A 37-year dream that saw Catherine and Alan Trott become stars in the world of spectacular public gardens, is about to come to an end with their property sold to a local charitable trust.

Over the years they turned four hectares of windswept, barren land into a garden of international renown.

Now they’re about to swap public life for a quieter, more private urban life, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be leaving the world of gardens behind them.

For the couple it has been a long jour-

ney from life in a derelict home in the middle of a barren paddock to today’s showcase garden. It’s a dream they’ve realised and a dream they’re happy to walk away from.

The sale has been rumbling around for a few years, Trott said, and with the deal clinched, he’s looking ahead to new gardening ventures.

“You don’t live forever and we’re much better getting out now rather than staying on too long and watching the place go backwards,” he said.

They knew finding a buyer for their property was never going to be easy and were delighted when the trust signalled an interest in taking over.

“It’s great to think it’s going to be kept alive, but a garden is not a museum, it changes, it must change. A garden is a process and this will continue to be an evolving process.”

Student stress at higher levels

Ashburton youth are experiencing skyrocketing stress levels as they make their way through high school, say new survey results released by the YMCA. Ashburton District dwellers between 12 and 24 years reported higher stress levels than that of their Mackenzie, Timaru and Waimate counterparts, and feeling more stress with age.

On average, 44 per cent of Ashburton’s young people said that stress negatively affects them “most of the time” or “always”.

The YMCA reported that this rate increases with age and correlates with NCEA years.

Participants in the survey were also asked to indicate what causes them to feel stressed.

School, exams and NCEA were cited as the most common causes, followed by relationships with family, parents and friends.

Other contributing factors reported were work, feeling too busy or overloaded, pressure and expectations.

Mount Hutt College guidance counsellor Paul Wilkins said he thought stress had “peaked a little more over the past couple of months than average”, but didn’t think NCEA was solely to blame.

He said NCEA’s incremental nature, with assessments spread throughout the year, was possibly easier on stress levels than past alternatives.

“School Cert possibly created more stress, because students had three-hour exams to remember everything they had studied in the year.”

He said there may be a range

of other background factors contributing to the high stress rates, including heightened social media use.

“I think students that access their phone at every notification must find it harder to concentrate, or find time to focus on study.”

His options for tackling harmful stress included building healthy sleeping patterns, exercising and enjoying fresh air activities, and staying in control of mobile phone use.

A YMCA Resiliency Toolkit had also been implemented at Mount Hutt College to help equip students with stress management skills.

YMCA spokesperson Michele Keggenhoff said the resiliency toolkits were launched after results from the last youth survey, and following this year’s results, they would be hoping to extend their toolkits to other schools, including Ashburton College.

This is the first year the youth survey has approached youth from other Mid and South Canterbury districts beyond Timaru.

Despite the reported stress, a 59 per cent majority of Ashburton youth thought their quality of life was above average, describing it as “good” or “extremely good”.

Twelve per cent of Ashburton’s youth think they have “poor” or “extremely poor” quality of life, whilst 29 per cent rated theirs “average”.

Seven-hundred-and-twenty-four people across Mid and South Canterbury took part in the survey, and the full results are available on the YMCA website, http://www.ymcasc.org.nz/

A dramatic car fire on the Mt Hutt access road yesterday morning left traffic backed up and a vehicle “completely skeletal”, but its owners weren’t about to miss out on a day of skiing.

The car ignited at around 9am, 6km up the Mt Hutt access road from State Hi©bghway 77.

It is understood that four people were inside it at the time it caught alight, however, all were able to safely evacuate and grab their belongings from the boot

before the car became completely engulfed in flames.

Methven Volunteer Firefighters raced to the scene, with backup from Alford Forest firefighters and police.

Plumes of smoke were seen billowing from Mt Hutt and a queue of around 100 vehicles formed behind the flaming car.

Methven firefighter Dave McLeod said by the time they got up the mountain, the fire was well involved.

“We had little bits of the engine exploding.”

“It was quite a volatile situation as with any vehicle fire, so we couldn’t let traffic go around it,” he said.

The fire was extinguished in 30 minutes and a tow-truck removed the remains. “There wasn’t much left of it.”

It is not known yet what caused the fire, but it is understood the passengers heard something falling off their vehicle shortly before it overheated and ignited.

McLeod said the passengers carried on and went skiing after the ordeal.

Speed controls continue to concern

The Lagmhor citizens’ society is prepared to dig into its pockets and pay for Slow Down signs outside its school to keep students safe from speeding motorists.

Society chairman Howard Ross said that while they’re working with the Ashburton District Council to find ways around slowing traffic on the Tinwald, Lagmhor, Mayfield Road, they’re also prepared to take things into their own hands.

Bus driver Yvonne Liemburg has been campaigning for months to force the council to erect warning signs around the school. She retired from bus driving on Tuesday, but said she won’t be giving up that campaign.

“We’re totally supportive of Yvonne and her crusade because we’re very concerned about the speeds past the school and we’re trying to go through all the channels we can to get this changed.

The squeaky wheel usually gets the oil, but we’re not getting a lot of oil – yet,” Ross said.

‘We’re working towards a good outcome and we do have things in the pipeline.”

four cars using the road a day; this was now three or four an hour and those vehicles were much bigger and travelled at much higher speeds, Ross said.

“We accept that with any road there’s a certain level of respon-

sibility you must have, but you’d hope that motorists would also have a certain amount of respect around schools.”

Liemburg approached the council in February with her concerns.

This resulted in road markings that were designed to create an illusion of a narrowing road.

That’s made no difference and the effort hasn’t been worth the cost of the paint used, she said.

“It’s been an absolute waste of

time. It might have made a difference for a couple of days but that’s all. When I drive the bus along there, there’s absolutely no illusion of a narrowing road whatever.”

Liemburg said she’d spoken to several district councillors about the issue but had simply been told the council couldn’t change the speed.

“They were just a waste of space.

A local council member recently told me as it is a 100km road they can’t do anything, that parents needed to take some responsibility. Well that was red rag to a bull and my blood boiled,” she said.

“I’ve taken it to heart. I know those kids and I know their families. Even just a big sign with Slow Down on it would help.”

The issue was about more than just speeding vehicles, it was also about the danger posed by stones that were flicked up by passing vehicles, Liemburg said.

“One teacher has had the back window of her car smashed from a flying missile of some kind coming off a vehicle’s wheel. That could’ve been a child’s head.”

The council has limited options in terms of reducing speed on a 100 kilometre road and the road marking exercise was one of the few available. Imposing a reduced speed limit would require the action to be gazetted, as the controlling authority is the NZ Transport Agency.

“They want me to stay on as an adviser but I don’t want to become the grumpy old dictator,” Trott said.

“I think this deal will be good for Ashburton and good for tourism.”

He’s keeping tight-lipped on plans for his urban garden, but said it will include perennial borders, a miniature replica of his famous red garden and some speci-

“But this one will definitely be a private garden. It’ll be wonderful to have a new challenge; I guess I’ll be a gardener until the day I die,” he said.

Knowing the Trotts were considering selling, a number of garden enthusiasts began sharing ideas on ways to keep the property in local hands. They decided to form a charitable trust to buy and operate the property, ensuring the heritage garden was preserved for future generations.

said the trust intended to continue the wonderful legacy that the Trotts had created with the assistance of a group of volunteers to be known as the Friends of Trotts Garden.

