Police driving warning BY DAISY HUDSON

DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ

Ashburton police have received calls from motorists regarding dangerous driving on Mid Canterbury highways, prompting them to remind drivers to take care during the remainder of the holiday period. The warning comes after several horror crashes on Canter-

bury roads over the weekend. The holiday road toll stood at seven last night, with three of those fatalities occurring in Canterbury. Closer to home, Ashburton police attended a crash on State Highway One, north of Hinds, on Christmas Day, after a vehicle crashed through a stock fence.

The driver was treated at Ashburton Hospital. Ashburton police Sergeant Janine Bowden said police had received “a number of calls from motorists regarding driver behaviour”. These included complaints about following distances, overtaking manoeuvres, people texting or using cellphones while

driving, excessive speed, and wobbly caravans. For police, the key message was ensuring people respected others on the road and got safely to their destination, Ms Bowden said. With new changes to drink driving legislation taking effect recently, drink driving is also a major focus for police during

the holiday period. “With festive things in mind locally, ensuring people sort out their designated sober driver before going out or know how they are getting home,” Ms Bowden said. Jamie Oliver ‘turned down hobbit role’ British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver says he was offered the role of a hobbit in exchange for cooking director Peter Jackson a birthday meal, but rejected the chance due to work commitments. The British cook told US actress Kate Hudson about the deal with the Lord of the Rings director on his new Channel 4 show, Jamie And Jimmy’s Friday Night Feast. “The worst thing that happened to me was that I got phoned up by the exec producer and asked did I want to go and cook for Peter Jackson’s birthday, the big birthday,” he said. “And if I did, they would fly me over and I could be a hobbit in the film. But I was working, I couldn’t get out of it. I really wanted to do it,” he added. “I would have got right into it as well.” he said.

Stolen shelter reappears

NEWS RETROSPECT OPINION WORLD BUSINESS RURAL YOUR PLACE SPORT PUZZLES FAMILY NOTICES TELEVISION

A Northland bus shelter which became world-famous in New Zealand when it was stolen this month, has been found abandoned on a roadside in South Hokianga. The steel and perspex shelter was wrenched from its base at the corner of Waimate North Rd and Te Ahu Ahu Rd, inland from the Bay of Islands, and loaded on to a trailer on the night of December 6. A car towing the missing bus shelter was stopped that night by Kaikohe police but at that stage it had not been reported stolen. However, police did take the vehicle’s details. The heat appears to have become too much for the thieves because the bus shelter has reappeared, somewhat battered, beside Horeke Rd. Waimate North woman Philippa Moor, one of the residents who originally applied for the bus shelter, heard about its reappearance on December 19 via social media and, rather than risk it being stolen again, enlisted a group of locals to collect it. The rather sorry looking shelter has been returned to Totalspan’s yard, where it will be re-clad and returned to its rightful place in time for the 2015 school year. It was one of hundreds around the country donated by Totalspan as part of its Undercover Kids programme. Two Horeke men have been charged in relation to the theft and will appear in the Kaikohe District Court.

After being with partner Craig Mitchell for eight years, Ms Smythe had all but given up on a marriage proposal, but when she looked up into the sky and saw a “Deb Marry Me” message towed behind a plane about 10.30am yesterday she said ‘yes’. “Someone said ‘well, what do you say?’ and I was like ‘I guess I better say yes’.” The pair have a long history, having been together for four years when she was about 18, before he “wooed” her back from Blenheim eight years ago. After the proposal, the pair celebrated with a bottle of champagne.

Who is granny? A mystery letter, containing a Christmas card and photos, addressed only to “granny”, has perplexed the coastal village of Karitane since it arrived at the local store just before Christmas. Store owner-operator Sue O’Neill is keen to get to the bottom the mystery and so has put the contents of the letter up next to the counter of the shop, which is also the village’s post office. So far no one has recognised the card and photos of the “Mundy” family, so granny’s identity remains unsolved. Ms O’Neill said she displayed the contents of the letter because it did not have a return address, meaning it would be lost forever if it was sent back to New Zealand Post. “Obviously, [the Mundys] have gone to a lot of trouble to get some nice photos for granny and we want her [to get them]. “We would love to find granny if we can,” she said. Anyone who knows the identity of the Mundys can contact the store on 03 465 7331.

■ CHRISTMAS SPENDING

■ HOSTAGE SITUATION

Festive cheer for retailers

Arrest after hostage drama

By Daisy HuDson

daisy.h@theguardian.co.nz

Mid Canterbury shoppers were out in force over Christmas, helping local retailers to a bumper festive trading period. Figures released by Paymark show Canterbury’s economy received a multi-million dollar boost during the holiday season, thanks to bargain hunters and last-minute gift buyers. December is traditionally a busy time for both shoppers and retailers, but Mid Cantabrians dug extra deep on two of the year’s biggest trading days, Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. According to Paymark, which processes about 75 per cent

of New Zealand’s electronic transactions and card spending, shoppers in the region made the most of last-minute preChristmas sales, spending up large on Christmas Eve. Spending in Canterbury on Christmas Eve jumped from just under $26 million in 2013 to over $29 million this year, an increase of 13.6 per cent. Boxing Day business was also on the rise, with spending up 6.2 per cent from 2013 to $14.8 million. For Ashburton Paper Plus owner Terry McNab, this year’s holiday season brought plenty of festive cheer. Mr McNab told the Guard-

ian last week that he was “rapt” with the level of sales over the Christmas period, despite a quiet Boxing Day. Hospitality workers in the district also had a very merry Christmas, according to Hospitality New Zealand Canterbury Executive rural vice-president Trevor den Baars. Mr den Baars, who owns the Blue Pub and the Brown Pub in Methven, said the hot summer weather over the holiday period also had a hand in steady business. “The weather always plays a big part in it, there’s been lots of people going out for drives and stopping for lunch,” he said.

“And they were well behaved, too.” Mr den Baars said he had spoken to licencees from Ashburton, who had experienced similar success over Christmas. “They’re certainly saying the same, that it was nothing outrageous but it was steady, which is what we need,” he said. Shoppers across the country spent a staggering $404 million on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day. Records also tumbled as lastminute shoppers set a new milestone by spending $263.5 million on December 24, which was an increase of 10.5 per cent from 2013.

■ CHRISTMAS ADVENTURE

Spending Christmas at the North Pole By Daisy HuDson

daisy.h@theguardian.co.nz

While Mid Cantabrians enjoyed a sunny Christmas Day, one Methven woman woke up on Christmas morning to one metre of snow and -35 degree temperatures. A desire to experience a white Christmas led Erica Dynes to Kiruna, Sweden - otherwise known as the North Pole. Instead of barbecues and backyard cricket, Miss Dynes and her fellow travellers, Julie Cox of Ashburton, her boyfriend Keiran Stuart, and Ashleigh Ridge of Methven, spent the holiday husky dog sledding in a Swedish forest. She also fed reindeer, went snow-mobiling, and saw the Northern Lights. Miss Dynes said spending Christmas on the other side of the world was an unusual experience. “Christmas in the North Pole couldn’t have been any more opposite to a Christmas at home in Methven,” she said.

“There was no backyard cricket, no family or no daylight.” As Scandinavians do not celebrate Christmas on Christmas day, the travellers were also lacking a few home comforts on the big day. “We played cards in our hotel room, went for a stroll round the town for as long as we could handle the temps and drank a few ciders,” Miss Dynes said. “We didn’t get our usual Christmas lunch as the shops were shut, we relied on our buns with ham and cheese we had taken from breakfast - two between four people.” The adventure is far from over for the intrepid Kiwi, who will see in the New Year in Norway before travelling on to Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Italy and France. However, despite her Scandinavian adventure, Miss Dynes will spend Christmas under the New Zealand sun in 2015. “As amazing as a white Christmas was, I don’t think I could handle waking up to -38 again for a while,” she said.

