Chris Rock has filed for divorce from his wife Malaak Compton-Rock. A statement from his representative confirmed yesterday that Rock and his family request privacy as they go through this process because it is a personal matter. Comedian Chris Rock and philanthropist Malaak Compton-Rock had been married for 19 years and have two daughters, Lola Simone, 12, and Zahra Savannah, 10.

Wolf tops illegal downloads Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street and Disney’s animated fantasy hit Frozen were the two most pirated films of 2014, according to a firm tracking illegal downloads.

Numerous US media, including Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, yesterday published a list of this year’s 20 most illegally downloaded movies, compiled by piracy tracker Excipio. The firm tallied “torrent” downloads, where computer users illegally share movies and other media over the internet, for the period from January 1 to December 23, according to Variety. Excipio said The Wolf of Wall Street was illegally downloaded more than 30 million times, while Frozen was pirated more than 29.9 million times.

In third place was RoboCop, with a little less than 29.9 million illegal downloads, though this included both 2014’s rebooted version and the 1987 original. Space drama Gravity, directed

by Mexico’s Alfonso Cuaron, was downloaded just under 29.4 million times.

The Oregon cat accidentally sold with a mattress set is home after 10 days on his own. Roy Dufek wrote in a statement that his girlfriend, Hayley Crews, caught Camo in a trap Saturday night after he was reportedly seen near the Hillsboro Airport west of Portland. The trap was baited with sardines in oil and familiar scented clothing.

People across the Portland area and beyond had been on the look-out for Camo after his unusual disappearance got national attention. Dufek sold his girlfriend’s mattress set December 17 without realising the cat was likely in a favourite hiding spot: the box spring.

Mallard marries journo Stalwart Labour MP Trevor Mallard married journalist Jane Clifton in an intimate and sunny ceremony in Wellington yesterday.

The couple exchanged vows at Mr Mallard’s Wainuiomata home in front of family members and close friends. Mr Mallard wore a dark suit over a white shirt. The bride, who is a columnist for the Listener magazine, wore a long gown with a soft white shawl. The ceremony was held outside in a marquee decorated with colourful bunting. David Clark, the Labour MP for Dunedin North, was the celebrant.

Among the guests were Sir Robert Jones, former Act MP Deborah Coddington, Labour MPs Grant Robertson, Chris Hipkins and Jacinda Ardern, and CTU president Helen Kelly. Former National Deputy Prime Minister Sir Don McKinnon gave Jane Clifton away. Among those who made speeches were Ms Ardern, political scientist Jon Johansson and former Prime Minister Helen Clark.

Fire-breathing stage show A fire-breathing stage stole the show as the three-day Rhythm and Vines music festival kicked off Monday night. About 17,000 people attended the opening night. They were wowed by the Arcadia Afterburner stage, which travelled to Gisborne from Bristol in the UK. “It’s something New Zealand has never seen before,” said Rhythm Group sales director Torben Landl.

Launched in Glastonbury in 2008, the stage has visited festivals such as T in the Park and Electric Picnic. Made almost entirely of recycled parts, the impressive stage comes to life at night when fire and smoke explode from it, and strobes and beams dance in time to the music. “It is a 360-degree experience. It is made so people can get up there and dance,” said Arcadia building operations manager Andy Parrini. “It is a totally different experience ... I think every festival needs something like that ... but they don’t know until they get it.”

Extra police rostered on By erin tasker

Extra police staff will be on the beat around Mid Canterbury tonight, but they’re not expecting big trouble.

Tonight is New Year’s Eve but with no major, official planned events thought to be planned around the district, police are hoping those who do get together to ring in the new year, do so sensibly.

Ashburton Police senior sergeant Scott Banfield said extra staff were rostered on around Mid Canterbury just in case

though, including up at the Ashburton Lakes – an area where there has been trouble in recent years.

“We’re certainly not expecting any problems because traditionally people from Mid Canterbury seem to get out of the district,” Mr Banfield said.

“There was some concern about up at the lakes but this year there’s no public function.”

It’s the second year there will be no public function at the lakes. New Year celebrations were cancelled and security beefed up at Lake Clearwater

last New Year’s Eve, following a year where hundreds of young people converged. During the Lake Clearwater Hut Holders’ traditional New Year’s Eve disco, a large number of intoxicated youth went on a rampage, lighting fires, burning a car, littering and fighting.

Cars were also driven at speeds of up to 120km/h in 50km/h areas and a number of arrests were made as police from Timaru descended on the holiday spot, and found themselves pelted by bottles.

In a complete turnaround, 2014 was rung in in a largely positive manner.

Police said a combination of wet weather and an increased police presence, along with the cancellation of the lakes event, all contributed to a successful New Year’s Eve. Wet weather is again forecast for Mid Canterbury today. According to the MetService Mid Canterbury will hit a high of 28 degrees but have periods of afternoon rain, with a strong north-east wind changing to north-west.

Back at Mt Somers Holiday Park for 14th year

Tenting is a popular Kiwi pastime and more and more Mid Cantabrians are finding their perfect camping spot closer to home.

Mt Somers Holiday Park owners Lawrence and Mandy Gordon said they have many regular holidaymakers staying with them from around Mid Canterbury over the Christmas and New Year period.

Leanne and Dennis Mably, along with Jane and Royce Worsfold, of Ashburton, have been spending their New Year’s holiday at the park for 14 years.

“It’s a great place for relaxing and not too far from home,” Mr Mably said.

“And it’s clean and tidy, great facilities,” said Mrs Worsfold.

The two couples, along with another family, started bringing their kids to the holiday park and kept returning, year after year.

The kids moved on and now had their own plans for New Year, said Mrs Mably but they still came back to visit.

