Baring Square east or west, Eastfield, Balmoral Hall or the current civic centre site – where will Ashburton’s new civic centre and library be built?

That decision is squarely in the public’s hands and as a community we have until September 14 to let the project management team at Opus Architecture know what we want for our town.

Where ever the complex is built it will come with a price tag of around $20 million, minus any land sales.

The council owns two of the blocks of land – the current site and Balmoral Hall.

It is a joint landowner in Eastfield and while it owns part of the Baring Square east site it would need to buy the remainder from the Methodist Church.

Apart from Eastfield, the remaining three sites would all require buildings to be demolished with both those on Baring Square east having historical significance to the district.

Opus has prepared a public consultation document with information about each site and it has also ranked each against a range of criteria. This information is available on the council’s website – www.ashburtondc.govt.nz, from the council office and library and a number of places in rural villages.

Of the four sites, Baring Square east and Eastfield came out on top, but Opus has ticked Baring Square as its preferred option.

The project is now in our hands. Having a say might take time, but having a say is important for Ashburton’s future.

How do we want our town of the future to look?

Do we want a vibrant town centre with the civic centre and library at its heart, a town where the civic centre stands to the side, looking out on Baring Square east or west, or a town where the civic centre and library are well removed from the CBD? This is our one chance to make the right decision, not just for today but for the Ashburton of tomorrow.

No answers in dairy cattle theft

A Mid Canterbury dairy industry spokesperson expects some answers concerning the theft of hundreds of dairy cows from a farm in the Lagmhor area last week.

Workers on the property noticed about 500 heavily pregnant mixed age kiwi-cross cows, worth more than half a million dollars, were missing from a winter run-off block adjacent to the milking platform.

The theft was reported to Ashburton police on August 25.

Federated Farmers Mid Canterbury president Willy Leferink suspected a number of people would have been in on the plan.

“You would have to be very well organised and there would have been a multitude of people involved – I’m sure someone will crack some day,” he said.

“I will be very disappointed if there is no resolution to this theft.”

Commentators have suggested up to 20 semi-trailer loads would have been required to safely transport the pregnant cattle to a pre-arranged destination.

Leferink, a dairy farmer himself, said an oversupply of feed both on the run-off block and the milking platform alerted farmer workers to the theft; there were simply not enough cows on the property to eat it.

The last head count was done on July 10, when all the stock was accounted for.

It was highly unlikely the herd of stolen cattle had met their fate in meatworks, Leferink said.

The cattle were identifiable by their Nait (National Animal Identification and Tracing) ear tags, which link individual animals to properties as part of a national TB control programme. It is illegal to move untagged cattle and meatworks would not accept them for slaughter.

While Nait tags could be replaced, in this

case it was an unlikely scenario, Leferink said.

“There’s not many people sitting on 500 spare Nait tags. That’s impossible.”

While not discounting the most recent theft could be an inside job, Leferink said there had been too much (stock rustling) going on over the past year to determine that.

“It’s now up to the police to determine what has gone on, I’m sure everybody involved will be questioned hard.”

In terms of preventing rustlers, Leferink said single entry points on to farms would be a good deterrent.

Meanwhile, investigations into the theft are ongoing.

Officers have visited the scene of the crime and taken statements from people working on the property, but police are unable to comment further due to the ongoing investigation, Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said.

In the meantime, farmers are urged to take measures to help prevent stock thefts.

“All farmers should be checking their boundaries and fencelines on a regular basis,” Banfield said.

“It’s unlikely the theft of hundreds of animals could be completed at once and is more likely that multiple thefts could be carried out over a period of time.

“Regardless of the size of your property, ideally stock numbers should be checked once a week.

“Farmers should also be keeping an eye out for unexpected signs of herding near their boundary lines.”

Banfield said it’s essential the community works together to keep police informed.

“Neighbours should make a note of any movement of stock, particularly if it’s at an unusual time of the year.

“If possible, make a note of any suspicious vehicle’s registration number, and a description and direction of the vehicle and what it was carrying.

“Even a photo on a cellphone provides a significant amount of information to police.”

Farmers should also be reviewing their auditing systems.

“There are almost always improvements which can be made to the management and security of stock.

“Clearly tag animals and keep accurate stock numbers. Enhanced security and signage can help to deter opportunistic thefts.”

LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS 2016

You ask the questions When it comes to this year’s local body elections, the Ashburton District has a choice of two mayoral candidates.

Angus McKay and Donna Favel are both hoping to become the district’s mayor for the next three years at the October 8 election and we are offering the community an opportunity to put the hard questions to those candidates.

This is an opportunity to find out what the two candidates think on a wide range of issues – how they see our district developing, where rates money should be spent, how social issues should be dealt with – if it’s bothering you, then here’s a chance to get some answers.

They also got to visit the new library and teacher resource room, which was completed earlier this year.

Ashburton Intermediate’s acting principal Judy Jemmett said this was the first time the school had held a day to show grandparents around.

“I think it’s just really great to show the grandparents where the children

are learning and working,” she said.

Jemmett said she thought there were about 30 grandparents in attendance, which she thought was a good turnout.

“It would be great if we could do this again, we are hoping to,” she said.

Before their guided tour, the grandparents were treated to a morning

tea provided by the Ashburton Intermediate PTA and got to see some of the students’ science fair entries that were on display in the school hall.

Jemmett said the morning tea was the PTA’s idea and was planned and manned by them as well.

There were also some parents who wanted to see their children in learning mode as well.

Farmers urged to sign up to farm recycling

Wastebusters are grateful for the support they’ve received from farmers but are urging them to sign on before dropping off their recycling.

Brooke Stevenson, who manages the On Farm Recycling programme, said they prefer people to sign up instead of bringing the recycling in.

Because they need to sort everything individually and place them into separate bins, it’s easier and more cost effective for Wastebusters to collect it themselves.

Stevenson said recently they spent a day-and-a-half sorting through pre-baled recycling that was dropped off. She said in the end a lot had to be thrown away as well.

“We just don’t have the space or the money to be sorting it ourselves,” she said.

The on farm recycling gives

farmers a number of options to recycle their waste.

They can take paper, cardboard, plastics, baling twine, polypro sacks, bulk bags, bale wrap and silage covers.

Wastebusters also pickup rubbish bins and contaminated waste, but they cost extra and need to be in separate bins.

“We can take it absolutely, as long as it’s in our bins and we can see how many bales it is,” she said.

She said recently they’ve had their 99th farm sign up to the scheme and she hopes the jump in new farms signing up over the past four months will continue.

She said it’s good to see that farmers are starting to break out of their old habits and start to realise they can’t just dump all their waste anymore.

