The 140th annual Ashburton A&P Show attracted big crowds and weather was near perfect for the two-day event.

Sun shines on Ashburton show Organisers of the 140th annual Ashburton A&P Show had plenty to smile about as they began the task of cleaning up yesterday.

Big crowds and near-perfect weather set the tone for two good days of show action with people flocking to the Ashburton Showgrounds from all around the region and afar.

A 20 per cent increase of heads through the gates gave credence to the feeling of such a large crowd, particularly on Saturday with thousands walking their way around the many stalls and displays on offer as well as taking in some of the countless entertainment opportunities on offer.

Watson, said on Friday that the success of the show was always down to what couldn’t be seen by the people attending.

“It’s the work of those behind the scenes that make an event like this a success,” he said.

“We are lucky, we have a very good team of people who are willing to put on a great event for everyone.”

After a reasonably sedate start on Friday, which is usually the traditional day for the farming community to get out and take in what’s on offer, Saturday boomed, with the sun streaming down on the showgrounds throughout the day.

Allan Jones from North Canterbury said he comes to the show every year.

“I always catch up with people that I

haven’t seen for a long time,” he said.

“But it is a well organised event and there is plenty on offer, that’s for sure.”

This year’s show saw a new layout for stalls and some of the events on offer which were widely well received by the public and also by those who were holding a site, or performing.

Country music star Jody Direen kept those in attendance entertained on Saturday afternoon with two performances while the annual highlight was, and always will be, the grand parade which always draws plenty of attention.

While Methven winds down from a busy ski season, its population once again shot up by several thousand, with rugby mad fans descending on the village for the Lochore Cup final between Mid

Canterbury and the West Coast.

Moved due to a clash the Ashburton A&P Show, the Methven’s Domain main pitch was transformed in to an arena ready to be broadcast to all of New Zealand, with the sun sending the temperatures well in to the 20s,

making sunscreen a must. Cars lined the surrounding roads, with fans looking to find the best parks possible, with just as many red and white West Coast shirts matched those in green and gold walking to the game.

Both sets of fans were in full

voice, with plenty of banners and comments about the refereeing heard throughout the game.

The result was not what the visiting fans were after, with the Hammers taking the victory 4715, but Methven put on a great show with the nation watching.

Every property in the Ashburton District carries a share of the Ashburton District Council’s debt.

For the year to June 30 that debt level sat at $3140 per property as part of an overall parcel of the council’s $47.5 million worth of public debt.

The council’s income for the year was $67.426 million and its total operating expenditure, $57.340 million, giving it a

$10.122 million operating surplus for the year. The surplus for the year was $2.7 million over budget due to forestry, land and investment property sales bringing in significantly more income than was budgeted.

The council’s financial performance, detailed in its annual report, has been audited. While it had met the goals of its financial strategy, there were a number of capital projects that were not completed and had been de-

ferred to the current year, chief executive Andrew Dalziel said.

The council had worked very hard during the year to balance levels of service with affordability and prudent financial management, he said.

“As an organisation, our successes come from the hard work and skill of many people including elected members, staff and volunteers and it’s wonderful to see what has been achieved through those efforts,” Dalziel

said. The council had budgeted an extra $650,000 of capital expenditure for roads, which was over and above the usual rehabilitation and maintenance work to ensure the roading network was maintained to a good standard, he said.

Council received an unmodified opinion of the Annual Report from Audit New Zealand. The report is available on the Council website www.ashburtondc.govt. nz

Police responded at around 2.30am to reports that a group of about 30 people were fighting in a street. A plan to build a new city with housing for 500,000 people on farmland to the south of Auckland has piqued the interest of the new Labour-led government.

The idea of a scale housing development at Paerata, a small settlement immediately to the north of Pukekohe, was presented in a discussion document at an Infrastructure New Zealand conference on Friday. Ferry staff have rescued a man who fell into the water from Princes Wharf in Auckland. Police were called around 5am yesterday, after reports a man was shouting from the water and needed help.

Senior Constable Martin Renouf of the Police Maritime Unit said ferry staff were pulling the 22-year-old from the water by the time police arrived, the New Zealand Herald reports.

Shop local for retail survival

Bricks and mortar retailers will be in a fight for survival if locals choose to spend their money out of town, says businessman Bob McDonald.

The trend towards online and out-of-town shopping is not new, but as Christmas approaches, McDonald is urging people to think about the way they do their gift buying. Shop local is still the message that needs to be pushed if Ashburton people want to keep retail alive locally, he said.

