Groundwater levels around Mid Canterbury’s pilot managed aquifer recharge site have risen around five metres and nitrate concentrations have decreased, according to the project’s first official report, and those involved say it is a success.

It is being hailed as an important tool alongside changing farming practices in improving the environment.

Chairman of the managed aquifer recharge (MAR) group Peter Lowe said

the report had been peer reviewed by world experts and had achieved two of its three goals, and was close to realising the third.

“We reduced nitrates in the command area significantly, we raised groundwater levels significantly and we are not far off getting the water into the headwaters of the coastal drains,” Lowe said yesterday after delivering the report to members of the Ashburton Water Zone Committee.

Total recharged water during the first year was 2.4 million cubic metres; this was from a total of 13.3 cubic metres

available from an unutilised Ashburton District Council stockwater consent.

Increased groundwater levels have reached about 7km downstream from the pilot site and nitrate levels in the groundwater decreased from 4g/m3 to less than 1.

Nitrate concentrations down gradient influenced by the pilot reduced from 14 to 4.

Wilson: Electorate could generate three MPs

Three of the candidates for the Rangitata seat will become MPs after next month’s election, if Olly Wilson has his way.

Wilson, who is standing for The Opportunities Party in the electorate, was this week named at number five on his party’s list, a position he said was a privilege.

He said if TOP received 5 per cent of the party votes that would be enough to get him into parliament, adding that recent polling

by UMR had the party on 4 per cent.

It’s expected that National candidate Andrew Falloon will win Rangitata and at 29 on the Labour Party list, Jo Luxton would also make it into parliament on current polling.

Wilson said he had found it interesting just how polarising Labour’s proposed water tax was in

the community.

“Personally I can see both sides.

As a father of four I’m concerned at the level of nitrates in some of our rivers and what that means for the next generation, but as an exdairy farmer I can see how it could affect people’s livelihoods.”

TOP supported both a polluter tax and a water tax, he said.

“It should be polluter pays,” he said, “and that’s all businesses, not just farmers.”

The party’s water tax was a separate part of its clear water action plan, he said.

Under the plan consent-holders would be given priority to use a certain amount of water, but they would have to a pay a price for it determined by the market. Existing consent holders would keep their consents but future consents would be auctioned.

Wilson said water had become a “massive” election issue.

The Opportunities Party Rangitata candidate, Olly Wilson, has been ranked at number five on the party list.

School of rural medicine on agenda

Proposals to establish a school of rural medicine will be discussed at a board meeting of the Rural Canterbury Primary Health Organisation this afternoon.

Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment Minister Paul Goldsmith announced on Monday that the Government planned to establish the school within three years.

He said the idea was to increase the number of doctors in rural and regional areas to make it easier for people in those areas to access key health services.

“The new school of rural medicine will be specifically geared towards meeting the challenges faced by high need and rural areas of the country and will produce around 60 additional doctors per year,” Goldsmith said.

The school was initially proposed by Waikato University, which wanted to establish it with the Waikato District Health Board.

However, that was followed by the Otago and Auckland medical schools making a joint proposal to train more rural doctors, which led to the Government this week announcing a contestable business case process to consider how

the school would be delivered and to ensure it meets the needs of rural New Zealand.

Goldsmith said it was the Government’s intention that the successful applicant would be known in 2018 and the school be up and operating by 2020.

Rural Canterbury PHO chief executive Bill Eschenbach said his board was watching the process carefully and was taking a waitand-see approach as to how it panned out.

He said it was yet to be seen how the school or the processes around it would work and whether three years was a realistic time-

Saving New Zealand’s kea one click at a time

A new, “first of its kind” online Kea Database is shedding light on the antics of Canterbury’s rapidly shrinking alpine parrot population – and its creators are calling on the public to help.

The Kea Database took flight earlier this month and is the brainchild of a group of volunteers called the Arthur’s Pass Kea Team.

The initiative draws together existing data from DOC, the Kea Conservation Trust, Orana Wildlife Park and Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, with what the team refer to as “citizen science” – any public sightings of the birds.

Arthur’s Pass Kea Team’s Mark Brabyn said he and team-mate Laura Young came up with the idea while trying to catch keas for banding last year.

“It’s about making everyone feel involved in conservation and it’s a really neat project to be working on,” he said.

The database kicked off two weeks ago along with the opening of a kea kiosk on Arthur’s Pass.

Since the “soft launch” more than 60 people have already jumped online to log sightings – entailing a brief description of when and where the bird was spotted and what it looked like, including whether it had an ankle band, and any photos taken of the bird.