Police have released the above security camera footage of a person they’d like to speak to in relation to an assault in Ashburton earlier this month. The assault took place in the town centre in the early hours of December 14, but police are keeping tight-lipped about the nature of the assault.

Ashburton Police acting detective sergeant Leigh Jenkins said the incident occurred next to the pedestrian crossing on the corner of Tancred Street and East Street about 2.30am. “We would like to hear from anyone who was in the area of the pedestrian crossing and may have seen the incident.”

Car crashes into river A car that plunged about six metres from the Wanganui River bridge at Hari Hari in Westland yesterday afternoon was found last night wedged under a stump in the river. However, it is still unknown how many people may have been in the vehicle, believed by witnesses to be a rental car, when it crashed through the railing on the upstream side of the bridge, a few metres from the northern approach, about 4.20pm. - NZME

local people return to her and her husband’s holiday park because it is not too far away.

“It’s only 30 minutes from Ashburton and Geraldine … an hour from Christchurch.”

There are a lot of activities in the area for campers to enjoy,

said Mrs Gordon, like boating, walking, visiting the lakes and fishing.

This holiday period the holiday park is booked up, with all 28 powered and unpowered sites booked, as well as all eight cabins.

Mrs Gordon said because camping was such a popular pastime for so many people, the key was to book in early.

Many regulars book the same site again for the following year when they go to check out, she said.

The intended recipient of a letter addressed only to “Granny” has been found, ending a mystery which has confounded Karitane since before Christmas. “Granny” is Warrington woman Lynley Beard, 70, who was surprised to find a picture of her daughter’s family on the front page of the Otago Daily Times yesterday. “I went to buy a newspaper ... and got a big surprise when I saw the [story] on the front page,” Ms Beard said.

If you’re looking for a place to party tonight in the Ashburton District, your options are limited.

In Ashburton it’s the clubs rather than pubs that will be providing the entertainment, with Methven’s Blue and Brown pubs providing out of town choice.

Both will be gearing up for a

big night with DJs, giveaways and the opportunity to party into the small hours.

Over the past three or four years, the Ashburton MSA has become the most popular spot in town, attracting large crowds onto the dance floor. And this year is likely to be exactly the same, said MSA manager Simon McDonnell with local entertainers Les Donaldson and Liam Kennedy-Clark, playing

from 8pm to 1am.

“It’s always a big night for us and going by the last two or three years, the place fills up pretty quickly and it’s been a great night,” he said.

The RSA is also turning on entertainment for the night with band Breakthrough playing from 8am.

Restaurants in both clubs will be open in the early part of the evening and there will be cour-

tesy buses running.

Nightspot Arcadia is holding a toga party, with giveaways for best dressed partygoers, local band XIPOID playing from 9pm to 1am and a DJ closing out the night.

The Ashburton Trust is taking a low key approach to New Year’s Eve. While all of its premises will be open for business, nothing special is planned, said chief ex-

ecutive Giles Beal.

“Ashburton is always very quiet. All the pubs will be open and we’ll have a countdown to the new year but it’ll be a very chilled out night,” he said.

Nightclubs the Arcadia and The Print Room are also expecting the night to be low key.

While Arcadia will have its house band on stage, owner Paul Millichamp said he wasn’t planning for a big night.

A QSM for foundation founder

Neil Sinclair might be a retired accountant, but Ashburton’s latest recipient of a Queen’s Service Medal has been busier than ever since finishing work.

And it is that busyness as the founder of the Advance Ashburton Foundation that earned Neil his place among the New Zealanders on this year’s New Year’s Honours list for services to philanthropy and his community.

Prior to retirement Mr Sinclair spent 50 years in Ashburton working with an accountancy firm Gabites, known in earlier years as Hubbard, Churcher, Gabites.

He qualified in Dunedin, working for an accountancy firm by day and attending university at night, married wife Jeanette and moved to Timaru into the offices of Alan Hubbard. That proved to be a brutal introduction to the working world.

“I thought I’d die young if I stayed there, through hard work and pressure. He expected a lot of his staff. A year down the track I saw the light and the best thing I did was to leave, but Alan Hubbard was a very, very bright man, he had an amazing brain,” Mr Sinclair said.

In 1964 he moved to Ashburton and joined forces with Ron Gabites - two accountants and

two office staff; when Mr Sinclair left 39 years later, the staff numbers exceeded 30. He retired as senior partner and was happy to step away from the industry that had been his working life.

“There’s nothing worse than the old dogs who keep hanging in there, I was happy to retire,” he said.

While his working life as an accountant had finished, Mr Sinclair wasn’t content to sit back and potter in the garden.

He was familiar with the valuable role philanthropic foundations played and was keen to explore options around establishing one in Ashburton.

“We started this thing from scratch and didn’t really know where it would end up. It took a while for people to understand it but now it’s come of age and it will continue,” he said.

The Tindall foundation, however, was the vital cog that ensured Ashburton’s organisation got off the ground, providing it with seed funding.

Ashburton was different to other foundations with similar roles in their communities, in that it initially had no paid employees and all money granted or bequeathed, earned money to be given away in grants. Mr Sinclair was the foundation’s chair for its first 10 years and provided all of its financial management pro bono.

“Today I’m really proud of how it has grown. I look back on my life and realise that the things you do for your community are some of the most satisfying things in your life.”

An enduring thread through

Neil and Jeanette Sinclair’s life has been their involvement in their church, St David’s at Allenton.

Mr Sinclair has been on the parish council for 28 years, was its chair for 20 of those,

he taught bible class, arranged church dances and if a willing volunteer was needed he was one of the first in line.

It was through the church he met Jeanette.

