Storm troopers will be ready and avalauncher rockets engaged as a snowstorm approaches Mt Hutt tonight.

The group of skifield staff will sleep over on the ski area, but they won’t do much sleeping as they track every nuance of the weather event and aim to get Mt Hutt open

again tomorrow.

“Wednesday will be the one to watch, it could be a great day, it just depends on (snow) totals. If totals aren’t too much then we will be able to get into it pretty quickly,” ski area manager James McKenzie said.

And at this stage it looked like it wouldn’t be “too much” snow, with the latest MetService forecast is-

sued after 11am yesterday predicting 15 to 20 centimetres.

Anything over 25 centimetres presented more logistical challenges in terms of avalanche control and clearing the access road, McKenzie said. It would come with brisk southerlies though, most likely creating drifts.

watchers and yesterday he was keeping an eye on five different prediction models as he sized up the snowstorm.

Exact precipitation and temperature levels in such events can mean the difference between being able to open the skifield the next day, or closing and disappointing thousands of skiers.

Farmer Keith retires at 93

“Never be the first to try the new, nor the last to cast the old aside.”

That is a saying Seafield farmer Keith Grice has lived by throughout a successful career, one that has spanned generations.

Finally at the age of 93 he is retiring, and now has time to reminisce upon the many years gone by.

After sheep farming on dryland throughout his whole life, earlier this month, on July 10, he sent away his stock.

As the last of the about 1000 sheep were on their way to the Temuka saleyards, Grice carved a lonely figure as helpers went off to breakfast.

“I stayed in the yard when the last truck went, I unashamedly say this, tears rolled down my cheeks,” he said.

But just like that saying goes, he is not set on being the last to cast sheep farming aside, and realises that time must move on.

His son Robert has now taken over the property, and it is being converted to crop.

Sheep farming is just not what it used to be, he said, and there has been so many changes over the years.

As an example, he said he bought a 72-hectare block on Seafield and Hamptons Road about 50 years ago for $63,000, and about five months ago sold this for $3.4 million.

“So how can anybody farm sheep on land that dear?” he asked.

And then there was the example of the slide in wool prices.

After crutching 1100 ewes recently, he was only able to recoup $400 of the $3000 cost from the wool sold.

“One time, crutching would pay for the contractor.”

Grice grew up on the family farm, his dad Robert having come to the property in 1906.

He had to leave Ashburton High School at the age of about 16 to help when his father became unwell.

Grice met wife Betty at a dance at the Radiant Hall, and the couple have now been married for 64 years. Both he and Bevan decided to split the property and farm independently after their respective children were starting to grow up.

Grice said there had been good and bad times over the years, but he had been fortunate in that he had not been affected by the 1980s recession as he had never had any debt.

And when it came to droughts, he just got through them by making plenty of lucerne hay each year, and buying in feed when he needed it.

“Some years you could see a mouse run across the paddock.”

He and Betty had their farm homestead built about 50 years ago, and they have no intentions of leaving. The couple have retained 100 acres, and have a few cattle and are still working in partnership with Bevan to run their well-known standardbred broodmare operation.

Grice is happy with that, and it’s enough for him and his much-loved huntaway Nigel to occupy themselves with each day.

“The three essentials for farming are a good wife, a good dog, and a good farm vehicle,” he said.

Betty had something to say about that, chiming in “I’m glad I’m before the dog”.

And there’s another saying relevant for Grice, one used for old farmers not really wanting to retire, and that is that they will “die with their boots on”.

“Yes, that’s about me,” Grice said.

Police are reminding anyone who sees someone acting suspiciously after a post appeared on social media warning people of an older man in a green station wagon.

The post said that the person had seen the man sitting in the vehicle outside their house watching children playing, before driving off after being approached.

A police spokesperson said they were unable to find any record of the incident being reported to police, but said they understand incidents like that can be worrying.

“We know that reports of incidents such as these can cause considerable concern for parents and other members of our community,” the spokesperson said.

“We would urge everyone to be alert, not alarmed, and to take the opportunity to have conversations with your children about what they should do should they feel unsafe.

“Police want people to be safe and feel safe. If you see someone acting suspiciously, call 111.”

And road clearing would be easiest if the amount of snow stayed less than 25 centimetres without

too many drifts. Snow flurries are expected to continue in coming days and temperatures will remain cold on the skifield.

Meanwhile, Mt Hutt has already reached its magic one-metre mark on main trails after a significant snowfall earlier this month. And there is plenty of off-trail terrain open, however, the new snow will be much appreciated in being able

to improve the snowpack in these areas.

Its race programme is in full swing, and American and Korean development team skiers are training.

Meanwhile, Mid Cantabrians are being warned to prepare for a cold week ahead with the possibility of snow as low as Methven overnight.

Temperatures will plummet

from a relatively balmy high of 16 degrees in Ashburton yesterday, to just seven degrees tomorrow, featuring rain and southerlies.

“It’s quite a dramatic change,” MetService meteorologist Peter Little said.

There would be a cold end to the week, with highs no more than 10 degrees on Thursday and Friday.

Snow Watch for the Canterbury high country and foothills, valid for 37 hours from 3am Tuesday to 4pm Wednesday. Snow is expected to fall as low as the level of Methven, at about 300 metres above sea level.

Busy calving season off to great start

Lowcliffe sharemilker Ralph Tompsett is gearing up for a busy calving season with the first of an expected 1150 newborn calves arriving this week.

“It’s five a day right now, but in a week it will ramp up to between 50 and 100 a day,” he said.

Five fulltime staff and two specialist calf rearers will take care of the newborns and their mothers over the 10 weeks of calving that kicks off the new milking season.

The team is keeping an eye on cold weather and snow forecast for the end of this week, but Tompsett says the cows are in good condition following a kind winter so far.

Those close to calving are moved to a paddock near the milking shed and checked regularly. The newborns are collected once a day and moved to the calf shed.

That time was important for the calves to have their first colostrum drink, allowing antibodies boosting immunity to be passed from mother to newborn, he said.

“Each calf will have had up to 24 hours with mum and we would expect them to have had a feed of fresh colostrum.”

Around 300 heifer calves will be

kept and raised as replacements for the herd, with most of the others sold as beef calves.

Tompsett said the goal was to have zero bobbies, male calves for which there was no market, and farmers were always looking for alternative markets.

While the calves are fed twice a day in their warm pens, the mother cows are also brought into the yard and given a health check.

They usually join the milking herd four days after calving. “We check them for health problems and mastitis and any other issues after calving.”

The milk will be collected by Fonterra when volumes increase in the next couple of days.

Tompsett said calving was a busy time for staff and keeping work/family life in balance was important. During the peak of the season, cows were checked every half hour.

“We rotate duties around night checks to ensure it is not the same person. All our guys have families and it is a priority for us to balance work with family.”

Expected calving dates are predicted from scans on every member of the herd earlier in their pregnancies. Two weeks prior to their due dates, they are drafted out for special feed and nutrients.

Slow intake of councillor nominations the norm

A distinct lack of nominations for this year’s local body elections, more than a week after nominations opened is not out of the ordinary.

Heading into Tuesday, just three nominations had been received, with Selwyn Price’s nomination for the Ashburton ward, Leen Braam for both mayor and the Ashburton ward and Kelvin Holmes for the Methven Community Board.

But electoral officer Anthony Morton said they weren’t at all concerned with the low amount of activity at this stage.

“It’s pretty par for the course, really,” he said.

“Usually the first week or so is quiet and then things slowly build up until the final week when everyone gets moving.”

Morton said it was out of their control when nominees filed the paperwork to make things official but did stress that their message was to anyone who is certain of standing to get themselves nominated at the earliest possible time.

“It really just helps us with not having to process everything all at once, but it also gives time should there be any problems with a nomination.”