The majority of recorded kea sightings had been at skifields, including three last week at Mount Hutt.

“When people log birds of a certain colour band, they can see information about that bird, which is really interesting,” Brabyn said.

“MAR is a success but it is only part of the mitigation that is happening on-farm with nutrient budgets and farm environment plans,” Lowe said.

“It is a tool to raise the groundwater levels and water quality to achieve community aspirations without buggering the economy.”

Lowe said the success of the project gave confidence in creating more MAR sites around the district.

A second site was already under way near the Hinds River and other potential sites would be investigated this summer.

Lowe, who has helped gel many community groups over the past few years to keep the project on track, said he was proud of the result.

“This has been about a district that recognised there was an issue and has taken steps to address them.”

Principal hydrologist Bob Bower, of Walbright Gilbert and Aztec NZ, said groundwater levels were up before the recent rain and he expected the gains to compound over the next four years of the trial.

He said the results also showed rural drinking water had improved.

Bower said managing the recharge allowed the community to monitor and assist nature when needed. Many partnerships of trust had also been formed as the project developed.

It is planned to include university students in the MAR operation going forward to help others grow their knowledge of the system.

All I knew at the time, over a decade ago now, was that I was in a dark place – incredibly dark in fact and it was a darkness that consumed my life.

But I did a good job at hiding it.

Very few people, if any, knew what I was battling behind closed doors.

It was my problem to deal with, no-one else needed to hear my issues. I thought about suicide a lot during that time of my life. I guess you could say that I even considered it – although it took me a long time to come to the conclusion that I was, indeed, suicidal.

and life seem unreachable of being a bright and happy one as a late teen where I had goals, ambition and drive to be successful at everything in my life. I had a decent job, a good core group of friends and a desire to do the best I could with what I had.

But a string of events changed that. A relationship break-up was a major factor and an injury that left me unable to work for a decent amount of time was another.

All of sudden things were spiralling out of control. And deeper and deeper down I found myself falling.

I remember it being a bizarre feeling. I had lost a lot of the control of my life.

Socialising seemed a depressing idea and sport, a true passion, wasn’t even appealing to me.

I preferred to find solace in other places. Alcohol, often place to get help is your GP or local mental health provider. However, if you or someone else is in danger or endangering others, call

on my own, became a bit of a secret hideaway. The pain and that god-forsaken darkness would disappear before coming back at an intensive rate when the alcohol wore off.

I remember the day I hit rock bottom too. Although I try to forget it.

The will to carry on had literally deserted me. I didn’t want to do it anymore. The vicious cycle I was in had me trapped and the only way I believed I could get through it was stopping it all together.

I decided it was time to get out, time to put a stop to it all and time to end the misery.

I didn’t think much about the consequences, I was in a selfish mood. It was all about me, I didn’t care what anyone else thought.

I set plans in place. Wrote letters to my family and some of my friends. police immediately on 111.

I effectively said my goodbyes. Probably the most alarming thing of all is how calm I felt. All of a sudden there was a purpose, I was content and was ready.

Although, I question now whether I could have gone through with it.

A simple, “Hey bro, about time we had a catch-up.”

Those nine words, however meaningless the intentions may have been intended to be, could be what saved my life.

I decided to have that catch-up and it led to what I would describe as the best breakdown of my life.

I laid it all out on the table to this person, told him of my intentions and what had been going through my head.

and most importantly, seemed to understand – he became my guardian angel.

He saved me.

With his help, we turned things around.

Negatives became positives and there was a purpose to everything again and life began – slowly but surely – to look up.

I’ve never really talked about the whole thing with anyone except that one person.

Many of the people in my life, including some of my family, will be a bit shocked to read this but reading the latest suicide statistics this week brought everything back up again. Those emotions and feelings all, for just an instance, came flooding back.

I often hear and read of people’s stories, but unfor• •

tunately a lot of them come when it’s too late.

I wouldn’t call myself an expert on the matter, but I can sympathise with people who have committed suicide because I feel like I know what it’s like to be in that place, despite having not actually gone through with it. I know how draining and mentally controlling those demons can be.

And I believe that there’s quite a few out there who can probably admit to being in the same boat, but we just don’t know it.

We do need to talk about it more and remove the taboo, the stigma that’s attached to suicide.

And that was my sole reason for writing this … to talk about it.

So, let’s do it, let’s start talking.

Former local to star in short film

Former Ashburton College student Kelley Kerr-Young has just finished shooting a short film in Australia.

Kerr-Young works as an actor in Melbourne and is also a member of the allfemale film and theatre collective Girls Act Good.

