Dramatic scenes unfolded in Tinwald on Tuesday night as police arrested two people in possession of weapons and methamphetamine, as well as cash that they had taken in a robbery earlier that night.

A 23-year-old Kaiapoi woman and 30-year-old Rolleston man had allegedly met up with someone they knew in Tinwald, confronted them with a firearm and robbed them of money when they

were stopped in their tracks by police shortly after 8.30pm.

Police pulled over their silver car near Lushingtons garden centre on the main road, arrested the two individuals and searched their vehicle.

Residents reported seeing dozens of armed police officers involved in the operation, which caused the Tinwald bridge to close for several minutes.

The road was cleared shortly before 9pm.

dent had not put the public’s safety at risk.

The robbery victim and the two offenders all knew each other and had met up in their cars on the side of the road when the robbery took place.

Both offenders were due to appear in Christchurch District Court yesterday.

The woman was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and supplying methamphetamine and the man was charged with presenting a weapon and supplying methamphetamine.

Police before social media

Locals are being prompted to contact police before resorting to Facebook when it comes to crime.

Following recent incidents in the area, police have delivered a reminder that crime can only be fully investigated if it is reported to them as soon as possible.

A police spokesperson said although social media is a useful tool for sharing and gathering information, crime in New Zealand cannot be reported via social media.

“Police do use social media as a tool for crime prevention, crime solving and reducing victimisations … but it is only one tool of many used by police when investigating and preventing crime.

“All members of the public are encouraged to report crime or suspicious behaviour to police as soon as possible. It will help to protect themselves and others.”

In New Zealand, crime can be reported in two main ways – by phone or in person.

Police advise that crime cannot generally be reported online or via email “as you have to speak with a police officer so that we can get all the right information”.

In an emergency, members of the public should dial 111.

In a non-emergency situation crime can be reported by phoning or visiting the nearest police station – either Ashburton, Rakaia or Methven locally.

Those concerned about their identity can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, which is an independent, third-party organisation that guarantees complete anonymity.

Earlier this year the same message was delivered after an overnight series of robberies and thefts in Tinwald was reported on social media before police were fully informed.

Player to be deported after serving jail term A former Mid Canterbury rugby player who was jailed last year for attempted rape will be deported back to Fiji when he is released on parole next month.

Kolinio Yabia Tamanitoakula, 26, a Fijian national who was living in Ashburton at the time of his offending, was jailed for three years, four months and two weeks last year, after pleading guilty to a charge of assault with intent to commit sexual violation.

Tamanitoakula had only been in New Zealand a short time before assaulting the woman on

October 2, 2016, after a representative rugby match in Ruatoria where he had appeared for the Mid Canterbury Heartland Rugby side.

He appeared before the parole board at Hawke’s Bay Prison earlier this month, having served just over a year in jail and was informed he would be deported back to Fiji.

The board was told that Tamanitoakula was at low risk of further sexual offending and a psychologist advised that he needed no further treatment.

The victim had been walking alone in the Gisborne CBD on the night of October 12. Tamanitoakula had been walking with a group of associates who had been “yelling and whistling” at the woman as she walked in front of them.

Tamanitoakula followed her alone and called out to her but she ignored him.

As she crossed the Peel St bridge he grabbed her by the arms and pushed her down a flight of steps into Kelvin Park.

He then forced her to the

ground and kissed her. He pulled down her trousers and tried to rape her. The victim was then able to get away when a passing car distracted Tamanitoakula.

During his sentencing, defence counsel Leighvi Maynard told the Gisborne District Court Tamanitoakula had only been in New Zealand a short time before assaulting the woman.

He had previously been of good character and had no criminal convictions in Fiji.

He accepted he had caused considerable pain and distress for

the victim and her family and accepted that his actions had been “indefensible”, Maynard said.

His client was not used to drinking alcohol but was intoxicated in the company of teammates.

“It is no exaggeration to say that his actions were utterly out of character for him.”

Crown prosecutor Jo Rielly said Tamanitoakula’s level of intoxication was no excuse for committing a significant offence that would have ongoing consequences for him and his victim.

1080 drop in Rakaia catchment

The Department of Conservation (DOC) is set to begin a 1080 aerial drop on 13,700 hectares of public conservation land in the upper tributaries of the Rakaia catchment in September.

