The Ashburton District is proving its worth as a happy Lotto hunting ground with a large number of major prizes falling the way of locals this year.

Information provided to the Ashburton Guardian this week confirmed 27 first or second division Lotto or Powerball wins already for the calendar year in a rare run of form with a huge number of winning tickets being purchased through the MyLotto App. And while none of the big prizes of this year have gone to the district, there have been two division one successes netting their recipients $333,333 and $500,000 respectively.

While the numbers look good for an entire calendar year already compared to previous years, making the number of successes even more impressive is that the first for the year didn’t come until the last weekend in February – meaning the 27 wins have come in just over seven months.

That equates to almost one a week, since the first for the year in February.

The luck has extended to multiple success in draws on four occasions – the most significant of which was on August 12 when three local players shared in a $17,893 win – two of which were purchased through MyLotto and the third at Ashburton New World.

Other double luck came four days earlier on August 8 when

one player won $25,448 for a second division Powerball win and another claimed $13,990 in Lotto second division.

On May 13, two players netted $25,641 with a second division win, while last weekend another two lucky players claimed $19,140.

“It’s one of those moments in your life where you don’t really believe what you’re seeing.

“And it’s one that you never for-

get either.”

A regular player, in both the Wednesday and Saturday draws each week, they’d used their win to square the ledger on some debt and had also treated themselves to a trip away – around New Zealand, with Covid-19 restrictions stopping them from their first choice destination – Rarotonga.

“You wouldn’t call it a lifechanging amount of money, but it was enough to make a real difference to our situation.”

Twenty-one of the district’s 27 wins were purchased through MyLotto with a real push to online purchasing through Level 4 Lockdown when retail outlets were closed across the country.

Moving into forever home

Six years ago establishing a hospice in Mid Canterbury was Jane Wright’s dream; today that dream has become a community organisation, that is now serving its community from its forever home.

Yesterday Hospice Mid Canterbury volunteers and staff became moving crew for the day as they shifted the organisation from rented premises in Park Street to the building that previously housed the Sealy Street Medical Centre. And that move effectively future-proofs the service, Wright, a trustee, said.

In the five years since the service officially opened its doors, it has grown from very small beginnings in a single room at Community House, then moving into community rooms at St Stephen’s Church.

Securing a permanent base, however, has always been the organisation’s goal, she said.

The medical centre became available when its services relocated to Eastfield Health in the Ashburton town centre, and building owner Murray Wackrow decided to put the vacant property on the market.

As a hospice supporter, Wright said he was keen to see the service secure a permanent home and struck a deal that allowed the service to lease the property while they raised the funds needed to buy the building.

“Murray and Leigh have been absolutely amazing. Our future is secure now and we can set up our services the way that works best for our clients. We have privacy here and that’s important, but it also gives us a community profile,” she said.

Fundraising and work on grant applications to secure funds to buy the building was under way, and the rental period would allow the team to think about how the building could be changed to best meet client needs, Wright said.

“The more people in the community that get behind this the better, from the philanthropy campaign to small donations. It’s a community-owned asset and I want people to feel they have ownership of it.”

A combination of client need and community support had allowed hospice to come a long way in a relatively short time, she said.

“And now we’re in our own building.

District’s population inching upwards

Hospice general manager Debbie Mackle said the move was an exciting one for the service and while it might have been chaos yesterday, it would be back to busi-

ness as usual today, with exercise classes and usual services resuming.

“It’ll be a busy few months for us now, but this is the most amazing building, with amazing energy. Being here will allow us to provide an even better service to our clients,” she said.

After years of being touted as one of New Zealand’s ageing population hot spots, the Ashburton District is now one of the more youthful in the South Island.

Statistics New Zealand’s latest population data puts the district’s average at at 38.8. Most of the South Island’s territorial authority areas have an average age of 40 plus. The lowest average age is in Queenstown Lakes, 34.1, Dunedin 36.6 and Christchurch City 36.9. Buller has the oldest population average age at 51.7 years.

