Nine Ashburton District Councillors and mayor Donna Favel have cleared the way for a new civic centre and library to be built on land in Baring Square east. The site was the number one choice for consultants Opus Architecture and survived two rounds of public consulta-
tion. Originally it would have required the demolition of the earthquake damaged Methodist Church but the final deal involves only two lots owned by the church and not the church itself. While final reports and costings were available last year, a final site decision was held off for the new team of councillors elected in October. Rather than make a decision when
the project came up for sign-off in February, however, the majority wanted to revisit a two-site option. This involved delays and a closed doors workshop where all options were explored and costs were examined.