The planned aerial 1080 pest control operation in the upper Wilberforce and Mathias valleys is aimed at reducing possum numbers to protect the rare and highly significant kaikawaka/mountain cedar and Hall’s totara forest that grows there.

DOC North Canterbury operations manager Kingsley Timpson said these forests are nationally significant.

However, there is growing concern from hunters, fishers, farmers and others who utilise the area that the poison will find its way into the Wilberforce and Mathias rivers, both of which feed the Rakaia River.

“Most of the bait will be eaten by possums and any remaining will break down naturally and biodegrade,” Timpson said.

“It’s possible a small number of cereal baits will enter waterways but 1080 is highly soluble in water and would quickly dilute to minute quantities that would be undetectable in the Rakaia River catchment.”

The required permission has been received from the Medical Officer of Health and the remain-

ing DOC/EPA consents are in the process of being finalised, he said, ahead of the proposed start date of September 1, he said.

The 1080 cereal baits (1.5 grams/ kilogram toxic loading) will be dropped along precise grid-lines using GPS tracking to ensure even distribution at 2km/ha.

“This equates to about four to six baits dropped in an area the size of a doubles tennis court.”

DOC, in consultation with the Game Animal Council and New Zealand Deerstalkers Association (NZDA), has agreed to use deer repellent-coated 1080 cereal baits at this site due to the red deer herd

of significance to game hunters.

DOC has also agreed to an NZDA proposal to exclude aerial 1080 and trap an area of about 2200ha in the upper Wilberforce to see if possums can be reduced to acceptable levels using this method.

The kaikawaka and Hall’s totara

forest, which also includes mountain toatoa and broadleaf, grows in an area of the central South Island not colonised by beech forest – also known as the beech gap, he said.

“Possums are defoliating trees and causing extensive dieback particularly of Hall’s totara and southern rata but also of kaikawaka. Other palatable plant species vulnerable to possum browse will also benefit from possum control and the potential poisoning of stoats will protect forest and alpine birds as they nest this spring and summer.”

The operation will include the areas of kaikawaka and Hall’s totara forest treated in the last aerial 1080 operation in 2012, he said.

The 2012 operation was a joint DOC and former Animal Health Board (now TB free New Zealand) operation over 25,000 hectares and had the dual purpose of protecting the forest and eliminating TB from cattle, deer and wildlife.

“Monitoring shows that possums are at levels that are damaging the kaikawaka and Hall’s totara forest.”

Possums were monitored at 5 per cent residual trap catch (RTC) in 2017, up from 3 per cent in 2013.

DOC will monitor possum levels after the aerial 1080 operation and also in the trapped area to determine how to best proceed in the region in future.

Council 15th biggest spender on entertainment, food By sue newman

When it comes to catering, entertainment and gifts, the Ashburton District Council is one of New Zealand’s big spenders.

Figures released by the New Zealand Taxpayers’ organisation show $82,885 of taxpayers’ money was spent in the past financial year on entertainment, gifts and catering. And that gave the district a high spending rank of 15th out

of 67 local authorities.

This puts Ashburton in second place in Canterbury for spending across those three categories, ahead of several larger Canterbury councils.

While Christchurch was top Canterbury spender and second highest in the country, it also ranked as the local authority with the second largest population base. The taxpayers’ report puts Christchurch City’s entertain-

ment, gifts and catering expenses at $305,208. Ashburton ranks 34th out of 67 local authorities in terms of population.

Waimakariri ($77,905), Timaru ($44,970) and Selwyn ($9060) all have higher populations than Ashburton, but have a lower entertainment, gift and catering spend.

Catering is considered any food-related expense for meetings, morning and afternoon teas, workshops and trainings, as

budgeted annually by the council.

Ashburton’s catering came in at $66,142, but not all of this was for councillor morning and afternoon teas and lunches.

Councillors do not dine luxuriously on meeting days. Morning tea is normally biscuits and cheese and afternoon tea is plain, bought biscuits. Lunch varies but usually includes sandwiches, savouries and a plate of small cakes.

The Waitaki District Council spent $25,958, Hurunui $12,897, Mackenzie $9307, Selwyn $9060, Kaikoura $8455 and Waimate $3729.

Working towards a healthier workplace

Smokefree is already part of the company’s culture, with a challenge laid down to staff each year to stop smoking and the healthy eating component was covered through education.

