Terrain parks may stay open for extra fortnight

Snow enthusiasts may get the chance to enjoy Mt Hutt for longer than they ever have before.

The team at Mt Hutt is currently in the process of seeking an extension to the season to provide freestyle skiers and boarders the extra chances to enjoy the terrain park.

After a bumper season of snow, and following on from news this week that some form of Christmas skiing and boarding may be a possibility later this year, ski area manager James McKenzie said they were working through the logistics to see if it was possible.

Dubbed the Spring Park Camp Pass, it would give guests lift access to Gunners Alley, Jib Garden and Cross Course terrain parks with approximately 20 features, including rails, boxes and six jumps with professional coaching available at certain times on weekends.

“Thanks to the incredible snow this year, we have developed one of the best terrain parks in years,” McKenzie said.

“It’s a shame not to use it for as long as we can.

“A few staff are super keen to stick around for a couple of extra weeks after our official closing date (October 15) because they just don’t want the season to end.”

Three hundred and fifty passes will be created for the Spring Park Camp which will go from October 16 to October 29.

But the catch is that to make the plan work, all of the passes will need to be sold.

“By focusing all our remaining people and resources on one location we have a unique opportunity to provide facilities and training for athletes and amateur park lovers well beyond the usual season.

“If there is demand we may extend the coaching to midweek too.”

While the terrain park will be open, many of the mountain’s other facilities, such as food and beverage outlets and chain hire, will not be open.

Passes are available now for $189.

Police biter convicted of assault An Ashburton man who bit a police officer was convicted of assault in the Ashburton District Court yesterday.

Simon David McKenzie, 36, had denied the charge and another of trespass.

Both charges arose when police were called to KFC Ashburton on June 8 where McKenzie was drunk and abusing staff.

Police issued him with a trespass notice and warned him to stay off the business premises,

which included the carpark.

When they returned, they found McKenzie in the drive-through lane, impeding traffic.

Judge Tom Gilbert said McKenzie was drunk and may not have been clear that the trespass notice

also included the drive-through area. He dismissed that charge.

But he found McKenzie, who represented himself and initially told the court he was God and could not be charged with any offence, was guilty of biting.

McKenzie was aggressive with the arresting officers and during a fight in the police cells he bit one on the thigh and hand.

McKenzie, who is facing other charges, was remanded in custody until November 7 for sentence.

Self-defence with a meat cleaver ‘went too far’ An Ashburton man who fought his brother with a meat cleaver has pleaded guilty to a charge of assault.

Craig John Docos admitted fighting when he appeared in the Ashburton District Court yesterday and said using the meat cleaver in self-defence had been a bit excessive.

Judge Tom Gilbert remanded him to December 15 for sentencing in the Christchurch District Court.

He indicated a sentence of electronically-monitored home detention or community de-

tention was likely.

The brothers had been sharing accommodation when the fight occurred.

Docos’ brother had tried to awaken him to go work, using a meat cleaver as motivation.

Docos managed to get hold of the meat cleaver and hit his brother on the hand and the head, as well as landing several blows.

Judge Gilbert said he accepted it was an unprovoked assault on Docos, who had acted in self-defence “that went too far”.

Digger extensively damaged in fire

Volunteer firefighters from Ashburton and Mayfield confronted a burning 21-tonne digger yesterday morning in Carew.

The digger caught alight in a paddock on a property at around 10.20am.

Two fire trucks and a number of crew raced to the scene.

Mayfield Volunteer Firefighter Alex Quigley said firefight-

ers were working to put out the flames for nearly an hour.

Due to the location of the digger, there was fortunately no chance of the flames spreading to anything else, but by the time they were extinguished the digger was in an un-driveable state.

“It was pretty extensively damaged,” said Quigley.

He said it was too early to determine the cause of the fire.

Fishing season to start, but don’t forget your licence

Tomorrow marks the start of another freshwater fishing season and anglers are urged to make sure they have a licence before taking to the district’s waterways.

Central South Island Fish & Game officer Rhys Adams said there were serious consequences for people caught fishing without a licence, given it is a criminal offence.

The maximum penalty is $5000 – along with the potential loss of expensive fishing gear – so it makes sense to get one, Adams said.

There are a range of licence options available, he said, from a

full season through to one-day, three-day or nine-day options, depending on how often people think they might go fishing.

It’s also important that anglers understand the other regulations that may apply to the river, stream or lake they intend to fish, such as the type of tackle allowed or trolling with more than one rod per angler.

Fish & Game rangers will be out on opening day, Adams said, ensuring anglers are compliant and having a chat with them about how their day is going.

Most of the rangers are volunteers, he said, passionate about fishing and ensuring the fisheries remain sustainable.

As for the best spots tomorrow, Adams said given recent rain in the high country, the lower reaches of the Ashburton River are likely to have clarity problems, so will be more suited to those using bait or spinners.

However, the upper reaches are likely to be better, he said, along with destinations like Bowyers Stream, Taylors Stream and Lake Hood.

Adams warned anglers that given flooding in the district in July, rivers could be quite different to how they have been in the past, with pools changed, gravel moved and fallen willows in places where they may not have been in the past.

Hunt on for Mewtwo

Ashburton has been selected as one of only five locations in New Zealand to take part in a special event for the worldwide phenomenon of Pokemon Go. Pokémon Go is a free-to-play, location-based augmented reality game developed by Niantic for iOS and Android devices.

The game was the result of a collaboration between Niantic and Nintendo, by way of The Pokémon Company, and was initially released in selected countries in July 2016.

Statistics show that within its first

year, Pokemon Go was downloaded more than 750 million times across the globe and it has a strong popularity base in Ashburton.

Sunday’s rare event, which will see an active group of Pokemon Go players here in Ashburton participating in taking down one of the most powerful, rare legendary pokemon, Mewtwo after being issued exclusive invitations from the game’s developers.