“This group of enthusiastic locals will keep the garden in its beautiful state throughout the seasons.

“A lawn-mowing crew will be co-ordinated and they’ll welcome anyone who would like to come along and help out in the garden, the lawns or with visitors to the garden and enjoy the opportunity

to spend a few hours each week in this wonderful internationallyrated garden,” she said.

The trust will fundraise to ensure there was a good financial base for the property. This would enable a permanent marquee to be acquired, renovations to the dwelling and other improvements carried out, all of which would be in keeping with the environment established by the Trotts, Kilworth said.

indeed the country that it be preserved. The Trotts have been very generous in facilitating the transaction and will continue to have an association with the garden into the future.”

The property will continue as a venue for weddings and other private functions, and funds from these activities will go towards the upkeep of the garden and future developments, such as an education centre.

The trust will hold an open day on October 29 to celebrate its community ownership.

Wheelie bin service countdown over

It’s been a long time coming, but early tomorrow the first wheelie bins in the Ashburton District will be picked up and emptied into kerbside collection trucks.

The Ashburton District’s wheelie bin project has been on the drawing board for several years and was signed off during the last council term.

Its introduction was delayed until September this year to spread the rating load.

Council waste recovery manager Craig Goodwin has lived and breathed the project for many months, but with the first collection just hours away, he says the roll-out has been a relatively problem-free exercise.

“We’re pretty much on track and we’re just running around doing the odd mop-up delivery.

I’m confident we’ll be ready to roll on Friday morning,” he said.

Bins were delivered over the past few weeks and drivers have been on the road in collection trucks this week, getting to know their routes.

The first collection day will be in the Hampstead and Netherby area and for most households this will be on their normal collection day. A cluster of homes in the area from Beach Road towards the Ashburton River and east of Chalmers Avenue will also now be included in Friday collections, Goodwin said.

Alleged drink-driver – I was not driving A 22-year-old Mid Canterbury man charged with drink driving and careless driving has been given time to call medical professionals to help him defend the charges.

Dominic Jordon Tumai remembers nothing of the accident on Upper Downs Road on September 11 last year, but police say he was behind the wheel of a vehicle that crashed.

They had two other witnesses also prepared to say Tumai was the driver when the case was called in the Ashburton District Court on Tuesday.

Tumai is pleading not guilty on the basis of medical notes made

by Ashburton Hospital staff about bruising to his left shoulder and neck.

The inference is that the bruising is from a seatbelt, indicating he would have been in the front passenger seat.

Tumai’s legal team wanted to admit the notes as evidence but Judge Joanna Maze said that would not give the police a chance to cross examine on what was the most important part of the defence case.

She adjourned the defended hearing to November 27 to allow time for the doctors and other medical professionals to be contacted.

Tumai is charged with driving with excess blood alcohol (217 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood) and careless driving on Upper Downs Road, near Mt Somers.

The service might be new to Ashburton, but contractor Envirowaste had rolled out wheelie bins in dozens of towns and cities around New Zealand. An Auckland roll-out is running concurrently with the Ashburton one.

“It’s bread and butter to these guys, they know exactly what they’re doing.”

Trailers stolen from Mitre 10 Mega

Prison guards injured in attack

Mitre 10 Mega staff are halfway to recovering two trailers pinched from their store at the start of this week.

Thieves armed with bolt cutters entered the store’s carpark late on Monday night, and took off with the two brand new trailers.

After Talbot Security Group put up a Facebook post about the theft, one trailer was located on the side of a country road on Tuesday night.

The trailer was still in working order, with no damage.

Mitre 10 Mega owner Simon Lye said staff had expected not to see the trailers again.

“To get a call saying one had been found was just tremendous,” he said.

“Talbot security have just done a fantastic job.”

While the location of the second trailer is still unknown, Ashburton police and Talbot Security Group are working to identify the burglars, with the help of surveillance camera footage.

Lye said it seemed like a calculated robbery, and the thieves were “quite professional” in their execution of the trailer theft.

It was the first time a trailer had been stolen from Ashburton Mitre 10 Mega.

Police said although trailers are an uncommon target, they receive reports of theft “from time to time”.

“We suggest that where possible, residents should store their trailers in a garage or up a driveway so they are out of sight of opportunistic thieves.”

They recommended reporting any robberies quickly to help with investigation and prevention of further theft.

Two guards have been injured in an attack at Auckland’s Paremoremo Prison.

Prison Director Andy Langley said a prisoner assaulted two staff members at Auckland Prison on Tuesday, leaving one staff member with minor facial injuries and damaged teeth and another with scratches.

“The staff acted quickly to ensure that the prisoner was restrained, and prevented further harm.

He said the prisoner involved was placed on directed segregation and later relocated within the prison.

“Police have been informed, and we’ll assist their investigation however we can.

“Our thoughts are with the staff affected and we will continue to offer them support as required.”

He said violence is not tolerated in the prison under any circumstances.

Centre completion in sight

When it opens its doors towards the end of this year, the Allenton Medical Centre will break new ground in Ashburton.

The multi-disciplinary centre will bring together two medical practices, Allenton Medical Centre and the Gym Company Medical, and will ultimately offer patients a range of health-related services.

Spokesman for the group, Malcolm Wootton said the centre’s completion date was still not set in concrete, but it was likely to be some time in November.

“We’re looking forward to being in there and our builders are doing an awesome job,” he said.

The new centre would see two practices blending services and personnel and that meant there would be a settling-in period before decisions were made on what additional services would be made available to patients, Wootton said.

“But we do have a tick-list of items we wish to develop, some opportunities and some ideas.

Forecast gives Houston hope With its flood defences strained, the crippled city of Houston anxiously watched dams and levees Tuesday to see if they would hold until the rain stops, and meteorologists offered the first reason for hope – a forecast with less than an inch of rain and even a chance for sunshine.

The human toll continued to mount, both in deaths and in the ever-swelling number of scared people made homeless by the catastrophic storm that is now the heaviest tropical downpour in US history.

The city’s largest shelter was overflowing when the mayor announced plans to create space for thousands of extra people by opening two and possibly three more megashelters.

The rescues went on. Federal and local agencies said they had lifted more than 13,000 people out of the floodwaters in the Houston area and surrounding cities and counties.

Meteorologists said the sprawling city would soon get a chance to dry out.

Harvey will spend much of Wednesday dropping rain on Louisiana before moving on to Arkansas, Tennessee and parts of Missouri, which could also see flooding.

The National Weather Service predicted less of an inch of rain for Houston on Thursday and only a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms for Friday. Saturday’s forecast called for mostly sunny skies.

In all, more than 17,000 people have sought refuge in Texas shelters, and that number

seemed certain to increase, the American Red Cross said.

Four days after the storm ravaged the Texas coastline as a hurricane, authorities and family members have reported more than a dozen deaths from Harvey.

Authorities acknowledge that fatalities from Harvey could soar once the floodwaters start to recede from one of America’s largest metropolitan centres.

A pair of 70-year-old reservoir dams that protect downtown Houston and a levee in

a suburban subdivision began overflowing Wednesday, adding to the rising floodwaters.

Officials in Houston were also keeping an eye on infrastructure such as bridges, roads and pipelines that are in the path of the floodwaters.

During a visit to the storm zone, President Donald Trump kept his distance from the epicentre of the damage in Houston to avoid disrupting recovery operations.

