Tourism is booming in the Ashburton District, with the overall visitor spend hitting $182 million for the year to June 30.

The 7.8 per cent growth in spending came from significant growth in international visitors. This sector was up 16.6 per cent to $54 million last year.

The largest growth came from the Singapore, Malyasia and Australian market, said Experience Mid Canterbury general

manager Bruce Moffatt. Domestic visitors spent $128m in the same period, up 4.5 per cent. The biggest winners in the visitor spend were retail and the food and beverage service sector – such as restaurants, cafes and stores.

The accommodation and tourism activities sector has grown year on year.

Measuring that growth, however, was not easy as a significant portion of these sectors’ spend is transacted via online booking platforms. This data was not able to be collected by the Ministry of

Business, Innovation and Enterprise, Moffat said. “MBIE is working with the major online booking solutions such as AirBnB, Booking.com and Expedia.com to try and gain further insights.”

Over the past few years there had been steady growth in the district’s tourism sector but the past year saw the most significant increase in spending, he said.

Woman trapped in toilets

Nats vow to cut class sizes

Ashburton firefighters had a busy Saturday rescuing a woman trapped in the East Street toilets and making sure the Ashburton Art Gallery wasn’t burning down.

The day started about 7.45am with a brief callout to the Hotel Ashburton where a fire alarm had been activated, but firefighters’ services were not needed.

Around 12.15pm, a man called emergency services for help when his wife was stuck in one of the public toilets on East Street.

Fire chief Alan Burgess said the elderly couple were passing through town and stopped to use the facility.

A malfunctioning lock meant the woman could not open the door to get out.

A crew with screwdrivers managed to get her out before being diverted to the Ashburton Art Gallery about 12.50pm where a smoke and fire detector had been activated, deploying the gallery’s special fire retardant curtains to protect art work on display.

Burgess said firefighters could not find a cause for the activation

Ashburton firefighters on Saturday rescued a woman trapped in the East Street toilets. and treated it as a false alarm.

Gallery curator Shirin Khosraviani said it was the third time in the life of the gallery that the special fire curtains had been deployed – happily, not for a fire.

The system was checked and reset. Gallery staff had spent the weekend clearing 470 artworks from the recent Ashburton Society of Arts annual exhibition, which attracted hundreds of peo-

ple to the viewing space.

Ashburton firefighters had another callout later in the day when they were called to the Ashburton Cemetery, where a rubbish bin was on fire.

Small win in water race closure debate

Biodiversity won the day over policy last week when an impassioned plea was made for one of the Ashburton District’s water races to be removed from the closure list.

The council has a policy that sets out a water race closure programme as part of its commitment to reducing its water take from the Ashburton River.

The latest race on that list was a section of waterway along Longbeach Road. It flows through five properties and while four of

those property owners want it closed, the fifth does not.

And so determined were Sheryl and Hal Stivens to fight the closure, they put their case to the council’s service delivery meeting last week. And they won.

They have three bores on their lifestyle block but said they wanted to keep the race open as an alternative source of stockwater and to protect native freshwater species.

Rather than closing the creek, issues with flooding could be resolved if the creek was moved, she said.

The creek’s inhabitants could not be simply moved to a river because that habitat was quite different, Stivens said.

“You shut a natural waterway and there are immediate problems; there are so few places for these creatures to go.”

The council is currently reviewing its surface water strategy and councillor Selwyn Price

suggested the closure decision should be on hold until this strategy review was completed.

“Are we getting close to the tipping point where we need to consider not closing some races?

Don’t close this one and let’s put a moratorium on all closures until we do our surface water strategy,” he said.

Councillors decided the water race would remain open, but councillor Neil Brown issued a word of warning.

“This race won’t remain open forever. It will be revisited once the strategy is reviewed,” he said.

National will reduce primary class sizes if it comes into power in 2020, leader Simon Bridges says.

The announcement to lift the number of primary school teachers in New Zealand – an issue which once badly damaged National – was the centrepiece of Bridges’ speech at his party’s annual conference yesterday afternoon.

“All our kids should get the individual attention they deserve,” Bridges told an audience of about 600 party members at Skycity Conference Centre in Auckland.

“That’s why I want more teachers in our primary schools, to ensure smaller class sizes for our children.

“Schools currently get one teacher for every 29 nine and 10-year-olds. It’s lower than that for younger children.

“Those ratios should be reduced.”

The call on class ratios comes six years after National was forced into a humiliating backdown on class sizes when it was in Government.

Bridges’ choice of the policy to headline his first conference speech as leader is similar to that of former Labour leader David Cunliffe, who promised to limit classes to 26 students at the Labour annual conference in 2014.

“More teachers means more attention for our kids at a stage of life when they need it most,” Bridges told National members.

“To achieve their potential and reach their dreams our kids need less Facebook and more face time with teachers.”

National was committing to attracting more teachers and ensuring they were respected, Bridges said. That included looking at their pay, he said. The policy would be developed over the next two years, and did not include a specific figure of what class sizes could be reduced to.

The long road to change

While not every elected member agrees with the outcome, the Ashburton District Council is legally obliged to review its councillor numbers at least once every six years.

And it is also obliged to set those numbers according to a local government formula that ensures the right number of councillors per head of population. In Ashburton’s case those councillors are divided between three wards – urban, eastern and western.

As population distribution or councillor numbers change, to keep the representation numbers right, the council occasionally needs to make minor adjustments to those ward boundaries.

Last week councillors agreed with a proposal that will see their numbers reduce from 12 to nine plus a mayor, the most significant change in the structure of council since local body amalgamation in 1989.

When the Ashburton District Council was formed from the merged Ashburton Borough and

County Councils, the first combined council saw councillor numbers at an unwieldy 18 but this was reduced to 12 at the next election. Numbers have remained static since then with councillors opting for the status quo at each review.

Ahead of next year’s local body election there was a mood for change.

The option of cutting numbers was debated over several months after a recommendation from the council’s representation review working group. Last week there

was final discussion on the proposal after the community consultation process was completed.

That process involved a preconsultation survey, consultation where the public could make submissions either supporting change or supporting the status quo.

Just 33 submissions were received, with 22 of those supporting a reduced number of councillors.

They agreed by a significant majority to adopt that proposal for nine councillors – five in the

urban ward and three each in the eastern and western wards and that decision will be publicly notified.

Anyone who submitted in the first round has an opportunity to oppose the proposal again.

If appeals are received, the local Government Commission will make a final decision on councillor numbers. If no appeals are received the reduced councillor number will become the final proposal.

The change will be implemented at the October 2019 election.

■ HOUSE FIRE TRAGEDY

Man dies trying to rescue partner The 55-year-old man who died in a fatal house fire in Pukekohe on Saturday night had rushed inside to save his partner.

But the man had not realised his partner had already returned outside after discovering smoke and he died while looking for her.

Fire risk manager Terry Jordan said the couple had lit three candles in the house earlier in the night because they had no power at the property.

“The power had been turned off into the house because the occupant didn’t want to pay the power bill.”

The house was only occupied some of the time, he said.

A candle in the lounge caused the fire, which engulfed the entire house.

“It was munted,” Jordan said.

The couple had been sitting outside when they decided to pop to the shops. When they returned 20 minutes later the candles had caught the 1930s weatherboard house alight.

“One rushed in because she really wanted to go to the toilet and found it smokey and came out. Then the other person came in thinking that person was still in the house so went in looking for her.”

There were no smoke alarms at the property.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was called to the fire at about 8.45pm and found the home had been entirely consumed by the blaze. About 10 fire engines and their crews battled the fire.

A police media spokeswoman said a scene examination at the Blake Road property had been completed and the fire was not being treated as suspicious.

A formal identification process is to be carried out before police notified next of kin.

A neighbour told the Herald the man had lived in the rental property with his partner for a couple of years, a neighbour said.

Trust’s new focus financial winner

Business is booming for the Ashburton Trust with the organising posting a normalised profit to March 31 that was 24 per cent up on the previous year at $524,000.

After several trading years where its books remained in the red, the Trust reshaped itself, developed a new business model where it sold off its business, and in doing so turned its financial fortunes around.