“I saw this dear little girl at youth group and I thought, that’s the girl for me.”

And Jeanette has to take part of the credit for anything he’s done in life, he said.

“You don’t get anywhere without your wife; I wouldn’t have done half of this without her.”

The couple are also supporters of Outward Bound, believing the experience gained on one of the organsiation’s courses can be life changing.

Under his leadership Advance Ashburton established and has run a series of academic scholarship programmes, a local child literacy programme, a welfare programme for rural firefighters, and numerous other community projects.

The foundation has co-ordinated finding premises for the Cancer Society in Ashburton following the Canterbury earthquakes, and the raising of $1.5 million to rebuild the damaged Ashburton Hospital and construct a new Elective Surgery Unit.

Mr Sinclair has been a Rotarian in Ashburton since 1985, holding almost every leadership position.

Sport of polo his life-long passion

When Emmet O’Sullivan received a letter from the Governor-General asking if he would accept nomination as a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, he thought it was a hoax.

He quickly realised the letter was genuine but was unsure what he should do.

“I talked to my children and they said, ‘look dad, this is what these things are for, they’re for ordinary people who do things’,” he said.

Mr O’Sullivan’s honour is for his services to polo, a sport that has been a life-long passion.

He first saw it played at the Christchurch show when he was about 21. He was hooked.

“We used horses all the time on the farm and my brother and the Askin boys thought it looked pretty good so we just got together and started to play a bit. The horses didn’t know much about polo and we didn’t either.”

At that time polo was strong in the North Island but there were few clubs in the south, but with the enthusiasm of the young Ashburton men polo quickly caught on and new clubs formed.

It was a time of learning for both the men and their horses and while it might take two or three years to get a horse up to competitive standard, when

they’re there, they love playing, Mr O’Sullivan said.

In his playing days he pulled together a team of Canterbury players and challenged the North Island for the coveted Savile Cup. Ashburton players, with Mr O’Sullivan as their captain, also made their mark, winning the South Island trophy, the Gould Cup on eight occasions.

While captain of the Ashburton Polo Club for almost 10 years from 1974, his team won most of the South Island competitions.

After a life time dedicated to the sport, Mr O’Sullivan no longer plays polo, but is still an avid follower.

“It’s the greatest sport on earth, there’s no doubt about that, it’s wonderful but it’s a

young man’s game. I don’t miss playing. I know very well if I did start to play again I’d be only half as good as I was and it would annoy me intensely. You have to be very fit for it, it’s a very demanding sport if you want to play it well.”

Over the years he’s been a key figure on the management and coaching front.

He was the South Island coach

for five years, was elected to the South Island association and did his time as president.

He served time on the sport’s national body and as its vicepresident and is a life member.

As coach, he travelled with the New Zealand team to compete at the Royal Perth Show in front of Queen Elizabeth and played in the 1974 Commonwealth Games where Prince Philip umpired the match.

“He was just one of us really, he had a cup of tea afterwards and talked to everyone, but we had the common ground of polo.”

The Ashburton club he helped found has long gone, but he’s heartened for the future of the sport for amateur players by the introduction of a super polo programme for youngsters.

New Zealand has become a big supply source of good polo ponies for England, but no matter how good the pony, the rider has to be first rate too to create the perfect combination.

“The polo pony is 90 per cent of the game, but the player is 100 per cent of the pony,” he said.

Mr O’Sullivan is humbled by his recognition and puzzled over how it came about, but said he’s never regretted a minute of the time he gave to the sport he still loves.

“But I have to say, there is still life after polo.”

Answering the calls for help

By day, Brett Collins ensures Mid Canterbury people get their daily bread.

But it’s just one of three important jobs he does. He’s also a father to two young children, and is one of the now 35 volunteer firefighters who work around the clock ensuring the town’s calls for help are answered.

He’s one of six new firefighters taken on by the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade this year in what was a historic move.

The new recruits took their total number to 35 firefighters – the most they’ve ever had – and included one female, the first time in the Ashburton brigade’s 140 -year history it’s had a female firefighter on its books.

For the brigade, it’s a case of sharing an increasingly big load around – they’re one of the country’s busiest brigades. They surpassed 450 call-outs for the year in 2013 – the busiest year the brigade’s ever experienced – and as of yesterday they were up to 425 for 2014. In 2012 they attended 372 call-outs.

Ashburton fire chief Alan Burgess said it was a high number and unlike 2013, which had a freak wind storm thrown in resulting in an extraordinarily busy day, 2014 had just been run of the mill.

One of Ashburton’s newest firefighters – Goodman Fielder bread delivery run owner Brett Collins – has joined one of the country’s busiest volunteer brigades.

“I don’t think we have had anything that’s been a real event.

There’s been an odd little event every now that’s out of the ordinary but nothing that’s been a major change,” he said.

“It really has been quite a mix. I would have to say that the medical assists have been probably quite consistent with last year.

“I don’t think there has been a huge increase in that, with the current memorandum of understanding they have with St John we are only being turned

out to purple calls.”

Purple calls are classed as life threatening where assistance might be required, but firefighters are also at times called to help with lifting of patients too.

It’s all part of being a volunteer firefighter in 2014.

Mr Collins first became a volunteer firefighter three years ago in Omarama after being talked into it by a friend who just happened to be the deputy chief.

He then moved to the Wanaka brigade – a brigade of 30 which

attended around 150 call-outs a year.

“So it’s a similar size but way less call-outs,” he said.

In Wanaka he worked as a hunting guide, but with two young children at home he needed a change; a change which would allow him more time at home with his young family.

So he purchased a bread delivery run in Ashburton and eight months ago the family arrived in their new home town.

