Passion for farming put to good use

des was rural co-ordinator of the New Zealand Rural Trust at the time and at the coalface helping farmers forge new lives.

With son Steve making a good career as a commercial airline pilot, Geddes put a manager on the farm; he and Lorraine moved to Tinwald 15 years ago.

Through Federated Farmers, he has been able to put his passion for farming to good use.

Technology and the political landscape around agriculture has changed hugely in 50 years but Geddes says the industry has a sustainable future and Mid Canterbury will remain a big player with its diverse strands.

“This is a great area of flat land with some fertile soils and it is extremely well farmed.

“We don’t have wall-to-wall dairying, you see all farming types cheek by jowl, cereals, sheep, beef, dairy.”

He said people, no matter where they lived, modified their environment and a district once described as barren wasteland was now a high-producing agriculture region.

“I am hugely proud of agriculture and what it has achieved.”

Geddes says farming, like his own vegetable garden in town, is a work in progress and there would always be challenges.

As a Justice of the Peace he served on the bench for 20 years, hearing preliminary evidence in court cases. The phone still rings with people needing official documents signed. He is a past president of the New Zealand Justices Association.

Kevin Geddes was three when his mother died, his grandmother and aunt taking over raising the youngster and his sister. It is part of his DNA to “do stuff” for other people.

Geddes, now 78, has been helping his beloved farming community for decades. He still works three days a week for Federated Farmers, is a Justice of the Peace, is on the Mid Canterbury Rural Support Trust, is active in the Anglican church and was a trustee for 10 years of the Advance Ashburton Community Trust.

Over the years this has translated into a lot of meetings but Geddes believes in giving wholeheartedly to a cause then making way for new blood.

The Ashburton man was humbled to receive a Queen’s Service Medal in the New Year’s Honours and says the gong is also for his wife Lorraine, who has been his long-suffering PA over the years, as well as holding down family and farming life.

The pair met at the Ranfurly Dramatic and Music Society, married in 1962 and farmed the Geddes sheep and beef operation in Maniototo until moving to Carew in 1973. The year before Geddes had spent seven months in the UK as a Nuffield Scholar and came back seeking an alternative to sheep farming.

They put in borderdyke irrigation and set up a dairy unit on the Mid Canterbury property.

New Year’s Eve means different things to different people and around the Ashburton District the way in which people plan to ring in the New Year is varied.

Some are looking to head to popular party spots out of the district while others are happy to see the New Year in closer to home with friends or family.

For some the slide from one year into the next is a low prior-

ity with people saying they hadn’t given the event much thought, while for others it is a great chance for a holiday.

Honoured to be receiving honour

When an envelope arrived in the mail bearing a Crown, Alan Trott thought he might have been invited to host a garden party for the newly appointed GovernorGeneral.

The letter, addressed to Alan George Trott, stamped personal and confidential, arrived in September. Its contents stunned its recipient.

Alan Trott, self taught horticulturalist, had been nominated as a recipient of a Queen’s Service Medal.

“It came like a bolt from the blue; I wondered why me, I was overwhelmed really,” Alan said.

The letter came with a form to complete accepting or declining the nomination. He thought about it for a couple of days, looked at the downsides and upsides of accepting and decided, why not.

Like all nominees he had no idea who had put his name forward.

“I’ve questioned a few, thought we knew who it was but now we’re not sure,” he said.

His honour is for services to horticulture and when he reflects on what it represents, Alan said he’s humbled that as a man whose knowledge and skill came from hard graft, he was considered worthy of recognition.

Today he and wife Catherine live on a four hectare paradise amidst carefully sculpted gardens, towering trees and immaculately cared for lawns. Step back almost 40 years, however, and the property was a barren, windswept paddock with an old house and a falling down stable.

Alan and Catherine may not have had any horticultural training but they shared a vision. Between those early years and today lies endless hard work and sacrifice.

At times the going was incredibly tough, Alan said, but the dream of creating a large garden remained.

Over the years he remained faithful to his original plan, braving the condemnation of so-called experts who said it could never be done.

In creating a world class garden from a bare paddock Alan said he was not alone in being self taught.

He shares this natural talent with some of the world’s most widely recognised plantsmen and women.