Methven woman Erica Dynes gets the full white Christmas experience as she feeds reindeer at the North Pole.

NZ offers to help in search for missing plane New Zealand will offer assistance in the search for missing AirAsia flight QZ8501. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Mfat) said: “Our thoughts are with the families of those on board the missing AirAsia flight as they wait for news.

“The New Zealand Government has offered assistance with the search for the missing plane.” A ministry spokeswoman declined to specify what form that assistance would take, saying she was “unable to provide further details at this time”.

Mfat also confirmed there were no indications any New Zealanders were aboard the missing flight, which lost contact with air traffic control while travelling from Indonesia to Singapore on Sunday. Flight QZ8501 disappeared at about 12.16pm (NZ time), a

short time after the pilot asked to deviate from the flight path due to bad weather. It took off from Surabaya on Sunday at 11.30am (NZ time), and was scheduled to land at Singapore’s Changi Airport at 1.30pm (NZ time). - NZME

By JoHn Weekes A cool-headed shopkeeper has described the moments an agitated intruder grabbed a knife and sparked a hostage situation in a busy seaside holiday town. Bob Patel, owner of Four Square in Paihia, Northland, was working away when the incident unfolded yesterday. A dozen customers and six staff members, including Mr Patel, were in the supermarket when a heavyset man entered at about 10.25am. Some agitated guy thought his life was under threat from somebody outside,” Mr Patel said. The man’s outburst was perplexing but staff treated him seriously. “Whether it was something in his head, or it actually was, we can’t say,” Mr Patel said. “He wanted a safe place and he wanted specific police officers to attend to his case.” The man, who Mr Patel estimated was 5’11” tall and weighed about 120kg, moved about the store before grabbing a knife, probably from near the shop’s produce section. “Of course, we can’t tackle him because he was far more powerful than us to grapple,” Mr Patel said. “He asked us to let everybody get out of the shop because he was wielding a knife...We kept him at bay and told everybody to get out, just go out, don’t worry.” Mr Patel said he knew he had to stay calm. He did not know the man but locals told him he had moved into the neighbourhood recently, perhaps a few months ago. The man appeared to know, and possibly trust, some specific Kerikeri officers. He complied with the man’s requests to keep the shop’s doors closed. Mr Patel said the man allowed him to go to a nearby police station “to see if there were any cops coming in, because he wanted to see them”. Mr Patel said the man held the knife to a shop worker’s throat for up to 20 minutes before the situation was resolved. Police said a 40-year-old man was arrested. One News reported he was charged with kidnapping and with wounding with reckless disregard. - NZME

The New Year period is a busy time for many - and animals need a break too. Owners of The Purr-fect Cattery, Charlotte Hill and Dave Hormann, said a large number of felines were currently residing at their cattery – 33 to be precise. Miss Hill said it is not unusual for them to be busy over the New Year period and often

cats stayed with them for seven to 10 days. Owning a cattery is a family affair for Miss Hill and Mr Hormann, their two sons, Hunter, 4, and Heath, 18-months-old, love to help out as much as they can. “Hunter gets quite attached, but he’s allergic so I have to be careful,” Miss Hill said. The cattery has been open for five years and throughout the year the numbers of cats in residence range from 10 to 15.

“When we bought [the house] the cattery was closed and we started it up again.” She said her favourite part of running a cattery was the interaction with people and their beloved pets. It does impact on the time the family can spend at home, said Miss Hill, but it comes with the territory. “We took our first family holiday in five years, in October.” Miss Hill said the hardest part is not looking after the

cats themselves, but the cleaning – before and after the felines arrive. “It’s a big job [in] summertime you get a lot of fur.” Ashburton Boarding Kennels and Cattery also had a great number of animals residing with them over the busy period and were nearly fully booked for the holidays by mid-October. Owner Rowena Stanton said the kennels and cattery were booked up with 30 small dogs, 30 big dogs and 40 cats.

Bruce Coker, 49, died last Tuesday after suffering a fatal head injury. He was discovered lying unconscious in Rossiter Street, Linden, Tawa, on the previous Saturday night. Police officers investigating his death - under Operation Leo - yesterday named Chance Slade Rameka, 21, as a person of interest in the inquiry. Rameka has several arrest warrants to his name issued by the Gisborne District Court and the Porirua District Court, police said. - NZME

An 840ha coastal farm dogged by decades of controversy has been bought by a Far North iwi to ensure the land is never lost again. Te Runanga o Te Rarawa has purchased Whangape Station, an isolated and ruggedly beautiful farm bordered by the Whangape Harbour and the Tasman Sea. The price is understood to have been in the millions. The station will now be known as Whakakoro after its sacred mountain. The land has deep significance to Maori – it was from Whakakoro that the ancestor Ueoneone summoned a mystical manu (bird) to travel to Tainui and return with Reipai and Reitu, from whom local hapu Ngati Haua and their Ngapuhi neighbours are descended. The station has been embroiled in controversy for many years but Te Rarawa’s purchase, which was finalised on Friday, should consign those unhappy times to history. - NZME

■ COMMUNITY HONOURS

Working for his community By Sue NewmaN

Sue.n@theguardian.co.nz

John Moore is a modest man; the last person he likes talking about is himself. And while he might have recently been awarded one of the Ashburton District’s community honours, he wasn’t keen to talk about the work that earned him the accolade. Accompanying his nomination was a brief outline of the role he had played in the Mayfield community when he achieved what the council and residents had not been able to achieve – he funded a brand new well in his village to ensure Mayfield residents would have a good quality water supply. The rural town’s water issues were well documented and the supply had fallen short of expectations for years. A shallow well was drilled in the late 1980s but it never met residents’ needs with water quality and the supply itself disappointing on all fronts. In July 1998 the quality of the

village’s water was so bad the school called in the army with water tankers. That resulted in a filtration upgrade and while there may have been some improvement, the fundamental problems remained – a supply that was short on quality and often failed. By 2005 residents were fed up. Many were filling containers with water when they travelled to other parts of the district and everyone was unhappy. Again, the district council responded, with plans discussed for a supply upgrade. That was 2006. By 2009 nothing had changed but in 2011 the council approved spending $105,000 on upgrading the village’s supply. Approving the money didn’t mean residents and the council agreed on the best fix. Somewhere along the way John Moore decided to find his own solution, drilling a well himself that gave the village a supply option. Debate then started on the potential to transfer ownership

of the resource consent from Mr Moore’s hands to council hands. It was to prove a difficult deal to strike but Mayfield residents finally had what they’d been asking for, for years – a water supply that met modern day standards. But eventually a deal was done and Mayfield has a town supply that comes from a 119 metre deep bore and is pumped through a treatment plant into eight storage tanks. Booster pumps then pressurise the water into the main reticulation to service customers. That improved water supply was largely due to John Moore’s determination and his generosity. He’s a man with his heart in the community he has lived in for 77 years. He started Mayfield Transport 32 years ago and over those years has volunteered his own time and his trucks and machinery for events all over the district. He was one of the recipients of the Ashburton District Council’s 2014 community honours.