Motorist pledges not to drive again A 92-year-old motorist who hit a cyclist at an Ashburton intersection in February leaving him severely disabled has pledged not to drive again.

Rita Winifred Capon, of Netherby, appeared before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court on Monday for sentencing on a charge of careless use of a motor vehicle causing injury.

Capon drove into the intersection of Bridge and Princes streets and failed to see the cyclist, then aged 51.

The man received significant and debilitating spinal and

head injuries, and now requires round-the-clock care.

At the time he was training for a long distance charity bike ride.

The restorative justice process had eased the distress for both families involved and a significant emotional harm payment had been made to the victim. Ongoing payments would be made during the next few months.

“The families are now able to talk to each other and help in practical ways,” defence lawyer Bevan Coombes told the court.

He said his client had not driven since the accident and would never drive again, and asked

Judge Maze to consider discharging his client without conviction.

However, she declined saying conviction was a mandatory sentencing requirement.

“Nothing can ever put matters fully right,” she said – before convicting Capon and disqualifying her from driving for two years.

Police prosecutor senior sergeant Mike Wingfield said police were not seeking a stiffer sentence.

“There are no winners in this case,” he said.

Members of both affected families were in court for Monday’s sentencing.

Home detention result of firearms theft A man involved in the burglary of a Tinwald business in which two firearms were stolen has been sentenced to four months’ home detention.

Defence lawyer Paul Bradford said Samuel Bryce Anglem had played second fiddle to the lead offender in committing the crime on July 1, during the sentencing appearance before Judge Joanna Maze in the Ashburton District Court this week.

He said Anglem “got nothing” out of the offending and had felt unable to “back out of the offending”.

Anglem and an associate entered Simply Pet Foods’ premises via an adjacent building which was vacant at the time.

Once inside they removed a .233 calibre rifle and a .22 rifle along with ammunition from an unlocked vehicle inside the building. They also made off with a small amount of cash and

a company cheque book. During Anglem’s first appearance in July, police prosecutor senior sergeant Mike Wingfield said police were concerned the guns had made their way into the hands of a wellknown gang.

Anglem was returned to custody where he spent six weeks pending Monday’s sentencing appearance.

Bradford asked Judge Maze to consider the time already served.

Judge Maze said the offending was premeditated and involved the theft of firearms, pointing to Anglem’s previous conviction for aggravated robbery, for which he received a three-year prison sentence in 2010.

She sentenced Anglem to three months’ home detention and added an additional concurrent month in lieu of $10,500 worth of remitted fines.

The primary offender awaits sentencing.

Ashburton District Court news A man who punched, choked and stabbed his partner while intoxicated appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Marley Maurice Grimstrup, of Ashburton, admitted charges of assault with intent to injure, assaulting a woman, wilful damage and possessing a knife. He was remanded on bail for sentencing on September 26.

Police were called to Grimstrup’s address shortly before midnight on July 31.

He and the complainant had been drinking and arguing at the address before she left to lie on the bed.

Grimstrup followed her into the bedroom and began calling her names. He grabbed her around the throat and squeezed then pulled her hair so hard she feared her neck would snap The attack culminated when Grimstrup stabbed the victim in the foot with a pair of scissors.

She then managed to escape to a neighbour’s address and summon police. Grimstrup was found nearby in possession of a knife.

Judge Joanna Maze asked that the presentence report to include appendices for all sentencing options.

Edward James Searle, 23, of Ruapuna, admitted a charge of carelessly using a firearm. He will return to court for sentencing on October 17.

Searle fired a pump-action shotgun across a paddock to warn off an unwanted visitor who had stopped at the property gate asking to see a visiting woman on April 25.

The complainant made off and called police to report the incident.

Searle told police officers his intention was to scare the complainant. A restorative justice conference will take place before the sentencing date.

Vania Lee Glass, 36, of Chertsey, breached the conditions of her home detention sentence by drinking alcohol and, in doing so, was kicked out by her landlord.

As she was no longer living at the address, the probation service applied to cancel the origi-

nal sentence, of which Glass has served less than half the five months’ home detention term imposed in June for assault and wilful damage.

Judge Maze remanded Glass in custody during Monday’s appearance while attempts were made to find a suitable address.

She returned to the dock later in proceedings where she admitted the breach charge and agreed to the cancellation of the sentence.

She was remanded on bail for resentencing on September 12.

Kane George Shaw, 23, of Tinwald, was sentenced to three months’ community detention and 80 hours of community work on assault and wilful damage charges.

Judge Maze said at the time of the offending Shaw still held hope for what was described as an “unstable relationship”.

After a drinking session, he went to the victim’s address to confront her having been told she was involved with another man.

Denied access, Shaw broke a window to open the door. He then chased the woman down a hall punching her and kicking her when she fell to the ground, before turning his attention to a male visitor to the property.

Shaw must also make good the damage to the window and pay his victims’ medical fees.

Damien Ross Mann, 24, of Christchurch, broke into a house he had previously lived in and stole $2000 in cash – leaving a fingerprint on the window he jemmied open in July.

He returned to the address at a later date and repeated the offence, again leaving forensic evidence in the form of a fingerprint.

Mann denied taking the cash, telling police he had broken into the dwelling to steal cannabis.

On Monday Mann appeared before Judge Maze for sentencing. Defence lawyer Michelle Barrell said Mann, who had been remanded in custody, did not want to be released on bail as he was homeless.

able she convicted Mann and remanded him in custody to appear in the Timaru District Court for sentencing on two counts of burglary.

Hayden Esmond Reginald Howard Keil, 22, of Huntington was warned to stop “stalking” a former girlfriend when he appeared on four charges of breaching a protection order.

Keil had contacted the woman using various social media channels over several months.

Defence lawyer Michelle Barrell said the communication had been two way, with the complainant also contacting Keil on numerous occasions. However, Judge Maze was not convinced.

“What you are doing Mr Keil, is stalking,” she said.

“If she makes contact with you – do not reply and keep a record.

You are the one being sentenced.”

Keil was convicted and remanded on bail for sentencing on September 26.

Moon Tuilapepa, 37, of Ashburton was convicted on charges of assaulting a woman. He was remanded on bail for sentencing on October 17 following a restorative justice conference.

Tuilapepa argued with the victim outside before following her indoors where he punched and kicked her causing her to fall to the floor.

He then struck her with a power cord and threw her mobile phone against a wall, smashing it. He admitted all accusations when arrested.

Camelia Rangimohia Tindall, 55, of Ashburton, was convicted of benefit fraud totalling some $22,700.

She will be sentenced on September 26. Judge Maze ordered the presentence report to include appendices for electronic sentencing options.