Today he delivers around 70 per cent of the town’s bread – up to

3000 loaves a day at times – to the district’s shops, supplying most of the main brands.

Mr Collins approached the Ashburton brigade, but they had a steady membership and rarely took on new members.

But then he got a call – they were boosting their numbers by five and wondered if he’d be interested.

He was, but so were a lot of other people so interviews had to be done.

Mr Collins made the cut and with his training already having been done, he’s already he’s notched up a number of fire call-outs with his new brigade – his first being a lengthy hay shed fire earlier this month.

For Mr Collins, family and work come before fires, but as much as he can, he’ll be there when the call for help goes up.

It’s not always the easiest job – when children are involved it’s the worst – but it’s worth it.

Helping people in their time of need is rewarding.

“You get the likes of all the car crashes, but the other day we went to an older person’s house where a pipe had burst and flooded the house,” Mr Collins said. It was all just part of being a modern-day volunteer firefighter.

“You never know when your pager’s going to go off and what’s going to happen.”

Dedicated to volunteering

Marian Martin is a woman who is known for her dedication to volunteer work within the Methven community.

This dedication was acknowledged in December when she received an Ashburton District Council Community Honour Award.

She was nominated by Kathryn McKendry and seconded

by Mary Stone.

“I was shocked,” she said.

“I feel so much gratitude towards Kathryn and Mary.”

Marian is particularly interested in heritage and history, and has dedicated a large portion of her time to the art of cataloguing photos, garments, paper records and other artifacts of the Methven Historical Society over the last 12 years.

Marian said she enjoyed spending her time on such a project.

“I have always been interested in heritage,” she said.

She spent four years as the president of the Methven Historical Society, and prior to that she was a committee member.

She is also a part of Historic Places Mid Canterbury and Heritage New Zealand.

One of Marian’s biggest accomplishments is also linked to her love of all things historical.

She was involved with the research, and the completion of Coal Range and Candlelight – a publication that contained a collection of stories about pioneering women of the Methven district.

Community Honour Award winner, Marian Martin is passionate about heritage.

A group of 15 people in total worked on the book, which took nine years to complete – the research for which began back in 1993.

“We aimed for it [to be done] by 2000, but it had to be right or we would have regretted it,” she said.

The formatting, she said, was one of the most difficult parts.

“There were three of us that did most of the [it].”

But the group did have a subeditor to help, “to give it that little flair”.

The book was released in 2001, and copies can be pur-

chased from the Methven bookshop or loaned from the library.

Other than this, Marian was also involved in the production of a Methven Heritage Walk brochure and also compiled information for the Methven Cemetery Walk and the History of Houses Walk.

She helped to compile the History of the Lyndhurst School District – a booklet to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the school.

She said everything she had been involved in had been a team effort, and credited every-

one else she had worked with on various projects, for their input and support.

When asked if being a recipient would make her want to put forward someone else for the Community Honour Award, she said “definitely”.

“There are many deserving people out there.”

As for what Marian is up to at the moment, she said she enjoys spending time with her family and is focusing a lot on her home as she and her husband have moved from Methven and now reside in Ashburton.

Roger Sauvarin was feeling pretty good about himself when he went out for a dive on Elizabeth Reef off Whananaki in Northland on Monday. Just a day earlier the 49-year-old Auckland sales manager had scored the biggest crayfish of his life, a beauty that weighed in at 3.3kg. Monday’s beast turned out to be a bit of a tiddler compared to the 4.3kg monster he latched onto just 24 hours later. While clearly huge, Mr Sauvarin’s catch – which was one of eight caught be the group on the day – is unlikely to be a record.

Packhorse crayfish are typically larger than their tasty cousin the spiny rock lobster, and can reportedly grow as big as 15kg.

Workplace death A criminal investigation has been launched following the death of a man at a Christmas party in Southland. Police confirmed yesterday an investigation into the death of Robin Lloyd, 50, was under way. The Southland man was seriously injured at a Winton work function on December 19 and died in Dunedin Hospital on Monday. Sergeant Dave Kennelly of Invercargill police, declined to comment on speculation the man died after being hit by a partygoer doing a burn-out in a vehicle.

However, he confirmed the fatal injuries were sustained after the alleged misuse of a hire van in a work building. No charges had been laid.

Burst main sends water 30m into air Up to eight properties were flooded when a water main ruptured in Alexandra yesterday.

Water sprayed about 30m into the air and the geyser was visible from the town’s fire station, about 1km away.

After the main in Bodkin Rd, Bridge Hill, burst, water flowed down The Half Mile to the Alexandra Bridge, and through residential sections.

Debris littered the streets.

He diverted water to stop it flowing into other properties.

The geyser reached the height of nearby pine trees.

Alexandra Station Officer Shane Ryan said more than 20 firefighters and two appliances attended.

Between six and eight houses on different streets had bedrooms, gardens and basements flooded.

Alexandra Chief Fire Officer Russell Anderson said the brigade had to wait for Fulton Hogan staff to turn off the wa-

ter before beginning pumping.

The flow of water had abated by about 5pm.

The extent of damage from the flooding was not known yet.

Some of the water flowing down The Half Mile ran into Barbara Dickinson’s basement garage.

Inside were her Mini car, a lounge suite, freezer, and other family items.

Her son, Aaron, noticed the flooding, but there was nothing he and Barbara’s grandson Troy (11) could do.

“It flooded the whole basement. There would have been 2 feet (76cm) of water at the peak of it, “ he said.

The fire brigade pumped water out on to the street, but the

freezer, rubbish bin and other items were “floating”.

Afterwards, a layer of scum showed the level the flooding reached.

Mrs Dickinson was visibly upset.

“I had a lot of stuff in there, stuff that belonged to my mother-in-law, kids’ old toys.