The group raised funds to shoot The Association, a social thriller about the perfect domestic life, by first staging a theatre version of it.

The film now needs final editing before it can be entered into national and international film festivals.

Kerr-Young left Ashburton College at the end of 2001 to attend the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Arts.

She graduated three years later with a Bachelor in Performing Arts and worked around New Zealand for several years before moving to Melbourne.

She and husband Stephen Camp have just bought a section in the suburb of Manor Lakes and Kerr-Young is busy following her passion for acting and singing.

The 34-year-old’s personal brand is

awkward comedy and she has been on stage in several well-known Melbourne acting houses.

Kerr-Young’s parents Paul and Barbara Young now live and train horses in West Melton, but when the family lived in Mid Canterbury she was also involved in equestrian and rugby.

After winning awards at the Sheilah Winn Festival of Shakespeare in her final year at college, she had to make a choice when a prestigious acting camp that coincided with the South Island Secondary Schools girls’ rugby tournament and the South Island Young Rider Show Jumping camp.

She chose acting and has never looked back.

The Girls Act Good collective was set up by Australian producer Jennifer Monk and is aimed at generating more theatre opportunities for women.

The group is looking for funds to help polish the final product, with an original score and soundtrack and visual effects.

Jail for recidivist offender An Ashburton man was jailed for six months yesterday after admitting an assault with a knife, three counts of theft and trespassing.

Elvis Purua, 21, was a redicivist offender with previous convictions for breaching sentences, dishonesty and demanding with intent, Ashburton District Court Judge Joanna Maze said when she imposed the custodial term.

She said Purua’s determination to continue to use cannabis was the principal cause of his offending. A report prepared for sentencing said no suitable address was available for Purua to be electronically monitored on home detention.

The thefts involved stealing items from

Countdown and Coin Save, and making off with the cash till from the Ashburton Roast Eatery in March. The trespass incident was at The Warehouse.

Police prosecutor Bronwen Blackmore said the assault with a knife, which Purua also admitted, occurred on July 30 at the Coronation Park where he was confronted in his cabin by another park resident.

When the resident refused to leave, Purua went to his kitchen and got a knife, which he waved around.

In the resulting scuffle, the resident received cuts to his hands.

Judge Maze said while the assault was provoked, Purua had used excessive selfdefence by using the knife.

Construction date mystery The story behind the photo of an elderly homestead published in the Guardian recently is long and complex but still leaves the construction date of that homestead shrouded in mystery.

Present owner Bev Jack and previous owner Sue Robinson have filled in many gaps in its history, but nailing down the date of its construction has been impossible.

The homestead, Maranui, is located at Westerfield and was built on land that was once part of the vast Westerfield block of 40,800 acres. The land’s original owner was Charles Reed (1865) and on his death the land was sold to Cyril Hawdon and Alexander Strecky in 1880.

It then changed hands regularly and was variously owned by William de Burton Wilson in 1887 and Thomas Stone in the late 1880s.

In 1903, 3802 acres were sold, along with several other blocks with the Maranui homestead sitting on block seven.

While the construction date is unknown, owner Jack suggests it could have been in the late 1860s.

The site was chosen because there was a good supply of water available and this also prompted plans to be drawn up for

The Dillon family were owners of Maranui for many years, followed by the Browns, Abernethys, Robinsons and now Jacks.

Recent owners have left their mark in many ways on the historic home with some modernisation attempts. Bay windows have been removed, many other windows replaced with aluminium frames and one owner went so far as to remove the external weather boards, replacing these with modern material.

The Robinsons turned the restoration tide, reinstated wooden panelling on interior walls using recycled material from a church and the Jacks have reclad the entire house with weatherboards.

They are continuing the work started by the Robinsons aimed at returning Maranui to its early glory.

Rod and Sue Robinson owned the property for 19 years and developed extensive gardens; the Jacks bought it six years ago.

Senior Ashburton College students are breathing easy after internal exam week drew to a close yesterday.

Students from Year 11, 12 and 13 buckled down for a week of assessments from Wednesday 23 to yesterday.

The exams ranged from one to three hours and tested progress within their NCEA subjects.

If students are unable to complete their end-of-year exams, then they receive a derived grade from these internal exams.

The students now have one more month left in the current term.

Sporting stars need our respect Matt Markham

ho would want to be a sporting star here in New Zealand?

Sometimes we are the most ignorant bunch of supporters in the world in the way we react and treat those who represent us on the sporting paddock with pride and passion week in, and week out.