Rather than show its profit with business sales and revaluations included, Trust board chairwoman Fay Watson said the Trust had chosen to show a ‘normalised’ bottom line with these removed.

This would set the benchmark for coming years when business sales were no longer part of the picture, she said.

“The current year is particularly pleasing given it carries $300,000 for project maintenance at the Hotel Ashburton and Tinwald Tavern. Without these it would have been $824,000,” she said.

After a tough 10-year trading period after the Trust lost its monopoly on liquor sales through a community poll, it decided to develop a new business model that saw it sell several of its businesses but retain the real estate.

It is now largely a landlord but still retains the Devon Tavern business.

It was particularly pleasing that the numbers predicted when the business model changed were be-

ing realised today, Watson said.

Sales of the Somerset Grocer, Speights Alehouse, Hotel Ashburton and the Tinwald Tavern had generated a significant cash pool, she said, and after debt had been paid down, funds would be reinvested.

That reinvestment was unlikely to be in bricks and mortar.

As it reshaped its business model, the Trust had also made significant ‘backroom’ changes Watson said, including fewer staff and moving to a much smaller office.

Looking to the future, the Trust was committed to being part of the Ashburton District for decades to come and would be considering further change from a licensing trust where accommodation and liquor were its main business, to a community trust.

That would be a significant change after 70 years in the licensing business, but its landlord status meant it was now closer to a community trust model.

Even though its status might change, the Trust would remain a significant funder for the community through grants and donations, she said.

“The Trust is now in its most positive place for at least 10 years but in its heyday it directly employed a lot of people and it had a very strong balance sheet. We have looked at our future and have decided we’re intergenerational, we’re here for the benefit of our grandchildren’s grandchildren.”

The Trust’s annual meeting will be held on Thursday at 5.30pm at the Devon Tavern.

Trust shares success with Mid Canterbury community Since 1992 the Ashburton Trust has given more than $23.5 million dollars in grants to almost 500 community organisations in the Ashburton District.

And last week it added to that tally when it gave away $311,533 to 21 organisations in its July grants round.

The biggest winner was the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union, who received $60,000 for rugby goal

posts and expenses.

More money was given to rugby with the second largest grant going to Ashburton Celtic Rugby Football Club, $45,000, for building repairs.

Other significant grants were made to Hampstead School, $25,000 for a trampoline course, Mid Canterbury Youth Charitable Trust, $20,000 for a coach salary, Presbyterian Support, $18,000

for a community family worker salary, Basketball Mid Canterbury, $17,500 for fees, insurance, equipment and uniforms and Ashburton Seniors Centre Charitable Trust, $17,033 for an air conditioner, painting and operating costs.

Caution urged on Chinese village spend

When it comes to spending money on the restoration of Ashburton’s Allens Road Chinese settlement, the Ashburton District Council should proceed with caution, councillor Diane Rawlinson says.

Last week councillors were asked to approve spending money on urgent work that would stabilise some buildings. Funds for this are available from a pool approved last year by the council.

And while her fellow councillors agreed to spend some of that money, Rawlinson said caution was needed.

“We could throw an awful lot of money at this and we’d still need to get people to visit the site. I don’t think we should be throwing bucket loads of money at this,” she said.

Chairman of the Chinese village working group Leen Braam said he had hoped to get a reasonable amount of work done with a small amount of money, but that was proving to be impossible.

Because the council took over stewardship of the land in an agreement with descendants of the original settlers, they were bound to honour an agreement made to restore buildings and

preserve their heritage value, doing nothing and spending nothing was not an option.

The issue of how it funds future work has yet to be decided by the council.

During the Christchurch earthquake period of 2010, 2011 visitors spent $130m and $148m and spending has continued to climb at a slow but gradual pace over the past nine years.

Much of that growth had come through digital media strategies as well as EMC working more closely with its strategic partners, Moffat said.

“And I’m confident we’ll see continued growth. Much of this growth has come from digital media strategies and working closely with our strategic partners.”

Data is measured from physical eftpos/credit card terminal transactions within the Ashburton District. The data does not include online bookings such as accommodation, cash payments or trading card spend such as fuel cards.

Girl, 11, dies in bus crash The victim of a bus crash near Turoa skifield was an 11-year-old girl.

The bus, carrying 31 people, rolled on Ohakune Mountain Road, injuring at least 18 people on Saturday afternoon.

Police acting Whanganui area commander inspector Sue O’Neil said a formal identification process was ongoing, but confirmed a young girl died as a result of the crash.

“Once the formal identification process has been carried out and next of kin notified police will be in a position to release more details.”

O’Neil said given there were a number of people injured in the accident it would take some time to establish exactly what happened.

The injured passengers were taken to Rotorua, Taupo, Waikato, Whanganui, Palmerston North and Wellington hospitals following the crash.

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts chief executive Ross Copland told Newstalk ZB he had spoken to the victim’s family.

“They’re obviously distraught.

It’s an absolute tragic loss of life – particularly when it’s a young person.”

of respect.” The bus carrying 31 passengers rolled halfway down Ohakune Mountain Road, which runs to Turoa skifield, just after 2.30pm on Saturday.

Ruapehu Alpine Lifts said the bus was carrying passengers down from the Turoa ski area when the incident happened.

One motorist said there were two cars behind the bus when it crashed.

“People were being treated on

the side of the road ... One woman had clearly hurt her mouth and numerous people had blood coming from their heads.”

Another bus operator, who did not want to be named, said one of his drivers was following the bus and saw the bus hit a bank and roll onto the road.

Investigations by the Police serious crash unit, commercial vehicle safety team, CIB were under way. The bus has been taken to Whanganui to be examined.

A Waikato District Health Board spokeswoman confirmed two women aged 29 and 31, and a 20-year-old man were this morning stable in a ward.

The 31-year-old woman had been in a critical condition when she arrived on Saturday afternoon.

A St John spokesperson said at least 15 other people had moderate injuries, including head injuries that had knocked them out, and were treated at a triage centre set up in Ohakune.

Three helicopters were flown to the crash site on Mt Ruapehu to help transport the wounded.

The accident left a number of skiers stranded on the mountain for several hours after the road was closed in both directions.

McCaws head to Hawaii after announcement Former All Black Richie McCaw and wife Gemma have gone abroad for a small holiday in Hawaii after announcing they are expecting their first baby.

“Rich and I are very excited to announce that we are expecting our first baby later this year,” Gemma McCaw posted on Instagram at the weekend along with a photo of a tiny pair of Adidas running shoes between a men’s and women’s pair.

Gemma and Richie married in a lavish wedding in Wanaka in January last year.

Gemma, 28, was a member of the Black Sticks from 2008 until after the 2016 Olympics, when she decided to take a break. During her career she competed in three Olympic Games.

He led the team to two Rugby World Cup victories and is the most capped test rugby player of all time.

In brief Pound residence During the four monts from March 1 to June 30 60 dogs took up temporary residence in the Ashburton District Council’s pound. Nine of those were rehomed and six were destroyed.

The rest were reunited with their owners. During the same period 10 dog attacks were reported to the council and 36 infringement notices were issued.

Building consents For the year to June 30, 1179 building consents were issued in the Ashburton District, with a value of $122.7 million. That number was well up on the previous year, 875, but a late flood of consent applications for replacement log burners ahead of the October 31 deadline boosted numbers for the 2017-2018 year.

These rose from 335 to 681. For the first six months of this calendar year, building consent numbers were well down, but those were for much larger and much more complex homes council building services manager Michael Wong said. To the end of June consents received had dropped each month, with 357 issued for those months compared with 472 last year. June showed the most significant drop in numbers with just 48 issued compared to 105 last year.

Exhibition with a rural focus

Working on Mid Canterbury farms gives Gemma Bell and Billy Dowle opportunities to see some pretty epic sights – which neither are willing to keep to themselves.

The two Methven Young Farmers have teamed up for an exhibition at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall, showcasing some of the spectacles and animals they encounter while working.

Gemma, born in North Yorkshire, has called New Zealand home for six years and finds herself drawn to anything land oriented.

“I particularly like looking at the relationship between the nature, the animals and the social side of things, the farming,” she said.

Painting is her first love, but she’s also quite happy behind the lens of a camera.