After five consecutive days of rain, Harvey set a new continental US record for rainfall for a tropical system.

The rains in Cedar Bayou, Texas, totalled 1.32 meters as of Tuesday afternoon. That’s a record for both Texas and the continental United States.

Before it breaks up, Harvey could creep as far east as Mississippi by Friday, meaning New Orleans, where Hurricane Katrina unleashed its full wrath in 2005, is in Harvey’s path.

The disaster is unfolding on an epic scale, with the nation’s fourth-largest city mostly paralysed by the storm that arrived as a Category 4 hurricane and then parked over the Gulf Coast.

Extra security for concert When Ariana Grande performs in Auckland on Saturday, she’ll be onstage in front of a huge crowd without a single bag between them. Strict security measures have been announced for the Problem hitmaker’s first ever New Zealand concert that may cause some inconvenience – especially to ticketbuyers who haven’t gotten the message.

Grande’s safety measures follow a suicide bombing at a concert she held in Manchester earlier this year that killed 23 people. “NO BAGS of any size will be allowed into the arena,” Spark Arena said on its website. Spark Arena also said that no cameras of any sort will be allowed.

Anti-gay marriage advert airs in Australia An advertisement promoting a no vote in the gay marriage postal survey has aired on television featuring three mothers highlighting their concerns about how the law changes will effect what is taught and promoted in schools.

The Coalition for Marriage ad has been criticised by Labour leader Bill Shorten for being offensive and hurtful, while social media users have

slammed it for scaremongering in schools.

One of the women featured on the commercial tells viewers her son had been told he could wear a dress to school next year if he wanted to, while another said Year 7 students were being encouraged to role-play being in a same-sex relationship.

“Her essential legacy is her children and the fact is that they have become known more as her children than as his, in the sense that the charity work they are doing resonates with what she was doing – difficult issues like mental health,” Diana biographer Andrew Morton said. “So she has a living legacy.”

Morton’s 1992 book about Diana revealed the depth of her despair: her struggle with a serious eating disorder, attempts at self-harm, and what he calls the “deep unhappiness” of her union with Charles, which ended in a bitter divorce in 1996.

Many saw Diana as a young mother wronged by a privileged older husband’s refusal to give up his lifelong mistress.

Many felt they could relate to her when she recounted her own battles with bulimia and talked openly of her disappointment and loneliness.

Some remember her for bringing a refreshing informality to the royal family.

Carol Meredith, a nurse who recently visited the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park with her husband, said that in the past senior royals would have had the amusement park cleared so they could enjoy it without mingling with the public.

Today, she said, the royals aren’t like that.

Be realistic over ‘clean and green’ Matt Markham

here’s a time when a good thing can simply become too much.

The thought of us becoming a clean and green New Zealand is a wonderful thing and something we should most definitely strive to achieve.

But there’s a harsh reality to it too, that to be completely clean and green is almost impossible and it’s unlikely we will see it in our lifetime.

There’s just too much to be done. And there’s not enough time in which to do it.

So, we need to make the little changes and do it all step by step.

And there’s a requirement to be aware of the situation around us when we make these decisions.

Schools are looking at rubbish-free lunchboxes.

So, we are now not just made to fill healthy lunchboxes – you know the ones, where if you sneak a chocolate biscuit or two into your child’s lunch that you get frowned at – we are also now asking our parents to ensure that there is no rubbish left once the mouths of their little ones have finished their feast.

No chip wrappers, no sandwich coverings, no museli bar wraps either.

Of course all of these can still be offered, but without the remnants of its original housing being left behind.

Stale sandwiches and chips and soggy everything else. No thanks.

There is the option of buying the little convenient containers, but currently that is an expense that some families just cannot afford.

So we need to be realistic.

Striving to be clean and green is great.

But pushing too much will only create more issues.

Mid Canty DairyNZ director steps down When Mid Canterbury dairy farmer Alister Body became a DairyNZ director 12 years ago, it was a desire to be part of industry decision-making that got him there.

Now preparing to move on in October, Body hopes other dairy farmers will put themselves forward for the “fantastic job”.

Two positions on DairyNZ’s Board of Directors are currently up for election, including Body’s role, with farmer nominations being taken until noon on Friday, September 8.

As DairyNZ’s longest-standing elected director, Body has had a front-row seat as New Zealand dairy farming has grown into a world-leading industry for producing food.

In 12 years, the industry has changed significantly – increasing from an average 322 cow herd to 419, while the national milking herd has grown from 3.8 million to 5 million cows. And where the North Island once dominated with 69 per cent of milk production, now the south is catching up with 43 per cent.

It’s these changes, and the aligned need for sustainable farm systems, that has kept Body motivated in working for dairy farmers through industry good body, DairyNZ. “The industry has grown incredibly and so has DairyNZ. There has been a tremendous increase in the demands on farmers over those years – and DairyNZ has a key role in supporting

And his enthusiasm hasn’t waned one bit as he’s worked with seven other directors in navigating the industry’s future.

A highlight in his role turned out to be the successful merger of Dairy Insight with Dexcel (which

undertook work funded by Dairy Insight).

“There were two organisations for industry good and it was believed putting them together would be better for farmers by being more efficient and effective.”

He said DairyNZ has done just that – with an impressive breadth of work now covered off for levypaying dairy farmers.

In his time, Body has also clocked up roles as chair of the Dairy Environment Leaders Group, the former Human Capability Leadership Group and the newly-formed Canterbury Dairy Leaders Group. He is also a Pastoral Genomics board member.

Body will continue as Ashburton Trading Society (RuralCo NZ) chairman and pursue other opportunities in governance.

DairyNZ chairman Michael Spaans said Body’s industry experience and common sense around the board table had been invaluable.

“Alister has always had dairy farmers at heart and understood the impact DairyNZ can have for them, which has added value for levy payers.

“Being the only South Island director also gave us a great connection to Canterbury, along with his drive to expand our role in Southland.

“The board thanks him for contributing to DairyNZ’s direction on behalf of dairy farmers, and wish him all the best for future.”

Trying to find common ground between country and town Colin Williscroft

T

he rural/urban divide shows no signs of closing.

In fact, it’s in danger of becoming a chasm.

It’s been noticeable in recent years that as the New Zealand population becomes increasingly urbanised and farming becomes increasingly intensified, the previous level of understanding that existed between the two sectors has become increasingly fractured.

In the past couple of weeks that division has become even wider. As soon as the idea of a water tax was floated, the battle lines were drawn.

Farmers and those who operate businesses downstream of them, which in an area like Mid Canterbury would be most of the population in one way or another, said the cost would be too much to bear.

They also questioned why they were being targeted when other, seemingly urban businesses were not, and why a link had been made between pollution and irrigation, when there was none.

On the other side of the fence, city folk, sick of what they perceive as farmers’ lack of effort towards preserving the quality of

Those farmers had had things good for too long, was the prevailing opinion, and it was time for reality to set in.

It seems that there’s very little

middle ground between the two sides – and that’s increasingly the case when it comes to farming’s impact on the environment, in particular water.

Unfortunately for the farming community, not only have they lost control of their side of that conversation, it’s actually been hijacked by others.

Farmers need to reclaim some

control of their message, which is being lost, and package it in a way that is more understandable to those who would view much of it as a foreign language.

One way to do that is to demonstrate that there is common ground among those who live in rural areas and those who live in cities. That it’s not a case of them and us.

