In response to calls for Ashburton College students to be expelled following last week’s assault incident, principal Ross Preece says exclusion is not always the best path.

college were brought in from outside the school or were a continuation of evening or weekend events. In dealing with those, schools could not instantly exclude misbehaving students; they were required to try all avenues to keep young people engaged in education, he said.

Preece was responding to calls from parents for the school to deal with bullying incidents by kicking out any students responsible.

However, there was a proper process to follow, he said, and for the most serious incidents, students were suspended. They were then required to appear before a board of trustees disciplinary hearing committee, which must consider all factors.

Ex-local waits out Aust cyclone

If Mid Canterbury people think a gale force nor’wester is bad, they want to try living in the eye of a cyclone, says ex-Ashburton man Duncan Lane.

Lane is living in Airlie Beach, one of the areas of Australia worst hit by Cyclone Debbie and he says the hours when the cyclone was at its peak are hours he never wants to live through again.

Conditions were severe in the hours before the cyclone made landfall, but when it finally hit nothing could have prepared anyone for the following horrific hours, he said.

“We lost power at 10pm Monday and haven’t got it back yet. We were hunkered down in our offices on the Terrace and we watched a roof flying off and landing on a balcony below.”

Over the hours the cyclone hammered Airlie and surrounding areas, Lane said there was nothing anyone could do except hope the building they were in would stand up to its force.

“We were lucky, our buildings were the original cyclone centre for Airlie so they were pretty solid, we felt pretty safe,” he said.

He waited out the worst of the storm with work mates.

Long time residents reckoned Cyclone Debbie was the worst storm they’d seen in years, Lane said.

While the cyclone meant power was out, roads were closed and

most telecommunications were lost, Telstra saved the day for many, Lane said.

“I was able to ring mum and dad and at least with cellphones we’ve still got internet and email.”

He works at the Airlie Beach Hotel, but like every other business in Airlie it’s closed.

While the area is still relatively isolated, Lane said he’s confident food supplies generally are holding up, but authorities are now attempting to bring in drinking water and food.

Locals aren’t doing it as tough as tourists, however, as most are keen to leave the cyclone devas-

tated areas, he said.

More than 63,000 homes are still without power, including in Mackay, Sarina, Airlie Beach and Proserpine and people stranded in the region have been told to expect more heavy rain and power shortages for days.

Cheating student passed course, says former lecturer A student who was caught cheating three times was still allowed to pass the course, his lecturer says.

The former lecturer, who asked to remain anonymous, said he resigned from the Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) in protest after the institute refused to discipline the student.

“The head of faculty refused to discipline or sanction the student, and instead tried to place the blame for the student cheat-

ing on to me for being too strict with marking,” the lecturer said.

“Appeals by me to the Student Conduct Manual fell on deaf ears, and the head of faculty decision to give the student three free passes on cheating was supported at the highest level of management.

“Working in NZ tertiary education feels like working in the twilight zone, where students receiving a fail grade are always an unacceptable outcome for management, and student cheating

is reframed as ‘staff failing to provide adequate student support’.

“It’s not just MIT. In my experience as an academic moderator, it’s [almost] everywhere, both private and state-funded tertiary education.”

The Herald has been inundated with similar stories from universities and polytechnics after a Tertiary Education Union survey of 1006 lecturers found that 63 per cent felt they had come under more pressure in the past

decade to pass a higher percentage of students. The union’s MIT branch president Jill Jones said her faculty was given a target to pass 85 per cent of students and lecturers who did not achieve the target were grilled about it in their performance reviews.

An MIT graduate who studied performing arts there from 2012 to 2015 said tutors “were pressured to pass students no matter what”.

“The tutors voiced their disap-

proval in class, it was that bad.

‘They have to pass’,” the graduate said.

Another former MIT student said his lecturer gave his students their final exam a week early.

“He then marked the answers and went through the questions with his students to show them where they had gone wrong. They then sat the end-of-term exam for real and still had students who failed,” the former student said.

Additionally, schools had a moral imperative to guide students through their turbulent teenage years and removing some would only see their behaviour become worse.

“Our prisons are occupied with many who were excluded from school, and the easy path would be to exclude wrong-doers.

However, society and Ashburton would wear the social cost for decades to come,” Preece said.

He was responding to concerns raised by mother Nicola Evans.

Her 14-year-old daughter Kaylee Evans was the victim of a vicious assault at the school on Friday last week.

Meanwhile, Ashburton Senior Sergeant Scott Banfield said Youth Aid was investigating the alleged assault.

He did not wish to comment on any bullying incidents at the college, but did say police had been made aware of bullying at the college.

“While all serious physical assaults should always be reported to police, bullying on school grounds is a matter that first and foremost needs to be addressed by the school,” Banfield said.

Opportunity for traffic lights goes begging

As wastewater pipes are installed across State Highway 1 at Walnut Avenue (above), Ashburton could be sitting on the perfect opportunity to have traffic signals installed at that intersection, an engineer says.

Ashburton District Council projects and operations manager Viv Eyberg will have contractors digging out the intersection’s traffic island next month, ahead of pipe laying and with traffic lights already planned, there was an opportunity to take advantage of a major road dig out to save money by doing two jobs at once.

The traffic light project has been on the New Zealand Transport Agency’s work list for several years, but has stalled because lights at the West Street intersection need to be installed in tandem with lights at the East Street intersection, Eyberg said.

“I’d like to do this now but it will only happen if our council pays for the East Street lights. It’s a bit of a stalemate,” he said.

The Walnut Avenue lights have continued to be pushed down the agency’s priority list.

“Unfortunately you can’t have them at one intersection and not the other, but there’s a million bucks involved and the previous council didn’t have an appetite to spend this. They asked why should ratepayers pay and not NZTA.” The wastewater project may be testing motorists’ patience, but traffic behaviour had been outstanding over the weeks the project had, and would continue to run, Eyberg said.

Work on Harrison Street from Oak Grove to Alison Street was almost completed and contractors are now installing new pipes at the East Street–Walnut Avenue intersection.

The work is part of a major waste water project that will see larger pipes installed from Allenton down to William Street.

The East Street section should be wrapped up by the end of this week, Eyeberg said and pipes will then be placed under the railway line before contractors move to the West Street intersection.

“This will be our next major disruption. We’ll take the traffic island out of the middle. One night we’ll get in and whip it out and asphalt it over. We’re hoping the state highway will remain two lanes but it will zig zag.”

