An extensive scoping exercise has given a troubled Methven school guidance to move in a positive new direction. The board of trustees at Our Lady of the Snows School requested support from the Ministry of Education earlier this year to help resolve governance issues, which some parents claimed had contributed to a declining roll. In May the school’s roll dropped to

its lowest number since at least 2009, with just 41 enrolled pupils. Limited Statutory Manager Virginia Noonan was appointed that month, and after a lengthy period of consultation with staff, parents and members of the community, she has completed her action plan for the school. In a letter sent to the school community, she outlined the steps required to ensure a positive change in the school’s culture. “As a school community, it is crucial

that everyone is working towards the same goals,” she said. That included putting support strategies and protocols in place to allow the board and principal to effectively manage personnel issues, strengthening the school’s special character, and ensuring the community has a positive perception of the school.

Gorillas settle into Orana Park New Zealand’s first gorillas have settled in to their new home at Orana Wildlife Park in Christchurch. Powerful primates Fataki, 12, Fuzu, 7, and their half-brother, Mahali, 6, arrived in the middle of last month. They have completed quarantine and park staff have since been steadily settling the animals to their newly-built $6 million home. From today, visitors will be able to view the Western Lowland gorillas. “Our team are incredibly excited about having these magnificent animals in at Orana,” Orana’s chief executive Lynn Anderson said.

Hemsworth’s trimdown Australian actor Chris Hemsworth had to survive on just 500 calories a day to portray a shipwrecked sailor in director Ron Howard’s new disaster movie In The Heart Of The Sea. The Thor star is used to bulking-up for his action films, but this time he battled constant hunger pangs for the real-life maritime epic, which documents the sinking of a whaling ship in the Pacific Ocean in 1820. The disaster inspired Herman Melville’s classic tale Moby-Dick. Hemsworth tells US news show Entertainment Tonight, “We had to shoot the really skinny stuff where we drop down to 5, 6, 700 calories a day, a good three or four weeks...” The actor admits the experience was “pretty uncomfortable”, but he was thankful he and his co-stars Cillian Murphy, Ben Whishaw and Paul Anderson were “together in our misery”. In the Heart of the Sea is due for release in December.

Donovan’s retro tour Former Neighbours pin-up boy Jason Donovan will relive his pop star days with a three-month concert tour of Britain. Donovan will take to the stage in the UK next February for his Ten Good Reasons & Greatest Hits show. It will be a nostalgic time for UK Neighbours fans as well as the millions of teens who idolised Donovan who shot to fame playing Scott Robinson on the Aussie soapie. In his heyday, Donovan sold more than three million records in the UK and and his debut album Ten Good Reasons was one of the highest-selling albums of 1989.

Why did you kill Cecil? A Kiwi mum and her two children living in Minnesota have staged a peaceful protest against the man who hunted and killed Zimbabwe’s beloved lion Cecil. Hayley Hoppe, originally from Auckland, along with her two children Piper, 10, (right) and Paisley, 9, went to Walter Palmer’s dental surgery office in Bloomington, Minnesota. The office has been shut since his identity was revealed this week but protesters have flocked there, as world outrage about the killing grows. Armed with posters reading, “Dr Palmer why did you kill Cecil?”, the children stood for two hours overnight as a peaceful protest. Piper said she was upset about Cecil’s death. “I felt disgusted and mad at Dr Palmer to kill an animal like that,” she said from the United States. “I wanted to give a voice to animals who can’t speak for themselves.”

Depardieu banned French actor Gerard Depardieu has reportedly been banned from entering Ukraine for five years after repeatedly voicing his support for Russia. Depardieu became a Russian citizen in 2013 following a dispute over taxes in his native France, and he has been full of praise for his adopted country and its president, Vladimir Putin, ever since. Earlier this month, Depardieu’s name was added to the list of 500 foreign figures not welcome in the country for their outspoken “support of the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty”. The country’s culture minister, Ivan Kirilenko, has now reportedly sanctioned the 66-year-old over his support of Russia’s invasion of the Ukrainian territory of Crimea in 2014 and has barred him from entering the country for five years, according to Variety.com.

Mid Canterbury schools are struggling to entice teachers away from the big cities and into rural areas. While schools in metropolitan areas are reportedly seeing as many as 150 teachers applying for roles, it appears the opposite is occurring in the Ashburton District. Mid Canterbury Principals Association president Chris Murphy said schools were defi-

nitely not finding themselves inundated with applicants. “People just don’t want to leave the cities, they don’t want to come to the regions,” he said. Part of the problem was that families making the move to the regions often had to find jobs for both partners, which was not always easy, he said. “Historically, especially primary school teaching, hasn’t always been the primary income in the family,” he said. The last two positions ad-

vertised at Methven Primary School, where Mr Murphy is the principal, attracted just two and three applicants respectively. However jobs advertised later in the year could attract as many as 30 or 40 applicants, he said. “In a sense there’s a bit of frustration because if we advertise a job in the middle of the year we don’t get many applicants, but when we advertise at the end of the year we generally get a surplus,” he said. The influx of teachers look-

ing for employment in big cities could also be partially attributed to the number of students choosing to study teaching. While tertiary institutions used to have caps on the number of places for teaching students, they had now become more like small businesses, he said. “Bums on seats equals dollars in the bank,” he said. The increasing competition for jobs could put some people off the profession, which could eventually lead to a lack of