So it was interesting last week that the Farming Leaders Group, which was formed earlier this year, publically committed the pastoral sector, which represents more than 80 per cent of farmed land in New Zealand, to work harder to ensure New Zealand rivers are swimmable for their children and grandchildren.

In a way helping to ensure what has become known as a national birthright – something dear to the hearts of pretty much everyone – is not lost.

The group’s spokeswoman, Federated Farmers’ president Katie Milne, went further, saying: “We’re standing up and saying we haven’t always got this right.

More work is required and we will play our part. While there has been progress on-farm in the last 10 years, we know there is more to be done, and that it must be done fast, and together.”

It’s that last word that’s important. Not only does it say farmers will work in unison, there’s an implication that as a nation, we’re all in this together. That there is a common goal.

It’s well known that if you can get different people working as a team it can help when it comes to understanding and appreciating others’ viewpoints.

While that won’t be a silver bullet to re-uniting city and country, it’s a pretty good place to start.

More infected properties identified Three new properties have tested positive for the bacterial cattle disease mycoplasma bovis.

“All three properties have links to existing infected properties and this is an entirely expected pattern at this stage of the response,” Ministry for Primary Industries response co-ordinator David Yard said.

These latest detections bring the total number of infected farms to

six. “We fully expect to find more infected properties as we continue our tracing and testing programme. These detections are evidence of the programme working, not of unexpected disease spread,” Yard said.

“All detections to date have links to the original infected properties via animal movements and have been caused by close animal contact.

“We have no evidence of any means of disease spread other than close animal contact, at this stage. This includes the disease having jumped fences – which our scientists and vets tell us is highly unlikely to occur.”

Two of the newly-identified properties are Van Leeuwen Dairy Group farms and were already under restricted place notices under the Biosecurity Act.

The third property was a trace farm that had received a small number of calves from the third infected farm confirmed last week.

The property is a lifestyle block near Rangiora.

Yard said MPI was continuing its policy of not naming the affected properties if the owners did not want to be named. “MPI is prevented from doing otherwise by the Privacy Act. However,

we do understand community concern about the disease and we are strongly encouraging farmers under controls or investigation to talk to their neighbours, customers and suppliers.”

Yard said MPI was also contacting farms where there was a higher risk of the disease being present – because they were adjacent to infected properties or were connected through animal movements.

Wheeler: ‘prospects look promising’

By Jonathan Underhill Reserve Bank governor Graeme Wheeler said “the prospects look promising” for continued robust economic growth in New Zealand over the next two years and the greatest risks are from “inflated global asset prices and the continuing build up in global debt”.

Wheeler made the comments in what is his last scheduled speech as governor. He told the Northern Club in Auckland that if growth in the global economy slows, “we have some scope to buffer our economy”.

“We’ve greater room for monetary policy manoeuvre than central banks in many advanced economies,” he said in speech notes.

“Our official cash rate is 1.75 per cent – above the zero and negative interest rates of several advanced country central banks – and the bank has not grossed up its balance sheet by buying domestic assets. With a budget surplus and low net debt relative to GDP, there’s also flexibility on the fiscal policy side.”

Reserve Bank governor Graeme Wheeler Wheeler said a lower New Zealand dollar “is needed to increase tradables inflation and help deliver more balanced growth”.

“To a large extent the high exchange rate reflects the favourable performance of the economy, the high terms of trade, and weakness in the US dollar,” he said.

He said loan-to-value restrictions on mortgage lending “have reduced financial stability risks as house prices became increasingly stretched” but LVRs aren’t expected to be a permanent measure.

Building consents lower in July New Zealand residential building consents fell in July, with the biggest decreases coming from Auckland, although more standalone houses were consented.

Some 2762 new houses, apartments, townhouses, retirement village units and flats were consented in July, down 1.7 per cent from a year earlier.

Of that total, 1900 houses were consented, up 7.9 per cent from July 2016, while consents for apartments fell 14 per cent to 367 and consents for townhouses, flats and units dropped 20 per cent to 350.

Retirement village unit consents declined 23 per cent to 145.

Still, 30,404 were consented in

the year ended July 30, up 4.5 per cent from the previous year, Statistics NZ said yesterday.

“Auckland region had the largest fall in July 2017, with 313 fewer new homes consented compared with July 2016 (down 29 per cent to 774 new homes consented),” Stats NZ said.

“The fall was driven by decreases in the volatile apartment and townhouse categories. Auckland’s numbers are quite volatile because almost half the homes consented are in multi-unit projects.

“On average, the region currently consents over 800 new homes a month.”

“In seasonally adjusted terms,

dwelling consents fell 0.7 per cent on the month in July after dropping 1 per cent in June.”

New Zealand’s housing market has been on a tear with demand outstripping supply and pushing up values.

In Auckland, the country’s largest city, the lack of housing supply has been most acute as record migration drives demand.

Including alterations, $1.8 billion of building work was consented in the month of July, Stats NZ said.

That included $1.2 billion worth of residential buildings and $576 million for non-residential buildings.

Allied Farmers lifts net profit Rural services firm Allied Farmers reported a 60 per cent lift in net profit on an improved result from its livestock division, particularly in the second half, and further cost reduction.

The Hawera-based company said net profit was $2.2 million in the year ended June 30 versus $1.4 million in the prior year. Pretax earnings were up 52 per cent to $2.4 million, which was ahead of the guidance it gave in June when it forecast a 40 per cent gain.

Its livestock division reported a 20 per cent increase in earnings before tax to $2.7 million. Livestock sales performed well with commissions up 25 per cent on the prior year, particularly in the second half due to higher levels of dairy herd sales, it said.

It noted, however, returns from

the meat processing business were lower than the previous period. While volumes were consistent, turnover was 20 per cent lower due to the impact of a decline in international prices for veal and skins.

During the year, its livestock division established a livestock financing unit, initially focused on financing service bulls but then expanding into other livestock financing. While it started from a low business, the business is already profitable, it said.

The company said it cut its corporate costs by 46 per cent to $45,000 from $83,000.

It also reduced its debt costs, replacing $600,00 of maturing bonds with a $550,000 three-year bond at a substantially reduced interest rate. In addition, holders

of $1 million of bonds maturing in September have all agreed to roll them over for a further four-year term, also at a reduced interest rate.

“We are delighted at this vote of confidence from the bondholders,” said chairman Garry Bluett.

He noted the strong result for the 2017 financial year made it possible to negotiate improved terms.

Looking ahead, the company said its expectations for the current year are for “careful growth” in the livestock business, tempered with a flat outlook for the meat processing business as overseas prices remain low.

Allied Farmers shares last traded at 9.4 cents and are up 62 per cent over the past 12 months.

Low-down on growing spuds Not so many years ago every quarter-acre section boasted a large potato patch to feed the family. As a tasty, versatile and affordable addition to any meal, it just made sense to grow your own. But as property sizes shrunk, the demand for growing your own spuds also diminished.

And main crop potatoes need longer in the ground and should be left in until the tops die back in autumn before harvest.

They will be larger, thick-skinned and also keep well.

If you want to ensure you’re serving home-grown spuds at Christmas, plant early potatoes such as Rocket, Swift, Jersey Benne or Cliff Kidney. These ones can be harvested after about 90 days so, if planted in September, will be ready for Christmas.

Potatoes also vary in their make-up.