While one dig, two projects might have been the ideal, the timing of traffic light installation was out of the council’s hands, said roading manager Brian Fauth.

“It’s an NZTA project and both intersections need to be treated together as one project, so NZTA should be paying. Because we’re

not prepared to pay for it the whole thing has been put back a bit.”

In the last council term, councillors said they supported the project but wouldn’t support it financially – at this stage, Fauth said.

Indicative costs suggested the project could run to $5 million and while NZTA would pay all of the costs associated with the West Street work the council would have to foot the bill for about half of the East Street work, about $1.25 million, he said.

“We feel we have higher priorities than this such as the second bridge.”

With the West Street intersection completed, the new pipe will be connected to the existing smaller pipe on Walnut Avenue until the final stretch of pipe replacement from West Street to Middle Road is done in the next financial year.

In brief Easter trading While many parts of New Zealand will be treating Easter Sunday this year as a normal business day, shops will remain closed in the Ashburton District. While the Shop Trading Hours Amendment Act 2016 cleared the way for councils to write a policy that would allow businesses to open on Easter Sunday, the council decided it wanted the status quo to remain.

When it surveyed businesses to gauge interest in trading on that day it found there was little demand for opening on all or part of the day. The council will revisit this if there is demand in the future.

Salvation Army students gear up to colour up

Weeks of training will pay off for eight Salvation Army Education and Employment students this weekend, when they take part in the Ashburton Get Coloured event.

The popular 5km run will be held on April 2 at Lake Hood, presented by the CanInspire

Charitable Trust. Salvation Army student mentor Keri Kuru said they had all decorated t-shirts they would be wearing on the day.

Students are into their fifth week of training, which consists of them running and walking around the block.

“They’re building up to do 5km in increasing times,” she said.

“Anything active is good and it’s positive to be challenging themselves.”

Get Coloured co-ordinator Louise Duke said they had received about 650 entries so far for Sunday’s event.

Tickets are almost at the capped limit, so she encouraged people to get in quick.

“There’s so much excitement

in town,” she said. “It’s such an amazing vibe.

“So many people are getting on board and I’m really astounded by the support from the community.”

Duke said ticket sales will cover the costs of putting on the event and any extra goes to CanInspire, which helps people suffering from trauma, illness and loss.

Three community groups from the Ashburton District are among nine from Mid and South Canterbury who received a share of more than $30,000 in the latest round of donations from the Community Trust of Mid and South Canterbury.

The biggest winner was Hospice Mid Canterbury. The palliative care organisation received $8000 towards the cost of their volunteer co-ordinator. Mid Canterbury Cricket Association received $5000 for administration and management costs and the Mt Somers Staveley Playcentre, $2500 towards operational costs.

E-cigarettes to be legalised The sale of nicotine e-cigarettes will be legalised in New Zealand, the Government has confirmed.

Associate Health Minister Nicky Wagner said the change came despite the fact scientific evidence of the safety of e-cigarettes was still developing.

“There’s a general consensus that vaping is much less harmful than smoking,” Wagner said.

“The Government is taking a cautious approach by aligning the regulations around vaping with those for cigarettes.

“This ensures cigarette smokers have access to a lower-risk alternative while we continue to discourage people from smoking or vaping in the first place.”

The new rules for all e-cigarettes, whether they contain

nicotine or not, include restricting sales to people 18 years and over, banning vaping in indoor areas where smoking is currently prohibited, and restrictions on advertising.

The Government had already announced its intention to legalise e-cigarette sales and yesterday’s decision comes after a consultation period.

Currently, nicotine patches and gum can be bought, but nicotine e-cigarette liquid must be bought from overseas.

Users “vape” on an e-cigarette, inhaling its nicotine-containing vapour, in the way that smokers inhale the smoke of a tobacco cigarette, which contains nicotine plus many cancer-causing chemicals.

Rare whales detected A handful of rare whale species have been detected by scientists in the Cook Strait. Noises from Antarctic blue whales, Antarctic minke whales and several different beaked whale species, which are rarely seen due to their extensive diving behaviour, have been picked up by Niwa listening devices in the strait. The seven acoustic mooring locations picked up what are likely to be the first recordings of gray’s and strap-toothed beaked whales in New Zealand water.

Exclusion not always best answer, Ashburton College principal says A

s the local secondary school, Ashburton College has a legal requirement to enrol any students from our district.

We are happy to do so. However, our students are a reflection of our community.

We serve as a melting-pot for the children of our district, open to students of all backgrounds, and experiences which form their responses.

As a mid-decile school, we embrace all students and we celebrate this diversity.

As your local school, we guide students through the challenges of puberty and help them come to grips with the secondary school system, both of which are formidable hurdles for some!

The teenage years often feature a willingness to challenge systems and/or authority, and misguided behaviour such as bullying (with the latter certainly being made worse by social media). Bullying behaviours are an age-old global phenomena and many grandparents can regale us with their own misdeeds at a similar age.

Equally, incidents which escalate at college are often brought in from outside of college, or are a continuation of evening/weekend events.

To say a school has a ‘bullying culture’ can be incorrect. Ashburton College does not condone bullying. Rather, like all secondary schools, we are the recipients of the previous 12 or 13 years of each student’s experiences.

Lessening bullying and dangerous behaviours is a community responsibility.

We try very hard to guide all of our students through Year 9 and 10 towards senior school success, especially as NCEA Level 2 is fast being recognised as the minimum standard for vocational pathways. Most of our students cope with these challenges.

However, some struggle (many

An appropriate analogy is a comparison with a jury trial. A jury hears all the evidence and makes a considered decision. The public makes a snap judgement, often guided by brief news footage and gossip. Such judgements are often erroneous.

Ashburton College will continue to remain the logical choice for the teenagers of our district.

Childhood exposure to lead linked to lower IQ Childhood exposure to high levels of lead in New Zealand cities in the 1970s and 1980s has been linked to lower IQ and socio-economic status in adulthood.

The effects are “slight but significant”, says a paper published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Researchers used data from Otago University’s Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, which has been tracking 1000 people born in 1972 and 1973.

About half of the participants were lead-tested when they were 11.

Those with more than 10 micrograms of lead per decilitre of blood at that age had IQs at age 38 that were on average

4.25 points lower than their less lead-exposed peers.

They were also found to have lost IQ points relative to their own childhood scores.

The mean blood-lead level of the children at age 11 was 10.99mcg per decilitre.

Ninety-four per cent had levels greater than 5mcg per decilitre, at which the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends a publichealth intervention.

