Body of missing man found The body of missing Methven man, George Agnew, was found yesterday on Lake Benmore, bringing to an end a search that lasted five days.

The 66-year-old had not been seen, nor heard from, since last Tuesday but was reported missing by family on Saturday morning.

Yesterday morning, around 9.30am, a body was found on the lake in the Mackenzie District and in a statement Agnew’s family confirmed that it was him.

“The search is over and just after 9am this morning (Wednesday) George’s body was found in Lake Benmore,” it said.

Police were last night still working through the formal identification process of the body, but the family’s statement confirmed it to be Agnew.

The circumstances around Agnew’s death remain a mystery and the matter has been referred to the coroner.

After being reported missing on Saturday, Agnew’s 25-foot yacht, Solar Heat was found abandoned on Lake Benmore on Saturday. Later in the day, his dog was discovered on the shoreline next to his car.

An extensive search was undertaken, initially by police and the local coastguard before further assistance arrived through Agnew’s family and friends as well as a large number of other volunteers.

On Monday night police announced that they would be scaling back the search but family, friends and volunteers would continue to try and locate Agnew.

As well as people combing the shoreline and surrounding areas of the lake, there were boats, waterskis, helicopters and jetboats in on the search.

Police extended their sympathies to Agnew’s family and also thanked everyone who was involved in the search process.

Agnew’s body was found near the Haldon Arm Reserve at the northern end of Lake Benmore.

It sure feels like Christmas Christmas has arrived in style in Ashburton with a six-metre tree taking centre stage in Baring Square east. The tree will be lit on Friday night.

New apprentices hard to find

The demand for apprenticeships is so strong in Ashburton it is outstripping the number of young people available to take up jobs.

Ashburton College runs a trades academy that takes 20 students a year.

All of this year’s students will have employment at the end of the school year and principal Ross Preece says he continues to field enquiries from employers offering fulltime apprenticeships.

‘They’re looking for students who are Level Two capable, have good literacy and numeracy skills, can read a manual and have a good work ethic.

With the trades academy students all having work for next year, I’m struggling to find the students for those jobs,” he said.

The academy sees students undertaking work experience across a range of trades as well as meeting core curriculum requirements.

Preece said he did have a group of students who were keen to take up apprenticeships but who had not achieved Level Two capability.

He believes the community needs about 60 students in the academy each year to meet workforce demand, but a shortage of qualified teachers in the trades area is hampering the academy’s growth.

“This academy is about getting kids ready for employment and it’s been a huge success,” he said.

The college advertised for a technology teacher on four occasions this year and was continuing to advertise.

Because of the demand from both students and employers, Preece said he was now considering employing an ex-tradesman and granting them a limited authority to teach to ensure the trades course could grow “I’m open to talking to people who could be interested and who’re suitable. They’d need to have the ability to build and maintain relationships with teenagers and they’d need to realise they’d be earning less than they would working as a tradie,” he said.

There was a national shortage of technology teachers and few, if any, were being trained, Preece said.

DOC defends gull poisoning

The Department of Conservation are defending a poisoning operation that locals have labelled “barbaric”, “stupid” and “like murder”.

In a short-term operation carried out between November and December, DOC has announced it will be hand laying toxic bread baits among southern blackbacked gull colonies on the upper Rakaia riverbed, in a bid to reduce colony size.

An initial press release from DOC sparked public outcry, with many locals taking to the Ashburton Guardian Facebook page to speak out against the operation and the necessity of killing the birds.

However, Geraldine DOC operations manager Dave Winterburn said the “low risk” operation is in fact an important step in helping other “much more threatened” native birds on which the southern blackbacked gulls prey.

“The black-backed gulls are

not protected and they are not threatened – and they are a known predator to river birds, eating their chicks and eggs.”

He said a number of endemic, endangered species like wrybills, black-fronted terns and banded dotterel would benefit from the reduced predation.

“The operation isn’t to eradicate these gulls, it’s just to reduce their population to a level where they aren’t a problem for these other birds.”

While locals had voiced concerns around the threat of poison entering the river and harming other species, Winterburn said hand laying the bread baits was also the most effective way to tackle the issue with an opportunity to “really target the colonies” and avoid further contamination.

“If you shoot one or two the rest of the birds are going to fly off, and if you use a helicopter you’re going to cause a whole lot of other problems throughout the riverbed.”

And although legislation re-

quires the warning signs to be posted for a month, Winterburn said the DOC operation will in fact take a maximum of two days, with staff on site to ensure no other species are put at risk, and no poison is carried into the water.

Forest and Bird chairperson Edith Smith also spoke in support of the operation to reduce the “vigorous species”.

“People get up in arms about chemicals … but if we want to look after these critically endangered birds we need to deal with these predators,” she said.

“Alphachoralose poison is like an anaesthetic. It causes birds to become hypothermic and cold to a level that they just fade out and it’s actually a very gentle way to die.”

She said she felt there was no risk to other river-dwelling species, as other birds don’t eat bread.

Unlike other species, she said, the black-backed gulls do not fly away to die and will be collected

by DOC staff in the morning.

“I have faith that [DOC] will do this well and that they will be very mindful,” she said.

The operation follows other similar southern black-backed gull programmes around the country.

Alphachloralose has been used to reduce black-backed populations near the upper Waimakariri River and Foveaux Strait in a bid to help other breeding colonies, and at Te Anau Airport in Fiordland, to reduce a colony proving hazardous to pilots.

In Rakaia, it will occur in conjunction with a new trapping programme also designed to help the threatened riverbirds.

Throughout the Rakaia valley, traps will be established to capture key predators like stoats, wild cats and weasels.

DOC were encouraging people with queries and concerns about the Rakaia operation to contact their Geraldine office.

They will be setting out warning signs around the area where the operation is taking place.

Mt Hutt Skifield to get a snowmaking upgrade for 2018

As it comes off one of its most successful seasons, NZSki.com is looking at investing more than $1 million in Mt Hutt skifield over the summer months.

Skier numbers were up on the back of a 27 per cent increase in the Australian market and the well established 10-and-underski-and stay-for-free programme continued to bring growing numbers of families to the slopes, ski area operations manager James Urquhart said.

Feedback from Methven businesses was that the season had been a strong one, he said.

