Mid Canterbury charities are dealing with increasing numbers lining up for assistance with balancing the budget, power bills and food. And the delayed start for workers at Silver Fern Farms Fairton plant is now compounding the pressure. Last week the company announced
its decision to take the district’s bobby calf kill to its Pareora plant for the second season running, pushing back the start date for about 250 workers by three months. Presbyterian Support Services manager Jackie Girvan said the Ashburton Budget Advice Service, which operates under the auspices of the charity, is dealing with an increasing number of clients
turning up with big power bills. “Some will be around the $300 to $400 mark, but others can get up to $1500 to $3000,” she said. “Usually there are children involved and the power has already been cut off.”