The paper’s senior author, Dunedin Study associate director Professor Terrie Moffitt, of Duke University in North Carolina, says the data came from an era when such high lead levels were viewed as normal.

When the Dunedin children were tested, only a level in ex-

cess of 35mcg per decilitre signalled a need for medical investigation.

“This research shows how farsighted New Zealand was when the country banned leaded petrol in 1996,” Prof Moffit said.

“Lead exposure is very rare in Kiwi children today. But the findings suggest the importance of keeping up our vigilance against other environmental pollutants.”

The researchers also compared changes in social standing using the New Zealand Socio-economic Index.

Children whose lead levels were over 10mcg per decilitre attained occupations with socio-economic status levels lower than those of their parents.

Fog grounds flights All flights in and out of Wellington Airport have been suspended due to sea fog.

More than a dozen arrivals and departures were delayed yesterday, including a 6.25am flight to Sydney which was delayed by more than two hours, according to the airport’s website.

However, some flights were able to leave when the weather cleared momentarily.

Air New Zealand issued a statement saying the fog was expected to clear mid afternoon and are hoping operations will resume as normal as soon as possible.

The fog rolled in on Tuesday night and disrupted arrivals from Australia, Fairfax reports.

Wellington police also issued a warning for motorists to take care in foggy and misty conditions.

A new tool to combat smoking Megan Gnad

W

ill the legalisation of Ecigarettes be the jackpot answer to help people quit smoking in New Zealand?

It was announced yesterday that in New Zealand, the Government would change the law to legalise the sale of nicotine e-cigarettes.

The new rules for all e-cigarettes and e-liquid products, whether they contain nicotine or not, include restricting sales to people 18 years and over, banning vaping in indoor areas where smoking is prohibited and restrictions on advertising.

Products will be legally sold at some point next year.

In England, e-cigarettes are the leading form of quit-smoking aid, used by 35 per cent of smokers trying to quit.

The popularity of vaping in the UK and Europe has had a massive impact on its culture and environments.

It’s not uncommon to see people up and down the streets vaping away in clouds of billowing white smoke and it has literally changed the face of the high street, with shops selling the products popping up out of nowhere.

In May, last year the UK introduced a range of new laws that means E-cigarettes are now subject to a whole new set of regulations.

This means advertising of vapes is now almost totally banned and any with a nicotine concentration above 20mg/ ml will need to be licensed as a medicine.

But, is moving in this direction the answer to helping New Zealanders quit the habit?

About 546,000 Kiwis smoke daily, and every day on average, at least 13 people die from a smoking-related disease.

Locally, we have amazing services right at our fingertips to give it up for good.

The Government has already set the target of making New Zealand Smokefree by 2025 and closer to home we have Te Ha-Waitaha/Stop Smoking Canterbury, made up of existing alliance and community cessation providers.

They offer quit coaches based across Canterbury you can visit face-to-face, or make contact via phone or text and a website to provide round the clock advice.

If you’re serious about quitting, there are many avenues you can take to meet your goal.

It might not work on the first try, but there’s plenty on offer to support the cause.

nce again, it has been raised that the issue of fly tipping in Mid Canterbury, could be down to the costs surrounding rubbish dumping.

Last week we ran a story where a variety of household waste, ranging from a refrigerator, to more than 100 empty aluminum cans was discovered at the Ashburton River.

The Ashburton District Council said it was an issue they receive reports on all too frequently.

The rubbish was removed quickly and if council can identify offenders, it will be followed up with prosecutions and fines.

A variety of options are available for people wishing to dispose of rubbish. For instance, it costs $8.50 for a trailer-load or car-load of rubbish, or for free if it is in council bags (which have already been paid for).

Is this reasonable? What needs to be done to educate people? Is there a harsh enough deterrent?

UK begins ‘momentus journey’ outside EU Britain has taken the first step on its “momentous journey” to a future outside the European Union when Theresa May launched divorce proceedings that will bring to an end a relationship of more than 40 years.

The Prime Minister has signed the letter that starts the formal exit process, and the historic document will be hand-delivered by a senior diplomat to EU chiefs tomorrow. It will mark the start of complex and contentious negotiations that put the UK on course to break its ties with Brussels by the end of March, 2019.

Mrs May will urge the country to “come together” as she looks to the heal the deep wounds caused by a referendum campaign that left the UK mired in division.

The PM’s top team gathered around the Cabinet table at No 10 as she updated them on the content of the letter formally invoking Article 50. She then informed MPs that Brexit was being triggered and in Brussels, British ambassador to the EU Sir Tim Barrow was to deliver the document to European Council president Donald Tusk.

Once it has been accepted, Article 50 has been officially launched.

The PM will tell the Commons she will represent “every person in the UK”, including EU nationals, when she takes to the negotiating table.

“It is my fierce determination to get the right deal for every single person in this country,” she will say.

Key EU figures agreed to enter into Brexit talks in a “positive spirit” during a series of telephone calls with Mrs May on Tuesday evening.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Mr Tusk and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said the UK would remain a “close and committed ally”.

Within 48 hours, the European Commission is expected to issue “draft negotiation guidelines”, which will be sent to the 27 remaining states for consultation.

Their leaders will meet on April 29 at an

extraordinary European Council summit to agree a mandate for chief negotiator Michel Barnier and clear the way for talks to begin in earnest in May. The key point of contention as soon as Article 50 is triggered is the order in which different aspects of Brexit are approached.

Effectively, there are two issues to be settled – the terms of Britain’s withdrawal from the EU and arrangements for future trade relations.

On top of that is a possible third negotiation on a “transitional arrangement” covering the period between the moment of departure and new trade rules taking effect.

Arrested over ‘Human waste’ found dancer’s death in Coca-Cola cans A man has been arrested as part of an investigation into the death of a British woman who worked at a Melbourne strip club, but police are yet to reveal how she died.

Stacey Tierney, 29, a fitness instructor from Manchester, was found dead in mysterious circumstances in the Dreams Gentlemen’s Club on December 19.

She worked at the club as a table-top dancer.

Victoria Police arrested a 33-year-old Ascot Vale man on Tuesday and interviewed him on suspicion of perjury.

He was released pending summons.

Police would not reveal if they had a cause of death for Ms Tierney, or how the coroner’s investigation had progressed.

Ms Tierney had been partying at the closed club with several men on December 18 last year, with the men reportedly leaving the club before her body was discovered the next day.