“We need to keep our dollars in Ashburton. Every dollar that’s spent out of town is gone for good and if people keep shopping outof-town or online then local retail won’t be here.”

Yes, there might be a greater choice in Christchurch, but most local retailers, if given a chance, would try to get items they may not stock for customers, McDonald said.

Ashburton had too many empty buildings now. It needed new retail blood, it couldn’t afford to lose the blood it had, he said.

“Like for like we’re competitive with any retailers anywhere and you don’t have to battle the crowds like you do in Christchurch malls and parking is now free for an hour on East Street.”

It was not just retailers who were losing if people shopped out of town, the community would also lose if stores closed, McDonald said.

“If you lose them, you lose jobs.”

“At Christmas most retailers stock as big a range of products as they can. Give locals a go. If you see something you like elsewhere, ask a local retailer if they can get it. We have a good range of retailers in Ashburton and people need to support them.”

If they lost business bigger retailers had the option of cutting staff but smaller one or two person businesses would often decide to shut up shop, McDonald said.

As a community Ashburton needed to do everything it could to attract new and different retailers to town and to support the ones it already had, he said.

McDonald’s comments come on the back of a drive by Retail NZ for people to keep their Christmas dollars in their own community.

Salmon fishery summit focus

The South Island’s troubled wild salmon fishery will be the topic of a two-day symposium being held in Ashburton next month.

Organised by Fish & Game, the public event will look at the declining number of salmon spawning, leading to a fall in the salmon population, which is concerning anglers.

Symposium co-chairman Matt Hall, a keen salmon angler himself, said he has seen the decline firsthand.

“Where anglers could once each catch plenty of salmon every season, the runs have dwindled to a shadow of their former glory,” he said.

“Everyone with a stake in the fishery should attend the symposium and explore what is contributing to the decline.”

Fish & Game North Canterbury region chairman, Trevor Isitt, who has also helped organise the event, said the symposium would provide an opportunity for local anglers to have their say.

“There is a real desire by anglers to get to the bottom of what is causing the runs of wild salmon to drop from their historic highs,” he said.

“While there is a lot of speculation and a wide range of theories, the exact reasons remain elusive.

“We want the symposium to help develop a solid and realistic action plan, which will see the magnificent runs of salmon restored to their past glory.”

The symposium, which is being held at Hotel Ashburton, begins on November 11 with an overview of the present salmon fishery by Fish & Game officer

Mark Webb, which will be followed by a key note presentation

by North American expert Dave Wills, who will provide an insight into experiences in that part of the world.

Other topics to be covered on the first day include what happens to juvenile salmon, salmon hatchery operations, angler impact and regulations, and what happens when adult salmon return.

The symposium’s second day, on November 12, includes workshops on spawning streams and freshwater production; the ocean environment; the role of Fish & Game, a salmon management plan, the season and angler harvests; and the Resource Management Act and consenting issues, fish screens, and water quantity, quality and allocation.

Learning skills to preserve the past

Ashburton has become a default hub for central South Island museums when it comes to holding workshops about preserving the past.

A workshop on managing collections was held last week and attracted representatives of small museums, galleries and heritage organisations from around Canterbury and the West Coast.

Two experts, Jane Groufsky and Lynne Carmichael, ran the National Services Te Paerangi workshop as part of an outreach programme from Wellington’s Te Papa.

Some at the workshop represented established museums but others were keepers of collections that had no official display space.

They were all there to learn about the key collection elements – developing a policy, assessing significance, acquisition and de-accession, cataloguing and protocols.

The message that was central to any collection was its story, Carmichael said.

“A collection is a museum in embryo. Managing a collection is about preserving the information as well as the physical object.

“You can collect all the things you want but if you don’t know their significance, the value is lost. The thing that brings museums and collections alive is their story,” she said.

Workshops on a range of subjects were held regularly across the country and travel grants were available for anyone who had to travel or stay overnight to attend one, Carmichael said.

Collections and their stories were invaluable in telling a community’s story and in creating a sense of connection and belonging for people who lived in that community, she said.

Violinist returns to Chch for concert

She’s a beloved Kiwi violinist who has forged an impressive international career – now Fiona Pears is returning to her hometown Christchurch for one “electrifying” show.

Pears will deliver a night of musical entertainment at St Margaret’s College on December 1 – her first major concert in the city since the 2011 earthquake.

Pears says she is excited to be putting on the show alongside old friends and local legends, including Tom Rainey on piano, Keith Petch on guitar, Greg Donaldson on drums and Michael

Davis on double bass.