Ashburton was chosen alongside Auckland, Wellington, Kerikeri and Invercargill as the New Zealand locations for the event.

George, said the event would see a large number of players converge on the Ashburton Domain on Sunday in the hope of capturing the elusive pokemon.

“It’s pretty exciting that a small population like Ashburton has been given this chance.

“There’s quite a group of us around here that are right into the game so it should see a good turnout.”

The event invitations stated that it would take place between noon and 1pm on Sunday, but there is a belief that it may not be until between 1pm and 2pm with daylight saving not being taken into account.

Wonky Donkey creator here for show Acclaimed children’s author and performer, Craig Smith will be in Ashburton next week to perform a one-off school holiday show.

The man behind popular children’s books; The Wonky Donkey, Willbee The Bumblebee and Kaha The Kea will stage a show at the Ashburton Sinclair Centre on Tuesday, October 4 at 11am.

lustrator Scott Tulloch and publisher, Scholastic to publish a new book which he will be promoting, The Scariest Thing In The Garden, as well as giving pushes for his new album Not Just For Kids 2 and his crowdfunded book, The Drizzly Bear.

Van plunges into riverbed A van full of tourists that escaped an 8-metre plunge into a riverbed are said to be lucky to be alive.

Stuff have reported that a van went off a bridge on the Hurunui’s Inland Kaikoura Road about 9.45am on Friday.

The crash resulted in two people being hospitalised with mod-

erate injuries, while the rest of the passengers remained relatively unscathed.

Kaikoura Fire Brigade chief fire officer Ian Walker told Stuff that a van “carrying six tourists went through the bridge rails and fell approximately 8m to the riverbed”.

Occupants of the vehicle were lucky to escape last week’s flood waters, with the van landing on its roof in the dry riverbed.

Stuff reported that a male and a female were flown to Christchurch Hospital with moderate injuries, while the other four passengers were checked by St John

paramedics at the scene.

It was “pure luck” there were no serious injuries, Walker told the Fairfax reporter.

“They’re just very, very lucky people.”

The road was cut down to one lane for several hours, but reopened by 2pm.

Truck driver warns ‘stupid’ rock-throwers When an object thrown from an overbridge smashed into truck driver Laurie Rowell’s windscreen, his reaction was to “just keep trucking”.

The trucker of 43 years was not particularly fazed at being pelted with an unknown object, but did have a message for whoever was responsible for tossing rocks, branches, and wooden pallets off a Kapiti overbridge, damaging five trucks and a car.

“Just don’t be so bloody stupid,” he said.

“Someone’s going to get killed.

Christchurch father-of-one Brad Lomax’s body was found on the banks of the Waimakariri River near Harrs Road about 10pm on September 4. Name suppression lapsed yesterday for Kasha William Gosset, a 35-yearold landscape gardener from Oxford, and Cody Derek Martin, a 30-year-old drainlayer from Mairehau, who are charged with murdering 24-year-old Lomax. The pair appeared via audio-visual link at the High Court in Christchurch yesterday. They will be back in court on December 8.

Arrest for invasion A man has been arrested and charged after a violent home invasion in South Taranaki where a homeowner was beaten with a baseball bat. A 41-year-old has been charged with aggravated burglary and injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He is being held in custody and will appear in the Hawera District Court on Tuesday, Fairfax reported. He allegedly broke into an Opunake home between 5am and 6am yesterday, his face disguised. Who’s got the best pie?

They say, we are what we eat.

So, I must be a steak and cheese pie – which means, for now anyway, I shall be known only as Mr S & C. Since that one time, all those moons ago, that some smart baker decided it might be a good idea to get chunks of steak and slap them together with some cheese and a dollop of a gravy-like sauce and bake it all together in the middle of a pastry haven, the steak and cheese pie has been a humble part of the Kiwi make-up.

But what makes a good, in the circumstances of this investigation, steak and cheese pie?

And, more importantly, where would one go to find not just any version, but the best in this district.

Mid Canterbury is not exactly a barren land when it comes to finding a good pie – but we are not on the search for just any old pie. We want to find the best.

And I, Mr S & C, am prepared to scour from the far reaches of the top of Mt Hutt down to the slightly sandy, but more stoney, beaches at Wakanui and everywhere in between to find it.

So, charged with an empty tummy and a desire for some beef and cheese filled party goodness, I begin my mission.

And the journey doesn’t begin too far from home base.

Mr Man’s Bakery, just down the street from the Guardian office, is a bit of a hidden gem of quality food.

For a modest $4.50, one can find a steak and cheese pie nestled in their pie racks, looking good and ready to be eaten.

Pull it out of the brown bag that it temporarily calls home and you’ll find what appears to be a modest, run of the mill pie.

The pastry is about as golden as a summer’s sun, puffed a little on the top but as aesthetically pleasing as a litter of Labrador puppies, sleeping soundly.

If one is impressed with the look of a Mr Man’s Pie, then they will find themselves in raptures once they bite into its meaty goodness.

It is about as true as a steak and cheese pie can get. With chunks

Nothing quite beats a good steak and cheese pie, but where do you find the best? In an attempt to uncover Mid Canterbury’s best steak and cheese pie, today we begin a weekly segment reviewing some of the different offerings from around the district.

In brief Manslaughter charge The driver of a car involved in a fatal police pursuit in Cambridge on Wednesday night faces seven charges including one of manslaughter over the death of one passenger. Cameron Thomas, of no fixed abode, is also charged with two counts of reckless driving causing injury, one of failing to stop, failing to render assistance after the crash, driving while disqualified and driving with an excess breath alcohol. A hearing was held in his absence at the Hamilton District Court yesterday while Thomas remained at Waikato Hospital with minor injuries.