“It’s been one of the better seasons we’ve had for a while, it was a great snow season and we were able to stay open a bit longer.”

The flip side of a good snow season was that the field had slightly more closed days than normal, Urquhart said.

Ski area manager James McKenzie is looking ahead to a summer where, in addition to normal maintenance work, there will be significant reinvestment by the parent company.

The majority of the $1 million plus that will be spent will be in snow making, with a rebuild of

pumping equipment that will ensure more of the mountain is able to open from day one.

“With the new equipment in

place we’ll be able to make snow over all trails at the same time.

People often make a decision to come up depending on the lifts

and this will mean we’ll have the opportunity to open all of our chair lifts from opening day,” he said.

Because snow making was temperature driven, when it was cold enough the opportunity had to be grabbed with both hands and the new equipment would ensure all trails would benefit,McKenzie said.

The company is also investing in a new, 45 seater, four,wheel -drive bus to use as a skier shuttle from the lower car parks.

Portable toilets will also be installed at the lower car parks.

“This is about moving people efficiently and quickly.”

NZ Ski.com will also be investing in improving accommodation in the base lodge to create an area for school groups and youngsters on ski programmes.

An extra 60 square metres will be provided.

Work will also be done on the summit six chair’s safety equipment to ensure it was out of action for a shorter time if it is needed to be de-iced after a heavy snowfall.

Massive tree means Christmas is here

For the first time in many years Ashburton will be presenting a festive face to the rest of the country in the lead up to Christmas.

Gone are the tired central East Street decorations that have made the town something of a festive joke and in their place will be new festive flags and decorations. But the heart of this year’s decorations will be a giant, six metre tall Christmas tree

in Baring Square east.

Yesterday the tree arrived in a very large Christmas box and during the day it grew to an impressive height before a Christmas star was hoisted onto the top branch.

Lights have been strung among the tree’s decorations and these will be lit on Friday night in the district’s inaugural Light the Night family Christmas party.

in the past, they will be added to each year, Ashburton District Council community relations manager Vincie Billante said.

A budget of about $50,000 has been set aside for progressively upgrading the town’s festive decorations.

As the tree was being assembled it had attracted plenty of interested from passersby, she said.

“This is quirky and it’s something new and different for Ashburton.”

Billante’s community relations team offered to become this year’s Christmas fairies, taking on the job of buying new decorations and planning Friday’s festivities.

These will include music, the screening of a children’s Christmas movie and a lighting the Christmas tree ceremony.

The event had been designed for all ages and she is encouraging families to come along with picnic rugs and food. There will also be several food caravans parked

around the square and Santa will make an appearance during the evening.

The Christmas tree has been strengthened to withstand whatever the weather gods may throw at it and it will be given its own security team during its residence in Baring Square and will be monitored 24/7.

Light up the Night starts at 6.30pm in Baring Square east with the tree’s lights to be turned on at 9pm by mayor Donna Favel.

Countdown on to health centre opening

It’s been a dream that’s been a long time in the making, but come December 11 at 8.30am, Ashburton’s Three Rivers Health will open its doors for business.

The comprehensive medical centre has been built on Ashburton’s Allens Road by doctors Penny Holdaway, John Guthrie and Malcolm Wootton and practice ownership and support association, Southlink Health.

The new practice brings together the Gym Company and Allenton Medical Centre, Searles Allenton Pharmacy, podiatrists Feet n’ Motion and Pro-Active physio.

With just days until it opens its doors, tradespeople are signing off, furniture is being delivered and, for the people who will staff the centre, there’s a growing sense of pride in what has been achieved, Holdaway said.

The centre will be workplace to seven or eight doctors as well as a team of nurses and support staff from the two existing practices.

More staff are likely to be recruited in the future.

It’s a new medical centre that comes with plenty of new ideas, Holdaway said.

“We will have a floating nurse and a doctor who is not booked who will see patients who need to

There are also rooms set aside where doctors can undertake minor surgical procedures, a plastic surgeon will hold weekly clinics and a healthcare assistant will also be part time.

This person will undertake basic patient data recording to ensure

that when a doctor is with the patient, their time is totally patient focused, she said.

There are 15 consulting rooms.

Centre stage at ground level is a large waiting and reception area with consultation and treatment rooms, while the upper level includes private work space for nurses and doctors, the telephone

reception area and social and teaching spaces.

The ownership team believes the new complex will be attractive to young doctors for both the facilities and opportunities it provides.

“We’ve thought about this project very hard and done a lot of patient journeys to ensure what we’ve built is as patient focused as

possible,” Holdaway said.

Number one consideration was to retain the family feeling of the two individual practices.

‘We want our patients to feel they are known, we don’t want them to become a number,” she said.

Three Rivers Health has been on the drawing board for eight or nine years but finding the right site was key.

“Then it was a matter of deciding what we wanted between our wish list and what was practical We’d decided above all else, this centre had to be friendly.”

While the health centre is designed as a one-stop-shop for its patients, the pharmacy and other health services will be available to people who are not registered as patients.

The relocation of two medical practices would not be easy Holdaway said but the process had been carefully planned.

“It’ll take a bit of time to shake down, but we’ll be as organised as possible.”

The Gym Company will close its doors on December 8 with Allenton providing cover. Allenton will make its move to the new premises over the weekend of December 9 and 10, with Three Rivers Health opening its doors on December 11.

In brief Progress on lakes’ plan A newly developed landscape management plan for lakes Camp and Clearwater is moving forward with the adoption of the Terms of Reference for a recently established working group. Ashburton District Council’s Lakes Camp and Clearwater Landscape Working Group will meet at least three times a year to set priorities for the plan.

Parking survey If you spot a stranger in a hi-vis vest checking out your vehicle when it’s parked in Ashburton, don’t be alarmed, they’re simply undertaking an inner town parking survey. From today the Ashburton District Council will have a survey team walking the streets of the CBD, recording the last three digits on number plates of parked vehicles. The information will become part of the council’s next parking strategy review.

Council contracts The Ashburton District Council awarded $4 million worth of contracts last month. Two of those were to Ashburton Contracting $568,195 for waste water pipeline renewals and $2.448 million for reseal and pre-seal repairs. A $992,794 contract was awarded to City Care Water for water pipeline renewals. A total of 15 tenders were received for the three projects.