2014 a rollercoaster year for Goodhew By Daisy HuDson

daisy.h@theguardian.co.nz

For many people in Mid Canterbury, 2014 was a year of extreme highs and extreme lows. That was especially true for Rangitata MP Jo Goodhew. From the triumph of the general election to the tragedy of the Ashburton Winz shootings, 2014 was a rollercoaster of emotions for Ms Goodhew. The 2014 election was a high point for the MP, who beat Labour candidate Steve Gibson by a majority of 13,152 votes to win her fourth straight term. “The election was a huge honour on many fronts,” she said. “It was a tough campaign but election day was a real highlight, and I’m really humbled that I’ve had such an overwhelming message from the voters that they’re confident I can do a good job for

them.” However it was not all plain sailing, as the scandal of Dirty Politics engulfed the campaign. Ms Goodhew said she was disappointed the campaign was not “a contest of ideas and policies”. “Even when I was with the Prime Minister announcing a forestry policy, I got one question on that and all of the rest of the questions for some 20 minutes were on Dirty Politics,” she said. “To me it didn’t seem to be about New Zealand’s future, and I think the voters got sick of it.” However, the excitement of retaining her seat was a far cry from just a few weeks earlier, when tragedy struck part of her electorate. “That was certainly a low moment,” Ms Goodhew said of the Winz shootings on September 1,

where two women were killed. “I got the phone call when I was visiting a rest home in Timaru, and my stomach just plummeted. “There was a fair degree of fear and anxiety.” Ms Goodhew said despite the grief and sadness, there were high points during the aftermath of the tragedy. “I observed a community reach out to each other, and found myself trying to do the same thing in order to support them,” she said. “So that did give me a real sense of pride, to represent an area that could dig so deep to support each other.” After such a busy year, Ms Goodhew was looking forward to a quiet Christmas with family before setting her sights on 2015.

Police have confirmed that a man attacked at an Auckland motel died of head injuries. The investigation into the death of Ihaia Gillman-Harris, 54, continued yesterday and a post-mortem examination was carried out which confirmed he died of blunt force trauma to the head. Mr Gillman-Harris died in hospital after being violently assaulted at the Ascot Epsom Motel on Saturday morning. Police are hunting for two men who checked in with Mr Gillman-Harris about 8am on Saturday. They were captured on the motel’s CCTV system and appeared to be younger, wearing baseball caps and hoodies. They were later seen leaving the mo-

tel in Mr Gillman-Harris’s blue Range Rover Vogue shortly before Mr Gillman-Harris approached motel staff asking for help. Police would not comment yesterday on whether any weapons were used in the attack but continued to appeal for more information about the two men seen leaving the motel room. “We have received a lot of information from members of the public regarding the identity of the two people shown on CCTV, as well as some important background on Mr Gillman-Harris’s life,” Detective Inspector Scott Beard said. “We’ll be looking to put all this information together in the next stage of the investigation.” - NZME

■ BAY OF PLENTY CRASH

Second person dies after crash A second person has died following a collision with a tanker truck in Bay of Plenty on Sunday. The truck and a Volkswagen Golf collided near Paengaroa, at the intersection of State Highway 2 and Wilson Road around 8am. The car was turning right, out of Wilson Road to travel south on SH2, and collided with the truck, which was travelling north, police said. There were three men and two women in the car at the time. Four were trapped inside the wreckage. The driver of the Golf, a 30-year-old Indian man from Rotorua died at the

scene of the crash on Sunday, Western Bay of Plenty road policing Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said. Another 31-year-old Indian man from Rotorua travelling in the car suffered critical injuries in the crash and died at Waikato Hospital at 11.20pm on Sunday night. Two female passengers in the car remain in a critical condition. A third man suffered minor injuries. The names of those involved in the crash have not yet been released. The tanker driver escaped without injury and was receiving support from Victim Support, police said. - NZME

Eric Johnston will be the first to say 2014 has been a tough year. The father of two suffered a tragic loss in October, when he watched his home of more than a decade go up in flames. Mr Johnston and his daughter Shania were lucky to escape the blaze, which gutted the house Mr Johnston had rented for more than 12 years. Left with few possessions and living in a borrowed motor home, Mr Johnston was facing an uncertain future. However, the Mid Canterbury community rallied around him, providing him with clothing, food, bedding and other items. Two months on, and Mr Johnston is settling into his new home in Rakaia, where is staying rent free thanks to the generosity of Rakaia local David Chapman. Mr Chapman gave Mr Johnston the free use of his house until Christmas, and Mr Johnston said he will probably look to rent the house in 2015. “I think it could become home,” Mr Johnston said. “We’ll see how the new year goes.” The loss of his home devastated Mr Johnston, who is still coming to terms with what happened. “It still hasn’t really hit home,” he said. Fortunately for Mr Johnston, an overseas trip in the near future will help take his mind off it. He is beginning to make arrangements for a trip to his former home in the United States, which is being paid for by friends who live there. “It should be good, I’m really looking forward to it,” Eric Johnston is enjoying settling into his new home in Rakaia with his beloved dog Spook. ■ MANUKAU HARBOUR INCIDENT

Two die in Manukau Bar crossing Two people have died and three have been taken to hospital after a boat was swamped while crossing the Manukau Bar in Auckland yesterday. Emergency services were notified about 3.30pm after a passing boat located several people in the water. Police and Westpac Rescue

helicopters responded and a total of five people were recovered from the water with the assistance of the crew in the boat. The three survivors were were taken to Whatipu Beach where they were treated by Westpac Rescue Paramedics before two were flown to hospi-

tal and one taken by ambulance. It is believed that the victims were in a five-metre boat that was launched from Onehunga and was swamped while crossing the bar. They are understood to have been in the water for about two hours before they were spotted by the passing boat, police said.

No details of the people involved were available and their identities would not be released until next of kin had been informed. Police would investigate the deaths on behalf of the coroner. Police said emergency services were yet to locate the boat involved. - NZME

■ NEW ZEALANDER OF THE YEAR

Shortlist released for NZer of the year award The shortlist for the 2015 Kiwibank New Zealander of the Year Award has been released. Chief Judge Cameron Bennett said it was a tough job for the judging panel to create a shortlist of just 10 inspirational Kiwis from more than 230 nominations. “The calibre of nominations was very high,” he said. “Each of these individuals is extraordinary. Some have worked tirelessly to

making other Kiwis better off, while others have inspired us through being the very best at their chosen fields. “All of them are unique and special New Zealanders. They are all Kiwis of whom we can be very proud.” In January, the judging panel will announce the final shortlist of three people, with the overall winner announced at a gala awards ceremony in Auckland on February 25. - NZME

A three-day cyber-attack against the TAB website has been thwarted by specialist IT staff. TAB executive general manager Glenn Patrick said the company’s website suffered an unprecedented cyberattack which began on Boxing Day. “It intermittently took down our website - so our website wasn’t available for customers to go on, get information, place bets etcetera.” The attack had the biggest impact on Boxing Day, but customers were still able to place bets through the company’s retail outlets, its mobile app and by telephone, Mr Patrick said. It was unclear how much money the TAB had lost as a result of its website being down over the two days, Mr Patrick said. - NZME

Body recovery A body recovery operation for a 16-year-old boy who was swept out to sea in Northland on Saturday afternoon was launched yesterday. The boy was swept out to sea off 90 Mile Beach at Hukatere in the Far North. He had been swimming with family. A police spokeswoman said police no longer considered there was an opportunity for rescue, and entered a body recovery phase yesterday. Far North Surf Rescue chairman Dave Ross yesterday said the swells on the day were 1.5 metres high and the family had been swimming in an area plagued by a rip. Police and volunteer searchers would be scouring the shoreline for the boy’s body, Mr Ross said. - NZME

Crash victim named A man who was believed to have been electrocuted after crashing into a power pole in Canterbury on Saturday night has been named. He was 25-year-old Jamie Shane Webb, from Christchurch. The crash occurred on O’Hallorans Road, a gravel road in Glentui, in the Waimakariri District, around 6pm, causing the power lines to fall on top of the car. It happened as two cars were travelling along O’Hallorans Rd when one of the vehicles, a dark green hatchback with four occupants inside, left the road at low speed and hit the power pole. The pole broke and the live power lines came down on top of the car. Mr Webb was one of the rear seat passengers and police said they believed he was electrocuted as he attempted to leave the crashed car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. - NZME