Her works in the exhibition feature subjects like tahr, sheep, the vista from her farm to Mt Hutt, and a quirky cow called Ashley from the farm where she grew up.

Another painting of a fantail and a boar juxtaposes the native with the introduced.

And her largest piece, created painstakingly with a palette knife, depicts a rodeo bull.

Balancing paining with farm tasks is tricky, she concedes, but it only takes something she really feels a connection to, to get her going.

Meanwhile, Billy Dowle, from Redcliffs Station in the Rakaia Gorge, believes he has one of the best offices in the world.

Having his camera in his work bag has paid off on a number of occasions when he has been able to snap a sheep at shearing, panoramic views across a braided river or his five loyal sheepdogs.

One portrait, which Billy said “you definitely couldn’t stage,” captures the moment all his dogs perched on a rock above Lake Heron.

“The only hard thing is that the photos of the dogs which I like are not necessarily the best,

Putting his pieces on display at the Mt Hutt Memorial Hall was an opportunity Billy just “couldn’t say no to,” he said.

Shakespeare as seen from a different angle

An accomplished arts laureate is bringing a whirlwind Shakespeare show to Ashburton this month.

Michael Hurst will play the ageing thespian driven to the brink by his demons in No Holds Bard on August 18.

Battling in his brain are a foul-mouthed Macbeth, a confused Hamlet, a know-it-all Othello and a ravenous Lear.

The performance, which is touring the country, has been described by Theatrereview as a “well-crafted, clever, uproariously funny and ultimately moving journey”.

Alongside a number of high-profile stage and television appearances, Hurst has made his mark as a director for Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and companion series Xena: Warrior Princess – and for the smash hit musical Pleasuredome which played to huge crowds in Auckland.

Others may recognise him from the credit rolls of Westside, Evil Dead, 800 Words, Spartacus, Step Dave and The Almighty Johnsons.

In 2003, Michael was awarded an Arts Foundation of New Zealand Laureate Award.

He was later designated an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2005 for services to film and the theatre.

Ashburton audiences can watch his solo show, including a 30 minute question and answer session with Hurst afterwards, on an open hat basis – meaning they pay what they think the show is worth.

Peanut butter choc chip slice

1/2 C wholemeal self-raising flour 1/2 C plain flour 1C rolled oats 1C desiccated coconut 1/2 C firmly packed brown sugar 1/2 C crunchy peanut butter 90g butter 1/4 C honey 1 egg, lightly whisked 3/4 C milk chocolate chips ■ Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Lightly grease and line an 18cm x 28cm slice pan, extending paper 2cm above the edge on the two long sides.

■ Sift flours together into a large bowl, returning husks.

■ Stir through oats, coconut and sugar.

■ In a saucepan, combine peanut butter, butter and honey. Stir over low heat for 1 to 2 minutes, until melted and combined.

■ Make a well in centre of flour

■ Fold 1/2 C choc chips through until well combined.

■ Press mixture into prepared pan.

Sprinkle with remaining choc chips.

■ Bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden.

Chance to make our CBD sparkle W

ith some time to kill between club rugby in Christchurch and the Crusaders/Hurricanes super rugby semifinal on Saturday, we took a 30km/h drive around the city’s CBD. The Square is still dominated by the relic that is the Christchurch Cathedral. The bones of the building are bare for all to see, temporary fencing still in place.

But elsewhere new buildings with businesses big and small are plain to see.

You get the feeling the whole area is about to turn from a caterpiller into a butterfly.

Shoppers with bags are obvious, young people are hugging hello on the streets, cyclists have their own lanes and traffic lights, and there are buildings with

facades that are colourful and thoughtful, with rigid quakeproof frames concealed by palettes of bronze, aluminium, stone, glass and timber. So cool!

True, there is still work to be done. Abandoned buildings, with graffiti and grass growing in the gutters, sit alongside the new.

But there is no denying the CBD is morphing into something special.

Also true that the changes have generated much debate in

both community and council.

That same process is happening here. Our CBD is about to be given the joosh up of its life – that’s when you take something dowdy and make it sparkle.

The Ashburton District Council is playing a part by moving to new headquarters to be built on Baring Square West and by committing to a revamped streetscape.

Some building owners have already taken the plunge and strengthened old buildings to the point they look brand new, or built new ones (think Cass Street).

The Eastfield precinct across the road will feature a new health facility eventually incorporating the Sealy Street Medical Centre; there are also plans for a hotel

and accommodation. Like the justice precinct in Christchurch’s CBD, Eastfield will be an anchor development for Ashburton.

It is important that building owners throughout the CBD all feel part of the picture. Placards that council is about to issue for quake-prone buildings will be the start of a long process for some owners; some may be encouraged to embark on their own projects, others may decide to sell up and run.

Communication, collaboration and goodwill will be needed in spades by all involved and no doubt the CBD will take years to morph into its new shape. The placards will put in place a timeframe for strengthening work to be done and the crux of the work is that people who work in, shop

in or visit those buildings will be safe in the event of another big quake.

The people who have chosen to invest in Ashburton have indicated they are choosing people before profit; they could easily take their money elsewhere and our rural town would suffer. The people of Ashburton in return need to show long-term loyalty, patience and tolerance for our CBD will eventually emerge from its chrysalis.

It’s been seven and a half years since Canterbury’s most devastating quake.

It changed our region forever and through the Building (Earthquake-prone Buildings) Amendment Act that followed, it will change the look of our town.

For the better.

I was interested to read the main article in the July 24 issue of The Guardian.

I was surprised, however, to read that ADC acting CEO, Jane Donaldson, saying the fate of other buildings that need expensive earthquake strengthening is unknown. The fate is clear and the clock is ticking!

Might I suggest that Ashburton District Council do as Invercargill City Council (ICC) and other cities in New Zealand have done and actually make the relevant enquiries of the owners of those particular properties, all of whom

PO Box 77 ADC do know, to get a better insight into and possibly promote, participate and facilitate a similar scheme of co-ordinated redevelopment as has been done for Invercargill’s Tay street (main street) which was, as now is for our own CBD and East Street, in danger of dying/decaying which would be a very serious detriment to the town, its people and to the general future and wellbeing of the district.

ICC has come together with experienced and professional developers to acquire prone properties (and/or include the current owners) in a significant co-ordinated new and refreshed precinct for their most important and historic city area.

This, I understand, will be mutually beneficial to ICC and the other participants. A little like the privately-led Eastfield initiative here in town. And, indeed, similar in concept to ADC’s own Industrial Park.

Some might naysay this is as too hard! Not an unusual thought, unfortunately, but all I urge is that ADC look into ICC’s lead because our own CBD is in a perilous position with many earthquake prone properties becoming non-tenanted and many will run out of the prescribed time for remediation in the same period probably resulting in numerous demolitions and vacant sites “overnight” and a painfully slow unco-ordinated redevelopment.

Slapping on the regulatory Red Stickers on these properties is just the start!

What is wrong with the Ashburton District Council?

I think it is pathetic that the council can spend millions buying land and erecting new council chambers and library, and now want to charge St John Ambulance for the section behind their headquarters so as to give better access for ambulances.

I’m sure the majority of citizens would prefer to have an ambulance service instead of a parking building.

Deadly wildfire rages Two young children and their 70-year-old great-grandmother have died in the wildfire that is sweeping northern California with devastating speed.

The fire has forced 38,000 residents to flee their homes, razed 500 buildings and killed five people – three civilians and two firefighters.

President Donald Trump has declared a state of emergency and a tearful Sherry Bledsoe confirmed the deaths of her grandmother, Melody Bledsoe, and her children, James Roberts, 5, and Emily Roberts, 4, in the city of Redding.

Don Ray Smith, a bulldozer operator who died working to contain the fire, was identified as an 81-year-old man from a small community east of Sacramento.

The so-called Carr Fire started burning on Monday last week. It exploded on Thursday, jumped the Sacramento River and entered the Redding city limits.

Authorities previously identified another firefighter fatality as Redding Fire Department Inspector Jeremy Stoke, who was killed on the job Thursday night.

He had headed out for supplies on Thursday thinking the flames were far away, but while shopping he received a desperate call from his great-

grandson. The boy said he had to come back to the home because the flames were closing in. The family believed the area was not in imminent danger and Melody Bledsoe had no car.