Ayden Noel Hill, 31, of Hampstead, was convicted and remanded on bail for sentencing on October 17 on four counts of breaching a protection order by way of social media.

Travis Hohepa Williams, 35,

of Ashburton, was sentenced to nine months’ intensive supervision with judicial monitoring on charges of assaulting a woman and assault with intent.

The court was told Williams assaulted his partner and another woman while intoxicated.

The family had since moved from a squalid address and he was receiving counselling to maintain sobriety.

Judge Maze said alcohol abuse was a significant contributor to Williams’ offending.

“If the sentence breaks down I will review upward not downward, she said in explaining the judicial monitoring process to Williams.

Driving matters

James Amarama, 26, of Allenton, went to sleep and drove off Fairfield Road after a night drinking in July.

As a result he faced charges of drink driving (EBA 793mcg/l) on Monday.

He was disqualified from driving for 13 months, sentenced to 80 hours of community work and ordered to undertake six months of supervision to address his alcohol use.

It was Amarama’s third drink driving conviction. He was convicted and discharged on a charge of careless use.

Esera Lauina, 33, of Ashburton, was convicted on a charge of carelessly using a motor vehicle.

He was disqualified for six months, fined $400 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

Lauina failed to notice a vehicle stopped at a stop sign on Cochranes Road.

He swerved around it to avoid collision, crossing the intersection on the wrong side of the road.

Recidivist disqualified driver Karl Joseph Paget, 26, of Methven, was sentenced to two months on community detention and disqualified for a further 12 months as a result of his latest escapade.

Paget has appeared on disqualified driving charges three times in a matter of months.

If his lawyer Paul Bradford struggled to understand the recidivist offending, Judge Maze did not, putting it down to wilful disobedience.

The probation report provided for Monday’s sentencing also found Paget to be “completely cavalier” in his attitude toward his offending.

Michael Bruce Halkett, 18, of Ashburton, was convicted on a charge of driving while suspended.

He was fined $200, ordered to pay court costs of $130 and disqualified from driving for six months.

Ethan John William Roberts, 24, of Methven, admitted drink driving with an excess breath alcohol level of 866 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath (EBA 866mcg/l).

He was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $700 and ordered to pay court costs of $130.

The court was told police found Roberts sitting behind the wheel of his parked vehicle with the motor still running, having earlier been alerted to his erratic driving by other motorists.

Roberts said he had argued with his girlfriend and driven around drinking in response.

Owen Keith Guthrie, 29, Valetta, was convicted and remanded at large for sentencing on a drink driving charge (EBA 659mcg/l) on November 14.

James Patrick Manu Rowe, of Ashburton, was disqualified from driving for six months, fined $850 and ordered to pay court costs of $150 for drink driving (EBA 958mcg/l).

Pio Lomano, 35, of Allenton, was disqualified from driving for eight months and sentenced to 80 hours’ community work on two counts of driving while disqualified.

Lomano is already under indefinite disqualification and must apply to the director of the Land Transport Agency for the return of his licence in due course.

R rage of the zombies is a movie being made by producer/writer Fred Potts and the first half is being filmed in Northland next week, at the behest of Chinese funders who want to see how the shooting progresses before committing to a fully-funded shoot, which will also be in Northland.

Mig Alves is the NZ-based second producer and said R rage of the zombies had been commissioned

Graham Kennedy and Julie Inwood say that the civic project is probably the last opportunity the district has to revitalise the town centre and to cancel out the “donut” effect created by the big box retailers around its perimeter.

Eastfield is a multi-owner company formed to develop a block of land in inner Ashburton, bounded by Cass, Burnett and Tancred streets.

Neither Kennedy nor Inwood have a financial interest in the company, but said that site provided a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to start with a clean sheet without the restrictions of boundaries, to create a civic centre and library that would take Ashburton into the future.

“We’re the envy of many towns and cities in New Zealand with Eastfield’s plans to develop a dynamic community and commercial heart for Ashburton,” Kennedy said.

It was critical the right site was chosen for

the civic complex and Eastfield ticked all the boxes on many fronts as being an essential tool in bringing new life back into the town centre, he said.

“We also believe there will be a $2 million ratepayer saving in the Eastfield deal.”

If the civic complex was built in Eastfield, the council would have a range of ownership options from leasing to 100 per cent ownership or joint venture options, he said.

The first building in the development is under construction and will be leased to the Ministry of Social Development.

Inwood said both she and Kennedy were passionate about Ashburton and about ensuring the civic complex was built on the site that would be the best all round for the community as a whole.

“We’ve got just one chance to do this and one chance to get it right,” she said.

The Eastfield option could also be the saviour of the Methodist Church and county council building, both of which would need to be demolished if the civic centre went on that site, Inwood said.

They say the plans Opus had used as the basis for ticking this site as its preferred option, had been prepared for a pre-earthquake Ashburton.

A 27-year-old Southbridge man was visiting the Rakaia property when police executed the search warrant and was dealt with in the Christchurch District Court where he was fined for possession of methamphetamine and utensils for smoking methamphetamine earlier this year.

found at her home with the exception of the bong pipe. She told police she sold the substances to friends in order to purchase synthetic cannabis for her own use.

On Monday Judge Joanna Maze convicted Williams on the four charges and remanded her on bail for sentencing on October 17. She asked that the presentence report include options for electronically monitored sentencing options.

The Czech tramper who survived a month trapped in remote South Island bush after witnessing her partner fall to his death has penned heartfelt thank-you letters to her rescuers.

Pavlina Pizova was with partner Ondrej Petr, 27, when he slipped and died on the Routeburn Track on about July 27.

She spent three freezing nights sleeping in the open before traipsing through waist-deep snow to a Department of Conservation (DOC) warden’s hut where she sheltered for almost a month.

Pizova, in her 30s, was finally rescued last Wednesday.

This week she made a substantial fourfigure donation to Queenstown Police, Wakatipu Land Search and Rescue [SAR] and DOC, according to Vladka Kennett, Consul for the Czech Republic, who has been helping Pizova recuperate after her ordeal.

Pizova also gave her rescuers a moving letter to express her gratitude for their “enormous effort” to bring her to safety, and get Petr back to his family.

“Nothing can express how grateful I am that our tragedy happened in this area, with your expertise,” she wrote to police and Land SAR. “I’m overwhelmed by your empathy and gentle support. From the bottom of my heart, Pavlina Pizova.”

To DOC she wrote that its “well-main-

tained infrastructure literally saved my life”.

“Thank you and my apologies for any inconvenience caused.”

A post-mortem on Petr’s body was completed on Monday.

The police investigation has now been completed.