Taxi theft: Three arrests Three youths have been taken into custody after a taxi was stolen near Porirua. Police reported the taxi was stolen at 10.40pm on Thursday night, during the course of a fare from Titahi Bay to Cannons Creek. The taxi is reported to have stopped and the driver got out, at which time the vehicle was stolen. Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Todd said police were alerted to the matter about 40 minutes later when they received calls from members of the public. “The vehicle was sighted and after a brief pursuit and deployment of road spikes the vehicle was stopped,” he said.

Milford Track ‘a toilet’

of steak that melt in the mouth, a succulent accompaniment of sauce and a good portion of cheese covered by that outstanding pastry – it’s exactly what the doctor ordered.

As a responsible pie connoisseur, it is at this time I should do my civic duty by encouraging all to ensure they blow on the pie and although this version from Mr Man’s isn’t what you would call piping hot, it is warm enough to give the taste buds a bit of a

sizzle without the use of the wonderful advice in the line above.

We weren’t sure what to expect from the first instalment of Who’s got the best pie? but Mr S & C has found himself considerably impressed.

And so, it is with some surprise, but with no hesitation that I give this pie, the first in this series which will run until my waistline bulges, an eight out of 10.

The only negative?

Crumbs. Those pesky little dev-

ils were in abundance for hours after my feast and while great for snacking on later, they do turn the image of a clean and well-kept person into a scruffy individual.

Harsh, and slightly pedantic, I know. But we are looking for perfection.

So, until the urge for another pie returns again, which will be next Friday in preparation for Saturday’s Guardian, Yours faithfully – Mr S & C – EOATP (Expert on all things pie).

Visitors are littering the Milford Track with toilet paper and human waste. A Department of Conservation (DoC) contractor told Radio New Zealand the amount of human waste visible was “disgusting” and that the situation was getting out of control. “On some of the Great Walk tracks, you find poos and toilet paper just littered down the side of the tracks,” the contractor said. “In some of the campsites along the Milford Road, it’s really quite bad, you’ve only got to walk 20m into the bush and it’s all over the place. At some of the DOC campsites, even though there are toilets there, for some reason some individuals only use the toilet paper and they’ll poo outside the toilet,” the contractor said. “It’s just disgusting.”

Chantelle planning fundraiser feast

S

he sports a passion for fresh produce, a soft spot for supporting the community and everlasting admiration for Ashburton’s historic spots.

So when the Ashburton Art Gallery approached local food personality Chantelle Quinn for fundraising inspiration, she was more than happy to take on the challenge with a big, bold and innovative idea – one which has already achieved near sell-out success.

Quinn’s latest project is called Ashburton’s Longest Dinner and will transform the arcade into a grandiose dining hall for one big night on October 7, in support of local art.

It’s a vision Quinn said she’s had for a long time.

“The arcade is such a beautiful, historic place and I’ve always really wanted to do a big long table down the middle of it,” she said.

“It’s a big, major event ... a lot of work, but it will be great.”

Between a stint on Masterchef in 2012, experience running Twelve Bar in Ashburton, Panther’s Rock Café in Mayfield and catering for many supper clubs at Ronald McDonald House South Island, Quinn is well-versed and well-known in local gastronomy circles. But she says she’s most happy where she’s working now, at the helm of Twentyfour Catering Co. “I have a lot of passion for cooking simply yummy food and it’s a passion which has just grown and grown,” she said.

“When I left Masterchef, Simon Gault told me ‘If you don’t go back to small town Ashburton and make the most of your passion, then you’re not the smart woman I thought you were …’ and when Simon Gault tells you to do something, you do it.

“But when I was working in everyday restaurant hospitality I almost started to lose that passion.

I’m a people person and sometimes when you’re in the kitchen you don’t get to do a lot of talking.”

She said she now loves being able to sit down with clients, create a personalised menu and event and work with a wide variety

“To be honest I’m still amazed I get to write menus and serve food and call it a real job.”

The four-course menu for the Longest Dinner draws from some of Quinn’s favourites – including duck liver pate, cheeses and salmon, Anzco beef, roasted beetroot puree and a dessert trio.

Meals will be accompanied by wine from Lake Chalice, live entertainment from local musician Luke Glendining and aesthetic delights from Samantha Rose flowers. Silk Estate by Toni May wedding hire have also jumped on board to donate over $5000 of time and product.

“We have so much to offer here,” Quinn said, who is a past Anzco ambassador and a proud advocate for fresh Mid Canterbury produce.

“All the fresh local produce in Mid Canterbury is amazing and all the food will be fresh. It will just be the whole package, with good food, good atmosphere, good wine and good service.”

Funds from the Longest Dinner will go towards supporting new exhibitions at the Ashburton Art Gallery, along with programmes for the community.

As the newly elected candidate for the Rangitata Electorate, Andrew Falloon is already well known in these parts. But that’s Andrew Falloon the politician, so Guardian Editor, Matt Markham sat down with the Ashburton native at the end of a hectic first week to try and get to know Andrew Falloon the person, a little better.

P

oliticians are supposed to be these reserved, closedbook types.

The sort of people you walk away from a conversation with wondering how much of what you have just been told is true.

It’s not a personality trait that they are born with, but more an acquired skill from an extended period of time of having to be very careful about what they say.

My Friday morning catch-up with Andrew Falloon, less than a week after his election into Parliament as the Rangitata Electorate candidate, is nothing like any other political interview I’ve done before.

Although, politics was never actually the intention of the interview in the first place.

I wanted to get to know Andrew Falloon the person, not the politician – but separating the two, especially right now, is no easy feat for either of us.

We’ve arranged to meet at Ashburton newest eating establishment, Cleaver’s Corner, for a coffee.

I saunter over from East Street, debating whether or not I should have taken a work car, only to find that Falloon has walked from

Allenton because “it’s such a beautiful day”.

Initially that strikes me as being a little bit odd.