Arrest warrants More than 70 people are wanted on arrest warrants for alleged sex crimes and evading police. The New Zealand Herald can reveal that as of November 17, at least 74 people were wanted for alleged sexual offending. Figures released by the Ministry of Justice under the Official Information Act show that 23 of the outstanding warrants were for people believed to be in Auckland. The other 13 regions had fewer than 10 alleged sex offenders wanted on warrants. The number of people wanted by police with active arrest warrants was 6910, so the alleged sex offenders made up just 1.1 per cent. - NZME

OUR VIEW

Ashburton, the town new year forgot Sue Newman

SENIOR REPORTER

I

f you’re looking for a New Year’s Eve party in Ashburton, look elsewhere. Drive down the main street as the year ticks over and you’ll probably be the only car in town. The pubs and clubs might be raging but anyone looking for a community celebration is out of luck – several years out of luck. When the 21st century dawned, Ashburton, along with communities around New Zealand celebrated. And here on home turf that celebration was of a kind rarely seen. East Street became party central, with bands, food stalls and thousands of people gathering to swing into the new year, the new century with friends and strangers. So successful was that first new year party, its organisers, the Ashburton District Council, decided to hold a mirror event the following year and so it went for a number of years. The event grew from strength to strength run by various organisations until those organisers ran out of energy and it was canned in 2006. It stuttered back to life again, was canned by the cops because of shoddy drunken behaviour by a few partygoers and finally died in 2008. And that left a huge gap on Ashburton’s new year social calendar. While the Lake Clearwater party plugged that gap for some, this too has been canned. The choice is now your place or your mate’s place or you head out of town. Where ever you go the new low drink-drive limits will mean a long wait for public transport or a long walk home. As it has done for the past few years, the curtain will fall silently on the old year and open without fanfare on the new.

Hopes fade for survivors A missing AirAsia plane carrying 162 people is likely at the bottom of the sea, Indonesia’s rescue chief says. Indonesia resumed its sea and aerial search at first light yesterday, but hopes have faded that survivors will be found. National Search and Rescue chief Henry Bambang Soelistyo told a news conference the plane is most likely to have crashed into the ocean. “Based on the co-ordinates that we know, the evaluation would be that any estimated crash position is in the sea, and that the hypothesis is the plane is at the bottom of the sea,” he told a news conference. The Airbus A320-200 disappeared en route from Surabaya in Indonesia’s east Java to Singapore after the crew requested a change of flight plan due to stormy weather, in the third crisis for a Malaysian carrier this year. Five aircraft will be sent to search for the plane, including two C-130 military transport aircraft and a Boeing 737, Indonesian air force spokesman Hadi Cahyanto said. “Two planes have already left. Three more will follow suit. It is cloudy in some parts but still bright,” Cahyanto said. “We are focusing the search area in the waters on the eastern and northern part of Belitung island.” Australia, Malaysia and Singapore have also joined the search, which is centred on the Java Sea. The US has also said it was ready to assist. A Royal Australian Air Force AP-3C Orion equipped with

Police believed the teenager was diving or spearfishing at Cheynes beach, near Albany, with another person when a shark bit the boy just before 12.30pm yesterday. A spokesman said the teenager had an injury consistent with a shark bite, but further assessment would need to be made to confirm the attack. - AAP

sophisticated search equipment took off yesterday from Darwin while Singapore said it was deploying two C-130 aircraft in addition to naval ships already dispatched. AirAsia said 155 of those on board flight QZ8501 were Indonesian, with three South Koreans and one person each from Singapore, Malaysia, Britain and France. The Frenchman was the copilot. Distraught relatives of the missing passengers spent the night in Surabaya hoping for news of their loved ones. Security was tight at the airport crisis centre, with dozens

of security officers and soldiers seen standing guard. Air traffic controllers lost contact with the twin-engine aircraft around an hour after it left Surabaya’s Juanda international airport at about 5:35 am local time on Saturday. Shortly before disappearing, the pilot asked to ascend by 6000 feet to 38,000 feet to avoid heavy clouds, according to an Indonesian transport ministry official. The plane’s disappearance comes at the end of a disastrous year for Malaysian aviation. Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Bei-

jing in March with 239 passengers and crew, and in July flight MH17 was shot down over troubled Ukraine killing all 298 on board. Late yesterday an Indonesian official says objects have been spotted in the sea by an Australian search plane hunting for the missing AirAsia jet. Jakarta’s Air Force base commander Rear Marshal Dwi Putranto says he has been informed that an Australian Orion aircraft had detected suspicious objects about 160 kilometres southwest of Pangkalan Bun, or 1120 kilometres from the location where the plane lost contact. - AFP

Hundreds on burning ferry await rescue Rescuers were working into the night to save nearly 300 passengers trapped on a burning Italian ferry as coastguards reported one man had died in the high-seas drama. By late yesterday evening, Italian Transport Minister Maurizio Lupi said the flames were under control while the Italian navy said 190 people of the 478 on board had been evacuated. “It’s going to be a long night,” Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said on Twitter. winds and choppy waters hampered efforts by teams from Greece, Italy and Albania to retrieve more passengers from the Norman Atlantic. The blaze, which sent huge clouds of smoke into the air, was said to have started on the ferry’s car deck in the early hours when the vessel was some 44 nautical miles northwest of the Greek island of Corfu. A Greek passenger who had fallen from an escape chute into the Adriatic Sea with his wife was found dead by Italian coastguards, despite repeated attempts at an air rescue amid six-metre waves.

His wife was safely plucked from the water and transferred to the Italian port of Brindisi. In desperate scenes earlier in the day, terrified passengers pleaded by mobile phone live on TV to be saved from the vessel, which was travelling from the Greek port of Patras to Ancona in Italy. “I cannot breathe, we are all going to burn like rats - God save us,” cried one of the ship’s cooks in a call to his wife, she told journalists. Alongside rescue efforts by a flotilla of ships, including nearby merchant vessels, helicopters were slowly winching pas-

sengers to safety two at a time. As darkness fell, the Italian navy said that a tugboat, the Marietta Barretta, had finally been able to attach itself to the ferry, raising hopes it could be stabilised sufficiently to accelerate the evacuation of the 287 left on board. Greek Marine Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis confirmed the towing operation but said he did not know the destination of the tugboat. Although Albania was “much closer,” he said the final decision rested with the Italian rescuers who were coordinating the efforts. - AFP

A group of 83 Rwandan Hutu rebels have turned themselves in in the face of threatened action by UN and Congolese troops as part of efforts to restore calm in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s restive east. The rebels from the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, known as the FDLR, surrendered to authorities in North Kivu province in the DR Congo yesterday, said provincial deputy governor Feller Lutaichirwa. The FDLR is thought to include up to 2000 fighters, including those suspected of the 1994 Rwandan genocide. - AFP

Bogoievski said market penetration in the retirement village market in Australia and New Zealand was low by western standards and Infratil and New Zealand Super were no strangers to the scene, with each having separate individual

stakes in NZX-listed Metlifecare. New Zealand Super, the fund set up during Sir Michael Cullen’s tenure as finance minister, is designed to part-fund future state pension requirements. By statute, the fund cannot own any more than 50 per cent of an asset. Bogoievski said it and Infratil, which has invested with NZ Super in Z Energy, were wellsuited investment partners. “They need an investor with a similar view, so Infratil is pretty much made for measure in that respect,” he said. Shane Solly, portfolio manager and research analyst at Harbour Asset Management, said both Infratil and NZ Super were well-versed in the dynamics of the retirement village sector. “It appears to be a well-considered investment,” he said. - NZME

Operating income, which is derived from the wider Jetstar unit, increased 4.1 per cent to $27.9 million, lagging the 5.6 percent increase in manpower and staff related costs of $24.7 million. In August the Australian airline embarked on a transformation programme with plans for more redundancies and an overhaul of its structure as it seeks to return to profitability. It posted an annual loss of A$2.84 billion in the June year as it wrote down the value of its international fleet by A$2.56 billion, faced fleet restructuring costs of A$394 million and redundancy and restructuring costs of A$428 million. Since then, Qantas has said it anticipates all operating segments to be profitable in the first half, forecasting underlying pre-tax profit of between A$300 million and A$350 million in the six months ending December 31, which would be its best result since 2010. - NZME