And in terms of the percentage of its population aged 65 and over, Ashburton can no longer claim to have one of the country’s fastest growing number of retirees. Over 65s might make up 18.2 per cent of the district’s population, but that’s well below most parts of the south, where the average is above 22 per cent. In Buller over 65s make up 26.4 per cent of the population.

The district’s population growth has slowed, increasing by just 1.1 per cent over the year to June 30 to sit at 35.400.

With a drop in natural increase numbers, the population increase has come largely on the back of international migration – 310 people, almost 100 up on 2019. Internal migration saw a loss of 90 people.

Ashburton’s population growth was lower than many parts of the South Island, with Queenstown Lakes and Selwyn at 5.8 per cent and 5.2 per cent respectively.

Waimakariri, Central Otago and Mackenzie were all at 3 per cent growth or higher.

As a region, Canterbury’s population increased 2.2 per cent over the year to June 30.

Over the past year, the greatest increase in the district’s age groupings has been in 15 to 39-year-olds who now make up 34 per cent of the population at 11,100, 30.6 per cent of the population is aged 40 to 64, 20 per cent 0 to 14 and 18.2 per cent, 6400 people, are aged 65 and older.

After 200 years of service, it’s time to go

Between them, five members of the Hinds community have given more than 200 years of their lives as the driving force that’s kept their community hall in business.

But they say it’s time for others to step up, to take over. They’re part of a larger group who dreamed, planned, fundraised and worked tirelessly to see the village’s old hall, built in 1910, replaced with a larger facility, built to meet the community’s modern day needs.

The community centre’s annual meeting is tonight and long serving committee member Stuart Wilson hopes there’ll be a good turnout with a few younger people keen to join the committee. The five who’re there now have been on board since the hall opened in 1983 – some even longer, he said.

many people who have given time to the committee, Wilson said, but the time had come for the remaining stalwarts to call time on committee duties.

“Another generation of people

is needed now – in fact I think we’ve skipped a generation. Most of us are now living in town, it’s time for a new committee,” he said.

When the community decid-

ed its original hall, built in 1910, needed to be replaced, the community did what rural communities do, they rolled up their sleeves and started fundraising, Wilson said.

A catering committee, led by Rosa Bennett (still a committee member) was formed and a host of fundrasing activities were undertaken. The community opened its hearts and its wallets.

“People gave us debentures and we said we’d pay those back 10 years after the hall opened, but when we went to do that, they just said, ‘no, forget it’.”

The new hall was completed in 1983, about 10 years after planning started. It came in at a cost of just over $100,000, but building the same hall today would see no change out of $1 million, he said.

While the original hall was dedicated as a memorial hall, the soldiers’ memorial moved to the Hinds community pool when the new hall opened, and that’s

meant most of the money needed for repairs and maintenance has to be raised locally, Wilson said.

The hall recently received a grant of $15,000 from the Ashburton District Council and that money will be spent on fixing roof, spouting and water pipe leaks. Completing that work and planning for the future needed the energy and enthusiasm of a new team of committee members, Wilson said.

“This is a great hall, a well used hall and it’s the heart of the community. We’ve all been involved since fundraising first started and it’s time for us to go.”

For over 110 years the hall has been its community hub, used for a wide range of activities including balls, cabarets, film evenings, talent quests, sporting events and for a time, as a general practitioner’s consulting room and Plunket room. It hosted the district’s peace celebrations in 1945.

The Hinds Community centre annual meeting is tonight at 7pm.

Dull can be critically important T

his week our district councillors took a look at a document that could change the shape of Ashburton’s town centre.

That document was proposed plan change 4 to the Ashburton District Plan.

Sounds boring, but wrapped up in the millions of words within that document are a raft of regulations that are designed to revitalise the town’s central business district.

It’s about ensuring the right things are in the right place and that disincentives to do business, town centre, are removed.

It’s a plan change that’s being undertaken for all the right reasons. It has its origins in a report prepared last year on the state of the town centre and the findings showed that plenty needed to change.

Ashburton was in danger of becoming a donut town with an empty centre and fragmented development around the edges. Old buildings had either been demolished or where slated for demolition, retailers were closing or moving out and fringe development was continuing apace.

