag to be “candid and severely regretful” and he had no reason to believe he was being misled.

Woodhouse assured me he had deleted this material, so I didn’t see much point in going any further with that, Heron said.

Heron said he thought it was appropriate for Woodhouse to delete the emails, but ideally he would have also alerted the ministry or minister and advised Michelle Boag not to disseminate the material.

Walker told the inquiry he was extremely upset to be labelled “racist” after issuing a press release raising concerns about an influx of people arriving from India, Pakistan and Korea.

“One of the purposes of sending this information on to media people was to respond, while under distress, to accusations of racism,” Walker told the inquiry.

“I accept that my judgement was impaired due to the pressure and distress of being labelled a racist.”

Walker also admitted that the spreadsheet he sent to media did not prove that his initial press release was factual or not racially motivated.

Heron also investigated whether the Ministry of Health should have emailed the information to Boag in the first place.

He concluded that it was “unnecessary” for emergency services, like the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust, to be provided the names of patients after 1 May due to the lack of community transmission of Covid-19.

“In short, there was no longer a serious threat justifying the non-consensual release of personal information such as this.”

However, Heron went on to say the Ministry was dealing with a “dynamic global

pandemic” and it was understandable that the policy was not reviewed.

The information should have been better protected from the outset – but nothing is foolproof, Heron said.

Deputy State Services Commissioner Helene Quilter said the Ministry’s policy around the security of personal information could have been tighter and should have been reviewed earlier.

She said Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield had assured the commission that the agency was fixing the areas identified in the report for improvement.

Onus for public service is clear when mistakes are made “own it, fix it and learn from it”, she said.

Quilter said the public would want to see Boag and Walker treated appropriately in relation to the breach of information, but because she does not have jurisdiction over them that will be a matter for the Privacy Commissioner to determine.

“I don’t think it’s acceptable to leak private information in the public service,” Quilter said.

But she said it was also important to remember that it was not the Ministry of Health which put the information in the public arena, but Boag and Walker.

Walker announced he would retire from politics at the election. Boag resigned from her roles with the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust, as well as her campaign and electorate roles for the National Party.

Close to finding the next phase for i-SITE building

A

big decision looms next week on one of the biggest controversies over a building in the Ashburton CBD. And no, it’s not the Cates Building, instead the now all but barren i-SITE building.

You know, that building that so many people within this community fought to stay open?

That building that was the site of a public rally calling out the council on the decision to close it’s doors? Yes, it’s moving onto greener pastures.

But just where those greener pastures are exactly is up for debate with two strong candidates understood to be fighting for the right to make it theirs.

And choosing one over the other, is a tough task – especially if you sit neutrally.

You’ve got Trotts Garden, an outstanding feature on the Mid Canterbury landscape and one of the true natural beauties of this place we call home, and also the Mid Canterbury Aero Club who wish to use the building as a new headquarters.

Both are strong community assets, serving completely different purposes and both play host to a wide array of visitors from all over New Zealand, and in some cases the world, each and every year – so how to decide?

That will be the Ashburton District Council’s job next week when presentations are made by the two organisations behind the bid to buy before a decision is made later in the week.

Despite the angst around the building and what it was formerly used for, it’s nice to see a good building like the former i-SITE being given an opportunity to call somewhere new home and serve a whole new purpose to the district.

Often we’re quick to demolish unwanted buildings, when in fact there is probably an arguably good use somewhere else.

What’s that saying? One person’s trash is another person’s treasure?

Seems pretty apt in this situation, doesn’t it?

Especially when there are two groups keen on making the building a treasure of their own.

Holes in border management I

was shocked to learn recently that nurses in Auckland and Wellington have been working shifts at managed quarantine or isolation facilities, as well as working in their hospital’s wards and emergency departments.

I am sure that many readers would share my expectation that nurses working at isolation and quarantine facilities should not be then doing shifts in high-risk areas like emergency departments and operating theatres.

In addition to the concerning revelation that the Ministry of Health is allowing double-shifting, the Government is also continuing to fail to deliver best practice border management in a number of other ways.

Given further recent break-outs from managed isolation facilities, it seems that the absence of Covid-19 in our communities is more a matter of good luck than good management.