Changes to the shearer training model are becoming apparent in a dearth of new blood coming into the industry, a former tutor says. Retired Ashburton shearer Rocky Bull said funding was withdrawn from private training company Tectra last year, and the job of training shearers handed over to Primary ITO. “They haven’t been doing a lot recently,” Mr Bull, who spent three years tutoring shearing courses, said. “They haven’t been trained to train – they’ve just been pulling guys out of the industry and they haven’t been offering many courses. Down the track we will see the impact. “We are hoping that somewhere along the line Tectra will start up again in some form, but it isn’t going to happen for a while, because the funding has gone.” And so have the sheep. Mr Bull estimated about 90 per cent of the breeding stock had disappeared from Mid Canterbury. Proshear director Grant Smith, based in Rakaia, brings shearers in from the North Island to bolster his workforce during the busiest two months of the year – from now until the end of September. He said it is tough for young shearers to break into the in-

dustry. “The young guys are not really paying their way until they get up to 200 sheep a day,” Mr Smith said. In some cases this could take two or three years. Most young shearers currently in the business had parents in the industry, he said. Mr Smith said shearing was still a lucrative career option with the country’s top shear-

ers earning up to $120,000 a year and good average shearers sitting around $80,000 to $90,000. The composite sheep breeds introduced in recent years to increase the lamb crop are bigger and more vigorous than the traditional breeds, adding another layer of difficulty for new shearers. “They are quite heavy and

fiery, it’s a hard day for young shearers starting out – it’s hard on everyone.” He would also like to see the training model ironed out for the good of the industry. “There will always be sheep to shear and there are a lot of older shearers in the industry, but they will gradually fade away and we need young people coming through,” he said.

Police enter racial abuse inquiry Police have launched an investigation into racial abuse at a Christchurch rugby game. Christchurch Club winger Sake Aca was taunted to tears on Sunday following a match against Lincoln University. The Fijian asked his coach to remove him from the field when spectators began yelling racial abuse at him. Police have confirmed they have received a complaint from Canterbury Rugby Union’s general manager of community rugby. The complaint was made after a meeting between rugby officials. Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam said police are speaking to players involved as well as spectators. “It’s unacceptable that in this day and age anyone is subjected to any form of discrimination, particularly racial abuse, and I urge anyone responsible to show some moral courage and come forward to discuss and resolve the matter.” Christchurch head coach Daniel O’Brien said several of his players had been abused throughout the game but Aca was very upset. “I spoke to him as he came off the field and he was in tears and finding it very difficult to speak,” he said. Mr O’Brien said Aca went home to spend time with family. The Canterbury Rugby Football Union is also helping police to find out who the comments came from. “We’re keen to stamp it out ... [and are] pulling out all the stops to see whether we can identify who it was,” general manager Tim Gilkison said. The Ashburton District Council is an open book when it comes to looking at options for a new or upgraded $16 million civic building. While there has been suggestions a new building could include a new district library, a suggestion mentioned at a council committee meeting yesterday was that Ashburton College’s school library merge with the district library. Council chief executive officer Andrew Dalziel said the principal of the college, Grant McMillan, had suggested to him the combined library project. He said he did not want to dismiss the idea, however in

Mr McMillan’s mind this library would need to be located by the school, and he asked the question whether this would be the best outcome for the council. Mr Dalziel began to talk about the project after councillor Ken Cutforth asked a question on whether the council was still in the process of deciding whether it would enter into an ownership or lease agreement associated with the civic building project. Mr Dalziel said the council was looking at all options and would not dismiss any reasonable ideas at this stage, including anyone wanting to propose vacant land for the project. Mr Dalziel explained further

after the meeting the options ranged from strengthening the current civic building and library, to merging the two on any of the current sites, or other sites it could purchase or lease ranging from neighbouring sites such as the Ashburton District Court site, in the town’s CBD at the proposed Eastfields development, and on land the council owns at the business estate. A combined civic and library building could offer the service of people being able to pay their rates and dog registrations on weekends. The first step is a feasibility study to address the various options. “Somewhere in there there will be an answer that pops

out the other end,” Mr Dalziel said. In Long-Term Plan submissions on the civic building proposal, 150 members of the public supported it, and 104 opposed it. Mr McMillan confirmed late yesterday he and Mr Dalziel had discussed a joint school and public library concept. Mr McMillan said similar projects were working in Riccarton and Akaroa, and such a model offered advantages around collaboration, co-operation and saving taxpayer and ratepayer money. However, while a good concept, it was complicated by the detail, and such a combined project would have to be located near the college.

A family whose home was destroyed by fire just days after they moved in are looking for a fresh start in Mid Canterbury. The family of four, who asked not to be named, had been living in their Little Akaloa home for less than a week when it was gutted by fire in the early hours of July 26. The father said his wife initially thought she was waking up from a dream where she was drowning – however she soon realised she had inhaled a mouthful of smoke. She went downstairs to investigate and found the lower level of the house was also filled with smoke. “I told her to get upstairs and get the kids out,” he said. Because they had only just moved in they had yet to get their phone connected, meaning the man had to jump in his car and drive to a payphone to call the fire service. As he bundled his “panicked” children into the car one side of the house exploded. “It looked like somebody had let off a firework,” he said.

A wayward pussycat has been blamed for a power outage that affected nearly 10,000 households in Tauranga on Wednesday night. Power was cut to almost 10,000 Powerco customers about 7.20pm after a cat climbed on to outdoor electrical switchgear at the Otumoetai substation. The Greerton, Otumoetai, Matua and Bethlehem areas were affected by the outage. Powerco acting network operations manager Dean Stevenson said all power was restored by 8.25pm. The cat did not survive the incident. Powerco acting corporate affairs manager Krysti Wetton said there was no information about where the cat had come from. “Powerco is taking this matter seriously and is investigating how the cat entered the substation,” she said. - NZME

Bail denied Bail has been denied for a 56-yearold man arrested after a drug bust linked to the Head Hunters gang. Interim name suppression lapsed for Thomas Gordon Edwardson yesterday at his appearance in the Auckland District Court. He was arrested on 16 charges linked to Operation Sylvester on Tuesday. Judge Christopher Field indicated an option of bail under electronic monitoring was a possibility that could be explored in the future. Edwardson faces eight charges related to the manufacturing, possession and supply of methamphetamine and two charges related to ecstasy. He is charged with organised crime and attempting to procure the grievous bodily harm of a man. He is charged with more offences than anyone arrested as part of Operation Sylvester. - NZME