Kids Curators’ pattern puzzle

Some of Ashburton’s sharpest and most creative minds have joined forces in an exhibition that challenges the concept of patterns.

The students are part of the MindPlus programme and for the past term have been working in the Ashburton Museum on a Kids Curators’ project. Various items have been chosen from the museum’s collection and used to demonstrate patterns.

Each week, working in groups, the students have visited the museum to plan and curate their exhibition, to write labels, choose objects, plan themes and to design activities other youngsters will enjoy.

Thirty-two children from 13 schools have been involved in the project. To join the MindPlus group a child must be assessed as cognitively talented or creatively gifted and tutor Mel Simons said the exhibition was the culmination of a year’s worth of work on patterns.

Museum manager Tanya Robinson said the students had undertaken an impressive critique of the museum’s collections and had challenged adults to look at many items in a new way.

Road crews ramp up repair work

The heavy rain that battered roads around the Ashburton District continues to be felt in a legacy of repair work.

To speed up the unexpected, and heavy additional workload, the Ashburton District Council has called in extra contract crews, with four now working on remediating damaged road surfaces.

Chairman of the council’s service delivery committee Stuart Wilson said the rain damage had meant the number of crews working on road maintenance had more than doubled to five or six.

Contractors from Fulton Hogan and Ashburton Contracting Limited (ACL) have worked closely with the council to repair the 100 kilometres of road that were damaged.

“The majority of repairs have been completed, although there are still some outstanding insurance claims which are delaying some projects,” Wilson said.

The New Zealand Transport Association (NZTA) has provided emergency funding to assist in

completing the work.

July’s storm caused flooding in many parts of the district, forcing roads to close, washing out

bridges and culverts, destroying some roads towards the coast, and severely damaging unsealed roads near the foothills.

More than four months later, many of these roads remain soft underneath, and could continue to cause problems if they

don’t dry out properly.

“These roads could rapidly deteriorate the next time there is a decent rain. What we’re hoping for now is a hot, dry summer to get rid of any underground moisture and lower the water table, although that’s the last thing farmers will want to hear,” Wilson said.

The Ashburton District has the third largest network of rural roads in the country, including more than 2600 kilometres of roadway.

A new roading campaign, called Roading Worx, is being launched by the Ashburton District Council in December. Its focus is on informing residents about what is involved in maintaining our roads and keeping them up-to-date with major roading projects around the district.

Missile launch condemned The launch of a North Korean missile towards Japan has prompted sharp criticism from NATO, EU and UN officials.

“This is a further breach of UN Security Council Resolutions, undermining regional and international security,” NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

The launch is “in outright violation of the DPRK’s international obligations, as set out in several UN Security Council resolutions,” a spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said in a statement.

Japan’s UN ambassador Koro Bessho told reporters in New York that his country has condemned North Korea publicly and said “we criticise their behaviour in the strongest possible terms.”

Matthew Rycroft, the British ambassador to the UN, said if confirmed as a missile launch this is a “reckless act by a regime which is more intent on building up its ballistic missile nuclear capability than it is on looking after its own people.”

Bali volcano closes airport for third day Bali’s Mount Agung volcano is spewing ash 7600 metres high and has closed the island’s international airport for a third day yesterday.

Authorities have told 100,000 people to leave an area extending 10 kilometres from Mount Agung as it belches grey and white ash plumes, the low clouds hanging over the volcano at times hued red from the lava welling in the crater.

Officials have extended the closure of Bali’s international airport for another 24 hours due to concerns the thick volcanic ash could harm aircraft.

Birds seem to have us in a flap Matt Markham

hat’s important to people these days? Birds, or at least so it would

appear.

On Monday night we placed a post on the Guardian Facebook page detailing an operation that will take place at the Rakaia River in the coming weeks, to try and control the population of the southern black-backed gulls.

The process will see poison placed on margarine-coated bits of bread which will ultimately kill the bird.

The southern black-backed gull is seen as a predator to some other river birds and to nests, eggs and chicks and as a danger to the continued protection of endangered species like wrybills, black-fronted terns, and banded dotterel, who would benefit from reduced predation.

The post on our Facebook page went, to borrow a young person’s phrase, gangbusters.

Close to 90,000 people have seen the post while it has been shared more than 500 times and the comments and likes reach into the hundreds also.

To put it into perspective, it sits reasonably close to the same levels of engagement as the post which ran earlier this year detailing the trials and tribulations of Daisy the Cow. Unfortunately, a lot of the comments were not positive and it would appear that there may have been some confusion about what was actually going to take place and over the difference between our cute and petite black-bill gulls from the banks of the Ashburton River to the more in-your-face and dominant southern black-backed gulls from on the Rakaia.

The Department of Conversation, who issued the initial press release which was shared on our Facebook page, were subjected to a lot of the criticism and were quick yesterday to defend their operation.

That some key activists for the safety of the birds within our district would also defend the decision to undertake an operation to reduce the colony sizes also gives credence to the fact that this is indeed the right thing to be doing.

It might not sound very nice, but it does appear as though it is for the greater good.

And every step is going to be taken to ensure that the operation has no impact on any other form of wildlife.

YOUR VIEW District roading Responding to Matt Markham’s opinion piece – ‘Are good roads too much to ask for?’ published in the Ashburton Guardian on November 27.

The Ashburton District Council (ADC) maintains the third largest rural roading network in the country, made up of more than 2600 kilometres of sealed and unsealed roads.

It’s a massive job maintaining and repairing that amount of roading, a job that, alongside our roading contractors, we take great pride in doing.

A total of nearly $15 million has been allocated for the 2017/18 financial year for work on the district’s roads. This has come from rates, as well as funding from the New Zealand Transport Association (NZTA).

In the past three years, ADC has spent between $750,000 and $1 million each year on unsubsidised work on Ashburton’s roads.

The damage caused to our roading network during July’s severe weather required remediation work beyond our normal workload and budget.

Helped by emergency funding, provided by NZTA, four additional roading crews for dig-out repairs were put together by the contractor to get through the extra workload.

This work is still being done.

The council also realises that there is some dissatisfaction with the standard of pothole

repairs and is working with its contractors to obtain a better result.

The recent It’s Our Place survey results are something that ADC takes very seriously. It’s this type of feedback that will help us develop the district’s long term plan.