Ed Bledsoe rushed home, but was turned back by police.

The fire was raging and there were walls of flames.

Walt Disney studio has announced that Carrie Fisher will be featured in the next Star Wars movie, using previously unseen footage she recorded before her death.

Actor Mark Hamill, whose Luke Skywalker character appeared to die in last year’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, will also appear in the next movie, which will start filming in London on August 1, Disney said.

Fisher, who played Princess Leia, died suddenly in December 2016 at age 60 after suffering a heart attack just as she was enjoying a career revival with the reinvigorated Star Wars movie franchise.

So far this year, wildfires have scorched almost 1.7 million hectares across the US, above the 1.5 million-hectare average for the same period over the last decade.

Ten dead Three dead in US shooting in quake A shallow, magnitude 6.4 earthquake has killed at least 10 people and injured a dozen others on Indonesia’s Lombok Island, the popular tourist destination next to Bali.

The quake yesterday damaged dozens of single-storey houses and taller buildings and was felt in a wider area, including in Bali, where no damage or casualties were reported.

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a depth of seven kilometres.

In East Lombok province and the provincial capital of Mataram, it lasted about 10 seconds, sending residents to flee their homes onto streets and fields, said Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho.

He said the 10 fatalities and injuries were caused by falling slabs of concrete.

Photos released by the agency showed damaged houses and the entrance to the popular Mount Rinjani National Park, which was immediately closed for fear of landslides.

Like Bali, Lombok is known for pristine beaches and mountains. Hotels and other buildings in both locations are not allowed to exceed the height of coconut trees.

Three people have been killed and seven others are injured following a shooting in New Orleans.

City police spokesman Aaron Looney says the shooting happened yesterday on the 3400 block of Claiborne Avenue, about 5km from the French Quarter. The injured have been taken to a hospital, though their conditions were not immediately known.

Looney said officials are still gathering information about the shooting.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell said in a statement: “There is no place in New Orleans for this kind of violence. I speak for everyone in our city when I say we are disgusted, we are infuriated, & we have had more than enough.

Three more lives - gone. It has to end. It’s unacceptable anywhere.”

US actress Michelle Williams has quietly married, telling Vanity Fair magazine she never gave up on love after the death of her partner Heath Ledger 10 years ago.

Williams, 37, the fiercely private Oscarnominated star of Brokeback Mountain, told the magazine that she married American indie musician Phil Elverum at a private ceremony earlier this month in the rural Adirondacks region of upstate New York. She described her relationship with Elverum as “very sacred, very special”.

Funerals begin for fire victims Funerals for the victims of Greece’s lethal wildfire have begun with the burial of an elderly priest who drowned as he sought safety from the flames in the sea off the coastal community of Mati.

Hundreds of people attended Father Spyridon Papapostolou’s funeral yesterday in his parish of Halandri, a northern suburb of Athens, the Greek capital.

Papapostolou, his wife and daughter were among hundreds who entered the water to protect themselves from the fast-moving flames. But the 83-year-old cleric passed out and drowned, while his wife and daughter survived.

“Father Spyridon was certainly ready for this trip, but not in this way, he didn’t deserve it,” his niece, Ifigenia Christodoulou, said. “I hope that he prays for all us from up there, just as he has done all these years.”

Dimitra Bavavea directed her anger at the “unjust” way that so many people – 86 – had lost their lives. The fire was the deadliest

wildfire in Europe since 1900, according to the International Disaster Database run by the Centre for the Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters in Brussels.

“My sorrow is great as is my rage for those who left people to burn to death so unjustly,” she said. “I hope that those who died are in heaven and I thank you Father Spyridon for all that you have offered us.”

Greece’s public order minister continued to defend authorities’ response to Monday’s blaze. Minister Nikos Toskas told state broadcaster ERT it was impossible to evacuate the area’s 15,000 people in the 90 minutes that Monday’s blaze roared through the area.

In more sad news, the bodies of twin girls who their father initially believed had survived the fire have been identified, private investigator George Tsoukalis said. He said nine-year-old twins Sophia and Vasiliki Philipopoulos were found in the arms of their grandparents, who also perished in the fire.

Thailand celebrates Thailand has celebrated King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s 66th birthday with Buddhist rites. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha led 3500 government officials and members of the public in giving alms to 670 Buddhist monks from across Bangkok at an open field close to the Grand Palace early in the day.

Throughout Thailand, people flocked to temples to pray and give alms to monks in yellow shirts, the colour signifying loyalty to the monarchy. Almsgiving is a typical practice in Thailand where the majority of the population are Buddhists.

Marlborough: Sounds engaging I

t’s easy to become completely immersed in the dozens of heroic stories told through lifelike dioramas at Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre’s Dangerous Skies World War Two exhibition. But the tale of ace Soviet fighter pilot Lydia Litvyak lingered long after we’d stepped back outside into Blenheim’s weak winter sunshine.

Her story is extraordinary, explains our guide Peter Jolly. Not only did she start flying in her mid-teens, but she quickly gained her instructor’s licence and had trained 45 students by the time the Germans invaded the Soviet Union in 1941.

Notoriously rebellious and strong-willed – and fond of unauthorised aerobatics and victory rolls – Litvyak forged her air force application papers to inflate her flying hours so she could go to war.

She became the first female pilot to shoot down an enemy aircraft (much to the dismay of its male pilot) but her recordbreaking run, which included 12 solo and four shared kills over 168

A Marlborough break includes historic heroes and a unique mail service, writes Shandelle Battersby. missions, ended during the Battle of Kursk in 1943 when she was shot down over what is now the Ukraine. She was just 21 years old.

Another great story is told at the start of the exhibition, where a diorama shows handsome Timaru-born pilot James “Spud” Hayter accepting a glass of champagne from a dazzling redhead in a clingy purple dress. Hayter, who had a chequered flying career full of close calls, but who lived until 2006, had just escaped his burning Hurricane during the Battle of Britain when he landed on a posh estate in the Kentish countryside during a cocktail party.

The glamorous redhead happened to be a doctor who took care of Hayter’s minor head wound and, as legend has it, later sent the pilot a bill for her time, perhaps unimpressed when his fiance arrived at the party to escort him home.

A look around Omaka, 10 minutes from Marlborough Airport, is a great way to start or top off a weekend in Marlborough. As well as Dangerous Skies, there’s also Sir Peter Jackson’s excellent World War One exhibit Knights of the

Sky to wander through.

Our time was up, however — we had a pressing task at hand, the daily Marlborough Sounds mail run on board Beachcomber Cruises’ Matua catamaran.

This family-run company operates the only official licensed New Zealand Post rural delivery service by water in Queen Charlotte Sound as well as several other tourism offerings including scenic cruises and various options for accessing the Queen Charlotte Track.

The Magic Mail Run Cruise, which takes about three hours, operates six days a week on different routes, delivering mail and groceries to various lodges and about 100 local residents who live so remotely they may not see anyone else for days.

A friendly seal gave us a wave as we left Picton Harbour on what was a beautifully clear and calm winter morning, and skipper Julian began his commentary that took in everything from the local history and native wildlife to interesting tidbits about life in the Sounds, past and present.

in East Bay where our first customer was waiting on his jetty to exchange his mailbag and receive groceries.

The Saturday route then swung due north to isolated Cape Jackson, where we hovered next to a tender boat as three people and two dogs from Uncharted Wilderness Tours clambered on board for the journey back to town.

We turned around to sweep through Endeavour Inlet (home to 13 accommodation providers, 50 houses and 17 permanent residents) on the way back to Picton.

Most of those we encountered were accompanied by at least one dog, to whom Julian would hand a snack, including the very cute Sooty at Furneaux Lodge.

During summer (when the days are lighter for longer) the boat stops at Ship Cove, one of Captain Cook’s favourite anchorages, for 15 minutes to see the monument named in his honour.

Today however, accompanied by a glorious sunset, we headed straight for home and our cosy accommodation at the Marlborough Vintners Hotel on Blenheim’s Golden Mile wine trail.

