Allenton Dairy and Lotto owners Kunal and Divya Saluja are world famous in New Zealand as they become the centre of a documentary maker’s attention. The couple are among hardworking faces behind the humble Kiwi dairy, set to star in The Changing Face of the New Zea-
land Dairy on Prime TV. Kunal is among dairy owners hailing from the Punjab people of India. They and the Gujarat people were among the first dairy owners in New Zealand as they migrated here in the late 1800s to early 1900s, initially selling fruit and vegetables from wheelbarrows.
Producer/director Melanie Rakena is looking at both the historical background and future of New Zealand dairies. “We are examining how something that’s a New Zealand icon has come from an Indian base,” Rakena said. Allenton Dairy and Lotto would be among just four hero dairies to feature.
At these dairies the film crew is spending more than one day getting footage of what goes on in the shop and behind the counter. Rakena said she chose the Allenton business as it offered a contrast to the others, servicing a rural town community. And the Salujas could offer a rural-versus-city perspective, as they had operated dairies in
Auckland in the past. While proud of his people’s association with the development of dairies in New Zealand, Kunal is himself a later arrival.