Qantas Airways, Australia biggest airline, lifted revenue on trans-Tasman routes by 18 per cent last year amid increased traffic flows. The airline’s subsidiary Jetconnect, which manages the group’s trans-Tasman passenger schedule, lifted operating revenue to $75.3 million in the 12 months ended June 30 from $64 million a year earlier, according to financial statements lodged with the Companies Office. That’s the most revenue Qantas has generated from the trans-Tasman route since 2009, and outpaced rival Virgin Australia’s sales over the same period, which edged up $1.9 million to $274 million in the same period. Market leader Air New Zealand reported a 4 per cent drop in revenue from Australia and the Pacific Islands to $682 million, while at the same time increasing passenger numbers 3 per cent to 3.28 million across those routes. New Zealand government figures show the number of transTasman flights increased 1.5 per cent to 41,656 in the year ended June 30, while New Zealanders departing for Australia climbed 10 per cent to 1.07 million and arrivals from Australia advanced 4.2 per cent to 1.23 million passengers. Infratil’s manager, Morrison and Co, had been looking at the Australian retirement sector for the last five years and more intensively in the last 18 months, Infratil’s chief executive Marko Bogoievski, said. “Australia is a more fragmented market with almost identical demographics to New Zealand’s,” he said. “Whether you look at the 65 plus or 85 plus, that demographic is growing at four or five times the rate of general population growth,” he said. The total consideration was

NZ$670 million (A$640.2m), with Infratil and New Zealand Super providing A$429.5m and the balance funded by existing back debt on RetireAustralia’s balance sheet. Just as Infratil and New Zealand Super signed off on the deal, the Kiwi dollar was surging higher against a faltering Australian dollar. Over the weekend, the Kiwi reached 95.72 Australian cents, its highest point since December 2005, and raising the possibility that it could soon reach parity. “We take those sorts of (currency) things into account and right now looks like a pretty good time to make an acquisition in the Australian market,” Bogoievski told NZME. ■ NEW ZEALAND DAIRYING

Dairy’s rollercoaster year Fonterra farmers started the year on a record high with a payout of $8.40 per kilo of milksolids on the table for the 2013-14 season. Synlait Milk was quick to deliver its good news, raising the price from $8.00kgMS to a range of $8.30 to $8.40kgMS, followed by Westland Milk Products who came in around the $7.90-$8.30 mark. But even while Mid Canterbury’s white gold was flowing commentators and industry spokespeople were warning the tide was about to change. Confidence began to dribble away as the year progressed. By May dairy product prices recorded their sixth consecutive drop in GlobalDairyTrade auctions. By August Fonterra slashed its farm gate forecast for the 2014-15 season from $7 per kg of milksolids to $6 per kg. In September Westland followed suit, revising its payout to $5.40-$5.80kgMS, down on the $6-$6.40 forecast announced in July. When Fonterra slashed its forecast farmgate milk price for this season to $4.70 per kilo of milksolids - $3.70kg/MS down on the record high, reality started to bite. And not only for farmers – the impact is starting to ripple out, especially in those communities heavily reliant on dairying. Federated Farmers dairy chairman Andrew Hoggard has singled out districts like Ash-

It’s been a year of highs and lows in the dairy industry. Rural editor Michelle Nelson takes a look the year that was.

From a predicted high of $8.40 per kilo of milksolids to a many times revised low of $4.70 so far this season, will it fall any further?

burton as likely to suffer a blow. Despite agricultural analysts predicting the fall, few imagined it would be as steep, and there’s still another five months of the season to get through. The New Zealand Dairy Statistics 2013-14, released by LIC and DairyNZ recently, pointed to the country’s 4.92 million cows having hit a new record, producing 1.83 billion kilograms of milksolids, and worth around the $15.5 billion mark. DairyNZ senior economist Matthew Newman said this

should help tide farmers over in view of the rapid decline in milk prices this season. The increased production, up 30kg per cow on average, came on the back of the loss of production during the 201213 drought across large tracts of the North Island. New milk from more than 100,000 extra cows in the South Island herd also ramped up productivity. “It has all added up to a great combination for farmers – the best season many can recall. We’ve had good pasture growth,

a high payout and farmers responded by making the most of the opportunity to produce a lot more milk,” Mr Newman said. Nationwide herd numbers are up by 2.9 per cent, equating to 138,600 extra cows on Kiwi farms. Across the board breeding worth gains of 14 per cent and production worth gains of 10 per cent point to improved genetics. LIC commercialisation and industry relations manager Dr Steve Harcourt also thinks the

progressive attitudes on New Zealand farmers will help get them through the season ahead. However, as 2014 draws to a close the fact remains many farmers are facing a tough start to the New Year. DairyNZ’s Tim Mackle said prices were unlikely to recover during the first half of 2015, but the real crunch would come at the beginning of the 2015-16 season. Given that most farmers will have already spent 60 per cent of their total farm working expenses, there will be limited potential to cut back at this point in time, he said. Fonterra chairman John Wilson said while the lower forecast was expected, the revision will put pressure on farm budgets, and there was no sign of the market stabilising in the near future. “There is still considerable volatility in global dairy markets,” he said. “Right now we are seeing a number of factors that are delaying a sustained return to higher global prices.” While there has been considerable criticism of the forecasting system, Mr Hoggard says it would be impossible for Fonterra to change its farmer payout after every GDT auction. “Yes, better forecasting would be great, but at the start of the year who predicted that the Ukraine would go pear shaped or that the worst ebola outbreak in history would occur?” he said.

■ IRRIGATION

Sharing the truth about irrigation Highlighting New Zealand’s international excellence in irrigation practice to urban audiences and dispelling myths is key to getting greater acceptance of water storage and irrigation throughout the country, IrrigationNZ CEO Andrew Curtis told a gathering of 70 politicians, industry and business representatives and NGOs in Wellington recently. The breakfast meeting was arranged by the national body representing irrigators and the irrigation industry, IrrigationNZ, as part of its efforts to educate New Zealanders about water storage and irrigation and to emphasise the link to food production. In his opening remarks, Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy congratulated IrrigationNZ for bringing together the capital city’s key decisionmakers to learn about the irrigation industry. “Irrigation underpins a big part of the economy as water is New Zealand’s strategic asset and our competitive advantage in the world. Irrigation is crucial to our way of life and while we have an abundance of water, it doesn’t always fall in the right

place at the right time which is why irrigation and water storage are so important.” IrrigationNZ chairperson Nicky Hyslop described to the group the importance of irrigation in putting food on all of our tables. She described what their full Kiwi breakfast might look like without irrigation – black coffee and wild salmon. “The majority of the country’s fresh fruit and vegetables are grown under irrigation, as is a substantial amount of dairy produce (>25 per cent), the majority of grain crops that provide flour for our daily bread, as well as feed for chickens, farmed salmon and pigs,” Mrs Hyslop said. “Anti-irrigation rhetoric often develops in urban centres and we want to inform these audiences that irrigators not only help sustain quality of life for all New Zealanders, but are also making significant efforts to manage land and water sustainably at their own expense. Today we’re asking urban New Zealand to recognise these efforts,” she said. To show first-hand what irrigation schemes and irrigating farmers are doing, North Otago

Mid Canterbury dairy farmers Mark and Devon Slee were in Wellington to speak about efficient irrigation.

