Parking charges set to be halved

Shoppers in Ashburton’s central business district will find parking cheaper from July 1, though it won’t be free.

The Ashburton District Council has cut parking on the main street to 50 cents an hour, half the current fee; it follows a plea by retailers for an hour’s free parking, or free parking altogether.

Retailers said shoppers’ frustration with the pay and display machines and fines for over-parking were driving people away from the CBD to big box retailers with free parking.

They said unless the parking system

was changed, more vacant shops would appear on the main street.

Councillor Alan Totty proposed the 50c/hour charge at council’s meeting last week, saying it was a compromise.

He said he wanted to see a more vibrant shopping area in the CBD. “I have serious concerns about how it is going. I don’t want it full of real estate offices and empty shops.”

He said council had allowed big box retailers with free parking and it now needed to balance that with cheaper parking options in the CBD. “I don’t support (free parking) but we can meet them half-way. The result will

be a small reduction of fees collected but no real effect on income from infringement and fines, which make up most of the income from parking.”

Pay and display parking will be progressively installed on other streets in the CBD and council staff said the troublesome meters on East Street had been fixed.

Mayor Angus McKay was keen to get rid of the East Street models but roading manager Brian Fauth said better maintenance had made them more userfriendly and they had been performing recently without many problems.

Second offer to buy lot Person

Protest group Bung the Bore is distancing itself from a second offer to buy contentious Lot 9 in the Ashburton Business Park.

The Ashburton District Council has been in negotiations to sell the 10 hectare lot, which has consent to abstract water, to NZ Pure Blue, which plans to build a plant and sell bottled water.

Council confirmed it had received a second offer, but mayor Angus McKay says he can reveal nothing as the matter is commercially sensitive.

Branje said the second offer was believed to be another group wanting to bottle the water and sell it.

She said Bung the Bore was opposed to both bids and wanted the water to stay in the ground.

The organisation is holding a public meeting at the Tinwald Hall on Tuesday night to share what it knows about the deal and about how it could affect ratepayers.

Specialist speakers would talk about how water was connected around the district.

“We are going to have some diagrams that tell people about

recharge and we are going to tell them what we know in regard to the consent,” Mrs Branje said.

There will be a timeline of events and a chance to ask questions.

“This is a chance to get the facts around this issue. There is a lot of misinformation going on.”

She said Bung the Bore needed to know how strongly Ashburton people felt over the issue, so they could progress a legal challenge.

“We need to know if we have the support of the community. If they are telling us it is good, then we don’t want to go against the community . . . but I don’t think

they want to see this water gone.

“It is really important for people to come along. We are asking them to instruct us.”

The group is also looking for contributions to cover a $2000 legal cost already incurred. “We have had a case assessment for a judicial review done by a leading environmental barrister.”

Mrs Branje said the lack of water was being felt all over the district, with water levels low and some wells drying up.

The second offer for Lot 9 was discussed at Thursday’s Ashburton District Council meeting with members of the public excluded.

Special weekend for Ashburton RSA

The Ashburton RSA celebrated 100 years during a jam-packed weekend with a dinner, church service, tree planting and lunch.

The local branch was founded in May 1916 and was celebrated by people all over the district with events on Saturday and yesterday.

Centennial committee chairman John Nolan said more than 70 people attended the dinner which included speeches from Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew and mayor Angus McKay as well as a dance.

“We had a lovely dinner.”

The church service at St Andrew’s and the tree planting yesterday were also a success.

“It went really well, everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves.”

The three-year-old lone pine, which was grown from twin seeds in Dunkirk, was planted at the RSA by Mr McKay and Ashburton RSA president Maurice Baker to mark the milestone.

hit by train in Rakaia Police are continuing to investigate an incident in which a person was fatally hit by a train in Rakaia on Saturday night.

Emergency services and KiwiRail responded to the incident which occurred on the tracks at the Elizabeth Avenue level crossing at 8.53pm.

A KiwiRail spokesperson said a southbound freight train struck a person on the tracks at the level crossing between Bankside and Chertsey in Rakaia resulting in a fatality.

The train driver was relieved of his duties and will be offered counselling.

The incident resulted in the track being closed until 2am yesterday but trains are now running to schedule.

“Incidents like this are distressing and KiwiRail’s thoughts are with the family of the deceased, our staff and those who attended this incident.”

A police spokesperson said the incident is continuing to be investigated but there is no further update at the moment.

A St John spokesperson said an ambulance was sent but not needed due to the person being deceased at the time of arrival.

Earlier this month an Ashburton woman, aged in her 40s, died after being hit by a southbound freight train near the Maronan Road level crossing in Tinwald.

One man, 214 sentencings New Zealand’s most prolific criminal has been sentenced a “mind-blowing” 214 times.

Ministry of Justice figures paint a disturbing picture of Kiwis who spend their lives in and out of the court system, a system that experts say is failing.

The 20 people who have appeared before the courts the most times have been collectively sentenced 2562 times since 1980, but their offending is relatively low-level, raising questions about the effect of court sentences in curbing reoffending.

The man who was convicted 214 times is in his 70s, but was first convicted when he was 33, show figures obtained by the Herald on Sunday under the Official Information Act. His most serious offence was a non-aggravated sexual assault.

The data revealed that all those in the top 20 were men.

Seventeen were first convicted before they were 19 years old.

Lawyers and offender advocates said the high numbers raised serious questions about the effectiveness of criminal sentences.

Defence lawyer and former Crown prosecutor, Marc Corlett,

said the numbers were “mindblowing”.

“I have never seen numbers like this before,” he said.

“It just goes to show that we are using criminal law as a solution to social problems like mental health and substance abuse, and it is an extremely blunt instrument.”

Michelle Kidd, of Te Rangimarie Charitable Trust, said rehabilitation and mental health services could reduce such offending.

“It is quite clear to me that these people, who are aged over 40 and still coming through the court system for minor charges, are not getting the help they need.”