Roading has always been a major focus for the council and will continue to be as our district’s population and economy grows into the future.

With such a large roading network, it’s difficult for residents to see all the work that is happening across the district.

This summer, ADC will launch its Roading Worx campaign through social media, traditional media and video, to showcase how much work is involved in keeping our district moving.

The campaign will highlight upcoming and completed roading projects, showcase some of the people behind all this work, and provide information to residents about roading issues that may affect them.

With such a large area to cover, it also means that ADC relies on residents to let us know if there are any issues in their area. The easiest and quickest way to do this is via the Snap, Send, Solve app, which can be downloaded via the App Store (Apple) or Play Store (android).

Smarter immigration policy will benefit our region H

ere in Mid Canterbury we rely significantly on immigration to fill the many available job vacancies, particularly in our agricultural industry.

Our community is richer for welcoming migrants to our region, not just in financial terms, but in the wonderful culture they bring and share with us all.

Mid Canterbury has changed so much in 20 years, we are truly becoming a multicultural place and I believe we have all benefited as a community from this.

So it’s sad that there’s been misrepresentation of Labour’s immigration policy from those who should know better – or at least who should’ve read our policy.

It’s simply not true that our regional economy will take a hit because of a cut to immigration numbers.

In fact, Labour’s immigration policy is designed to be a boost to Mid Canterbury because we will focus on matching migrant skills to where they’re needed most around New Zealand.

Under the previous government we saw record numbers of immigrants come into the

As a local, I sought i-SITE assistance as my one-stop-shop when organising a six-day conference catering for 300-plus attendees (visitors) and their families.

Websites did not provide every detail, simply, when trying to source additional accommodation, restaurants, shuttle options for guest speakers and delegates from Christchurch airport, activities for non-attending visitors etc.

The i-SITE team, at the time, with their experience, knowledge and suggestions covering all these aspects, filled the gaps in my local knowledge.

The town was full and I cannot express enough how valuable their assistance with local insight was at that time.

country and into cities where the infrastructure simply couldn’t cope with the influx.

We have seen migrant workers exploited and significant numbers of international students being offered low-quality courses and misled with the false promises of future residency.

The Labour-led Government believes it is time to have smarter migration settings.

A one-size-fits-all approach to skills shortages does not work.

For example, our skills shortages are hugely different from Auckland’s, so it makes perfect sense to create regional skills shortage lists.

We can tailor these lists to suit our needs to ensure that our job vacancies are able to be filled and thus ensuring our local economy continues to thrive.

The Government will work

with councils, unions, chambers of commerce, economic development agencies and businesses to determine where the shortages exist.

We will encourage and incentivise our young people to train and develop the skills we know we need locally, so our policy of free post-secondary school education will certainly help with this.

So I’m personally very interested to hear from our local businesses and agencies about where they feel help is needed and advocate on your behalf in government.

Let’s collaborate and get on

with doing good business here in Mid Canterbury.

My daughter, who works in the tourism/hospitality business elsewhere in New Zealand, suggests it is ridiculous not to have

an i-SITE in Ashburton, noting we are one hour from Christchurch airport with an opportunity for travellers to seek information and with shops nearby – a total travelling support package.

Tourism numbers are predicted to increase in the future, does Ashburton want to be on the map or in the Lonely Planet Guide as a destination of choice or not?

My view – YES, we need to be on the map.

To the mayor and councillors – as a ratepayer I move the following motion: “The Ashburton District Council funds the reopening of the Ashburton i-SITE, as an infrastructure requirement to support local residents (community) and visitors (New Zealanders and overseas).”

Workshop focuses on deer feed

About 40 farmers from Canterbury and the West Coast attended a deer industry regional workshop at Northbank Station near Rakaia on Tuesday afternoon.

Supported by members of the deer industry’s P2P Canterbury Advance Party, the focus of the workshop was feeding for production.

Guest farmer Matt Canton, from Landcorp’s Mararoa Station near Te Anau, began proceedings by discussing how he approached feeding hinds, fawns and weaners.

Canton said the core goal of the deer unit at Mararoa (the property also carries sheep and angus cattle), was putting as many animals on the ground as possible and finishing them on the station.

He said the key to carrying three different classes of stock was getting the timing right and, early on, a focus on sheep and lack of understanding of deer led to a high death rate among hinds.

However, a change to looking at the whole farm system and how everything fitted together led to a big turnaround in Mararoa’s deer unit, with it now sending away about 80 per cent of animals for

the chilled 60-day September/ October season, up from 30 per cent only three years ago.

Northbank Station manager Adam Waite took those on the workshop on a tour of the 669hectare property, which is undergoing development.

The home block is still fully hedged, operates under a border

dyke system and contains older pasture types, while the area of the farm that has been developed has seen the removal of internal fences, tracks, treelanes and headraces to allow 311ha of irrigation under seven pivots.

Alternative” proteins are on the verge of becoming mainstream, according to a new report, produced by respected global bankers Rabobank.

Apparently, those alternatives are getting closer to being “centre of plate”, or in layman’s language, what a growing majority of people want.

The question is, should New Zealand livestock farmers be worried?

Well, worried might be too strong a word at this stage.

But to ignore the likely impact of changes in consumer preferences, whether they be driven by the environmental impact of traditional farming systems, or the fact that, just as with everything else today, scientific and technological advances are making science fiction a reality, would be foolhardy at least.

You may scoff and think it won’t happen.

That’s probably what many in the wool industry did when synthetic carpets first came on the scene. After all, why would you not want a wool carpet? Proven product, does the job, tried and tested.

Well, that worked out well didn’t it?

No, the synthetic manufacturers said thanks very much for your ignorance and arrogance, stole a march and have been laughing all the way to the bank since.

So, while we may look at the idea of plant-based meat substitutes, emerging algae-based products or lab-grown meat as something a bit weird and surely just a fad, you’d be a mug if you thought the rest of the world wasn’t taking them very

seriously.

Sure, there will always be a demand for our agricultural products, and I suppose, I’m talking red meat more than anything else, although other sectors should pay heed.

But the world is changing, and changing quickly. We can’t just keep on doing what we’ve always done and expect to keep selling what we always have.

We need to be aware of the competition, the differences it will bring, and how it is focused on changes in the market.

We need to highlight our point of difference. And we need to bang it home.