The current winner is Matt Bird.

“The programme fits in well with where we’re at as a company.

Compliance is everywhere, but this is something that’s for staff.

We want happy, healthy staff and we want to show we value them,” Casey said.

The programme has been driven by staff members Emma Prichard and Jane Jolly.

Workwell is a programme designed to improve the health and wellbeing of employees. It involves a step-by-step support and mentoring from an assigned WorkWell adviser with businesses working to achieve accreditation over three levels.

When ACL wanted to do something positive for staff, chief executive Gary Casey decided offering them a programme designed to improve their health would be a good place to start.

He decided the Community and Public Health WorkWell programme fitted the bill and called in health promoter Carly McDowell.

Staff undertook an anonymous survey on nutrition, physical activity, alcohol consumption and a range of other health-related issues. A three tier programme was then designed that fitted staff needs, an in-house WorkWell committee was formed and the project was under way.

And yesterday the company was recognised for its efforts in achieving bronze level accreditation, the first company in Ashburton to do so.

Free dental care snapped up locally An Ashburton dental practice offering free sessions for low-income people as part of a national initiative is already fully booked.

It is the first time Dentistry on Parkside has taken part in the Smile NZ free dental day, which is run in partnership with the New Zealand Dental Association and Southern Cross Health Trust.

Parkside dentists Arun Prabu Velusamy and Phodiso Tuwane will be volunteering their time, along with oral health therapist Amanda Allen and Joanne Lee, who will be on hand to give advice and help educate.

Free dental days around the country next month are open to people with a community services card as part of the Smile NZ initiative.

The 30-minute appointments will include pain relief and treatment of infections, extractions (except wisdom teeth), simple restorations, examinations, x-rays and scale and polish.

If more extensive work is required, patients will be given an estimate to take to Winz.

Parkside’s principal dentist Michael Holdaway said the clinic chose to participate in the free dental day as oral health was important to overall general health and wellbeing. It was also a way of

giving back to the community.

“There is a high need for dental care in Ashburton as we have no fluoridation in our water and a lack of awareness and education about oral health.”

Holdaway said all primary and preschool children in New Zealand could access free dental care through community dental services. Teens up to 18 years can be seen by a dentist or oral health therapist for free.

The Smile NZ free dental day is in its fourth year and this year’s event will see 78 dentists across the country treating 935 patients; 55 practices from Auckland to Invercargill are participating.

The dentists donate their time while the Southern Cross Health Trust provides funding to the dental practices for the use of their premises, equipment and dental assistants.

Southern Cross Health Trust chief executive Terry Moore says appointments for Smile NZ are filled each year, showing the high level of demand for dental care among low income adults.

“There are virtually no government subsidies for adult dental care, apart from some services provided by Winz and some DHBs. Combine this with the cost of care, and it means dental

A long-serving Ashburton Presbyterian church minister has been forced to sever his pastoral ties with the parish he has ministered to for more than 20 years.

David Brown took up the position of minister of St Andrew’s Presbytery in January 1998 but in April his pastoral ties with the church were dissolved due to a breakdown in that relationship.

Alpine Presbytery moderator Reverend Anne Stewart said

a complaint had been made concerning Brown and this resulted in a Presbyterian Church disciplinary process. While he continues to be a minister of the Presbyterian Church of Aotearoa New Zealand, his association with the Ashburton church ceased at the end of April, she said.

The presbytery was committed to supporting the parish as it transitioned towards a new future, Stewart said.

“We acknowledge that this has

not been an easy period for St Andrew’s.”

The church’s disciplinary process is a quasi-judicial process which is overseen by a lawyer.

It is similar to a civil court case in that evidence is heard, the respondent has an opportunity to present evidence in support of their position and the commission makes a determination based on the evidence before it.

Decisions can be appealed.

Brown was given an opportunity by the Guardian to com-

ment on his departure from St Andrew’s but did not respond.

He was ordained in 1987 and served in two North Island parishes before moving to Ashburton. He served as co-convenor of the business work group of the administration and finance committee of the Council of Assembly until 2004, and was Moderator of Ashburton Presbytery, 2003.

Mother, child found dead The bodies of a mother and child have been found inside a home on the Central Coast of NSW in a suspected murdersuicide.