Kidd, who helped establish the New Beginnings Court, which sentences homeless to treatment, and the Auckland Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Court pilot, said most offenders she sees have complex substance abuse and mental health issues and if given help could stop offending.

“The options aren’t there, the only options they have are, ‘Finally, you have broken the law we can put you in prison’.”

Missing person found Police in Canterbury have praised the efforts of the public in assisting with Elise Davenport after she went missing on Friday.

Police began a search for the woman after she wandered off after a roadside incident at Lake Coleridge at about 12pm on Friday.

There were concerns about the woman as she had only recently arrived from England, had no knowledge of the local

area and would potentially be facing extremely cold temperatures. A police spokesperson said she was found uninjured by rescuers on Lyndon Road shortly before midnight on Friday.

“Police are pleased she has been found safely and would like to thank the public for their assistance in providing information.”

The woman was taken to a medical facility for health checks.

Council considering requests The Ashburton District Council has agreed to investigate using land next to the EA Networks Centre for sportsfields in the future.

Mid Canterbury Rugby asked council this week to progress the sportsfield development, which was stage two of a masterplan for the area. Council is also considering a request for break

out rooms in the centre’s sports house, which is the administration home of netball and hockey.

The sports groups, and Sport Canterbury, wanted more private areas they could use when needed.

The sports groups were among more than 130 people making submissions on council’s annual plan, which sets out how

it will spend rates money in the next year. Rates will rise 2.2 per cent for an Ashburton residential property and 5.4 per cent for a rural property.

Councillors made few changes to the plan that will affect rates following last week’s hearings and deliberations on not only the annual plan, but the waste management plan and open

spaces strategy. Decisions will be formally adopted at the June 30 council meeting.

Mayor Angus McKay said the issues raised were important to residents.

“We are now taking these all into account as we decide on our final activities in the annual plan.

We thank the community for taking part.”

Garage fire A garage in Tinwald received significant damage following a fire in the early hours of Saturday morning. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade spent just over an hour at the garage fire which started at 3.47am at a property on Agnes Street. Chief fire officer Alan Burgess said the single-vehicle garage, part of a lounge suite and a table were significantly damaged. The cause of the fire has not been yet been identified but does not appear to be suspicious, he said.

Assault charges

■ SISTER CITY

Two young men have been charged over an assault in which a police dog handler was knocked unconscious. A 21-year-old and a 17-year-old are both accused of injuring with intent, after the incident in South Auckland on Saturday.

Police said as the officer spoke to the driver, two men got out of the car and assaulted him. The officer was knocked unconscious before a passing truck driver scared off his attackers, who fled in a green Toyota Altezza. A passing ambulance crew treated the officer and took him to Middlemore Hospital. Both men will appear at Manukau District Court today.

30th anniversary celebration Ashburton and its Japanese sister city Minamiuonuma will celebrate the 30th anniversary of their sister city relationship in October next year.

The Ashburton District Council is planning a celebration in Ashburton to mark the occasion and has invited Minamiuonuma mayor Iguchi to come to Mid Canterbury.

The invitation was delivered personally by councillor Don McLeod, who was in Japan recently on a personal holiday.

Cr McLeod said although his party was non-council, they were billeted with locals.

“People were warm and hospitable. We were not a council delegation but were treated as one.

“The mayor remembered our previous visit.”

He said council should repay the same hospitality when the Minamiuonuma group visited next year.

Mayor Angus McKay said he and staff would work on a programme of anniversary events so it could be sent to the Japanese sister city in good time.

The exact anniversary date is October 14, next year.

Flood warning Wild weather has caused flooding on State Highway 2 – and police are warning motorists to take “extreme care”. Heavy rain has caused flooding through the Karangahake Gorge between Waihi and Paeroa. The road remains open, but police have advised those travelling in the area to take extreme care. Police are patrolling the area, and ask drivers to slow down and follow directions of officers if asked.

A special pink aqua class helped raise money for the Breast Cancer Foundation yesterday morning. The EA Networks Centre hosted the Pink Ribbon Aqua Class Breakfast in the pool followed by a morning tea of pink cupcakes. Gym supervisor Anna Johnson said the event was a massive success with more than $700 being raised for Breast Cancer New Zealand. “That was pretty awesome, we were pretty impressed with that.” There were about 60 people in the pool who all had a great time giggling and clapping, she said. Several of them were breast cancer survivors.

munity who want to maintain or develop their hobby skills and use these to help organisations like the Toy Library with repairs of children’s toys,” Mr McKay said.

He said the majority of rest homes are members of the organisation and their residents frequently attend MENZ Shed activities which provide much needed stimulus as well as enhancing the well-being of people who might

otherwise have potentially lonely lives.

The local trust bought a building suitable for its activities and then approached council asking whether a site might be available for them to house this.

“The council is happy to support this organisation for a couple of years in acknowledgment of the great things they do for members of our community.”

Samoan Language Week kicks off Samoan Language Week kicked off yesterday and for the first time an educational booklet is available to encourage New Zealanders to learn the language.

Sixty per cent of Samoans in New Zealand speak Gagana Samoa and it is the third most commonly spoken language behind English and Maori.

“I would like to see that number grow and Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa: Samoan Language Week is a time to focus on how we can make that happen,” the Minister for Pacific Peoples Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga said.

“The challenge for all of us during this language week is to find opportunities to use Gagana Samoa more in our community, churches and workplaces.

We also need to keep using the language for the rest of the year,” he said.

For the first time, a new education resource is created to help people learn the language.

“The resource supports Samoan Language Week with an explanation of the theme, pronunciation support, helpful words and phrases and a lot of activity ideas,” Mr Lotu-Iiga says.

Head-on crash Five people suffered minor injuries in a head-on crash in the eastern Bay of Plenty yesterday.