Not just mumble under our breath about the quality what we produce and how we do it.

Now, more than ever, we need to highlight what we do well, and sing our story from the rooftops.

It’s natural. Pasture-fed, the way it should be.

Let the world know, or suffer down the line.

SFF appoints new boss Silver Fern Farms’ board of directors has appointed Simon Limmer as its new chief executive.

Silver Fern Farms co-chair Rob Hewett said Limmer has an excellent set of skills and experience to continue the strong progress Silver Fern Farms has been making as a leading red meat food company.

“The board is excited by the leadership Simon will bring to Silver Fern Farms. Simon comes with deep commercial experience in the food, manufacturing and service sectors both here in New Zealand and in several of the key international markets in which we operate,” Hewett said.

Limmer has significant general management experience developing effective supply chains, in stakeholder relations and in business development. He has spent the past nine years working for Zespri in a variety of general management roles in New Zealand and in China. Prior to that, he spent 14 years with French multinational Veolia, in Europe, East Asia, Oceania and the Americas.

Alliance invests in blood processing Alliance Group is investing almost $800,000 in a new blood processing room at its Mataura plant in Southland to help meet the growing demand from the pharmaceutical industry.

The new facility at the plant will collect and process adult bovine blood into serum for blood products, which are used in the development of vaccines, cancer treatments and drugs to treat neurodegenerative, haematological and endocrine disorders.

Home loan easing ‘not enough’ Easing the lending restrictions on banks will only make a minimal difference to first home buyers, a real estate industry body says.

The Reserve Bank yesterday said it will ease the lending restrictions on bank lending to home buyers and property investors from January.

The change will increase the cap on banks from 10 per cent to 15 per cent for new mortgage lending to owner occupiers.

Currently no more than 10 per cent of loans can go to owner occupiers with a deposit of less than 20 per cent.

It will also ease the restrictions for investors.

At the moment only 5 per cent of lending is to investors who have a deposit of less than 40 per cent.

That will alter slightly to allow those with deposits of less than 35 per cent for no more than 5 per cent of investor lending.

Canstar general manager Jose George said the change was good news for first home buyers.

“But, with median house prices still climbing in most regions and

uncertainty around mortgage rates, we don’t think today’s announcement will led to a surge in activity in this area of the market.”

Bindi Norwell, chief executive of the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ), said it was surprised and concerned that the loan to value ratio remained the same for first home buyers with most still needing to have a 20 per cent deposit.

“For some months now, the institute has been calling for a review for first time buyers to make it easier for them to get a foot on the property ladder.

“We constantly receive feedback from our members around the country that for many young couples, saving a 20 per cent deposit is just too much for them – especially when they’re already paying rent.

“With a median house price of $530,000 in New Zealand, this means a deposit of $106,000 is needed. In Auckland, with a median house price of $850,000, this is a deposit of $170,000.

Penno signals it is time to go Synlait chief executive John Penno will step down from his position within the next 12 months, as part of what’s been described by the company as an orderly transition to position it for the next phase of growth.

Penno has been chief executive and managing director of Synlait Milk for 12 years, and was a founder of Synlait five years before that.

“After 17 years of living and breathing this company, it is time to move on,” he said, although he will remain on the board of directors.

“There will be very clear processes to ensure the incoming CEO has the freedom and scope to make his or her mark on Synlait’s future, and I’m looking forward to taking a supporting role.

“Once the new CEO is in place, I am looking forward to getting back to my entrepreneurial roots and will be looking for opportuni-

Bitcoin hits $US10,000 mark for first time A single Bitcoin has hit $US10,000 ($14,496) in value for the first time in the cryptocurrency’s history.

The digital money was trading at $US10,009 ($14,510) per coin on the CEX IO exchange yesterday, before dropping back down below this watershed mark.

Over this past year, Bitcoin has seen its worth increase by 1000 per cent and it is continuing to attract investment, according to the Daily Mail.

One former hedge fund manager believes it could “easily” reach $US40,000 ($57,996) by the end of 2018.

But the dramatic rise has spared fears of a dangerous bubble which could end in huge losses.

Bitcoin has seen a surge of activity in recent weeks, rising in value exponentially.

For comparison, in July 2010, one Bitcoin was worth only $US0.08 (12 cents).

Yet the number of transactions involving the currency have not grown at a similar pace.

This suggests that it is mainly being used as an investment, rather than paying for online shopping or other goods and services.

Former Fortress hedge fund

manager Michael Novogratz believes Bitcoin’s value could multiply more than four times over the course of the next year.

Speaking to CNBC, he said: “Bitcoin could be at $US40,000 ($57,996) at the end of 2018. It easily could.

“There’s a big wave of money coming, not just here but all around the world.”

Bitcoin has seen an eye-watering ten-fold increase in its value since the start of the year and financial experts have warned over the expanding bubble.

6-8 spring onion 2T olive oil 375g button mushrooms, halved 4 rindless bacon slices, coarsely chopped 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1C dry red wine 1/4 C tomato paste 1/2 C water 1/2 C caster sugar 1.2kg gravy beef, chopped into 3cm cubes 2 medium fennel bulbs, thickly sliced 6 medium potatoes, halved 1/2 C chopped Italian parsley Salt and pepper

■ Add in wine, tomato paste, water and sugar. Bring to a boil then cook uncovered for 2 minutes. Set aside.

■ Place beef, fennel and the onion mixture in a slow cooker. Cook, covered, on low for 8 hours.

■ When just about ready to serve, bring a pot of water to the boil on high heat, add potatoes.

Cook until semi-soft and drain.

■ Serve casserole with potatoes on the side and sprinkle with parsley. Season with salt and pepper.

■ Tip: You could also use chuck steak or any stewing steak instead of gravy beef.

This week 2 of our women players are taking part in the National Senior doubles in Tauranga, and we wish them all the best.

Allenton Bowling Club Exciting news for club members - with the playing carpet and underlay having been lifted up from the No 1 green the Contractors were on site on Monday November 27 to prepare the new surface. This means that the car park is not available now for vehicles and entry to the clubhouse is marked by flags for pedestrians. If the weather is favourable it is anticipated the whole project should be completed by Christmas. Please note there is still some green matting available for sale which is ideal for garage floors – contact 3072954.