The strip club has increasingly come under fire from exotic dancers who knew Ms Tierney – many of whom were surprised the club was open for “Sexy Poker Tuesdays” the day after she was found dead.

Her supporters criticised the club’s actions after her death, and said the club was deleting people’s comments from its Facebook page.

The club released a statement in January offering its condolences.

Police are investigating after suspected human waste was found in a number of empty cans at a Coca-Cola factory in Northern Ireland.

Night shift workers at the Lisburn plant made the shock discovery inside a number of cans on the production line, the Belfast Telegraph reported.

“It was absolutely horrible, and the machines had to be turned off for about 15 hours to be cleaned,” a source told the paper.

“It was unusual because normally the cans come from somewhere else in the UK, but this time they apparently came from Germany.

“The rumour is that some poor immigrants could have made that long journey in the lorry and that in their desperation were forced to use the cans instead of a toilet.”

Coca-Cola said the issue was identified “immediately” and that it had no impact on its products on sale.

In a statement, the company said: “Coca-Cola takes the safety and quality of our products extremely seriously.

“We are aware of an incident involving empty cans at our plant in Knockmore Hill, Lisburn. We are treating this matter extremely seriously and are

In brief Trump ‘immune’ US President Donald Trump’s lawyers say he’s immune, while in the top job, from defamation claims brought by a former contestant on his reality television show The Apprentice. The lawyers said in a New York state Supreme Court filing yesterday they will formally ask for dismissal of the January claims by Summer Zervos. They say the constitution immunises Trump from being sued in state court while president.

Zervos was a contestant on Trump’s reality show in 2006.

She sued after claiming at a news conference Trump made unwanted sexual contact with her at a Beverly Hills hotel in 2007.

300 evacuated A powerful cyclone has lashed Australia’s Airlie Beach, damaging roofs and cutting power.

Devastating Debbie Two cars have been found submerged in floodwaters in cyclonehit north Queensland, sparking a search for the drivers and possible passengers.

At least one of the cars went under on the Bruce Highway near Proserpine and was found with its windows down yesterday.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said officers were retracing the steps of the cars’ owners to find out if they were safe.

“We’re working backwards in terms of looking for the drivers or the occupants of those vehicles,” Mr Stewart said in Bowen yesterday.

“Since early this morning we have been searching back through our records to look at the phone calls and to find out who the owners were and if they’re currently safe.”

The search comes as emergency crews work to rescue three people stranded on the roof of another car submerged in floodwater on Rifle Range Road in Sarina.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has flown to Bowen alongside Mr Stewart and Brigadier Chris Field, who will lead efforts to help devastated home and business owners, as well as the battered tourism and agricultural sectors.

Flooding stranded residents of north Queensland communities already battered by Cyclone Debbie, with main roads in and out of Airlie Beach, Bowen and Proserpine cut off.

The Bruce Highway is also cut off both north and south of Mackay.

Motorists leaving Airlie Beach yesterday came to an abrupt halt on Shute Harbour Rd. The Proserpine River spilled over during Cyclone Debbie, all but swallowing road traffic signs and a railway crossing.

“There’s been some really phenomenal rainfall totals in the last few days,” the Bureau of Meteorology’s hydrology manager Victoria Dodds said.

“In the Pioneer Basin that drains down to Mackay, there’s been over a 1000mm of rain in 48 hours.”

The area would typically get 1500-2000mm throughout the year.

But, at Daydream Island, water is in demand after town supplies were interrupted by Debbie’s destruction.

Bottled water is now being handed out to guests and it’s understood military assistance has been requested to transport people off the island.

The wild weather is expected to make its way further towards the southeast corner of the state as the week progresses, with heavy rainfalls expected to hit this evening.

But for those who have already endured the wrath of the ex-tropical cyclone, there’s a long clean up ahead.

Shell-shocked motel owner Dave McInerney, who spent most of Tuesday as Debbie hit huddled in a toilet with his caretaker and

dog Spotty, says he’ll likely walk away from his Shute Harbour Motel.

The business his father started 50 years ago is in ruins, and he believes what’s left is likely to be demolished.

“I think I’ll probably pack up and go now, that’s enough,” he said.

“I’ve worked in the Gulf of Carpentaria and seen some pretty bad storms but this one took the cake.”

Before heading north, the premier urged people to stay off the roads as defence personnel and other emergency teams move in to assess structural damage and deliver supplies.

She warned some people could be without power for up to a week.

Yesterday morning, 63,000 households were going without.

There could also be “huge” economic impacts for farmers in the cyclone zone and of a body blow to tourism, with Debbie inflicting significant damage to Whitsunday Island resorts.

A man is in a critical condition with serious burns to his face after a Melbourne apartment block fire led to the evacuation of 300 people.

The man was burned on his face, arms and back and paramedics transported him to The Alfred hospital, paramedics say. The fire brigade suspects a mattress was set alight in a corridor on the sixth floor of a housing commission tower on Napier Street in Fitzroy about 5am yesterday. The fire was deemed suspicious and police were investigating.

Half a car found A stolen car has been found on fire in country Victoria but that’s only half the story. Police are scratching their heads after finding only the front half of the stolen BMW X5 on fire near bushland in Gisborne yesterday. Investigators say the sedan had been cut in half and want the public’s help to find the back end.

Cinema destroyed Fire has destroyed Adelaide’s last remaining drive-in cinema, after someone used a car to break into the property and steal an ATM. The main building at the Mainline Drive-In at Gepps Cross went up in flames at about 1.30am yesterday and authorities say the suspicious blaze has caused at least $400,000 in damage. An ATM was stolen from the cinema and about an hour later it was found in the tray of a stolen ute that was found burning in Ottoway.

Top angus bloodlines on show in Canterbury

The 2017 Angus Ward Conference will begin on Sunday and the itinerary is packed with stud visits and technical sessions.

For the first time in a decade the event will be hosted by the Canterbury-Westland ward.

Up to 100 breeders are expected to attend the five-day conference, primarily North Island stud breeders, along with a couple of Australian breeders joining the party.

The group will visit 16 studs as well as research farms during the conference, but will also take time out for a soak in the Hanmer Springs hotpools and a jet boat trip up the Waimakariri River.

Rangiora breeder Helen Heddell said interest in the angus breed continued to grow, spurred by the dairy farmers choosing to run angus bulls with the herd at the tail end of the artificial breeding season.

Combined with healthy beef schedules and strong demand for export heifers from Mongolia and China, the breed delivers a number of options for farmers, Heddell said.