“You don’t go to university to learn to garden, it’s done with time. I’m certainly not an academic. I am more interested in the de-

sign of a garden and how it ticks.”

Over the years Trott’s Garden has been recognised as a garden of international significance, Alan has written and taken photographs for two books that are sold internationally, has written for newspapers and still writes for international magazines and for two years was president of the New Zealand Rhododendron Society.

The journey from bare paddock to a garden that receives thousands of visitors each year has been a long one, but one he could not have travelled alone, Alan said.

“If it wasn’t for Catherine who has supported me, this could never have been; it’s taken the two of us to make this happen.”

He might still be a little uncomfortable about receiving an honour, but if what he’s achieved inspires just one person to grow a garden or to plant a tree, then it will be worthwhile, he said.

“I’ve had a dream, a vision, that I was committed to and I’ve now fulfilled it.”

Looking to the future, Alan and Catherine are not planning new gardening ventures; they’re con-

tented to be caretaking their magical place. And the future?

“A garden is only one person’s dream. Gardens often don’t survive without the passion of the owner – but let’s not worry about that yet,” Alan said.

The couple have had to keep the new year honour a secret for several weeks and that hasn’t been easy, but once the investiture is over, the medal might find it’s life is in a draw rather than on show, he said.

Life, art lessons learned in prison “I don’t think I would be the person I am today if I didn’t have a past,” says Ashburton artist Peter Green.

The dad of three is originally from Whanganui, and had a rough childhood which led into youth offending. As soon as he was old enough to be in the prison system, that’s where he went, at the age of 16. He was in and out of jail throughout his young adult years, but hasn’t been back since 2005.

Today, aged in his 40s, he looks back on his offending past, which he says was mainly aggravated robberies, in a philosophical way.

“I don’t do that anymore, it’s not worth it,” he said.

He had been able to get some good out of the bad, and improve his future while in jail. He learned Te Reo, and about his Maori heritage, for the first time in his life. It gave him something to be proud of.

He also learned to sculpt and carve stone, and today is a recognised artist in the art form.

Green has lived in Mid Canterbury for 11 years, and began sculpting Oamaru sandstone around 2010 following working as a tractor driver. A car accident 10 years ago had resulted in injuries

from which he suffered long-term consequences, and sculpting was something he could do part-time.

He has sold pieces in shops and at markets throughout the South Island, and today mainly undertakes commission work and teaches. He is currently preparing for his second Methven Summer School.

He initially sculpts the shape out with tools then embellishes them with carvings.

His largest work is 1.5 metres high and was done for Kaipoi North School. He carves headstones and has two in the Methven Cemetery, one in Ashburton and a couple in the North Island. He also has one of his sculptures at Community House in Ashburton.

“For me to utilise what I learned in there and put it out here, it took me a long time how to figure out how to do it properly,” Green said.

Making it on the outside was influenced by how much support former prisoners received from their partners, family, friends and mentors.

“You have kids and you start to think about things. It took me a long time to figure it out, that I was no good to anybody in there let alone myself. I think I just got sick of it, and I just had enough.”

pon hearing the term Auckland Islands you could be forgiven for conjuring up a mental image of latte drinkers headed out for a day trip to Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf.

In reality, the archipelago lies over 450km to the south of the South Island, battered by the winds of the “furious fifties”.

Its inhabitants include hoiho (yellow-eyed) penguins and New

Zealand sealions, and there is not a barista in sight. The islands have a

fascinating human history, however, mired in commerce, shipwrecks, and dashed dreams.

Much of that history centres on the north of the Auckland Island itself and the short-lived settlement of Hardwicke.

It takes a sharp pair of eyes to spot the former town, as tangled rata comb the rocky foreshore into a tousled fringe.

Cruising along the shoreline, it is

the thickets of flax that give away the location – when Ngati Mutunga people travelled to the island via the Chatham Islands in 1835, they also brought seeds of the tough fibrous plant. These days, the long spears of flax, a carved message to castaways, and a small graveyard are all that remain.

Once ashore, a narrow path leads into the forested gloom. The smell of damp earth rises to the canopy

and the shade is punctuated only by occasional shafts of sun that filter through, thin and bedraggled.