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Carren Larking said the accident happened just prior to 8am, near State Highway 2 on Maketu Rd. No one was trapped, but five people had minor injuries. They were attended to by paramedics.

House fire No one was in a South Island house engulfed by fire late on Saturday night. Southern Fire Communications shift leader Rewi Grace said firefighters confirmed after midnight that no one was in the house at Runanga, near Greymouth. However, the fire, which began about 11pm, is being treated as suspicious, Mr Grace said.

Serious head injury A 19-year-old whose car went head-on into a power pole in Waikato early yesterday is now in a stable condition. He suffered a serious head injury when his car came off State Highway One at Lichfield just after 4am. Police say the driver is from Tokoroa. He’s being monitored at the Intensive Care Unit at Waikato Hospital.

Power cut About 1000 homes in West Auckland were without power after a tree fell on a line in Titirangi about 4pm yesterday. Vector spokeswoman Sandy Hodge said the line was down in Konini Rd and crews worked to isolate the broken line and back-feed the electricity through other lines. The Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) has awarded a contract for electronic monitoring on fishing boats to Trident Systems. The firm’s general partner is a company that is 42 per cent owned by a subsidiary of Sanford. The remaining shareholders are other fishing and seafood companies.

“The Government has awarded the contract to monitor fishing companies to an entity owned and controlled by the

Sanford has been named in MPI reports, subsequently leaked to Newshub. In one, a fishing investigator inspected two Sanford vessels and said the weight of the catch was “understated” using a system that was “inherently biased”.

Mauger breaks his silence Bachelor Jordan Mauger has broken his silence, and hinted in an interview with Woman’s Day that family influence was the reason he didn’t choose Naz Khanjani in the show’s finale.

“I spoke to my family for about two hours after they’d met both girls and I asked them who they would most like to come for Christmas,” he said.

“I don’t want to say who they chose, but there were some who were judging Naz on what they’d seen up to that point on TV, rather than what they’d seen in person.”

She said: “I feel Jordan is a good Kiwi dude who tried but failed to find love in a manufactured world – and was vilified for it.”

Meanwhile, Khanjani says she totally agrees with Mauger, tweeting: “Get your copy of @WomansDayNZ – great read! I completely agree with Jordan & support him 100% in everything he says.”

Free parking could be the answer

T

he Ashburton District Council is halving the cost of parking in Ashburton’s CBD to help local businesses, but it might not be enough.

Ashburton retailers made a plea to council last month asking for an hour’s free parking or meters to be removed altogether due to the negative impact parking was having on their businesses.

This was considered but at a meeting last week council said they would compromise by only charging 50c an hour rather than $1 from July 1.

However, this might do little to sway people away from the big businesses which offer free parking dotted around town.

Retailers have said that unless the parking system is changed more empty lots will appear on Ashburton’s main street with businesses either closing down or moving to suburban areas with better parking and lower rents.

This is not something we want, we have too many empty shops that should be bustling.

Shouldn’t we be doing all we can to promote this as the more money spent in town the better as it has a flow-on effect.

We live in a time when not many people carry change around and not many people want to pay for parking seeing as they can park for free at other bigger shops or drive an hour up the road to Christchurch’s many malls.

People have also stopped parking in the CBD due to frustration over the town’s parking meters failing at times.

So, we should be proactive to encourage people to purchase products from locally-owned businesses and free parking might just do this.

It may not be a conventional suggestion as most councils charge for parking but it could be the thing that we need to boost the inner township.

Councillor Alan Totty said that infringements and fines make up the majority of income the council gets from parking.

If this is the case, having free parking should not have much of an effect on the council’s pocket but it might benefit our town.

ne of the good news stories from last week’s Budget for local employers and local young people is the Government’s announcement of an additional investment in apprenticeship training.

The Government is allocating $14.4 million over four years to enable the training of another 5500 apprentices nationwide by 2020.

This new funding will help meet projected skills shortages in high-demand industries like construction and infrastructure.

The construction sector is growing strongly and increased apprenticeship numbers will help fill skill gaps and provide the new people coming through to maintain that growth.

The Government has been working hard over the past three years on improving results for trainees and apprentices, keeping more 16 and 17-year-olds engaged in vocational training, and helping young people on benefits into skills training.

In 2013/14 we carried out major industry training reforms.

Since then, both apprenticeship numbers and completion rates have increased.

In 2014 the number of those in apprenticeship training was up by 11.5 per cent on the previous year and completion rates for apprentices were 88 per cent, compared with 72 per cent in 2009.

Last year, the number of new apprenticeships in trades such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical engineering reached the highest levels recorded in nearly a decade.

In total, there were more than 42,000 people enrolled in apprenticeships and apprenticeship training in 2015.

The Government recognises that tertiary education is a passport to higher skills, higher

wages, higher productivity, and higher growth for our economy.

This is why we are committed to continue improving tertiary education, lifting achievement, and focusing on better outcomes for students and taxpayers.

The Government’s aim is to help people not only into employment but into rewarding lifelong careers.

As part of the focus on trades training, this year’s Budget also included provision for an additional $9.6 million over four years to meet the growing demand for more Maori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTT) places for students.

Our aim is to boost the number of young Maori and Pasifika in employment, education, or training.

We want to help young people from all sectors of society to get the qualifications they need to succeed and play their part in growing our economy.

This will mean 2500 places for young Maori and Pasifika learners in MPTT programmes this year, and 3400 next year – up

We’re targeting 5000 learners annually by 2019.

MPTT brings tertiary providers, employers, and Maori and Pasifika communities together to recruit and support learners in pre-trades training and help them into employment or further training.

Participants in MPTT are more likely to complete their programmes than similar learners studying for the same qualifications elsewhere, and are more likely to progress into an apprenticeship.

The Tertiary Education Commission and the Ministry for Women are aiming to recruit more females into the MPTT programme.

In 2015, 23 per cent of learners in MPTT were women, and they had higher completion rates than their male counterparts.