Auckland Mayor Len Brown and councillors have received a 2.3 per cent pay rise from the independent Remuneration Authority. Mr Brown’s salary will increase from $259,500 to $265,500 and councillors’ salaries will rise from $101,900 to $104,250. The salary of deputy mayor Penny Hulse increases from $146,200 to $149,600. Manurewa-Papakura councillor Calum Penrose said he and Franklin councillor Bill Cashmore did not think the increase was justified and wanted the governing body to reject the increase. - NZME

Mysterious charge The Prime Minister’s office racked up a $87 taxi fare in Dublin in April. The bill came as a surprise to officials, because its cardholder was 18,000km away and has not been in Ireland for two years. The mystery taxi fare was revealed in credit card statements released by the Department of Internal Affairs yesterday. A spokeswoman said the credit card details, which belonged to one of Mr Key’s staffers, were fraudulently used to purchase a cab fare in Dublin without the Prime Minister’s knowledge. An official asked the bank to explain the charge. “It was most certainly not authorised by the cardholder or anybody else in this organisation.” The bill has since been reimbursed by the bank. - NZME

One in three victims are men

Ashburton police are urging male victims of domestic abuse to come forward as startling new statistics show one in three victims of domestic abuse are men. Research in association with the Department of Internal Affairs, Alcohol and Drug Association of New Zealand and the Canterbury Men’s Centre

has found that 38 per cent of recent victims of family violence in Canterbury were male. Ashburton police Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said while the numbers were not as high in Mid Canterbury, police did still work with male victims of domestic assault. For some men it was difficult to report domestic violence because they could be perceived as “weak”, he said.

However that was not the case, and he urged all victims of domestic violence to come forward regardless of gender. For Mid Canterbury Family Violence Co-ordinator Sergeant Jim Sole, there is definitely a stigma around men reporting domestic violence. “One of the challenges we face is that to a certain extent, we are still a patriarchal society,” he said. “Men are expected to have a

degree of power, so for a man to come forward and say ‘well I’m actually getting assaulted by my female partner’, it would be seen as weakness.” There was also a lack of support services targeted towards male victims of domestic violence, he said. “Men probably tend to support men in a different way than women do,” he said. “We’re probably more inclined

to do that on a one-on-one basis rather than turning to a group of other men, and particularly men who are strangers.” Family First NZ national director Bob McCoskrie said the research showed that ideology had “blinded us” to the needs of many victims of family violence. “The gender focus has meant that we’ve missed focusing on and tackling some of the real causes,” he said.

The world on show in Methven exhibition Landscapes from around the world will feature at an exhibition of two Staveley artists which opens tonight. Liquid Light, by Jen Dearborn and Susie Millichamp, showcases over 40 paintings, mainly oils and water-colours.

Ms Dearborn has been overseas recently, inspiring works of Arizona scapes and Alaskan forests. Mrs Millichamp’s work will include collections, including of Wanaka, Erewhon Station and Italy. Mrs Millichamp said

the annual exhibition opening generally always attracted a good turnout from the Staveley, Mt Somers and Methven area. She and Ms Dearborn both attended a Staveley art group each week. Their impressionist painting

styles were unique and recognisable in their own way. “Our works complement each other because they are a bit different from each other,” she said. The exhibition will run for the month of August.

Brace yourselves Mid Canterbury ratepayers – next week the first rates demands for the new financial year will reach the district’s mail boxes. They will bring an overall 5.2 per cent increase on last year, with the greatest burden of that increase being shared by the district’s small villages. Ashburton District Council finance and business support committee members heard at a meeting of the committee yesterday that about 100 of the rates demands would be sent by email for instalment one. This was following that number of ratepayers registering with the council to receive their demands electronically, a figure the council would like to see increase in order to save on postage and printing costs. The council sends out 15,800 rates notices six times per year, at an annual cost of $33,000 for postage and $24,000 for printing. The council has a number of applications to load for instalment two which will be done next month.

Police put up $50,000 reward West Auckland police have put up a $50,000 reward in a bid for information about the murder of Brett Fraser in Glen Eden last October and will consider immunity from prosecution for anyone who can help them find the killer. Mr Fraser was killed in October 2014 at the warehouse property he shared with his flatmate. Police believe the incident was motivated by a cannabis robbery. Detective Inspector Bruce Scott hoped the offer of a reward would prompt those with key information to come forward and offer this to investigators. - NZME

Keeping safe while partying has just got a whole lot easier, with Mid Cantabrians now able to access the Good One Party Register. Good One is a website where people can register their private parties and was designed to help inform people on how to host a safe party. It has been up and running in Christchurch since the beginning of last year and with the support of ACADS, Ashburton has jumped on the bandwagon. At the Good One launch party last night ACADS spokeswoman Kate Spicer said she was excited about the district’s link to the initiative. “ACADS got involved in the idea after initially looking at ways to provide safe partying information to young people and parents,” Ms Spicer explained. “The website was such a good tool that we decided to look at linking into it, and we are excited to now be in the position to launch the concept locally.”

A bungling burglar woke cancer sufferers when he smashed a glass door at the Cancer Society’s Daffodil House during a “disturbing” raid in Dunedin. But the would-be thief, who was only able to find loose change, left behind a bloody calling card in the building’s reception area after cutting himself while breaking in. Otago-Southland Cancer Society chief executive Mike Kernaghan said, while the break-in was frustrating, his concern lay with the patients who were asleep upstairs at the time of the raid early yesterday. “The most disturbing part about all of this is we have accommodation [for cancer patients],” he said. “Whilst there was no threat to any of them, you always get a bit worried when people break into a place where people are undergoing treatment [are staying].” The 11 rooms at Daffodil House were all occupied at the time of the burglary and the raid woke several patients. “It could have been potentially catastrophic if someone went down to see what was going on,” he said. Fortunately, none of the patients went downstairs to investigate. Campus Watch staff discovered the broken door, he said. “They are going through a tougher time as it is without having to deal with someone breaking into the building,” Mr Kernaghan said. “It’s really disappointing.” The raid was “pretty pointless” as cash and drugs were not held on the premises. The intruder could not access any other part of the building because of its security, Mr Kernaghan said. - NZME