The process of becoming a can-

didate for the election is, in it’s entirety, quite simplistic but does require some rules to be followed to ensure the nomination is valid.

The nominee must be on the current electoral roll and the two people who nominate them must also be on the roll. If nominating someone for a ward position as a councillor, those nominating must reside within that ward boundary – however, nominators for mayoral contenders can come from anywhere in the Ashburton District.

Meanwhile, Local Government New Zealand is calling for all eligible people to take action and enrol to vote.

LGNZ Chief Executive, Malcolm Alexander, stressed the importance of participating in the selection of those who will make decisions that affect most people’s lives on a daily basis.

“Local government shapes the place that you live. It’s the pavements you walk on, the roads where you drive, the water in your shower, and the parks, libraries and swimming pool where you take the kids,” Alexander said.

The push to enrol follows a the launch of LGNZ’s Vote 2019 campaign, which aims to lift nationwide voter turnout in local elections and increase people’s engagement with their local

council.

“About 90,000 people have enrolled or updated their details over the last month, but there are approximately 60,000 people whose packs have come back marked with no address.

“If you’ve moved house, but haven’t updated your address, do it now by going to vote.nz​, visiting a PostShop or calling 0800 367-656, and asking for a form to be sent to you.”

At the last local body elections, Ashburton had the fourth highest voter turnout with 53 per cent, with a real surge in voters coming in during the final few days of voting.

Hunt for more firefighters

The Mt Somers Rural Volunteer Fire Force are on the hunt for more members again as they look to build their base of volunteers.

Chief Leslie Huggins said the brigade’s membership currently sits at 16, and with some of those not being active firefighters yet, they can struggle to make numbers up to attend calls, which occurred on Saturday.

Firefighters were called to a fire in a calf shed in the Mt Somers area at 2.06pm.

Huggins said they were only able to get a couple of firefighters to the station, meaning the Methven Volunteer Fire Brigade had to attend.

Methven Chief Brent Anderson said it was a smouldering fire, and that it was just a minor job.

Huggins said that while not being able to get enough numbers for call-out on the weekend was uncommon, call-outs during the day can often be an issue.

“We only have a couple of members that actually work in the township,” he said.

“It is just a country thing, but it would be nice to have a few extra members.”

curred in a property on the Methven Highway in the Lauriston area at 9.10am.

Anderson said it was again another minor job, with the fire causing no damage to the property.

The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade were also in action on Sunday, responding to a false alarm at Bradfords.

Sections of Racecourse Road have suffered because of unsatisfactory road drainage and council has had to carry out a number of pothole and dig-out repairs in this area. If the roadside drainage is not corrected, it is possible that the whole length of Racecourse Road will be con-

tinuously affected in the future.

The work will entail reconstruction of the channel into a shallow dish by stripping existing vegetation. The existing flat shoulder will be deepened with a minimum invert of 300mm below the edge of the road surface.

All materials, except for top-

soil, will be carted away and disposed of in a council designated pit. Topsoil will be stripped and returned to allow regrowth of grass when the work in completed.​ Council said motorists’ patience was appreciated during the upgrade.

Support trust launched for Gloriavale leavers

With an influx of Gloriavale members fleeing the secluded religious community and heading for South Canterbury, Timaru couple Liz and Graham Gregory have already helped dozens transition and reintegrate into the community.

Supported by other trust members, local church groups and volunteers, both Liz and Graham are now calling on the wider community to help fund a Gloriavale Leavers’ Support Trust, helping to fund operational costs, contributing to vehicles, setting up homes, schooling, legal counsel and wages to pay a dedicated support worker.

Liz, who is serving as the trust’s general manager and support worker, says families typically left the community under the cover of darkness with very little time and possessions and virtually no understanding of the “outside world”.

“Some families leave with more than 10 children, and once they have left the community, it’s likely they won’t be able to make contact with their friends and family who they have left behind,” she said.

“It’s a very difficult transition for them. They have many similar practical needs to migrants and refugees, but there are no

government funds available, or programmes which are set up to help them specifically.”

And that’s where the Gloriavale Leavers’ Support Trust comes in - continuing to build on the voluntary efforts since 2013 and aiming to raise $100,000 through a Givealittle page.

The trust’s support worker will liaise with the families and other agencies to help facilitate practical, financial, emotional, spiritual and educational needs.

“It’s a huge job helping support families of up to 10 children, who need significant funds to get a house set up and school uniforms,” Liz said.

“Another large family just left and they urgently need a 10-seater van. There’s no government funding available,

which makes it all the more difficult.” Gregory wanted to thank the public for their ongoing support, kindness and interest in helping to support former Gloriavale members.

“Your donations will be well used. Our trust has eight members who have first and foremost been involved with Gloriavale leavers for many years, along with useful skills in business and management,” she said.

“But we need your support to continue the great work that has already been done. Please ask your friends and business contacts if they would consider donating to our trust.”

The Givealittle page, which has been live since Tuesday, July 23, has already raised $6100 among 90+ donors, with an open target of $100k.

Armed police are in a stand-off with a person with a weapon at a property in St Andrews in Hamilton. Police were called to the Morrow Avenue property at about 3pm yesterday after reports that one person was threatening another person, a police media spokesperson said. The person is believed to have a weapon such as a knife. The victim was out of the property and safe, but the person who made the threats with the weapon was refusing to come out of the house.

Measles in prison A case of measles has been confirmed at the Mt Eden Corrections Facility. Deputy National Commissioner Andy Milne said on Saturday evening one prisoner was confirmed as having measles after showing symptoms the day prior. The prison contains nearly 1000 prisoners, with a further 500 staff working at the prison. “The prisoner was immediately isolated on Friday, along with another prisoner that he was sharing a cell with,” Milne said.

Sentence reduced A babysitter found guilty of recklessly killing a 1-year-old baby in her care has had six months taken off her jail sentence. A jury found Fijian-Indian Shayal Upashna Sami, 21, responsible for the death of Aaliyah Ashlyn Chand on January 6, 2015, at her onebedroom Worcester St flat, after a 2017 trial at the High Court in Christchurch. Sami, who was five months’ pregnant at the time, said the child fell off a couch during an “unwitnessed accident”. The jury accepted she didn’t intend to kill her. Aaliyah died in intensive care about 8.30pm the following day.

Her parents, Dev Chand and Anjani Lata, were at her bedside. Sami was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. However, Sami appealed both her conviction and sentence to the Court of Appeal, claiming she was the victim of a miscarriage of justice.

Her lawyer, Jonathan Eaton QC, argued there was a lack of “essential balance” in the summing-up at the trial’s conclusion.

Restriction days set to double

Farmers with water takes connected to the Ashburton River face double the number of days on restriction under a review of their irrigation consents.

Environment Canterbury is reviewing 93 surface water and groundwater consents that affect the river to raise minimum flows and farmers have been digesting information over the past few days about the reliability of their supplies with new conditions that stipulate when they can take water.

ECan says some existing con-

sents don’t have minimum flow conditions and that is a key reason why the review is taking place.

The aim is to raise the minimum flow in the river to 6 cumecs by 2023.

Modelling shows that in a very dry year (like 2015-16) the number of days on full restriction in late summer would go from 31 to 58 for consent holders with State Highway 1 minimum flow conditions.

South branch takes would go from 31 to 62 and North branch takes from 31 to 85.

All consent holders have been

sent draft new conditions and have been invited to a meeting with ECan today.

Regional council staff are expecting to field many questions.

Those not at the meeting will be able to find the answers to common questions later on ECan’s website.

Planning manager Andrew Parrish said last week modelling showed there would be an increase in flows throughout the tributaries and mainstream of the river, in particular the reach from State Highway 1 to the mouth.

A report on the impact of the

review on ECan’s website says the extent of the impact would depend on where in the catchment the water take was located.