By Sue Newman FROM THE PRESS BENCH The problems were clear, but doing something about them was not. In many ways it was clear the horse had already bolted.

Big box retail had found its home in several spots well away from the town centre, prompted in no small part by current size restrictions on developments in the heart of the town. That’s now part of history and the fragmentation this has created was fought tooth and nail by a number of community leaders over the years, none moreso than by retailer, the late Russell Anstiss.

He was an absolute advocate for retail development – regardless of size – staying within the CBD boundaries. He fought and lost, but his concerns have well and truly been vindicated. Today we are living with the legacy of that retail spread.

Too often in the past it’s been a case of the person with the money, the voice and the strong legal team getting what they want where they want. And we’re paying the price for that today in central Ashburton. Quite frankly, it’s dying.

The council’s spending millions on a revitalisation project but that alone won’t save the CBD. This plan change, however, late in the piece as it may be, will be a critical tool in stopping the rot.

We have to attract new businesses to town, we have to make it easy for them to come and we have to ensure they set up where we need them to be and that’s smack in the heart of town.

There’s no option. We have a handful of property owners who’re sitting on empty buildings or empty sites. Why would they bother reinvesting if planning rules make it too tough to attract tenants?

This plan change has a long way to go before it becomes effective, but let’s not ignore it. Since the last plan review we’ve had earthquakes, Covid, and economic uncertainty.

If there’s ever a time for change, it’s now.

In brief LIMs in hot demand Mid Canterbury’s hot housing market is seeing the Ashburton District Council’s building inspection team under pressure from people wanting compliance checks signed off and from requests for Land Information Memorandum (LIM). There has been a surge in demand in recent weeks and this is pushing request times up. While council staff are working to meeting request deadlines, short notice requests cannot always be met. They’re advising people to allow 10 working days for a report and to check that al lwork on their property has been signed off before going to the market.

Rakaia water upgrade Upgrades to the Rakaia water infrastructure that had been scheduled to start on Thursday night have been postponed and are instead programmed to get under way in 2021. The council has postponed raising the Rakaia bore water head above ground until a less disruptive time of year for residents. The work will be carried out during the April school holidays when water use levels generally drop back down after the peak summer period. The work is part of district-wide upgrades across the Council’s drinking water supplies. Residents will be notified of the disruption to service closer to the new start date.

New board boundaries Methven is growing and that has meant the Methven Community Board is looking to expand its rating catchment area. It has applied to the Local Government Commission to push those boundaries out to include an area bounded by Hobbs and Pudding Hill Road to the west and Mt Harding Road and Sam Holmes Drive to the north.

New Rakaia road A new 14 lot residential road in Rakaia will be known as Eliza Way. The road is off 54 West Town Belt.

Domain leases New 33 year leases have been granted to three users of the Hinds Domain – The Hinds Rifle Club ($100 per year), Bowling Club $229.70 per year) and Southern Rugby Club ($626.33 per year). The community is divided over the future of the concrete arbours, dubbed whalebones, in Ashburton’s Baring Square East.

As part of the redevelopment of the square that will gain profile when the district’s new civic centre and library are built on its eastern boundary, the Ashburton District Council asked the community what should stay and what should go when the square was redesigned.

The concrete structures were installed as an Ashburton centennial project in 1978, but the community has had a lovehate relationship with them ever since.

Feedback on the square’s redevelopment plan saw submitters divided. Some said they should stay, others said they must go.

In the final plan a compromise has

been reached, with designers Athfield Architects opting to remove several of the arbours, leaving just six to acknowledge their historic value and suggesting that appropriate lighting and planting would ensure they became a key feature in the final design.

There were no divisions when it came to the future of the John Grigg statue and the Lew Summers ‘love sculpture. Both were important features of the square and should remain, submitters said.

There were mixed feelings on the future of both the Legion of Frontiersmen and the Boer War Memorials, however, These were included in the concept plan but several submitters suggested they would be better suited to Baring Square west and join the civic cenotaph in the district’s commemorative square.

Relocating either would require extensive consultation and there would be processes and protocols to follow and

that meant the architects have opted to retain them in situ.