A decision by the current All Blacks squad to not attend the funeral of the late Sir Colin Meads has had them in the firing line for being disrespectful and one comment described their “snub” as a disgrace to the sporting nation.

People are outraged, how dare the All Blacks not pay their respects to one of our greats.

Never mind the fact they wore the number 583 on their jerseys in Saturday night’s Bledisloe Cup thriller in Dunedin or that Sam Whitelock presented his match jersey to the Meads family as a mark of respect from the entire team.

Yet, we still have the audacity to call them out on not being in Te Kuiti?

Are we serious? Have we become that ignorant of who we are and where we come from that we no longer care about what we say on social media?

Some of the stuff that pours from people’s finger tips is absolutely disgusting.

The vitriol pointed towards players, coaches and other supporters is embarrassing and shows a bad culture that we need to snub out and quickly.

Sonny Bill Williams cops a lot of the flak – often unnecessarily.

People don’t seem to like him because he’s been successful in a number of different fields.

That, for some reason, makes him an easy target for online abuse.

But why?

What satisfaction does this give people?

Sonny Bill wouldn’t care less.

He won’t read it. So effectively there’s no damage actually being done by saying it.

Yet, you can bet your last dollar that after every test match, there will be a thread bashing him, no matter how well he might have played.

Yes, people are allowed an opinion, and they are always given the opportunity to share that opinion with social media.

But are we really smart to be slandering some of our biggest names, just for our own cheap thrills?

What gives us the right?

Perfect Father’s Day outing T

he diversity of interests and activities in our district is one of the reasons we have such an artistically and culturally rich community.

As mayor, I am in the privileged position of regularly coming across people who are passionate about their hobbies and recreational activities and who are eager to share them with the rest of our community.

While I obviously can’t talk about every one of these amazing groups, this week I would like to tell you a little about the Lynn Historical Woodworking Trust, which is holding one of its open days this Sunday, September 3 – a perfect Father’s Day outing for keen handymen.

As mayor, I am a trustee of this trust, which was founded by Bob Lynn, an Ashburtonian who produced woodwork for some of New Zealand’s most prestigious buildings.

Bob spent a lifetime working with wood and his enthusiasm certainly rubbed off on those around him.

A number of other local people have taken up his cause and are involved in keeping the trust’s museum running through volunteering and donations.

The museum, at The Plains Village, Maronan Road, is home to a large collection of woodworking tools, specialist books and named species of wood samples from around the world.

It also has one of the world’s greatest collections of ornamental turning lathes.

Missile fired over Japan North Korea fired a ballistic missile from its capital Pyongyang that flew over Japan before plunging into the northern Pacific Ocean, officials said yesterday, an aggressive testflight over the territory of a close US ally that sends a clear message of defiance as Washington and Seoul conduct war games nearby.

Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile travelled around 2700 kilometres and reached a maximum height of 550km as it flew over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

The launch, which appears to be the first to cross over Japan since 2009, will rattle a region worried that each new missile test puts the North a step closer toward its goal of an arsenal of nuclear missiles that can reliably target the United States. It appeared to be the North’s longest-ever missile test, but South Korean officials couldn’t immediately confirm.

The South Korean military said it is analysing the launch with the United States and has strengthened its monitoring and preparation in case of further actions from North Korea.

Analysts speculate the North may have tested a new intermediate-range missile that Pyongyang recently threatened to fire toward the US territory of Guam, which hosts a major military base. This missile landed nowhere near Guam, which is about 2500km south of Tokyo, but the length of

Tuesday’s launch may have been designed for the North to show it could follow through on its threat. Seoul says the missile was launched from Sunan, which is where Pyongyang’s international airport is, opening the possibility that North Korea launched a roadmobile missile from an airport runway.

It was North Korea’s 13th launch of ballistic missiles this year, said Roh Jae-cheon, spokesman of Seoul’s JCS. North Korea will no doubt be watching the world’s reac-

tion to see if it can use the flight over Japan as a precedent for future launches.

Yesterday’s launch comes days after the North fired what was assessed as three shortrange ballistic missiles into the sea and a month after its second flight test of an intercontinental ballistic missile, which analysts say could reach deep into the US mainland when perfected.

The launch over Japan isn’t a total surprise. Earlier this month North Korea specifically said they would fly over Japanese territory. North Korea in June also angrily reacted to the launch of a Japanese satellite it said was aimed at spying on the North and said Tokyo was no longer entitled to fault Pyongyang.

Kim Dong-yub, a former South Korean military official who is now an analyst at Seoul’s Institute for Far Eastern Studies, said the early flight data suggests the North Korean missile was likely a Hwasong-12.