“The largest impact will be on those resource consents which do not currently have a minimum flow.”

A minimum flow of 6 cumecs at the State Highway 1 bridge was needed to maintain flows for migrating trout and salmon, optimising instream habitat for aquatic life and keeping the river mouth open for an extended period.

Online threats made against road roller driver

Police are ramping up security measures to protect the man who allegedly took a road roller on a car-destroying rampage at a boy racer meet in Upper Hutt.

It follows threats being made against the man on social media.

A witness to the carnage in the early hours of Saturday morning has described the chaos as the roller was used to damage and push a number of parked cars on Eastern Hutt Rd in Silverstream.

Harley, who did not want his surname used, claimed people were injured by cars as drivers “frantically” tried to flee the area.

A 47-year-old Porirua man has name suppression after appearing in the Hutt Valley District Court at the weekend, charged with endangering transport and drink-driving.

Harley said a group of car enthusiasts had met at the site of what’s believed to be a new subdivision to check out each other’s cars and “network” – sharing tips on paint jobs and vehicle upgrades.

They were on a public road and were not causing any damage to the area, he said.

“All of a sudden this roller starts up.”

He thought someone might have been fooling around with the equipment and went to confront them, but soon realised it was nobody from the car scene

Four people were killed in a truckcar crash in a remote Bay of Plenty forestry block yesterday.

The crash happened at the intersection of Bonisch Rd and Parapara Rd in the Kaingaroa Forest about 6.40am.

A fifth person has survived the initial crash with critical injuries and was trapped in a vehicle.

Inspector Brent Crowe confirmed the four killed were forestry workers.

Cancer plan would save lives in Mid Canty - Falloon

The man operating the roller was yelling, Harley said.

People began jumping into their cars and trying to drive away, hitting other people and vehicles in the process.

“It was chaos and this person just kept rolling.”

Police said one person sustained leg injuries and another suffered facial injuries after an altercation that ensued.

But Harley said many people were getting hurt.

Harley stayed at the scene to try to make sure everyone got out the way, and saw several near-misses where people jumped out of cars as the roller advanced towards them.

He claimed to see the roller throw a yellow Altezza around “like a rag doll”.

“We have in place and are working on several more safety measures to ensure the ongoing safety of this subject and his

property, due to the threatening sentiments posted on social media,” said acting area commander James McKay. Harley said the incident was unprecedented.

“In my time I’ve been out in the car scene, I’ve never seen anything like that.”

“Our crew are trying to push more and more young ones to get to the track,” said Harley, adding the Wellington car scene had been in place for more than 30 years.

One person sitting in the passenger seat of a ute was visibly distraught, holding their head in their hands as the ute was also let through to the crash scene.

“Canterbury DHB figures show the number of patients discharged from elective surgeries in the nine months to March was 2902,” he said.

This was behind where it was at the same point in the 2017 to 2018 year, which meant hundreds of locals were seeing delays to important cancer treatment.

Falloon was affirming the goal set out by his party leader Simon Bridges at National’s annual conference in Christchurch at the weekend.

Bridges said the next National government would fund and dedicate an extra $200 million for Pharmac to fund cancer drugs.

“We want drugs that will save and prolong lives,” Bridges said.

He also wanted to put an end to what had become known as the Cancer Postcode Lottery, and introduce legislation to set up a National Cancer Agency to deliver better diagnoses, better access and better treatment for cancer sufferers across New Zealand.

Mass shooting claims 4 AP Three people were killed and at least 15 others injured after a shooting that sent panicked people running at an annual food festival in Northern California.

Also dead is the shooter, who used a rifle and gained entry to the packed festival by cutting through a fence to avoid the tight security, including metal detectors, police said.

Some witnesses reported a second suspect, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said, but it was unclear whether that person opened fire. Police confronted the gunman within a minute of shots being fired.

Witnesses reported confusion and panic as shots rang out at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in the city of 50,000 located about 176 kilometres southeast of San Francisco.

The shooting occurred during the three-day celebration featuring food, cooking competitions and music that attracts more than 100,000 people.

The band Tin Man was just starting an encore when shots rang out.

Singer Jack van Breen said he saw a man wearing a green shirt and grayish handkerchief around his neck fire into the food area with what looked like an assault rifle.

Van Breen and other members of the band dove under the stage. Van Breen says he heard someone shout: “Why are you doing this?” and the reply: “because I’m really angry.”

Police close in on fugitives as teens spotted AP Canadian police are headed to the community of York Landing, Manitoba, in pursuit of fugitives Kam McLeod, 19, and Bryer Schmegelsky, 18, after the pair were spotted by members of an Indigenous patrol group.

Locals in York Landing, which borders Split Lake, say they heard gunshots and were told to stay inside their homes as police responded to reports the pair had been spotted searching for food. They reportedly fled into thick trees when they were spotted.

York Landing, halfway between Lake Winnipeg and Hudson Bay, is home to less than 500 people. It is serviced by ferries which leave every few hours on a two-hour trip to Split Lake.

The pair are wanted over the murders of Australian backpacker Lucas Fowler and his American girlfriend Chynna Deese and university professor Leonard Dyck, 64 on highways in British Columbia this month.

Sightings of the pair were coming in thick and fast, prompting authorities to move the search area from Gillam to York Landing.

RCMP Manitoba issued an advance warning for locals to expect a sudden and heavy police presence in their area but told residents not to post photos of the manhunt or disclose their location.

Over the weekend, police carried out a door knock in Gillam, where the teens’ last known getaway car was found abandoned and torched in dense bushland near a rail line

in Gillam last Monday.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police searched every room of every house in the tiny town of 1200 people, as well as hundreds of abandoned buildings in the area.

Police are working on the theory that after the teens torched the small SUV they used to cross the country, they can’t have got far. Police believe they are either hiding in town or on the outskirts – a swampy area known to be particularly inhospitable.

Locals say conditions are brutal, and the suspects, if on foot and unprepared, would have difficulty surviving. A number of bears have been spotted by officers canvassing the area.

Military aircraft were called in over the weekend to join a fleet of vehicles including ar-

moured cars. Drones are flying overhead and tracker dogs are leading officers on the ground.

Police have received more than 200 tips from members of the public that suggest Schmegelsky and McLeod are still in Gillam, but they have not ruled out the possibility the teens altered their appearances and slipped out of the region altogether.

What we know about their journey so far is they quit their jobs at Walmart in Port Alberni on the country’s west coast and made purchases for a 1700km drive to Yukon territory on July 12.

They told family they were looking to make some “real money”. They travelled to Whitehorse, where they contacted relatives before they fell off the radar.

Dumping ‘brutal’ Matt Preston has opened up about the brutal way he discovered he and his MasterChef co-hosts had been dumped.

Preston was in a car last Tuesday afternoon on his way to Triple M to do an interview spruiking the MasterChef finale when he read on social media he’d been given the flick. “It would probably have felt worse if I was by myself, but the fact I was with one of the publicists with Ten who had no idea and who was just aghast by the situation, especially about to go and do a national radio show, it was a bit of a shock,” he said on ABC radio yesterday.

Mark Todd – one of our greatest I

can’t profess to having been able to watch the real magic of Mark Todd in the ’80s, mainly because I wasn’t born – but the stories and the footage available now certainly rank the equestrian rider as one of the greatest Olympians our country has produced.

Yesterday’s announcement that Todd was officially retiring from the sport should, considering his age, have come as no surprise.

Of course, we’ve been down this path before with the affable character, but this time it would appear there’s no coming back.

It’s the end of a colourful and glittering career in the saddle, one which, as a country, we have largely watched and enjoyed as the master of such a finite craft has made it look easy.

In fact Todd made it look so

easy sometimes as he waltzed his way around the ring, or expertly circumnavigated a cross country field that it would draw some amazing comments from commentators and rivals.