Police are still in the “very early” stages of the investigation into the crash that killed 18-year-old Nakita May Strange and it is unclear when charges will be laid. Police yesterday confirmed Miss Strange as the 18-year-old who died after the Ford Laser in which she was a passenger was driven through a give-way controlled intersection and was T-boned by an oncoming Ford Courier ute early on Wednesday. The car was involved in a petrol drive-off from a central Dunedin service station shortly before the fatal crash. Miss Strange, of Invercargill, was one of six young people in the car, all of whom were taken to Dunedin Hospital. - NZME

Kiwis would be “aghast” and “deeply frustrated” that Tony Douglas Robertson raped and murdered Blessie Gotingco shortly after being released from jail, Prime Minister John Key says – and he isn’t ruling out new laws tougher than those just introduced. On Wednesday, Corrections Minister Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga announced an independent review would be carried out of Corrections’ monitoring of Robertson following his release from prison in 2013. Barred from teaching A teacher has been barred from teaching, censured, and told to pay costs after he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student. Oliver Day was teaching PE at Macleans College in Auckland when he initiated the relationship with the girl. The Teachers’ Disciplinary Tribunal alleged Day also tried to cover up the relationship, and contacted the student to try and influence a Board of Trustees investigation. The Complaints Assessment Committee referred the allegations to the New Zealand Teachers Disciplinary Tribunal. Around last April, Day invited the student to go for a drive. From that point the relationship developed into an intimate and sexual one, according to an agreed statement of facts. The teacher used Facebook and text messages to set up liaisons with the girl. In about November last year, Macleans received a complaint about inappropriate sexual conduct. - NZME

Dad accused of assaulting trustee The father of Down syndrome baby Leo Forrest is facing a charge of assaulting the trustee he asked to help look after a fund of hundreds of thousands of dollars raised in a public campaign for his son. The male-assaults-female charge carries a maximum penalty of two years in jail. Samuel Forrest, 37, is accused of assaulting Trina McLachlan on July 8 at the rented Massey home he shares with his Armenian wife, Ruzan Badalyan, and 7-month-old Leo. He pleaded not guilty in the Waitakere District Court yesterday and is to next appear September 21. Judge John Bergseng lifted name suppression. No occupation was listed for Mr Forrest on the court charge sheet. Ms McLachlan, who was a friend of Mr Forrest’s, acted as spokeswoman for him after an online appeal raised more than $500,000 for the baby from 17,900 donors. She became co-trustee of the fund at his request but earlier this month went public with concerns about how

the money was being spent. About $380,000 was originally put into the trust but the balance had reduced by about $100,000, Ms McLachlan said. Mr Forrest said the money was being managed responsibly and that there were investments Ms McLachlan did not know about. He said he had replaced her with “an independent non-beneficiary custodian” whom he would not name. He declined to comment about why they had fallen out. Mr Forrest was granted name suppression by a court registrar when he first appeared on the charge, six days after the alleged assault. Ms Badalyan gave birth to Leo on January 21 in Armenia, where disabled babies are often put in orphanages. Mr Forrest later said his wife had disowned Leo and he planned to raise him on his own in New Zealand. He set up an appeal on the Go Fund Me site to help with expenses, hoping to raise $60,000 to allow him to dedicate a year to raising Leo as a full-time solo-father back in New Zealand.

The couple has since reconciled and live in West Auckland. The Go Fund Me site recorded that more than $600,000 was raised, but Mr Forrest said that was incorrect, and the amount after fees of $40,000 came to “a little over A$500,000” at a time when the NZ and Australian dollars were near parity. The Herald has seen correspondence in which Mr Forrest authorised the trust be set up with a payment of A$350,000 and asked that he be paid from trust money $90,000 in the first year and up to $70,000 in the second for his role as “primary caregiver”. Last week, Mr Forrest told the Herald this was incorrect but declined to comment further. He was the fourth generation of his family to belong to the Exclusive Brethren but broke away in 2011, about the time his marriage to a church member foundered. He has four children from that marriage, whom he has not seen since. abour Party finance spokesman Grant Robertson needlessly poured gasoline over a fire on Monday when he told media that a bank was putting “the squeeze” on Mid Canterbury farmers. And he fanned the flames by incorrectly asserting his source was the Ashburton Guardian, which he erroneously said reported an Ashburton bank had “put a receiver on notice over financially vulnerable farmers”. The report to which he referred was about Labour Party claims that the Government was being complacent about rural economies and that it should talk to banks about dealing with farmers with low equity. The report, about national politics and the country’s dairy industry, referred to a claim from a verified source that a bank had put a receiver on notice regarding highly leveraged, lower equity farmers. It did not say it was an Ashburton bank or that it affected Ashburton farmers. It did say the Primary Industries Minister believed banks were broadly supportive of farmers and it included a commitment from one of these banks to work with them. In a subsequent report, politicians continued to call for government action, while banks restated their commitment and confirmed they were not the ones that instructed a receiver in Auckland. All the while, Mr Robertson’s release sat in many inboxes. Yesterday, the Timaru Herald reported a local farming leader calling the “news” about an unnamed bank in Ashburton “absolute nonsense”. Certainly, that claim was nonsense and not one made by this newspaper. That claim was made by a politician and recycled – unhelpfully, recklessly – in the media. For the record, our reporter’s source was close to the Auckland-based receiver. Some banks were aware of the move and two large lenders pointed our reporter to the stillunnamed bank. The bank stopped short of confirming the move. Consequently, it cannot be named. It was not an Ashburton bank or an Ashburton receiver. But that a bank has apparently put a receiver on notice is of interest while the banking industry pledges broad support in tougher times.

