Incidents of late-night violence are decreasing in Ashburton despite the arrests of four men yesterday, say those who are introducing a community action plan. Ashburton police arrested four men in their 20s as they were allegedly among a large group of intoxicated males fighting after leaving a local bar at closing time just after 3am. Police were alerted to the incident on Tancred Street by security staff and when they arrived the group started moving to vacant land leading to Burnett Street. The group ended up on Burnett Street near The Arcade where a number of windows were broken. The fight was brought under control
by police with assistance from security and hotel staff. It is believed the event developed from a verbal argument involving the males and some of their associates, police said in a press release. “There were no serious injuries or weapons involved in the fighting and this matter is not connected to the recent gang-related event in Davis Crescent on Thursday afternoon,” police said. Mayor Angus McKay said the town was doing everything it could to stop such late-night incidents. Currently the Ashburton District Council is working with stakeholders such as licensed premises and police on a safer public places action plan. Already the town had security cam-
eras, community ambassadors and Maori wardens, and among initiatives which could be introduced as part of the plan were a higher number of upgraded security cameras, a late-night taxi shuttle service, and upgrading liquor ban signs around town. “Compared with the rest of New Zealand we are very safe,” Mr McKay said, referring to crime statistics which showed a decrease for Ashburton in recent years. “You can put all the measures in possible, will that stop someone throwing a punch at someone else?” Mr McKay said.