Some are called ‘waxy’ potatoes and these are lower in starch and hold together much better when cooking – they are more suitable for salads, boiling and casseroles. Others varieties are called ‘floury’ potatoes and these ones are higher in starch and ideal for wedges, chips, roasting and mashing. The earlier potatoes tend to be more the waxy types and the later varieties more floury.

If you’re looking for a general purpose potato, try Desiree or Rua – these are suitable for most uses.

Once purchased, remove your seed potatoes from the bag or container and leave them in a light, dry place for a few weeks so they can start to shoot.

A garage bench or garden shed is ideal.

When the potato shoots are approximately 2cm long they’re ready to plant. Before doing so, work in some compost to the soil to make it more friable and easier for the potatoes to grow, as well as easier for you to harvest.

So, where to start? With quality certified seed potatoes. Seed potatoes look just like regular potatoes but are usually smaller, and are certified free of disease, so you know you’re getting the best start.

You don’t need to fill the trench back up at this stage, just cover the planted potatoes with at least 5cm of soil. New spuds hate Jack Frost, so keep an eye on them and as the shoots start to push through, cover them a little more each week until you have turned your trench into a mound of 15-20cm in height after six to eight weeks.

The more growing stem beneath the soil, the more opportunity for the plant to produce potatoes and the bigger your crop.

To keep diseases away, don’t overhead water your potatoes excessively. Once planted the rain should be enough to keep them going until they’re ready for harvesting.

Lastly, once you’ve harvested your potatoes, dig the plant back into the ground. The top growth has plenty of good nutrients in it and working it into the soil helps to improve the soil structure in the same way that adding compost does.

The netting is a perfect non-spray method to ensure your potatoes stay healthy and yield a great crop.

The best way to tell if your potatoes are ready is to ‘tickle’ a few up to check. Royal tours in the early days of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign were drawn-out affairs, with her first to New Zealand seeing her travel the length of the country over about five weeks.

She arrived in Auckland on Wednesday, December 23, 1953 and left on January 31. During her stay she visited dozens of towns and cities and spent three nights in the Ashburton District, staying at the Longbeach homestead.

The Queen arrived in Ashburton on January 22, 1954, and was greeted by a huge crowd in the

Ashburton Domain. During her walkabout she was escorted by Ashburton Mayor Ernest Bathurst.

During her time in the district she also visited the Winchmore Research Station and attended a church service at Longbeach.

This visit marked the first by a reigning monarch to New Zealand. Previous royal visitors had been sons or brothers of the monarch: Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh in 1869, Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York in 1901, Prince of Wales in 1920, Duke and Duchess of York in 1927 and Duke

QUICK MEAL

Chicken, courgettes and lemon penne Serves 3-4 200g penne pasta 15g butter 1 clove garlic, crushed 2 courgettes, coarsely grated Meal Maker Sliced Roast Chicken 320g, cut into strips 1t finely-grated lemon zest 2T lemon juice 2 spring onions, sliced 2T chopped fresh parsley Freshly ground black pepper ■ Cook the penne following the instructions on the pack.

■ Heat the butter in a frying pan.

Add the garlic and courgettes, cook over medium heat for 5 minutes or until golden. Add the Meal Maker Sliced Roast Chicken 320g, lemon zest, lemon juice and spring onions and cook over low heat, stirring, until the chicken is heated through.

Ashburton County Lions At the August meeting of the Ashburton County Lions Club members had the opportunity to listen to the adventures of Michael Baker at the recent Berwick Outdoor Experience. The club had sponsored Michael to attend and while he was often pushed outside his comfort zone by some of the physical challenges the positive aspects were very evident. He spoke about how it had given him the opportunity to develop leadership skills, grow his confidence when working as part of a team, improve his public speaking ability and to generally develop a greater understanding of himself and his abilities.

Michael is now taking these new skills out into the community by getting involved in sports coaching and umpiring. It is to be hoped that his experiences and positive attitude will encourage more young people to take up this opportunity in the future.

Club members were then updated with preparations for the raffle to be held this month to support ‘Camp Quality’. These camps are held annually to support young people dealing with living with cancer so please look out for our raffle sellers and support this worthy cause.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club President Lion Joe Butchard welcomed members and partners to the August meeting held in the MSA Restaurant. A number of apologies were received which were mostly due to winter ailments.

Lion Bob Rogers expressed thanks to those who had assisted with Daffodil Day street collection for Cancer and requested volunteers for the Arthritis Appeal. A reminder was given that Pakeke would have a stall on Boulevard Day and saleable goods would be welcomed.

An invitation to the Methven Lions Anniversary was received.

Lion Noel Lowe introduced the guest and speaker for the evening, Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel who gave us a potted history on her maternal ancestry and how the family became settlers in early Christchurch before eventually settling into the Hinds area of Mid Canterbury.

From those beginnings and some years later, Donna’s own family settled in Ashburton where she was educated and grew up.

Following a period in Australia she returned vice to the club. Nicky Kelly received the Lloyd Morgan Honoured Membership Award for 10 years of service as our bulletin editor, Ann Smith received a membership badge recognising 25 years of service and Cynthia Young received a Gold Centennial Membership Growth Award.

Ashburton Horticultural Society President Joy Jaine welcomed 16 members to the first meeting of the season, this was followed by the 127th AGM. Awards were presented by David Askin who also spoke of his recent journey through England and France and showed photos of some lovely floral displays. We look forward to hearing more at a later date! Officers were elected as follows: Patron Graham Gunn, President Trevor Gamblin, Vice President Allan Johnstone, Secretary Noella Talbot, Treasurer Rosemary Case. Norm McDowell was made a Life Member Outgoing Officers Joy Jaine (President) and Rosemary Case (Secretary) were thanked.

Trophies were presented to Pat Tarbotton (Lloyd Trophy), Shona Thomas (Williams, Chrysanthemum Trophies) and Rosemary Case (Murdoch Trophy).

The last of the championships events have been played recently, these being both fours events and played in a round robin format. The first being the Centennial Shield Championship Fours where the Willowby combination of Ken Mackenzie, Graeme Chapman, Rowena Mackenzie and Neill Chapman came out on top to take the title!

In the Open Championship Fours, the husband and wife combinations of Geoff and Bernice Laird playing with Maurice and Ann Sunbeam proved too strong for the other competing teams, winning the event with a strong performance on the day! This gives Ann Sunbeam her first centre title!

Mayor Donna then gave a presentation on the conclusions and analysis of the latest residents’ survey from which the council will use when determining long term plans. The key results varied from high satisfaction to where improvements can be made on service delivery in the district. The number of questions followed indicated that members were interested in our council’s performance. A table quiz on Ashburton’s history had us all trying to recall facts and how much we can remember.

Vice-President Ron reported that the fish pond project had been completed and good dry wood had been prepared for Boulevard Day. Lion Noel advised on a film evening possibility on September 14 and a garden walk in November. Lion Noel inducted a new member Lion Trevor Andrews, sponsored by Lion Peter O’Neill.

Next Ladies Craft morning will be at Edith Paterson’s home on September 11.

Two Representative fixtures have been decided.

The first one being against Canterbury where at the half way stage of the event it was a very even contest, but in the afternoon Canterbury showed their class to win 103pts to Ashburtons 65pts.

Ashburton has also played Geraldine/Temuka in the latest representative fixture, where Ashburton had six new players representing the district for the first time! Those being Tom Palatchi, Winston Cochrane, Georgina Black, Selwyn Munro, Ken Johnston and Richard Smitheram. The Ashburton team on the night put on a great performance to come out victorious with 14 wins, 2 draws and 8 losses!