YOUR VIEW Gym competition While I appreciate the constraints of a story I do wish to expand on a quote reported in the Ashburton Guardian, July 29, 2015, that “she felt well and truly slapped by the existence of a further fitness centre being opened in Ashburton”. This type of terminology is not my normal style. In July last year Ashburton Mayor Angus McKay was reported as saying that council voting to manage the EA Network Centre Fitness Centre rather than having the space leased to an existing gym owner “could be seen as a slap in the face for local gym owners”. In a letter to the editor on August 3, 2014, I commented on the mayor’s distinct lack of support for and regard to local businesses if the council chose to operate the gym in compe-

tition with local gym owners in an already well subscribed market. The rest is history. My point this week is that having increased competition instigated by a council that chose not to stick to its knitting feels like the “slap in the face” the mayor alluded to. or some other excuse for meeting matters of public interest head on. The approach of most agencies has been one of overall lethargy and disinterest – clearly this falls in the too hard basket. Why not add “too scared”, “too sensitive”, “too political”, “too divisive”. The sad truth is that the recent instances are endemic and no-one will commit this to copy because there has been no evidence. And why is there no evidence because it seems as though no agency has shown the will and determination to confront the matter. It’s just banter we hear all the time, “she knows I’m joking”, “I’ve known them for ages, they’re fine with it”. This casual racism is symptomatic of an issue that has

become so prevalent and commonplace throughout New Zealand, but in my opinion particularly true of smalltown rural New Zealand – that it’s becoming the norm. Worse than this, is that it’s excused [with], “he’s just a redneck farmer, don’t take any notice of him”; to excuse it is to be complicit in the act. Unfortunately, the recent headlines concerning Sake Aka, say so much more about New Zealanders and New Zealand, supposedly a beacon of cultural and ethnic balance. We should be proud of how far we’ve come as a multicultural nation. I’ve always viewed Australia with derision at their longstanding, passive and impotent attempts at reconciliation and progress – now I don’t know if we’re all that different. Tom Kelly

Sorry I’m doing this as a message but I wish to remain anonymous and I’m very serious about that please. I absolutely LOVE doing things for other people and have recently found a neat FB page called Random Acts of Kindness (RAOK) started up by a guy called Phil Hands. “I don’t know the guy and by all accounts it seems he is a pretty good Christian bloke. It is SO neat to randomly do something kind for someone and somehow I would love to just have a day in our wee town where people might take up doing the same thing. It can be either a RAOK or a pay-itforward type action. “Pre-pay someone’s coffee at a cafe then quietly sit in a corner and watch someone get a big surprise when the barrista tells them it’s paid for ... pop some baking in someone’s mailbox, tell someone their parking meter has been paid for ... the opportunities are endless and it doesn’t have to cost a lot. “There ... I’ve got it off my chest. [I] just needed to tell someone how special it feels to give “energy” to others. I bet you would come up with some incredible ideas. Have a neat Tuesday.” I have already had some suggestions, like giving a neighbour in need a wheelbarrow full of firewood and pay it forward at the supermarket. Think the odd all-nighter is harmless? Think again. A new study has found that going without sleep may have deeper implications for our bodies than previously thought. Researchers at Sweden’s Uppsala University have found that just one sleepless night can alter the genes that control the biological clocks in our bodies’ cells. Changes in the clock genes have been previously linked to obesity and type 2 diabetes. The study is bad news for shift workers like nurses. At this point, the researchers don’t know how long the impact of the gene alteration impact lasts.

It could be that the changes are reset after one or two nights of good sleep.

Heads up Finally this week, here’s a heads up for local businesses. A new study confirms that the type of music heard during shopping can affect how much customers are willing to pay. Australian scientists conducted a series of experiments in which participants listening to various types of music were asked how much they’d be prepared to spend on products ranging from everyday items to more luxurious goods such as perfume and jewellery.

People walk slower while texting on their mobile phones to try to avoid accidents, according to new British research. And they often make large, exaggerated movements to negotiate crowds and compensate for their diminished vision. One of the researchers, Dr Conrad Earnest, had the idea for the study after becoming irritated at the “drunken weaving” of pedestrians on their mobile phones in Bath city centre. With the help of two University of Bath undergraduates, he took 30 people and made them complete three different walking tasks around an obstacle course. The participants - aged between 18 and 50 - did the course while walking normally, texting and walking, and texting and walking while being cognitively distracted with a simple maths test. The researchers examined the walkers’ gait using a 3D motion analysis system and modelled each task to assess the differences between trails. The authors found that participants took significantly longer to complete the course while texting and being cognitively distracted compared with just walking. Texting while being cognitively distracted also increased obstacle clearance, step frequency and decreased someone’s ability to walk in a straight line. The authors of the study suggest participants - when faced with cognitive challenges - decrease their walking speed to avoid accidents. Dr Earnest said: “One day I was walking on the high street and totally frustrated by the ‘drunken weaving’ about of texters who were also trying to carry on phone conversations during their shopping. “Deciding to seek refuge, I went into a local coffee shop and was equally annoyed by people in a queue placing orders, texting and or talking on their phones.” He said their main findings were that people slowed their walking speed, took more steps in their approach to common obstacles, and increased the height of their step to go up steps and over kerbs. “This study shows that people who are walking, texting and undertaking may

slow their pace and alter their gait as a protective measure to perform all the required tasks simultaneously,” he said. The authors suggest this study group may be more familiar with walking while interacting with mobile phones and that further research may be needed to examine older participants, who may be at a greater risk of tripping with such walking deviations. “It’s probably too optimistic to suggest that people learn to enjoy their walks and let the text and emails wait,” Dr Earnest said. “Perhaps a good middle ground is that if a text or email really can’t wait, then ‘pull to the side’, stand still, answer the text or email and continue along.” - PA