The Government needs to get its border management processes watertight so that we can move forward with longer-term planning on issues such as giving the green light for international students to come to New Zealand in 2021 to study.

Educational institutions are looking for clarity about what their budgets for next year are going to look like and direction from the Government about how and when international students can be brought back in safely.

Schools are warning that the loss of the income they normally receive from international students will mean that they will be forced to consider cutting staff, resources and programmes next year.

Despite the Government recently announcing some new funding to support the sector, this will bring only minor relief.

It is not just schools that rely on the income from international students.

Many families host international students and count on the income they receive to manage their own budgets.

The Government’s current policy on border exceptions is also failing to respond to the needs of New Zealand businesses and this is costing jobs.

New Zealanders must be first in line for jobs wherever possible.

However, we will still need to access the right talent from overseas to maintain the needs of our businesses and support our economic recovery.

When a business can’t get critical skilled workers into New Zealand to perform roles where no Kiwis are available, it means they are forced to delay or cancel vital projects.

This is simply unacceptable when New Zealand is in the midst of a crisis with hundreds of thousands out of work and our economy in decline.

This is a time when we should be doing everything possible to boost our economy.

These workers pose little risk to the safety of New Zealanders as they are still required to quarantine, and the businesses employing them are covering the costs.

By letting our businesses and educational facilities down, the Government is failing to help reset and rebuild our economy to support our long-term recovery.

his week I have found myself getting more and more frustrated and angry with returning Kiwis that will not follow the rules. What goes through a person’s head when they think they it’s okay to put the hard work of an entire country at risk?

Is it stupidity or just plain ignorance?

Timing is a funny thing eh? Or is it just the universe providing?

Just as I was throwing my hands in the air and swearing at news of our latest breakout of isolation, this letter arrived in my inbox and I think it sums things up very well.

An Open Letter To Returning Kiwis: You ARE special. You were born in New Zealand. That alone makes you rare, in this world of 7.8 billion.

At some stage, for any of a thousand reasons, you left your home country. Perhaps for adventure, or love, for opportunities to study, or work, or live in a bigger, brighter city.

Perhaps you were bored here, or your life wasn’t what you wanted it to be.

Or maybe you didn’t have a choice, or the choice was not yours to make.

And now you want to come home. You are welcome. Your country awaits you.

We are special too. We have stayed and worked, and played, and lately, we have suffered.

We have had our freedom curtailed, our incomes reduced, the things we took for granted taken away.

We have had loved ones die and not been able to attend their funerals.

We have had others sick and not been able to comfort them.

We have had our children graduate, unable to have ceremonies.

We have had weddings with 10 guests, where there would have been 100+.

We have suffered, and, maybe, we have triumphed. But we are not at the finish line yet and our future is precarious.

You are welcome to come home. You are special.

But the lady behind the till at the supermarket? Her child has asthma and she lives in fear of catching Covid-19 and taking it home to her child, who is vulnerable.

And the nurse who will be testing you? Her husband has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. His immune system is shot and Covid-19 would be fatal, and so they are not living together.

The assistant at the liquor store? He doesn’t even know, but he is immune compromised, and not only is he at risk should he catch Covid-19, but so is his newborn baby.

So please, come home. You are special. But you’re not MORE special. Not more than the supermarket worker, not more

than the nurse, not more than the liquor store assistant. Not more than any single person in New Zealand.

So please, come home if you need to, want to, or have to.

But DON’T think you’re “more special”. That the rules don’t apply to you. That you should be entitled to compassionate leave to attend a relative’s funeral or visit a sick grandmother.

Because we, too, have been unable to do those things. We, too, have felt that pain. But we are not MORE special than the rest of our team of five million and so we have done our bit to protect our beautiful country and all the special people in it.

And now it’s your turn.

Come home, by all means.

Join our team of five million, we welcome you back. But please, obey the rules.

Two weeks in a four-star hotel with meals provided is not punishment. It is the price you need to pay for calling New Zealand home. To be able to come to our safe haven and live with little restrictions. To enjoy, it could be

argued, the best quality of life offered by any country in the world right now.

And to those (few) of you who can’t obey the rules, or think you’re MORE special – then perhaps this is no longer the place for you.

You do not belong in our team of five million and you are not welcome.