All in all, this extra funding means extra opportunities for local young people looking to get into a trade and, down the track, more skilled workers to help local employers grow their businesses.

Thousands ‘at risk’ Thousands of civilians and hundreds of aid workers are “in immediate danger” in northern Syria, an aid group has warned, after a massive onslaught by Islamic State militants split the last rebel-held enclave north of Aleppo in two.

The “entire area of A’zaz,” near the Turkish border, was unsafe and civilians needed a humanitarian corridor to be allowed to get to safety, Karl Schembri, spokesman for the Norwegian Refugee Council in the Middle East, said at the weekend.

The jihadists stormed the defences of Marea, the main town in the southern part of the enclave, on Saturday after cutting it off from A’zaz the previous day, a monitoring group said. Heavy battles were taking place in outer parts of the town, said Rami Abdel-Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Ammar al-Najjar, an emergency rescue worker with the Syrian Civil Defence based in Marea, said 1500-2000 families were trying to leave the town.

In a sign of the rebels’ weak position, they handed over the village of Sheikh Issa adjoining Marea to rival Kurdish forces to facilitate safe passage for those fleeing, an activist based on the Syrian-Turkish border, Ammar Jello, said. Abdel-Rahman of the Observatory confirmed the handover.

The fighting in the enclave leaves over 160,000 people who had taken refuge in the A’zaz area caught once more in a conflict zone, according to UN figures.

The threatened enclave is the last rebelheld territory north of Aleppo. In February it was cut off from Aleppo city by a Russianbacked government offensive.

35 hit by Quake like an ‘atomic bomb’ lightning at footie Thirty-five people, including 30 children, have been injured after lightning struck during a football match in western Germany.

Three adults, the referee among them, suffered serious injuries when lightning struck the children’s game in the town of Hoppstaedten on Saturday, police said.

Witnesses immediately performed CPR on the victims, and one man was taken to hospital in a helicopter.

The 30 children aged nine to 11 and two other adults suffered irregular heartbeats. They were taken to hospital as a precautionary measure, but were considered only to be slightly injured.

The match had just ended when the lightning hit.

“There was no rain and no dark sky according to witnesses,” the police spokesman said.

Meteorologists said three storm cells were moving through the area at the time of the incident.

The German weather service had warned of heavy storms across the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

A string of earthquakes that shook Western Australia’s Goldfields region at the weekend had the strength of an “atomic bomb” blasting underground, rattling windows and sending locals fleeing outside.

Four earthquakes hit near Norseman, including a magnitude 5.2 reportedly felt as far away as Perth.

It was the largest seismic event in WA since a magnitude 5.0 earthquake hit Kalgoorlie in April 2010, leaving several buildings badly damaged.

The first quake on Saturday was magnitude 4.9, striking at 11.30pm AWST. The 5.2 was about an hour later and was followed by a 3.2 magnitude tremor about 1.44am and another of magnitude 3.0 around 6am.

Geoscience Australia senior seismologist Dan Jaksa said the quakes were caused by tectonic stress due to Australia’s continental plate moving about seven centimetres a year.

The one that hit shortly after midnight was the equivalent to an atomic bomb going off, Mr Jaksa said.

“When we see a nuclear test occur, they’re generally a magnitude 5,” he said.

While Geoscience Australia estimated the 5.2 could have been felt up to 206km away, Mr Jaksa said there had been reports of the quakes being felt as far away as Perth, some 600km away.

Brodie Woods, who works at Norseman BP, told AAP he woke up to the first tremor, thinking someone was trying to break into his house.

“The window in my bedroom was rattling like crazy,” he said.

Mr Woods said he ran outside to see who

was trying to get in - joining most of his neighbours who thought the same thing until they realised it was a quake.

He then thought it was a nearby mine blasting, but then there was another.

Claye Poletti, the owner of the Bottlemart Express Norseman Hotel, said the 5.2 felt “pretty severe”.

“It kept on shaking, shaking and shaking,” Mr Poletti told AAP. He said the 1934-built character pub didn’t sustain any damage but the quake rattled the two-storey landmark.

“It rocked the old building. It shook pretty well.”

Mr Poletti said dogs could be heard barking madly, but Shadow his Staffordshire terrier wasn’t too worried.

“He’s pretty tough - he probably thought it was a heavy train like everyone else did.”

Mr Jaksa said the quakes were significant but common in WA, particularly in the Wheatbelt region.

However, he considers Australian earthquakes “among the most dangerous in the world” because they happen randomly.

“We’re just not used to them, they’ll come out of the blue and in random places, so we’re just not as prepared,” he said.

Mr Jaksa said it was important to stay inside and get under furniture.

“To run outside is the most dangerous thing to do - the majority of deaths occur outside the buildings,” he said.

And if outside, try to be in a clear space to avoid any falling objects.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services said it had not received any notifications of building damage.

Creamy pesto chicken with pappardelle 250g fettuccine or pappardelle 1T olive oil 500g Tegel Lean & Lite Skinless Breast Fillets, cut into chunks 1/4 C basil pesto 3/4 C cream 1/4 C finely grated parmesan Basil leaves to garnish ■ Cook the fettuccine or pappardelle following the packet directions.

■ Heat the oil in a frying pan. Add the chicken and cook over high heat until it is golden brown.

■ Add the pesto and cream to the pan and cook over medium heat for a further three to four minutes or until the sauce is thick and creamy and the chicken is cooked through.

■ Stir the drained pasta through the hot sauce. Place into serving bowls and top with the grated parmesan and basil leaves.

Harry Potter’s magical world

Hogwart’s Castle dominates the skyline and is where The Forbidden Journey begins and magic become reality.

And with that incantation The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood came to life in front of an illuminated Hollywood sky.

Potter fans have been dreaming of this for years – the opportunity to visit the magical world J.K. Rowling created and to walk the corridors of Hogwarts, which has been brought to life in a 60m high castle.