Irrigation Company (NOIC) CEO Robyn Wells and Mark Slee of Melrose Dairy also spoke. The NOIC scheme, which supplies water to farmers around Oamaru, has contributed to a district-wide GDP increase of $48 million or 4.9 per cent per annum and has added 274 full time equivalent jobs. NOIC was the first New Zealand irrigation scheme to introduce a mandatory Farm Environment Plan (FEP) for its shareholders. The FEP ensures specific environmental issues are managed appropriately through a transparent, audited approach covering riparian planting, effluent and nutrient management, soil management and irrigation practice. “We are in a new era and we need to drive improvements continuously,” Ms Wells said. “This meeting in Wellington

was an opportunity to share how we are doing this.” Mark Slee, who milks 2640 cows with wife Devon in Mid Canterbury producing 1.2m kg of milksolids annually, has made considerable investment into managing their operation’s water, effluent and energy systems. Earlier this year the couple won the supreme award in the Canterbury Ballance Farm Environment Awards as well as the national award. Over the past eight years the Slees have moved to highly targeted irrigation application through centre pivots, GPS and soil moisture monitoring and water storage. “All farmers are under pressure to maintain production while at the same time improve land and water practices within new environmental limits and regulations,” Mr Slee said. “It is a very different landscape to the

past and while it will take time to see the improvements, they are happening.” IrrigationNZ CEO Andrew Curtis, said: “It is important that the public understand how essential irrigation in New Zealand is and what the opportunities are. We have all the tools to be world leading in this industry: new environmental legislation, a productive primary industries sector and an innovative and entrepreneurial culture.” “New Zealand has trebled its production of meat and wool and doubled its production of grain since large scale irrigation has been put in over the last 20 years. The significance of irrigated land which produces 20 per cent of our primary industry export earnings from 6 per cent of our productive land should not be underestimated,” Mr Curtis said.

Fairton

Our December meeting was held down at Lake Hood. Six of us had a very tasty lunch after our president Veronica welcomed us. The motto: “A kind thought is a gracious gift.” The business part of the meeting was dealt with and members were thanked and congratulated on their efforts for the Bay and Tray at the A&P show. For a very small WI we did so well. After a long chat, Christmas parcels were exchanged and Veronica wished us all a very happy Christmas, and a very happy meeting came to an end for 2014.

Hinds

On a warm nor’west November day 18 members met in the Davision Room at Hinds. It was great to see so many members and Rosa Bennett welcomed back those who had been unwell. The meeting opened with the singing of the Ode and reciting of the Aspirations. Jo Wilson was congratulated on Hinds coming out the winner at the A&P show in the Tray competition, Lest We Forget. Hinds also received a special rosette for a scarf Valmai McKenzie had woven for the bay. Participants in the bay competition were also congratulated; just a quarter of a point off third place. Thought for the day: “The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a great fire to be kindled”. Our speaker for the day was David Leadley a driving instructor, who asked us some road rule questions, ones we should all know. He then explained some technicalities of roundabouts, flush median lines and what happens when we turn 75. We all have to reapply and have a medical test, sometimes a driving test. Mr Leadley stressed driving to the conditions at the time, is vital. Question time followed, all present would have gained a lot of knowledge. Birthday girls for the month were Kathryn Lilley and Ruth Sheppard. In December Hinds members had their Christmas break-up at the Lake House Restaurant, attended by 14 members. A short meeting was held to update members on forthcoming events. A link letter was read out from Marchwood WI in England which has 60 members. Some of the fun workshops they held were Sugar Craft, Learning to Crochet, making jewellery, chocolate making, flower arranging and creation of useful or wearable items from re-cycled goods. A carol concert was also held. Lunch was then enjoyed by everyone. The exchange of Christmas gifts was followed by everyone singing: “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. A delightful way for members to end the year.

Netherby

President Pauline Palmer welcomed 27 members to our December meeting. After the Aspirations were recited and Grace was said, we enjoyed a delicious pot luck dinner. Denise Clark read our Gold Threads, and then we moved onto the business side of the evening. Arrangements were made for volunteers for Meals on Wheels in February, and our Annual General Meeting. Nominations were invited for the 2015 committee and numbers were taken for the Mystery Bus Trip for our birthday celebrations. The Roll Call: Toiletries for Ronald

McDonald House produced over 160 items. Well done ladies!! The competitions for the evening were judged by popular vote and the winners were: Nellie Burrows – a Christmas table decoration, and Betty Dijker – a Christmas slice. With the formalities over, we invited our Federation President, Denise Clark to cut the Christmas cake which was baked by Pauline Palmer and iced by Daphne Sheehan. This was followed by supper which concluded a lovely evening.

Rakaia

The Rakaia Women’s Institute continues to enjoy good attendances at their meetings. Our guest speakers have been Deirdre Moses from Fruit Fund who spoke about the scheme to donate fresh fruit to schools, pre-schools, and kindergartens, which she has set up: and Marjorie Lucre, one of our members, who gave us an interesting talk, on her time as matron of a boys boarding school. Members provided entries for the WI Bay Competition at Ashburton Show, achieving reasonably well; two members being awarded special prizes for baking and craft. Our Roll Call was: “An Item for Charity Shop” – a good response, and items will be given to St. Vincent de Paul Society. The motto was: “Be true to your Word, Your Work, Your Friends and Your WI”. Members have been busy knitting Peggy squares which will be made into rugs and donated to charity. The competitions table was well supported, with a good display of roses, rhododendrons and much more this month. The Monica Johnson Memorial Trophy was won by Monica Hanrahan and the raffle by Heather Isles. Our last meeting for the year will be in December when we will meet for a Christmas lunch and exchange of gifts at Salmon Tales. Happy Christmas to all and Best Wishes for 2015.

Tinwald

For our December meeting 11 members and two husbands met at the Stables for lunch. After this we enjoyed a cuppa and a piece of Christmas cake. A few ideas were mentioned for next year’s meetings. An informal chat brought our pleasant lunch to a close.

Wakanui

For Wakanui’s last meeting for the year, we met at Nosh on November 26. Fifteen members enjoyed lunch and a chat before a meeting at president Rosemary Moore’s house. Members were thanked for their services during the year and wished a Merry Christmas. Afternoon tea was then served.

Westpark

On November 18, 16 members travelled to Mayfield, sharing cars for the trip. A short meeting was held before we partook of a lovely lunch at the Mayfield Tavern. A huge bouquet to the lady who looked after us there and prepared the meals on her own. After lunch we had a browse through Overflow – a shop where you could possibly find anything you wanted. The trip back to Ashburton brought a very enjoyable day to its end.

In brief Van Gaal upbeat Louis van Gaal believes Manchester United are still in the Premier League title race despite missing a chance to close the gap on the top two. Van Gaal’s side paid the price for their failure to convert a number of first half chances when they were held to a 0-0 draw at Tottenham yesterday. That meant they stay 10 points behind Chelsea, who were held by Southampton, and seven adrift of second placed Manchester City, who were also frustrated in a draw with struggling Burnley. Van Gaal is confident United are improving and capable of reeling in Chelsea and City during the second half of the season. - AFP

A time to savour for Black Caps By DaviD Leggat New Zealand are dipping their toes into uncharted test territory. Win or lose against Sri Lanka in Wellington next week won’t alter the fact New Zealand have been unbeaten in their last six series, going back to the middle of last year. Nobody would have picked that back in the dark days of January 2013 as New Zealand picked through the wreckage of 45 all out at Cape Town. For the record, New Zealand have drawn in Bangladesh, beaten the West Indies home and away, beaten India at home, drawn with Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates - and now this.