We have worked too hard, together, with too much cost, to risk it all on the likes of you.

YOUR VIEW Court news I would like to know the reason for the choice of bold headline for the reported court news re Monday’s court appearances.

You chose to highlight a vehicle accident by an 82-year old which unfortunately resulted in injury.

On the same page, and appearing before on the same day, were disgusting examples of violence against partners, men who with intent assaulted those who they are meant to love and cherish, partners who were pulled from their hair, punched and seriously injured.

Another article explains another driving incident whereby a moment of distraction resulted in injury and extensive damage to both vehicles, sounded a lot more serious than the

chosen highlighted one.

The reason for the distraction was not mentioned (neither in the chosen highlighted article).

Another article mentioned deliberate internet fraud, an ever-growing problem in today’s society.

I would have expected any of these articles to be boldly headlined before the chosen one, and especially use the opportunity to highlight the huge family violence problem in our community.

I hope all parties to any of the articles have recovered and, if needed, sought appropriate help.

practice for us to comment on stories regarding issues in the courthouse, I can give some reasoning to why these decisions were made.

The answer is public interest. The particular incident was covered by this newspaper on the day it occurred and follow-up stories were published over the weeks after the incident.

A significant number of phone calls, emails and comments on the street led us to believe the follow-up from the court perspective was of high enough public interest to report as such.

That particular decision was in no way chosen as a priority over other issues such as those mentioned in the letter, nor is it meant to be seen as us placing greater importance on one subject compared to another.

QUICK MEAL

Flourless chocolate meringue cake 15g butter, chopped plus extra, for greasing 200g dark chocolate, chopped 1 T instant coffee granules 6 eggs, separated 2/3 C caster sugar 1½ C almond meal ¼ C raspberry jam ½ C dark chocolate drops, melted Meringue 3 egg whites ½ C caster sugar 1 t lemon juice ■■ Preheat oven to 160°C (140°C fan-forced). Grease and line a deep, 22cm round springform pan.

■■ In a small saucepan, combine chocolate, butter and coffee. Stir over a low heat until smooth. Cool slightly.

■■ In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat egg yolks and sugar together until thick and creamy.

Add chocolate mixture, then almond meal, beating until combined.

■■ In a large bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form. Using a metal spoon, gently fold through chocolate mixture. Pour into pan. Bake for 45-50 minutes until cooked. Leave to cool in pan.

Kiwibank breach ‘significant’ The Privacy Commissioner is calling the Kiwibank transaction history breach ‘significant’ because of the numbers of customers and the information that was released.

Kiwibank is investigating how it sent 4200 customers an email or online bank statement with their own account number, name and address, but another person’s transaction history.

The commissioner, John Edwards, said some people will be identifiable by the statements and information sent.

“We generally have an expectation that our financial records will be kept private and the banking relationship is one of high expectation of confidence so to get this so wrong is a pretty serious matter.

Anyone affected had a right to complain to the commission, he said.

“If any of the 4000 or so people whose statements have been disclosed to the wrong person suffers some adverse consequence because of that they can come to us and maybe we can help.”

Kiwibank is engaging with the commissioner’s office, he said, and is in the early stages of finding out how the error happened.

“What we have seen is that they are taking it pretty seriously and getting in touch

with all the affected people trying to provide them with support and assurance that their information is now safe.

“They are also asking people who have mistakenly received the wrong information to destroy it.

“It’s an uncomfortable feeling for a lot of people to think that their transaction information could be with somebody who might mean some mischief - who could post it online or highlight items of interest that they’ve seen and use it to further intrude on the privacy or embarrass or shame people.”

He understands each case was “one-toone”, where an individual received one other person’s transaction history.

“If I’m right about that it does reduce the impact a little bit - it’s not like everybody is getting everybody’s transaction information.”

Kiwibank has declined an interview with RNZ, but in yesterday’s statement it said it was writing to customers whose transaction history may have been shared with the wrong person to apologise for the error and outline steps it had taken taken to protect their transaction history.

“We believe the impact on these customers is low, but we will work with them to address any concerns they have,” the statement said.

■■ECOMIC REBOUND

Business recovery boost ‘run its course’ Businesses are more upbeat about their own outlook but there are signs the economic rebound may be levelling out.

