Court news P6
A blitz on distracted drivers saw Ashburton police dish out more than 10 times their usual number of tickets for motorists using cellphones while behind the wheel. While police would usually only issue a couple of cellphone infringement notices in the district per week, up to 80 tickets were issued to motorists in Ashburton over the two-week operation. Highway Patrol sergeant Steve
Burgerhout was not impressed by the number of motorists caught out. “It’s very disappointing, the number of people that think they can do that,” he said. “It’s very deliberate. They know they’re not supposed to do it but they do it anyway.” The nationwide operation was launched after police became concerned at the increasing number of drivers using cellphones behind the wheel. Ministry of Transport data shows that in 2014, “diverted attention” was
identified as a contributing factor in 1053 crashes which resulted in 22 people being killed and a further 191 sustaining serious injuries. Legislation banning the use of cellphones while driving came into effect in November 2009. Despite that, people had a “laissezfaire” attitude towards flouting the rules, Mr Burgerhout believed.