North Korea’s UN ambassador, Ja Song Nam, wrote recently that the exercises are “provocative and aggressive” at a time when the Korean Peninsula is “like a time bomb”. – AP

At least eight killed by Nurse may have killed more than 84 patients Baghdad car bomb A car bomb has killed at least eight people in a crowded vegetable market in a Shi’ite Muslim district of Baghdad in an attack claimed by Islamic State.

The car detonated in the eastern district of Jamila, police say, as Iraqi government forces were preparing to declare victory over the Sunni Muslim militants of Islamic State more than 400 km further north in the city of Tal Afar.

Medics and police sources said eight people died and 25 were wounded.

Interior Ministry spokesman Brigadier General Saad Maan said four people were killed and 12 wounded, including two policemen.

Islamic State’s Amaq news agency said the bombing had been intended to target Shi’ite Muslims, but reported it took place in the neighbouring Sadr City district.

It was not immediately clear if a suicide bomber drove the vehicle to the target or if it was a parked car bomb, police sources said.

A nurse who was convicted of killing patients in Germany with overdoses of heart medication is now believed to have killed at least 84 people – and investigators believe the true scale of the killings could be larger.

Niels Hoegel was convicted in 2015 of two murders and two attempted murders at a clinic in the northwestern town of Delmenhorst.

But prosecutors have long said they believe he killed more people, last year putting the figure at 43 at least.

Predator control brings ecological haven in to limelight A remnant of foothill forest with rare limestone outcrops near Mt Somers is being protected thanks to the work of a local landowner and support from the Immediate Steps biodiversity fund.

The work will include a trapping programme to reduce rat, possum and stoat numbers to protect indigenous flora and fauna from predation.

Carey’s song reigned at the top spot in 1995 and 1996. Fonsi’s Despacito features Daddy Yankee, while Justin Bieber appears on the remix. The song’s video became the first video in YouTube history to reach 3 billion views. “This is a historic day for Latin music! I’m incredibly thankful for all of my fans and their amazing support.” Fonsi said.

Wee girl for Zuckerberg Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg and his wife are welcoming a new daughter in a post – where else – on Facebook.

Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan already have a toddler daughter, Max, born in 2015. They named their second child August. The couple posted a photo of the family, along with a letter they wrote to August hoping she will get to enjoy her childhood. They write “childhood is magical”, saying she only gets to be a child once “so don’t spend it worrying too much about the future”. Chan and Zuckerberg also wrote a letter to Max when she was born, talking about the world they hope to see her grow up in, with advances in science, medicine and access to education.

“At the moment they [increase to levies] have been passed and at the moment they do stand, but we’d like them to be reviewed by Government but it may take a little time for that to happen.”

Jo Mason, chief executive of NZbrokers, also said the cost of cover for methamphetamine damage in tenanted building would increase – by up to 56 per cent – for some properties, according to analysis.

“If we take the example of a 1970s farmhouse occupied by a farm worker with a replacement value of $230,000 which cost $944 to insure eight months ago, this will rise to $1478 in November – an increase of 56 per cent,” Mason said.

“While the fire service and EQC are essential factors in managing the risk of home ownership, it’s a real concern to see that this increase is going to hit many of those in lower value housing disproportionately higher.”

BNZ posts smaller-than-expected profit Bank of New Zealand, the local unit of National Australia Bank, posted a 1.8 per cent increase in net profit for the first nine months of the year as smaller charges on bad debt made up for largely flat income.

Net profit rose to $692 million in the nine months ended June 30 from $680 million, the lender’s quarterly disclosure statement shows. Impairment losses shrank to $42 million from $106 million a year earlier, making up for a dip in operating earnings as expenses rose 5.6 per cent to $698 million and offset flat operating income of $1.7 billion.

Net interest income slipped to $1.31 billion in the nine-month period from $1.32 billion a year earlier, while the bank’s loan book expanded to $78.15 billion as at

June 30 from $72.56 billion a year earlier. Of that, housing loans rose to $36.61 billion from $33.91 billion, and other term lending increased to $37.57 billion from $34.32 billion.

Earlier this month NAB noted an improvement in gross loans to assets in the June quarter, “mainly reflecting improved conditions for New Zealand dairy custom-

ers”, and $158 million of loans past 90 days due but not impaired plus a $545 million provision for bad debts amounted to 0.89 per cent of gross loans, compared to 0.99 per cent three months earlier.

BNZ’s June quarter disclosure statement said a recovery in farmgate returns for dairy farmer returned the majority of New Zealand farmers above breaking even but it was still “working closely with those customers for whom some level of financial pressure remains following the lower 2015 and 2016 pay-outs.”