The Aggregate Shield has been competed for recently, with eight clubs participating in the event! A singles, pairs and fours combination from each club make up this event. The Willowby Club proved too good on the night winning 8 games from 9! Second was MSA with 7 wins. Third was Carew with 6 wins.

The Doak Mixed Pairs event has been played and won by Mark Sheard and Jenny Nordqvist, who defeated Neil Atkinson and Joan Hardy in the final!

Ashburton Ladies Friendship Club The August meeting was on Wednesday 23 at 9-45am in the Doris Linton Lounge of the RSA presided over by Bev Gregory.

Elizabeth Davies reported on a thrilling bus ride up to Mount Hutt ski field on a joint Ashburton Friendship Clubs outing.

Mini-speaker Pauline Hood described a recent bus tour of Croatia, including the Island Havar offshore in the Adriatic Sea. Great grand farther Vucetich lived there before emigrating to New Zealand in the 1860’s.

Zagreb is the inland capital city, but the 1777km coastline is dotted with 1246 islands. The bus tour started at the birth-place of Marshall Tito, born Josef Broz in 1892. He was the communist statesman who united and led Yugoslavia for 35 years. Now it has broken up into several countries and a passport is required to cross the borders from Croatia into Slovenia, Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro.

Pauline and her husband appreciated the beauty and ancient buildings and the modern roads built with funding after Croatia joined the EU in 2013.

Old Roman towns along the coast at Pula and Split are impressive and there are many church buildings

as 89% of the population are Roman Catholic. Tension over the Bosnia conflict is still palpable as they witnesses a bus-load of Kosova (Serb) travellers ordered off a bus to be searched. Croatia itself is a peaceful country and it is becoming increasingly popular as a tourist destination.

The main speaker was Tinwald School principal Peter Livingstone. He began by asking what we thought a “Millennium Blonde” might be. Then proceeded to describe important older women in his life.

“Distant Nana” was his paternal grandmother who lived in Auckland. When Peter`s family made a toll call to her they lined up on chronological order and allotted two minutes each. The family travelled to Auckland to visit Nana and the children were surprised to see Nana was tiny, only 4ft 11 ins high.

Nana`s car was adapted to accommodate her, with blocks of wood attached to the pedals and a booster seat. A home sewer, singlets were lovingly made for her grand-children. This Nana spent many years caring for a sick husband. A quiet women she never expressed an opinion on anything.

In contrast was nearby Nana, Peter’s maternal grandmother. She had strong opinions and voiced them. Although not a car driver she freely gave advice to whoever was the driver. Baking cakes and cooking meals for large family gatherings were no trouble. Carving knives were kept shining sharp.

One day Nana dropped a knife into her foot, she pulled it out and just kept on carving and talking.

Staunch!

Peter is a great raconteur. His humorous anecdotes had us in stiches from laughter. He ended his talk by saying that we should not under-estimate our importance to our families and that as matriarchs we have the right to pass on our family stories.

Ashburton Woodworkers Merv Peck welcomes 23 members to our August meeting with a special welcome to demonstrator Peter Clemett, from Christchurch, who is also the South Island National Association of Woodworkers representative.

Merv mentioned the upcoming Boulevard day, where the club will have a stall requiring assistance.

Ideas needed to disguise the electrical transformer to the entrance to the Plains Museum Complex.

His professional use of tools quickly produced the finished item these could be left natural or painted.

This is something that all members could easily do themselves. He then created an icicle shaped ornament with a long taper. With some imagination these could be painted to your desire.

A simple demonstration will certainly inspire us to duplicate.

Coronation/Phoenix Target shooting clubs So, that’s it then? Only a couple of postal matches to finish off and we can rule a line under the 2017 indoor season and start preparations for the 2018 season. Some of our members will no doubt be keen to have a go on the new outdoor 50m range over the summer. Steve McArthur is President of the newly formed Ashburton outdoor club and after his very successful indoor season will be keen to promote and continue his good form. At the recent North Island v South Island Steve was 2nd top scorer over the whole Country with 297.27/300.30 with the top scorer Helen Frieman of Manawatu on 298.23. Steve will forever rue the 1 point penalty which cost him the top position. Congratulations to our members who secured medals in the National Indoor Championships Lanelle McArthur silver in A grade, Michaela Smith Gold in C grade and Shania Harrison-Lee Gold in D grade. However all this success at top level starts at the club level and recent scores bode well for the future. Keith Bonnington, Colin Taylor, Kim Fokkema, Nick Stewart and Mark Stewart already stand out as likely Inter-Island candidates for next year. The selectors are already on the lookout. Individual scores for the last club night were; Morgan Smith 92.2, Keith Bonnington 98.5, 96.0, T.J. Team wins after losing on purpose It is a game in which fair play is still held in high regard and a certain type of behaviour is expected on and off the pitch.

So when Carew Cricket Club ensured they won their local county championship simply by denying the opposition the opportunity to accumulate extra points condemnation was swift and forthright.

In order to become champions of division one of the Pembroke County Cricket Club the team, based on the edge of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, forced the deciding game to an early close.

By declaring an end to their innings after less than three overs, with a score of 18 runs for one wicket, Carew prevented their rivals Cresselly from scoring more than 40 runs or taking more than one wicket.

That meant that although Cresselly won easily by scoring 24 for one, there was no opportunity for them to accumulate the bonus points required to overtake Carew in the league.

While Carew’s legal if rather underhand tactics may have won

them the championship they earned the opprobrium of cricket lovers.

Steve James, who played for England and captained Glamorgan, said that the club’s attitude was shocking.

“It’s against the spirit of the game, Unfortunately it’s within the rules of that game.

“I can’t think that anyone in the Carew team would have wanted to win that way. If I had been in that team I wouldn’t have been able to celebrate,” he said.

Gareth Rees, another former Glamorgan cricketer, tweeted: “Just heard what happened in the Pembs league today. What an embarrassment from Carew Club shocking behaviour.”

A photograph of their victorious team posted on Twitter by Carew Cricket Club also drew a barrage of critical comments.

Cresselly made clear their disappointment with Carew’s behaviour, saying in a statement that the club “felt hard done by at not being able to play a proper game” to decide the winner of the division.

Cresselly said that it had expected Carew to “want to beat us the right way and show everyone they are indeed the very best” and that the decision to lose on purpose “was at odds with their title of champions of the county”.

The statement added: “We are disappointed for our supporters some who travelled quite a few hours to watch what should have been a top game and also people who took time off work to play and to watch.”

Richard Merriman, vice-chairman of Pembroke County CC, said he could not comment on the matter until the general meeting of the club in February.

Carew were not available for comment.

CLUB NEWS CONTINUED Creative Fibre – Ashburton The meeting was held at the A&P Showgrounds on Monday 21, 20 ladies were present.

The Open Day held the week before, but because of the heavy rain, numbers present were down but for those present there were plenty of interesting exhibits to see. A great Peruvian weaver was present and he was able to share his knowledge and admire our work.

Life memberships were given to Wilma Wolfrey and Patricia McLaren. 7 members went to a Woolcraft weekend at Glen Tui and came back enthused.

Back to Basics at the New Life Church had our participation and young mums were encouraged to join our group. Before the end of the year we will lose 2 valuable members Pauline Stewart and Annette McIntyre.