The concert will be a celebration of the life of virtuoso French jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli, who passed away 20 years ago on December 1.

“He was a huge influence on my musical journey,” Pears said.

“His music will live on forever, that’s for sure.”

Pears has released six albums and two DVDs of her own to date, and performed alongside Kiwi artists including Dave Dobbyn, Hayley Westenra and Bic Runga.

New gallery on the arts scene

Sculptor Brent Holley has an innovative vision for the Ashburton arts scene, and come Wednesday it will be one step closer to reality.

Holley is about to open the doors to a brand new contemporary gallery in Dobson Street West, which he hopes will become a platform for local creative talent to shine.

“Ashburton has an artesian vibe but at the moment it’s just sitting under the radar,” said Holley. “There are some amazing creative people in Ashburton and it would be great to bring that out.”

Holley’s new gallery, named The Grace Gallery, will open this Wednesday, and showcase a variety of work from established local artists and up-and-coming artists who Holley wants to give a “leg-up”.

“For new artists the support can be tough to find, and not everyone is big enough to have their own exhibition.

“I’ve been saying for about three years that there’s nowhere for artists like myself to sell. I thought it would be a great idea for someone to open an organic gallery – and now I’m doing it myself.”

After three months of restoring

Through the work of sculptor Brent Holley the Ashburton arts scene is obtaining an exciting new addition – the Grace Gallery, opening this Wednesday.

“In the first days it will be as much about the space itself as the artwork,” said Holley.

He said one wall of the space

will star a monthly featured artist, who is looking to get their work off the ground.

Holley himself is a stone, wood and glass sculptor who enjoys creating pieces that “entice the senses” and attract people to reach out and touch them.

Hotel attack kills 23

A suicide truck bomb has exploded outside a popular hotel in Somalia’s capital, killing at least 23 and wounding more than 30, while gunfire continues as security forces pursued other attackers inside the building.

Two more blasts were heard yesterday when one when an attacker detonated a suicide vest.

Speaking to The Associated Press by telephone from the scene, Captain Mohamed Hussein said 30 people, including a government minister, were rescued from Mogadishu’s Nasa-Hablod hotel as heavy gunfire continued in the standoff between extremists and security forces.

Three of the five attackers were killed, Hussein said. The others hurled grenades and cut off the building’s electricity as night fell.

The blasts came two weeks after more than 350 people were killed in a massive truck bombing on a busy Mogadishu street in the country’s worst-ever attack.

Al-Shabab, Africa’s deadliest Islamic extremist group, quickly claimed responsibility for yesterday’s attack and said its fighters were inside the hotel.

Among the dead were a mother and three children, including a baby, all shot in the head, Hussein said. Other victims included a senior Somali police colonel, a former lawmaker and a former government minister.

Footage from the scene showed twisted vehicles and nearby buildings with only walls left standing.

Security officials say yesterday’s bomber had pretended his truck had broken down outside the gate.

Heaton denied US entry Stranger Things actor Charlie Heaton was denied entry into the US last week after trace amounts of cocaine were found in his luggage when he arrived in Los Angeles. A law enforcement official said a customs dog sniffed Heaton’s luggage when he arrived at Los Angeles International Airport last Saturday and officers found traces of cocaine. The official said Heaton, a British citizen, was refused entry into the US at the airport and returned to London. He wasn’t arrested because the amount wasn’t enough to warrant any charges.

Years to recover from California fires It will take at least months and likely years to fully recover from devastating wildfires that ripped through Northern California, destroying at least 8900 structures and killing 42 people.

Sonoma County Sheriff Rob Giordano said yesterday the impact would be felt for years.

“I don’t think we understand the level at which it is going to impact lives, and the community will be different.”

Giordano spoke before hundreds of people gathered at a college in Santa Rosa, one of the hardest-hit cities, for a memorial service to honour the lives lost in the deadliest series of wildfires in California history.

The fires sparked on October 8, eventually forced 100,000 people to evacuate.

Before a bell rung 42 times to commemorate the dead, Giordano and other officials praised the ordinary and extraordinary acts of heroism by first responders

and community members as the firefight raged on for more than a week.

Some firefighters worked days on the front line, refusing to take breaks, while sheriff’s dispatchers continued taking calls even as the fire came close to taking out their building.

Officials estimate the clean-up of debris and other hazardous materials will last into early 2018. The losses are estimated to be at more than $US1 billion.