Greater risk for black men Black men have twice the risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer than white men, British researchers say. A study, which centred on England, also found that Asian men have around half the chance of being diagnosed with and dying from the disease compared with white men. Prostate Cancer UK, which carried out the research, said it could help individuals better understand their risk of developing prostate cancer and help them make an informed decision about whether

or not to have a prostate specific antigen test. Its research paper looked at the both the life-time risk of being diagnosed as well as dying from the disease for every major ethnic group. The team estimated that the life-time risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer is approximately one in eight (13.3 per cent) for white men, one in four (29.3 per cent) for black men (including black African, black Caribbean and other black groups) and one in 13 (7.9 per cent) for Asian men. - PA

Debris raises hopes By Peter trute Investigators are confident that a piece of debris found on an Indian Ocean island is from a Boeing plane of the same type as missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 but how much help the discovery will be to the ongoing search remains to be seen. Malaysian transport officials are on their way to the remote island of Reunion, off the east coast of Africa, after the discovery of the large piece that might be a wing flap from a Boeing 777 passenger jet - the same type as MH370. Australian authorities are working to identify the 2mlong piece found washed ashore and have cautioned that it may take some time. US air safety investigators reportedly have a “high degree of confidence” that the piece is a “flaperon” from the trailing edge of the wing of a Boeing 777. Australia’s Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss said yesterday it is too early to make assessments about whether the item is a part of the lost aircraft. “But it certainly is an interesting discovery,” Mr Truss told reporters.

Mr Truss said if the wreckage was identified as being from MH370 it would be consistent with other analysis and modelling that the plane is in the southern Indian Ocean. MH370 disappeared on March 8, 2014, with 239 people on board while travelling from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to Beijing. To date an Australian-led search has covered 55,000 square kilometres of sea floor, in a search area of 120,000 square kilometres. Danica Weeks, the wife of MH370 victim Paul Weeks, said

news of the discovery raised hopes of solving the mystery but also that she was clinging to a “minute hope” that passengers may have survived. Ms Weeks told The Daily Mail she still had “minute hope they may be coming home, which you hold onto with no evidence”. “On the other side, if it’s a piece of a plane we might be able to solve the mystery and bring him home and do what’s right for him,” she said. News of the discovery was painful for families in Malaysia, too.

Jacquita Gonzales, whose husband Patrick Gomes was MH370’s cabin crew supervisor, told AFP she had “been on the roller coaster many times”. “We have mixed feelings. If this is true, at least I know I can have peace and give my husband a proper send-off,” Ms Gonzales said. “But part of us still hopes they are out there alive somewhere.” Mr Truss said the debris was not in Australia’s search and rescue area so investigations would be led by Malaysian officials. Sara Weeks in Christchurch, whose brother Paul Weeks was on Flight 370, said it was hard to believe that after so long, a large piece of the plane could actually show up. “If it is from MH370, then I still have all the same questions: Where is it? Where is the rest of it? What happened to it?” Weeks said. “I believe we’ll find out what happened to it one day, regardless. Somebody knows what happened.” “It’s a great big gaping hole in everybody’s life,” Weeks said. “We need to find out what happened to get closure, and move on.” - AAP

Man sueing Etihad over fat passenger By Miranda Forster Long-haul air travel is rarely pleasant. But for Brisbane man James Bassos, his experience sitting next to a sick, obese passenger was so bad, he’s suing Etihad Airways. Mr Bassos is claiming he suffered a permanent back injury after being seated next to the man on a flight from Abu Dhabi to Sydney in which he says he was forced to spend hours twisting and contorting his body to avoid touching him. His claim, which was filed in 2012, states he was seated next to a person “of large body mass” who spilled into his chair and frequently coughed and expelled fluid from his mouth. The 38-year-old is claiming more than $227,000 for medical expenses and lost earnings and superannuation in a law-

suit in the District Court in Queensland. The flight, if direct, is almost 14 hours. Mr Bassos claims after five hours he felt marked pain and discomfort in his back and asked flight crew to move, but was told the plane was full. When the pain got worse he asked again and was allowed to move to a crew seat at the back

of the plane, according to his claim. However, Mr Bassos says he twice had to return to his original seat, including for the final 90 minutes of the flight before landing, after a staff member had invoked a security procedure. The Emirates-based interior designer says he now suffers back pain on exertion and after

prolonged sitting and standing. His sleep and concentration has allegedly been affected and he has been forced to take time off work. Etihad intends to defend the claim, and its lawyers appeared in court in Brisbane last week to try to have the case thrown out. “It is not unexpected or unusual for a passenger to be seated next to an overweight passenger on a fully booked flight,” says its statement of defence. However, District Court Judge Fleur Kingham refused to strike out the claim in a decision. In published reasons, Judge Kingham said she wasn’t convinced Mr Bassos had no chance of winning. She ordered him to undergo a medical exam in Brisbane in December. - AAP

Bomber hanged India has executed convicted bomb plotter Yakub Memon for his role in a series of co-ordinated attacks that killed hundreds of people in Mumbai in 1993, local media say. Memon was hanged at Nagpur jail in the western state of Maharashtra in the early hours of yesterday, according to the NDTV and CNN-IBN news channels. Last-ditch pleas for clemency were rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee and the country’s Supreme Court. The blasts killed 257 people in the deadliest attacks ever to hit India. - AFP

16 pilgrims killed A truck has ploughed into a crowd of pilgrims after losing its brakes in central Mexico, killing at least 16 people and injuring 30 others. Some 200 people were taking part in a religious procession on the main street of the town of Mazapil, in Zacatecas state, when the truck ran into them in. The dump truck “was apparently left without brakes and struck the crowd” which was heading to a church, an official in the state’s civil protection agency said. Officials said the truck driver fled the scene of the tragedy. - AFP

Fatal landslide in Nepal At least 16 people have died and dozens more are missing after landslides triggered by heavy rains swept away two villages in quake-hit Nepal. Rescuers are searching through rubble for around 32 people believed missing in the western district of Kaski in the foothills of the Himalayas, around 150 kilometres west of Kathmandu. “At least 16 people are dead in two different landslides in the district due to heavy rainfall last night,” Kaski police chief Kedar Rajaure said yesterday. “The rescue operation is on. We are trying to find missing people.” - AP