But as the course of our catchup unfolds it begins to make a whole lot more sense.

That’s just how the 34-year-old likes to operate.

Although similar to many politicians, he’s doesn’t appear to be cut from the same cloth as some of his colleagues.

He’s a Kiwi boy at heart – just one who now wears a suit and holds one of the most important roles in New Zealand as a member of parliament – but is just as happy walking the streets and taking everything in as he would be driving around in a vehicle, being chauffeured from one venue to the next.

“I’m still the same guy I have always been, at least I’d like to think I am,” he says as he sips on a long black.

If the past few months of campaigning and putting “literally everything I have” into winning the Rangitata seat has taken its toll on Falloon, he’s not showing it.

In fact, he’s almost bubbling – talking enthusiastically about his

last couple of days in Wellington being inducted and what the future holds.

Parliament is no new experience for him. He’s been in and out of there in various roles for pretty much the past decade in roles with notable politicians such as Rodney Hide, Phil Heatley and, more recently, Stephen Joyce.

“It was a little bit different than what has become the normal for me I guess, being inducted was a pretty special moment and made everything feel a bit more real.

“Although I still don’t think it’s actually sunk in yet, because it’s been all go. I believe it will at some point down the track though.”

Ten minutes into our chat and already we’ve drifted on to politics – something we said we wouldn’t do, but it’s a bit like trying to talk to a dairy farmer about the environment, eventually you’ll always drift back on to the subject of cows. We try to get things back on track by talking about Falloon’s childhood.

Born in Ashburton in 1983, the first and only son of John and Shirley and brother to Anna, Falloon attended Allenton Primary

School, incidentally where his mother also worked in the office.

“That was never nice when you got sent to the principal’s office, there was Mum almost sitting there waiting for you. Thankfully that didn’t happen very often.

“It also meant that I never missed many days. We lived out on Farm Road and the odd occasion when it snowed we still had to trek into the school from home, so I was one of those (what I’d like to call anyway) unlucky six or so kids who didn’t get the day off when it snowed.”

From primary school, he went to Ashburton Intermediate before heading “off up the road” to Christchurch Boys’ High School.

“I actually applied for the scholarship at St Andrew’s, but

lost out to a good mate of mine, Nick Letham who went on to be head boy, so they made the right decision.”

Like most young men from a rural town, rugby was at the forefront and a factor in the decision-making when deciding what school to go to.

“Both Christchurch Boys’ and STAC had good rugby programmes, unfortunately at that time Ashburton College didn’t.”

Harbouring dreams of becoming an All Black, Falloon’s highest honours were the school’s 3rd XV – a notable achievement, but one unlikely to capture the attention of national selectors.

“That put a dampener on those dreams pretty quickly.”

successful accountant in Ashburton, there wasn’t an expectation put on his shoulders, but he did feel the need to at least give accountancy a crack.

Despite being good with numbers and genuinely interested in the subject, it never amounted to much more.

There’s a bit of laughter offered up from Falloon when the question is put to him about when politics became a goal.

And the truth of it is, it came more by chance than anything else.

Living abroad for a year in London and spending his spare time looking around Europe, Falloon found himself pulling pints and living upstairs from where he worked.

“I found it really hard to unwind after a shift. So, I used to watch television for an hour after I’d finished and the only thing that was on at the time was a programme a lot like our Question Time, so I got right into the political side of things over there.”

After returning from London, university called and quickly it became all encompassing.

“I got stuck right into it, dived headfirst in and somehow decided to do a few papers in political science and it all stemmed from there really.”

University didn’t only give Falloon his career path though.

It’s also where he met the love of his life, Rose.

This is where in the interview, just like he did when giving his

speech last Saturday night, that a pretty emotional side of Falloon emerges. He apologises, orders another long black and steels himself to talk about meeting the girl who eventually became the most important thing in his life.

“At the time I met Rose, I was in a pretty bad place to be honest.

“I’d had three friends all die in separate, tragic circumstances in a really short amount of time and it was weighing on me heavily.”

Through the mere fact that they attended a lot of the same classes, the pair became strong friends and confided a lot in each other.

“It was only ever a friendship at that point, I guess you could say we became best friends – she really helped me through some

difficult times.”

The raw emotion of those memories is followed pretty quickly by a wry smile from Falloon when asked what the tipping point was that led a strong friendship to become something more.

“Mum happened,” Falloon laughed.

“Rose’s grandfather had been really sick and she’d come up to Wellington to spend time with him, but, being a student, didn’t have a lot of money to head home for Christmas.

“So, I invited her down to Ashburton to spend it with me and the family.”

The double bed was snapped up by Anna and her now husband, while Falloon’s mum pushed the two single beds together in the other room for Andrew and Rose.

“It was pretty embarrassing at the time, but I guess looking back now it’s one of the reasons we advanced from friends to something more.”

The pair married in February of 2012 and Falloon was quick to mention that a lot of what he does is based on the advice and thoughts of Rose.

“She’s a lot smarter than I am,” he laughs.

“Throughout these past few months she’s been incredible though, I honestly couldn’t have done it without her.”

After two coffees and an hour that seemed to pass in five minutes, my time with Falloon is up.

I try to close the catch-up by asking Andrew about his longterm goals and what he wants to achieve, but if there’s something on the horizon, he’s not telling.

“At the moment, my focus is being the best politician I can be for this region – that’s all I am thinking about.”

Volcano ready to blow

Vanuatu officials have ordered the complete evacuation of an island in the Pacific archipelago where a rumbling, belching volcano is threatening to blow.

Boats have begun ferrying residents off Ambae island, which is home to about 11,000 people, in a process expected to take about a week.

The Manaro volcano has been increasingly active for a week or more, raising fears of a major eruption.

Government spokesman Hilaire Bule said ministers decided they couldn’t risk people’s lives and so ordered the compulsory evacuation.