They land upon tangled roots, jumbled cairns of mossed-over bricks, and the odd patch of flattened earth where dwellings once huddled, backs to the sea.

The bricks, strewn alongside the overgrown “main road”, date back to the former settlement of Hardwicke.

of Auckland Island In late 1849, whaling magnate Enderby sent over 200 settlers to Auckland Island, with the aim of setting up a whaling station.

Thanks to poor soil quality, impenetrable scrub and mutinous whaling crews, the settlement lasted less than three years. The original Maori settlers did not last much longer – in the face of harsh conditions, they abandoned the island in 1856.

Our visit, too, is fleeting – four

hours ashore. Yet 150 years on, memories still linger. The graveyard, located some 10 minutes inland, along a thin winding trail, is a weathered memorial to the hardships of the south.

The wind whistles through the treetops as it swoops through the gully, providing a soulful soundtrack for the graves that commemorate a perished infant and shipwrecked sailors.

Such sailors were the intended audience for the so-called Victoria tree, which was carved with a message to castaways. The text, which reads “H.M.C.S. VICTORIA NORMAN IN SEARCH OF SHIPWRECKED PEOPLE OCT 13TH 1865” is a reminder of how treacherous the surrounding seas – and the towering cliffs on the western side of the island – can be.

Those castaways who were lucky

found well-stocked emergency depots – replenished by ships like the Victoria on regular sweeps in search of castaways. Those who were unlucky had to fend for themselves and make the most of the pigs and goats that were released for future castaways as insurance against starvation.

These days the Auckland Islands are designated as a Unesco world heritage site, along with New Zea-

land’s other sub-Antarctic islands, and are administered by the Department of Conservation.

Introduced mammals are frowned upon and no-one calls the islands “home”, but a handful of cruise ships visit the region each summer. Still, the chilling thought of being left behind is enough to send anyone running for a latte – and a further dose of New Zealand history – once back on board.

Underdogs have their day As the curtain on 2016 starts to edge towards the middle, it’s the perfect opportunity for some reflection.

In sport we love the story of the underdog or the little unknown succeeding on the biggest stage.

So, to farewell the sporting year, Matt Markham lists five of his favourite underdog stories, in no particular order, from 2016.

Liam Malone Liam Malone – The Kiwi Blade Runner “I’m not talented, I’m just a guy who runs around in circles.”

Well, Mr Liam Malone, we have some news for you. You are talented, incredibly so in fact.

Prior to the Rio Paralympics most of New Zealand could have been forgiven for having not the foggiest who this kid from Nelson was.

But come the end of his incredible performances at Rio he had garnered himself a pretty healthy looking squad of followers – thanks in large to his talents on the track and quick wit in front of the camera.

From the depths of absolutely nowhere he claimed two gold medals in the men’s 200 and 400m T44 and also claimed silver in the Men’s 100m T44.

A true blue Kiwi champion.

Buller Cricket – The Hawke Hunters 106 years is a long time.

So, when you’ve waited that long for an opportunity, you are definitely not going to let it slip to the wayside.

And that’s exactly what the Buller senior representative side did when they finally got a crack at cricket’s Hawke Cup. In a fairytale story that captured the attention of the nation they downed the might of Canterbury Country and did so after being rolled for 120 in their first innings.

The heart, passion and pure determination came through though in a typical Coaster sort of fashion and they pulled off the victory, much to the delight of their supporters.

“I’m completely lost for words.

I dreamed, and the rest of the guys dreamed, that we’d win the Hawke Cup. “We come from a small town, four club teams …. 25 adult players …. nothing could describe this to be honest,” Troy Scanlon said after the match.

Anton Lienert-Brown – The Midfield Magician I first spotted Anton LienertBrown running riot on a St Bede’s backline while playing for Christchurch Boys’ High School in 2012.

Even then he had that bit of x-factor about him that draws Super Rugby coaches towards players. On a field of talented players, he stood tall and shone the brightest.

“I just love playing rugby and want to take it as far as I can,” he said after that match in which his side became the Press Cup champions of that year.