The central water feature will be retained and improved with with paving removed and shaded seating provided and through planting, lighting and paving the feeling of a civic plaza will be created.

There will be one-way traffic only on the eastern side of the square with entry from Cameron Street, with angle parking.

Community space will be a feature of the redesigned square with space for future markets and events The square concept plan was signed off at yesterday’s Ashburton District Council meeting and the final plan will now be drawn up.

A budget of $112,000 has been allowed for the detailed design work and the overall plan comes with a budget of $2.7 million, but estimates are this could run up to $3 million.

Home invasions A man appeared in the Christchurch District Court yesterday in connection with five separate home invasions in Upper Riccarton yesterday morning. The 45-year-old faces three charges of assault with intent to commit rape on a female over 16, five of burglary and one of strangulation.

He made no plea and Judge Quentin Hix remanded him in custody for three weeks while a lawyer is appointed.

Bringing job seekers and employers together

It could take three hours out of your day, but attending Ashburton’s job exchange could be the three hours that will change your life.

The district’s second job exchange that brings job seekers and employers together, will be held next month and its organisers are building on the success of the first event where more than one dozen new partnerships were built.

It’s an event that sees job seekers provided with an opportunity to meet with employers, to gain tips and advice that could give them the edge when applying for positions and the training opportunities that are available to boost careers.

For employers there’s a chance to learn about support services, the financial support that’s available when taking on a new employee and to find out the support and advice that’s available in the post Covid-19 environment.

The event is organised jointly by the Ashburton District Council and the Ministry of Social Development, with council people and capability manager Sarah Mosley saying the event

– Sarah Mosley was about creating opportunities, making connections and understanding how life had changed for both employers and employees in the post Covid workplace.

“For job seekers its about adjusting to the new norm, about moving forward in a positive way, about focusing on what you’ve got and challenging yourself in a way you may not have thought of, about how you can transfer your skills,” Mosley said.

The job exchange was for both people already in employment who may be looking for training opportunities or to change jobs and for people who were currently looking for work, she said.

There will also be a panel of employers available to talk with job seekers, to review CVs and to offer advice and tips on how to stand out from the pack when you applied for a job, Mosley said.

Job seekers will hear from others who have successfully pressed the reset button and pivoted their career and will learn how to refocus their life goals and how to exceed their expectations of what they can achieve.

For employers there will be information on the financial assistance that’s available when taking on a new employee or an apprentice. And apprenticeship assistance could be for a new employee

or for someone who was already in your workforce but who wanted to work towards a new qualification.

They will also hear about the current employment market, what to expect and how they can benefit from approaching that market as an open minded employer.

The exchange runs for three hours and after a short introductory session will see people split into employer and employee groups.

Everyone who attends is surveyed two weeks after the event and last year success was counted in 12 employer - employee matches. Those matches were made during the mix and mingle social half hour that wraps up the event.

As much as the event is about matching the two sides of the employment equation, it’s also about making contacts that may lead to employment opportunities in the future, Mosley said.

The event could also be of value to parents of potential school leavers, as it would enable them to find out what was available in the job market and the training opportunities on offer, she said.

It’s been a long time coming, but Tina Simply The Best will finally grace the Ashburton stage next week at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre, and it can’t come soon enough for the team at the embattled venue.

Boasting a near-full roster of events for 2020, the centre was in for a good year before Covid-19 struck and left the doors to the venue bolted shut.

Even now the impacts of the global pandemic are being felt, with a real lack of international acts coming onto our shores for performances which is making life tough for manager, Roger Farr and his team.

“We need this event, we really do,” Farr said this week.

“The fact it’s an international act too is a huge bonus. We had good strong interest early on, but there’s still plenty of tickets available.

“It would be great to see a full house for what will be an excellent show.”

Tina Simply The Best has come to New Zealand courtesy of Showtime Australia who are over the moon about being in New Zealand and touring after

cancelling their initial dates.

After arriving in early September, the cast completed 14 days in quarantine before hitting the road with their tour beginning on Saturday night in Palmerston North.

Ashburton is the fifth venue on the tour.