Pizova is in the process of booking flights home to the Czech Republic.

Kennett said they hope that Pizova will be reunited with her family back home by the weekend.

It’s understood that Petr’s body will be repatriated this week.

Pizova is “doing really well”, Kennett said, considering what she had gone through.

Police say extreme and severe conditions, including heavy snow and the risk of avalanche, along with her injuries – frostbite and possible hypothermia – prevented Pizova from walking to safety.

She used ashes to make an “H” help sign in the snow and fashioned snow shoes with sticks during the weeks she spent trapped eating food left behind by DOC workers.

Although the Czech pair failed to tell people of their tramping plans, Pizova’s tale of survival has been labelled “courageous” and “resilient”.

She has been praised by police and DOC for remaining at the hut, waiting to be rescued.

Fear versus commonsense?

illeting, it’s been a part of school sports exchanges for decades.

Whether or not kids liked it was immaterial, but staying with a family when you were part of a sports exchange was just par for the course. Sometimes you got lucky and spent a night or two with a great family, sometimes you didn’t but you just gritted your teeth and got through it.

No one really gave billeting much more thought than as an exercise in finding sufficient homes to take in players from the visiting teams.

Safety issues never came into it. It was assumed that all homes were safe homes, well at least those with kids who played sport and who offered to take a stranger’s child into their home for a night or two.

In today’s climate where it’s easy to see a paedophile hiding on every street, parents are much more aware of potential risk factors around having their child stay with a stranger. And that’s placing a huge question mark over the billeting practice.

Several schools have voiced concerns and New Zealand’s principals’ association is grappling for answers.

You can understand just where schools are coming from.

If billeting goes off the list of accommodation options, however, overnight school trips for sports events might too and it’s the kids who will miss out.

Billeting was free and it kept the cost of a trip down to little more than transport. Add accommodation into the mix and the cost per child to travel will put participation out of the reach of many families.

What happens to sports and cultural exchanges and what happens to the many overseas visits Kiwi kids make for two or three weeks and the reciprocal visits made to New Zealand?

Yes bad stuff can happen, but ask children who’ve had the billeting experience and many will tell you it’s been a highlight they’ve remembered for years.

Fear is putting in jeopardy a system that’s worked well for years, and fear continues to erode the willing body of parent helpers for children’s events.

President states innocence In a session less electric than expected, Brazil’s suspended president proclaimed her innocence at her impeachment trial, branding her vice president a “usurper,” and warning senators that history will judge them harshly if they oust a democratically elected leader on false charges.

Dilma Rousseff’s much anticipated appearance before senators was characterised by the same defiance she has shown throughout an impeachment process that has divided Latin America’s most populous nation.

But it was also more civil than the three previous impeachment trial sessions.

In the middle of her second term, the left-leaning leader has been accused of breaking fiscal rules in 2015 to hide problems in the federal budget. She has denied any wrongdoing.

Gao Chengyong, 52, confessed to 11 murders in Gansu and the neighbouring region of Inner Mongolia between 1988 and 2002, the ministry of public security said.

He was detained at the grocery store he runs with his wife in Baiyin, in the northwest province where his alleged crimes took place.

Gao is accused of having targeted young women wearing red and followed them home to rape and kill them.

He often cut their throat and mutilated their bodies. His youngest victim was eight years old.

Some victims also had their reproductive organs removed.

“The suspect has a sexual per-

version and hates women,’ police said in 2004, when they linked the crimes for the first time and offered a reward for information leading to an arrest.

“He’s reclusive and unsociable, but patient,” they said at the time.

He is widely believed to have murdered five women, mutilating several of them. Those killings have never been solved.

Gao was identified after a relative was put under house arrest had his DNA collected and tested.

Police concluded the killer they had been hunting for 28 years was a relation, and Gao’s DNA matched the murderer’s.

There were no immediate explanations as to why the killings stopped in 2002.

Wilder’s nephew said that the actor and writer died from complications from Alzheimer’s disease. Jordan WalkerPearlman said in a statement that Wilder was diagnosed with the disease three years ago, but kept the condition private so as not to disappoint fans. Brabham appeals child rape conviction The son of racing legend Sir Jack Brabham is appealing his conviction for the rape and indecent treatment of an eightyear-old girl.

Pyne Gould avoids suspension

New Zealand residential building consents fell 11 per cent in July, partly reversing a spike higher in June due to applications for retirement villages and multi-unit dwellings.

Seasonally adjusted dwelling consents slipped to 2,629 in July from 2,938 in June, when they jumped 22 per cent, Statistics New Zealand said. On an annual basis, dwelling consents rose 13 per cent to 29,084, marking the highest level for a July year since 2004, the agency said.

Record net migration is putting pressure on the nation’s housing market where a shortage of supply is pushing up prices in Auckland, the country’s largest city, making accommodation unaffordable for many.

The latest data shows Auckland residential consents for the year reached 9,622, less than one-third of the national total despite the city accounting for at least half of the country’s population growth over the last year.

“A lot more growth in consents will be needed to begin eating into the housing shortfall of 30,000

dwellings,” Westpac Bank industry economist David Norman said in a note. “Hopefully with (Auckland) Council having signed off the Unitary Plan, subject to a final period of limited submissions from the public, Auckland will get on and build.”

Today’s figures show the value of building consents rose 15 per cent to $1.65 billion in July from the year-earlier month, as residential consents increased 5.8 per cent to $1.03 billion, while nonresidential consents jumped 35 per cent to $614 million.

NZOG in share buyback offer

BY PATTRICK SMELLIE New Zealand Oil & Gas is to make a tender offer to shareholders to accelerate the buy back of up to 40 million shares, the company announced.

Timed for September 16, the initiative is intended to create a liquidity event that should spur trading and allow shareholders to cash out at a premium to the current share price of 50 cents a share, unchanged since yesterday.

“The maximum price the company intends to pay in the tender is 55 cents, which is a premium of 13.5 percent to the 30-day weighted average market price and more than 14 percent above the average price paid by the company for shares purchased this year,” the company said in a statement to the NZX. Approval to buy back up to 64 million shares was obtained by more than 73 per cent of shareholders at a special meeting a year

ago, but the stock traded in such small volumes “it would take years to complete the buy back at current rates of progress,” said acting chief executive Andrew Jefferies.

“The company is reviewing acquisitions of assets coming to market. The asset we understand best is our own, and therefore it makes sense to buy our shares when we see value,” Jefferies said. On-market buy backs are intended to continue after the tender.

The company’s delayed 2014 annual report was tagged by auditor PwC because of the firm’s inability to obtain sufficient information about Pyne Gould’s investment in Torchlight Group and Torchlight Fund.

