An extensive scoping exercise has given a troubled Methven school guidance to move in a positive new direction. The board of trustees at Our Lady of the Snows School requested support from the Ministry of Education earlier this year to help resolve governance issues, which some parents claimed had contributed to a declining roll. In May the school’s roll dropped to
its lowest number since at least 2009, with just 41 enrolled pupils. Limited Statutory Manager Virginia Noonan was appointed that month, and after a lengthy period of consultation with staff, parents and members of the community, she has completed her action plan for the school. In a letter sent to the school community, she outlined the steps required to ensure a positive change in the school’s culture. “As a school community, it is crucial
that everyone is working towards the same goals,” she said. That included putting support strategies and protocols in place to allow the board and principal to effectively manage personnel issues, strengthening the school’s special character, and ensuring the community has a positive perception of the school.