“It was devastating to lose the tour after so much effort had already been invested – most of our tours take 12-18 months of preparation and planning before we even get to show day – but safety had to be the priority and seeing how quickly things escalated we can’t help but feel lucky that we managed to get everyone home safe and sound at such a chaotic time,” said Showtime Australia boss, Johnny Van Grinsven.

Organisers said that Tina Simply The Best would give show-goers a much-needed opportunity to venture out and enjoy some quality live music.

It’s been promised and then on hold for two years, but finally the National Bowel Screening Programme has gone live in the Canterbury DHB’s area.

Free bowel screening kits for Canterbury 60 to 74-year-olds will start arriving in letter boxes around Canterbury from today and they have one simple goal – saving lives.

In Canterbury 90,000 people will be eligible to take part during the first two years of the programme and they’re being asked to take part in a campaign dubbed “start a movement that might save your life”.

Dr Andrew Brant, acting chief executive, Canterbury DHB said that screening was important because many people could be completely unaware they had a problem unless they were screened. For some, returning a sample could basically be a life saver.

“We anticipate that investigations prompted by returned tests will enable us to treat around 1000 pre-cancerous growths and 100 or so cancers in the first year. Finding and removing them at an early stage will dramatically increase people’s chance of a successful outcome.

Under the programme, people in the 60-74 age group with a birthday on an even date of the month) will receive a test kit on or near their birthday. People with odd-date birthdays will receive their test kit during the second year of the programme.

The test kit itself is about the size of a large USB stick, is easy to use and accompanied by clear instructions. It is designed to pick up tiny traces of blood in faeces to identify cancers before they become advanced and more difficult to treat.

During the wait for a test kit anyone with concerning symptoms should seek advice from their GP, he said.

When a person received a kit, they should use it, attach the unique label that identified the sample as theirs and post it back immediately.

New Zealand has one of the highest rates of bowel cancer in the world and 1200 people die from this disease each year. It is the second most common cause of death from cancer.

The disease typically affects older people, which is why the programme is aimed at people aged 60-74. The National Bowel Screening Programme is now being implemented in most DHBs and should be nationwide by the end of 2021.

Since it began in New Zealand just over three years ago, the programme has screened more than quarter of a million people and detected more than 700 cancers early enough for successful treatment in 90 per cent of cases.

In some way, the show must go on

T

oday we should have been gearing up for one of the biggest parties in town.

A two-day event, where the town meets the country and almost the entire district takes the opportunity to get out and catch up with old friends and enjoy the chance to take a wander and see what everyone else is up too.

But there is no Ashburton A&P Show for us to enjoy this year, sadly after it was cancelled due to concerns around Covid-19 and the impact it could have should the country be in some form of alert level.

Whether or not you see it as the right decision, it’s a bitter pill to swallow for the huge group of people who are involved in bringing the event to the district each and every year.

Hours upon hours of work go on behind the scenes to make an event like that happen, so to see that work pushed to one side by a power out of anyone’s control must have made the decision an incredibly tough one.

It’s a real shame for the fact it was a wonderful opportunity for this district to pay thanks to the one sector of life that kept on trucking through all the dramas of this year – our rural sector.

People I have spoken to outside of this district have been in awe at how well our rural community has kept trucking in the face of adversity, and popping along to say hello at the A&P Show would have been a great way to recognise their effort in keeping the Ashburton District ticking over through such turbulent times.

But, as they say, the show must go on. There’s still elements of the usual show going ahead and if you get the chance, it’ll be well worth checking them all out and seeing what it’s all about.

Events like dog trials, alpaca shows, highland dancing and even the recently invented Farm Machinery Expo that we detailed last week are there to enjoy and attend, so if you can – do so.

The show hasn’t gone forever, and you’d bet your last dollar that it will come back bigger and better than ever next year.

But it does feel weird not gearing up to head along today.

Nurturing young minds to make decisions on their future is a truly rewarding role to play. And it’s a role that helps Hoops leap out of the scratcher in the morning.

It’s good to be back!

I

would love to tell you that on Tuesday morning I lept out of bed at 4am totally refreshed and chomping at the bit to get into work after 10 days’ holiday.