Queensland quake Queensland’s southeast has been rocked by an earthquake off the Fraser Coast. Social media went into overdrive just before 10am yesterday, with people saying they felt tremors that shook their houses in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast hinterland. Geoscience Australia confirmed a magnitude 5.3 quake occurred at 9.41am in the Coral Sea, off Hervey Bay, at a depth of 35km. Geoscience Australia says the quake could have been felt by people up to 228km away, and could have caused damage up to 18km away. - AAP

Cop indicted for murder A University of Cincinnati police officer who shot a motorist during a traffic stop over a missing front license plate has been indicted on murder charges and a prosecutor said that the officer “purposely killed him.” Prosecutor Joe Deters announced the grand jury indictment at a news conference to discuss developments in the investigation into the July 19 shooting of 43-year-old motorist Samuel DuBose by Officer Ray Tensing. DuBose’s death comes amid months of national scrutiny of police dealings with AfricanAmericans, especially those killed by officers. - AP

The dairy downturn is not hurting this year’s winner of the RuralCo Supreme Supplier Award. Rob and Karla Newlands, who own Newlands Auto Electric and Powertool Centre, were presented the prestigious trophy for the business’ growth and excellent performance at the recent ATS awards dinner. The third generation Ashburton-based business, formed in 1934, has the capacity to adapt as new technology comes on stream, Mr Newlands said. A branch was opened in Rolleston in 2011 and last year the company acquired Timaru Batteries and the business now employs a team of 30 “loyal staff ” with eight auto electrical technicians onboard. Mr Newlands said the auto electrical business focused on three key areas of service; automotive air conditioning, batteries and two-way radios. The retail side predominate-

ly deals with power tools and workshop equipment. Technology has given rise to vehicles and machinery controlled by central computer systems which operate multiple functions, increasing the workload for Newlands’ staff. This technology has also driven the expansion of the battery aspect of the business. Functions such as reversing cameras, GPS and stop-start technology demand more from batteries. When Mr Newlands started in the business it stocked 30 types of batteries; it now carries well in excess of 100 different varieties. The demand for two-way radios is also on the rise in response to health and safety obligations and patchy cellphone coverage in some areas. Newlands recently picked up the agency for Tait Communications. And all this technology requires servicing. Newlands has been a member

Chinese markets dominate headlines Chinese markets have dominated headlines this week with a massive rout on equity markets dragging prices down across the globe. The Shanghai composite dropped a whopping 11 per cent over three sessions and despite paring back slightly later in the week, the index is still down more than 25 per cent from its June high. The gains made later in the week were generally attributed to buying on behalf of the government which has pledged to support the index in times of volatility. The New Zealand economic calendar has been quiet this week, dominated largely by annual general meetings from market heavyweights such as Mainfreight and Ryman. Next week there is another Global Dairy Trade auction which could put further pressure on our currency should we see another weak outcome. The NZX dairy futures market is pointing to yet another slide in the dairy price and is being impacted by the downturn in the Chinese economy. The futures price for whole milk powder is around US$1500 per tonne at the moment which is half of the level Fonterra needs to see in order to maintain the forecast payout level. The biggest news on the global economic front has been the US Federal Reserve meeting held this week. As was expected the Fed continued to hold rates at record lows.

For some time now Janet Yellen has said that a rate hike is likely to happen this year. This was again the party line with the Fed seeing the US economy and job market continuing to strengthen. The Fed continued to provide no clear guidance of when a rate hike would occur. The US market rose as investors took confidence that this meant rates would remain lower for longer and continue to support equity markets. The US earnings season has also dominated news flows this week with a further 163 S&P500 companies reporting. Of the companies that have reported so far, just over 50 per cent have beaten sales estimates but 76 per cent have beaten earnings estimates. This is in line with what we have come to expect from the previous few quarters as companies continue to implement cost controls and struggle to gain topline growth. Companies of note to report this week included Facebook. Facebook beat quarterly revenue forecasts however, due to high costs, saw earnings fall 9 per cent. Expenses have grown significantly and will continue to do so in the near future as

the company pushes to boost its mobile division and looks at future growth. Facebook will be adding new advertising formats to its current offering including in its subsidiaries Instagram WhatsApp and Oculus. The share price fell 3 per cent in after hours trading following the announcement. BP also reported this week and saw profits slump, dropping to a third of last year’s figure. The result was affected by the US$10.8 billion charge for the 2010 crude oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, an asset write-off in Libya and lower oil prices. BP also announced that it would cut its capital spending programme for the year in a similar move to many of its competitors. Despite the seemingly negative result, the market took it as a positive as cost cutting and reduced capex spending delivered a better than expected result. BP has also maintained its dividend keeping investors happy. Next week look out for results from HSBC, BMW, Toyota and Kellogg among others. Rakaia eyes hat-trick By Erin TaskEr Family ties will be put aside when Methven and Rakaia face off in rugby’s Watters Cup final tomorrow. The captains of the two Mid Canterbury senior rugby finalists are first cousins who are used to playing on the same team, rather than opposing teams. Methven’s captain is Simon Fleetwood, and Rakaia’s is Andrew Letham, whose younger brother Cameron is also in the side. “They get on well off the field, but for 80 minutes tomorrow they’ll be on-field enemies. Rakaia is out to make it a hat-trick of Watters Cup wins, but Methven will be doing all they can to stop them. “We had a good training run on Tuesday night which was quite productive, and we worked pretty hard on our defensive systems,” Fleetwood said. “We will be trying to push up hard and I guess try and shut down Andrew’s (the side’s first-five) space and stopping Seta (Koroimatana) and Nete (Caucau) running too much. “We don’t want to give Seta or Nete any room, but we’ll also be looking to dominate them up front like we did last time.” The last meeting between the two sides in the Watters Cup round robin was won by Methven – their first win

Rugby’s new rules for social media England’s rugby players have been warned not to use Twitter “after a tough defeat” as part of social media guidelines issued by the Rugby Football Union for this year’s World Cup, according to the Telegraph. The 24-point guide also warns Stuart Lancaster’s squad not to react to potentially provocative messages sent by rival players or fans from other teams, insisting that engaging in a public Twitter argument “is a battle you won’t win.” The RFU have already taken the unprecedented move of preventing their players writing newspaper columns or making video diaries.