Previously, people had been evacuated to other areas on the island.

Ambae resident Lilian Garae said she could see “smoke coming out from the hills” and hear regular booming noises from the volcano.

She said she was waiting to hear when she might have to leave her home and where she might be sent.

Ambae is about 400sq km, making it about the size of Nelson city.

Apology for ‘trauma’ The alleged mastermind behind Kim Kardashian West’s robbery has apologised to her. Place the vegetables in a large bowl and toss with the tarragon and half the lemon juice.

Mix the remaining lemon juice with the manuka honey, soy sauce and 3T olive oil to make the dressing.

Divide the salad leaves amongst four plates and place the grilled vegetables on top.

Slice the Tegel Manuka Smoked Whole Chicken – Original 1.1kg and lay on top, then scatter with the grapes and feta and drizzle with the dressing.

Note: You can also cook the vegetables in a skillet or griddle pan instead of a BBQ, or you could roast the kumara and peppers and use steamed broccolini if you wish.

Venue with charm Quality venues with charm and character are hard to come by, let alone coupling this with quality service, and having the flexibility to make the function your own.

The answer has been found with Larcomb Vineyard under the new Management of G&T Catering.

Over the years, Larcomb Vineyard has been the place to go for your function or event in the Selwyn district, with its Barn Dances being a great hit through the 90s’, daily cellar door coupled with the restaurant service; there are many treasured memories.

In the mid 2000s’, the cost to maintain the grapes was becoming too much, so some of the vines were taken out, and the restaurant ceased to trade.

As you arrive at the venue, you are welcomed by a weathered carriage and travel the tree-lined drive to the venue. The distinct barn red colour of the buildings greets you, and ensures you have the true country feeling.

Across the courtyard is the stables, a 1900’s building mainly still in original condition after withstanding the recent earthquakes.

The stables has charm and character from the horse and carriage days, with items from yesteryear taking pride of place.

The original brick floor leads you to a delightfully sheltered courtyard, with grapevines creating a canopy.

A more recent addition to the venue is the big barn. Capable of seating up to 250 guests, this building has been built in keeping with its brothers.

As you enter through the timber doors, your eyes are lifted to the exposed timber ceiling, with incredible feature lighting.

A tidy earner under Wheeler cessor Alan Bollard’s second term.

The government introduced a new dividend policy for the Reserve Bank in 2009 that included foreign exchange movements when calculating the distribution if there was an expectation gains would be crystallised.

The central bank’s open foreign currency position, which reflects the moving valuation, shrank $100m to $2.9b as at June 30 from a year earlier.

Wheeler said the bank continued to operate within a tight fiveyear funding agreement, which finishes in 2020. Operating expenses were flat at $68.8m.

The board’s report on Wheeler and his team, signed by chair Neil Quigley and deputy Kerrin Vautier, was largely upbeat saying they “performed to a high standard in carrying out their functions and discharging their responsibilities during the past year”.

On monitoring the central bank’s relationships, the board noted it was a “continuous process” and that it took “a number of opportunities to observe how these were operating in practice, paying par-

Giant Auckland tower planned Hengyi Pacific, the company planning a 57-level tower in downtown Auckland, has already built two Melbourne super-towers and is well under way with a third.

And now it has big plans for its sitein Auckland.

Although many Auckland apartment projects have been cancelled before construction began, Hengyi – one of Australasia’s largest highrise unit specialists – appears set on going ahead.

The $300 million Pacifica project would be New Zealand’s tallest apartment tower.

Construction is due to start next

month, near Auckland’s waterfront. Dean Fossey, a Hengyi Pacific director who is based in Melbourne, this month showed what the company has done across the Tasman, and revealed more detail of its Auckland plans.

“By March next year you’ll be starting to see the structure rising,” he said.

Features of Hengyi’s two existing Melbourne towers give an indication of some of the elements planned for the Auckland boutique hotel/apartment tower, on a site between Commerce St and Gore St, a block from the waterfront in the

Britomart area. Hengyi’s first Melbourne project was The William, an office block conversion of two adjacent buildings – a 23-storey tower on William St and a 21-storey building in Little Bourke St. That has an outdoor pool and a hotel.

That was followed by the Light House project on Elizabeth St in the Melbourne CBD. The newly opened 69-level, 607-apartment tower is distinctive for its colour and angular floor plates.

It has almost a Rubik’s Cube look, making it stand out strongly on the city skyline.

The annual loss included a non-cash depreciation charge of $5.9 million on its stage 1 infrastructure. “The company is likely to continue to report accounting losses in the early years of its operation due to the very high depreciation charge from its large asset base,” chairman Doug Catherwood says in report.

Central Plains Water, a company set up to irrigate farmland in Canterbury, said it will continue to record losses in its annual accounts because of the steep depreciation charges during the early years of operation.

The company, whose shareholders are participating farmers and include owners such as Hong Kong-based An Feng Dairy and Fonterra Co-operative Group, reported a loss of $8.4 million in the year to June, narrower than last year’s $10.7 million loss. Central Plains had $20.3 million of income, up from $18.8 million in 2016, of which operating income was relatively stable at $15 million and grants totalled $5 million.

million, of which $5.5 million went to service its loans from ANZ Bank New Zealand and Westpac Banking Corp. That’s up from interest costs of about $8 million last year. Total interest-bearing debt rose to $182 million from $148 million the previous year and it has undrawn construction facilities of $178 million to complete its build.

So far, Central Plains has completed stage 1 of its scheme, which irrigates about 20,000 hectares of farms in an area bordered by the Rakaia and Hororata Rivers. It has an intake on the Rakaia River that sends water into a 17km gravityfed headrace, from where 100km of underground pipes distribute water to shareholders downstream of the headrace. One of Wheeler’s more ardent critics was Bank of New Zealand head of research Stephen Toplis, whose commentary ahead of the May monetary policy statement earned a sharp rebuke from the then-governor to Toplis’s boss, BNZ chief executive Anthony Healy, seeking to rein in the critical tone.