Ashburton bowler Benny Hill has qualified for the knockout stage of the National Singles at the New Zealand Bowls National Championships in New Plymouth. Hill, who plays out of the Hampstead club, lost his first game, but picked up the required three wins in the following three matches to qualify for the business end of the competition. Neil Atkinson managed one win from his four games. Atkinson and Hill combined yesterday in the pairs qualifying but were bundled out of the competition when they lost their first two matches.

What was in the bag?

The row over a bag of drugs delivered to cycling superstar Bradley Wiggins deepened yesterday.

Bob Howden, head of British Cycling, failed seven times to provide an answer when asked what was in the bag couriered to the cyclist during a race in France in 2011.

And rather than quell suspicions, Mr Howden refused to disclose during a BBC Radio 4 interview whether evidence existed to support Team Sky principal David Brailsford’s insistence that the package contained fluimucil – a the legal over-the-counter decongestant.

Questions have been raised as to why the medicine would be sent on a two-day trip from Manchester to the French Alps when Sir Bradley could simply have bought it from a local pharmacy instead.

Despite being asked at least six times about the issue, Mr Howden insisted he is prevented

‘If it’s as simple as that, why get a British Cycling coach to courier it from Manchester via London to Geneva when you could have just gone to a pharmacy in France and bought it over the counter?

‘And that’s why, I think, for a lot of people looking at this, it just looks odd.

‘It doesn’t look quite right. So can you just reassure us you’ve got the records and you know that it was all above board?’

Sir Bradley – the country’s most famous and decorated cyclist – announced his retirement from the sport on Wednesday.

Fellow British cyclists Sir Chris Hoy, Chris Froome and Mark Cavendish all failed to react to the news via Twitter.

Record against star mare

By Michael Guerin Dream About Me has one glaring weakness heading into tonight’s $250,000 Auckland Cup – her sex.

The exceptional four-year-old has been the long-time favourite for the great race, even though a second-line draw could see her lose that mantle to stablemate Titan Banner on the tote tonight.

Trainer-driver Mark Purdon isn’t overly worried by her draw, suggesting the fact Dream About Me is following out good beginners negates the damage.

That aside, she has the breeding, the group one record, the track stats, the x-factor and is in the perfect stable to win an Auckland Cup. However, while she may be on the way to becoming a champion mare, that last part should be reason for concern, because mares have a worse record in the Auckland Cup that just about any other major race in this country.

The last mare to win the Cup was Flight South in 2000 and she paid $108, while the only other girl to grab the gold in the past 33 years is Kate’s First.

Some exceptional mares have tried and failed in that time, including New Zealand Cup winners Adore Me, Mainland Banner and Kym’s Girl.

Add to that the fact Dream About Me is still only four, has had only one serious open class start for a luckless sixth in the NZ Free-For-All and she has that

pesky second-line draw and she starts to look a false favourite, or, at least, too short.

She is a special mare who has run some sensational times and Purdon has openly compared her to Adore Me, but she might need to be every bit as good as her close relation to win this evening.

So while she has spent most of the week around the $2.20 quote, punters will want $2.80 or even $3 to be getting real value and that probably won’t turn up, especially with the strong Australian co-mingling as Dream About Me is unbeaten there.

Aiding her chances of ending the girl-power drought is the fact this is hardly a deep Auckland Cup, with plenty of very good horses but not many great ones, the obvious exception being Dream About Me’s older halfbrother Christen Me. He has nothing left to prove in his awesome career, which is just as well because he looks a twoor three-length inferior horse to what he was when he won this race two seasons ago.

Others like Hughie Green, Hug The Wind, Tara Tiger, obviously Chase The Dream and even No Doctor Needed have shown enough to suggest they have blowout hopes but the horses who ticks almost all the boxes for tonight is Titan Banner.

mer and Franklin Cups and was a brave third in Lazarus’s New Zealand Cup last month.

Titan Banner looks to be in the zone, happy and healthy, has good standing start manners and is a natural stayer.

If he can get to the front without having to do anything silly, it is going to take a huge performance to run him down.

While standing start manners and luck in the running always have a role to play in 3200m cups, the markets and recent wins suggest those factors won’t be as im-

portant in tonight’s other huge races.

Ultimate Machete seems to have too much physical strength for his rivals in the $200,000 Sales Series Pace but is so short he is really only of use as a multi anchor.