It hurt!

Just as I got the body clock sorted and had stopped waking up at 4am, the holiday was over.

As predicted by my wife I had a rubbish sleep the night before as well. You know what it’s like when you return to work after a break and need to be up early, you can never drift off to sleep easily.

But a collection of little things has reminded me just how cool my job is and eased the pain of getting back into the swing of work.

Reminder number one is being the ‘vehicle’ that people can hop on when fundraising. It’s something I never take for granted, the ability to share information for people in need.

It came in the form of Maree Lawlor, who contacted me for help. She won a competition and had an autographed All Blacks jersey that she wanted to auction off for the local Cancer Society.

“Yes, absolutely I can help with that, but you will need to pop in for a chat on the radio to start the ball rolling,” I replied.

As of yesterday, at 11am, just 2 hours after the auction started the leading bid was at $700. The auction closes at 9am this morning and I hope we are over the $1000 mark.

Mid Cantabrians are very generous when it comes to getting behind fundraisers like this and the opportunity to bring the two parties together gives me some pretty good ‘feels’.

The other reminder was on the other end of the scale, nowhere near as serious or important.

Each year I have the local High Schools send in Gateway students.

They spend a morning a week for a term in the studio learning the ropes or watching ‘how it’s not supposed to be done’ as I call it.

These students are keen to get into broadcasting, and much like the young DJs that come in each week, they leave here each time more and more confident.

I’m probably shooting myself in the foot and one of them will end up pushing me out the door and stealing my show.

Hopefully the universe provides and they skip Ashburton and go on to be famous in other parts of the country.

The current ‘Apprentice’ (I probably shouldn’t call them slaves anymore) has got a heap of potential.

Sammie Mackle has a super personality and a great sense of humour. I’m sure she could have a long future in radio (anywhere but Ashburton).

As part of their time with me I give the apprentices a voice break to make their own. In the past others have focused on technology or new music, trying to drag the old boy into the 21st century.

Sammie has gone down a similar path and has been trying to teach me how to Tik Tok. In all honesty, it has evolved into the ‘Let’s see how embarrassing I can make Hoops look this week’ segment. I have made this very easy for her due to a lack of co-ordination and timing.

Plus, I even managed to call Tik Tok, Dik Tok on the radio a few weeks ago, much to her great amusement.

Well, yesterday I got my own back when I asked her to read a piece on air and she pronounced debut, “dee butt”. Well we both lost it, as you could imagine.

I shall be dining out on this for some time to come.

That’s the beauty about this job, sometimes it’s serious,

sometimes it’s funny, but most of all it’s always different!

he first New Rolls-Royce Ghosts have arrived in UK showrooms following a highly successful home-market debut.

After final inspection at the Home of Rolls-Royce in Goodwood, England, the motor cars were dispatched to the marque’s seven home-market dealerships; Edinburgh, Manchester, Bir-

mingham, Essex, London, Leeds and Sunningdale.

New Ghost is the result of exhaustive dialogue with the marque’s customers.

Many demanded a car that rejected unnecessary branding, affectation or obtrusive technology.

In response to this, the marque’s designers immersed themselves in spaces that reflected a minimalist approach to

statement design.

London played a particularly important role in defining the new Ghost’s design direction.

The capital’s landmark Shard building informed the reductive approach to aesthetic form that came to be internally known as Post Opulence.

Designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning architect Renzo Piano,

the building is widely praised for its monolithic yet simple forms delivered by highly complex engineering processes.

This echoes Ghost’s unique design and development process, where the client requirement for simplicity was delivered through cutting-edge engineering and manufacturing techniques.

Known as a prowl or a leap, this group of Jaguars – various older and younger models – doing just what their namesakes enjoy – napping under trees.

W

hen members of the South Canterbury Jaguar Car Club gathered in town for a recent event, they were delighted to discover local members Ray and Ruth Logan had planned a fascinating prowl for them.

The tour gave them an opportunity to see some local homes and gardens, with a focus on houses designed by the late Billy Thomas, who was a renowned local architect in days gone by.