My favourite without doubt, though was the reference to him being able to ride a cow, or rocking horse, with his hands tied behind his back and still win.

There are so many things that stick out when you think about Todd and his career.

For some reason the mind always thinks back to that stunning horse, Charisma, known more affectionately as Podge and the ride that he and Todd went on together.

Sport is so often about the combinations, the team work and the ability to click with one another and few could argue that there have been many better sporting duos than Todd and Charisma.

Many will remember watching him on the screens as he competed for New Zealand, whether it be at an Olympic Games or in one of the prestigious equine events around the globe.

Todd competed at seven Olympic Games for New Zealand, and his list of victories across his amazing career include two

individual gold medals, four wins at the prestigious Badminton and five wins including two where he rode in both showjumping and eventing and a run of World Equestrian Games where he was on two gold medal-winning teams.

But if there’s a crowning glory it was his acknowledgement as FEI Rider of the Century, a reflective nod at just what the guy who grew up thinking he’d be a farmer, but instead became a sporting icon, has achieved and done for the sport of equestrian.

I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Todd on numerous occasions during his foray into the thoroughbred racing scene while working in a former role and I always found him obliging, interesting and

someone who you could stand and talk to for hours.

But above all else, his passion for the horses he was working with was his greatest attribute.

He spoke not of them as items on a shelf, but as though they were members of his family and that glowing trait will forever endear him to the public.

It won’t quite be the same to nestle into the chair next year and watch the Olympic Equestrian team go about their business in search of gold knowing that the all-too-familiar wise head on experienced shoulders won’t be stepping into the ring, or on to the course to try and get us over the line.

But it’s a retirement well deserved for one of the best we’ve seen.

reporter picked up on comments I made a few weeks ago at the Federated Farmers Dairy Industry Group AGM that the combined levy take paid by farmers to Dairy NZ, Beef & Lamb and the Foundation for Arable Research was roughly $100 million a year.

That’s $1 billion over 10 years, with the government chipping in additional money for research.

My simple question was, ‘are farmers receiving value from this?’. It generated a lot of feedback.

Since then, the mycoplasma bovis levy has been firmed up – roughly $240 million; a climate change levy will cost farmers $50 million per year; and a new biosecurity levy is being proposed.

We also pay a NAIT levy.

A number of Federated Farmers members let me know that I missed out some stuff. Primary producers pay 32 different levies to industry organisations, though farmers aren’t involved in all of those.

Wow! I honestly didn’t realise the tally was that high. That’s the value of feedback from Feds members. It keeps the board and staff in touch, and on their

toes.

The amount of levies we all cough up do sneak up; you pay them almost subconsciously without questioning the value as often as we should.

Some of these charges are taken off farmers before they get paid by processors for their meat, wool, dairy, etc. There’s little accountability, members said to me in emails.

Okay there’s the odd vote to approve it but it can seem like a fait accompli, and the farmer turnout is usually low.

A few years ago, when people got really brassed off with the wool industry group, farmers kicked it for touch in a vote. But what generally happens, members told me, is that farmers could say no in a vote, the industry group gets a bit of a wake-up call, and they’re back a year later with a revised plan for another

vote. The levies keep rolling on.

So thanks everyone for the feedback; I learned some new stuff. My apologies for not replying to everyone; there were just too many.

You may ask if I run the same ‘value for money’ ruler over Federated Farmers. Yes, I do. Staff probably roll their eyes sometimes at the amount of questions elected leaders ask them but the main role of any board member is not to be a “Yes, Minister”, but to take that close look at things, and to ask the hard questions.

We are not so much staff-driven at Feds. Rather we’re an elected farmer-led organisation with awesome staff in support. A truly grassroots led, political advocacy group.

We don’t do science and research. You wouldn’t trust science from us, or Greenpeace, or Forest and Bird out of concern that ideology might intrude on facts. That’s why Federated Farmers relies on other independent organisations for that.

We also heavily rely on feedback from members. Yes, those pesky emails, surveys, meetings and time talking directly to members has a major influence

on development of our policies and actions. While we don’t tell you how to farm, feed your cows, etc, we do a bit of education and at times share advice.

So, if you want to influence Federated Farmers’ policy, to help us get it right, we welcome input. Give it to us by phone or email, or even better get involved with the meetings and leadership at one of our 24 provincial branches. Your voice counts.

We are one of the only organisations that is grassroots and put farmers before politics and dollars. We are independent and don’t rely on other sources of income.

As a Waikato member texted me in relation to the $100 million levy tally from other industry bodies: “It makes the Feds membership looks cheap.”

UK shoppers buying NZ merino lamb Merino lamb grown by Mid Canterbury farmers is being showcased by the UK’s leading online supermarket.

SILERE Alpine Origin Merino lamb is a joint venture between farmer-owned co-operative Alliance and the New Zealand Merino Company and is selling through British online supermarket Ocado.

Online supermarkets are growing fast and Ocado has been voted best every year since 2010. Ocado has no bricks and mortar stores and provides all home deliveries from its warehouses.

Ocado shoppers can choose from a range of the New Zealand merino cuts, including a boneless leg joint, extra-trimmed rack, loin fillets or boneless rumps.

About half a dozen Mid Canterbury farmers are among suppliers.

Shane Kingston, general manager sales at Alliance, said feedback from shoppers about SILERE had been overwhelmingly positive.

The pouch is recyclable as part of the paper stream and is suitable for re-pulping.

“The packaging innovation, the product of our partnership with Hilton Food Solutions, the company that packs and distributes SILERE to Ocado, is also an important step forward,” Kingston said.

A 12-month SILERE alpine origin merino contract has recently been released to shore up supply to meet the growing market demand from Ocado and other channels.

Red meat export numbers continue to increase Exports of sheep, beef and co-products increased by 8 per cent to $8.8 billion for the year to June 2019, according to the latest analysis from the Meat Industry Association.

More than 399,470 tonnes of sheep meat was dispatched, similar to 2018 volumes but the value of these exports increased by 6 per cent.

For beef, export volumes were up by 9 per cent to more than 453,202 tonnes with a 13 per cent increase in value. Co-products exports increased by 5 per cent.

For the month of June, beef exports to China increased to more than 25,000 tonnes, more than the annual exports to Taiwan, Japan or Korea.

The volume of beef exports to Japan also increased by 10 per cent compared to June 2018. For the first half of this year, since the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) came into force, exports to Japan are up 29 per cent by volume compared to the first half of last year.

While the overall volume of

sheep meat was down for the month compared to last year – including exports to China, the value of exports to China increased by 20 per cent.

China remains the largest market by value for red meat and co-products with $319m exported to the country in the month of June 2019, followed by the US and UK. Tim Ritchie, chief executive of the Meat Industry Association (MIA), says China has again been the lead performer in the last 12 months.

“China has taken more than half of New Zealand’s sheep meat exports and beef exports have increased by 79 per cent by volume, overtaking the US as our largest beef market.

“It’s also very pleasing to see we’re getting more bang for our buck off sheep meat exports with value up 6 per cent on last year despite volumes remaining the same.”

The weaker UK market in the last 12 months, with overall value down by 11 per cent reflected continuing uncertainty over

Brexit, he said.

“Overall, this is an outstanding result for the sector delivering value for all New Zealanders. As the country’s second largest goods exporter and largest manufacturing sector, the red meat sector is critical to New Zealand’s prosperity.

“The sector directly employees some 25,000 people, mainly in regional New Zealand, supporting the livelihoods of families and rural communities. That means these export figures are good news not only for our national economy, but for regional New Zealand.”

By Guy Trafford No right-minded person wants to use chemicals if they could do without them. They’re expensive, probably unsustainable and go against what the majority of food consumers want.

The growing organics movement is testament to this.

However, for a range of reasons, mostly which are about protecting plants (and animals) from insect pests, fungi, bacteria and plant competition, to name a few, some of these are used to meet consumer demand for acceptable appearances of their food.