The Staveley week of craft work is to be held September 4-8. Day visitors are encouraged to come on Wednesday. May Greenslade was presented with a special award from Life Education Trust.

Plains Ladies Friendship Club Eighty-two Members, friends and representatives from the other Ashburton Friendship Clubs gathered at the Doris Hinton Lounge at the RSA Rooms on Monday August 28 to help the Plains Ladies Fellowship Club celebrate their 25th Birthday.

Vera Smollett welcomed everyone and conducted a small amount of official business before inviting Joan Moore and Noeline Murdock who were foundation members to cut the birthday cake. As the candles were lit we remembered all those who had served in the club since 1992 as the Probus Club and hope that all who continue in the club under its new name will continue to enjoy Fun, Fellowship and Friendship.

Audrey Lowe reported on the very successful joint clubs trip up to Mt Hutt ,The Combined Clubs Luncheon at the Japanese restaurant, the combined Church service at St Stephens on 8th October and encouraged members to sign up for the trip to Christchurch on September 21.

Our mini-speaker was Janet McNally from Riding for the Disabled who told us that it is an International organisation whose Patron is Princess Anne.

It has been going for 55yrs and there are 50 groups in NZ. Mid -Canterbury has been going for 43 years, we are lucky to have such a well-resourced facility and it is very rewarding to see how much benefit

the children get from their time there. If it was not for the dedication of the volunteers this would not happen.

We all enjoyed a piece of Birthday cake for morning tea.

After that Danny Lysaght entertained us with ‘ Monday Morning Musical Madness’. He is an accomplished musician having played since he was 5yrs old. He played on a 25yr old Technic electronic organ and played a variety of musical numbers that we all could remember and relate too. Anne Marsden thanked him for entertaining us.

Rosemarie Shaw from Friendship NZ Incorporated Society presented a Certificate congratulating the club on its 25th birthday and then joined us for a lovely lunch in the RSA rooms.

RSA Women’s Section President Colleen Hands welcomed a good attendance of members on Thursday August 24. Apologies were received.

Peter, who likes playing the grand piano played while the RSA Song was sung. Also Happy Birthday to members celebrating their special day.

Sympathy was given to anyone who has sadly lost a loved one. Sick members were wished a speedy recovery.

Next month Thursday September 28 will be our 72nd birthday. Temuka ladies have been invited.

Tinwald Garden Club Following a short business meeting, the day’s speaker was Pam Whiteford who gave a very interesting talk on “Herbs”. Her talk was based on four of the most common herbs - parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. For each herb she told us of its original location, its medicinal properties, how to grow it, its growing habits, and what its best uses are both in cooking and in the garden. There was considerable interest and many questions were asked.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE REPORTS Fairton For August, Chertsey/Pendarves WI hosted our Annual combined meeting which was held at Rosebank Community room.

Our Motto: “The time to make friends is before you need them” was read and the Roll Call calling for donations to the Alzheimer’s Society and Hospice Mid Canterbury was well responded to.

Guest speakers Jo and Michelle from the BNZ gave us information on how not to become a victim of scams which are many and varied and come from a lot of different sources.

Both ladies were thanked by Jackie Rollinson and presented with a gift.

Afternoon tea was served and with fellowship with our hosts, a very pleasant meeting concluded.

Hinds The Hinds WI met for their August meeting at Jo

Wilson’ home at Tinwald on a warm spring-like afternoon. A good attendance was welcomed by President Betty Wilson. The Ode and Aspirations was followed by the usual meeting procedure of apologies, previous minutes, finance, correspondence and general business.

Members were thanked for their help with Meals on Wheels and for donating 19 boxes of tissues and 33 cakes of soap which were distributed to Tuarangi Hospital and Ward 1 Ashburton Hospital. A food collection for “the seniors” at Hinds was also well supported.

A letter was received from the Ashburton St. John’s, thanking Hinds WI for the large donation toward the running of the shuttle service.

Arrangements were made for the Hinds September Flower Show and the A & P association Tray and Bay competitions.

We were fortunate to have Sharon from the Westpac Bank speak to us about banking; at the present

time and in the future. She knows her topic so well and was an inspirational and informative speaker.

Afternoon tea and fellowship concluded a very pleasant meeting.

Netherby President Pauline welcomed 22 members plus a new one to this August meeting. Our late member, Betty Dijker was remembered by members, the Aspirations being followed by the WI prayer.

The “Golden Threads” was conducted by Joan Campbell, this neatly tying in with our speaker Judy Swaney, her daughter.

Judy is a qualified Diversional Therapist who spoke of the work these dedicated people do to keep clients engaged so they can enjoy quality of life.

Our roll call – “Coins for Friendship” was responded to as was “Your favourite Day of the Week.” This month the raffle was won by Cora. The competitions resulted in Nancy winning both the North-

church trophy and the Moylan Trophy.

Wakanui Wakanui Women’s Institute’s July meeting was held at the Ashburton Heritage Centre, with ten members and one visitor present.

The Roll Call was an historic photo with information and names attached.

These were handed to the museum for a short time, the museum then taking copies for their own records.

The Museum staff member Kathleen Stringer gave us a tour of the building, starting at the back where they store and restore items, finishing our tour with the well displayed items out front.

Members were reminded of indoor bowls and the Mid Canterbury Federation Half-Yearly Meeting at McNally Street Stadium on Tuesday August 29.

The meeting then ended with afternoon tea being served.

Fern takes on the big boys Rugby players don’t come smaller than World Cup star Selica Winiata.

Imagine what the Manawatu Turbos men’s team thought when this 54kg pocket rocket turned up to train with them for the entire 2016 NPC season.

As the former international Melodie Robinson said after the World Cup final victory over England in Belfast, the Black Ferns are a team full of rich stories.

The 30-year-old fullback Winiata, who latched on to loose ball and scarpered 35 metres for the first try in the final, has a story which makes the grade.

Desperate to take her game to a new level, the brilliant runner – the New Zealand player of the year in 2016 – contacted the Manawatu men’s team, and was welcomed into the fold.

It involved becoming a full squad member in everything from contact training (with some slight concessions) to being part of the team announcements and analysis sessions.

“They were more than happy and I became part of the team, except I didn’t get selected for the games,” she says, while clutching the World Cup during a round of media interviews in Auckland.

“I knew a couple of the players and they made me feel part of the team straight away.

“Some of the players might have taken me a bit lightly at first but when I stepped them and scored a few times that changed, especially when the other boys gave them grief.”

Winiata’s approach may be a stepping stone to a more professional future for women’s rugby.

Then again, it may turn out to be about as far as professionalism in women’s 15s rugby gets.

There has been a mad scramble to define how the women’s game can progress, following the publicity surrounding the Black Ferns highly impressive fifth World Cup triumph.

At this point, all expenses are covered when the Black Ferns are together, and they are paid a small amount – so small that

Sevens rugby has an element of professionalism, being an Olympic sport. But there are no encouraging noises out of Rugby HQ for the 15s version.

Yet the feeling is that many players would love to find out how far they could take their skills with more full time training, and feel frustrated that there are so few test matches.

But how far can it go, and how will it get there? Will New Zealand Rugby grab the moment, push this as far as it can, or is there an element of tokenism to how they administer the women’s game.

Are the obstacles too great?