The same could be said for Spanish Armada in the Sires’ Stakes Fillies Champs, although the best version of Delightful Memphis can always test her.

And anybody who saw Marcoola put nearly 12 lengths on his rivals at Cambridge last Saturday will be reluctant to back against him in the $80,000 National Trot.

The tactics of his trainer-driver Clint Ford will be interesting as he probably can’t risk going forward hard at the start so may have to settle before looping the field in the middle stages.

If he can do that and wrest the front he looks home, if he has to sit parked then being a four-yearold over 2700m mobile he could be slightly vulnerable, with Bordeaux and Quite A Moment having the stamina to suggest they could upset if the favourite has a tough night at the office.

Auckland Cup twilight Best bet: Gupta’s Cullen (R4, No 6): Comes out of similar race last start so should win again.

Improver: Spankem (R1, No 7): Had interrupted prep before brave debut second in same field.

Derby bound: Vincent (R2, No 7): Off to the Victoria Derby and handled standing start well when winning last time.

“It’s taken Les and I 45 years to be an overnight success!” she said. “For us it would be our first black type result. We’ve shared moments of great success through the family farm at Ardsley and we were there for 25 years, but this is a big deal for us.”

Those “shared” moments while

involved with the Wallace family’s Ardsley Stud in the Wairarapa range from the likes of Gr.1 Australian Cup winner Kip through to Gr.1 Auckland Cup winner Titch, bred and raced by Jim Wallace snr.

What delights Wallace about the race is that she and Les will

be sharing the experience of having a runner in a stakes race with a diverse group – the 38-strong Galloping Wekas syndicate.

There would also be a certain symmetry should Skyweka win the Rich Hill Mile as she is a daughter of Rich Hill Stud’s flagship stallion Pentire.

Patel back in favour

BY ANDREW ALDERSON The international surprises keep coming for Jeetan Patel this year.

Once seemingly destined to play out his career at Wellington and English county Warwickshire, the 36-year-old has had two call-ups for New Zealand in the space of three months.

He will join – and presumably play for – the Black Caps in the final one-day international against Bangladesh on New Year’s Eve. Patel was also selected for the final two tests of the Indian series in October.

The idea is with Bangladesh’s top five comprising three lefthanders, Patel will turn the ball away from them on a wearing Saxton Oval pitch.

The decision was expedited by

captain Kane Williamson’s success taking three for 22 from five overs with his off spin.

That spell effectively turned the game and the series.

He also dismissed the world’s No.1 ODI all-rounder – and lefthander – Shakib Al Hasan, albeit with a shorter delivery that found Neil Broom’s hands at short third man but could just as easily have hit the boundary hoardings.

Coach Mike Hesson said Patel’s call-up was a product of the environment.

“With the slow nature of the Saxton Oval surface, and the number of left-handers in the Bangladesh line-up, we feel Jeetan will be a good option.

Patel will join the side today after completed a convoluted flight plan from Hamilton where

He has taken six wickets at an

average of 38, strike rate of 30 and economy rate of 7.51 in the McDonald’s T20 Super Smash this season.

Patel excelled in the Royal London One-Day Cup in England taking 22 wickets to be second on the charts.

He averaged 20.31 from 10 matches with a strike rate of 25 and economy rate of 4.84.

Notably, he took two for 28 from nine overs to see his Warwickshire side crowned champions in the tournament final against Surrey.

Tim Southee could see the selection logic.

Finding that magic sporting moment T

his is the time of year when you look back and try and decide, out of a mass of quality contenders, which was the best sporting moment of the year.

With the Olympics dominating the landscape, and the likes of Bond and Murray, Mahe Drysdale, Lisa Carrington and Peter Burling and Blair Tuke mining the gold (why is all our good stuff on the water?) you might think the most memorable moment would come from there, but perhaps there were so many contenders cluttering up the podiums it all became a blur of excellence.

So I’ll go to Chicago.

November 6 was a day that revitalised and rejuvenated rugby around the world.

The mighty All Blacks, for a couple of years a juggernaut rolling inexorably into the history books, fell to an utterly commit-

ted, determined and adventurous Irish side, and in the process lost a world record winning run.

Unfortunately it opened the door for England to take that title as well, but that’s another story.