The AngusPure brand, rolled out in 2013 to offer premiums for meat carcasses which met an established set of criteria, was also

paying off.

McDonalds restaurants have also played a part by promoting angus beef of its menu.

End of an era for competition The end of an era will be marked at the Lincoln University Foundation’s South Island Farmer of the Year winner’s field day on April 3. It will be the last such field day in the more than 30-year history of the competition.

Registrations are rolling in from throughout New Zealand for the day at the Fairlie property of winners Lyn and Neil Campbell, with participants keen not only to get information on the unique success story of the Campbells’ farm business, but also wanting to mark the occasion as the competition comes to an end.

Lincoln University Foundation chairman Ben Todhunter said that after 30 years of recognising the highest achievers in the South Island’s farming community, the foundation decided to call time on the South Island Farmer of the Year competition in order to shift its resources to increasing scholarship opportunities for young farmers and other agriculturalists to study at Lincoln University.

“The foundation is moving from identifying farming excellence to creating farming excellence,” Todhunter said.

“The competition has been a wonderful medium to promote farming excellence and we are very proud of what it has achieved. But the foundation now wants to focus more on the scholarship side of our programme to achieve our purpose of growing excellence in New Zealand’s primary industries.

“We believe the most gain will be through increasing the number of young people who can enter university to study agriculture and bring that knowledge into New Zealand’s primary industries.”

$10.6m after-tax profit for Synlait Synlait Milk has announced an after-tax profit of $10.6 million for the first half of the financial year. It compares with a profit of $12.3m for the same period last year, with the company saying investment in people and business development accounted for the decline in earnings.

Momentum grows to replace RMA

BY PATTRICK SMELLIE A major new report from the Productivity Commission lays the foundation for action on the growing political consensus that the Resource Management Act and associated laws are failing both cities and the natural environment and need a complete rewrite.

Published yesterday morning, the final Better Urban Planning report is the culmination of eight years of investigations ordered by the Government into the causes of unaffordable housing and urban planning.

While the report does not specifically recommend repeal of the 27-year-old RMA, a statement welcoming its publication from Finance Minister Steven Joyce identified “replacing the Resource Management Act and other statutes with a single new planning law that governs both the built and natural environment”.

The report comes as Environment Minister Nick Smith shepherds a long-stalled and increasingly controversial set of changes to the RMA through Parliament, with the Government forced to

make highly specific ‘carve-out’ deals with the Maori Party to achieve a watered-down version of reforms it has been seeking since its first term in office, in 2008.

The Labour and Green parties are also both increasingly convinced the RMA needs a full review, with the commission report also recommending reform of the Local Government and Land Transport Acts.

The Environmental Defence Society welcomed the report and called for a royal commission of inquiry into major reforms, which it said needed to be depoliticised.

The report says the current urban planning system is characterised by “increasing legislative complexity, declining coherence and accessibility”, following extensive and regular reform to the RMA since it was first passed in 1990.

While the report does not specifically recommend repealing the RMA, Productivity Commission chairman Murray Sherwin said that its terms of reference only sought “to outline what a new regime would be like if you were starting with a blank sheet of pa-

The RMA and associated laws had “lost its shape, leaving ministers contemplating whether a complete rewrite is justified”.

Among its recommendations are allowing local councils to fund infrastructure development through congestion charging and to target rates at areas where land

prices were rising especially swiftly.

This “value capture” approach to rating would let local government capture some of the value uplift enjoyed for property owners, often caused by investments in local government infrastructure such as roading and public transport.

However, it says other new forms of local tax, such as a regional fuel tax to fund infrastructure, are unnecessary and that local governments already have a range of tools available to raise more funds. It’s just that many are making comparatively little use of them.

It also endorses the approach under the current government of increasing national direction by central government on major issues involving both urban planning and natural environmental standards.

A routine criticism of the RMA’s implementation has been that local councils have too often received inadequate guidance from central government through National Policy Statements, which the RMA has always provided for, but whose use has only recently

started to become common.

The report also finds the current system has blurred the distinction between urban and natural environments.

“The natural environment needs a clear focus on setting standards that must be met, while the built environment requires assessments that recognise the benefits of urban development and allow change,” it says.

“A future planning system should clearly distinguish between the natural and built environments and clearly outline how to manage the inter-relationships between the two.”

The report also goes into some depth on how councils should think about the affordability of their infrastructure plans, revealing in the process that weighing the social, environmental and economic pay-off of infrastructure development against its cost is poorly understood.

While reforming such a complex area of law “might appear daunting”, the commission concludes “the potential gains far outweigh the costs of not confronting the current weaknesses”.

Targeted rates may head Auckland’s way Housing developments north of Auckland could soon be charged higher “targeted rates” to help fund infrastructure.

The Government is working with Auckland Council to see if such targeting of rates can be done under the existing law.

Finance Minister Steven Joyce said the council had said it could not afford the trunk infrastructure – such as main pipes and roads – to connect a large area of land that had been marked for housing growth over the next 20 years.

“It’s out the back of Orewa and those sorts of places,” Joyce told Radio New Zealand.

“The idea would be you would get a targeted rate across that land up there and that would be an income stream that would pay the cost of some of that infrastructure.”

Asked if a law change would be needed for such targeted charging, Joyce said that was being worked through.

“It is actually quite a tricky area of current law but we are trying to find a way of doing it because it is something the Auckland Council is very interested in.”

Joyce made his comments after the Productivity Commission yesterday morning released its report on how to improve urban planning.

The Government-commissioned report made 64 recommendations, including making greater use of targeted rates and other ways to fund infrastructure.

Auckland Council’s debt to revenue currently sits at about 256 per cent, near the debt ceiling of 265 per cent.

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff has warned that a credit downgrade would reduce investor confidence in Auckland Council, drive up the cost of borrowing and reduce the council’s ability to secure longer duration debt.

The Government has not been supportive of other targeted measures to help fund Auckland’s

growth, including Goff’s proposed “pillow tax” on hotels and other accommodation providers and a regional fuel tax.

Goff wants to raise $27.8 million to fund tourism and events promotion, but it is doubtful he has the numbers to pass the rate, which is vehemently opposed by the hotel and hospitality industries.

Meanwhile, bids for a slice of the Government’s $1 billion housing infrastructure fund close this week.

The fund, set up by the Government in July last year, offered five councils low interest debt to fund such things as water and roading for new housing.