These are rousing times for New Zealand, the test team. The World Cup is around the corner, but that’s for later. For now, relish what New Zealand are achieving in the game’s ultimate format. And wonder, is there a spinoff for the ODI side? There can be some correlation. The personnel will change, although six of the winning XI at Hagley Oval yesterday seem sure to be in the final 15 for the cup, to be named at the end of the second test. The most visible change is the confidence that this group exudes. Captain Brendon McCullum was at pains last night to stress there are certain standards in-

grained, including respect for the game and the opposition and - having won back the public after a dreadful period of ructions in late 2012 and early 2013 - a determination to keep them. Add in a resolve not to get too big for their boots and you have an ideal scenario for fine deeds. New Zealand have top-class batsmen working well in unison. Kane Williamson, 931 test runs this year, Ross Taylor and McCullum, who ends the year on 1165 runs, are the middle order planks. Tim Southee and Trent Boult lead a bowling attack with skill and persistence. Is there a better new ball double act on the test circuit?

James Anderson and Stuart Broad of England are contenders; so too South Africans Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander. But Southee and Boult, both ranked inside the world top 10 bowlers, sit easily in that company. Sri Lankan captain Angelo Mathews is confident his team will benefit from the Hagley Oval beating. They look forward to the return of spinner Rangana Herath, the world’s most successful test bowler this year. Still, he won’t find a Colombo bunsen burner of a pitch in the capital to work with. What New Zealand are achieving right now should be savoured. Happy New Year indeed. - NZH

Australia claims 326-run lead over India By RoB FoRsaith Virat Kohli continued to antagonise Australia, but the hosts boasted a 326-run lead over India at stumps on day four of the Boxing Day Test. India, needing victory at the MCG to keep their hopes of retaining the Border-Gavaskar trophy alive, fought back brilliantly with the bat on Sunday. Yesterday they backed it up in the field, but a record runchase is likely to be required

with Australia 7-261 at stumps after Shaun Marsh’s steadying 62 not out. David Warner blasted a quick-fire 40, while Chris Rogers posted a fourth consecutive half-century. Marsh rallied with his maiden half-century on home soil, but Australia’s top order otherwise failed to convert starts into scores of substance. History suggests Australia can almost start to feel comfortable - England’s 7-332 in 1928

is the highest successful runchase in an MCG Test. But India will draw confidence from Kohli’s 169 on day three. Kohli taunted Mitchell Johnson during that masterful knock then declared he had no reason to respect some Australian cricketers. The 26-year-old was part of the Indian contingent that gave Johnson a vocal send-off on day four. Kohli also offered Brad Had-

din some unsolicited advice. With Australia 5-176 and the game in the balance when Haddin joined the fray, Kohli made a beeline for the 37-year-old. As Haddin asked for and marked centre, a chirpy Kohli shadowed him in a fashion more commonly associated with AFL taggers at the venue. Australia added a total of 15 runs in the 10 overs following tea, which was taken 70 minutes late due to a rain delay in the second session. - AAP

Australian quick James Pattinson will take a major step in his return from a serious back injury when he plays for the Melbourne Renegades in the T20BBL tonight. Pattinson, 24, last played Test cricket in March when Australia sealed a memorable series win in Cape Town, but he was then forced to undertake a lengthy recovery programme after suffering a recurrence of a debilitating back injury. He was visibly distressed and left the MCG net area after he struck Shane Watson on the helmet in the lead up to the Test. The Renegades are looking for their first win of this Big Bash League campaign. - AAP

Windies fight back West Indian cricket captain Denesh Ramdin hailed his side’s best day on tour after they fought back on the third day of the second Test against South Africa at St George’s Park yesterday. Kraigg Brathwaite (65 not out) and Marlon Samuels (60 not out) hit half-centuries as the West Indies reached 2-147 in reply to South Africa’s 8-417 declared. Ramdin praised his bowlers, who took five wickets for 128 runs, despite a lightning 58 off 28 balls by Dale Steyn, and said the West Indian batsmen had made a good start. - AFP

Revamp for Phoenix Phoenix coach Ernie Merrick will have to revamp his in-form front three this week. With Roy Krishna (hamstring) and Nathan Burns (international duty) unavailable for the away trip to Adelaide tomorrow, Merrick will call upon some seldom-used bodies to join Michael McGlinchey in the side’s attacking trio. The departing Jeremy Brockie, Costa Rican international Kenny Cunningham and All White Tyler Boyd will all be vying for a starting spot against Adelaide in South Australia. “I think we’ve got enough firepower up front and they’re just desperate to get a run,” Merrick said. - NZH

Jets need to soar There may still be half the A-League season remaining, but this week looms as vital for the Newcastle Jets and their coach Phil Stubbins. With games against Melbourne City today at Hunter Stadium and Sydney FC on Saturday at WIN Stadium, the competition strugglers could be tapping on the door of the top six by week’s end - or grounded in the bottom two of the competition. - AAP

In brief Mills back on court Australian star Patty Mills was surprised how smoothly his return to NBA action went after more than six months on the sidelines. Mills played his first game of the season for reigning champions San Antonio, coming back from off-season shoulder surgery and adding eight points in the Spurs’ 110-106 home win over the Houston Rockets. Earlier, LeBron James suffered a poor shooting performance and Kyrie Irving remained sidelined with a bruised knee as the Cleveland Cavaliers were routed 103-80 by visiting Detroit. - AAP

Flintoff defends Maxwell Former England match-winner Andrew Flintoff has gone into bat for Glenn Maxwell, urging Australia’s selectors to keep faith in the backfiring allrounder. Maxwell’s World Cup position appears in jeopardy as the Victorian nicknamed Big Show has hit the worst form slump of his career - highlighted by an embarrassing first-ball duck on Sunday night. Adam Gilchrist labelled the bizarre dismissal one of the biggest brain explosions in cricket history, but Heat drawcard Flintoff defended the big-hitting gambler. “Sometimes you are going to get the horrendous dismissals but on the flip side you will get the special innings as well.” - AAP

Ravens, Panthers win Baltimore and Carolina captured the last two National Football League playoff spots with victories yesterday while Aaron Rodgers shook off a calf injury to spark a crucial Green Bay triumph. Carolina routed host Atlanta 34-3 in a matchup of teams with losing records for the NFC South division crown while Baltimore downed Cleveland 20-10 and took the last American Conference wildcard playoff spot - AFP

Expensive breakage New Zealand winemaker Jim Delegat is facing a bill of $400,000 after a snapped mast forced his yacht Giacomo to withdraw from the Sydney to Hobart race. Giacomo was ninth, tracking down Tasmania’s mid-east coast, when disaster struck as the rig came down in strong northeasterly winds. - AAP

Hagley Park an all-round winner Test cricket returned to Christchurch after an absence of eight years this week, and the crowds turned out in force, with day one of the match an unprecedented sellout. They were treated to a run-fest from New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum, who smashed 195 runs to set up a victory which the Black Caps sealed yesterday, with Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor at the wicket to see the home team win. The new facility at Hagley Park passed muster on all counts, and is looking good in preparation for the World Cup which begins on February 14. PHOTO JOSEPH JOHNSON

Change of tack for Pondarosa Miss Te Awamutu trainer Peter Hollinshead has scratched the TAB’s $5 fixed-odds favourite Pondarosa Miss from next month’s Gr.2 Platinum Homes Wellington Cup at Trentham. But fans of the popular mare can breathe a sigh of relief because it’s another feature that’s in Hollinshead’s sights rather than

any setback that has led to her withdrawal. In the wake of Pondarosa Miss’ dashing third placing at her first attempt in Group One company in last week’s weight-for-age Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie, Hollinshead has decided to lodge a late entry for the Gr.1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) at Trentham on

January 24, the same day as the Wellington Cup (2400m). “She went such a good race at weight-for-age. She’s not a big filly and she’s still only four and we just think the Thorndon Mile will be a better option for her,” Hollinshead said. “She’s better kept to 2000m and mile races at the moment. We’ll

put in a late nomination for the Thorndon Mile because she’s proved she’s up to that class now. I thought I’d pull her out of the Wellington Cup now because we don’t want people wasting their money backing her for that race.” Hollinshead has next year’s A$6m Melbourne Cup as Pondarosa Miss’ long range target.- NZME