Dinner was a sensational five-course degustation dinner courtesy of the hotel’s new chef, French-born and trained Arnaud Mallet. The food was matched with local wines from the likes of Saint Clair, Clos Henri and Brancott Estate.

The next day we rented the hotel’s bikes to explore the area, first dropping into the excellent artisan hub of The Vines Village across the road for a tasting of the bike-themed Golden Mile Brewing craft beer range.

The Village is great for kids, with a mini sports ground (complete with rugby and soccer goal posts) and playground out the back.

Our final stop on the bike was also beer-themed, at Moa Brewing Co.’s tasting room, where we sampled some of their more inventive brews (rhubarb and apple cider, cherry sour and milk chocolate stout) while admiring the burgers, po’ boys and tacos emerging from Sandy’s Grilled Meat Company, the food truck housed in a 1974 converted Land Cruiser often found onsite.

There was only just enough time to return the bikes to the hotel before heading to the airport.

We’ll have to save the wineries on the Golden Mile and its surrounds for next time.

Held at the Ashburton Sports Hall on Tancred Street the event attracted a field of 30 youngsters ranging in age from four through to 16. Dynamic’s athletes were joined by budding young trampolinists from Christchurch’s ICE Trampoline Sports, Olympia Gymnastic Sports and Christchurch School of Gymnastics for the event. Dynamic’s head coach Nicci Glanville said they competed in three events – trampoline, double mini (a really long trampoline you ran at) and synchronised trampolining. “Trampolining is quite new to Ashburton and we wanted to break into the big world and this is our way of doing it,” Glanville said. For many of the athletes, it was their first trampolining competition. Six judges from Christchurch were on hand to cast an eye over the performances.

The Philippines national basketball team has withdrawn from the Asian Games as the fallout continues following their on-court brawl with Australia.

Basketball’s governing body in the Philippines said it needed to focus its resources towards appealing FIBA sanctions for their involvement in the incident earlier this month. FIBA suspended 10 Philippines players for a total of 35 international games while two coaches were also sanctioned and fines of $A337,000 were handed out.

Betting claims rock NZ basketball The National Basketball League (NBL) have launched an investigation into allegations of illegal betting on the results of several games in the competition this season.

NBL chairman and Basketball New Zealand chief executive Iain Potter confirmed that on multiple occasions over the past months, the NBL has asked the TAB to investigate alleged suspicious betting activity in NBL games.

The latest game which Potter has confirmed the league will be looking into is a clash from

last Friday between the Taranaki Mountain Airs and Auckland’s Supercity Rangers in New Plymouth.

The Herald on Sunday has learned from several sources that the finish to the game raised eyebrows among spectators and officials.

With just two seconds remaining on the clock, a shot from the Airs reduced the Rangers’ lead to nine points – 94-85.

While teams would traditionally run out the clock when up by a hefty margin with little time left, the Rangers took a timeout, and

on the resulting inbounds play, hit a three-pointer on the buzzer to win by 12 points.

One of the popular options available to bet on at the TAB is for a team to win by 11 points or more.

The Rangers’ last-second shot to make it a 12-point victory sparked scenes of celebration among the Rangers players, according to Mountain Airs coach Trent Adam.

“I found [it] unusual to be calling a timeout in that situation of the game.

“They then ran a play and hit

a three-point shot on the buzzer which invoked a lot of celebration from the Rangers players, which I thought was sort of unusual, to be running the score up in that situation,” Adam said.

Rangers coach Jeff Green vehemently denied any wrongdoing by his team.

“There is nothing to hide. We know we are not allowed to bet on our league,” he said.

“We all know the situation. The whole team. Everyone knows the rules. You get caught, you take the consequences.”

According to Green, the timeout was called to give a departing player the final shot.

“We wanted to give him the chance to leave on a high.”

Green was unaware of any investigation by the NBL. “I have no worries whatsoever.

You coach accordingly to some of those things and I make no apologies for calling that timeout.”

Potter says the investigation will include the TAB looking into the game to determine whether anything untoward took place.

Home semi for Hampstead

A 3-2 win over Cambridge on Saturday has secured Hampstead the right to host a home semi-final in the Mid/South Canterbury senior women’s hockey competition.

Heading into their match against Cambridge in Timaru on Saturday Hampstead were top of the table – the same spot they’d been in all season with two draws the closest anyone had come to beating them – and they knew one more win from their final two matches should have been enough to give them a home semi-final.

But Cambridge weren’t going to be an easy opposition.

They had been the team hot on Hampstead’s heels all season in second spot on the table.

Hampstead coach Rex Turnbull said it was a tough battle, as expected, and despite being low on numbers his side held on for the win.

“We only had one sub, which didn’t help,” Turnbull said.

“It’s not an excuse but it would have been nice to have more fresh legs off the bench.”

Hannah Mowat scored two of her side’s goals and Sam Dalziel scored the other, while Courtney Cannan was player of the day.

Turnbull said Hampstead’s accuracy and composure slipped as they tired.

“They (Cambridge) would have taken some confidence out of the game, which is just what we didn’t want,” Turnbull said.

Hampstead would face Craighead in their final round robin match in Timaru this weekend, before the competition headed into finals.

Mid Canterbury’s other women’s team, Hampstead/Collegians, were also in action in Timaru on Saturday and they didn’t have such a good day at the office, going down 6-0 to Geraldine.

In the senior men’s competition, Wakanui also played in Timaru on Saturday and came away with a 7-2 win over Oamaru side Tainui.

Tainui gave Wakanui a severe wake-up call early in the match, scoring the opening goal, and it took 25 minutes before Wakanui landed the equaliser, thanks to Sam Bennett from a penalty corner.

Wakanui went ahead 2-1 at half time courtesy of a Scott Marshall field goal, and three further goals – to James Wright, Sam Bennett and Hayden Sinclair – in the second half put them out to a 5-1 lead.

Tainui got one back, but Wakanui weren’t done, with Sinclair slotting two more goals to complete his hat-trick, and his team’s 7-2 win.

The win ensured that Wakanui were also still on the top of the men’s points table with one game to go before finals.

They will take on Cambridge in the final round and the team on top of the table heading into finals would win the McCosker Trophy, and the team that came out on top at the end of the finals would win the Walker and Hall Shield.

Thomas on top in Tour de France Barring incidents and accidents, Geraint Thomas wore the yellow jersey into Paris this morning.

No longer merely a support rider for Chris Froome, the Welshman with Team Sky effectively sealed his first Tour de France title by protecting his lead in the time trial on the penultimate stage yesterday morning.

Thomas took an advantage of 1 minute, 51 seconds over Tom Dumoulin into the mostly ceremonial finish on the ChampsElysees this morning.

“It’s just overwhelming,” Thomas said.

“I didn’t think about it all race, and now suddenly I won the Tour.”

Dumoulin won the 20th stage by one second ahead of fourtime champion Froome, who leapfrogged Primoz Roglic into third place overall.

Thomas finished third in the stage, 14 seconds behind.

But that was more than enough with an advantage of more than two minutes at the start of the day.

“The strongest guy has won this Tour de France,” Froome said.

“Tomorrow, to stand up on the podium with G, it’s going to be a really proud moment for me.”

Thomas, known as “G,” was a support rider during Froome’s title rides but he became Sky’s undisputed leader when Froome cracked in the gruelling 17th stage through the Pyrenees.

Thomas and Froome have been together since their days on the small Barloworld team a decade ago.

“Because we’ve been teammates and friends for so long, it made it easier to communicate honestly,” Froome said.

“It was clear as soon as we hit the Alps that Geraint was in better physical condition than me.

“It was pretty simple, really.”

Wearing an all-yellow skin suit on a bike in the red, white and blue colors of the British flag, Thomas was the last rider to start.

In a few drops of rain, Thomas was quick to regain control when his wheel appeared to lock up coming around a tricky, tight corner early on.

Still, he was first at the two checkpoints before slowing in the final kilometres.

“I felt strong. I felt really good, actually.

“I heard I was up and maybe I was pushing it a bit hard on some of those corners,” Thomas said.

“Nico (Portal, Sky sports director) told me to relax, take it easy and just make sure I won the Tour. And that’s what I did.”

At the finish, Thomas embraced his wife, Sara Elen, as soon as he got off his bike.