By and large, both chemical users and food consumers have faith that the authorities who regulate the use of chemicals, have it right and provide safety margins to help keep everybody safe.

A recent release and compilation from Agcarm (Agricultural Chemical and Animal Remedy Manufacturers Association) has provided useful information showing what the value of chemicals are to the food production industry.

“Horticulture, for example, would lose 75 per cent of the value of its crops. A severely reduced kiwifruit production would have resulted from the deadly 2010 PSA outbreak.

Vegetable growers face losses of around 88 per cent. In many cases, it would not be possible to grow commercial quantities of crops without these products. In other cases, yields would be much lower and the economic impact of this would be substantial.”

No doubt, at one level, this is true and yields and quality are ensured through the use of chemicals. This does not however, provide the full story and certainly doesn’t explain why there are now 120 organic kiwifruit orchards in New Zealand and over 4 million organic trays of kiwifruit being exported and at a premium.

The European Commission has legislation coming through requiring the scientific assessments, and decisions on how pesticides were approved, to become more transparent.

The apparent distrust of what, presumably, chemical companies are purporting to be safe attributes of chemicals is largely driven by the public’s growing distaste.

Monsanto has had multi-billion dollar lawsuits held against it, and while it is appealing these decisions, given the number of lawsuits, driven mainly by people blaming glysophate for causing cancers, that are queuing in the wings unless there is some dramatic evidence to disprove the claimants positions, the use of glysophate is going to be seriously curtailed.

Within New Zealand fuel is being added to the fires of distrust with delays in releasing the results of the latest four-year survey into selected aquifer wells for the detection of pesticides. Conducted by the ESR, last year, the survey results were due in January/ February, but after delays, are now scheduled to be released in September.

This year is the first year that glyphosate has been included in the study as the testing process was said to be too expensive in the past and, perhaps at that time, was not believed to be a major risk.

Some councils have had their results released to them and while there does not appear to be any wholesale build-up of chemical residues not all results at the regional level have been released.

As a (small) farmer who is not organic I am reliant on what the regulators and manufacturers advise and this requires them to be fully transparent (in a timely fashion) so we can make informed decisions.

As the old saying goes sunlight is the best disinfectant.

AgResearch recently released survey results of what insects New Zealanders may prefer (I deliberately didn’t use the word Kiwis here as it could really create confusion).

Sounding more like a survey of trout streams apparently black crickets came up trumps with locust nymphs, followed by manuka beetle and then huhu beetle grubs.

Insect farming won’t get rid of the porina moth, which is a shame, as the squishier bugs are least popular.

However, if the manuka beetle is deemed acceptable then perhaps grass grub and black beetle harvesting may return some rewards.

Over 70 per cent of participants said that they recognised that eating insects was likely to be better for the environment than eating meat, however, the survey didn’t say whether they would. Livestock farmers shouldn’t be overly concerned as a recent study has shown that consumption of all meats are increasing.

A combination of an increasing global population along with increased amounts per head of capita in developing countries has meant there is no risk of meat going off the menu just yet and it appears there is plenty of room for the fake meats as well as the real.

The British prime minister decision has (finally) been made, looking vaguely like an Oscar award rather than an election result, with as expected, Boris Johnson being elected.

As he has promoted the view that a “hard exit” for the EU would be acceptable in his eyes, New Zealand exporters have some reason to be nervous.

Tim Ritchie of Meat Industry Association, speaking on RNZ, stated the view that, while in the very short term he didn’t see major issues as for lamb exports, our major export into in the UK and the EU, we are in a lull in the processing season. However, as we approach October, which is the ultimatum deadline for the UK decision, it is getting close to when chilled lamb are being processed and exported to meet the Christmas market and uncertainty around export agreements is going to lead to negative influences on farm gate prices.

There have been indications that many in the UK government will do there best to avoid a “hard exit” but whether the numbers are there to achieve this remains to be seen.

Given the landslide win Johnson won with it maybe he gets his way, whatever that may be. So, the show continues.

Markets A continuation of last week with a gradual improvement over most cattle with cow, bull and prime all lifting. China’s underpinning is certainly helping with 30 per cent of the Chinese herds or 15 per cent of global pig numbers being culled in the attempt to get rid of African swine fever.

Sheep Little movement of sheep schedules but the sale yard prices held especially for better lambs and heavy ewes. Lambs are getting up to $230 and heavy ewes $250.

Wool Prices for coarse wool held and may have slightly improved at last week’s Napier sales.

Cattle This is where most of the schedule improved this week with 10-to-15 cent lifts on various grades and this translated in to firming prices at the saleyards.

Venison No movement either way for venison for the third straight week.

Dairy Little to report regarding milk prices although it appears there is starting to be more interest in dairy calves as people get there heads around how to deal with M. bovis.

The judgment also notes several settlement offers had been made during the course of the litigation, which has been funded by LPF Group.

The decision said that in June 2016 BDO liquidator Andrew Bethell offered to settle for $32 million, while during trial in October 2018 a settlement of $25.5 million was mooted.

One of the original defendants, Siew May Kwan, had settled with the liquidator mid-trial.

On November 15, after the trial had concluded, BDO offered to settle for $37.5 million.

The judge also awarded Paul Collins, the fifth former Mainzeal director who was sued but not found liable, costs in the trial. Collins was represented by the Chapman Tripp lawyers which represented Shipley, Gomm and Tilby.

NZ Windfarms has signed a 15-month hedge on all the production from its Te Rere Hau wind farm near Palmerston North.

The firm says the deal with a “major” New Zealand-based counter-party, takes effect from October 1 and provides a quarterly fixed price on the variable production from the project. The company wouldn’t disclose the price or counter-party.

Container trial to go nationwide NZME Supermarket chain Countdown is ramping up the war on plastic with an initiative that’s set to change the way shoppers approach supermarket aisles.

From yesterday, the company was rolling out a bring-yourown container scheme across the country after a successful trial in selected stores.

The BYO containers can be used for the deli, meat and seafood counters, which have until now relied heavily on single-use plastic wrapping.

The containers will also be cleaned, dried and weighed by

staff before being filled after concerns were raised about the hygiene of customers’ containers.

Supermarkets were required by law to ensure food sold wasn’t contaminated by its packaging.

Kiri Hannifin, Countdown’s general manager of corporate affairs, safety and sustainability, says reducing the amount of plastic and packaging remains a priority for the company.

“We know that BYO containers are an option many of our customers are looking for in their drive to reduce single-use plastic,” Hannifin said.

“We’ve already received lots of requests from concerned Kiwis

wanting us to give them this option.”

The move comes after a sixweek trial was rolled out at selected stores to troubleshoot the service and gather customer feedback.

“The priority for us is to ensure that food safety is not compromised and that more waste isn’t created as a result.

“Part of our service will include training our team, making sure containers are clean and leak proof, and ensuring that containers are weighed correctly to ensure customers are only paying for the weight of the product they’ve purchased.”

The amount awarded against former Mainzeal directors including Jenny Shipley and Richard Yan will remain at $36 million, the High Court has ruled.

Justice Francis Cooke allowed both sides to dispute how much should be paid after he ruled earlier this year that Shipley, Yan, Peter Gomm and Clive Tilby had breached directors’ duties ahead of the construction firm’s 2013 collapse.

In a judgment that reveals multiple settlement offers from the liquidators at BDO, Justice Cooke has ruled his initial liability figure was right.

While the judge found merit in both sides’ arguments, he essentially found that they cancelled each other out.

In any event, whether the directors were liable in the first place will be revisited in the Court of Appeal. A hearing is expected next year.

■■ In a large pot over a medium

heat, heat the coconut oil, then add the onion, ginger, chilli and garlic. Cook until soft and translucent. Add the laksa paste and continue to cook for a further minute.