ANZ’s monthly survey of businesses sentiment showed headline confidence improved to a net -32 per cent, up from -34.4 in June.

When asked about the prospects for themselves, a net 9 percent expected a deterioration, a 17-point improvement from June.

ANZ chief economist Sharon Zollner said the result, although positive, was below what was expected.

“We saw the preliminary data for the month in early July and that was a decent bounce from June, which was great, but the full month data for July we actually saw quite a lot of indicators slip a little bit, suggesting that the bounce out of lockdown has run its course.”

Zollner believed the “slip” was driven in large part by the outbreak of Covid-19 cases in Australia over the month.

“What’s happening in Australia is really quite disheartening for everybody and although China is our largest export market, Australia is also very important, particularly for out manufacturing sector.

“There was sort of a theme across the business outlook survey that the outward looking sectors of agriculture and manufacturing perhaps were a bit weaker than the inward looking sectors who had been enjoying this strong bounce out of the lockdown.”

Zollner described the economy as being in a “sweet spot” at the moment, as it sat between two major economic shocks – the blow dealt by the lockdown and the impending wave of job losses when the government’s wage subsidy scheme rolls off in September.

“There was the lockdown where a third of economic activity just simply couldn’t happen and then the bounce out of that, but then also we’ve got the economic shock from the closed border and that’s still coming really.

“We’ve seen some firm closures and some redundancies but the big fiscal stimulus, the wage subsidies, that still’s largely in the pipeline.”

Forward looking indicators in the business survey had increased on levels in June.

■■FLIGHT CENTRE

Flight Centre lays off 230 staff Flight Centre New Zealand is laying off 230 staff who had been furloughed form the travel agency.

The company laid the blame on borders staying closed for longer than they expected and the winding down of the wage subsidy.

Managing director David Coombes said the firm was making decisions now to ensure its survival.

There was no signal the wage subsidy could be replaced, he said.

“The reality of our industry is that

we’ve been operating for four to five months now, since this started, with no revenues.”

The firm was still incurring costs to ensure customers could redeem travel credits or get refunds from airlines and other travel providers, he said.

“It’s an awkward position to be in whereby we’ve got no revenue, we’ve still got costs, the wage subsidy, which has been helpful but doesn’t cover the whole cost of op-

erating your businesses, is coming to an end, and there’s no signal at this point in time what other support might be forthcoming.”

There was no insurance that covered the company for this situation, he said. “There are many parts of New Zealand that feel like we’re getting back to some kind of normal.

“But if you’re in an industry which is dependent on the borders being open, there isn’t a kind or normal going on.”

■■COMMERCIAL BAY

Businesses struggling at mall The country’s newest upmarket shopping mall is giving some shops a rent holiday to help soften Covid-19’s economic blow.

Commercial Bay – a $1 billion development with more than 120 shops – occupies a city block in downtown Auckland.

It opened last month – just as vacancy signs started appearing in shop windows along Queen Street.

But even in the city’s shiny new shopping precinct, business is tough.

Chris Monaghan owns Cali Press, a wholefoods café on the ground floor of the new shopping behemoth, Commercial Bay. He says it was a “no brainer” to open a café given it sits at the gateway to Auckland for cruise ships.

But sales were half those expected and the café is among some the landlord – Precinct – has given a rent holiday.

“It’s just the way the perfect storm has developed where we’ve now

Monaghan said landlords need to play their part in keeping shops open.

“The revenues aren’t there, the sales aren’t there so it takes a collaborative approach from a landlord.

a global perspective, my opinion is we’re going to be the shiny new clean thing. We should hopefully see a bounce-back and be ready for it. It would be a shame if when it does bounce back, we’ve turned into a ghost town.”

His café sits among New Zealand-owned boutique retailers, including Aotea, which sells health and beauty products made on Great Barrier Island.

It’s Aotea’s first bricks and mortar shop and founder Tama Toki said the target market was supposed to be tourists.

“One of the reasons for coming into Commercial Bay, into the city, was to benefit from that flow of tourism and get credibility in our offshore markets Japan and China.”

He said the focus was now on domestic sales, which are tracking well, but the future is uncertain.