“The last time I cried was when I got married,” Thomas said as he teared up.

Thomas is poised to become the third British rider – and first Welshman – to win the Tour after Bradley Wiggins and Froome.

“He was in the shape of his life,” Dumoulin said. “He didn’t make any mistakes. He was never put into trouble by anyone, in the mountains or anywhere – including by myself.”

Hesson’s ideas on new man The man to replace Mike Hesson as Black Caps coach should ideally be a New Zealander – that’s the view of the man himself.

Hesson finished his six-year tenure as New Zealand coach this week and confirmed that his preference – “no doubt’’ – would be for someone with “a real affinity to New Zealand”.

“Having skin in the game is important,” Hesson said.

“If you don’t have that you can pack up your stumps and go.

“When you have a role like this, you do have demands on your time, and you need to have something to fall back on. Whether it’s actually a New Zealander, or someone who resides in New Zealand, is irrelevant.”

New Zealand Cricket are in the process of sifting through their coaching options, with at least two New Zealanders, Gary Stead at Canterbury and Mark O’Donnell of Auckland, both with their hands up.

Hesson admitted that while he was an experienced cricket coach when he took on the job in 2012, “I was pretty naive around the demands of what the role would hold.

“I knew how to be a coach but not some of the subtleties around the international game.”

Apart from reaching the World Cup final in Melbourne in 2015, Hesson’s high and low memories are around test cricket.

The final day washout which deprived New Zealand of victory over South Africa in Hamilton early last year still stings; letting the West Indies off the hook after making 600 and having a 309-run lead at Dunedin in late 2013 was “pretty gutting” while the inaugural pink ball test in Adelaide in 2015 “will stick in the memory”.

Contrast that with New Zealand’s final test under Hesson, the knuckle-whitening draw against England in April which “encapsulated that every one in a team can make a major contribution to winning a test match”. That draw ensured a series victory.

Hesson said there was no one key ingredient in becoming a successful coach.

“It’s one of those jobs that’s hard to put down in bullet points.

“It’s not a matter of just being a technical coach or a man manager or running a programme. It’s a combination of many different things.”

He admitted: “I am a bit of a process-driven guy, and the beauty of any manager is getting a collective approach so everybody buys into what you’re trying to do.”

Hesson also admitted cricket was on his brain much of the time while he was coach.

“I fully immersed myself in the job and gave it everything.

“There were certainly times when I was at home, but wasn’t at home, thinking about the job.

You always get good feedback on that,” he quipped.

Southern will get the chance to defend Mid Canterbury Rugby’s Watters Cup after sealing their place in the final with a dramatic 48-40 win over Rakaia on Saturday.

After a first half that was all Southern at the Hinds Domain, the home side looked like they were going to cruise to a finals berth against a waiting Celtic side, but just like they did when the two sides met the week prior in their final round robin match, Rakaia came charging back.

Southern led 26-0 with halftime looming before Rakaia got on the board with a try, but Southern scored straight after the break to extend their lead to 33-7 and looked well in control.

With their season slipping away, Rakaia rallied, and Southern had no answers as the visitors went on a try-scoring spree and raced past them to take the lead for the first-time in the match, 35-33.

Traded tries and a Southern penalty saw the lead see-saw until Southern landed the knockout blow with a try with only a couple of minutes left to play, which took them out beyond a converted try, and win 48-40.

When the two sides met the week prior, it was Rakaia who won 48-24 after going on a simi-

lar second half scoring spree to Saturday’s.

The big difference though was that the week before they were down by just two at half-time, but on Saturday they were made to pay for their slow start which saw them with a 19-point deficit to pull back in the second half.

For Rakaia coach Wayne Foxcroft it was a disappointing way to end a long and often prosperous coaching career.

After 30 years of coaching, including the past eight years at the helm of Rakaia, Saturday’s match was his last.

Although disappointed with the loss, Foxcroft was proud of the fight his side had shown against a determined Southern side.

“They (Southern) wanted it more and they played better, but we showed great character to get back in there,” Foxcroft said.

The day hadn’t started well for Rakaia, with Southern’s Logan Bonnington charging down a Tom Hanham-Carter kick and chasing it up to score the day’s opening try barely a couple of minutes in, and further tries to Angus McKenzie, James Hastings and Jon Dampney saw the home side out to a 26-0 lead.

Rakaia scored a try through Andrew Letham to end the first-half, but Southern started the second half the way they started the first,

with a try to Bonnington.

With the game slipping away, Rakaia suddenly found a new gear.

A Doug Rushton try was followed by one to Timoci Nabakeke and another to Tom Blyth which put Rakaia just five points behind, at 33-28, and when Hanham-Carter ran in under the posts about 25 minutes in, the Rakaia faithful – after a quiet first-half – were suddenly in full voice.

Their side had taken the lead 35-33.

Southern’s Dalton Kannemeyer – who had missed just one conversion in the first half despite the challenging wind – missed a penalty attempt to give his side the lead back, but soon after the lead was theirs again, when McKenzie crossed for his second try.

Kannemeyer’s second miss of the afternoon meant Southern held a slender 38-35 lead, but it was short-lived, with Rakaia’s Leps Seitava stealing it back with his side’s fifth try of the half.

The see-saw continued with Kannemeyer landing a penalty to put his side back in front 40-41, but that wasn’t to be the telling blow.

That came with just a couple of minutes left on the clock when Southern’s Will MacKenzie scored what was to be the match winning try, with a dropped

ball in the lead-up being ruled knocked back, much to the despair of Rakaia’s supporters.

Southern coach Andrew Carr said the win was particularly special given the week Southern had experienced.

Hard hit by injuries in the past couple of weeks, Southern had just 14 fit players at training on Tuesday night, and 17 fit players on Thursday night.

They had to bring in four players from their B side to sit on the bench, but they had their own semi-final to play in Ashburton first, meaning they didn’t arrive until a good 20 minutes into the senior game.

Carr said at half-time he thought if his side was able to score first in the second half they should be able to win it.

They did score first, but as they had done so many times this season, they let Rakaia back in, giving away a steady stream of penalties in the second half.

“We seem to play pretty good footy for 40 minutes but it was the same as last week, we just couldn’t get our hands on the ball in that second half,” Carr said.

Southern’s win put them into the final next Saturday, where they would take on Celtic, and Carr knew his side wouldn’t be able to get away with only fronting for only half a game in Mid Canterbury Rugby’s big dance.

NSW Waratahs will have to stew on a last-round loss to the Brumbies that could ultimately have cost them a spot in the Super Rugby final.

By losing to the ACT team in Sydney the Waratahs didn’t have a home semi-final and instead had to make the gruelling trip to South Africa.

While Daryl Gibson’s side started in strong fashion yesterday to take a 14-0 lead after 10 minutes against the Lions in Johannesburg, the home team ran over the top of them to prevail 44-26.

Instead of travelling to Christchurch to play the Crusaders in the decider, the Waratahs will be left wondering how they let a team that didn’t play finals beat them when everything was on the line.

“Of course we always look back on the season and think what if?,” Gibson said.

“For our team we’ve had to battle all year to earn our way to this point with pretty much the same team week in, week out.

“I can forgive our guys for having a tough night (against the Brumbies), they were already in the quarters and achieved one of their goals. It’s certainly one thing we’ll look back on and go it could’ve been different.”

While disappointing to bow out to the Lions, NSW made more strides than almost anyone could have imagined this season.

After two years out of finals, including a disastrous 16th place finish in 2017, the Waratahs were clearly the standout Australian team.

Gibson wasn’t looking for excuses in the game against the Lions, which saw them struggle when substitute Damien Fitzpatrick was sin-binned only minutes after coming on in the second half.

The Lions capitalised on the Waratahs being a man down, scoring two tries to build a matchwinning lead.

Gibson also wasn’t interested in the altitude factor of playing at Ellis Park.

“It was a team yellow, the Lions had some good pressure on there,” Gibson said. “A tough one but the game is what it is and for us it was a bit of a turning point, the Lions capitalised well in that period. Credit to the Lions. I felt their scrum, lineout maul, at times was overpowering today and they thoroughly deserved the victory.”