The Telegraph revealed last September that the instruction came from Lancaster, the England head coach, as part of a move to ensure that the players are not distracted given the extra spotlight they will face during a World Cup on home soil. “Do not post when you are in a bad mood or immediately after a tough loss,” the RFU guidelines state ahead of the tournament, which sees England face a very tough qualifying pool that includes Wales, Fiji and Australia. “Once you’ve posted something online, it can always be tracked back to you. It was yet another win for Ashburton College during the third week of the final round of Premier netball last night. A shaky Hampstead tried, but College just couldn’t be beat the young side taking out the game 38-20. Top-of-the-table equals Methven also had a victory, against United, but Rakaia were denied a win for the third week in a row, going down to Celtic. In Hampstead and Methven’s late game, both teams got off to a solid start. Hampstead scored the first two goals of the match, but College followed with two of their own in quick succession. By the end of the first quarter Challenge Trophy holders College were up by three, the score 10-7. College shone throughout the second quarter, ruling the blue and golds all over the court. Going into half-time the scoreboard read 23-10 in College’s favour. Hampstead appeared tired in the third quarter, only netting two goals. College, on the other hand, kept fighting, bringing the score to 30-12 when the whistle blew. Hampstead perked up in halfway through the last quarter, but it was too little too late, the game finishing up 37-20 to College. In the match between Methven and United, United controlled the game from the first whistle. Methven were slow to start, and United made the most of it pulling away with a 12-9 lead at the end of the first half. Though United tried to hold on, Methven began to claw their way back onto the scoreboard. Within minutes of the final quarter starting Methven were

Adams giving clinic Kiwi NBA basketball star Steven Adams will share his skills, time and knowledge with aspiring young players next month. The Oklahoma City Thunder centre, who this year has overcome various injuries including a broken hand, announced this week he was not available to play for the Tall Blacks against Aussie. Instead, he will travel to Tauranga for a New Zealand Basketball Academy coaching clinic. The 22-year-old would be accompanied by Thunder assistant coaches Mark Bryant and David Bliss, who were keen to check out the level of basketball in New Zealand and see the sights around the country. - NZME

Parker looking ahead American Deontay Wilder, the world champion known as the ‘Bronze Bomber’, is in the sights of Joseph Parker’s team should the New Zealander get past the significant hurdle of Bowie Tupou in Invercargill tomorrow. Wilder, who holds the WBC title, would be Parker’s easiest route to the top, as the other titles are held by southpaw Ruslan Chagaev and the formidable Wladimir Klitschko. Team Parker would be happy to fight 36-yearold Chagaev, as they believe he is nearing the end of his career, but they are wary of the fact Parker has yet to fight a southpaw during his unbeaten professional career. Parker, ranked 8th in the WBO and 10th in the WBA, doesn’t feature on the WBC rankings, but that should change should he beat Tupou at Stadium Southland. - NZME

■ HOCKEY

Battles on the turf about to get serious With only two round to go, Mid Canterbury’s two men’s and women’s senior hockey sides are in line to meet in the semi-finals of their Mid/South Canterbury competitions. Mid Canterbury has two sides in each of the competitions, and with the round robin soon to end the teams are placed first and fourth on their respective points tables.

For the women, Hampstead A should maintain their unbeaten round robin form, which sees them well clear at the top of the table, in the final two rounds, with the bottom two teams – Craighead and Geraldine – their opponents. This week they’ll take on Craighead in Ashburton at 1.30pm. Fourth placed Hampstead/

Collegians also face Craighead as the competition heads into its final stages, along with second-placed Timaru Girls’ High School. Tomorrow’s opponents are Timaru Girls in Timaru. For the men, Wakanui Black continues to lead the way and they’ll face a stern test in Ashburton tomorrow when they take on third placed Cambridge.

Last weekend the Black side just snuck home with a 2-1 win over Timaru Boys’ High School. Wakanui Black and Cambridge will play at the Ashburton turf at 5pm tomorrow. Meanwhile, Wakanui Blue will be looking to add another win to its name when it hosts the last placed Northern Hearts in Ashburton, with that game played at 3pm.

In his past 27 innings - a span stretching back to December 2013 - Australian skipper Michael Clarke has reached 25 just six times. In that same time span, he has made only two half-centuries both times going on to make big hundreds (161no v South Africa in Cap Town in 2014; 128 v India in 2014). Taking out his 128 against India last summer, Clarke has scored 234 runs in his past 15 innings at an average of 19.5. Add the 128 and his past 16 Test innings have produced an average of 27.84. Clarke’s batting average has been in decline ever since his stellar 2012 calendar year, when he scored 1595 runs at 106.33. He will need a score in the second innings at Edgbaston to revive his fortunes, in a test that England appear to have control. - AFP

Steyn joins 400 club Dale Steyn became the second South African bowler to take 400 Test wickets after he dismissed Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal on the opening day of the second Test in Dhaka yesterday. The 32-year-old fast bowler reached his landmark when South African skipper Hashim Amla took a chest-high catch at first slip in Steyn’s third over of the match. Shaun Pollock is the only other South African to pass the 400-mark, taking 421 wickets before retiring in 2008. Steyn, who is playing his 80th Test, became the 13th cricketer to take 400 or more wickets in Test matches. He is one of only three currently active cricketers to achieve the feat, joining India spinner Harbhajan Singh and England paceman James Anderson. - AFP