■ KUROW RACES

Ashburton Guardian 23

In brief

Ultimatum for King Montrose The flat racing future of the Groupwinning sprinter King Montrose goes on the line at Kurow today. Trainer Neil Ridley could find no excuses for the eight-year-old last time out and any further disappointment might result in a change of role for the gelding. A former Gr.3 Stewards’ Stakes winner, King Montrose was well below par at Southland and may be on his final chance in the PGG Wrightson Kurow Cup. “He was disappointing last time – just too slow,” Ridley said. “He’s been working well so we’re hoping he does something. “We’ll see what happens and if it doesn’t go right then he may be going hurdling. “He’d be handy enough for a round at least!” King Montrose is best known for his sprinting deeds, but Ridley might be selling the son of King’s Chapel a touch short as he is a two-time winner over 2000 metres at Riccarton. He will have every opportunity to redeem himself at Kurow with Racha Cuneen’s claim bringing his weight down to a handy 56.5kg. They will also have the benefit of the ace draw. Former Telegraph placegetter El Chico had little luck in the Listed Timaru Cup and still remains a force to be reckoned with despite his advancing years, while stablemate Coup Darci Be made good ground for fifth in the Listed Mosgiel Stakes run on Boxing Day. Kenny and Lisa Rae had an outstanding day at Ellerslie on Sunday with longshot winners Kolaman and Kaharau and the perennial travellers have two good chances of southern success in Absolut Excelencia and Ishimine. - NZME

Bosson back on track Opie Bosson is out to make up for lost ground at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. The crack jockey was stood down at Ellerslie on Boxing Day through ill health after riding Dal Cielo to win the two-year-old race. He was already set to miss the racedays between the two Ellerslie premier meetings through suspension. “I’m back healthy and feeling really positive for Thursday,” Bosson said. He rides Durham Town in the Railway, last-start winner Surpass in the Gr.3 City Of Auckland Cup, Diademe in the Rich Hill Mile, Charmont in the Royal Stakes, Highland Park in the Great Northern Guineas and Colonel Carrera in the Dunstan Feeds Final, as well as Gustavo, Imperial Hawk and Dennis Denuto. - NZME

Change of focus New Zealand Hall of Famer John Wheeler is changing direction. The top Taranaki trainer who prepared Rough Habit to win 11 Group One races, said he had stopped buying yearlings, preferring to focus on horses he had bred. “I’m kind of winding down the operation a bit so I have more time to do other things. “If you keep going the way I am, you’d end up with your life being dominated by racing until the day you die and I don’t really want that.” Jumps racing remained a passion and Wheeler is keen to team up with Graeme Rogerson to campaign a team in Europe. - NZME

Rock ready to roll Jason Price is expecting a bold showing from a rejuvenated Juggernaut Rock in today’s Harcourts Taupo Cup. “He’s freshened up nicely and he’s been working really well,” the Matamata trainer said. Juggernaut Rock hasn’t raced since he was out of the money in the Gr.3 New Zealand Cup after a promising leadup effort when fifth in the Listed Metropolitan Trophy. “On the first day he hit the line hard, but he’s not a two miler,” Price said. “Matt (Cameron) said at the half mile he came off the bridle and 3200 metres is a little bit too far for him.”

Right: King Montrose, possibly heading for a career in hurdling.

Line Seeker strikes

■ RIDER CHANGE

Riddell back on Puccini at Ellerslie

Jonathan Riddell

Group One winner Puccini will back up at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day with a change of rider. Jonathan Riddell will replace Vinnie Colgan aboard last season’s New Zealand Derby hero in the Gr.2 Rich Hill Stud Mile. The switch has been confirmed in the wake of Puccini’s performance in the Gr.1 Zabeel Classic on Boxing Day when he weakened out after over-racing in a repeat of his Gr.1 Livamol Classic defeat in the spring. “It was disappointing and the horse needs a change of

rider,” co-trainer Peter McKay said. “Obviously, Vinnie doesn’t get on with the horse and not all jockeys get on with all horses. “It’s nothing against Vinnie, but I’ve said to the owner (Paul Smithies) that we’ve got to stick with the plan to teach the horse to relax in his races. “You can’t move on him out of the gates and sometimes he can be tardy, but you just have to sit on him and then let him work to where he wants to be. “Vinnie decided to push forward the other day and it was the wrong decision.” While disappointed with the

outcome in the Zabeel Classic, McKay was relieved that Puccini came out of the race virtually unscathed. “He took some skin off a front leg and we’re lucky that was all,” he said. “At one stage I thought he was going to go down. “He’s breezed out of it pretty well and it was always in the back of my mind to back him up.” Riddell has a perfect record on Puccini with his only previous ride in the spring resulting in a Group Three win at Trentham in the Thompson Handicap. - NZME

Buyers will be rueing a missed opportunity following Line Seeker’s latest victory at Sha Tin. Unwanted as a yearling when he failed to meet his $50,000 reserve at Karaka in 2013, the son of O’Reilly has now won two of his three starts in Hong Kong for trainer Paul O’Sullivan. Line Seeker’s latest success came over 1400 metres and provided O’Sullivan with the opening leg of a New Zealand-bred double. He later produced the High Chaparral gelding Racing Hero to win for the seventh time in his career. - NZME

Weather key for Lucky All Steve Englebrecht wants to start the new year is a firm Randwick track for Lucky Lucky Lucky in the Tattersalls Club Cup. The Warwick Farm trainer has no doubt the five-year-old is fit enough and strong enough to win the Listed feature on New Year’s Day and make amends for his fourth in the Christmas Cup last time out. With no extra entries received yesterday, there are just nine nominations for the 2400m race and the possibility of a sixhorse field. - AAP

After a strong start to the competition on Sunday, Sandra Keith has continued her winning ways at the National Open Championships on Auckland’s North Shore. Keith is looking increasingly dangerous as she eyes her fifth national title, remaining unbeat-

en heading into post section play in the women’s singles competition. She also showed her class in the women’s pairs, winning both of yesterday’s matches in section play with partner Serena Matthews. Keith’s biggest competition for the singles title appears to be New Zealand representative

Mandy Boyd, a bronze medallist at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow earlier in the year, who also made it through section play unbeaten. The second day of the competition also proved better for Mid Canterbury’s other hope, Carol Wilson. Despite crashing out of the singles tournament with just

one win from three games in section play, Wilson and her partner Pauline Bax started the pairs competition with one win and one loss. Wilson, who has been playing bowls for just one year, will also compete in the fours with her mother and an aunty, where they have been drawn in the same section as Keith.

The National Open Championships is the first major tournament for Wilson, having been only a club-based player until now. The competition runs for 13 days, with the finals of the singles and pairs set down to be played on January 4, while the fours will conclude five days later.

Signal produces Houdini act to go four straight BY LINDSAY KNIGHT Blake Signal, one of the few Black Jacks from this year’s Commonwealth Games to attend this season’s national bowls championships, produced arguably the star act of yesterday’s

men’s pair’s qualifying rounds to avoid what would have been another major boil-over. Just as Gary Lawson had dashed the hopes of Don Baker and Craig Baker with his final bowl on the opening day, Signal, with his last bowl, snatched

what seemed a certain victory from another pair of unknowns, Mairangi Bay’s Dean Wood and Arthur Beale. On the last end, with the score 14-14, Wood, still a junior, and Beale, only a sixth year bowler, were holding five shots, only for

Signal to play a toucher with his last bowl and so win the match. For Signal and his long-time partner, Alvin Gardiner, it was their fourth straight win and so meant they had qualified, even with two rounds to play. Highlight of the opening day

of women’s pair’s qualifying was the defeat in the third round of Black Jack Mandy Boyd and her sister Angela, beaten 24-9 by Taranaki’s Janice Ropitini and Susan Cottam, meaning they must win two of their three games today to qualify. - NZH