Since the last report there have been 2 more rounds of interclub with mixed results. Our ladies 5’s had 2 wins against Halswell and a win and loss against Kaiapoi.

The Rowntree girls had a loss to Halswell but a win against Darfield. The 2/4 ladies pennants team beat Papanui but unfortunately lost to club Canterbury 2017 and as we have the bye this Saturday our final placing will hinge on other teams results.

Our Under 8’s had a win and a loss but are sitting in 1st equal place in their section with 1 game to play.

The men’s 3/4 pennants beat Morrison Av. 41-40 but lost to Sumner by 3 points.

Congratulations to the Allenton players who were selected to play for Mid-Canterbury in the annual subcentre men’s Quadrangular 4’s senior and junior competition against Ellesmere, Malvern and Hurunui in North Canterbury last weekend.

Ashburton Bowling Club We have a new Ladies Singles champion, the final played November 28 saw Wendy Suttie play good draw bowls to defeat the current champion Heather Goodall in a close game watched by a good supporting crowd.

Congratulations to you both. On Monday the previously delayed Hefford Shield was played at Rakaia and with 3 wins and no losses the Ashburton teams were confirmed as winners. Congrats to all the players taking part. In the 7’s competition Ashburton was 3rd.

Team of Diane Gutberlet, Diana King, Gaynor Crack and Alison Gibbs took 3rd placing in the Charene Ladies 4’s at Allenton. Well done Girls. The club Ladies championship Triples will be played commencing Tuesday December 5 at 9.30am.

The club Xmas dinner will be held December 6 organized by Russell and Olive, Cost $12, names on main board please. A good menu consisting of ham, 2 other meats, salads, spuds and peas, and fruit salad and icecream. Can’t complain if something not to like there.

Roll up and enjoy. The men are getting through their matches but there needs some to make an effort to play them, so others are not held up. Last year, some games were not completed by presentation night so we don’t want that again. The Match committee would appreciate an effort. Thank you. Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club Sixty members and partners joined together at the MSA Restaurant for the November Tea Meeting. A moment’s silence was observed in remembrance of Privileged Member Lion Ken Smith. A good number of members had formed a Guard of Honour at his funeral held earlier in the day.

The evening commenced with Junior and Senior members of the Borough School Choir performing a selection of songs with Jo Castelow as their conductor.

The well trained children sang with great enthusiasm to a receptive audience who appreciated their performance. Borough School has a long tradition of well-trained choirs with many of the children moving on into the musical and entertainment world.

Ist VP Lion Ron explained the changes to the Ashburton Racing Club’s Christmas meeting which is now being held on Christmas Eve. Helpers will be required from 2.30 to 4pm.

President Joe reported on the visit of the Temuka Pakeke Lions Club which had been well 2nd , 1 3rd, Pat 1 1st, 1 3rd John 2 2nd, 1 3rd, Vivian 2 2nd, 1 3rd, Alison 2 1st, 2 2nd, Jo 2 2nd, Jackie 1 1st, Paul 2 3rd .

Premier bloom was Elina displayed by Joyce in the open bloom class.

The highlight of the evening was the wonderful shared sit down meal. All members contributed a food item, so capably organized by our Secretary Alison Donald. Alison supplied all the crockery, glasses and eating utensils. She made an amazing steamed desert & Christmas cake. The Tinwald Hall supper room was set up with Sheena Clark helping her. Thanks to Jackie Ryan for cooking the Ham. Great to have some of our new members come along too.

We now have a quiet time for members to prepare for their personal festive time and holidays.

Sunday January 7 will be our next Dahlia activity at 16 Baker St, garden open to the public 4-5pm then a finger food tea from 5pm for members, friend & families. Christmas greetings everyone.

Ashburton Golf Club The beautiful conditions at the course last weekend, brought out lots of great scores. Top of the pile was Peter walker who shot a superb 71 for a nett 64 to scoop the Radius Care player of the day and the Santa Marie Trophy, closely followed by Jordy Bird on 65. As at writing, I am still waiting for the final standings in the RMF Cup, but my elementary level maths has young Master Bird picking up a club sub for next year after coming home with a wet sail from 4th to 1st and leaving Tom Blacklow, Chris Lovelock and Arkright in his wake. Official results will follow soon. Again a great big thanks to Russell Moon and Fail for sponsoring this tournament, which I believe saw over 120 players take part throughout the season.

This week our attention moves to the Property ladder, with our summer stableford program and 1st qualifying round of the Property Brokers Shootout.

For new club members or the plain forgetful. We have 5 qualifying rounds this season starting this week December 2 then the 16, 23 and 30 and then January 6. You need to play a minimum of 2 rounds but more the merrier. Your best 2 rounds count, normally 77 or 78 points will get you into the top 19. Then on Sunday January 14 this 19 play in the Shootout Final to try and win a club sub thanks to Hamish and the crew at Property Brokers. The cost of entry is $10, payable before your first qualifying round. You can’t go and shoot 40 points then decide to be in it. Our poor struggling lady golfers get a helping hand with an extra 2 shots on their

organised. Members were reminded to consider attending the 2018 Geraldine Convention.

Sales of the Christmas raffle are going well with several more street days still to be held.

Helpers were requested for the Borough School Fete which begins at the conclusion of the Annual Christmas Street Parade held in the town on December 2. Members wishing to help could just turn up in their hi-vis jackets after 11am.

A full programme has been organised for the Special Needs Children from the Ashburton College. This annual outing, held in the Tinwald Domain this year, is seen by the students as one of their highlights in the year. The barbecue lunch is popular as is the treasure hunt for bananas hanging in trees and a cricket game, but probably the most anticipated is the ride in the trailer behind a quad bike capably driven

by Lion Meredith. The only complaint is that he doesn’t go fast enough!

The evening came to a close with Bob Roger’s Tail Twisting and the singing of the National Anthem. handicap. so come on down and join in the fun and get your name on a great trophy following in the footsteps of Brandon legends like Robbie Bell, Hilary Lovett and Barry Day. Speaking of trophies, Presentation night is December 9, tickets on sale now $30 including meal and entertainment. Get em while they’re hot! Great food brilliant singer and a sub par M/C, all we need now is great company.