“PGC remains focused on patiently executing on its long-term strategy of exiting non-core assets and building a long term

nancial year.” These include an application to wind up the Torchlight fund in the Cayman Islands, a disputed penalty fee on a A$37 million loan from Australian businessman John Grill, and claims and counter-claims over Pyne Gould’s sale of Perpetual Trust to Bath Street Capital.

“This is an unwelcome, but necessary, requirement of defending the balance sheet of PGC,” the company said. “We devote considerable resources to this part of the business and fully expect our position to be validated by the courts in all cases. We will only comment on particular proceedings as the results are made available.”

The shares last traded at 22 cents, and have fallen 10.2 per cent this year.

Pyne Gould Corp, the investment group that plans to target ‘distressed assets’, has avoided being suspended from the NZX after filing its annual results a day late, revealing a drop in income and a narrower full-year loss.

Income and fees from continuing operations fell 14 per cent to 1.3 million British pounds in the 12 months to June 30, while its loss from continuing operations narrowed to 7,000 pounds from 6.3 million pounds a year earlier.

One of the biggest items in its financial statements is a change in foreign currency translation reserves, which recorded an unrealised gain of $8.9 million, from a year-earlier unrealised loss of $15 million. That led the company to record total comprehensive

income of 8.8 million pounds in 2016 from a year-earlier loss of 22.2 million pounds.

Pyne Gould first listed in 2004 but is now an offshore company based in Guernsey, a British dependency and tax haven in the Channel Islands. The business is controlled by Queenstown-based managing director George Kerr.

The company missed the deadline for filing its annual results for the third year running and had been issued a warning earlier today from the NZX that its shares would be suspended if it failed to deliver the report by September 5.

In 2015, Pyne Gould’s shares were suspended from October after its earnings were delayed.

ork was once considered a luxury meat, but now it’s a great go-to meat when you want to ring the changes.

There’s been plenty of debate and discussion over the origin of pork meat, but if you stick with the 100 per cent New Zealand grown label you can be assured you’re buying the best that’s available.

Pork and noodles 2 garlic cloves, crushed 100g button mushrooms, sliced Salt and pepper 700g pork stir-fry, or cubed 2t olive oil 4T juice from canned fruit (use the fruit for dessert ) 1 bunch spring onions, 7.5cm lengths 2T soy sauce 1C silverbeet 2 pkts 2-minute noodles ■ Heat the oil in a saute pan, add the pork. Seal both sides of the meat, cook for 4-5 minutes each side.

■ Meanwhile, cook the 2-minute noodles as per the packet directions.

■ Remove the pork slices, cut into strips.

■ Add the onions, garlic, mushrooms and shredded greens.

Heat to wilt slightly.

■ Add the soy sauce and fruit juice, season and toss to coat.

■ Place the noodles on to serving plates, add the cooked greens, top with the pork and pour over the pan juices.

■ Add black pepper and serve.

1C red wine, plus 1T red wine 500g NZ pork steaks, diced 1T brown sugar 1T soy sauce 1t minced garlic 1t olive oil ■ Mix the brown sugar, 1T red wine, soy sauce, cornflour, oil, cinnamon and garlic together in a bowl.

■ Add the pork, toss to coat in the marinade, cover and refrigerate for about 1 hour.

■ Preheat the oven to 170°C. ■ Heat the sesame oil in a frying pan.

■ Remove the pork from marinade and add to pan.

■ Stir-fry until brown. Transfer to a casserole dish.

■ Add reserved marinade, plum sauce and red wine to pan.

■ Bring to the boil, then pour over pork.

■ Cover the casserole and place in preheated oven.

■ Cook for 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 hours or until the pork is tender.

■ Serve with wild rice and steamed vegetables.

Pork with tarragon and mustard 3T oil 400g pork rump steak 100ml cream, or 220g of crème fraiche 100ml chicken stock 1t Dijon mustard 1t wholegrain mustard Salt and pepper to season 4 potatoes 2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed 1T butter 250g whole green beans, steamed 1/2 t dried tarragon

■ Carefully slice through centre of pork steak horizontally and cut to make eight pieces.

■ Heat 1T oil in a frying pan to a medium heat.

■ Brown pieces of pork on both sides, then put straight into an ovenproof dish.

■ De-glaze pan with cream and stock.

■ Add mustards, tarragon and season with salt and pepper.

■ Bring to the boil then pour over the pork.

■ Place straight into the oven for 15-20 minutes or until the pork is cooked through.

■ Smashed potatoes: Boil potatoes for eight minutes. Drain.

Cool for 10 minutes.

■ Mash roughly. Heat 2T oil in a frying pan.

■ Add butter, garlic and potatoes and fry until golden and crispy on each side.

■ Serve pork with smashed potatoes and steamed beans.

Curry pork kebabs 2 pork fillets 3t red curry paste 1t crushed ginger Coloured peppers Red onion Zucchini Skewers for kebabs 2T olive oil 1T honey ■ Cut two pork fillets into bitesized pieces.

■ Marinate in red curry paste, honey, olive oil and crushed ginger.

■ Alternate pieces of summer vegetables – coloured peppers, red onion and zucchini – on presoaked skewers.

■ BBQ or grill until meat is cooked and vegetables tender.

■ Serve with cucumber, mint and yoghurt salsa.

Picking talent at schools

Andre Van Rooyen, of Mid Canterbury Tennis, said he’s had an amazing start to teaching tennis in schools in the Ashburton District.

The South African, with more than 27 years of coaching experience, is into his third week of teaching in Ashburton schools

and said it was going well.

This is his second week at Borough School and Van Rooyen said he hopes to promote the game in Ashburton.

He said he also uses the sessions as a chance to scout out potential talent to play in the junior interclub competitions.

At the end of each session some of the talented students

are sent home with a form to give to their parents.

The form invites the child to come and have a look at playing at the interclub games.

However, he said the sessions aren’t just about tennis as the kids are taught skills that transfer into other sports, like dynamic stretches.

Before arriving in New Zea-

land in 2008, Van Rooyen operated a tennis academy in Johannesburg, where a number of his students were selected to play for college teams in the US. He also taught in Timaru, Southland and Nelson but said he’s excited about the facilities the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre provides.

Leon MacDonald signs with Crusaders Former All Black Leon MacDonald has been appointed as an assistant coach at the Crusaders.

MacDonald, a former fullback who played 56 tests, is Scott Robertson’s first appointment since taking over as head coach from Todd Blackadder, now coach with Tabai Matson in Bath.

MacDonald, the current head coach of Tasman, will coach the backs at the Crusaders after performing a U-turn last year when he agreed to replace Aaron Mauger at the franchise, but then decided not to.