“You have to smile otherwise you would scream.”

She had insurance and was thankful for the efforts of the fire brigade, who “did a good job”.

Central Otago District Council water services manager Russell Bond said only “a couple” of properties would be affected as the majority drew water from a reservoir.

A German woman and her teenage son are in a serious condition after a crash involving two groups of tourists on State Highway 5 in Reporoa. The crash between a people-mover and a hatchback happened about 11.15am yesterday.

Imagine Ashburton without Lake Hood Sue Newman

unny how some of the projects that attract the strongest public criticism while they’re being built, end up becoming one of a district’s greatest assets.

Take Lake Hood. Today you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who would say it was a bad idea, an ill-conceived project; step back 10 or so years and people were lining up to call it a waste of money, to say it was a project that would never work. How wrong they were.

Lake Hood is now one of the district’s stand-out attractions, well used by both locals and outof-towners.

Visitors sing its praises, saying it’s worth the trip from Christchurch and beats any stretch of fresh water they have closer to home and, for many locals, it’s become a summer home away from home.

It’s the ultimate community asset. While the lake’s canals are lined with homes, its waters belong to all comers. An extension project now forging ahead will more than double the park’s housing stocks and its area of water. All it lacks is a casual daytime café and the ability to accommodate overnighters, be it in apartments or in a camping area with toilet and shower facilities.

Bushfire emergency Lives and homes are in danger from an out-of-control bushfire burning in the Shire of Toodyay in West Australia’s Wheatbelt region. An emergency warning has been issued for people in the southern part of Toodyay near Salt Valley Road, Challeon Lane, Panorama View, Hoddy Well Road and Sandplain Road. People in the area are in danger and need to act immediately to survive, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services said. The fire is moving fast in a north westerly direction and is out-of-control and unpredictable.

Chickens slaughtered Japan has ordered the slaughter of some 37,000 chickens as officials announced the third bird flu outbreak in less than a month and pledged “all necessary measures” to contain the spread.

Tests confirmed the H5 strain of the virus at a farm in Yamaguchi prefecture on the southwestern tip of Japan’s main Honshu island after its owner reported late on Monday that several chickens had died suddenly, the farm ministry said.

Earlier, an AFP photographer on the search plane that spotted the possible debris said he had seen objects in the sea resembling a life raft, life jackets and long orange tubes as they flew just 150 metres above the water.

Indonesian air force official Agus Dwi Putranto told reporters: “We spotted about 10 big objects and many more small white-coloured objects which we could not photograph.”

“The position is 10 kilometres from the location the plane was last captured by radar,” he said.

Putranto displayed 10 photos of objects resembling a plane door, emergency slide, and a square box-like object.

“It is not really clear ... it could be the wall of the plane or the door of the plane,” he said.

“Let’s pray that those objects are what we are really trying to find,” he said in Pangkalan Bun in Central Kalimantan, on the island of Borneo.

The search has focused on waters around the islands of Bangka and Belitung in the Java Sea, across from Kalimantan.

Putranto said a helicopter was heading to the location 190km from Pangkalan Bun and if the debris is confirmed to be from the plane, search

and rescue ships would be sent out.

Indonesian officials appear to have been preparing for the worst, with National Search and Rescue Agency chief Bambang Soelistyo saying on Monday it was likely the plane was at “the bottom of the sea”, based on its estimated position.

The plane’s disappearance comes at the end of a disastrous year for Malaysian aviation.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing in March with 239 passengers and crew on board, and in July flight MH17 was shot down over unrest-torn Ukraine.

Chinese businessman jailed for tiger feasts A Chinese businessman who bought and ate three tigers has been sentenced to 13 years in prison.

The wealthy real estate developer, identified only by his surname Xu, has “a special hobby of grilling tiger bones, boning tiger paws, storing tiger penis, eating tiger meat and drinking tiger blood alcohol,” the official Xinhua news agency said in June when he went on trial.

Xu organised three separate trips last year for a total of 15 people, including himself, to

Plane, bodies found Indonesian officials have spotted six bodies from the AirAsia flight that disappeared two days earlier, and recovered three of them, in a painful end to the aviation mystery off the coast of Borneo island.

The bodies were found in Java Sea waters about 10 kilometres from Flight 8501’s last communications with air-traffic control.

The plane with 162 people on board disappeared on Sunday on its way from Surabaya, Indonesia to Singapore after encountering storm clouds.

The three recovered bodies, swollen but intact, were brought to an Indonesian navy ship, National Search and Rescue Director SB Supriyadi told reporters in the nearest town, Pangkalan Bun. The corpses did not have life jackets on.

Images on Indonesian television showed a half-naked bloated body bobbing in the sea.

Search and rescue teams were lowered on ropes from a hovering helicopter to retrieve corpses.

As family members of the plane’s passengers sat together in a waiting room at the Surabaya airport, they watched the graphic details on television.

Many screamed and wailed uncontrollably, breaking down into tears while they squeezed each other.

One middle-aged man collapsed and was rushed from the room on a stretcher.

The discovery came after several pieces of red, white and black debris were spotted in the Java Sea near Borneo island.

One of them filmed the entire process of a tiger slaughter with his mobile phone. The footage was later obtained by police.

Police seized eight pieces of animal meat and bones from a refrigerator in Xu’s home, some of which were later iden-

tified as tiger parts, including a penis, the report said, adding that 16 geckos and a cobra were also found.

A court in Guangxi earlier this year convicted the 15 of “illegally transporting precious and endangered wild animal products” but the conviction was not reported at the time.

Xu was sentenced to 13 years in prison and a fine of 1.55 million yuan, gxnews. com.cn said, with the others jailed for terms between five and six and a half years, and given smaller fines.