And despite being built in the Hollywood Hills, the town of Hogsmeade with its snow-covered rooftops actually feels like England.

While a butterbeer or 10 is essential, so is checking out every nook and cranny of the spectacularly detailed world.

Sit outside the Owl Post, look up and you’ll notice the intricate detail – which even includes some marks left by the birds.

If you feel like a snack go to Honeydukes and get yourself an iconic chocolate frog just like Harry did in The Philosopher’s Stone or some Bertie Botts everyflavoured beans. Thankfully there are no “booger-flavoured ones” for sale.

And if you’re craving a greater feed head to Three Broomsticks Tavern for some English-pub food and a cold ale.

Once fully stocked up it’s time to fully immerse yourself in the world and wind your way up the hill to Hogwarts castle and through its iron gates, for that is where the main attraction The Forbidden Journey occurs, and

magic becomes reality.

What sets this ride apart aside from the high-definition, 3D experience and living out your Potter dreams is the actual wait.

Yes, that’s right, the wait.

It’s not a ride you want to grab the fast pass for.

The staircases may not move but the waiting area inside the castle is full of Potter memorabilia, some of it from the films and it gives you a real feeling of being in, to borrow from another iconic film “a world of pure imagination”.

Visit the Gryffindor Common Room where the Fat Lady and other paintings on the wall have an argument. That’s right the paintings talk – magic.

Then it’s off to the Defence against the Dark Arts classroom where you can almost feel the presence of Alan Rickman’s Severus Snape as he delivers a scalding rebuke on young Mr Potter.

Never fear though, you will soon find solace across from Albus Dumbledore’s office, where you can almost see the former headmaster and those with a keen eye will notice some real pieces from the movie sets.

All this leads you to the main attraction, which is the Forbidden Journey itself – it’s a wild ride.

The enhanced 3D experience is one you won’t forget, and if you’ve ever fancied a game of Quidditch, it’s time to whack on your goggles and hop aboard your very own Nimbus 3000 as you follow Harry and Ron. Watch out for the blodgers and quaffles as you chase down that golden snitch, not to mention some of the other nefarious creatures out to get you, especially the dementors.

Once you have completed your Forbidden Journey there is plenty to do although it’s hard to recommend Universal’s first rollercoaster The flight of the Hippocriff. It’s

built for youngsters and the ride itself lasts about 10 seconds.

Once you’re finished with the rides check out all the stores as there is something for everyone WiseAcres Wizarding Equipment and Gladrags wizardwear are especially good and it’s well worth trying on a sorting hat as you wish to be anything but a Hufflepuff.

The real highlight is Ollivanders.

It’s the wand that chooses the wizard ... and this one belongs to Slytherin, gifted the wand made of Hawthorn wood with a core of unicorn hair. That’s right it was the wand of Harry’s nemesis Draco Malfoy.

The wand fitting is a wonderful experience and even if you leave lighter in the pocket is well worth it.

Entry to the park is $US95 ($NZ140) a day for those 10 and over, and $US89 ($NZ131) for ages 3-9. Prices increase by $US10 ($NZ14.75) at weekends and Harry Potter World is especially popular, the park pre-selling out before its opening.

Warriors force Game 7

By Cliff Brunt Golden State’s Klay Thompson made a playoff-record 11 3-pointers and scored 41 points as the Warriors took out a mustwin game at Oklahoma City yesterday 108-101, sending the NBA Western Conference finals to Game 7.

Stephen Curry bounced back from a slow start to finish with 29 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.

The Warriors, who set the league’s regular-season record with 73 wins, will host Game 7 on Tuesday, and the winner will play Cleveland in the NBA Finals.

“I just so proud of everybody, man,” Thompson said.

“We were down almost the whole game and we never gave up.”

The Warriors were well beaten on their previous visits to Oklahoma City in this series, but dominate from downtown in this one, making 21 of 44 3-pointers while the Thunder was a miserable 3 of 23.

“About time we had a stretch in this building where we imposed our will,” Curry said.

Kevin Durant scored 29 points and Russell Westbrook added 28 for the Thunder.

But Durant made just 10 of 31 shots and Westbrook was 10 of 27.

Trying to become the 10th team to overcome a 3-1 deficit, the Warriors trailed much of the game and were behind by eight going to the fourth quarter.

Thompson kept them in it with four 3-pointers in just over seven minutes to start the period.

Curry then hit two 3s, the second of which tied the game 99-99 with 2:47 to play.

Thompson’s 3 with 1:35 to play put the Warriors up 104-101.

The Thunder, who blew a number of fourth-quarter leads during the regular season, fell apart in the final minutes after Golden State had gone ahead.

Westbrook lost control of the ball, and after Thompson missed a 3, Westbrook turned the ball over again.

NBA player shot dead New Orleans Pelicans NBA player Bryce Dejean-Jones has died after being shot in a Dallas apartment, police said. The Pelicans confirmed the 23-year-old guard’s death after he was shot early yesterday. Dallas police said officers responded to a 3:20am call at an apartment, where the resident told them that Dejean-Jones kicked open his front door while he was asleep and failed to respond when he called out. The man then grabbed a handgun and opened fire when Dejean-Jones kicked his bedroom door. - Reuters

Mid Canterbury’s Senior B teams kicked off their Centennial Mug campaigns on Saturday after Southern retained the Michael Duff Memorial Trophy last weekend.

Southern carried their fine form over to maintain their 100 per cent record with a 24-15 win over Collegiate.

It was a more convincing win for Southern than the last time the two sides met, when Jason Gill’s men edged out a 21-19 win.

Meanwhile, Rakaia suffered the worst loss of the round with a 47-0 thumping from Mt Somers.

After trailing 26-0 at halftime in blustery conditions at the Rakaia Domain, Mt Somers piled on another 21 points

in the second stanza to record their second biggest win of the season.