He will remain as head coach of the Makos in the Mitre 10 Cup. In a statement, the Crusaders said MacDonald will work alongside current assistant backs coach Brad Mooar, with an assistant forwards coach still to be appointed. It is unlikely to be current forwards coach Dave

“I have coached with Razor [Robertson] for the New Zea-

land Under-20 team and I have a great deal of respect for him as a head coach. It is also awesome to be able to continue working with Tasman and I believe that this new role will put me in a strong position to continue de-

veloping talent at that union,” MacDonald said.

Robertson said MacDonald, who has signed a two-year contract, was a significant appointment.

“Leon and I know each other well, having played together for many years and coached together with the NZ Under 20 team.

We already know how each other operates and we know that we can work well together, so this appointment will really help us to achieve a smooth transition to the new coaching team in 2017. I am hugely impressed with Leon as a coach and I know that the skills, experience and energy he will bring to the group will be of immense value to us,” Robertson said.

MacDonald represented the Crusaders for 11 years between 1997 and 2008. He played for the Chiefs in 1998.

The data tells the story of just what South Africa are up against in tonight’s Quad Series clash with the Silver Ferns.

Fresh off a 26-goal thumping of England at the weekend, the Ferns will meet the Proteas in Hamilton tomorrow night in the second leg of the series.

The world number five South African side, coached by former Australian coach Norma Plummer, are realistic about their prospects in the series, with their main objective being to close the gap on the top three nations in the world.

Plummer, who coaches the South Africans on a contract basis, said the step-up in pace and intensity is a marked difference from what her side are accustomed to back home.

The gulf is bluntly illustrated in the veteran centre Erin Burger’s GPS data.

Burger – with 85 tests, the most capped player in the Proteas team – wore a GPS tracking device during the team’s training clash with New Zealand A and was startled by the results.

When she played in the recent SPAR national championships, she covered an average of 3km per game. But against the New Zealand side, she clocked up around 9km in the three quarters that she was on court.

“It was something I was interested in finding out – just how fit I am, and how I could better that,” said Burger.

“And it’s very interesting that it revealed exactly what we lack the intensity in our game. We are used to training long, but not that intense.”

Plummer said the disparity in numbers is revealing.

“It was difference of the intensity, plus they still overwork. We are trying to expose them to standing next to the player, take on the body and take the ball. You don’t have to run over there, come back here, to drop back and go forward for the ball. So they make about four or five moves before they get the ball. We’re teaching them to be far more competitive on a oneon-one basis in an attacking situation,” the two-time World Cup winning coach said. “[Burger] has been in the Proteas for a long time. But as you get older you have to work harder to stay fitter. So she’s taking this opportunity to wear a GPS. We didn’t know it at first, but I think its fantastic that a player wants to make sure she is going to be able to cope with things.”

Despite copping a heavy 68-43 loss to Australia in the weekend’s opening match, Plummer was pleased with her side’s first outing, having reduced the difference between themselves and the world No 1 side by 10 goals since their last meeting at the 2015 World Cup in Sydney.

“I was really quite delighted, from world champs till now, with the improvement I can see, and the commitment and the effort,” Plummer said.

Concussion pressure

Australian sports stars are still feeling pressured to return to play prematurely after concussions, according to the chair of a new working group on the issue. The Australian Athletes’ Alliance, which represents more than 3500 members through the players’ unions of eight sports including AFL and NRL, has formed a concussion group. The body hopes a collaborative approach will help ensure there is greater independence and transparency when it comes to concussion management and research.

Old rivals prove too strong Ashburton College junior girls’ basketball team booked a date with old rivals St Hilda’s Collegiate in the final of their South Island winter tournament yesterday.

Coach Mark Douglas and his side had plenty to motivate them after losing to St Hilda’s in the final of the junior tournament last year.

This time around proved simi-

lar heartache, with Ashcoll going down 75-55, but it was a fitting final for easily the two best girls’ teams at the tournament in Dunedin.

Douglas said at 22-22 at halftime the match was anyone’s, but as the foul count mounted against Ashcoll, St Hilda’s pulled away to an eight-point lead then put the hammer down in the last quarter with three Ashburton

players fouled out.

He said the whole squad had played well throughout the tournament, but in the final Sophie Adams stood out.

“The girls are gutted. They fought hard and the ones coming back next year have had a taste of what they can achieve.”

The Ashcoll girls had not dropped a game going into the final, having beaten Otago Girls

67-40 and Wakatipu 95-16 in pool play, then accounting for Waimea 71-44 in the quarterfinals and Kaiapoi 94-22 in the semi-finals.

St Hilda’s scorecard was also spotless, and they beat Otago Girls 56-31 in their semi.

The Ashcoll boys played off against John McGlashan College for 13th place, while the Mount Hutt College girls were out of the top eight.

We robbed Kata of try – NRL referees boss NRL referees boss Tony Archer admits Warriors centre Solomone Kata shouldn’t have been robbed of a crucial try in the first half of their loss to Wests Tigers on Sunday.

On-field referee Gerard Sutton initially awarded Kata a try on the final play before halftime.

However, it was overturned by the bunker, which ruled that Jordan Rankin was obstructed on the other side of the field.

The Warriors went on to lose 36-24, killing off their finals chances for 2016.

Archer on Monday said there wasn’t sufficient evidence to go against the on-field ruling, explaining that the contact on Rankin by the Warriors attacker was minimal.

“The determination from the bunker needs to be made as to whether or not the impact on

Solomone Kata scores during the NRL match between the Warriors and the Wests Tigers.

Rankin is sufficient enough to overturn the live decision of try,” Archer told NRL.com.

“Because the point of where the ball is scored over on the far side, the ability of Edwards and

the other defenders to defend, I don’t think there’s sufficient (evidence) to overturn the live decision.”

“So they should have confirmed the try.”

Archer’s admission is certain to rankle the Warriors, who were also controversially denied a second try to halfback Shaun Johnson in the second half due to an obstruction on Aaron Woods.

However, Archer stood by that decision.

Warriors coach Andrew McFadden was particularly critical of the Johnson ruling post-game.

“If you play them in live motion they’re just not obstruction,” McFadden said.

“The second one there with Woods, he’s engaged the attacker, he’s never going to get Johnson there. He’s just milked it.”