“Who knows how it’s going to shake out. I’m hopeful, but anticipating some slowdown.”

any drivers regard their smaller SUV/crossover as the way of getting from A to B with minimal drama or fuss, while others want to get driving enjoyment from doing so, particularly when venturing on out of town longer drives.

Of course with the likes of these, and in this case VW’s newest and smallest model urban SUV, you don’t expect straight line speed or sports-car like cornering, but then it’s great when a rewarding drive is actually delivered.

This new model, which is based on the Polo and is Spanish built, packs a lot into its 4.1-metre length.

There’s a four-model range, of which the first three, the Life ($34,240), Style ($38,490) and 1st Edition (with additional styling and uprated sound system and costing $39,990) come with one-litre, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol engines delivering 85kW and 200Nm from 20003000rpm.

The R-Line featured today however has more powerful 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, with 110kW and 250Nm of torque.

All have 7-speed twin-clutch autos, and are front-wheel-drive.

They’re nicely proportioned, have smart spoke 18-inch alloys, LED headlights, roof rails and privacy glass with a VW-Family look about them, so they sit smartly in the car park!

The neatly organised cabin proved easy to get in and out of, with both front seats having height adjustment (which remains a rarity in many vehicles).

These are both easy to read and operate.

With the sat-nav you can either show this on the large 8-inch centre screen, or in a reduced size display between the circular speedo and rev-counter (they can be also quickly be changed to digital readouts).

All of which successfully – mostly – diverts your attention from the harder plastics of the remaining dash surfaces.

There’s a traditional gear selector (the start button lives on the left-hand side of this), and pull-up handbrake.

Meanwhile, odds-and-ends storage space in the cabin while adequate is limited – perhaps this will encourage tidy Kiwis!

This certainly didn’t matter at all, for the front seats offer both space, comfort and adjustability, although they don’t have internal heating.

The front passenger seat does have child seat mountings, and the airbag for it can be easily turned off.

The rear seat slides so you can either max the passenger space (three standard size adults will fit though two are of course best) or the luggage space, which is 385 litres to 455 litres with seats up, or 1281

litres with them folded.

Plus, there’s a full-sized spare wheel below.

The view for all within is very good.

So it’s all set up to be a very pleasant, easy drive drive about town, and there’s a load of driver assist/safety systems.

These include a busy lane-keep system, blind spot monitoring ,sensors, a wide angle reverse camera and more helping out with this.

Only the R-Line has active-cruise control.

Efficiency is the keynote for the R-Line’s 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol especially with its peak torque of 250Nm being on hand right from 1500rpm through to 3500rpm.

That’s just where it’s needed for decent low end/mid-range grunt, and then so willingly to be quick as it can for those who so wish.

The proactive and smooth, twin-clutch 7-speed makes the most of that, and then even more so in the easily-selected Sport mode.

Meanwhile the start/stop system just gets on doing its thing in the interests of fuel economy.

The claimed overall fuel use is 5.5L/100km, while historically that for the rather new test T-Cross is an indicated 7.4L/100km.

About town the direct and predictable steering is light, but then through open road corners the T-Cross turns-in nicely, and even though you are sitting that little bit higher, handles very nicely, with little body movement and a comfy, quiet and settled ride.

Return of representative sport a great result

W

hen life hands you lemons, you’re supposed to make lemonade.

But what about when you’re a sporting code and life hands you Covid-19, what are you supposed to make then?

In the case of Mid Canterbury sporting codes, it’s make hay, while you can and the sun shines, figuratively speaking.

Representative sports are coming back as we emerge from the lockdown mist, with Mid Canterbury Netball getting set for their Hanan Shield Day and this week Mid Canterbury Rugby announcing their representative schedule for the coming months.

The majority of people play sport for the fun of it all – but there are also those who wish to strive for higher honours, players across all variations of sport who want to slip into the green and gold of Mid Canterbury and represent this region we call home with pride.

From the heights of provincial rugby and netball, right down to minority sports like indoor bowls and petanque, there really are no boundaries.

So to see those opportunities starting to present themselves again for those who chase the higher goals is fantastic, and despite everything we’ve been through in a sporting world this

year we will still be able to celebrate the success of our region’s sporting stars and commiserate collectively over their losses.