Tiger bones have long been an ingredient of traditional Chinese medicine, supposedly for a capacity to strengthen the human body, and while they have been removed from its official ingredient list, the belief still persists among some Chinese.

It is a long-held belief across parts of Asia that penises of animals such as tigers and seals can boost men’s sexual performance.

There is no orthodox scientific evidence for such claims.

Customs officers will soon carry guns in Australian airports. The move to issue Customs and Border Protection Service officers with personal defensive equipment, including guns, is part of changes to the structure of the agency guarding Australia’s entry points.

Immigration Minister Peter Dutton said equipping officers with weapons would add an extra layer of deterrence at Australia’s borders. “People smugglers, transnational crime gangs and narcotic traffickers should be under no illusion,” he said in a statement.

Gorbachev ‘charming’ Classified documents have shed light on the political courtship between Britain’s Margaret Thatcher and Mikhail Gorbachev whom she famously declared she could “do business” with. After Gorbachev’s first official visit to Britain in 1984, four months before he became Soviet leader, Thatcher praised his “charm and humour” as both sides sought to improve EastWest relations. The documents were released yesterday by the National Archives in London under the 30-year rule.

Man ‘shot in the back’ The autopsy report for an unarmed black man who was killed by Los Angeles police officers shows he was shot in the back at close range. According to a copy of the highly anticipated report, posted online, Ezell Ford had been shot three times - once in the back, once in the arm and once in the abdomen. The wound to the back left a muzzle imprint on Ford’s skin, suggesting he was shot at close range. Ford’s death is among a string of cases this year in which black men have been killed by police under contentious circumstances. Demonstrators have taken to the streets across the US to protest what they say is disproportionate police violence against black people.

Mitre 10 posts profit Mitre 10 (New Zealand), the cooperative that services the Mitre 10 hardware chain, turned to a full-year profit, saying it is holding its own in the DIY market where it competes with the Bunnings and Placemakers stores. Profit was $1.4 million in the year ended June 30, from a loss of $2.89 million a year earlier, according to the Aucklandbased company’s annual report.

Sales rose to $675 million from $591 million.

Holidays affect trading New Zealand shares fell in light trading, with many institutional investors absent from the market for summer holidays. Auckland International Airport and Vector led the decline.

The NZX 50 Index fell 15.128 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 5577.201. Within the index, 30 stocks fell, 13 rose and seven were unchanged. Turnover was about $53 million, compared to a daily average $162 million in November. The index has gained about 18 per cent this year, adding to 2013’s 24 per cent advance.

Auckland Airport fell 2.3 per cent to $4.30 and Vector fell 2.1 per cent to $2.78. Trade Me Group, the online auction company, fell 1.9 per cent to $3.60 and A2 Milk dropped 1.7 per cent to 57 cents.

Kiwi on a rollercoaster ride

BY TINA MORRISON The New Zealand dollar is heading for a 5 per cent decline against the greenback in 2014, in a year which saw the currency soar close to a post-float high and prompted the central bank to intervene to bring it down.

The Kiwi started the year at 81.91 US cents, and touched 88.35 cents in July, within a whisper of its post-float high of 88.40 cents, but has since declined to trade recently at 77.85 cents.

The expanded trade-weighted index is at 79.13 currently, having started the year at 77.86.

The currency was on a tear in the first half of the year, driven by optimism stemming from the rebuild of earthquake-damaged Christchurch and Fonterra Cooperative Group’s record payout to dairy farmers.

Heading into the end of the year, the Kiwi is close to record highs against the Australian dollar and is also strong against the yen and the euro, reflecting comparatively weaker economies where policy makers are expected to introduce more stimulus.

That could see Wheeler continue his campaign against the

Meanwhile, the US dollar is ending the year on a high note, as traders bet a recovery in the world’s largest economy will see the Federal Reserve hike interest rates next year.

“2014 has ended with signs of a resurgent US dollar, particularly against the euro and the yen whose central banks are throwing more money at their economies with the intention of staving off deflation, promoting growth and with the result of a weaker currency,” said Bancorp’s Cavanaugh.

“The New Zealand economy is not doing badly, particularly against most of our trading partners, we are actually doing jolly well,” he said.

The currency may track beside, or a fraction behind, the stronger US dollar in 2015, compared with its weaker peers, Cavanaugh said.

Bathurst Resources says it’s lucky to have a domestic coal business to keep it going until international coal prices recover.

2014 had been a “tumultuous year” for the company, said managing director Hamish Bohannan in Bathurst’s latest newsletter.

International coking coal prices had plummeted after Bathurst received consent for its Denniston Escarpment Mine.

“This meant making the hard decision to put the full development of the project on hold.”

However, Bathurst had started work on the ground, Mr Bohannan said.

It was establishing water management facilities, clearing roads and stockpile areas, and installing mine infrastructure.

It had recovered the first coal from Escarpment, as part of the construction process, in September, and would be ready to ramp up production when coal prices recovered.

Mr Bohannan said Bathurst had developed a sound domestic business to carry the company through.

It was supplying coal to dairy, cement and food processing industries.

He did not mention that Bathurst’s cement contract, with Holcim’s Cape Foulwind

He said Escarpment would be the first new coal mine to operate under new mining health and safety regulations that came into force in December last year.

Bathurst’s chief operating officer Richard Tacon and site senior executive, Buller operations, Richard Thompson, had been industry representatives on a panel that reviewed the regulations.

Mr Tacon had also been reelected to the board of the Mines Rescue Trust, representing opencast coal mining, Mr Bohannan said.

etting home after sometimes long hours, the last thing you want to do is cook, but this latest offering from Simon Holst is what it says it is, Simply Delicious One Dish Recipes.