Sopranos actress Annabella Sciorra is alleging she was raped by Harvey Weinstein after he barged his way into her apartment in the 1990s. Daryl Hannah, best known for her starring roles in films Blade Runner and Splash is also speaking out, saying the movie mogul once tried to force his way into her hotel room. The actresses were quoted in The New Yorker. Sciorra told the magazine that Weinstein had violently raped her in the early 1990s and, over the next several years, sexually harassed her repeatedly.

She said he “shoved” her onto her bed and they had nonconsensual sexual intercourse. Sciorra and Hannah are the latest in dozens of women who have spoken out against Weinstein.

ell done those behind the annual Ashburton A&P Show on the weekend, what another fantastic instalment of this long-standing staple of the Ashburton community.

To hear that there had been an increase in the number of people attending the show was another great slice of news and pats on the back should be given to not only the committee, but everyone who played a part in the show and what it had to offer whether it be as a stallholder, a performer or an entertainer.

There’s something really community strong about an event like the show. You bump into people you haven’t seen in a long time and meet new faces along the way, it truly is a must-do each year.

On a personal note, it was great to meet so many of our readers at the Guardian tent over the two days and have the opportunity to talk to you about what’s going on in our district.

From my perspective it was a great opportunity to talk with you about what we are doing with the newspaper in terms of our direction and also answer a few of your queries.

I really did appreciate each and every conversation I had.

I really now feel like I have a good sense of what you want from your daily news fix.

You’ve told me what grinds your gears and what makes you smile.

And with that knowledge we can now build and ensure that you are getting what you want from us.

If the public demand is for questions to be put to those in authority, then we want to be the paper to ask those questions for you.

If you want to know more about a local person doing incredible things, we want to be the paper to bring you that story.

It’s a case of finding the balance. Looking at things objectively and not being afraid to stop and say that something isn’t right here before going off and finding out why.

If we sat on our hands, and didn’t investigate and criticise or celebrate and profile then we wouldn’t really be doing our job.

A change of focus W

e now have a new government and, while I am personally disappointed by the result, especially in view of the strong level of support that National received from voters, I accept that this is the reality of our MMP system.

I became involved in politics to make a positive difference to the lives of New Zealanders and being in Government gives you the opportunity to do that by putting in place policies and allocating funding where you believe it will have a beneficial impact.

During the past six years I have been privileged to have held a number of important ministerial portfolios including Justice, Courts, Associate Finance, Communications, Environment, Social Housing and Responsibility for Social Investment.

It is saddening to realise that I will no longer be able to oversee the measures that I have put in place in these areas and see

them come to fruition.

The other difficult aspect of no longer being a minister is that I have had to say goodbye to my office staff in Wellington, whom I have respected and enjoyed working with over the past few years.

Some of these staff will go back to the ministries from which they were seconded but for others it means looking for new roles.

As a person who is passionate about New Zealand, I wish the new Government success.

With my experience as a minister I know that the business of being in Government is complex.

It is easy to make lofty promises.

Once you look deeper into the issues, you often find that what may seem like an obvious answer has broader implications that you may not have initially considered.

When new Governments come in they often want to put their own stamp on things.

Nevertheless, I strongly urge the new Government not to throw the baby out with the bathwater. For example, I hope that the work we have put in to tackle the root causes of family violence will not fall by the wayside.

I would like to see the new Government take up the challenge to make New Zealand predator-free by 2050.

These are just two examples from a long list of aspirational policies that have come out of the past nine years that I sincerely hope are not discarded just for the sake of change.

One thing that will not change,

however, is that I will continue to work hard to be the most effective local MP I can be for the people of this region.

I will make sure that the impact on our region of any proposed new policies, such as reducing the availability of skilled workers for our local businesses, is voiced in Parliament.

I guess it is a bit like being a netball player who is being switched from goal attack, where the aim is to get the ball up the court to score goals, to goal defence.

Despite the change in focus, I am still playing for the same team – Selwyn.

followed the signpost to Wild Horse Mountain, where a quick but thigh-busting 10 minute hill climb brings you to the summit watch-tower and a horizon-wide outlook.

The Esplanade has a swag of colourful cafes, juice bars and alfresco restaurants.

Welcome to the Sunshine Coast. It’s a red-letter year for the region, because it was 50 years ago that the Sunshine Coast officially received its name. Prior to 1967, the region was simply known as the “Near North Coast”, before the marketing wizards whipped out their wands.

With a plethora of alluring beachside hot-spots strung along the 100 kilometre coastal sweep, I plumped for Mooloolaba, for my first night’s stay.

Rimmed with a wide stretch of soft ivory sand and sparkling sea, Mooloolaba Beach consistently ranks as one of Australia’s best beaches.