Wheeler refused to comment on the exchange, Quigley said it wasn’t something he would talk about in public, and Finance Minister Steven Joyce shied away saying it was a matter for the governor.

The Reserve Bank’s total returns under former governor Graeme Wheeler’s stewardship hit $990 million.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand kept its dividend largely unchanged in the 2017 financial year, taking the total returns under former governor Graeme Wheeler’s stewardship to $990 million.

The Wellington-based central bank reported a surplus of $155m in the 12 months ended June 30, up from $52m a year earlier, as it booked smaller unrealised foreign exchange losses of $66m from a 3 per cent appreciation in the tradeweighted index.

In 2016, that unrealised loss was $201m. The Reserve Bank paid a dividend of $145m to the government, up from $140m.

The central bank is self-funding through the substantial pool of assets it holds, and its funding agreement with the minister of finance sets out how much of that income can be retained to meet its operating costs.

During Wheeler’s five-year term as governor, the central bank paid $990m in dividends to the Crown or 83 per cent of the $1.2 billion of surpluses it generated. That compares to $1.5b, or 94 per cent of the $1.59b of surpluses, in his prede-

W

e are still a country that is very much divided.

Almost a full week on from the day that was supposed to give us some clarity and a way in which to carry on with our lives, we are still none the wiser.

An election day is built up as this massive event. A day in which the nation can sit and wait with anticipation.

It’s almost like have a few dollars on a horse down at the pub on a Saturday afternoon, you throw your money over the counter – not really knowing what is going to happen – and hope you back a winner.

Yet there’s this real flat feeling among people at the moment as Winston takes his time making a decision on which party New Zealand First will join with in coalition to form the next, or new government.

It’s understandable that Winston would want to take his time.

It’s a big decision.

But that we are still waiting for special votes to be counted and can expect almost another full week before that’s done seems downright ludicrous.

On Election Day more than two million votes were counted within the day – yet we are forced to wait two weeks for just under 400,000 to be counted.

And people are starting to get frustrated.

There’s plenty of online commenting being done by both sides of the coin – each feeling their opinion is just as valid as another and there’s not a hope that either side are going to back down.

But in serious moments, there’s always humour and the image of Winston Peters holding a pack of Winfield Blue cigarettes and Winfield Red cigarettes asking which pack he should use is one of the best things I’ve seen since last Saturday.

Eventually we will get there.

Eventually we will have a government formed.

But we are going to have to wait that little bit longer whether it might be right, or it might be wrong. All we can pray is that come the time for a decision, the outcome is one, irrelevant of the decision, that is for the betterment of this country as whole.

Not just a select few or a particular type of Kiwi, but every Kiwi from the far north to the deep south.

Jury still out, and likely to be until at least October 12 O

nce more we we wait on Winston. If only the Greens would bend, only slightly, their stiff necks, Winston and his eight colleagues could be banished to the archives of history and National would acquire a semi comfortable majority.

Readers of this column will know I have been calling for such a move from the Greens all year, even if without much hope of a suitable Green response. As I have repeatedly asked, what is the point of settling for opposition in perpetuity? Better a slice of your manifesto cake than none at all.

Much of the Green approach to the environment would be positively welcomed by elements of National and if survival in Government depended upon it it would suddenly become overwhelmingly attractive. The Maori Party may have been snuffed out on Saturday – but don’t rule out a come-back, especially as the great Tariana Turia is said to be about to come out of retirement and return to the fray – but in its nine years hanging grimly to the National coat tails and with its tiny numbers, it nevertheless punched way above its weight to the considerable benefit of its Maori constituency.

Such a path could now be the Greens. They should follow it before the “offer” is withdrawn and we have to go back to waiting for Winston to find out which bauble of office he fancies this time round.

Northland seat – hardly designed to make him look with favour on his now National suitors – it must be acknowledged that twenty-one years on since he was first in this king-making position, Winston Peters finds himself in it again. It may, understandably, get up the collective noses of the other parties but it must also be seen for what it is, a remarkable story of political survival and skill.

That there is talk of his joining the party prepared, in some way, to give him a taste of prime ministerial power, is hardly surprising. That would be the ultimate bauble and for him, somehow, to get his hands on even a part of it would bring him much joy and the feeling the years of wheeling and dealing had all been worthwhile.

It is not at all clear how Labour or National could offer him such a taste but perhaps the back room boys and girls of both groups are even now working on just such a scheme. Winston’s thinlydisguised vanity would then be satisfied once and for all.

Having happily given Peters great credit for his political longevity, it must also be said that

despite 93 per cent of the voting public using their ballots for other parties, the extraordinary eccentricities of MMP – always said to be the most wonderfully democratic of all voting systems – has brought him to this “make or break” point, where we await his bidding and his chosen bauble. Was such a scenario really supposed to be part of the grand design the wise men of the electoral commission had in mind when they first recommended this system in the early nineties, and we voted for it in a subsequent referendum? I doubt it.

MMP remains as flawed a procedure as it always has been and that despite at least one letter-writer claiming the situation we are now in as evidence of its efficacy. Not in my book it isn’t.

To see the party hierarchies kowtowing and gushing before one all-powerful leader, is not a pretty sight and likely to confirm the world’s opinion of New Zealand as a quaint backwater locked in some 1950s time-warp.

Now here comes painstaking Paddy (Gower) again, this time with his own chilling take on Winston’s raging desire for “Utu” (revenge) on the National Party for unceremoniously dethroning him from the Northland seat he won with such fanfare a mere two years ago. It looks as if “Prof” Gower is telling us to expect a Lab/Green/ NZ First grand alliance emerging from the protracted negotiations that lie ahead. Peters has, at once, described “our” Paddy’s dark

theory as pure make-believe and piffle, but then the old fox could be bluffing. After all. He has been known to do that now and then during the past 40 years!