Mid Canterbury Rugby’s decision to host a Chairman’s XV v President’s XV as part of their representative season this year is a bit of a masterstroke.

There’s been so much hype around the prospect of the North v South match following Super

Rugby this year that jumping on the bandwagon and building up a bit of excitement about seeing 30 of our best belt it out against each to find our ultimate rep team is a marketing dream.

The old Town and Country battles used to be some of the best

days of rugby in the year both as a spectator and a player.

The chance to play alongside people who you normally would play against and build combinations and camaraderie was always cherished and highly anticipated.

Covid has given us the opportunity to think outside the box and re-evaluate how we do things and it’s important that we take an open-minded approach to it and not be scared to try new things.

No idea, is a bad idea in these circumstances, and ensuring that there are further opportunities away from just the club level is vital at the moment.

So let’s keep the ball rolling.

Jaguares forced to shed top players Last year’s Super Rugby runners-up, the Jaguares have released all of their top players because they can no longer afford their salaries due to the fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.

The President of the Argentine Rugby Union, Marcelo Rodriguez, said the cancellation of 2020 Super Rugby and the subsequent loss of TV, sponsorship and ticket revenue, meant there was no way to keep their best players in Argentina.

“We had to be straight with the players so they know the situation, with the uncertainty and the huge impact in the southern hemisphere,” he said.

The Jaguares had effectively operated as a shadow Argentina squad since joining Super Rugby in 2016 and last year finished runners-up to the Crusaders.

This year’s tournament was suspended in March with just seven of the 18 rounds played.

Australia and New Zealand have since started domestic editions, while South Africa are hoping to get a competition up and running before the end of the year.

Jaguares coach Gonzalo Quesada has already left to take over at Stade Francais and eight senior players, including the last two captains,

Agustin Creevy and Jeronimo de la Fuente, have joined European clubs.

Governing body SANZAAR still hopes to play a Rugby Championship test tournament in New Zealand in November.

Argentina’s Pumas have selected almost exclusively home-based players for the last few years but Rodriguez said coach Mario Ledesma would be given the freedom to choose his squad from further afield.

“I understand the context and we respect the decisions (of the players to leave) because they have more convenient scenarios,” Rodriguez Jaguares captain Jeronimo de la Fuente and Crusaders capsaid. tain Sam Whitelock ahead of the 2019 final.

Highlanders’ focus purely on Blues clash The Highlanders are ready to move on from the controversy in Queenstown at the weekend.

A group of seven players spent the bye weekend at an apartment complex in the resort town. Their rowdy Friday evening led to police being called on Saturday morning following complaints about the noise.

Highlanders assistant coach Tony Brown said the incident had been addressed and the side was

focused on its match against the Blues at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Sunday.

“We’ve moved on from that.

“The boys obviously let themselves down and the team down, so they’ve got a big job this weekend to make it up to the team,” he said.

The players involved in the incident were not named and will not be stood down from any rugby. They have received individual

sanctions but those penalties are being kept in-house.

Games against the Blues hold a special significance for Brown.

“For us this is always a special game – playing for the Gordon Hunter Memorial,” Brown said.

“A lot of our focus early in the week has been about him and learning what he was about as a man and how much everyone loved playing for him.

“For myself, obviously Gordie

picked me as a 20-year-old back in ’95. Around that time everyone just loved Gordie.”

Hunter was a former All Blacks selector and assistant coach.

He coached Otago from 1992 to 1995 and both the Highlanders and the Blues.

Hunter died in Dunedin in 2002 at the age of 52.

Brown also revealed that former All Black winger Nehe Milner-Skudder might not be sight-

ed in a Highlanders’ strip this season.

“Milner-Skudder is starting to get into some full-contact stuff with us but he’ll still be a couple of weeks away. Hopefully he’ll play a bit of club rugby in the near future.”

With just three weeks remaining in Super Rugby Aotearoa, his debut looks more likely in the second year of his contract with the franchise.

Entries opened this week for the iconic Peak to Pub multisport event and there’s extra reason for organisers to celebrate the 2020 edition.

This year’s event, scheduled for September 19, will be the 21st edition of the race and while there’s no plans to replace the complimentary can of beer at the finish line with a yard glass or a line of shots, there is definitely going to be some form of celebration.