Through a fortuitous quirk of nature, it’s one of the few East Coast beaches that actually faces north, amplifying its appeal with calm, warm ocean water, all-year round.

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the authentic beach spirit is to mix with the locals, over a meal or drinks, at the well-priced and familyfriendly Surf Club in Mooloolaba. Beautifully designed with panoramic windows, framed by surfboards, you could not get a better ringside view on the buzzy beach scene.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the Boathouse Restaurant in the Surf Club is showered with awards for its delicious con-

temporary Australian cuisine.

The seafood paella is a major house favourite.

Fringing the beach and festooned in fairy-lights, The Esplanade’s eye-catching spunk and glamour is radiantly manifest by the swag of colourful cafes, juice bars, alfresco restaurants and fashion boutiques, lining the street.

The Esplanade also boasts a much buzzed-about public toilet with in-built views across the Pacific surf.

I loved strolling along the boardwalk above the foreshore, wrapped around Mooloolaba Beach, where loved-up couples canoodle on rocky nooks, while fitness fanatics blithely breeze by.

Walk all the way to the towering promontory of Alexandra Headland, which pays tribute to the HMAS Brisbane. The warship was decommissioned and sunk just over a decade ago. Its funnels are just below the surface of the water and is a wildly popular dive site.

If you’re travelling with kids, treat them with a visit to Sealife Sunshine Coast, Queensland’s largest tropical oceanarium, with sea creatures galore, including touch tanks, live shows and the opportunity to swim with seals and dive with sharks. You’ll find it at The Wharf.

Passionfruit melting moments

3 passionfruit 250g butter, softened 1 t vanilla extract ½ C icing sugar 1 2/3 C gluten free plain flour, sifted ½ C cornflour, sifted 80g butter, softened 2/3 C icing sugar 1 T passionfruit juice

■ With lightly floured hands, roll two level teaspoons of mixture into balls and place on oven tray about 3cm apart. Dip a fork into a little extra flour, press biscuits lightly.

■ Bake for 15 minutes or until biscuits are a pale straw colour.

Leave the biscuits on the trays for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool.

■ To make the passionfruit but-

ter cream, beat the butter and sifted icing sugar in a small bowl with an electric mixer until pale and fluffy. Beat in the reserved passionfruit juice.

■ Sandwich two biscuits together with a teaspoon of the passionfruit butter cream. Dust with a little extra sifted icing sugar, if desired.

■ Remove pulp from passionfruit, place pulp into a sieve and press down with the back of a spoon.

Tiebreakers rule on court

Interclub tennis was back in action this weekend after the Junior Open, with games once again hotly contested on the courts of the Ashburton Trust Tennis Centre.

In the game between Hampstead and Allenton, it was a close affair in the doubles match-ups, with Hampstead’s Aidan Mitchell and Pete Kirwan having to go into a tiebreaker with Allenton’s Bryn Looji and Connor Brosnahan, after the two sets finished at 5-7 and 6-2.

Allenton eventually took out the tiebreaker 10-8.

Hampstead struck back in the other doubles match however, with Mary-Anne Thyne and Jade Brosnahan winning 6-3, 7-5.

In the singles, Hampstead took out three of the games, with Allenton’s Aaron Reid the only one able to offer any resistance, going right down to the wire to beat Mathieu Lucas 10-8 in a tiebreaker.

Southern and Tinwald played out the closest game of the day, with Southern taking out the game eight sets to seven.

Both the doubles and singles games were split, with Southern’s Jason Feutz and Oliver McKeown winning 6-4, 6-1, while Tinwald’s Josh Jones and John Leslie won 7-6, 6-2.

In what had the potential to be one of the closest fixtures of the day, Methven got the better of the Fairton side 4-2.

In the first doubles clash, Fairton’s Rhys Cromie and Tyler Leonard were no match for Sam Bubb and Koji Kawamata, who cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

Fairton pulled it back in the other doubles match however, with Philip Crozier and Erin Connelly-Whyte needing a 10-5 tiebreaker to finally get past the Jarrad Hill and Gareth Evans combination.

Cromie got his revenge in the singles, defeating Bubb 6-3, 6-1, while the power of Kawamata proved too much for the young Leonard, who lost that encounter 6-2, 6-1.

Best of both worlds Kiwis assistant coach Brian Smith wants his side to have their cake and eat it too, playing both precise and adventurous rugby league.

Smith’s troops cruised to a 38-8 win over Toa Samoa in Saturday’s Rugby League World Cup opener in Auckland, overpowering their opponents in the second half.