■■ Add the coconut cream and chicken stock, bring to the boil and then turn down to a gentle simmer.

■■ Add the chicken breast, prawns and the beans. Bring to boil.

Simmer for 5 minutes or until

the chicken is cooked through.

■■ Season with sugar taste.

■■ Divide the warmed cooked spaghetti into four serving bowls.

Pour the laksa curry over the noodles, Arrange chicken, prawns, beans attractively and top with sprouts, coriander, mint and fresh limes.

hotographs from the Ashburton Museum collection are among the most popular items for visitors.

We get countless enquiries from people seeking images of family members, events or places around our district.

With over six million images in our collection, we can usually find what people are looking for. Many of these images have featured in past heritage page articles, but even then, the volume barely touches the surface of just how many, interesting and extensive are the images in the museum’s collections.

1 – Often a new addition to the family prompts parents to get a family portrait taken, such as the Hill family.

There is a baby but also this family which has ‘Walker’ written on the back.

4 – A group of nurse finalists, no year or date given, although it was during the time of Dr Mason as superintendent. The envelope also has individual portraits of the finalists.

Charles Tindall was a local photographer, with premises located in the old Saunders building.

The offerings shown here give a slight example of the range of images from Tindall’s collection.

Although most of the collection has yet to be scanned, they are indexed, making it easier for museum staff and researchers to discover what else we have.

While some of the images are damaged, once scanned to a digital format it is possible to retrieve the details and give the images new life and new value that might otherwise be lost.

Spin key for the Black Caps NZME They ripped them apart with their seam bowlers at the Cricket World Cup, but now the Black Caps are hoping to put Sri Lanka in a spin.

Four spin bowlers have been named in their 15-man squad for two tests in Sri Lanka next month, with Will Somerville and Ajaz Patel given a chance to repeat their heroics from last year’s test series win over Pakistan, while Mitchell Santner and Todd Astle provide balance as theoretical all-rounders.

It’s quite the contrast to their squads for tests at home – where one spinner is usually selected as a box-ticking exercise, and barely bowls – but the Black Caps are preparing to play on Sri Lankan wickets where spinners utterly dominate the domestic wicket-taking charts.

In the last test series to be played in Sri Lanka, England regularly bowled three spinners and only one front-line seamer.

That sole seamer would then bowl five overs to open the innings, in tandem with a spinner, before being sent to the deep to operate as a specialist fielder.

That could be an indication that New Zealand’s star seam-bowling trio – Trent Boult, Tim Southee and Neil Wagner – could again be broken up on the subcontinent, despite all three being selected.

If conditions dictate, potentially only Boult could be used.

That would leave the spin quartet vying for three places. Astle is unproven at test level, but he and Santner – whose record (34 wickets at 37) is actually better than most of the options tried in his 18-month test absence – would allow New Zealand to bat deep.

Ready to battle for the shield

Mid Canterbury netball coach Claire Tappin got exactly what she wanted out of her side’s trip to Lincoln on Sunday.

Mid Canterbury took two wins from their four games at the annual Field Days tournament at Lincoln, but for Tappin it was about more than just results.

The tournament was a rare opportunity to get some actual game time heading into the annual Hanan Shield tournament, which Mid Canterbury was set to play in this Sunday in Waimate, so for Tappin it was more about working out combinations than winning.

Mid Canterbury – an invitational side at the Lincoln tournament which was usually just contested between Selwyn, North Canterbury, Hurunui and Kaikoura – started the day against North Canterbury and came away with a 14-11 win.

The games were shorter than the Mid Canterbury players were used to – two 10 minute halves compared to the hour-long games they’d encounter at the Hanan Shield – and at the end of the first half Mid Canterbury had held a slender 7-6 lead which they built on in the second half.

“I was expecting North Canterbury to be one of the toughest oppositions, so I was really pleased with the start,” Tappin said.

She was particularly happy with one of the side’s youngest members, College A’s Sammy Holden, who had a standout performance at goal keep which she carried through to the rest of the day.

Selwyn were Mid Canterbury’s second opposition and again Tappin was expecting a tough game.

She was right.

The two sides were level at 9-all at half-time, when Tappin made some planned changes.

With their one and only lead-in tournament done, Mid Canterbury have now turned their attention to the Hanan Shield.

But, the new combinations took a while to settle and Selwyn capitalised, taking the game 2118.

“The result wasn’t what was important, it was more a case of our combinations coming through, so we did a lot of learning in that game,” Tappin said.

Mid Canterbury then started game three well against Hurunui, leading 11-8 at half-time and although this time there were no changes made at the break, the

second half didn’t go so well with Mid Canterbury losing it 3-7 to go down 15-14.

Charlotte Samson at wing defence was a standout in that game, while captain Leanne Clemens also shone through on a day where Tappin described her leadership as outstanding.

“I was impressed with her cap-

taincy and the way that she ran the team and the mana that she commanded,” Tappin said.

The side’s final game was against a Kaikoura team that featured a couple of men, due to them having struggled to field a team.

Mid Canterbury dominated, leading 12-4 at half-time and eventually winning it 21-7.

“That was the only game where all of our players ended up in positive stats, doing more good stuff than bad stuff,” Tappin said.

Defensively, the combination of Sophie Worsfold at goal defence, Holden at goal keep, Caitlin Adlam at wing defence and Rachel Curd at centre put a huge amount of pressure on Kaikoura through the court, Tappin said.

Overall, she said it was a strong showing by her whole squad leading into the Hanan Shield tournament.

Anita Watson also showed strong leadership on a day where she played various roles on court, while for two of the squad’s younger members Liberty Ross and Brooke Coad, it was a huge learning experience and they stepped up.

Tappin said as a coach, her role wasn’t just to lead the side to a win at the Hanan Shield, it was also to help grow and develop players individually, and in order to do that they all needed good game time.

Lincoln had allowed that.

As an invitational side, even if they had won all of their games Mid Canterbury wouldn’t have been eligible to take away any of the day’s prizes.

For them, the Hanan Shield was the one and only trophy on their minds.

That tournament is set to be played in Waimate on Sunday, between Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury and the defending champions, North Otago.

Another loss for Combined Locking depth a concern An 83-7 loss to Rangiora High School on Saturday was one of the low points of Mid Canterbury Combined’s 2019 UC Championship rugby campaign.

With only two games to go in this year’s competition the side were yet to pick up a win, and the latest loss in Rangiora was one of the more frustrating in the eyes of the side’s coaches Brent Middleton, Andrew Morgan and Warren Donald.

“The boys probably threw in their worst performance of the year, to be honest they were really disappointing and the three coaches were really disappointed with them,” Middleton said.

“They didn’t front up at all, you felt like they might as well have still been sitting on the bus.”

Middleton said the first half was particularly tough, and while things did improve somewhat in the second half, the damage was already done with Rangiora leading 54-7 at half-time.

“At the end of the day, that Rangiora side are a very good side.”

While Mid Canterbury Combined had

given away a lot in size to some of the powerhouse schools in the Crusaders secondary schools’ rugby zone this season, Rangiora weren’t all that different when it came to size. But, they were a very well drilled side.

“They played a very good brand of football and you could see why they are sixth on the table,” Middleton said.

Mid Canterbury Combined did create some opportunities, but all too often took the wrong option.

“It was a tough game for the fact that we know we are better than that,” Middleton said.

With just two rounds to go, life wasn’t about to get any easier for Mid Canterbury Combined as they well and truly stared down the barrel of a second win-less season on the trot.

This weekend they were off to Christchurch to take on a St Bede’s College side that was currently sitting third on the table, and in the last round they were off to Nelson to take on the table topping Nelson College side.

The All Blacks have, or had, three great locks for their World Cup campaign.