Ashburton Horticultural Society President Trevor Gamblin welcomed 15 members to our November meeting. We enjoyed a Pot Luck Tea and then were entertained my Irene & Cushla on their piano accordions playing Christmas songs with a good sing along and they played a couple of their favourite tunes.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club Three teams took part in the South Island doubles where Richard Browe and Brian Westerbeek from Christchurch were runners up.

We had 4 players take part in the National Doubles at Kapiti in November 4/5th and then took part in the NZ Trials the next day.

The South Island Senior Doubles were held here in Ashburton on Nov 18/19 and Karen Stephen and Mavis Thomson from Timaru won the championship Plate winners were our Jan Guilford and Karen Bensdorp Runners up in the Bowl were Mick Little and Ellen Pithie from Ashburton The Tri-Star tournament was also held here the following week with a team of 6 from each Wellington and Southern Region and 2 teams from Canterbury. In the last month we had entries in the AMP show and there was a trip to Oamaru for the South Island Area Day that was full of visits to many interesting venues both at the Area day and lots of stop offs at interesting places on the way home.

The theme for 2018 will be upcycling fibre in many forms. We will be moving our meetings and events In January to the Plains Museum in Tinwald. For those interested we will be having meetings on the second Monday of the month in the evening 6.30 until 8.30pm for just getting together and free spinning lessons for those wanting to learn.

The first lesson will start in March, we will provide equipment. Don’t forget the Christmas ‘bring a plate’ get together and to collect your bag embellishment project.

Plains Ladies Friendship Club Our final Friendship Club meeting for the year was held November 27 at the Lake House at Lake Hood.

We all gathered at 10am and were welcomed by Vera our President. The Speaker for the day was Gilbert Murdock who is the project manager for The Lake Hood Extension Project, which is a charitable trust looking after the new development. He has two permanent staff and two part-timers who help him. They are responsible for the mowing, planting, irrigation and water testing of the water way. There are about 100 acres to mow and keep tidy.

When the lake was first established it did not have an outlet to the Ashburton River but now there is consent to take water from the river at various times and amounts to keep the water circulating to keep it clean.

Fish mainly ‘Carp’ were imported from the North Island to control the weeds. They cost $35 a fish.

There are now about 3500 carp in the lake. They swim in schools of 15 to 20 but do not breed here.

Very few dead fish are found in the lake. When it is noisy with boats etc they seem to go to the bottom of the Lake. Other fish such as land-locked salmon and rainbow trout and perch also inhabit the lake.

NIWA check the lake every two year with two divers to check on weed control.

The lake is a mix of ground water and river water.

Ground water contains glacial flours which give it a bluish colouring like Lake Tekapo. The new lake being developed is five acres and will have sites for about 350 new houses. It is dug out from a shingle pit. Ninety-five per cent of Mid Canterbury shingle comes from this pit and also sand for Fulton Hogan. It cost about $100,000 a year for upkeep.

Now Lake Hood is catering for many recreational activities including rowing, boating, canoeing, biking and walking and there is no other facility in New Zealand where people can come in, use it for nothing and go away having had a great day. It is amazing just how many people are driving and walking around the lake each day.

Now that the trees are becoming established it’s a great place for a family picnic and outings. Gates are locked at 10pm each night. Gilbert was thanked for his informative talk with a fruit tray and then we enjoyed a lovely Christmassy morning tea and a chat.

After the raffles were drawn Vera wished everyone Christmas greetings and safe travels until we meet again in January2018.

In brief Busy year for All Blacks The All Blacks are set to challenge all of the world’s best teams in 2018. Irish media have reported that the All Blacks will take on Ireland in Dublin next November, continuing a rivalry which has produced several tight games under Joe Schmidt’s reign in charge. A last-gasp 24-22 All Blacks victory in 2013 was followed by a 40-29 defeat in Chicago and 21-9 victory in Dublin last year, with the Chicago triumph being Ireland’s first win over the All Blacks. Ireland coach Joe Schmidt pinpointed the All Blacks as one of the teams on their November schedule. “I think we’ve got Argentina and New Zealand,” Schmidt said in a press conference.

The clash means that the All Blacks will play all of the current top five in the world rankings - with England (2) and Ireland (3) both on the end-of-year schedule, and the regular Rugby Championship games against Australia (4) and South Africa (5).

Bringing home trophies

Mid Canterbury’s best male bowlers have returned from a busy weekend of bowls at the country sub-centre quadrangular with plenty of trophies in the bag.

Four senior fours and two junior fours faced off against Malvern, Hurunui and Ellesmere, with the senior men winning all three match-ups, while the junior men could only manage two, which was still enough to give them the overall victory.

Mid Canterbury started things off with a close victory against Malvern, with both teams picking up two results each, leaving the green and golds to win on points difference.

They were then able to account

for Hurunui six games to two.

All that then stood between Mid Canterbury and a perfect record was Ellesmere, who they were able to sweep 8-0.

The win against each team secured them the Ashford Cup, the Oliver Duff Shield and the two shields on a bar.

The junior men also had a successful day on the greens, only losing their match against Malvern on their way to winning the Aaron Macdonald Memorial Trophy for the first time in a number of years.

Close games were played throughout, taking out the victory against Ellesmere by one point, before losing to Malvern by eight points.

They then bounced back with a clean sweep of Hurunui to secure

the victory. Along with the Aaron Macdonald Memorial Trophy, they brought home the Selectors Trophy and the Anderson Keith Trophy.

More Mid Canterbury rep bowlers will be back in action this weekend when the Canterbury Country team travel to play in the Southern Quadrangular tournament against Canterbury, South Canterbury and North Otago.

The senior women’s team is made up of all but two Mid Canterbury players, while the senior men’s foursome is all Mid Canterbury based.

Huge scrum One of the most powerful scrums in rugby history or the weakest goal posts you’ve ever seen? By the look of it, English club team Hinckley could take on the All Blacks forward pack after video emerged of their scrum collapsing a set of goalposts. Hinckley dominated Luctonians at one particular set-piece time during their National League Two North fixture, driving their opponents back from their own five-metre line and into the posts which fell down in a heap. The video was posted on the Hinckley Rugby Football Club Facebook page. According to reports, Hinckley went onto win the game 52-12. No word on the posts however.