New Zealand made 17 errors – at least five too many in the circumstances, according to Smith – and completed just 62 per cent of sets. But he wasn’t willing to trade accuracy for flair. The Kiwis wouldn’t win the World Cup unless they could achieve both. - NZME

Ankle surgery for Beale Gerard Beale is set for a long layoff after he underwent surgery yesterday for a broken ankle sustained in New Zealand’s 38-8 Rugby League World Cup win over Samoa.

Beale initially collided with Samoa winger Peter Mata’utia but battled on for another few tackles before he succumbed to the injury and collapsed in back play. The 27-year-old was taken off the field in a medi-cab. The Australia-born utility back will miss the remainder of the Kiwis’ World Cup tilt, as well as a solid chunk of his maiden Warriors NRL campaign. - NZME

Taumalolo is Tongan Coach Kristian Woolf has appeared puzzled by questions about whether Jason Taumalolo has embraced the Tonga experience in camp ahead of the Rugby League World Cup. Injury mars big Fiji win Fiji have been dealt another significant blow to their forwards with prop Kane Evans likely ruled out for the rest of the Rugby League World Cup with a broken wrist.

The Bati completely outclassed the inexperienced USA on Saturday night in Townsville, running in 11 tries to one in their 58-12 win. But the victory was soured by the loss of Evans, who suffered the injury as he crossed for Fiji’s fifth try in just the 17th minute match. - NZME

Hammers claim Lochore Cup

Despite making the worst possible start imaginable in a game of rugby, the Mid Canterbury Hammers are the 2017 Lochore Cup champions, after defeating the West Coast 47-15.

Playing in perfect conditions at the Methven Domain due to the Ashburton A&P Show, a large crowd gathered in the makeshift arena for 80 minutes of actionpacked rugby.

Mid Canterbury fans would not have believed their eyes in the first five minutes however, with top try-scorer Maleli Sau earning an early shower after a good old-fashioned clotheslining of Logan Heath.

The referee James Munro went to the TMO to confirm the decision, but there was no evidence to see why it would not be a red card.

With a penalty already safely tucked under the Coasters’ belts, a penalty try followed soon after, with Hammers captain Jackson Donlan deemed to have intentionally knocked the ball on, leading to a yellow card for the hooker.

The Hammers found themselves 10 points down with only 13 men, but bounced back, with some quick ball recycling allowing the Hammers to put Tom Hanham-Carter in through the right corner.

Jarred Percival missed the conversion, but did not make the same mistake five minutes later, after a similar pattern of play saw Christian Vainerere able to hit a gap and dance through for the Hammers’ second try, much to the disbelief of large contingent of travelling West Coast supporters.

The Hammers then extended their lead further, with Percival knocking over a penalty from near the halfway line.

The points kept coming towards the end of the half, with Vainerere and Willie McGoon overloading the right wing, giving them the extra man to allow McGoon to cross for his first of the game.

The West Coast then put their first period of sustained pressure on the Hammers, but with plenty of drive from the Hammers engine room on defence, they were able to hold off for over five minutes until they finally cracked.

The Coast’s standout player, lock Isei Lewaqai eventually found a gap in the defence, and used his long stride to capitalise.

With a minute left, the Hammers took another long-range penalty to extend their lead to ten, before Percival finished off the half with a sublime drop goal to send them in to the sheds 2815 up.

The first 20 minutes of the second half were a much slower

affair than the rest of the game, with the Hammers parked in their 22, holding on for dear life under intense pressure, giving away several penalties in the process.

However, the West Coast were not able to capitalise, and once the Hammers pushed out with 20 minutes to go, that seemed to break the West Coast’s spirit.

McGoon could only be stopped after a rampaging run by a very high tackle which went unpunished.

While the Coast could not make the most of a solid 20 minutes in the opposition 22, the Hammers only needed two minutes to pick up their first points of the half, spreading the play as they always do, allowing Seta Koroitamana to cross for his first of the game.

The openside flanker soon crossed for another, with a brilliant set play from a lineout allowing him and McGoon to carve through the middle, allowing him to dot down near the post.

With mere minutes to go, and the game out of sight at 40-15, the Coast picked up a yellow card after Regan Stanton caught Koroitamana, starting a minor shoving match.

Davey Maw, off the back of two games of cricket on Saturday and making his first appearance for the Hammers this season, made a five minute cameo at the end of the game, much to the enjoy-

ment of the large home crowd.

The Hammers finished up with one more try to rub more salt in to the wounds of the Coasters, with Dan Fransen easily finding a gap wide out to run the diagonal in under the posts, giving the Hammers the 47-15 win.

