District court news P4, 6

Police are investigating a report of the theft of around 500 dairy cows from a farm south of Ashburton. Pennie Saunders, who works on the farm, said about 500 had been taken out of the herd of around 1300. She said the cows were very close to calving and each animal was worth more than $1000 each. The theft was reported to Ashburton police last week. She was unsure whether they were taken gradually or all at once.

At the time, Methven senior police constable Mike Seque said he had followed up a number of leads from members of the public but they had not resulted in any positive leads. Police said they received a report on August 25 that up to 500 cows had been stolen from an Ashburton farm.