The eligible recipients are Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga, Christchurch and Queenstown Lakes councils.

Hamilton has applied for $240m of the $1b fund to fasttrack infrastructure for 2350 to 3100 homes in Peacocke and Rotokauri.

Age Concern Ashburton Age Concern is pleased to offer a Confident Driving Course with Yvonne Palmer on Friday May 19 at the Senior Centre, 206 Cameron Street. North, dealer, will open 1 Heart, South shows his Spades, knowing that they have a Heart fit, and gets a jump support to 3 Spades. A double fit, Excellent! Ashburton Horticultural Society President Joy Jaine welcomed members to our March meeting, with a fairly good turnout despite the wet evening. There was a good discussion regarding the recently held Garden Competition with several suggestions being received as to how we may encourage more local gardeners to enter and how the event may be better advertised. Speaker for the evening was Rosemary Case who gave a presentation on last year’s Chelsea Flower Show and also RHS Garden at Wisley in Surrey.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club The March meeting for Ashburton Pakeke Lions club was held at Aeroview.

After the rather cold introduction to an early winter type day it was a pleasure to walk into the welcoming atmosphere with the log fire burning.

Over 60 members and partners were in attendance along with Michael Shearer, President of the Ashburton Lions Club who congratulated Pakeke for the excellent bulletin that is distributed monthly. No clip boards to circulate indicated a quieter month of service to the community.

Lion Ron sought volunteers to assist an elderly person with the dismantling of an obsolete fish pond. A decision has been made by the Board to purchase high vis jackets, identified with logo and club name for every member.

These jackets to be worn on all appropriate occasions when safety could be an issue and enabling members to be easily identified.

Following a meal provided by All Fed Up caterers and much chatter amongst members. Tail Twister Lion Ron with his unique style was able to solicit a number fines. It is not a good idea to have your photo in a local paper or be a successful veteran golfer.

Entertainment for the evening was provided by local museum collector of many things, Pete MacQuarters who screened an extremely interesting film of the life of Henry Ford, and in particular the Model T. Ladies Craft morning 10am, April 10 at Ina Diver’s home, 60 Kelvin Crescent.

After three consecutive weeks of rain which has resulted in the

cancellation of play, some decent weather on Tuesday night was welcomed by organisers, players, coaches and supporters with more than 800 people turning up to take part in the schools’ competition.

Seventy-eight teams are en-

tered in this year’s competition which sees children playing each week to enhance their rugby skills and foster future talents.

Mid Canterbury senior representatives, Angus Lindsay and Jackson Donlan (above right), were on hand to assist some

teams with a pre-match warmup.

Due to the cancellations over recent weeks the tournament has been extended to run for an extra week to ensure everyone gets enough time on the paddock.

From next week the Ashburton Guardian will launch a new section in its sport pages.

Two pages during the middle of the week will be designated to youth sport, covering off all achievements from the young stars of the district in one easy-to-find place each week.

To make it exactly what you, the reader, wants to see, we want it to be driven by you.

CLUB NEWS Ashburton U3A Club News The diverse area of O Tu Wharekai wetlands was the subject of the first presentation in current mini-series offered to members and guests. Wetland ranger Juzah Zammit-Ross was welcomed by Edith Smith. Covering the area of Ashburton lakes and Upper Rangitata River, it is one of the three areas covered by Arawai Kakariki as being of national importance, the other two being Whangamarino (Waikato) and Ararua/Waituna (Southland).

Covering an area of 60,000 hectares, the Hakatere Conservation Park was opened in 2007 with its aims and objectives to preserve/protect/promote and improve the area through public education and monitoring of predators (human and feral) to protect wildlife and threatened plants found in the area.

Wrybills who create their nests by collecting pebbles, only nest in the braided rivers between September and January and are notable for their right curved beaks, evolved through their feeding habit in the rivers. Their nests are monitored and chicks are banded when they are old enough.

Eight species of scree lizards have been identified and the assistance of a ‘lizard’ dog specially trained to find the lizards has proved invaluable to the monitoring programme. Each trapped lizard is weighed and marked before being released with some growing to 26cms in length however in years of severe flooding the numbers have been severely affected.

New Zealand’s endemic plant Craspedia ‘heron’ is only found at Cameron’s Fan in O Tu Wharekai. Monitored since 2008, the plants have shown consistency. But the health of the area can only be achieved by controlling the continual threat to its biodiversity by exotic mammalian and plant species with didymo being an ongoing problem. Of the 1,215 kill traps and 400 legholders along the 35kms of actual river under control, the greatest number of predators caught

over a two year period were hedgehogs with a surprising 1754 trapped compared with mice (47), cats (197) and possums (110).

Our beautiful backyard offers a wealth of recreational opportunities to be enjoyed by all.

Dave Busby demonstrated turning a natural edged bowl, showing us how to find the centre, balance and holding technique, so that it would be even on all sides. After getting the outside into shape he reversed chucked it then hollowed the centre. Finally using a vacuum chuck he cleaned up the base.

Coronation Target Shooting Club Numbers at the second training day were down a little with a lot of sickness about. Some new games were trialled and everyone there had an enjoyable day. Results were up on the second practice night for senior members with Michaela Smith and T.J. Stewart missing out on the first possible of the season to that mean little marking gauge. Plains Ladies Friendship Club Wilma welcomed 73 members to the Annual General Meeting. Allison read the minutes of the last monthly meeting and Natalie gave the Treasurers report, members were reminded that subs are due. The movie on April 5 at 11am at the Regent Theatre is two choices “United Kingdom or “Loving”. Both are recommended for good viewing. Minutes from the last Annual Meeting were read then Wilma presented her Annual Report followed by the financial report. Both were pasted and seconded. Audrey Lowe took the chair for the election of officers. There was a lot of discussion on the changing of the Probus name and after a vote from members the group will be called “Plains Ladies Friendship Club.”

Our new President is Vera Smollett, Secretary Allison Doig, Treasurer to be appointed. Committee Wilma Breading, Nancy Costing, Sue Jackson. Isla Jones,

Val Dellow and new members Valma Mitchell, Anne Marsden and Shirley Patterson. Wilma presented posies to Deb Ellery, and Natalie Quantock retiring from committee. Also one for Joan Prendergast who was not able to be present.

After morning tea Winsome Wear was the speaker and told us about starting to make jewellery. They are made from all different sorts of beads and makes many varied types of necklaces, long, short ones and book marks etc. She enjoys meeting different people while selling at markets etc. Wilma thanked Winsome. The raffle was drawn. The meeting closed at 11.15 am. Next meeting is on April 24.