“We’ll do something a little bit different, I think that’s a certainty,” Richie Owen, part of the organising team for the event, said this week.

“We’re really excited, the last few events have sold out and we hope that we can get to that point again.”

The competition is capped at 375 entries, and with entries opening during the middle of the week there was already a steady stream of names coming through.

Missing though will be the handful of international competitors who usually make the trek to New Zealand for the event, unless there is a rapid change in the border restrictions that would allow it to happen.

“We have people who come from all over New Zealand, it’s really grown in stature over the years and is

The race, which covers an altitude of more than 2000 metres, consists of a 2km ski from the top of Mt Hutt then an 18km bike ride down the winding access road, before competitors are then asked to put foot to the tarseal and run the 12km into the Methven township – with a wee dip in the Rangitata Diversion Race along the way for good measure.

The finish line, always ably manned by the local Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade, sits outside the Blue Pub. Entries can come in the form of individuals across a wide array of categories and age groups and there’s also two-person and three-person team events.

The two-person team event sees one member ski and bike, or bike and run with the other team member completing the third leg.

Owen said there had been some discussion around altering the ski-leg of the event a little from previous years to mark the 21st holding of the event but that all would be revealed in due course.

A back-up date due to weather has been set for Sunday, September 20.

DeFilippi Memorial Trot turns 25

By David Di Somma Not a day goes by when Colin and Julie DeFilippi don’t think about their son Darren.

“It still hurts thinking about him and what he has missed out on in life,” says Julie.

The 25th running of the Darren DeFilippi Memorial Trot will be held at Addington Raceway tonight.

It marks a quarter of a century since the talented junior driver was killed in a threecar crash as he returned from the Orari races.

“We have both struggled,” says Colin.

“Sometimes it feels like just 10 years, other times it feels like an eternity.”

“We both still have sleepless nights since the accident, and although life goes on – it’s still hard to live with,” says Julie “At the time of the accident it was front and foremost all the time. Now it’s still there,

but you can concentrate on other things a little more.”

Colin remembers a young man who was “focused and with his heart in the game”.

Julie says he also had “gorgeous smiling eyes, and when he smiled it melted my heart”.

Darren had 14 wins in two years of driving, his last drive was a sixth on Stambro (trained by Colin) at Geraldine just hours before his death.

Stambro was also killed in a separate accident on the same road on the same day (November 25, 1995).

The DeFilippis have never found out the exact detail around the crash.

“We know a car crossed the centre line and hit two cars, we don’t know if she had fallen asleep or what.”

“She broke an arm and was disqualified from driving for six months.”

In the DeFilippi family home there is a constant reminder of their teenage son, with a memorial cabinet that includes his photos, his racing colours, and trophies.

“We will never forget him,” says Julie.

She also praises her husband’s support over the years, and their daughter Mandy, who she describes as a “tower of strength”.

“She was just 17 when this happened.

“It had a big impact, and she is amazingly strong to have coped like she has.”

The DeFilippis will be at Addington tonight – for them personally, they know it won’t be easy.

“Many of the junior drivers weren’t even born when Darren was around, but there’s been a lot of support from trainers and everyone else.

“His trophy is held in high esteem by the junior drivers, and that makes us very proud,” says Julie.

Darren DeFilippi was a popular young driver.

Morrison picks up second New Zealand title He had a challenge in front of him, but Johnny Morrison was up to the task.

Heading down to Invercargill yesterday morning, Morrison knew his job, the hard part was always going to be achieving it.

night at Alexandra Park to draw level with him on the New Zealand Junior Drivers’ premiership.

It meant, drive a winner yesterday, or face heading to Addington tonight, needing a win with two rough chances.

The day didn’t start too well.

Two unplaced runs in the first

two races, before he looked home on Rydgemont Milly only for the horse on the inside to boot back up and beat him.

Then he gave Racing Minister every possible opportunity, only for it to find nothing in the straight.

At that point that task looked

tough, but a peach of a steer on Miss Impression late in the day saw Morrison salute and move one clear of Ferguson with 34 wins for the season.

There’s still racing at Addington tonight to come, but Ferguson is done for the season, and Ben Hope, who is on 30 winners for

the term, would need to drive four winners tonight just to draw level, while Sheree Tomlinson would need to pick up an unlikely five wins.