Looking back for a moment, it now seems “Prof” Paddy Gower’s “rogue” Newshub poll in the last days of the campaign, suddenly elevating National to a 10 point lead over Labour, was not a rogue after all. He was right! The other polls were not. So that is why National, amazingly, retained the percentage it gained when it first took office in 2008.

Whichever way you look at it farmer Bill “fought a good fight” against the winsome charm of Jacinda, an opponent for whom he had not bargained when the election cycle began. At a stroke, he found himself facing a very different opponent from the worthy but uninspiring Andrew Little, around whom he had been running rings.

So stalemate reigns, as it was always likely to. The media will simply have to find something else to talk and write about as the negotiation ritual plays out.

Until the special votes are all in and counted no decision can be expected. Peters just cannot be rushed.

The Lord’s Prayer ften we have defining moments in our Christian journey; one of the major ones for me came a number of years back when looking at the whole area of prayer. Reading in Matthew 6:9 “The Lord’s Prayer “and Jesus own words – “This then is how you should pray”; changed not only my prayer life but much in my own life.

Researching this I came to discover that many of the great men and women and church movements throughout history that have greatly impacted the world had discovered this and had made the prayer the basis of their devotional life. These include such people as General Booth of the Salvation Army, John Wesley of the Methodist movement. One

Hammers not resting on laurels

Despite flying high after two massive wins in the context of their season, Mid Canterbury Hammers coaches Craig Dunlea and James Jowsey are keeping their players grounded ahead of their remaining games this season.

The Hammers travel to the North Island this weekend to take on Thames Valley in Paeroa.

“It has been great and it has been good to come off a win like that, but we have been working on keeping the boys grounded as we still have a lot of work to do,” Dunlea said.

Paeroa has not been a happy hunting ground for the Hammers in the past, losing both of their previous games there, while the Swamp Foxes have been in fine form this season.

They share the same record as

the Hammers, with their losses coming against Wanganui and Horowhenua Kapiti, losing those games by two and three points respectively.

“It is going to be a tough one.

“They have a bloody big pack and the weather isn’t looking to great along with the pitch not being to flash up there, those are probably things that will count for them,” he said.

“We can’t worry about that, we just have to focus on our processes and make sure we get them right.”

The Hammers have only made one change to the starting fifteen that performed so well against Wanganui, with the more experienced Adam Stewart replacing 20-year-old Tom Heywood at loosehead prop.

Heywood drops to the bench, joining the returning Tomas Hanham-Carter, who recovered from

the knock he picked up at the Jock Hobbs Under 19 Memorial tournament, and Isireli Masiwini, who was injured in the first ten minutes of the first game of the season against Poverty Bay. “He (Hanham-Carter) trained all week and it is good to get him back in the squad as he was playing some good footy before he left,” Dunlea said.

“He (Masiwini) will be coming back off the bench and will bring a bit of size and will hopefully allow us to carry on.”

After back to back losses against North Otago and South Canterbury, things were looking negative for the Hammers, but they have been able to work their way back in to Meads Cup contention, but Dunlea believes the job isn’t done yet.

“We talked about our backs being against the wall and having

to fight our way out and we have done that and put the performances in,” he said. “It isn’t over yet and we are going to have to work game by game, but if we follow our processes we can do it.”

In other games around the competition, South Canterbury will look to extend their lead at the top of the table when they travel over the Southern Alps to take on the West Coast.

North Otago will play host to a high-flying Poverty Bay side who are coming off their first win of the season, while Wanganui will look to recover from back to back losses in their game against the King Country.

Buller travel north to take on the lowly East Coast, while Horowhenua Kapiti will look to keep their strong form going in their game against Wairarapa Bush at Westpac Stadium on Sunday.

Patience personified Matt Todd has spent the bulk of his career on the fringes of the All Blacks, but has no gripes ahead of a rare test start in tomorrow’s clash against Argentina.

The Crusaders flanker first made the All Blacks in 2013 but will make just his fourth test start in the Rugby Championship match in Buenos Aires.

The 29-year-old had to bide his time behind former captain Richie McCaw and Sam Cane, but says his attitude never wavered despite often being overlooked for selection.

“If you drop your lip or sulk when you’re not in this team it’s not going to do you any favours and it’s not going to help you take an opportunity if it does present itself,” said Todd.

“So no matter where it is or who I’m training with or for I just try to work hard and put my best foot forward and just try to get better all the time.”

It took five years before Todd made his first run-on appearance for the All Blacks, that was against the Springboks in

Durban last season.

He backed up to start against the Wallabies at Eden Park, producing a man of the match performance in the 37-10 win, and was called on again for the end of year clash against France.

Despite a lack of game time over the years, Todd insists he’s never been tempted to leave New Zealand to take up a lucrative deal with an overseas club.

“I guess

there’s more to footy than just money or playing overseas,” he said.

“And I’ve got a young family so that always plays into consideration.

“In saying that I’d probably look at it at some stage, playing overseas and what not, but I enjoy my footy here whether it be for the Crusaders,

Canterbury or when I’m in this environment.

“So every time your contract’s up you weigh it up and there’s pros and cons and I’m signed until next year so no doubt sometime in the future I’ll weigh that up again and make a decision that’s best for my family.”

The All Blacks have held their final major training session of the week overnight, and will cap their preparations with their captain’s run today.

Pumas make four changes for All Blacks Argentina have recalled veteran No.8 Juan Manuel Leguizamon among four changes to their team to face the All Blacks in Buenos Aires tomorrow.