CLUB NEWS – CONTINUED RSA Women’s Section In the President’s absence, Secretary Catherine Smith welcomed members on Thursday November 23. Apologies were received. With Hope McIntosh playing the piano the RSA song was sung. No birthdays this month. Sympathy was given to anyone who has sadly lost a loved one. Sick members were wished a speedy recovery. Patrice Ansell was introduced. She had a lovely photo presentation of the holiday she and her husband had in Israel. Due to the hot climate a vast range of vegetables is grown. They rode camels. So many of the places they visited we have heard of.

The afternoon’s Speaker was Rae Butler who displayed a small display panel of bees and spoke about breeding Queen Bees and also Food for Bees. In Mid Canterbury bees are mostly contracted as pollinators, but this does not provide much nectar, either for honey or for bee food.

In the peak of the season one hive will contain about 50000 bees, and the

Queen lays about 1500 eggs daily. Fascinating to learn that Rae artificially inseminates her Queen Bees under anesthetic! Royal Jelly is fed to the bigger cells by the workers to produce future queens.

Rae breeds to maintain good traits and also resistance to varroa mite, which attacks the brood, making hatching bees weak and leaving them open to infection.

The mite is becoming resistant to chemicals.

Iconic Cambridge Stud sold Cambridge Stud, New Zealand’s most iconic stud, is about to change hands and, very importantly for the New Zealand thoroughbred industry, it will remain proudly Kiwi-owned.

Sir Patrick Hogan yesterday confirmed that his and Justine, Lady Hogan’s historic thoroughbred nursery has been sold to Auckland couple Brendan and Jo Lindsay, ensuring that New Zealand’s internationally renowned stud farm stays in local hands.

“It is no secret that there has been huge international interest in Cambridge Stud for some time now,” Sir Patrick Hogan said.

“Many different parties have made approaches to us, however Justine and I were determined to wait for both the right time and the right people – that was nonnegotiable for us.

“That right time has now come and the right people have arrived.

A new chapter begins for Cambridge Stud and is one that we firmly believe was worth waiting for.

“Cambridge Stud has been our lives for over four decades. We

have nurtured it, been its guardians and have proudly seen it evolve into the globally respected operation it is today.

“As we pass the ownership baton on, we know that Cambridge Stud could not be in better hands.

Everyone knows that Brendan and Jo Lindsay are deeply passionate about both our industry and our country, and Cambridge Stud certainly holds a unique place in both.

“For Justine and I, this is a dream come true – we can look ahead with great confidence to the future that Cambridge Stud is assured through its new ownership.”

Despite the sale of the famed thoroughbred nursery, Hogan has no desire to step away from the industry that has been his life-long passion.

“In answer to the undoubted question of my retirement – the answer is a firm no, that is not on my agenda,” Hogan said.

“We will have our 2018 Karaka draft, the final one under our auspices, to prepare. After that I have plenty of racing and breeding interests to keep me firmly involved

in the industry – an industry I will be fully immersed in until the day I die.”

Nearly 12 months ago, Brendan Lindsay sold Sistema, the plastic container maker firm he started and majority owned, for $660 million to US Fortune 500 company Newell Brands.

For the Auckland-based couple, it is a case of diving further into thoroughbreds, an industry for which they have long had significant interests in.

Brendan and Jo Lindsay will assume control of Cambridge Stud in April 2018.

“We are very aware of the huge responsibility that comes with assuming the ownership of such a treasured and revered operation as Cambridge Stud,” Brendan Lindsay said.

“There are no parallels to what Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan have achieved including 31 years as the national sale’s leading vendor.

Sport Mayweather training Boxing star Floyd Mayweather may perform yet another retirement U-turn after posting a video of himself training in the gym like a maniac.

Mayweather claimed he would hang up his gloves after his money-spinning win over UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, insisting his 50th victory would be his final fight.

However, reports have suggested he has been keeping in top shape at his Las Vegas gym with the hunger to fight for the 51st time. Should he return, it remains to be seen who he would fight with previous opponent McGregor eyeing a showdown with Mayweather’s old foe Manny Pacquiao.

Southee ruled out Black Caps fast bowler Tim Southee has been ruled out of the first test against the West Indies due to the pending birth of his first child. The Black Caps open their summer schedule with the first test at the Basin Reserve on Friday. Lockie Ferguson joined the squad earlier this week and will battle with Matt Henry for the third pace bowling spot behind Trent Boult and Neil Wagner.

Methven’s Braden Currie is once again back on the podium after picking up a third-place finish at the IRONMAN 70.3 Asia-Pacific Championship.

The competition boasted a strong field, and it was a battle at the top – right to the final few metres of the western Sydney course.

Currie finished third, only two seconds behind two-time champion Tim Reed.

The Red Bull athlete completed the 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and 2.1km run in a time of three hours, 43 minutes and 33 seconds.

“I was really happy with my result today. It’s good to be back

on the podium, amongst this super classy field. We pushed each other to set some fast times over this flat, quick course and I was stoked to record my personal best 70.3 time,” Currie said on his blog.

It was not a quiet build-up to the event for Currie, who competed in the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, before racing two weeks later competing in the XTERRA World Championships in Maui, Hawaii.

Currie did not get off to as good a start as he would have liked, missing the front group of swimmers, meaning he only exited the water in eighth place, one minute and 35secs down on the leader, Australia’s highest-

ranked ITU triathlete Aaron Royle.

“Heading into the bike I took the first lap relatively easy. Then I started pushing it hard with Tim Reed and Joe Gambles on the second lap and we managed to pull back the lead group who were about 1.5 mins ahead,” Currie said.

He charged into transition in a personal best bike time of 2:03:57 with his last split pace recorded as a blistering 43.9km/h.

“From there it was going to be a pretty hot, tough run against those guys. There was a big bunch of some of the fastest runners on the planet and we were all running hard. I did my usual tack and decided I wasn’t

there to make up numbers and so I put it all out on the line. I pushed myself to the limit on the first lap of the run and managed to make a bit of a gap and get away from some of the others. Then Dan Wilson came flying through at about the 5km mark and I couldn’t stay with him. He was pushing it way harder than I could maintain and from there it was just a case of seeing if I could hold onto second,” Currie said.

In the final kilometre Reed came alongside Currie, setting up a sprint finish between the pair, with Reed pipping Currie to the post.

Currie will now move on to the IRONMAN Taupo 70.3 in two weeks’ time.