So, Morrison – barring a miracle is home, and can reasonably safely lay claim to his second New Zealand title.

Fox gives himself three months “There are a few guys that might go a little stir-crazy by the end of this.”

New Zealand golfer Ryan Fox says there will some players who won’t cope with the return to tournament play under the strict Covid-19 safety protocols.

Fox returned to the European Tour last week, and just four days after arriving in the UK he managed a top 10 finish in the British Masters near Newcastle.

Not a bad return for the 33-yearold, who in April didn’t think he would be playing again this year and spent his lockdown time chipping and putting around his Auckland home.

Earlier this month Englishman Andrew Johnston admitted his mental health struggles during the pandemic and withdrew from the Tour, saying he felt uneasy in the bubble environment.

The UK has had more than 300,000 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 46,000 deaths.

However, sport returned in Britain on 1 June with behind-closeddoors competition.

The players on the European Tour are following strict health protocols and despite a few concerns about leaving New Zealand, Fox decided to make the trip.

Over the next three months he’ll play 12 tournaments with the goal of earning enough world ranking points to book him a spot at the Tokyo Olympics.

Whilst a busy schedule, it is one he believes he can handle, even with the added pressure of Covid-19.

“You get tested when you arrive at the tournament and then you’re restricted to your hotel room until the results come back, they check your temperature every day, you’ve got a symptoms check every day and they’re making sure everyone is wearing masks inside, you can only socialise with one other person and that has to be

Fox would normally have his wife Anneke with him based at their London apartment, but for safety reasons they decided it was best that she stayed in Auckland.

“We’ve basically got to enter a

bubble each week (before a tournament) and it’s only essential people – players, caddies and tournament staff – so with no spectators there was no point in my wife coming over.”

“It’s very different.

“I can drive back to the apart-

ment for a night in-between events to do some washing and repack but certainly not spending the amount of time in the apartment like we would in a normal year.”

Fox feels the best place to be is on the course.

“It’s almost that playing a tournament feels better than being in our apartment in London as it still just feels a bit dangerous going out in town on any public transport, even though everyone there is being safe with wearing masks.”

Lydia takes on caddy number six The coach of former world number ones Tiger Woods and Englishman Justin Rose has signed on with New Zealand golfer Lydia Ko (left).

Foley will be Ko’s sixth coach in four years with her world ranking having slumped to 52.

Ko will tee off in the pandemic interupted LPGA season when she competes inthe Drive On championship in Toledo starting today.

Foley has told New Zealand Golf Magazine that he was now working with Ko, saying he wanted to help her get “back to being Lydia”.

He is best-known for a stint as coach of Tiger Woods when the dominant men’s player of his generation struggled to maintain his phenomenal success rate as he sought to remodel his swing while battling injuries.

Foley has recently split with England’s Justin Rose, having worked for 11 years when Rose won all 10 of his PGA Tour titles, including his first major championship at the US Open in 2013.

STARS SET TO SHINE

High-level squash arrives in Mid Canterbury this weekend when a huge field of players take to the courts for the annual Ashburton Squash Open.

A full field of competitors, across a number of different grades will compete in the competition at the Harrison Street club which begins tonight, with finals scheduled for Saturday

evening in all grades.

Organisers have been working hard this week to have everything ready in preparation for the tournament, which has attracted a number of elite level players from across the South Island.

In the Men’s Open, New Zealand’s fourth ranked player, Oliver Johnston from the Burnside club, takes the spot as the top ranked player while Joseph Williams, who is currently No. 17 in the country

will fill the No. 2 spot.

The duo will be joined by Keidah Bungard, Caleb Madden, Scott Butterick, David Schultz and Thomas Cooper – all out-oftown players.

In the women’s open two local players will feature; Brooke Cornish-Madden and Christina Lima from the Ashburton Club.

Cornish-Madden enters the tournament as the No. 6 ranked player while Lima is the No. 8.

A star-studded field of players will step onto the court for the Ashburton Squash Open this weekend.

The competition’s other elite event is the Mixed Open with two local names featuring, both Katrina Palmer and Matt Speedy will compete alongside many out-oftown competitors.