In the day’s other fixtures, Hampstead will be pleased with their 19-13 win over a solid Celtic side, while Allenton posted a 29-7 win over Methven.

Crusaders work overtime to crack Blues’ defence The Blues, according to coach Tana Umaga, were tired this week.

They were yawning in team meetings after their travel from Johannesburg via Perth, the result not of boredom but disrupted sleeping patterns.

His players, Umaga wryly noted, don’t usually have trouble sleeping.

There was nothing tired about the way they defended against the Crusaders on Saturday night, however.

The Crusaders, with intentions of taking over the competition lead, had to work for everything.

Yes, the visitors sneaked down the left touchline after nine minutes through their gi-

ant wing Nemani Nadolo courtesy of a pair of slick hands from skipper Kieran Read, but for the rest of the half, the red and blacks couldn’t breach them.

In the second half, Nadolo fancied he scored through a mass of bodies near the posts, but for a last-ditch suffocation by the Blues’ defence.

A significant moment in the first half, if not the match, was the tackle by Blues prop Charlie Faumuina on Crusaders right wing Johnny McNicholl.

Big Charlie had McNicholl lined up from five minutes before, or so it seemed. Faumuina connected around the shoulder area with a perfectly-legal hit which flattened McNicholl and forced him from the field.

There were plenty of smaller moments each side of Faumuina’s collision and they all added up to a burst of self-belief for the home side. Loose forwards Jerome Kaino and Kara Pryor were in the thick of it and with each attack the Blues repelled, the more confident they appeared to get.

The Blues were blown off the park in Christchurch in their round two encounter.

Not this time.

But in the end, the workload told. Crusaders centre Kieron Fonotia went through Ihaia West for the evergreen Andy Ellis to go over.

Fellow midfielder Ryan Crotty made a break and it all began to flow for the Crusaders.

In the end, it was Richie Mo’unga’s kicking which got the visitors over the line and on to the top of the table.

The Lions have sounded a Super Rugby warning from South Africa ahead of the four-week break for June test matches.

In South Africa, the Lions produced an exhilarating performance to run in seven tries in a 56-20 win at three-time champions the Bulls, a rare and emphatic loss for the Bulls at their normally formidable Loftus Versfeld stadium in Pretoria.

Burly center Rohan Janse van Rensburg scored the first and the last tries for the Johannesburgbased Lions, who cemented their place at the top of the South African table with an attention-grabbing win in the Highveld derby.

The Lions played at a whirlwind pace and were 25-8 up at halftime through tries by Janse van Rensburg, center partner Lionel Mapoe and prop Julian Redelinghuys.

Scrumhalf Faf de Klerk was the attacking linchpin for the Lions and also grabbed one of their four second-half tries.

The Lions’ emergence as South Africa’s form team was recognised later Saturday when Springboks coach Allister Coetzee gave first international call-ups to De Klerk, wing Ruan Combrinck and flanker Jaco Kriel for South Africa’s upcoming series against Ireland.

Also in South Africa, center Daniel du Plessis scored on his Super Rugby debut to send the Stormers on their way to a muchneeded 31-24 win over the Cheetahs, putting the Stormers second in the conference behind the Lions and in the playoff places.

Powerful wing Nemani Nadolo and replacement scrumhalf Andy Ellis scored tries in each half for the Crusaders and flyhalf Richie Mo’unga kicked 16 points to beat the Blues in Auckland.

They head into the international break with a good chance of an eighth southern hemisphere rugby crown.

“It wasn’t the performance we were after to end this part of the season but there was certainly a lot of guts and a bit of character,” Crusaders captain Kieran Read said.

The Chiefs had returned to first place last week, but surrendered their position as a result of being soundly beaten 45-25 on Friday night by Australia’s New South Wales Waratahs.

Australia’s ACT Brumbies scored 10 tries to overwhelm Japan’s Sunwolves 66-5 and move into first place in the Australian conference, overtaking New South Wales.

Australia captain Stephen Moore scored a brace for the Brumbies to put him in good cheer ahead of the Wallabies’ June series against England.

Wing Nigel Ah Wong also crossed twice.

Rakaia’s quest to become the second Mid Canterbury team to win the Luisetti Seeds Combine Country Competition continued with a victory over Lincoln on Saturday, while Celtic’s hopes were dashed in Cheviot.

Rakaia got off to a perfect start as wing Seta Koroitamana touched down in the corner within five minutes of kick-off in their quarter-final tie.

First five-eighth Andrew Letham failed to convert in blustery conditions but was on target from a penalty moments later with a solid effort.

With the wind behind them, Rakaia continued to pressure Lincoln and it wasn’t long before Koroitamana found his way through again for his and the home side’s second try of the afternoon.

Letham again judged the wind

correctly and slotted his conversion to collect the extras as Rakaia increased their lead to 15-0 with little under 20 minutes played.

From the kick-off Rakaia poured in for phase after phase as the stretched Lincoln defence desperately held on to prevent any further damage to their semi-final aspirations, but it wasn’t enough, as flanker Harry Ashworth forced his way over the line, but Letham was off target from his conversion as the wind continued to play its part.

After being pinned in their own 22 for prolonged periods, Lincoln gathered some momentum of their own and were rewarded with a try under the posts from wing Marc Pietzner and first five Matt Golding did well to convert into the wind for a 20-7 half time score.

Lincoln were at it again early in the second half as lock Ru-

pert Elworthy crossed over to cut Rakaia’s lead.

Golding was again on target from his conversion to bring his side with-in seven points.

With plenty of time left to play, the Rakaia faithful could have been forgiven for expecting a comeback.

But Rakaia managed to batten down the hatches to book themselves a semi-final berth against the formidable Southbridge side next weekend.

Celtic’s Country Cup bid came to an end in a tightly contested 25-21 loss to Glenmark.

Shane Enright’s greens let their lead slip twice against determined opponents.