Mo-unga’s masterpiece

By Christopher reive Crusaders captain Sam Whitelock yesterday summed up Richie Mo’unga’s importance to the team this season in five words: “Richie’s done it all year”.

The Crusaders No 10 was an absolute force in the side’s 30-12 win over the Hurricanes in their Super Rugby semi-final, orchestrating the offence like a puppeteer.

Opening the scoring for his side with a try off a slick show and go before adding a further 10 points off the tee, Mo’unga accounted for half of his team’s points, and his play with ball in hand was proving a handful for the Hurricanes defence.

Speaking after the win, Whitelock applauded the work of Mo’unga.

“He’s pretty quick over those first couple of steps.

“He’s pretty hard to keep up with,” Whitelock said.

The Crusaders’ win ensures the Super Rugby final will be played in Christchurch next weekend.

It will be the third time in the past four seasons that the decider will be in New Zealand, with the Hurricanes playing host to the big dance in 2015 and 2016.

“The boys really dug in.

“We knew it was going to take a whole 80 minute performance and we were spot on,” Whitelock said.

“We’d concentrated all week on us.

“I was really proud of the boys, they did what they said they would.”

Departing Hurricanes coach Chris Boyd says the Crusaders are in a class of their own in and has no doubt they’ll lock up a ninth Super Rugby crown.

The defending champion Crusaders will face South Africa’s Lions in a repeat of the 2017 decider.

Last year’s final was won 25-17 in Johannesburg.

This time it’s in Christchurch where the Crusaders have been a juggernaut for two years under coach Scott Robertston, winning all 19 games.

cal display from the red and black machine, snuffing the life out of the star-studded visitors with defensive muscle and clinical finishing.

Boyd felt helpless in his last game in charge before taking up the head role at English club Northampton.

His team lost the collisions and failed to match the control and spark provided by Mo’unga.

“At the end of the day, the Crusaders are probably, at the moment, with what they’ve got, 20 points better than any side,” Boyd told reporters.

“We just made little mistakes.

“They were relentless.

“They just kept putting us under pressure.

“It was just the constant pressure, you can’t relax anywhere.”

The Lions were a mixed bag in the regular season but have notched three handsome wins in Johannesburg to book their spot in a third straight final.

Captain Warren Whitely agreed his team will need to go to another level from their 44-26 semifinal victory over the NSW Waratahs if they are to claim a maiden title.

Playing the Crusaders in New Zealand is a true test of any team’s physical and mental qualities, he said, hopeful they’ve learned lessons from their two bridesmaid finishes.

“Decision making is key in a final,” he said.

“The set piece is going to be a massive battle.

“The Crusaders have a very strong pack but we’re looking forward to it.

“What a challenge.”

Stars get up to stun the Steel The Northern Stars have finished their disappointing ANZ Premiership season on a high after claiming a stunning 65-59 comeback victory over the Southern Steel yesterday.

Although the Stars were already out of contention for the playoffs, they played with passion and pride to close their season in style.

The Stars move into fifth on the ladder and could avoid the wooden spoon depending on the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic’s result against the Mainland Tactix tonight.

Meanwhile, the Steel have undoubtedly suffered a dent to their confidence ahead of the elimination finals next Wednesday night – where they will meet either the Tactix or Northern Mystics depending on their respective results.

Stars sharpshooter Maia Wilson was in sublime form under the hoop and found good connection with her captain Grace Kara, who led her attacking unit from the front.

Meanwhile, the Steel were without their top shooter Jen O’Connell, who was ruled out of the clash due to illness, leaving Te Paea Selby-Rickit at goal shoot with Olivia Bates at goal attack.

The relatively fresh shooting duo struggled to gather momentum under the pressure of leading Stars defender Kate Burley, but their overall accuracy saw the Steel draw level in the opening quarter at 15 apiece.

Steel captain Wendy Frew led her side with passion and tenacity while midcourter Gina Crampton found an effortless connection with her shooters from the circle edge as the Steel took a narrow three-goal at halftime.

However, it wasn’t enough to dampen the home side’s spirit as the Northerners returned to the court hungrier than ever.

Suddenly storming ahead, the Stars took firm control of the final quarters while the Steel struggled to keep up.

The Stars’ attacking unit was in fluid form across the court while stellar intercepts from Burley ignited the noisy home crowd.

With nothing but pride to play for, the home side held their ground to take the win, and a chance of avoiding the ignominy of last place.

Stars captain Grace Kara said it was nice to end the season on a high and she believed the result left some hope for next year’s side.

“It’s really nice to be able to reward the fans and the girls for all their hard work throughout the season,” Kara said.

“We saw glimpses of what we were capable of throughout the season and I think that we played some really good netball tonight and it really reflected on the scoreline.”

The Tactix will play the Magic tonight at Hamilton’s Claudelands Arena in a crucial match that could determine whether the Mainland side make the playoffs.

Should the Tactix defeat the Magic and the Mystics lose to the Central Pulse, the Tactix will advance to the elimination final against the Steel.

But if both the Tactix and Mystics win their final fixtures this week, the final playoff will be decided by goal percentage.

As the Mystics currently hold a 1.62 per cent lead in that tiebreaker, the Tactix’s scoreline tonight could become the deciding factor.

Taufua’s season over Jordan Taufua will miss the Super Rugby final after suffering a broken arm during the Crusaders’ 30-12 win over the Hurricanes. Crusaders coach Scott Robertson confirmed that Taufua will require surgery after breaking a bone in his arm in the first half of the semi-final.

The blindside flanker will likely be replaced by Wallaby international Pete Samu for the final against the Lions in Christchurch next week.

“Unfortunately for me that’s my season on the field done,” Taufua wrote on Instagram.

Gardner gets the final Rising Australian official Angus Gardner has been handed the plum appointment of refereeing the Super Rugby final. Gardner’s performances through the season and his communication sklills have earned widespread praise from players and head coaches, with the latter having input into referee selections for the finals series.

The 33-year-old official made his debut at Super Rugby level in 2012 and has controlled 60 matches – 13 of them this year. Gardner handled his first test in 2016 and has been appointed to control 13 internationals.

The dogged Kangaroos ran away with it in the second half in the 12.9.81 to 6.5.41 victory on Sunday afternoon against an Eagles side missing Josh Kennedy and Luke Shuey to injury. North Melbourne doubled West Coast’s inside 50s - 38 to 16 during a scrappy first half but managed only a 34-31 lead at halftime. Record in the pool Kathleen Baker has set a world record in winning the 100-metres backstroke at the US national swimming championships.

The 21-year-old Olympian won in 58.00 seconds in Irvine, California yesterday, lowering the mark of 58.10 set by Kylie Masse of Canada at the world championships in Budapest last year. Baker’s performance was the more remarkable because she has long had to deal with Crohn’s disease, a condition which causes inflammation of the digestive tract that can lead to abdominal pain, severe diarrhea, fatigue and weight loss. First diagnosed at age 13, she revealed that battle during the 2016 Rio Olympics where she earned a silver medal in the 100m backstroke.

Headbutt ‘turning point’

NSW coach Brad Fittler has a simple solution for the NRL’s sin bin dawdlers – sent them off for the rest of the match. There have been a record amount of sin-binnings this season as referees crack down on ruck infringements and off-sides by defending teams close to their line.

But Fittler says he thinks players are regarding a 10-minute stint in the bin as a “badge of honour” and milking every second of their long slow trudge off the field as they give their team more time to recover and regroup. “I’d give them a warning to speed up, then send them off, simple as that.”

Dillian Whyte has beaten Joseph Parker by unanimous decision to take a step forward in his dream to be a world heavyweight boxing champion.

Whyte had accepted the risky fight in an attempt to force a rematch with Anthony Joshua or a challenge at WBC king Deontay Wilder.

British brawler Whyte may never be a more worthy challenger after his win at The O2 Arena in which he barely made the final bell.

A heavy knockdown in the final round and his exhaustion left the 30-year-old struggling to defend himself against former WBO champion Parker.

For Parker, there are no excuses.

And yet a headbutt from Whyte in the second round which put Parker on the canvas for the first time in his career is being seen by his camp as a significant mistake from referee Ian John Lewis, who also warned his fellow Englishman about roughhouse tactics at least four times but failed to deduct a point.