Before starting out, the group heard Jill Shearer explain how she and husband Tony

arrived at their decision to purchase their Billy Thomas home, a home they love living in.

During the tour Jaguar Club members visited an absolutely amazing and fascinating urban garden which is not visible from the street. A real surprise!

From there they went on to enjoy a picnic lunch in a delightful country garden before ending their tour at Trott’s Garden.

yundai Motor Company this week revealed the first glimpse of its smallest EV yet, with a video sketching its unique and innovative construction.

This petite EV’s exterior style is based on the ‘45’ EV concept that Hyundai presented in 2019 at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt.

Hyundai’s designers adapted the signature ‘kinetic cube lamp’ design of ‘45’ along with its angular yet smooth profile to create this yet-to-be-named EV that sports a Performance Blue exterior colour with orange accents.

This ‘little engine that could’ packs two DC motors that push it to the blistering top speed of 7 km/h. Only the bravest souls will take the wheel of this speedster.

To boost driver confidence, Hyundai designers took inspiration from motorsports by placing just one seat in the middle of the car.

In keeping with the 45’s design heritage theme, Hyundai has built this unique passenger vehicle out of a traditional eco material – wood. This new EV does not have an officially rated driving range yet, but driver’s laughter is believed to fuel the vehicle to travel further based on its Emotion Adaptive Vehicle Control (EAVC) technology.

Punters were labelling star North Island jockey, Craig Grylls, Mr Reliable after the opening stages of yesterday’s Ashburton Racing Club meeting, which included a win on a horse with the same name.

Grylls produced two standout rides to win the opening two races of the day on the Stephen Autridge and Kris Shailer-trained pair Mr Reliable and Florentia – who won in similar circumstances.

Grylls had both horses positioned in perfect places, before finding clear air the right time and allowing them to surge toward the line to win.

Mr Reliable’s victory was a solid start

Craig Grylls picked up a hat-trick in the first three races at Ashburton yesterday.

The pair are owned by leading owner and industry participant, Kevin Hickman.

The day’s other hot favourite, Beauty Star, who is trained by Tony Pike, took out a strong field in the 2200 metre event on the programme after finding the lead.

Jockey Danielle Johnson was able to get the son of Northern Meteor to the top early and controlled proceedings from there, before he dashed away for a two and three-quarter length victory.

Chasing a presidential success

Gerard O’Reilly will have the weight of a presidency bearing down on him when he steps out onto the Methven Racecourse today with maiden pacer, Tyke.

But the Rakaia horseman isn’t too worried about the pressure, because he thinks he’s got a huge winning chance.

Tyke is bred and raced by Methven Trotting Club president, Mark Lemon, and getting a win for the big boss (O’Reilly is also part of the committee) would cap a great day out for the locals.

Tyke is the fifth foal of their former race mare, Harper Road who herself won four races.

Having her eighth start today, the daughter of three-time New Zealand Trotting Cup winner, Terror To Love, looks right on target for a maiden victory following her excellent effort for second at her last start.

“That was the best run she’s

produced,” O’Reilly said.

“She seems on the up, the confidence levels are growing and she’s getting better with each run.

“She probably looked like an early winner after some of her trials, but she’s taken a bit of time.”

Drawn handily on the front line, Tyke could be expected to take up a forward position and be tough to run down, with O’Reilly’s natural aggression in the bike sure to play a leading role in her chances.

“She’s a bit one speed, but that means we can drive her positively, I think if she’s near enough to them she’ll go close this week.”

O’Reilly had one other chance from his stable at the rapid-fire meeting, but he’ll be watching that one from the stand.

Daughter, Sarah – who this week turned 21 – will do the driving duties on board maiden trotter Yea You, who returns from a brief spell.

“He’s good, I snuck him up to Methven for a bit of a bowl around the other day.

“He might need a run, but on natural ability he’s certainly good

Ashburton College came up short in their second round ARA Championship One Day clash against North West in Ashburton on Saturday. The home team was put in first after North West won the toss. AshColl began somewhat promisingly at the top with opener Devon Flannery (above) getting a start with 25. Netball a no-go for the big O

T

he Silver Ferns celebrated the return of international netball with a 58-45 win over England in the Cadbury Netball Series opener in Hamilton on Wednesday.