Post-Chicago suddenly the newspapers, television and social media were again filled with rugby-oriented stories; the All Blacks were human after all, and every team in the world were planning their own victory over the now-humbled men in black.

Never mind that the All Blacks could easily have won that match, with just one dropped pass making the difference.

Never mind that the All Blacks were at the tail end of a massive season, and many of the players were almost out on their feet with exhaustion.

He has accused the nations involved of a “gang up” at the UN. President Barack Obama and his Secretary of State John Kerry had four years to drive progress on a two State solution to enable a Palestinian State to co-exist alongside Israel. They failed.

Yet, with just a month to go before Obama hands over power to Donald Trump it decided to hide behind NZ’s diplomatic skirts instead of proposing the resolution condemning the West Bank settlements itself and voting in its favour.

It’s not surprising that Netanyahu and Trump are now hyperventilating about the Security Council’s action.

It was a long shot by McCully.

New Zealand has made no direct political gains from this action. Its reputation will be enhanced in some quarters.

It may also have been consistent with New Zealand policy on the dispute but the real issue is timing.

The Obama Administration, McCully, and the 12 other Security Council members who endorsed it, clearly believe this resolution boxes Israel (and also the Trump Administration) into a corner and puts it onto the two state track.

The question is does this move also put New Zealand offside with incoming Trump Administration?

From a principled standpoint it should not matter.

But this is politics.

From 2012 to 2015, overall annual arts revenue increased from $71.37 million to $98.42 million.

Annual revenue from philanthropic and sponsorship sources rose by $4.48 million from $13.41 million to $17.89 million – an increase of more than 33 per cent.

The private sector accounts for a total 17 per cent of all sponsorship and philanthropic funding in the arts sector.

Creative New Zealand senior manager of arts policy, capability and international, Cath Cardiff, says the industry had started to see a new group of investors coming forward.

“For a while it seemed [the industry] was going through a bit of a dip ... but we’re certainly noticing there are some interesting new players who are finding it worth their while.”

Ockham Residential is among this new wave of investors.

The Auckland-based property developer has been a sponsor of

the New Zealand Book Awards for the second year in a row, and hopes to do so indefinitely.

Fast food franchise Hell Pizza also sponsors the Book Awards.

Co-founder and director of Ockham Residential, Mark Todd, said the firm jumped at the opportunity to take over sponsorship from New Zealand Post.

“I was alerted to the fact that the New Zealand Book Awards had lost their sponsor, and so we actively sought it out as we knew they were in the position,” he said.

“Me and my business partner, Benjamin Preston, have a strong interest in education.

“Reading is a core aspect of education and writers’ creativity and independent thoughts are another key thing we believe in – it’s healthy for society to have questions, debate, contemplation and written reflection.”

People relate to businesses that they can see are doing good in the community. “[Being involved in something outside business] helps relieve the narrow-minded focus that you can often get ... when you’re just a strictly commercial business,” he said.

“Even if I was a total cynic I would still do it because it’s really good for your business profile and credibility; and hence its ability to trade profitably and trade well.”

Art sponsorship big business Corporate presence within the arts and creative industries is no coincidence.

The multimillion-dollar industry is supported by the likes of ASB, Westpac, Vodafone, Allpress Espresso, Ockham Residential, among others.

The most recent – and biggest – example of business sponsorship of the arts can be seen with the opening of Auckland’s ASB Waterfront Theatre.

On day one of the September opening, the $36 million theatre had been entirely paid off.

Gordon Moller, theatre chairman and an architect on the project with BVN of Australia, said Auckland Council had contributed $10 million, ASB $5 million, Foundation North $5 million, AUT $5 million, the Lion Foundation $1 million and Creative New Zealand with Lotto $5 million together.

But he said a long list of others, including many individuals, had been tremendously generous in contributing the money to enable the venture to be so successful and fully paid off.

Sponsorship of the arts has evolved over the last 15 years, says Richard Howarth, general manager of sponsorship coaching firm Gemba New Zealand.

“If we think back to 20 or 25 years ago, sponsorship was primarily used as a way of communicating brands – it was logos and slapping brands on things – but what we’re finding now is businesses have become a lot more savvy and smart; they’ve figured out they can use sponsorship in a number of ways – for more than just brand awareness.”