Emergency services were called to the home on Kilpa Rd in the suburb of Wyongah just before 2pm yesterday.

Inside the home they found the bodies of Erica Bon, a 47-year-old mother and a nine-year-old boy, Lachlan.

Bond, who was well-known in the community and a passionate golfer, shared several posts about depression in the lead up to her death.

In one of her last Facebook posts she shared video about suicide prevention.

Another message shared on July 10 read: “Depression is REAL. People can smile all day and still be broken inside.”

Other photos posted online show that Bond was a loving mum to her young son.

However, loving family photos documenting trips to the zoo and the local golf course painted a very different picture to the messages shared on Facebook.

Bond was a well known golfer in her local community and worked at Kooindah Waters Golf Club as a golf shop and drinks cart assistant.

“An extremely good golfer, her handicap fluctuates between 4-7 and she is the current ladies club champion,” the club’s website states.

“Erica’s outgoing personality will ensure all your golfing needs are catered for and if on the golf course she will ensure you will not go hungry or thirsty.”

Officers from Tuggerah Lakes established a crime scene and detectives were investigating.

Police could not comment

Erica Bon shared posts about depression recently. on the cause of death but did confirm officers were not looking for any other people relating to the incident.

Neighbours reportedly heard a woman’s cries for help yesterday and one told The Daily Telegraph the family kept to themselves.

“I’ve heard them have a few fights occasionally but nothing serious, I didn’t think,” the un-

named neighbour said.

Lachlan was a pupil at Tuggerawong Public School and the school’s principal Grant McFarland wrote a message in response to the deaths on so-

“I wanted to confirm that the school will be open tomorrow (today) and that we are ensuring that significant additional support is available for any student who may need it tomorrow and over the coming days.

“It is your personal decision about what sensitive discussions you may choose to have with your children tonight.

“The school will have a carefully planned approach to supporting all students tomorrow and moving forward.

“The staff and I appreciate the tremendous support of our parents and our broader school community at this challenging time.

“Our heartfelt thoughts are with our much valued student’s family and friends at this time.”

Tributes from heartbroken parents were then posted on the school’s Facebook page.

“So very sad. My daughter is heartbroken,” wrote one parent.

“Lots of love and support to all our beautiful teachers during this very sensitive and hard time.”

“My thoughts are with everyone, the family, our gorgeous children, our amazing teachers, aides and office staff, and our beautiful parents at this very emotional time,” wrote another.

“Our community is strong.

Together we can all get through this.”

NSW Police said the investigation was in its early stages and a report was being prepared for the coroner.

Wolf’s head left in public swimming pool Police in northern Spain launched an investigation after a dead wolf’s head and tail were left in a public swimming pool in a protest by farmers over attacks by wolves on their livestock.

The Guardia Civil’s wildlife protection unit is trying to find out who dumped the grisly remains at an open-air pool in the village of Infiesto, in the Picos de Europa mountain range of eastern Asturias.

The wolf is a protected species in Asturias, but angry protesters blocked country roads near the Picos de Europa National Park at the weekend, demanding more support to save their sheep, goats and calves from apparent wolf attacks.

Notify police, before social media W

hen did we get to the point that it was more important to report a crime on Facebook than it was to the police?

I must have missed when that memo came through, because it seems it’s becoming more and more the norm with stories coming in nationally about victims of crime not picking up the phone and calling the police to report an incident.

Surely, we haven’t lost that much faith in our police service, who are out on there on the frontline, doing the job every day, that we believe that there is likely to be a better outcome by sharing the news and information with our

friends than the police.

Perhaps we have, but if that is the case then there should be some serious concerns in the community about what the future might involve when it comes to crime in our district.

A lot of the issues that would normally warrant police attention are posted to community Facebook pages.

Groups set up for individuals within any community to remain informed of what is happening around their region – fantastic in theory and a great step in ensuring safety in numbers, but when the decision is made to post on one of these instead of phoning it through to the police, it’s a decision that could likely put other people in jeopardy too.

And one which could make individuals targeted by those who dabble in the black hole that is otherwise known as crime.

By reporting a crime to police, you are showing that you’re not putting up with it.

That you’re fighting back and not standing for anyone’s rubbish.

Yet, when the decision is made to not report an incident to the police and instead share the information to a social media page, you automatically make yourself a target for future offenders because there is a high possibility that whatever they try to do won’t be reported.