I could delve into how the English netball team in the current Covid climate was able to swan into the country while migrant workers who contribute more to the economy cannot, but this is about sports not politics, but sport-politics.

In the lead-up to the series, I saw a discussion over whether netball should be at the Olympics.

My rapid-fire answer – no.

Scroll through comments for comparison, and procrastination, the decision seemed split, but the argument against it was stronger. The main reasons are its global reach, gender inequality, and the fact it has its own world cup already.

Netball is not played in enough countries – generally the Commonwealth ones – hence its inclusion in the Commonwealth Games.

Netball was a game that was a modified version of basketball, designed for women in early 20th century where they removed parts of the skill, athleticism and physicality to accommodate women.

It’s a highly-skilled athletic game in the modern era, but unfortunately, basketball is the one that captured global attention – and a space at the Olympics, for men and women.

There is no men’s international netball.

Only in the last year have they had televised matches – and that was only because they were playing the women.

There are two women-only clubs in the Olympic Games – rhythmic

gymnastics and synchronised swimming, and they have been exclusively female since they arrived in the Games in 1984.

There are many events in other sports at the games in which the two genders differ, such as women have the heptathlon instead of decathlon, and the weights used in discus and shot put, for a few quick examples.

Men have Greco Roman wrestling and baseball, and the Winter Olympics has Nordic combined – although the International Olym-

pic Committee (IOC) is working towards introducing in by 2026.

The bigger point of contention for me is that the Olympics should be the pinnacle event for the sports involved.

A lot of events currently on the roster have their own international series or world championships.

But the Olympics is what they spend four years working towards to chase the gold.

It would be the case for any sport included in the games but from where I sit, the Olympics needs to scale back and remove some of the ‘big sports’ that exist fine on their own, and have their own pinnacle.

Would a tennis player truly choose an Olympic medal over the likes

of a Wimbledon title – I think not.

Rugby Sevens has an established World Series now but the Olympics, previously the Commonwealth Games, is its pinnacle event.

Rugby 15s has its World Cup, as does hockey and football.

Men’s Olympic Football actually has a longer history than the World Cup, played at every Games since Paris 1900, with the sole exception of Los Angeles 1932. Before LA it was for amateur players only, and has since become an U23 competition with three over-age players allowed.

Its weird way to run it, especially considering the football World Cup is arguably as big in audience terms as the Olympics.

Circling back, it’s all political as to what sports get the nod – like ballroom dancing – and what doesn’t.

Netball shouldn’t be in the conversation, and the conversation should be about what other big sports need to be removed.

Locals dominate Midlands top ten

A healthy scattering of Mid Canterbury squash competitors have found themselves at the right end of the Midlands standings.

The current Midlands Circuit picture has four members of the Ashburton Squash Club in the top 10 and seven locals in the top 20 following this season’s tournaments.

Squash Midlands covers the central South Island area from Rakaia down to Oamaru, with 16 affiliated clubs.

Ashburton College’s Isaac Bazley, who is a junior at the Ashburton Squash Club, sits in fourth spot on 820 points, behind Flynn Brookland, Lily Rae and Oamaru’s Connor Bolitho.

Ashburton club trio Agustin Maunier, Matt Speedy and Brooke Cornish-Madden also find themselves in the top 10.

Local master Maunier most recently won the men’s open events at Rakaia and Hoon Hay, and claims a 71 per cent success ratio across 35 matches this season.

He sits in sixth spot with 700 points.

Senior star Matt Speedy is in eighth spot on 690 points, followed by AshColl junior Brooke Cornish-Madden.

Further back in the top 20 is Brenda Hall (15th), Rodrigo Resende of the Hinds club in 19th, followed

by Ashburton’s Darnell Lima.

“Great to see our club members dominating the Midlands Squash circuit,” it said in an Ashburton Squash Club Facebook post this week.

The club championships resumed last night, with a vibrant Halloween-themed finals night set to take place at its Harrison Street facility this evening.