First half tries from Christian Vainerere and Ben Faasavala along with some dependable kicking from Nathan McCloy gave Celtic a 15-9 cushion at halftime, but a lack of discipline kept Glenmark in the contest as

the home side slotted six penalties in all.

McCloy’s kicking put Celtic ahead again at 21-18 in the second period before Glenmark scored their first try of the encounter with eight minutes left to bring the curtain down on Celtic’s title aspirations.

In their Canterbury Rugby Supporters’ Club Plaque fixtures, Southern picked up a 29-12 win over West Melton in Mayfield while Hampstead were downed 27-15 by Ohoka.

Hampstead will next be in action against Southern in a Mid Canterbury derby on Friday evening, as both clubs look to end the competition on a high.

Meanwhile, Methven recorded their first win of the season on Saturday.

Andy Pearce’s side saw off Prebbleton 19-8 in Methven in their Canterbury Rugby Supporters’ Club Plate fixture.

New All Blacks aiming to find a higher level

By Patrick Mckendry On the eve of the All Blacks’ three-test series against Wales, coach Steve Hansen has spoken of his team taking on the challenge of going to a new level after last year’s World Cup victory.

In naming his squad of 32 players for the series, including six new caps, Hansen there were no thoughts of re-building, only reestablishing.

“Our mindset is not one of rebuilding, but re-establishing; moving to a higher level,” he said.

“That’s our challenge - to take

this team to a higher level from where we left after the Rugby World Cup.” The form of uncapped loose forwards Ardie Savea of the Hurricanes, Elliot Dixon and Liam Squire from the Highlanders has been rewarded, with Chiefs fullback Damian McKenzie also called in.

All four will provide X-factor if given the opportunity.

Chiefs midfielder Seta Tamanivalu and Blues prop Ofa Tu’ungafasi are the other new entrants, the former in the mix to replace Conrad Smith and Ma’a

Nonu and the latter brought in due to his ability to play both sides of the scrum.

Hansen said of McKenzie: “He’s been in form. He’s exciting. He’s still got a lot of things in his game that he needs to grow and work on and you’d expect that from a young guy.

It’s an opportunity for us to not only look at the now but also the future.”

Of Squire, a 25-year-old impressing in the deep south after moving there from the Chiefs, Hansen said: “His tackling is very dominant. He’s got X-factor when

it comes to ball carrying. As a forward he’s extremely quick and he has a high workrate.”

Squire’s team-mate Dixon falls into the same category.

One player celebrating a return is fullback Israel Dagg, not selected for the World Cup due to injury, and playing superbly for the Crusaders after a late start to the season.

“He looks really sharp.

“He has always been good under the high ball and he’s continued to do that and his defence has improved from where it was.”

Sonny Bill Williams has agreed to stay in New Zealand and has signed what is thought to be a three-year deal that will take him through to the 2019 World Cup. Having switched between league and rugby twice since 2008, Williams is determined to make it to a third World Cup with the All Blacks.

He has rejected offers to return to the NRL and rejoin Toulon to give the remainder of his football career to the 15-man game and New Zealand rugby.

Recent promotion to the All Blacks’ leadership group helped convince the 30-year-old that Steve Hansen sees him as a vital part of the national side.

Williams has won 33 test caps and two World Cup winners’ medals but has not been a regular starter.

With Ma’a Nonu having retired, the way has been paved for Williams to establish himself as the All Blacks’ preferred second fiveeighth.

Williams has previously signed only one-year deals but his certainty that he wants to win 50 test caps and be remembered as a great All Black is thought to have persuaded him to make a longer commitment.

By doing that, he was also able to benefit from the newly-signed broadcast deal. Williams, like all senior players in New Zealand, will enjoy a massively-improved pay deal as a result of the 100 per cent increase in TV income.

He will also be allowed to box professionally as part of the deal.

Parramatta coach Brad Arthur has admitted that the scandal-hit NRL club has finally hit rock bottom, with the pending exit of Junior Paulo the latest development in a horror season. Arthur confirmed that Paulo has been pulled out of Monday night’s match against Newcastle as the club and his management wrap up negotiations on an early release to join Canberra. Paulo’s exit comes just a fortnight after Nathan Peats was forced out of the club due to the Eels’ salary cap breach, while star halves Corey Norman and Kieran Foran have also been rocked by separate off-field dramas.

All four senior men’s and women’s teams were in action in their respective Mid-South Canterbury hockey first division fixtures on Saturday, producing a mixed set of results.

Ladies’ division one front runners Hampstead travelled south to lock horns with Cambridge and showed plenty of quality in trying conditions.

Hampstead made the most of having the wind behind them in the first half and took a 3-0 lead in to the sheds thanks to goals from Shannon Thomson-Laing,

Nikita Moore and Helen France.

Cambridge came out firing in the second stanza as the weather continued to deteriorate, but Hampstead stood firm to take the 3-0 win and keep their unbeaten record intact.

Meanwhile, Hampstead-Collegians had a less memorable outing in a 3-1 loss to Geraldine in Ashburton.

Despite dominating possession and creating more chances than the visitors, Geraldine took a 2-0 lead in to half time.

Kate Donald pulled one back for Hampstead-Collegians with a fine individual goal but Geral-

dine netted a third to put the tie out of reach and secure a second win of an inconsistent campaign.

In the men’s first division, Wakanui Black played host to Northern Hearts while Wakanui Blue took on Tainui in Timaru.

Black failed to contain Hearts in the first half and found themselves 2-0 down against the run of play.

Mitch Moore’s side dominated possession again in the second half but failed to produce an end product as Hearts held out for the 2-0 victory.

Wakanui Blue had a better day, but did give up their lead to draw

with Tainui in dismal weather.

Sam Moore’s Blues led 2-0 just after half time with goals from Hayden Bonnington and Bradley Going, but Tainui fought back as brothers Nick and Josh Dalziel found the net.

Nick scored twice in quick succession before Josh put the Oamaru side ahead.