Vitally, semi-professionalism could interfere with the players’ other careers. And the men’s

NPC, a potential domestic blueprint, is hardly a thriving sports industry.

Winiata was tiring of the question about professionalism by the time I talked to her, largely because there are no obvious answers. She hopes the national union does talk to the players about future directions.

In her own case, Winiata took the bull by the horns, training about three times a week – sometimes twice a day – with the Turbos while holding down her job as a Palmerston North police constable. It also led to her joining training sessions with the Chiefs Super Rugby side.

Winiata decided early in her career to follow the example set by Black Ferns legend Farah Palmer, and remain in Manawatu rather than head for any big city rugby advantages.

She is in awe of Dr Palmer, an inspirational figure who

achieved high academic honours while also leading the allconquering Black Ferns.

But it’s when Winiata talked about the Black Ferns’ team ethos that I take extra notice.

It’s easy to get cynical in this age, dealing with sports stars who seem to trot out pre-conceived lines from a whiteboard.

When Winiata spoke, there was absolutely no doubt that it came from the heart, no money involved.

“When you put on the jersey, it’s like you get superpowers,” said Winiata, a tiny figure even in a normal sized chair.

“You are only a caretaker of the jersey. I want to make sure that when I leave my jersey, it is in a better place than when I picked it up.

“It’s about the legacy ... and what is embedded by what came before you. That is what makes it a unique team.”

Call for Clyne to quit Billionaire mining magnate Andrew Forrest has called on Cameron Clyne to resign, claiming the ARU chairman “lied” about the reasons he chose to axe the Western Force.

Forrest says he has stumbled across legal advice sent to the ARU board in February indicating the Force was the best Super Rugby team to cut because the legal risk was low. In the advice from the ARU management to the ARU board, it said axing either the Brumbies or Melbourne Rebels without cause would constitute an unlawful termination.

In brief Warner scores century Australia are closing in on victory over Bangladesh in the first Test in Dhaka, with David Warner racing to an inspired century to leave the visitors needing 99 runs to win.

Warner reached triple-figures early on day four before being trapped lbw by left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan on 112, with Australia 3-166 midway through the first session.

Warner instantly reviewed Aleem Dar’s decision but replays confirmed it was hitting middle and leg. After resuming at 75 not out, Warner needed just nine overs to banish his subcontinent demons and achieve his second test century on Asian soil.

Croquet season to kick off

As we approach the summer months, another sport is lined up to kick its season off.

The Waireka Croquet Club will be hosting an open day this Saturday, and looking for more people to join their ever growing club.

“We have 76 members and they range from 15 to late 80s, and we have grown every year,” club secretary Audrey Leath said.

“I started playing five or six years ago and we had about 30 members then and have grown considerably.”

The club offers two forms of

croquet, either association or golf. “Golf croquet is the much faster game, taking about half an hour normally, while association games can last up to two,” Leath said.

“Golf is the rugby sevens of croquet, just a lot less physical.”

Leath said it was also great to see the number of young play-

ers getting into the game, with a number of members attending Mount Hutt College and Ashburton College.

“If I had to say to someone why they should come down to give it a go, I would say it is a great physical activity in a nice, friendly social atmosphere and a great day out,” she said.

English football call on All Blacks’ guru The English national football team have turned to world champions Germany and the All Blacks in a bid to finally halt their dismal record at major tournaments.

As part of a memorandum of understanding signed by the Football Association and German FA (DFB) in March, discussions have taken place about how England’s arch-rivals prepare for World Cups and European Championships and their

set-up while they are playing at them.

Manager Gareth Southgate and his coaching team have also been working with a well-known advisor to the All Blacks, who are widely regarded as the best team in world sport.

Great Britain’s record-breaking Olympic team have been looked at as well, as part of a concerted effort by Southgate to learn about how other sports develop a winning culture.

The 46-year-old is determined to leave no stone unturned in his efforts to do the same with England, whose humiliating Euro 2016 exit at the hands of Iceland was the latest in a long line of flops at major tournaments dating back a decade.

Since Southgate took charge, every player called into the squad has been asked to watch a seven-minute film about what it takes to win, which begins with footage of his own penalty-

shootout miss in England’s Euro 96 defeat against Germany.

The FA’s MOU with the DFB, meanwhile, commenced on the day the countries met in a friendly in Dortmund, before which Southgate called for English football to emulate the German model of success.

Since then, the DFB has been consulted about its approach to World Cup and Euros, including the Germany teams’ relationship with the public and Press.

Turnaround test Kurtley Beale says the Wallabies’ performance against South Africa next week will determine if they really have turned the corner.

All Stars return to trials Leading New Zealand trainers Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen have yet to notch a winner this season, but their return from the world driving championships in Canada and a slew of stars having a hit-out at the Rangiora trials yesterday showed they won’t be long out of the winners’ circle.

The All Stars stable totalled 110 wins to seal the premiership last season for just over $4 million in stakes, with Robert Dunn on 87 wins and Greg and Nina Hope 83.

The All Stars produced fouryear-old mare Renske B to win her 2000m mobile heat yesterday in 2:27.9, a mile rate of 1:58.9, with her last 800m in 57.2sec.

She hasn’t raced since June last year when she ran some sound placings behind top fillies Spanish Armada and Delightful Memphis as a two-year-old.

American trotting import Aldebaran Eagle (six wins, $304,000) had his first public outing for the stable and won off 40m over 2600m in 3:30, the last 800m in 58.9.

Open-class pacers Have Faith In Me and Dream About Me ran a close-up second and third off 40m behind five-win pacer Imola over 2600m (stand), the winner clocking 3:19.7, with the last 800m in 58.

Gingernuts galloped at Matamata on Tuesday morning and received a favourable report from his race day rider Bosson.

“It was very foggy and he couldn’t be timed, but Opie was happy with him,” Richards said.

Federer looked more relieved than overjoyed when Tiafoe’s forehand found the net on match point to keep his hopes of a 20th grand slam title alive. Taking on the Aussies

In a few weeks 16-year-old Mitchell Stocker will be revving his motorcycle’s engine, ready to take on some of the best riders Australia has to offer.

Stocker was asked earlier this year if he wanted to join a group of New Zealanders travelling to the Australian Junior Motocross Championships, coming off a strong seventh-place finish at the New Zealand Junior Nationals.

His bike will be loaded into a

container along with the other bikes from seven other New Zealand competitors to be shipped to Australia for the competition, which will be held in the Victorian town of Horsham.

Between 500 to 600 riders will be attending the event, including the group of eight from New Zealand.

“I am quite excited,” Stocker said. “It will probably be more of an experience thing, but if I could finish top 15 to top 20 that would be great.”

It will be the first time com-

peting overseas for the 16-yearold, who only turned 16 on Saturday.

While it might seem like a case of getting a motorcycle and simply riding it, a lot more work has gone in to what Stocker will be hoping to tear up the competition on.

“We only just got the bike fully back together last night,” dad Shane said.

“We spent the full day down at Honda Country the other day tuning it on the dyno to make sure we are getting the most

power out if it we can.

“It isn’t that quick in a straight line, probably with a top speed of 120km/h, but the acceleration is rapid.”

Stocker has been riding motorcycles since he was three, with Shane saying the entire family gets involved.

“Cheryl handles all the gear and the cooking, I work on the bikes and Mitchell’s brother Callum also rides,” Shane said.

The championship starts on September 30 and will run until October 6.