Parker was put down twice at the O2 Arena – the first in the second round and the second time in the ninth, the latter with a legal left hook.

In the third and fourth rounds he didn’t look himself as he struggled to regain the momentum of

his early successful efforts, and there is little doubt Lewis could have been stronger on Whyte for pulling down, trying to push through the ropes and pawing with an open glove.

Trainer Kevin Barry said of the round two controversy: “It was a round we were winning.

“It went from a 10-9 round to us to a 10-8 round to Dillian.

“I did my best.

“Dillian came forward,” he added.

“He said … ‘I’ll caution him and take points off him.’ I said ‘really?’

“We know he’s a dirty fighter and those are his tactics.

“They worked for him.

“Of course he should have had points deducted – 100 per cent.”

Whyte’s promoter Eddie Hearn said: “It was a left hook and then a headbutt.”

When challenged on it, Whyte was in no doubt it was a legal punch: “You’re not cheating me, you’re cheating yourself, my friend,” he told his questioner.

The drama comes after the controversy of Parker’s fight against Joshua in April when the Italian referee refused to let the pair engage on the inside.

“The headbutt was probably a genuine mistake,” Higgins said.

“In the Joshua fight I think the referee consciously favoured the other side and tried to help him.

Tommyra on track Matamata trainer Toby Autridge firmly believes he has a very talented jumper on his hands after Tommyra picked up his second hurdle success from just three starts at Rotorua on the weekend.

The handy flat performer commenced his career in the South Island where he won three times before being transferred to Moira and Kieran Murdoch’s Pukekohe Park operation where he won once from fifteen attempts.

Sent to Autridge for education as a jumper the rising sevenyear-old won on debut over the fences at Hastings before finishing a meritorious fourth behind Monarch Chimes in the Hawkes’ Bay Hurdle (3100m).

“He has always appealed as a very good jumper from the day we first got him,” said Autridge.

“He has a lot of respect for the fences and I think he has only really made one mistake which was in a trial before he had his first jumping start.

“He won his maiden easily enough before acquitting himself well in top company at Hastings, so he has made really good progress so far.”

Autridge was quietly confident heading into Saturday’s race although he was mindful of the calibre of his opposition.

That confidence was well rewarded as Tommyra travelled easily throughout before outfinishing race favourite Banbury Lad in the dash to the post after the final obstacle.

“He was up against some very promising hurdlers so I did have some reservations before the race,” he said.

In brief Atenartin takes Ryder Local Awapuni galloper Atenartin proved too good for his age group compatriots when he led all the way to take out the final black-type feature of the season, the Listed Courtesy Ford Ryder Stakes (1200m). Handled superbly by apprentice Danielle Hirini, the Showcasing youngster bounced nicely from a mid-field barrier to take up the running. Allowed to stride clear approaching the home turn by Hirini, Atenartin quickly put a space between himself and the chasing pack. The gelding never looked like stopping as he charged away to defeat Cambridge visitor Mexican Tycoon.

Home track double A winning double on her home turf at the weekend has completed a very satisfying season for Awapuni trainer Lisa Latta. Victories by Just You and Keep It Savvy lifted her total to 52 wins for the year with 10 of those achieved at stakes level.

The final tally placed her sixth on the National Trainer’s Premiership ladder, with Latta delighted with her body of work for the year.

“The changes we made have come together nicely so I’m really delighted with how it has all gone.”

“The second horse looks a real star of the future so to get the win is very satisfying.

“I do think this horse is going to be much better next year as they generally tend to improve a heap after their first jumps campaign.

“He is a real gentleman to work with, in fact he is so placid he lets the seven-year-old grandson of one of the owners catch him and

bring him from the paddock.

“With the attitude he has to the fences I can see him being a good prospect in some of the better races next year.”

In the meantime, Autridge will let his charge recover from his exertions before looking at the possibility of a start in the open hurdle event at Te Rapa on 25 August to round out his winter campaign.

The daughter of Mach Three swept on by her opponents with a scintillating lastto-first sprint reminiscent of her great granddam, Tigerish. She has a wee way to go yet to achieve the dizzy heights of the former star mare, who won nearly half a million dollars in the early 1990s for Pukekohe’s Pam and Lindsay Turner. But Pam Turner, who trains Tiger Swift, has an inkling that she just might be a bit special too.

BY MURRAY WENZEL The New Zealand Warriors have missed a chance to nail down an NRL finals spot as Gold Coast ran away 36-12 winners at home.

The Titans turned it on in a five-try second half yesterday afternoon to get one back against a Warriors side that had won their past seven games at Cbus Super Stadium.

It may have come too late to save their own season but the Titans’ razzle-dazzle has at least given the Wests Tigers hope.

The result left the ninth-placed side just two wins adrift of the Warriors, who missed a golden chance to consolidate their first finals appearance since 2011 against a team they’d beaten in 14 of their past 15 contests.

Their dominance looked set to continue when the visitors turned the momentum to lead 12-8 at halftime, only for the Titans to produce some of their finest football under first-year coach Garth Brennan.

First, a Brenko Lee linebreak put Anthony Don over before the centre juggled a sharp intercept to jag one for himself.

When AJ Brimson backed up Mitch Rein’s dart from dummy-half it was 26-12 and the Warriors looked out on their feet.

Winger Phillip Sami then capped a fine game with a wicked step on Roger TuivasaSheck for the first of his two late tries.

The Titans survived a video review for obstruction as Konrad Hurrell opened the game with his first try since round one.

A week after celebrating a division two championship win, Mid Canterbury United have started the Mainland Football division two cup competition with a resounding 9-1 win over Hornby.

Knowing Hornby were a tough side that would battle for the full 90 minutes, Mid Canterbury United elected to go with the wind in the first half at the Ashburton Domain after winning the toss – a tactical move they hoped would rattle the visitors in the first game of the knock-out competition.

The move paid off, with Mid Canterbury starting strong and using their wingers Darren Desmond and Jordon Lugg to full effect, causing havoc with the Hornby defence.

Desmond scored Mid Canterbury’s first goal direct from a corner and it ended up being the first of four goals he would net for the game.

Another corner opened Lugg’s goal scoring and he finished the game with two goals to his name.

Hornby kept at them and tried catching Mid Canterbury on the counter attack.

It was a tactic that worked after some sloppy defending from a backline which was otherwise solid all game, ended with Hornby being awarded a penalty which they finished despite goalkeeper Marty Fitzgerald getting a hand to it.

Mid Canterbury were ahead just 2-1 and this season Mid Canterbury hasn’t liked close games, so they stepped it up to another

gear and scored two more before half time, one to Desmond and the other to Luke Martin.

At half time it was 4-1 to Mid Canterbury and coach Fitzgerald told his team to continue pushing in the second half and play even better football.

His wise words worked as Mid Canterbury went on to dominate the second half.

Desmond added to his goal tally early on by scoring two more well-taken goals and Martin and Jordon Lugg added their second goals for the day.

Up 8-1, John Moses was given the opportunity to play striker for the last 15 minutes and after some good work from the ever-present centre mid pairing of Stanley Poki Poki and Ed Kettle, Moses got his goal with a well taken finish.

Mid Canterbury United Under 17 player Nick Eden also made his senior debut and had an outstanding game.

With a 9-1 win to their names, adding to their already impressive record for this season which saw them take the division two championship title in a canter, coach Fitzgerald gave the day’s player of the day title to the whole team due to the solid all around performance they produced.

Meanwhile, in Methven, Methven FC Senior As were in the same boat.

They had already secured the Mainland Football division four championship title and were looking to keep to their winning ways against the Selwyn United FC B team.

They did just that, sending the

visitors home with their tails between their legs and a 7-0 loss on the board.

Mid Canterbury United and Methven FC Senior As were both on the move next season, with winning their respective championships also earning them promotion to the next grade.

That means that next season Mid Canterbury United will contest Mainland Football’s division one competition, while the Methven FC Senior As will move up to division three.

In other football action on Saturday Mid Canterbury United’s 17th grade side were also playing at home in the Mainland Football 17th grade division one competition against FC Twenty 11 17 Red, but they eventually went down 3-1.