Cowboys eye Walsh Paul Green has confirmed North Queensland’s interest in signing former Penrith and Newcastle halfback Luke Walsh, who is reportedly plotting an NRL return next year. Tuivaiti signs with Pulse Former Silver Ferns shooter Cathrine Tuivaiti is hoping to reignite her international netball career with a shift south to the Central Pulse. Tuivaiti, 29, has accumulated 24 caps for New Zealand since making her debut in 2011. But she was dropped for last year’s netball World Cup, and has also missed out on new Silver Ferns coach Janine Southby’s team for this season’s internationals against England, South Africa, Jamaica and Australia. Tuivaiti, who spent the last nine years with the Northern Mystics in the transTasman netball league, will line up for the Pulse in next year’s new NZ-only Netball Elite League.

Complacency out Australia’s Diamonds have dismissed talk of complacency as they prepare to take on England in the Netball Quad Series today.

The world champion Diamonds thumped South Africa 68-43 in Saturday’s opening fixture of the international netball season in Auckland. It was a different story a couple of hours later for England, who were smashed 65-39 by hosts New Zealand. Today’s clash in Adelaide follows the Diamonds handing the Roses a 3-0 series drubbing during their tour of England in January.

Joshua undercard possible New Zealand heavyweight Joseph Parker, sparring big men in preparation for his next fight against Ukraine giant Alexander Dimitrenko, could face another in Englishman David Price on an Anthony Joshua undercard in England in November.

Parker is the mandatory challenger to Joshua’s IBF title, and the Kiwi’s next fights, starting with his clash against Dimitrenko at Manukau’s Vodafone Events Centre on October 1, will be preparation for that bout against the 1.98m Joshua, which is likely to happen early next year should the pair retain their respective challenger and title holder positions.

A fight against the 2.03m Price would allow Parker, undefeated over 20 professional fights, to continue his development and give him an experience of fighting in England for the first time.

The venue and opponent for

Joshua’s second title defence on November 26 have yet to be announced.

Price’s trainer David Coldwell told Sky Sports in the UK recently: “I think it’s been whispered already about a possible fight with Parker and we’ve been up for that from day one.

It’s not like Pricey doesn’t want to fight anybody.”

The fight against the 2.01m Dimitrenko will be Parker’s first since he beat Solomon Haumono in Christchurch in July, and he said sparring taller and heavier opponents at his Las Vegas base was a new challenge.

“With this camp, Kev [trainer Kevin Barry] has bought in some big, elite, sparring partners, guys who are a lot bigger than I am. It’s a lot different sparring these tall guys compared to the guys we’ve had in previous camps. Things we’ve been working on are just head movement, making angles,

and just working on defence, improving and getting better.”

Parker, who stands 1.93m tall, said hitting the body early in order to get inside his opponent’s longer reach was a big part of his preparations, and once inside he had to make the most of it.

“With fighting bigger guys, it’s very, very important to start hitting the body early from round one, with previous fights, we’ve had the plan to attack the body from round one but I’ve sort of been attacking at around round three, so I think with this fight it’s very important to execute the plan, and that’s what I’m going to do.

“I have to make the most of it, because you’re doing all this work to get inside and once I’m in there, I feel like I have to throw combinations, throw punches, and then make angles, so I’m safe, you know, to avoid what they’re trying to throw, and then

it’s more like ‘getting in and getting out’ as fast as you can.”

Trainer Barry said he had brought in a Romanian fighter with 20 professional fights, a former world kickboxing champion who is undefeated as a professional boxer, and an undefeated cruiserweight, who “I bring in at the end of the sparring sessions, who throws more punches than any heavyweight. So it’s a very good combination that we’re getting some terrific results with”, Barry said.

“For the Dimitrenko fight, it’s going to be very important Joe uses his speed, it’s very important he’s going to get in, double and triple jab his way in, work away to the body on the big man, and then get out off angles.

“We don’t want to be caught going straight back, and we don’t want to be caught finishing punching and staying inside the reach of Dimitrenko.”

McCartney visits Olympic bronze medallist Eliza McCartney brought joy to hundreds of kids’ faces yesterday at a special visit to her old intermediate school. The 19-yearold pole vaulter has been rushing around Auckland since arriving back from Rio where her underdog bronze medal win in the women’s pole vaulting event launched her profile back in New Zealand. She turned up to Belmont Intermediate on Auckland’s North Shore about 9am, much to the surprise of the pupils, who weren’t told she would be visiting. The pupils clapped and gasped in awe as McCartney walked in from the back of the school hall, beaming and waving, with her medal swung around her neck.

Decision ‘a complete joke’ An English journalist has called the non-citing of All Blacks prop Owen Franks a “complete joke decision”.

Franks wasn’t cited for his alleged eye gouge incident on Wallabies lock Kane Douglas during Saturday night’s test and the decision has not gone down well around the globe.

The backlash against Franks and SANZAAR has not relented, with the Daily Mail’s Chris Foy voicing his disapproval of the decision to let Franks go unpunished while speaking to Andrew Mulligan on Radio Sport’s Crowd Goes WIld Breakfast.

“They’ve absolutely got away with it, it’s a complete joke decision,” Foy said.

“Judging by my timeline on Twitter and a lot of the reactions of people I follow or see or speak to, everyone’s in agreement.

“I mean I’ve had former players I’ve spoken to and heard from, and in this part of the world [the UK], everyone seems completely in agreement, because partly, in Europe, in the United Kingdom, there’s been various cases in the past couple of years where things that didn’t seem quite as bad examples as that particular offence have ended up with players being

cited, go to a hearing, found guilty and banned for a long time when it seemed particularly accidental.

“So then we see those happening, and then we see what happened at the weekend and think ‘this is completely inconsistent’, which is the thing that infuriates everyone.

“If you go anywhere near that area [the face region], you’re in trouble. It doesn’t matter if you meant it as a sickening offense.

Even if it’s an accidental thing.

“We’ll sympathise with those people when it’s really obvious it’s accidental, but they’ve still been punished by the judiciary for do-

ing that, so then when you see this one, where it looks like he has one go, then he has another go, and you think it’s a pretty open and shut case.

“I’m absolutely staggered that they’ve seen that and not taken any action. It was completely obvious what happened.”

Foy went on to criticise the uncertainty and confusion that surrounds the laws of the game.

“One of rugby’s problems is there’s too many shades of grey about the laws. It’s too open to interpretation and debate, that’s one of the issues the game has got.”

World Rugby kicks referee chat debate into touch World Rugby is refusing to weigh in on the “who met who when” Bledisloe Cup referee wars.

Despite angry Australian coach Michael Cheika and Wallabies management firing a complaint into World Rugby asking the governing body to find out whether All Blacks coaches held any meetings with referees before last Saturday night’s Wellington Test, UK officials weren’t buying into the skirmish.

The Herald sought World Rugby’s views but it replied: “We will not be making anyone available for interview relating to this matter. Should we issue a statement, I’ll make sure you receive it.”