Brodie Retallick, Sam Whitelock and Scott Barrett are about as good as it can get as a lock squad, although South Africa also has tremendous depth in the position.

Unfortunately for the All Blacks, daylight is fourth in the locking department.

A position of great strength might now present something of a problem.

We rank the replacements if Brodie Retallick is ruled out of the World Cup. Patrick Tuipulotu Ball-carrying power is his calling card but despite flashes of potential greatness, the big Blues middle rower never strings together test class performances.

Tuipulotu’s potential remains, but he’s a man who can’t find his mojo. His failure to grab his World Cup chance against Argentina is a big concern.

Jackson Hemopo The All Blacks will be downsizing if they take Jackson Hemopo as a specialist lock.

He’s got all the attributes and looks made for test combat and you could confidently play him against Italy, Namibia and Canada in the pool stage. But lining him up in the big games, and against big packs, is another matter.

Put it this way. RG Snyman, the bloke who has put Retallick’s World Cup in doubt, is 2.07m and 117kg. Hemopo is 1.95m and 112kg. And size does matter.

Luke Romano Luke Romano was once part of a Big Three, with Retallick and Sam Whitelock.

He’s become a forgotten figure, because of Scott Barrett’s amazing rise.

Romano is a power ball runner rather than an athlete. He’s been there and done that, and any player from the Crusaders’ centre of excellence has advantages.

The 33-year-old, who played the last of his 31 tests two years ago, is a longshot but might be the best bet in the World Cup furnace.

VERDICT: Anyone outside of Retallick, Whitelock and Barrett is a concerning downgrade.

Shooters on target in Oamaru Mid Canterbury’s smallbore rifle shooters were on target in Oamaru at the weekend, ensuring their name will be the latest engraved on the prestigious Andrews and Faulkner Shield.

The Andrews and Faulkner was the South Island Association’s teams championship event involving 16 open teams of 12 shooters, and eight junior teams of five shooting for the Greenhough Trophy, and after finishing an agonisingly close second in the big show last year, the team from Target Shooting Mid Canterbury (TSMC) headed south with a point to prove.

Hosted by the North Otago and East Otago Associations on a 16-mound temporary range at Oamaru’s Waitaki Recreation Centre on Saturday, it was a huge day which TSMC president Nina McKenzie said ended with total euphoria for the Mid Canterbury shooters.

“This is a very old and prestigious trophy in our sport with a rich history and we are both proud and humbled to be the holders,” McKenzie said.

The course of fire was a double target first (200.20), followed by a single target (100.10), for a maximum possible 300.30, per shooter – a format designed to build pressure throughout the day, as each team had one shooter per round, with updates published every 3060 minutes.

“No further updates are given once the last three-four shooters are left, meaning that the final result is only revealed at the prizegiving and dinner that follows the event,” McKenzie said.

TSMC’s day started well with great opening scores from leadouts, McKenzie and Sandy Bennett, followed by brothers Nick and TJ Stewart, and at the first progress point Mid Canterbury were leading the open match.

McKenzie said excellent scoring from their two ‘senior’ juniors, Shania Harrison-Lee and Emma Smith – with a personal best of 100.8 as part of her double – continued the trend, while Colin Taylor had a steady and slightly unlucky double, which was followed by a cracker from Bill Rankin.

Due to ill health and with great regret, Bryan Hunter had to with-

draw before the event and Charlotte McKenzie, a rising junior, stepped up to take his place.

“The loss of such experience and skill right before a big match would see many teams falter, but the team belief was firm and Charlotte produced a very good double, which was followed with a sound performance by the captain Steve McArthur,” Nina McKenzie said.

Keith Bonnington and Andrew McKenzie produced almost matching targets and at the halfway point TSMC had a promising lead.

Their open team averaged

194.9 for the double card round while in the junior match, leadout Amelia Swan soaked up the pressure on her first time on a foreign range and and produced an outstanding double.

Two veterans of the junior team, Smith and Harrison-Lee, also produced commanding double results, before Jack McIntosh and Jacob Kilworth took the mound and shot together, with Charlotte McKenzie finishing things off.

Nina McKenzie said the single card rounds were a joy to behold.

“The team knew that they needed to keep the pressure right on, and without exception every

single member stood up.”

The card of the round belonged to Smith, with a 99.8 and the narrowest tester for another possible.

The single card average was 97.6 for the team, with no member under 96.

TSMC’s juniors were in a tight race with Ashley and Nelson, and were second by two single points going into the last round, but stayed in that runner-up spot with Ashley just taking out the Greenhough Trophy by five single shots.

In the open grade, Mid Canterbury returned home the Andrews and Faulkner champions, while Nelson were second and Ashley third, with last year’s winners Marlborough fourth.

It was a huge weekend for all, but particularly for Harrison-Lee who was named top shot for both the open and junior competitions, while McArthur, Bennett, Harrison-Lee, Nick Stewart and Nina McKenzie took out the top five trophy, and TJ Stewart, Smith, Taylor, Rankin and Charlotte McKenzie took the second five trophy.

Harrison-Lee was also awarded with individual South Island trophies, which were shot for several weeks ago, but saved for presenting at the event.

She was junior, women’s, masters and open champion, which was an oustanding result for a junior.

TSMC’s Andrews and Faulkner win will see them go on to face North Island Association Champions, Manawatu, for the coveted Candyman Cup and the title of national association champion.

Time called on illustrious career

NZME One of New Zealand’s greatest ever athletes – Sir Mark Todd – has announced his retirement at the Camphire International Horse Trials in Ireland, going out on a high as part of the Kiwi team to win the Nations’ Cup at the event.

The FEI Rider of the 20thCentury can lay claim to a haul of victories including two individual gold medals from the Olympic Games, four Badminton titles, five Burghley crowns and more.

He has competed at seven Olympic Games for New Zealand, including two where he rode in both showjumping and eventing; and a run of World Equestrian Games where he was on two gold medal-winning teams.

It was an emotional moment for 63-year-old Todd as ESNZ high performance eventing manager Graeme Thom made the announcement at the Irish prizegiving and was met with gasps from commentators and spectators at the event.

“I had been thinking about it for some time,” said Todd who will now turn his focus back to racing.

“The opportunity came up at the end of last year with the racing and I can’t keep going (with eventing) forever.

“I had initially thought I may stay on

for one more Olympic Games but since I got back into the racing my attention has been taken away from the eventing and I was finding it harder and harder to focus on the eventing.”

He admits the fire had gone out in his belly.

“It is not just about the competition and unless you are 110 per cent focused and driven towards that goal, you won’t succeed . . . and I certainly wasn’t.

“I have been here once before but there will be no comeback this time.”

Todd said he had initially planned to retire at the end of the current season but changed his mind.

“Once I decided I was going to retire, I just wanted to finish sooner rather than later.

“I had three nice horses going to Camphire and was riding one of my favourites in the Nations Cup so thought it would be a nice way to end it all. To end up on the winning team with Tim and Jonelle (Price) has just been an added bonus.”

It had been a very emotional day and Todd said that while it wasn’t easy to make that final decision, he feels hugely relieved to have done so.

He felt he was lucky to have had a career that had many highlights.

“I am very fortunate,” he said.

“I guess the highlight of my second career was winning Badminton with Land Vision but one of the main highlights has been the people I have been involved with.

“I have worked with fabulous owners, wonderful sponsors, amazing people who have worked for us over the years and great trainers.

“It has been a real privilege to have been part of this team and this journey.”

Todd has 10 race horses in work and his long-time owner Sir Peter Vela is still very much involved as well as some of his other owners.

“I am training in the UK at the moment but we loved our time in Australia with Eminent so it is very possible some time in the future we would love to take another horse down there.

“We will take it slowly – I am under no illusions it will be difficult breaking into the British racing scene but I would like to think we can have a crack.”