RSA Women’s Section President Colleen Hands welcomed members on Thursday March 23. A minutes silence was held for one deceased member. Apologies were accepted.

Hope McIntosh played the piano while we sang the RSA song. No birthdays this month. Sympathy was extended to anyone who has sadly lost a loved one.

Sick members were wished a speedy recovery. The RSA will hold a car boot sale on Saturday April 8. Members asked if they could supply priced goods for a cake stall. Poppy Day will be on Friday April 11. Names of sellers taken today.

In brief Win sparks baby boom Iceland has reportedly experienced a baby boom, nine months after the nation’s most famous football victory. Local newspaper Visir reports a record-breaking amount of births in Iceland over the past weekend, nine months after Iceland beat England 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the European Championships in France.

According to Visir the weekend of March 25-26 saw the highest-ever amount of epidurals administered to patients in Icelandic hospitals.

Iceland has a population of around 323,000, smaller than Christchurch.

Shooting for national glory Ashburton College is readying its Senior Girls 3X3 Basketball team again for a shot at national glory.

The team is aiming towards the Basketball New Zealand National 3x3 Championship in Tauranga starting today. More than 60 teams from around the country will battle it out over three days.

Eight hours of basketball on 10 hoops each day will be accompanied by a carnival atmosphere with hip-hop and R’n’B hits blasting to help energise

the players and their supporters.

This year sees the junior girls’ team of the past two years step up to play against the big kids in the senior girls’ grade.

Ashburton College’s growing reputation means it is no longer able to sneak under the radar, as previous results have the team seeded 6th.

With competition coming from powerhouse basketball colleges, St Peter’s of Cambridge and Rangitoto College, a top four pool result would get the

girls a play-off spot in the crossover stage.

“What the girls lack in size is definitely made up for with speed, determination and basketball IQs,” Mark Douglas, team coach, said.

“These girls are fast and smart and all play themselves to a stand-still when competing so we can’t wait to see how they go against the best New Zealand has to offer.

“All the girls shoot the ball very well and whichever three are on the court at any time,

they have the ability to attack the opposition.”

Along with a couple of additional players, the girls split into two teams and spent Monday playing in Timaru at the inaugural 3x3 tournament, also playing in the boys’ division.

Apart from losing to the Ashburton boys’ team they were unbeaten against the remaining boys’ teams.

“It was a good blow-out, a great confidence booster, and now everyone is ready to play on the big stage,” Douglas said.

The Washington Nationals say US President Donald Trump has declined an invitation to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before their game on opening day. A spokeswoman for the baseball team said the White House said Trump would not be at next week’s game at Nationals Park against the Miami Marlins because of a scheduling conflict.

President Barack Obama threw the ceremonial first pitch at the Nationals’ opener in 2010, marking the 100th anniversary of a presidential pitch to start the season. William Howard Taft first did it on April 14, 1910.

Fight ‘the only option’ When Maria Sharapova realised her tennis career could be ended by what she claims was an accidental doping violation, the former world No. 1 decided she had to fight.

College rowers through to semis

Ashburton College rowers continued their top form at the Maadi Cup at Lake Karapiro yesterday, with several of the squad advancing to A semi-finals.

Among them was golden girl Veronica Wall, who was the only one in her under-17 girls’ single sculls to go under 8 minutes.

Wall clocked 7.53.29, her closest rival across the four quarter-finals finishing in 8.20.

Harrison Davies and Haxby Hefford both qualified for the semi-finals of their under-17 boys’ single sculls, while Mollie Gibson also advanced to the semis in the under-16 girls with a second placing in her quarter-final.

Davies and Hefford had a busy day, teaming up in the boys’ under-17 doubles to finish third in their quarter-final.

Olivia Gibson and Bobbie Rushton were third in their under-18 novice girls’ quarter-finals, while Lara Biggs, Mollie Gibson, Emma Stagg, Katie Dolan and cox Emma Jansen combined in the quad for a second place in their quarter-final.

Davies raced up an age-group in the under-18 singles, his fourth place in one of the quarter-finals securing him a spot in the semis.

Mollie Gibson and Emma Stagg progressed to the under-16 doubles semis.

Mollie Gibson will be in action in her singles semi at 9.50am followed by novice double scullers Wyatt Burrows and Artem Kravchenko.

The girls under-16 coxed quad will be on the water at 12.10pm in their semi.

Events will be livestreamed from Lake Karapiro today, tomorrow and Saturday as the six-day event gets to the business end of the competition.

The event is the biggest Maadi Cup on record with 127 schools sending around 2100 rowers. The

last events on the water will be the under-18 boys’ coxed eight A final for the Maadi Cup; 2016 cup-winners Christ’s College already have a crew through to the final.

The qualifying races so far have involved some spectacular racing.

After a blistering row down the course in the first heat, Hamilton

Boys’ High, Saint Kentigern College and Sacred Heart College (Auckland) were all locked bowball to bowball in the final 250 metres.

A powerful finishing charge from Hamilton Boys proved too strong for Saint Kentigern close behind in second place forcing Sacred Heart College and the remaining crews into a repechage.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE REPORTS Chertsey-Pendarves President Janice Allen welcomed members to a pot-luck lunch in conjunction with the 86th Annual meeting recently held at 3 Filey Place.

Election of Officers took place after the reading and adoption of the Annual report and Financial Statement.

Fairton Fairton WI March meeting was held at Joyce Giller’s home. Two apologies were received. We now have ten members after Mrs Yvonne Lister was welcomed to our group. It was smiles all round.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed as was the finance. Correspondence from Mid Canterbury Federation was all read and discussed. The Annual meeting was then held, the Annual Report being read by Adrianne Frost who was then thanked for this. The Financial report was read by Joyce and approved. Mrs Val Farr is our new President for 2017. A natter and catch-up brought the meeting to an end.

Hinds In the absence of Rosa Bennett, Valmai McKenzie, Vice President welcomed 10 members to the Annual meeting of the Hinds WI held in the Davison Room of Hinds Community Centre. A number of apologies were received. Following the Aspirations, motions of sympathy were extended.

Two meeting reports were read, de-briefing of Founders Day carried out and the financial statement was delivered. Birthday greetings were extended to Val Goodridge, Lorraine Baughan and Shirley Millar and a gift offered from the box.

Shirley was also winner of the monthly raffle.

