Free prescriptions introduced by Countdown will put pressure on local pharmacies in a competitive market to stay in operation. From Thursday last week, the supermarket chain’s six Canterbury in-store pharmacies were offering free prescriptions, in a move expected to save customers in the region more than $350,000 a year. Countdown’s head pharmacist Jeremy Armes said a key reason behind establishing Countdown Pharmacy in 2012 had been to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. “And providing free prescriptions is another way we can continue to help make that happen,” Armes said.

THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY

Countdown has 30 in-store pharmacies across New Zealand. Ashburton pharmacists are frustrated by the move in which an Australian-owned multi-national can support the loss-leader initiative due to its backing. Subsidised medications are provided on prescription by pharmacies, which charge $5. This fee is a tax which the pharmacy must forward on to Government and if it does not recover the fee from its customers, it has to pay this to the Government anyway, detracting from its bottom line. Wises Community Pharmacy manager Andy McKee said Countdown’s move was anti-competitive and undermined the viability of community pharmacy providers.

These providers played a vital role in Ashburton’s healthcare community. “Ultimately it is likely to result in the closure of a number of locally-owned businesses and a reduction in healthcare services for the wider community,” he said. Despite the concern, many customers are vowing to continue to support the model of community pharmacies which has served Ashburton well for years, where individual pharmacists and their staff get to know them and help with all sorts of advice and healthcare. Many commenting on the Guardian Facebook page this week talked of “consistent friendly service”, “cool, compassionate staff” and high expertise at their local pharmacy store.