BNZ’s term deposits increased to $30.43 billion as at June 30 from $26.8 billion a year earlier, while total deposits and other borrowing increased to $59.9 billion from $56.32 billion.

Methamphetamine is partly to blame for a rise in property insurance costs.

New figures show the cost to insure property could go up by more than 50 per cent over the next three months.

Runacres Insurance said prices are going up to cover the cost of methamphetamine damage to rental properties. Company managing director David Crick said fire service and EQC levies were also pushing up prices.

“From figures that we’ve looked at, an overall increase, somebody could [now] be looking at a 50 to 55 per cent increase on their premium for a property that could be worth $300,000 to $400,000.”

Fulltime jobs were found to be the most advertised role type in the year to June, while part-time job vacancies continued to flatten.

Job ads for casual/vacation, contract/temporary roles also continued to strengthen in July.

The hospitality and tourism industry is one of the fastest growing industries for job opportunities, according to job search site Seek.

The increase in job advertisements over the past three months has been driven by strong growth in tourism numbers, from both domestic and foreign visitors, Seek says.

From May to July, ads on Seek for the hospitality and tourism industry grew by 9 per cent, compared to the same period last year.

Seek New Zealand general manager Janet Faulding said the hospitality and tourism industry was the eleventh largest advertising industry on the site.

“Helping fuel job ad growth on Seek across the hospitality and tourism industry is increasing demand for professionals to service the rising number of tourists visiting New Zealand and an increase of Kiwis travelling domestically,” Faulding said.

According to Statistics New Zealand’s latest international travel and migration report, international visitors to New Zealand rose by 10 per cent in the year to June.

One-pot dinners for minimum fuss S

up the juices.

ometimes it takes a lot of pots and pans to turn out an evening meal, but with a bit of planning it’s possible to chop, stir and blend your ingredients and cook them all together in one go.

Minimum fuss, maximum appeal and very few dirty dishes.

Perfect.

Cauli and lentil curry

Easy creamy tortellini 500g beef tortellini 3-5 rashers diced bacon 1C frozen peas 1C thickened cream 1/2 C grated parmesan cheese Salt and cracked black pepper ■ Boil the tortellini in plenty of salted water according to packet directions and drain.

■ While the pasta is on the boil, fry the bacon in a small saucepan.

■ Add the peas and cream and simmer for about 5 minutes until the peas are cooked through.

■ Return the drained tortellini to the stove in its saucepan and add the cream sauce.

■ Stir through the parmesan cheese, salt and pepper.

■ Serve with an extra sprinkle of parmesan cheese.

Pumpkin and chickpea bake 1T olive oil 1 chorizo, finely chopped 1 red onion, chopped 1 red capsicum, seeded, sliced 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 2t rosemary leaves, chopped 200g sourdough bread, cut into chunks 750g butternut pumpkin, cubed 1/2 C finely grated parmesan 2 x 400g cans diced tomatoes 400g can chickpeas, rinsed, drained 1C water Chopped parsley to serve ■ Preheat oven to 180°C.

Easy creamy tortellini.

■ In a saucepan, heat oil on medium. Sauté chorizo for 2-3 minutes until golden.

■ Add onion, capsicum, garlic and rosemary. Sauté for 3-4 minutes until onions are tender.

■ Combine bread, and parmesan in a large bowl. Set aside.

■ Add pumpkin, tomatoes, chickpeas and water to a saucepan.

■ Cook on high, covered, for 10-12 minutes or until pumpkin is just tender. Season.

■ Transfer to a 10-cup baking dish.

■ Spread bread topping over.

■ Spray with olive oil and bake for 30-35 minutes or until topping is crisp.

■ Serve scattered with parsley. Accompany with salad, if desired.

Chicken with peppers

400g can chopped tomatoes, or use 4-6 fresh tomatoes 1/2 t sea salt 1/4 C sliced almonds Steamed greens and crusty bread, to serve ■ Heat the oil in an oven-proof frypan to medium.

■ Cook the peppers until well coloured on one side, then toss in the pan.

■ Add the garlic and vinegar, then immediately cover.

■ Cook for 1-2 minutes.

■ Add the chicken thighs in a single layer.

■ Pour in the tomatoes, season with salt and cover.

■ Cook for 30-40 minutes on low heat.

■ Stir to make sure the chicken is covered with the peppers and tomatoes.

■ Sprinkle with the almonds and grill for 10 minutes on high until browned.