Winless in their four Rugby Championship tests, Pumas coach Daniel Hourcade has turned to 34-year-old Leguizamon to make a difference against the unbeaten visitors.

A British study into ageing has found that rugby players are more likely to suffer from osteoarthritis and require joint replacements than the general population. The study compared 259 former elite male rugby players to non-rugby players and found that the former rugby players were more likely to report health and mobility issues related to their joints. Osteoarthritis was four times higher and joint replacement six times higher than the general population.

International rivalry Four members of the Jennian Homes Swim Team will be swimming against some of the best New Zealand swimmers next week at the New Zealand Short Course Championships.

Middleton and Jared Scammell will all compete in Auckland at the Sir Owen Glen Nation Aquatic Centre next week.

The competition will last for five days, with a record number of 796 competitors entered.

Not only will they be facing off against swimmers from New Zealand, competitors from Australia, Tahiti, Fiji, Brazil, the Cook Islands, Germany and Slovakia are entered.

The competition starts on

Tuesday, with the final day of racing on Saturday.

The mornings will host the age group finals, followed by the open finals of the top 40 swimmers in each event in the evening.

■ OPINION

Boxing’s bad rap undeserved - sometimes O ver the last couple of weeks we’ve seen a whole lot of the bad side of the sport of boxing, and, well, not that much of the good, despite our own world champion Joseph Parker hanging on to his world title.

Importantly for him, it opens the way for bouts against the very best, the likes of Deontay Wilder and eventually Anthony Joshua, although the vast majority of experts opine that on current form Parker wouldn’t be staying upright for too long if he stepped in the ring with Joshua.

Boxing is a much-maligned sport, and all the doctors and sports medicine experts lined up against it would appear to have a point – the main aim of the contest is to hit the opponent so hard in the head that his brain smashes from side to side in its little protective cocoon until it is bruised so much it gives up

the ghost for a while, leaving its owner unable to operate any motor skills whatsoever and therefore losing the contest.

I did learn, many years ago, that there is a flip side to the coin however.

There is a science, and an art, to boxing; throw in a need for supreme discipline and physical fitness and there’s plenty on the credit side.

That’s not counting the strange attraction the pugilists have always been able to engender among vast numbers of the world’s population; the thought of two fighters going at it hammer and tongs until one is battered into submission appeals to a deep, dark and primeval part of every human’s brain.

But that part of it doesn’t seem to affect our champion.

and humorous young man, well up for the position of role model for young fellas from South Auckland, or any other deprived area in New Zealand, to show just what can be achieved with a whole lot of old-fashioned hard work.

He has picked a tough sport to excel in though.

Let’s go way left-field and compare it to cricket.

Sure, a top batsman is in danger of getting hurt with every thunderbolt he faces from the fast men. But he has the ‘luxury’ of around .4 of a second to decide whether to duck and weave; defend with a straight bat, or

actually consciously think about scoring a run from the delivery, and then he can sit back and breathe for a minute before the next rocket arrives.

The boxer faces more danger from punches coming even faster, and then of course there’s no time to relax as there’s another one coming a split-second later, from a different direction, and if one of those early ones lands properly, then there’s going to be a massive flurry heading your way which you are in a muchdiminished state to deal with.

Parker may have the goods to compete with the top guys; we shall see in the next year or two.

The other dark side of boxing is that gang of distinctly dodgy individuals in the boxer’s corner.

The mind boggles with what they come out with, and it was all on show in the last few weeks, from both sides, and that’s the bit that really gives boxing a bad rap.

Huddersfield manager David Wagner has no special plans to stop Harry Kane when his Premier League newcomers host Tottenham. Kane has scored 11 goals in his last seven matches for club and country and has been compared to the world’s best strikers following his midweek Champions League hat-trick against Apoel Nicosia. Wagner, though, warned Tottenham are not a one-man team as the Terriers bid to extend their unbeaten Premier League home record.

Colt’s future on the line Crunch time is looming in Australia for the Group One performer Summer Passage.

The Matamata-trained threeyear-old’s performance in the Gr.3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) on Sunday will decide his immediate future across the Tasman.

“It’s a crash-hot field and we’ll know exactly where we are after the race,” said Lance O’Sullivan, who prepares the Snitzel colt with Andrew Scott.

“The run was a lot better than it looked,” O’Sullivan said.

“He was a bit lost down the straight and Mark Zahra had to

take a hold of him when Limestone fell.”

Three women from Ashburton are set to join others from Mid Canterbury and around New Zealand in competing in the Torpedo7 Spring Challenge in Geraldine this weekend.

The event is an all-women adventure race, which allows teams or individuals to test themselves in three, six or nine-hour events, involving a broad range of skills including white water rafting, cycling, hiking and navigation.

Team ASH, consisting of Ange Leadley, Heather Phillips and Steph Ching will be competing in the six-hour event.

All three have competed in the Spring Challenge before, but it is the first time they will be attempting the six-hour event together.

“You say every year is your last and last year I was supposed to do it but both of my team-mates got injured so I didn’t do it,” Phillips said.

“It is a challenge. It is about pushing yourself but there is also a real team element to it,” Leadley said.

“I would recommend it to anyone who was thinking about it, you will probably hate it while you do it but afterwards it is really rewarding.”

While they have entered the six-hour event, that is only a minimum time, and the group said in an ideal world they would finish in around eight hours, but just finishing, having a few more stories to tell and still being friends afterwards is the main goal.

While they do not often get time to train together, Phillips said they were generally doing something individually each night as training.

“You want to make it as painfree as possible,” she said.

The addition of navigation element is something quite unique, the group said.

Handy Man CASUAL LIVESTOCK/ARABLE FARM POSITION PGG Wrightson Ltd is acting on behalf of our client who is seeking a Casual Farm Employee. The 550 ha property runs a livestock breeding and finishing business and an arable operation and is 20km NW of Ashburton.
