Ranfurly Shield fever set to hit BY MATT MARKHAM

Southern victory P24
Ranfurly Shield fever will sweep over the Ashburton District ahead of this Friday’s clash with Canterbury for the legendary piece of New Zealand rugby silverware. The Mid Canterbury Hammers will line up for their 15th shot at the Log O’ Wood at the Ashburton Showgrounds on Friday afternoon and take on the might of big brother Canterbury in the clash which will garner national attention. A big crowd is expected to roll into the showgrounds for the match and while not keen to speculate on what the ground numbers could reach, Mid Canterbury Rugby Union boss, Ian Patterson was expecting a good turnout. “It’s probably not like it was 20 years ago where the town would shut down for the afternoon,” he said. “But I’ve noticed, even just over the
course of the weekend that there is a real growing interest in it, whereas probably a couple of weeks ago it didn’t really feel like there was.” The recent deluge of rain that has fallen on the Ashburton District has made preparations for the match difficult, particularly the main field at the showgrounds which Patterson said has been handled with care. “That’s been the main concern for us, is getting the ground ready to play on. “The amount of rain that has fallen certainly hasn’t helped that but hopefully after a couple of good drying days like we have had for the past couple of days it will be as good as we can possibly get it.” With uncertainty around crowd numbers, preparing the space for spectators has also proven to be a difficult task to undertake.
Extra seating for a few hundred more people has been brought in to sit adjacent to the main grandstand while the usual vantage point from the hill will also be in action. “There’s been some good support from local businesses who have been keen to come into the corporate areas too. It’s really just a case of seeing what rolls through the gate.” The match is set to kick-off 2.35pm with admission $20 for an adult and children under 17 free. The Mid Canterbury side had a rough time of it in their final hit-out for the match when they were beaten well and truly by Southland in Waikouaiti on Saturday, losing 68-7.