Cut down on dishes and time and don’t compromise on flavour, this one’s a winner for me.

I rate a book on how many recipes I bookmark to try and in this one I wanted to try many.

Most of the recipes are uncomplicated and full of goodies to give you a tasty meal!

Butternut, onion & feta tarts

1t ground cumin 1/2 t each paprika and salt 2 medium onions, peeled and sliced 1T sugar 1T balsamic vinegar 2t fresh thyme, chopped pepper to taste 1 sheet (about 160g) frozen puff pastry, thawed 100g feta cheese ■ Preheat the oven to 200°C. ■ Cut the pumpkin into thin (about 5mm) slices. Transfer these to a large bowl and add 1 tablespoon of the oil. Sprinkle with the cumin, paprika and salt then toss gently to combine. Spread the seasoned pumpkin slices over a baking sheet covered with baking paper or a non-stick liner, then bake at 200°C for 12–15 minutes or until the edges begin to brown and the flesh is soft.

■ While the pumpkin cooks, heat the remaining oil in a large frying pan. Add the onion and cook, stirring frequently, until it is soft and is beginning to brown (this should take about 10 minutes).

Stir in the sugar and balsamic vinegar and cook for a few minutes longer, stirring continuously, until the mixture is a nutty brown colour.

■ Tip the cooked pumpkin back into the bowl. Add the caramelised onion mixture, the thyme and a generous grind of black pepper and toss gently to combine.

■ Quarter the pastry sheet to give four smaller squares. Arrange the pastry squares a few centimetres apart on the baking sheet.

Using a sharp knife, score a line 5–7mm in from the edge of each square (don’t cut right through the sheet).

■ Divide the pumpkin and onion mixture between the four squares, trying to keep the marked border of the pastry

clear. Cut the feta into four pieces and crumble one piece over each square.

■ Bake at 200°C for 12–15 minutes until the feta browns at the edges and the pastry is golden.

Remove from the oven and cool for a few minutes before serving with a salad and some bread on the side.

Israeli couscous salad For 4–6 servings: 1T olive oil 1 small onion, peeled and diced 1 1/2 C (about 200g) Israeli couscous 2C vegetable stock (or 2C water and 1t stock powder) 1/2 t salt 1 punnet (250g) cherry tomatoes 2 roasted red peppers* 1/4 C each chopped mint and parsley 100g feta, crumbled 2C baby spinach leaves Dressing: 1/4 C olive oil 2T white wine vinegar 1t sugar 1t smoked paprika 1/2 t salt and pepper *You can chargrill and peel the

peppers yourself or used bottled ones ■ Heat the oil in a large pot or frying pan with a close-fitting lid.

Add the onion and cook, stirring frequently until the onion softens, then stir in the couscous.

Continue to cook, stirring every minute or so, for about 5 minutes until the couscous has lightly browned.

■ Add the stock (or water and stock powder) and salt. Bring the mixture to the boil then reduce the heat to a gentle simmer. Cover the pot with the lid and cook for 8–10 minutes until the water has been absorbed and the couscous is tender (add a little extra water if required). Set the couscous aside to cool.

■ Prepare the dressing by whisking all the ingredients together (or measure everything into a screw-top jar and shake to combine).

■ Halve the tomatoes and add them to a bowl. Cut the roasted peppers into 5mm strips and add these to the tomatoes along with the herbs. Add the couscous and stir to combine.

■ Crumble about two-thirds of the feta into the bowl, then add the spinach leaves and the dressing.

Stir gently to combine, then garnish with the remaining feta.

■ Serve immediately or cover and refrigerate until required.

Vietnamese spring rolls For 2–3 servings: 200g cooked chicken breast, shredded 50g rice vermicelli 2T sweet chilli sauce 2T fish sauce 2T lime juice 1 medium carrot, julienned 1/2 to 1C julienned cucumber 1–2C small lettuce leaves 1 red pepper, finely sliced

1/4 to 1/2 C mint leaves 1/4 to 1/2 C chopped coriander leaves 8–12 rice paper wrappers Peanut dipping sauce: 1/4 C peanut butter 2T hoisin sauce 1 clove garlic, peeled and chopped 1/4 C boiling water minced red chilli to taste ■ Shred the chicken and place it in a bowl. Put the rice vermicelli in another bowl and cover it with boiling water. Leave to soak for 5 minutes, then drain well.

■ Measure the sweet chilli sauce, fish sauce and lime juice into a small bowl and stir to combine.

Pour half the sauce over the shredded chicken and half over the drained vermicelli. Stir both to combine.

■ Prepare the remaining ingredients. Soak the wrappers in warm water, one at a time, until they are soft and flexible (about 20– 40 seconds depending on the wrappers), then drain and place on a flat surface. Spread 2–3 tablespoons of the chicken across the middle of the wrapper. Add a little of the carrot, cucumber, and sliced red pepper. Add a lettuce leaf or two and some of the herbs, then some of the vermicelli.

■ Fold the bottom edge of the wrapper over the filling. Fold in the sides, so it’s like an envelope, then roll up. Repeat with the other wrappers. Arrange completed rolls on a plate or platter, covering with plastic wrap or a clean damp cloth if preparing in advance.

■ To make the dipping sauce, place all ingredients in a small bowl and stir to combine.

■ Serve the spring rolls with the peanut dipping sauce or sweet chilli sauce.

Young artist receives seal of approval from superstar

Sixteen-year-old Laura Mackenzie has had one of her popular culture portraits given the seal of approval from its subject.

And that person is none other than Lorde herself.

Miss Mackenzie has sketched a portrait of the musical superstar for Methven’s cash and carry exhibition, under way in the ski town.