“If you had spoken to me three minutes in to the game I would have given you a completely different story,” Hammers co-coach James Jowsey said.

“We drew from it and showed what character we had.

“The West Coast are a good side but we knew if we played our rugby, we would be able to beat them.”

It was a tough season for captain Jackson Donlan, losing two finals at club level, but he was finally able to get his hands on a piece of silverware yesterday.

“If I had lost another one I probably would’ve hung up the boots.

“The boys showed massive ticker today and I am really proud that we were still able to go down to 14 and still play our exciting rugby,” he said.

Canterbury have continued their incredible dominance of the national provincial championship with a clearcut victory in the Premiership final over Tasman on Saturday night.

Richie Mo’unga was the standout for the red and blacks, the No10 scoring a grand final-record 25 points and buoyed perhaps by his time with the All Blacks in Brisbane last week. Mo’unga scored Canterbury’s first two tries – both individual efforts with the second a sensational kick-return from halfway.

The try, converted by Mo’unga from in front of the posts, allowed Canterbury to take the lead for the first time in the match after an excellent start by the visitors.

It was a display of almost complete dominance from the firstfive, who tackled and kicked Tasman to death.

It was his run and offload which led directly to Canterbury’s final try late in the second half scored

by Jack Stratton.

Big Tasman centre Levi Aumua rocked the hosts with the converted try in the opening minutes and they looked in good shape after Mitch Hunt knocked over a penalty to put them 10 points up, but once Canterbury got into their rhythm – in particular their excellent set piece – and once Mo’unga got his hands on the ball, Tasman were up against it.

As they tend to do in these parts, Canterbury scored on the stroke of halftime through Tim Bateman and it was a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. It is Canterbury’s third successive final victory and their ninth in 10 years, a remarkable run of success.

The match-up between the Crusaders partners always promised to be close, with Tasman having real talent in their 8, 9, 10 axis through Jordan Taufua, Finlay Christie and Hunt.

But Canterbury’s own key axis of Luke Whitelock, Mitchell Drummond and Mo’unga had far the better of their opponents and the red and blacks have a fullback of talent in George Bridge.

Like Super Rugby champions the Crusaders, Canterbury are extremely hard to beat at AMI Stadium and their forward dominance was perfectly displayed halfway through the second half when they put together an extraordinary 34 phases before Bridges was held up over the line. A penalty advantage meant that man Mo’unga put the Cantabs further ahead anyway.

While it was a sad way for departing wing James Lowe to end his time with Tasman, he and his side deserve credit for what they brought to another gripping final.

“For me having a week off and not being able to be the with the boys – I was gutted,” Mo’unga said of missing last weekend’s semi-final. “To be back with the team I love – you could see how close we are on the field.” - NZME

Bordeaux in demand Bordeaux will be a warm favourite to repeat in today’s G3 $30,000 South Bay Trotters Cup at Kaikoura, but he will have to repel a significant challenge from locals hoping for a hometown success.

Paul Nairn has set his locallybred and owned up-and-coming pair of Ronald J and The Foot Tapper for the race and Ken Ford, who is from Kaikoura, will be hoping for an improved showing from Marcoola along with Zachary Binx.

Ford’s cousin Barry also has a leading hope in Doctor Bones engaged while Tornado Valley and Destiny Jones are also owned by ‘top of the south’ connections.

Bordeaux will be looking to step well and lead them all the way, but if he does get beaten, the winner is likely to have some sort of local flavour.

More importantly, the popular seaside fixture will mark another step towards the recovery of the Kaikoura township following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake which devastated and isolated the region just a few weeks after last

year’s race meeting.

Nobody knows how difficult the recovery has been more than Barry Ford, a committeeman on the Kaikoura club who has been busy lately preparing the track for the influx of people over the weekend from far and wide.

“The racecourse came through the earthquake relatively unscathed but our home and our track both suffered significant damage,” said Ford.

“There are gouges running right through the property and it took three months to get the track workable again.

“The house had to be relevelled

and fixed up and just now we’ve finally got the painters and plasterers in there. So we’re still fixing stuff up a year later and it’s been a long, slow process but we’re all getting there.”

Ford has also faced the extra challenge of trying to race a horse like Doctor Bones from Kaikoura since he resumed in February.

That meant taking the long inland route to Christchurch on numerous occasions and even when the main road reopened a few months ago, over the winter that was only on the weekends and the road would be closed by 6pm.

“When it did reopen there were

so many road works and so much traffic that it was actually taking longer than the inland route, so there’s been a lot of challenges during the year.”