Todd’s decision had been made with his wife Carolyn who he admitted would be far more relaxed about the racing game than she was with eventing.

“It was very much a joint decision.

“It is a dangerous sport, and she worries, so she will be far more relaxed about this and has always loved racing.”

Sir Mark Todd has retired from equestrian eventing.

Dixon back on podium top step AP

Top day for MCUFC

Scott Dixon’s victory yesterday was a lot closer than his previous five at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Dixon held off rookie teammate Felix Rosenqvist by 0.0934 seconds in the Honda Indy 200 to put himself back in contention to defend his IndyCar season championship.

It was the closest finish at MidOhio and the third-closest on a road course in IndyCar history.

The Chip Ganassi Racing driver from New Zealand is third on the career victory list with 46.

“I would have preferred winning by 10 seconds instead of banging wheels for a few laps,” Dixon said.

“It feels really good for the sheer fact we haven’t won here since 2014.”

The final lap on the 13-turn, 2.258-mile road course featured an epic battle with Rosenqvist – and a failed manoeuvre by points leader Josef Newgarden of Team Penske.

Newgarden tried to get around third-place Ryan Hunter-Reay in the keyhole part of the course, but ended up bumping Hunter-Reay and spinning off the track.

Hunter-Reay of Andretti Autosport was third, 1.16 seconds behind Dixon.

Newgarden blew a chance to add to his points lead over Alexander Rossi.

Rossi struggled to fifth, but still reduced Newgarden’s advantage to 16 points.

Newgarden, who finished 14th, blamed himself for the incident.

“I was trying to get on the podium,” he said.

“It was my fault to force the issue.”

Mid Canterbury United headed to Christchurch needing to win, and win big, in their latest Mainland Football division one match on Saturday.

And that’s what they did, beating the St Albans Shirley Thunder Panthers 5-0 to ensure they remained at the top of the table – a position they currently shared with the Halswell United 1964s.

The two teams were streaks ahead of the rest in this season’s competition, both sitting on 40 points at the top of the table with identical records of 13 wins, one draw and one loss, with the next team being the third-placed CTFC Turtles with nine wins and 28 competition points.

But the Halswell side had an edge when it came to goal difference, which meant that the Mid Canterbury side needed to score a lot of goals in their final matches of the season if they wanted to edge ahead and take that top spot.

The Halswell United 1964s also picked up another win on Saturday though, beating Halswell United Goal Exchange 3-1, ensuring they still had the edge when it came to that goal differential.

With two games to go in the regular season, they are seven goals ahead on goal difference.

Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury United’s second side in division five had a big win on Saturday, beating SASFC’s division five team 9-1.

It was also a good day for the Methven FC Seniors in division three, as they extended their winning streak which also has them at the top of their table, beating the Christchurch United Old Dogs 2-1 in Christchurch.

In division six, the Methven FC Reserves were at home on Saturday, but lost 3-2 to the CTFC Newbies.

Penske’s Simon Pagenaud, who was sixth, is 57 points off the lead.

Dixon is 62 back, with four races left.

“It’s a big shift,” Dixon said.

“These are the kind of weekends you need.”

The race to the checkered flag included lapped cars that put some space between Dixon and Rosenqvist, who has not won on the Indy circuit.

Team owner Chip Ganassi gave the go-ahead for the two to race to the finish.

Rosenqvist and Dixon bumped but not enough to cause an accident that would have prevented a 1-2 team finish.

“If it was someone else, I’d go a bit harder,” Rosenqvist said.

“Being Scott, you know he’s going to be fair.

“Chip says the first rule is don’t take out your team-mate.”

Dixon finished on the red alternate tyres that run faster but are less durable and he was losing seconds off his lead in the closing laps.

“We were closing on them but we came up a little short,” Hunter-Reay said.

Dixon sensed his advantage was slipping away.

“With about 15 (laps) to go, I was moaning to the team I have to pit again,” he said.

Rosenqvist got a closeup look at why Dixon is third in Indy victories.

“He was on poor tyres and low on fuel and came out on top,” Rosenqvist said.

“If we had another lap, we might have passed him.”

Pagenaud has finished first, fourth and fourth in his past three races and has quietly crept into contention to win his second championship (2016).

Newgarden certainly has made things interesting with his ill-advised pass attempt.

“I’m not really sure what Josef was thinking doing that,” Hunter-Reay said.

Dixon, fourth in points, knows he will become a father for the third time in December.

“He also knows offseason surgery on his ailing left elbow is in the offing.

“It’s not good. It’s still an issue,” he said.

Rossi will be the defending champion again at the Pocono Raceway 500-mile race 500 on August 19.

Locals in Australasian championship

Two Mid Canterbury names feature in the line-up for this year’s New Zealand representatives for the 2019 Australasian Young Drivers Championship to be held in New Zealand.

Both Sarah O’Reilly and John Morrison will represent their country in the championship, which is set to be held in December this year.

In order to qualify for the four New Zealand spots available, O’Reilly gained entry courtesy of winning the New Zealand Junior Drivers’ Championship which was held earlier this month, while Morrison picks up his spot in the competition courtesy of being the leading South Island driver for the season.

It caps off outstanding seasons for the two Mid Cantabrian drivers, who collectively won over 80 races between them in the season from August 1, 2018 until tomorrow, when the harness racing season officially ends.

This year the Australasian Young Drivers’ Championship will be held over the course of a week with racing action coming from Addington, on the grass track at Methven, two meetings at Manawatu and a final meeting at Auckland on Friday, December 13.

Joining Morrison and O’Reilly in the championship to represent New Zealand are defending champion, Sheree Tomlinson and North Island leading junior driver, Benjamin Butcher.

Putting the big push on sevens rugby

A push on sevens in rugby’s off-season could result in the establishment of Mid Canterbury’s first women’s sevens team, and the return of a local club sevens competition.

Mid Canterbury Rugby development officer Jason Ree said both ideas had been thrown out to clubs and he was hopeful they would get off the ground and result in Mid Canterbury fielding both men’s and women’s teams at the South Island Sevens for the first time ever.

came at the end of a club rugby season where Ashburton’s Celtic club had entered a team in the Canterbury women’s competition for the first time.

Ree said the women’s game was growing at a rapid rate and Mid Canterbury needed to capitalise.

“It’s is growing, and it’s growing so fast, so quickly, we just need to keep that going,” Ree said.

The proposed comeback of club sevens would also keep momentum going for players whose club season had wrapped up.

Ree said it had been a number of years since a club sevens tournament was last held in Mid Canterbury.

The proposal put out to clubs late last week via the Mid Canterbury Rugby Facebook page last week mooted a couple of potential club sevens tournaments, to be held around September and October.

“There’s probably not enough to have a women’s tournament, so it would probably just be men, but if we had some interest from women and girls we could have a training session during the weekend,” Ree said.

The club sevens would be aimed at colts and senior grade players, and Ree hoped that some of Mid Canterbury’s nine clubs might even enter two teams be-

tween their colts, senior Bs and seniors.

If it got off the ground the club sevens would be a chance for players to put their hands up for selection into the Mid Canterbury team for December’s South Island tournament in Timaru.

All going to plan, that side would be joined by Mid Canterbury’s first women’s team, and with the MCRU’s new women’s development officer Nicole Purdom organising it as well as possibly taking to the field, it could be a more than competitive side.

The South Island women’s sevens tournament had been dominated by the bigger unions

– Canterbury, Otago, Tasman and Southland – in recent years, but hosts South Canterbury had entered in the past.

Three women’s teams qualified to go to nationals from the South Islands.

Last year Canterbury beat Otago in the women’s final, so those two took the first two spots, while Tasman took the third and final place by beating Southland.

Tasman won the men’s title at last year’s South Island sevens, while Mid Canterbury failed to win a game and didn’t qualify for nationals – a rare outcome which they’d be out to improve on this year.