The All Blacks are sailing on through the Rugby Championship but rivals Australia and South Africa continue to run into injury troubles.

Matt Toomua’s worrying head knock history could ground him for the rest of Championship as the Wallabies wisely protect him from long-term after-effects.

And South African winger Ruan Combrinck will likely miss the rest of the tournament after suffering a leg injury during a 26-24 weekend loss in Argentina.

Toomua was concussed in the All Blacks’ 42-8 shellacking of Australia in Sydney.

The experienced centre will now miss the Tests against South Africa and Argentina next month and could be spelled from the two return Tests in October.

The Wallabies are following World Rugby’s concussion protocols to the letter.

Toomua’s recent concussion against the All Blacks in Sydney was his fourth in The Rugby Championship in three seasons.

He was spelled from last weekend’s 29-9 lesson on precision from the All Blacks in Wellington and will undergo cognitive testing after his training return during time-off.

In 2014, the abrasive back was knocked out in back-to-back Tests against South Africa and Argentina and ordered to take more than a month off.

No Toomua for an indefinite period reinforces coach Michael Cheika’s backing of Quade Cooper and Bernard Foley as his midfield beyond the Test against the Springboks at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday week.

Combrinck, one of the few success stories in a struggling Springboks side this season, was injured in the first half last weekend and X-rays revealed that he had a fractured fibula.

A South African Rugby spokesman said the back could be out of action until mid-October. The last Championship fixtures are on October 8.

Combrinck, who can also play fullback, debuted off the bench for the Springboks during a June home series against Ireland and quickly became a first choice.

He was a key figure in the Golden Lions team that reached the Super Rugby final for the first time, impressing with his powerful running, strong defending and ability to convert long-range goal kicks.

There are also concerns about the fitness of fly-half Elton Jantjies, who was due to have a groin injury scanned upon the team’s return to South Africa.

Coach Allister Coetzee said the Springboks lost because the Pumas made better use of scoring chances.

“They used their opportunities better than we did,” admitted the 53-year-old.

“We had enough chances to create scoreboard pressure, but did not take them. At Test level, you take your chances or you get punished.”

When will All Blacks’ winning streak end?

Djokovic sings For whatever reason, no matter how many grand slams Novak Djokovic wins, he just doesn’t seem to feel the love.

Not like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal anyway. There’s something intangible about that pair that makes everyone want to see them do well – whether it’s the way they handle themselves off the court or the fact they’ve provided so many special moments on the court.

They’ve endeared themselves to sports fans everywhere.

Djokovic has won 12 majors and is far and away the best player in the world at present. He’s admired, he’s appreciated, he’s respected and he’s liked, but you get the sense he just isn’t loved.

It’s hard to pinpoint anything specific he has or hasn’t done for such a result. He played the funny man earlier in his career when he’d imitate and mock certain players’ habits in an effort to bring a bit of life into his matches, and while that earnt him fleeting laughs, long-term love has eluded him.

After comfortably beating Australia in two Bledisloe Cup tests, and with Rugby Championship fixtures to come against Argentina and South Africa – both of whom have beaten each other over the past fortnight, All Blacks’ supporters might be entitled to ask: When will their team’s winning streak end?

The All Blacks have now won 13 tests in a row, a streak which started with their 41-13 victory over Australia at Eden Park last year, their final match before the World Cup. The record test streak for top tier nations is 17, which the All Blacks have accomplished twice - in 1965-69, and more recently in 2013-14. The Springboks also accomplished it between 1997-98.

In 2014, Australia stopped the All Blacks’ winning streak in Sydney with a 12-all draw.

Should the All Blacks win their next four tests against the Pumas and Springboks, whom they play twice each, home and away, the record-breaking 18th victory could be achieved against Australia at Eden Park on October 22, the Bledisloe Cup dead rubber.

It’s a big ‘if’, and the record will be the last thing occupying the minds of the All Blacks, who will be looking to make incremental improvements before their next test against Argentina at Waikato Stadium a week on Saturday. But it’s there all the same, and this All Blacks team under Steve Hansen, the first to win back-to-back World Cups, has shown a willingness to embrace challenges.

The last time the All Blacks were on the brink of equalling the record, hooker Keven Mealamu said: “It will be something we walk towards and really embrace because it hasn’t been done before and it would be awesome to be the team to do it.”

match, struggling with a right arm that required treatment from a trainer after only five games.

Asked about his health during the on-court interview, Djokovic deflected the question, saying: “I don’t think it’s necessary to talk about this now. I’m through. I’m taking it day by day.”

During the match, Djokovic hit first serves around 160km/h, sometimes slower – 40km/h or so below what’s normal for him. He hit second serves in the 120km/h range.

He flexed that right arm, the one he has used to wield a racquet on the way to his 12 grand slam titles, and appeared generally unhappy.

In the stands, Djokovic’s coach Boris Becker gnawed on his fingernails, looking nervous as can be.

This was the No. 1 ranked Djokovic’s first match at a major tournament since losing to Sam Querrey in the third round of Wimbledon, which ended the Serb’s bid for a calendar-year Grand Slam after titles at the Australian Open and French Open.

Pair in under-19 squad Mid Canterbury’s Thomas Heywood and Tyler Blackburn who have been selected for the Heartland Under-19 squad to compete at the Jock Hobbs Under-19 Tournament in Taupo. The Jock Hobbs Memorial Tournament will have 400 players from 16 teams.

There will be 14 provincial union teams, one Auckland B side and the Heartland under-19 which includes at least one player from each of the 12 Heartland unions. The tournament will kick off on September 15.

Time ‘has to be called’ Greg Alexander admits to being baffled by the Warriors’ travails.

But the former NRL, State of Origin and Australian test star – who is making his mark as league’s high profile TV comments man – says time should be called on coach Andrew McFadden after two extremely disappointing seasons.

Veteran wing Manu Vatuvei is out with a sternum injury and his centre partner Solomone Kata is serving a one-game suspension after taking an early guilty plea on a grade one dangerous throw charge following Sunday’s loss to Wests Tigers.

The pair’s absence has resulted in a backline reshuffle with David Fusitu’a replacing Kata in the centres, Tuimoala Lolohea mov-

ing to fullback and Ken Maumalo – back from a one-game injury absence – and Jonathan Wright named on the wings.

The rest of the starting line-up is unchanged from the one used in the 24-36 loss to the Tigers, a result which ended the Warriors’ chances of reaching the finals for the first time since 2011.

A five-man bench has been named with last week’s interchange players Sam Lisone, Ben Matulino and rookie Ata Hingano joined by two other 2016 newcomers Bunty Afoa and Nathaniel Roache.