Doctor Bones, an eight-yearold grey gelding, made a comeback to racing in June last year after being off the scene with an injury for 20 months and two years after he finished second beaten a neck by Sheemon at the Jewels in Cambridge.

Doctor Bones hit his straps in the autumn with a strong win over Wilma’s Mate and The Foot Tapper at Addington and was also very good there when resuming and winning a month ago.

Doctor Bones was not disgraced when racing parked from the 1400m and finishing fifth and three lengths behind Bordeaux in the Canterbury Park Trotting Cup a week later and Ford says he has remained in fine fettle since.

“It was a bugger when he drew the second line but if he gets away okay and gets a half decent run, I would expect him to be thereabouts.”

Reid absence worrying All Whites captain Winston Reid missed West Ham United’s latest Premier League clash yesterday – a worrying sign for the All Whites just two weeks out from the intercontinental World Cup playoff against Peru.

West Ham drew 2-2 with bottom of the table side Crystal Palace but the Kiwi centre back was completely absent from the squad.

There has been no official word from West Ham or manager Slaven Bilic about Reid’s absence but the 29-year-old defender is believed to have been out due to a calf strain.

Reid was expected to feature in the match by most major news outlets, which prompted Kiwi fans to question his omission from the team.

This adds to the nerves surrounding other All Whites Premier League star Chris Wood, who left the field 20 minutes into his Burnley side’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester City last Sunday with a hamstring injury.

Burnley manager Sean Dyche said Wood was “touch and go” to play in Tuesday’s clash against Newcastle.

“Woody has a chance, but he is touch and go for Monday,” Dyche told the Burnley Express.

“He’s responded well to treatment, and it’s not a deep-seated problem, but we have to make sure with him.”

A good sign for the All Whites is that both Reid and Wood aren’t taking any chances with their injuries, which will please All Whites coach Anthony Hudson.

The first leg of the World Cup qualifying playoff is on Saturday 11 November at Westpac Stadium in Wellington. - NZME

Sport Joshua retains titles Anthony Joshua has been taken to the 10th round before he stopped the durable Carlos Takam to retain his WBA and IBF heavyweight titles.

The referee moved in to stop the fight after Joshua, who likely won every round, caught Takam with a hook-uppercut combination and was moving in to land more blows. Takam shook his head in disgust and many in the Cardiff crowd, estimated to be about 75,000, jeered the stoppage.

The British boxer earned a 20th straight win that likely set him up for a unification fight in 2018 with either Joseph Parker or Deontay Wilder.

Double Olympic gold medallist Todd had two horses in contention for honours after the dressage phase at the Etoiles de Pau event. Price, 25th after the dressage, was one of 39 finishers from 62 starters to complete the cross-country, incurring 9.2 time penalties to move into ninth place.

Jones keeping AB folder Eddie Jones has compiled a Lions dossier based on the insight and feedback of his players involved on the tour of New Zealand and the England head coach claims it will “massively” improve his side’s chances of beating the All Blacks.

Jones asked the 15 England players in Warren Gatland’s squad, who secured the historic drawn test series against the world champions, to write a detailed review of the tour.

Jones described the information gathered as “outstanding” and said it would be critical to his side’s attempt to make up what he believed was a 20 per cent deficit between his side and the All Blacks in the countdown to the 2019 World Cup in Japan.

The 20-page dossier more than compensates for his players’ physical and mental hangover from the tour, that Jones says he must manage ahead of the three-test series next month

against Argentina, Australia and Samoa.

“I have got a folder this big,” said Jones, extending his arms.

“We got the players to write reviews of the Lions, from a learning point of view – what they learned about how to prepare for big tests, what they learned about the Kiwis.

“Some of it was outstanding.

“It was all about coaching, physical preparation, tactical preparation, the psyche of New

And it will become a dossier that is important for us going forward.”

Asked if the information would improve his chances of beating New Zealand, he said: “Massively. It [the Lions tour] is one of the greatest sporting events.

“Our players have been lucky enough to be part of a successful tour and they’ve learned a lot, grown a lot.”

Red card for toilet stop A 24-year-old New Zealand under 20s goalkeeper has been shown the red for urinating during an English football match. Salford keeper Max Crocombe was issued a red card for relieving himself at the home of Bradford Park Avenue in the National League North, the seventh tier of English football. A supporter is also believed to have reported Crocombe, a 24-year-old New Zealander, to police. “He was told by the steward twice not to do it and he went ahead and had a pee,” club secretary Colin Barker said.