■ Serve from the pan with steamed greens and crusty bread to mop

2T vegetable oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 garlic clove, finely chopped 2 1/2 cm piece fresh ginger, peeled and grated 2t ground coriander 2t ground cumin 1/2 t ground turmeric 1/3 C dried red lentils 150ml vegetable stock, hot 1 head cauliflower, cut into small florets 1 large carrot, peeled and diced 400ml tin coconut milk 3/4 C frozen green beans, thawed and drained 2T chopped fresh coriander leaves 1T lemon juice Salt and freshly ground black pepper Chopped fresh coriander leaves to garnish ■ Heat 1 1/2 tablespoons of the oil in a large saucepan.

■ Gently cook the onion for 10 minutes, stirring frequently, until soft and translucent.

■ Add the garlic, ginger, ground coriander, cumin and turmeric and cook for 2 minutes, stirring all the time.

■ Rinse the lentils, then stir them into the pan.

■ Pour in the stock, bring to the boil, then reduce the heat.

■ Cover and leave to gently simmer for 10 minutes.

■ Heat the remaining oil in a frying pan and fry the cauliflower for 2–3 minutes until lightly browned ■ Add to the lentil mixture with the carrot and coconut milk.

■ Bring the curry to a gentle simmer and cook for a further 10 minutes, or until the vegetables are tender.

■ Stir in the beans and cook for 3–4 minutes.

■ Stir in the chopped coriander and lemon juice.

■ Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

■ Spoon on to a warmed serving dish and garnish with extra coriander leaves.

African chicken stew 1T olive oil 1 (1.3kg) chicken, deboned and cut into bite-size pieces 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 onion, diced 1 large potato or sweet potato, diced 1t ground cumin 1t ground coriander seed 1t ground black pepper 1t crushed red chilli flakes 1t salt 1C (250ml) water 1/2 C (125g) unsalted peanut butter 1 (400g) tin chickpeas, drained and rinsed ■ In a large frying pan with a tight fitting lid, heat oil over medium high heat.

■ Add chicken and brown quickly.

Remove chicken from frying pan.

■ Reduce heat to medium low and add garlic, onion and potato to the frying pan.

■ Fry for 2 to 3 minutes.

■ Season with cumin, coriander, black pepper, chilli flakes and salt.

■ Mix in water, browned chicken and any accumulated juices.

■ Place lid on frying pan and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 10 to 15 minutes.

■ Remove lid and stir in the peanut butter and chickpeas.

■ Make sure the peanut butter is blended in.

■ Replace lid and simmer for 10 more minutes or until chicken is cooked through and potatoes are tender. Remove from heat, adjust seasoning and serve.

A big test for organisers

A week of sporting madness will soon take over Ashburton and other centres around the South Island as secondary schools send their sporting teams away for Winter Tournament Week.

Ashburton is to host two tournaments – the Junior Zone 4 Premiership Basketball Tournament and the South Island Mixed Hockey Tournament.

The basketball tournament is set to test Basketball Mid Canterbury’s organisational skills, with 40 teams (24 boys’ and 16 girls’), to do battle on the four courts of

the EA Networks Centre and the Oxford Street Stadium.

Due to the number of teams, games will start at 8am on Saturday, with the last round of matches tipping off at 8.15pm on the first two days.

The finals will be held at the EA Networks Centre on Tuesday at 7.30pm.

Mid Canterbury will be represented by three teams at the tournament, with Ashburton College entering a team in both the girls’ and boys’ draw, while Mount Hutt College have a side in the boys’ draw.

“It is going to be huge,” Bas-

ketball Mid Canterbury committee member, Mindy Morrison, said.

“As we are a small association we asked out in the community for people to help out with things like the score benches and the response was fantastic.”

The mixed hockey tournament will also see organisers putting in the hard yards, with the first two days of matches beginning at 8am, and the last matches beginning at 8pm.

The final is set to be played on September 8, beginning at 2pm.

Mount Hutt College will have a team attending the tourna-

ment, while the AshColl senior boys’ and girls’ hockey sides will head in opposite directions, going to Cromwell and Blenheim respectively.

Both the AshColl senior girls’ and senior boys’ sides will travel to Dunedin for their Premiership Zone 4 tournament.

The boys’ 1st XI will join them in Dunedin for the Linwood tournament, while the junior boys’ rugby side will travel to Greymouth.

Both schools will send a senior netball side to the South Island Secondary Schools’ Netball Tournament in Christchurch.

“She’s due to foal to Jakkalberry and then she’ll be going to Sweynesse,” he said.