Sponsorship offers a number of opportunities: positioning a brand, rewarding customers, creating credibility, advertising, feelgood factors, and both tangible and intangible gains.

It’s built on the basis of aligning brands and audiences, he says.

“Sponsorship is the most powerful and emotional form of

It is fundamentally absurd to believe Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to declare war on New Zealand in retaliation for co-sponsoring the successful UN resolution against Israel.

Netanyahu has far bigger fish to fry than New Zealand.

In fact, he has considerable respect for this country having based the economic reforms he launched when Israel’s Finance Minister on Sir Roger Douglas’s economic policies.

“Sir Roger has bold ideas.

“He really gets down to the bone. To the core of it,” he told me in Israel a decade ago.

What is at issue now is the controversial report citing two un-

named Western diplomats that said Netanyahu had phoned Foreign Minister Murray McCully and asked him to neither support the resolution nor to promote it.

“If you continue to promote this resolution from our point of view it will be a declaration of war.

“It will rupture the relations and there will be consequences,” the Israeli prime minister is reported to have said to McCully.

Some have misread the reported comments and interpreted them in an overly literal fashion suggesting Israel has declared war on NZ. Obviously it hasn’t and won’t.

A

s 2016 draws to a close it is timely to reflect on how badly the pundits got it wrong on a number of fronts.

Twelve months ago no one foresaw Donald Trump would be on the verge of being sworn in as the next president of the United States.

Trump was a reality TV star and somewhat of a joke – not only did it seem unlikely he would rise to fame on a political platform, it appeared downright impossible.

But even before Trump the UK broke up with the European Union, coining a new word in the process. This time last year Brexit was not even “a thing” – now we are all completely au fait with the term.

The fact that commentators failed to forecast either of these momentous events left us stunned.

In the flurry which followed the same people were quick off the mark with predictions of economic chaos.

So far they’ve been also been wrong.

The UK growth rate has yet to collapse, the stock market soon returned to pre-Brexit levels and there has been no significant impact on the global economy.

And aside from some glaring political gaffs, the Trump government looks set to sail in a strong economic comment.

Of course we have yet to see how the man will fare once he’s in the big chair, but one thing we can accurately predict is that he will provide hampers full of fodder for lampoonists and satirists for the next four years.

John Key’s resignation also came as a shock. Less than a month ago we looked set to head into 2017 with Key at the helm of the National Party preparing to contest the forthcoming elections. That was not to be; instead we have Prime Minister Bill English to lead us into the New Year.

If we’ve learned anything from the failure of punditry to prepare us for such events it would have to be that human nature is basically unpredictable.

Kremlin vows retaliation The Kremlin has issued a stark warning to the United States, saying it would respond in kind to the US expulsion of 35 Russian diplomats and other sanctions following the Russian hacking of US political parties before the 2016 presidential elections.

“I cannot say now what the response will be, although, as we know, there is no alternative here to the principle of reciprocity,” said Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov in a statement yesterday reported by the Interfax news service.

He said that Russian President Vladimir Putin would decide the exact response.

Peskov’s remarks were the culmination of a sharplyworded reaction by Russia’s establishment to the sanctions, which come at a time when Moscow is looking forward to an improvement in its ties with the US at the start of the Trump administration in three weeks.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, whose comments about President Barack Obama’s administration have grown increasingly hostile as the relationship has soured, dismissed the White House as “a group of foreign policy losers, angry and ignorant”.

Zakharova’s colleague in the foreign ministry, Konstantin Dolgov, who holds the title of commissioner on democracy and human rights, called the US sanctions “counterproductive” and cast them as having “the goal of damaging rela-

Whatever retaliation Moscow is considering will have to take into account the possibility that the Trump administration will want to restore the relationship that has foundered on differences over Syria, Russia’s annexation of Crimea, the Kremlin’s proxy war in Ukraine, and finally, the alleged hacking of on behalf of Trump in the US presidential campaign.