One of the teenager’s former teacher’s relatives knows Takapuna-born Ella YelichO’Connor, who performs as Lorde, and had showed her an image of the drawing.

Miss Mackenzie heard back through the grapevine that Lorde said “it was awesome and tell her I love it”.

Other portraits Miss Mackenzie exhibited at the cash and carry include one of Lord of the Rings star Frodo, which sold by Christmas, Game of Thrones star Daenerys, and a picture of an owl.

Miss Mackenzie enjoys doing portraits of figures from popular culture and among those she has sketched are Benedict Cumberbatch, Graham Norton, Nicholas Cage, movie figures Harry Potter and Katniss, and well-known YouTubers Pewdiepie and Tyler Oakley.

She said she began drawing portraits in Year 8 art classes under the tuition of Miss Cooney at Ashburton Intermediate.

“I just kind of carried it on because I thought it was fun,” Miss Mackenzie said.

She began with pencil sketches and has recently begun using coloured pencils as well.

sions, where she paints people from photographs. Miss Mackenzie will undertake NCEA Level 3 art at Ashburton College next year and plans to go to polytech or university to improve her craft once she leaves school. She said as well as drawing, she hoped to learn about sculpture and other art forms.

Last year she visited Weta Workshop, “and thought it would be cool to work there”.

She has no qualms about following a career in art, and her parents Ken and Rowena support her.

Mr Mackenzie said he was impressed by his daughter’s talent, which she may have inherited from Mrs Mackenzie and both her grandmothers who were artistic.

“If you ask me to do any of that type of drawing, I would not even get close,” Mr Mackenzie said.

In brief Cycling fun day The Tinwald Cycling Club will start its 2015 programme nice and early, with a family fun day on the track on New Year’s Day. The annual event is aimed at all ages and the programme will be designed on the day, depending on who turns up.

In the past it has attracted cyclists from around Mid and South Canterbury, and some from Christchurch, and with the weather meant to be mainly fine on Thursday organisers are hoping for another good turnout. Racing will get under way at 12.30pm at the club’s velodrome off Maronan Road.

Warne claims credit Shane Warne has cheekily taken credit for axed Test paceman Mitchell Starc’s blistering performance for the Sydney Sixers. Warne clearly annoyed Starc when he described his body language as “soft”. Starc turned up the heat in the Sixers’ loss to the Scorchers on Monday. Starc took 2-10 off his last three, consistently clocking close to, and occasionally over, 150 km/h. Feisty test ends in tame draw

By RoB FoRsaith Australia reclaimed the BorderGavaskar trophy, as a hostile Boxing Day Test with India ended in a draw yesterday.

Needing only a draw to win the series, Steve Smith declared at lunch on day five and asked the tourists to attempt a record run-chase of 384 runs in two sessions at the MCG. India slumped to 3-19 in response and the four-Test series was essentially decided.

The victory India needed to keep the series alive, which would have set a new mark for successful Test run-chases at the MCG, was never going to

All requests for service during the holiday period can be phoned through to the Council on (03) 307 7700. Our 24 hour call service is operating throughout the holiday period.

All calls will be answered and all urgent requests for service will be attended to by on-call staff. Nonurgent requests will be attended to from Monday 5 January 2015.

New Year Collections

Whether you’re out for a day trip, or on a cross-country holiday, Ashburton District Council urges all residents to put safety first when setting out on their summer travels.

Resource Recovery Parks The Ashburton Resource Recovery Park will be closed on: • Thursday 1 January 2015 Rubbish and Recycling - Kerbside Collection If your collection day is a Thursday or Friday there will be some changes over the holiday period.

Collections normally scheduled for Thursday 1 January will be collected on Wednesday 31 December 2014.

Collections normally scheduled for Friday 2 January will be collected on Monday 5 January 2015.

There are no changes to any other collections.

Please ensure all rubbish and recycling is placed at kerbside by 7.30am on collection day.

LIBR ARY HOLIDAY HOURS The Ashburton Public Library have some changes to their opening hours over the holiday period.

You might notice some road works when you’re out on the road this holiday season. This is because summer is the time of year when conditions are right for upgrading roads.

We have the fourth largest road network in the country and Council is committed to ensuring all roads are maintained to the right standard. $6 million has been approved this year for resurfacing and rehabilitation projects on the districts roading network.

HAVE YOUR SAY Ashburton District Council’s draft Development & Financial Contributions Policy is now available for community consultation.

The policy details the approach Council will take to ensure developers pay a fair share of the costs associated with providing additional infrastructure capacity specifically to cater for future new development.

Good weather great for golfers Clear skies and warm weather have proven too good to resist for golfers around the district over the Christmas period so far. Making the most of the fine conditions yesterday at the Ashburton Golf Club yesterday was Merv Green.

Keith still on track for title Sandra Keith’s hot form at the Bowls New Zealand National Open Championships continued in Auckland yesterday.

Keith, eyeing her fifth national bowls title, and pairs partner Serena Matthews remain unbeaten after two days of action on the greens in the women’s pairs competition.

Earlier in the championships, Keith Sandra Keith steps up to deliver another bowl.

made it through to post-section play in the women’s singles, unbeaten.

That form has continued through to the pairs, with Keith and Matthews unbeaten in their first two games on Monday, and winning all four of their matches played yesterday to qualify as one of the top contenders.

Meanwhile Carol Wilson from Methven teamed up with Hikutaia’s

Pauline Bax again on day two of the women’s pairs, after mixed results on day one.

A win and a loss on day one was followed up by a day of losses though and in round five, the pair didn’t play.

The finals in the men’s and women’s pairs and singles will take place on Sunday, before fours action gets under way on Monday.