Sharrock is also a part-owner of Gypsy Fair, who has been retired as the winner of seven races with her career highlight a victory in the Gr.3 Merial Metric Mile.

“She’s from a good family and she’ll be going to Reliable Man,” Sharrock said.

In the meantime, his racetrack focus is firmly on Saturday’s Hawke’s Bay meeting with stable star Kawi.

“He had a gallop on Saturday morning and he went over 1000 metres this morning and he worked well,” Sharrock said.

“We had a lot of rain and the track was quite testing. I would have loved a firmer surface for him, but he’s got the class and he’s done the work.

“I think he is ahead of where he was this time last year. I’m happy where we’re at.”

Sport Tutaia out, Falkner in Silver Ferns vice-captain Maria Tutaia will miss the remainder of the Netball Quad Series due to bereavement leave. Tutaia, who produced a MVP performance in the opening test against South Africa’s SPAR Proteas, will be replaced by debutant and NZU21s World Cup-winning shooter Monica Falkner. Falkner will join the team immediately in preparation for tonight’s match against the England Roses at The Trusts Arena, Auckland.

Hunt for new coaches

After several seasons of disappointing results and several winless years against other Mid Canterbury sides in the Watters Cup, Hampstead Rugby Club are on the hunt for new coaches for their A and B sides.

Club president Jim Henderson said last season’s co-coaches Regan Broker and Maurice McGoon had made the decision not to continue next season.

“I have always said we have a group of highly-talented, highly-skilled rugby players, but we have always struggled to get

them operating as a team,” he said.

“We will be looking for someone we can work with to develop the team with the support of the committee.”

During this year’s Watters Cup campaign, a regular theme of pre-match discussions was player numbers and Henderson admitted they had struggled with players having to work.

“A lot of our players work on the Saturday morning and it is tough when they have just finished work and you have to drag them off for four or five hours from their families to go off and

play in North Canterbury,” Henderson said.

“I have coached the team in the past and it can be a very challenging job. As a coach you shouldn’t have to be running around on a Saturday morning to put a team together.”

Henderson said they made the decision to advertise the job through the New Zealand Rugby Union to see if there was someone out there who was willing to take on the challenge, and that they did not feel there was anyone within the club who was quite at the level required.

“It will be a challenging role

and we are not expecting them to go out and win the Watters Cup next year, but we do need to improve,” he said.

“We’ve gotta do something, it is as simple as that. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result and that is what we have been doing over the past four or five years and we haven’t quite got there.

“It really is now or never for us.

I think if we have another season like we just had, then it would be just impossible to attract players and coaches, so we have gotta make the changes now.”

Tew defends absent ABs at Meads funeral New Zealand Rugby chief executive Steve Tew has defended the incumbent All Blacks’ absence from Sir Colin Meads’ funeral.

Meads, who played 133 games for New Zealand, was honoured at a service in Te Kuiti on Monday. The occasion was attended by many of rugby’s biggest names.

“Funerals are very personal things,” Tew said, when asked whether it was a policy or personal choice for the team.

“I’m surprised by that criticism. New Zealand Rugby was well represented [at the occasion] and during the service the

family thanked us personally for the support we’ve been able to offer.”

Tew noted the All Blacks had worn Sir Colin’s number - 583 - on their jerseys for Saturday’s Bledisloe Cup test against Australia in Dunedin and Sam Whitelock’s No 5 jersey was presented to the Meads family as a mark of respect.

“The guys thought about Colin

long and hard during the week,” Tew said. “Most wouldn’t have known him, because he was a generation away, so there was some work done to let them know of his contribution and what he achieved.

“I’m comfortable that those of us who wanted to be at his funeral and pay respects did so, and those that didn’t, did it in another way.”

All White sent home All Whites defender Dane Ingham has been sent home from the team camp in Auckland, due to fitness issues. In a move that coach Anthony Hudson admitted was unprecedented in his career, the young fullback was asked to leave after failing a series of fitness and conditioning tests.

Ingham was a surprise selection for the games against Fiji in March, and then started two matches at the Confederations Cup, against Mexico and Portugal.

Filipo on Lions’ bench Controversial Wellington rugby player Losi Filipo has been named on the bench for the Lions in their next Mitre 10 Cup clash on Thursday night.

The Wellington rugby player was convicted for assault in 2016 after public outcry at a judge’s decision to discharge him without conviction for assaulting four people. Filipo was yesterday named on the bench for the Wellington Lions for their match in Rotorua against Bay of Plenty. In 2016, Filipo was sentenced to nine months’ supervision for assaulting four people, including two women.