The meeting agreed to continue to support their adopted cause, i.e. St John Shuttle, then discussion on catering arrangements for the Anzac Day service at the Hinds Community Centre, 2016 saw over 200 people attend the service.

Some 14 posy bowls were delivered to Ward Six recently by members.

The 86th Annual meeting was then held. Rosa’s presidential report was read as was the Secretarial one by Betty, both were detailed and interesting.

Also noted during the year, a lot of badges were sewn onto Scout blankets for a local family who had suffered bereavement.

Following Ruth’s Financial Statement of accounts, elections took place - President, Betty Wilson; Secretary, Jo Wilson, and Treasurer, Ruth Sheppard. Other executive and minor duties were also filled in with little difficulty. Competition results were read out. Winners as follows: Flowers, Douglas Vase.

The agenda was discussed and two delegates chosen. The competitions for the month resulted in Barbara Burst winning both the Moylan and the Northchurch trophies.

Member Valmai Mitchell gave us a very entertaining account of the visit she and husband Ray made to visit their daughter and family in Scotland.

The 53rd Annual Meeting of Netherby WI followed. The election of Officers resulted in Pauline Palmer being re-elected as President as was

Adrienne Hodson as secretary.

Committee elected were Diane Bradley, Joan Campbell, Denise Clark, Barbara Danielson, Joan Henderson, Patsy Huggins and Wendy Petrie.

Retiring Treasurer Valmai Mitchell and committee member Daphne Sheehan were thanked by Pauline and presented with bouquets of flowers.

The presentation of prizes for the year completed the meeting with Molly Amos winning the floral section, Nancy Christie the cooking and Barbara Burst the craft. The Jean Turton Trophy for most points was presented to Molly Amos.

Rakaia The Rakaia WI began their year with the first meeting being held on 16th February. President Heather welcomed seven members, and received two apologies.

Our Motto for this month was: “May we give without remembering and receive without forgetting.”

The Roll-call was: A hint for packing suitcases, and what did you leave behind last time?

Members have assisted with Meals On Wheels in Ashburton recently. A donation was made to the Rakaia Fishing Association for items received, which Rakaia WI will give to the National AGM for gift bags.

A large collection of gifts for children for Christmas had been donated to Birthright.

Programmes for the coming year were distributed; we look forward to many more happy times, and warmly welcome new members to join with us.

They have trained instructors and a regular long-term group of volunteers.

In brief Rock On settles well Last-start stakes winner Rock On has settled in well at John Sargent’s stable ahead of his Australian debut in Saturday’s Gr.2 Chairman’s Handicap at Randwick.

His trip to Sydney was confirmed by his victory in the Listed New Zealand St Leger at Trentham a fortnight ago. “John rang me on Tuesday and the horse travelled over well,” trainer Gary Vile said.

“There wasn’t much else for him here, apart from the Hawke’s Bay Cup, and we wanted to give him a trip away. He’ll only have the one run there.” The dream long-term goal for Rock On is the Melbourne spring carnival.

Outlook brighter

Hard Merchandize has ticked all the boxes on his trainer’s list ahead of his big test at the weekend.

“I’m really happy with him,” trainer Gary Vile said. “He’s done well since he last raced, his work has been great, the 1400 metres will suit him and he likes a wet track.”

Hard Merchandize was a debut winner at Otaki in November before a break and he resumed with a third placing at Trentham a fortnight ago.

“I thought he ran really well.

He was caught wide and he’d only had an 800 metre trial so he was always going to be a bit vulnerable,” Vile said.

“He learned a bit more as well so I thought, all in all, he was pretty good.”

Role in the Gr.3 Higgins Concrete Manawatu Classic with Vile desperate for a change in the threeyear-old’s fortunes.

“He just needs some luck, he’s been carved up both times he went to Ellerslie,” he said. “He just needs a break in the running.”

He was referring to Leading Role’s unplaced runs in the Gr.2 Avondale Guineas and in the Gr.1 New Zealand Derby.

India, Australia divided

India captain Virat Kohli has laid bare the bitter divide between his team and Australia, declaring he will never be friends with any member of the opposition involved in an incredibly heated four-Test series. The contrast between Kohli and Australia skipper Steve Smith could hardly be sharper following India’s eight-wicket win in the series decider. Smith offered an apology for letting his “emotions, actions falter a little bit throughout this series”, adding the tourists were outplayed by the top-ranked Test side in Dharamsala. Kohli paid tribute to Australia’s “relentlessness” and skill, but was scathing of their character.

Allenton senior cricket captain, Jeff Naish, led his side to a dominating season of Mid Canterbury cricket.

Allenton dominates

The name Allenton features prominently on the list of winners from Mid Canterbury Cricket’s annual Awards and Prizegiving night last week.

A stellar season on the grounds around the region has seen the club dominate a large portion of Mid Canterbury cricket this season including a close to clean sweep in the senior competition with only the Bevan Stroud Memorial eluding them in terms of silverware.

They were on stage to collect the T20 Trophy, the Pritchard Shield, the Muirhead Rosebowl

and the Studholme Shield while they also took home the J R Mousey Fielding Trophy as well.

Allenton skipper, Jeff Naish picked up the A.C.C.A wicketkeeping trophy while Lyall Jemmett picked up the best bowling performance award.

It was Coldstream’s Ben Crequer however who took out batting honours for the season.

The opening bat took home The Supporters Club Trophy for the highest batting aggregate and also the G Murray Memorial for the highest batting average in senior cricket.

Methven opening bowler, Ash Mills was awarded the Ken But-

ler Memorial for the most wickets taken during the season.

Representative Awards were also dished out on the night.

Lachie Jemmett was named Year 5 and 6 player of the year, Devon Flannery claimed the Year 7 title and Angus Jemmett picked up player of the tournament at the South Island Primary Schools Tournament and was also named Primary player of the year.

Thom Graham took home the Under 15 player of the year while Richard Turpie, who was this year named in the Willows Squad to travel to Sri Lanka, picked up the Under 17 player

of the year award and also the Gary Ashworth Memorial for the overall junior player of the year.

James Southy was named the Ivan Griffiths Memorial winner which is awarded to the overall Senior representative player of the year.

In the Junior Club Awards, Allenton took home the title in 4th Grade, both pre and postChristmas, fifth grade postChristmas, and Allenton Gold won 6th Grade post-Christmas.

Coldstream McCullum took home 6th Grade pre-Christmas and Coldstream Williamson claimed 5th grade pre-Christmas.