Peskov told reporters yesterday that the steps showed President Obama’s “unpredictable and aggressive foreign policy”: “Such steps of the US administration that has three weeks left to work are aimed at two things: to further harm Russian-American ties, which are at a low point as it is, as well as, obviously, deal a blow

Konstantin Kosachyov, a senior member of the upper house of the Russian parliament, suggested that Moscow will have to weigh its response given the possible reaction of the newly elected president.

The sanctions, he said in comments carried by Interfax, represented not the will of the United States as a whole, but “the agony of political corpses of the outgoing administration”.

That said, the history of diplomatic expulsions suggest that, at the very least, Russia will throw out a similar number of US embassy personnel.

Zakharova and others have long warned of an “asymmetrical” response to any possible sanctions over the hacking al-

legations, so other expulsions are possible.

Putin repeatedly denied Russian involvement in the US election despite the accusations from the White House, and the Kremlin has questioned the evidence for the claims.

In his nationally broadcast marathon news conference last week, Putin borrowed some of President-elect Donald Trump’s dismissive rhetoric, remarking about the hacking that “Maybe it was someone lying on the couch who did it”.

The Democratic Party, Putin said, is “losing on all fronts and looking elsewhere for things to blame.

“In my view, this, how shall I say it, degrades their own dignity. You have to know how to lose with dignity.”

Security ramped up at Times Square Massive 20-ton rubbish trucks, weighted with an extra 15 tons of sand, will surround the iconic New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square, officials said yesterday, describing a security measure meant to stop deadly truck-driving attacks into crowds like those in Germany and France.

The placement of the 65 trucks, along with 100 patrol cars, at intersections surrounding Times Square is a new element to an already heavily policed event that will include 7000 officers, specially armed counter-terrorism units and bomb-sniffing dogs.

“We live in a changing world now,” New York Police Department Commissioner James O’Neil said.

“It can’t just be, ‘What happens in New York, what happens in the United States?’ It has to be more, ‘What happens worldwide?’”

mas market in Berlin this month killed 12 people and injured 56 others.

His attack followed a more deadly assault in Nice, France, in July that left 86 people dead when a man drove a 20-ton refrigerated truck into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day. New York police studied those events in planning their Times Square security.

“As we formulated this year’s plan, we paid close attention to world events and we learned from those events,” said Carlos Gomez, the NYPD’s chief of patrol.

More than 1 million people are expected to attend the annual ball drop countdown in Manhattan, and officials said they didn’t know of any terror threats.

The security measures are part of augmented precautions across the nation for New Year’s Eve. To keep Las Vegas’ lavish celebration secure, the entire

Times Square police force will be working or on-call with help from the FBI, the National Guard and the Secret Service and will close roads and beef up barriers to prevent vehicle attacks.

Times Square revellers, who are prohibited from carrying umbrellas and large bags, will be screened at two points:

once when they approach the Crossroads of the World and again when they enter one of the 65 pens that hold thousands of people each.

And, as in past years, officials have removed all trash bins and mailboxes, sealed manhole covers and done sweeps of parking garages and hotels.

Police in New York have used trucks as blocker vehicles before, though never on this scale.

The sand-filled trucks were deployed in November at the Thanksgiving Day parade and on Election Day, when they were posted outside Donald Trump’s Trump Tower, at two Manhattan hotels and at a convention centre used by Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Investigators also are reviewing the records of truck rental companies, said James Waters, chief of the NYPD’s counterterrorism bureau.

Tribute to George Michael Chris Martin paid his tribute to George Michael - who was famously charitable by surprising a group of homeless people with a performance of Wham!’s Last Christmas. The 39-year-old stunned the group of homeless people, volunteers and staff at a Crisis shelter in west London. He performed some of his own hits as well as the popular Christmas single. During the show, he dedicated it to George Michael.

American TV star Emmy Rossum has been spotted in Rotorua. The American actress and singer-songwriter posted a photo of Rotorua’s Fat Dog cafe yesterday as well as photos of her at Lake Tarawera on her Instagram account. Fat Dog owner Simon Wright said he and his staff hadn’t noticed The Phantom of the Opera star come in. “I don’t know who she is, I wouldn’t know who has been in or out, we have just been way too busy,” he said. Mr Wright said he thought it was “really cool” that she shared a photo of Fat Dog on her account. Rossums’s Instgram has more than 1.6m followers and almost 3000 posts.