With time ebbing away Blue’s determination paid off as Paul Everest levelled proceedings late on for a 3-3 stalemate.

The men’s and women’s divisions will return to action on June 11 with representative fixtures scheduled for next weekend.

Drastic action overdue in the Warriors camp

T

he Warriors say they have drawn a line in the sand after their limp defeat to the Raiders, but the question is why it took so long to get to that point.

It was easy to see some time ago things were in a bad way at Mt Smart and that drastic action needed to be taken.

Coach Andrew McFadden has indicated some big-name players face the chop for Saturday’s game against the Broncos and there need to be many changes.

It can’t be a case of shuffling and dropping a couple to the bench because that’s not a strong message. The changes need to either be plentiful in number or in the ‘quality’ of players.

Some say Simon Mannering is vulnerable but that would be

unfair. He might not have been the Mannering we know but he has a proven record and is a great competitor.

Ben Matulino is another possibility and that would be a good call. His numbers just aren’t stacking up right now and, given his size and ability, he should be leading from the front.

Dropping Shaun Johnson would be a huge statement but it’s not one I think McFadden should make. Johnson has struggled this season but I can’t see them winning at all without him.

What he needs to do is take the ball to the line more, in the way Johnathan Thurston, Daly Cheery-Evans and Mitchell Pearce do and Brad Fittler and Andrew Johns before that.

Just because Johnson is a half, it doesn’t mean he should always be

protected and if he put his body on the line and was prepared to get knocked about, it might not only improve his confidence but show others the need to do the same.

You can’t always wear a dinner suit. Sometimes you have to don the overalls.

I was interested to hear the Warriors players held their own honesty session mid-week.

I’m a bit dubious about them, particularly given some can be offended by what is said in the sessions and then work behind the scenes to undermine others. In my experience, they don’t always work with Polynesian players but there comes a time when everyone in life has to eventually face up to and be honest about criticism.

McFadden needed to have eyes

and ears in that meeting to know what was said to act on things.

It’s time for more bad eggs to depart, and not just players but staff. McFadden needs people around him he can trust to deliver the message when he’s not around.

It’s what has happened in the Kiwis around culture and values following the 2013 World Cup. You know that if Stephen Kearney had been away the week they learned of the latest prescription pills saga, his assistants would have done exactly the same thing and not selected those involved.

We’ll probably see a reaction from the Warriors next weekend, and it will be just like them to beat the Broncos, but it’s what happens the following week and the week after that that really counts.

Pressure on Marshall St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor says star Benji Marshall will have to prove his fitness on the field before the club can make a judgment call on his NRL future.

The off-contract Marshall has been plagued by a problematic hamstring that has prevented him from stringing together more than two games in a row this season.

The 31-year-old made a successful return from his latest injury battle in the side’s 14-10 win over North Queensland on Saturday night, but McGregor said Marshall will have to do more to earn a new deal. “Benji, at the moment, just needs to play good footy for the club and we’re looking forward to that.”

Old-timer shows up rivals John Gray is showing no signs of slowing up and the sprightly veteran provided his rider with a victory to savour at Ellerslie on Saturday.

The rising 12-year-old opened his account for the winter with success in the Bidvest 1600 under Samantha Collett, who pipped her mother Trudy Thornton aboard Celebrity Miss in a driving finish.

“It’s not often I can outride Mum – I threw everything at the horse,” she said.

Trained by Antony Fuller at Tauranga, John Gray was having his third run back from a spell and, after a less than encouraging start to the campaign, he started at odds of 40-1.

“I knew he was well, although I have to be honest and say we were expecting better efforts in his first two runs,” Fuller said.

“Maybe he didn’t go as well because he was a bit fat.”

John Gray’s workload was subsequently stepped up and the senior citizen of the open handicap ranks responded positively.

“He’s away now and he will be acking up in the Cornwall Handicap next weekend, providing everything is okay with him after this race,” Fuller said.

“I was watching on Saturday and at the half mile she just seemed to be cruising along when the rest of them were making pretty heavy weather of it.

“Once she opened up in the straight it was over quite quickly and Johnathan (Parkes) let her coast to the line with her ears pricked.”

Searle will now be sitting down and plotting a course for the mare over the winter months with the aim of picking up a stakes victory.

“She has a little bit of blacktype behind her but it would be nice to pick up a win or two at that level,” he said.

“I haven’t looked around at what there is for her but I will do that sometime over the next few days.”

Mid Canterbury Netball’s Umpire Committee hosted its annual Positive Participation Day at the EA Net-

works Centre Stadium on Saturday.

The day promotes positive conduct, sportsmanship and respect on and off the netball court.

Rickard said the day’s message was well received as all ways.

“The day promotes positive behavior both on court and the on sidelines within netball,” she said.

“We’re thankful for the volunteers, without umpires on the court we wouldn’t have a game and admin, support, bench officials, everyone involved.”

The 11th NBS Ashburton Duathlon Series began yesterday at a new venue with a new course, which proved a resounding success.

One hundred and twenty participants of varying ages and

abilities braved the cold for the first of the four-race series at the Ashburton Showgrounds.

The run/walk section took place in the enclosed area of the showgrounds, while the bike leg was an out-and-back ride on Seafield Road.

short course winner with a time of 33.49secs followed by Natasha Waddell and Isabella Roulston, who couldn’t be separated in second place in 35.57secs, while Jaxson Whyte (37.53secs) took third place honours.

Meanwhile, Jake Marryatt (58.38secs), Sam Letham

(1.03.27secs) and Mark Sissons (1.07.19) placed first, second and third respectively in the long course.

Race co-ordinator John Moore said the new venue and course were a big hit with the competitors.

“It went really well.

“The change of venue was fantastic and went dowm well,” he said.

“The sun came out in the end, so that was great and people really seemed to enjoy it.”

The second instalment of the four race series will be on June 26.