So, where’s the sense in that?

Our police force is well equipped with the technology and ability to find and bring to justice a criminal who walks in our midst.

Yes, it can be frustrating to call the police due to a low level of policing numbers and the process of actually reporting a crime, but wouldn’t you rather go through

that to ensure the best possible chance of justice being served and to minimise the risk of your mistake in not reporting having a severe impact on someone else?

It’s pretty simple people. If you come across something untoward, suspicious or come face-to-face with a criminal, pick up the phone and ring the police.

Once you’re done there, then post away on social media to your heart’s content.

At least by then the police will be aware of what has happened and be better equipped to look for the potential leads that could result in capturing anyone we don’t want lurking on our streets if they’re up to no good.

Ron, something’s burning. I can smell smoke, something’s burning.”

After initially refuting anything was amiss, the evidence soon clearly presented itself when a floorboard burst into flames.

Ron, eager to impress and protect his young girlfriend, gallantly removed the offending piece of timber from the floor of the old 1924 Model T Ford farm hack and threw it in the creek!

Such are the early courting memories of Ashburton’s Barbara Jaine, who recently celebrated her 80th birthday and let the family in on a secret.

But first let’s wind the clock back around 17 years.

I was filling in “on-duty” over at the Plains fire museum one open day. It wasn’t something I usually did, but was as it turned out, quite fortuitous.

A gentleman wandered in and we struck up a bit of a conversation.

“I’ve got a bit of old stuff,” he said.

“What, fire engines?” I asked.

“No, just some old Model T Ford bits down on the farm.”

His name was Ron Jaine and, with my usual persistent cajoling, I managed to get him to lead me to said bits, straight after I had locked up.

If you’re gonna do it, do it NOW is my motto.

Being an old vehicle buff, I had always wanted a fire engine of the truly vintage era, and although this hadn’t been one, from Ron’s description (there was no surviving bodywork to speak of) I figured it might just offer the ideal platform on which to build one.

Off down towards the coast we trundled until we came to a farm near Waterton. Down a track we went and lo and behold there was a very old and dilapidated, collapsed in fact, shed, under which various bits of iron resembling old car parts were protruding.

Ron and Barbara’s son Martin had completely dismantled it many years ago.

A bit more sweet-talking and we did a deal with a promise that when it was “done”, I’d take him for a ride in it.

Well it wasn’t long before the ribbing started. A relative saw the heap of parts in my shed and declared it to be, and I quote, “a piece of sh*t that a piece of sh*t shat on”.

This provided exactly the motivation I needed to sort everything and I started by getting the chassis and front and rear axles and spring sets totally dismantled, sand-blasted, primed and painted.

Things started to look much smarter and there began a build which has gone on way too long.

sociation with the fire service and when his old workplace was being demolished, the previous version of Farmers Department store building provided some timber for the frame on which I built the rest of the body. I thought it’d be a small but nice touch to include in the project.

Brigades back in the day were operated under their local borough or city councils, and fire appliances were often built up on running gear to a local specification.

This afforded me plenty of licence to create something out of my own head. The body came together using plenty of the “eye” method and for every hour spent building, there were multiple other hours standing back and visualising or scheming.

Several years ago I tracked down local man Chris Sheppard who I was told was the Model T Ford go-to guru. I was not told wrong. This man would be the country’s foremost authority I reckon.

I took my sorry rusty pile of engine parts out to his work-

shop and immediately spotted a freshly reconditioned block with new pistons under a cover.

“What’s that,” I enquired.

“That’s Plan B,” came the reply. I soon convinced Chris to promote it to Plan A and we were under way. He turned out a beautiful motor for me and tried gallantly to explain what he was doing every step of the way in great detail. I’m sorry Chris, I didn’t retain much of it. You are the man!

Last year I received a telephone call. “You don’t know who I am do you?”

It was Barbara Jaine, wanting to book her upcoming 80th birthday at Aeroview and “sit in the Model T”.

The very same vehicle she inherited with her new husband back in the day when they first met.

So it was time to pull finger.

Over the past two months I took it into Panelcraft and got the thing painted, at last. I couldn’t let Barbara down.

If it was going to happen, it was time to muster the resources and

get on with it.

There is still a bit to do, bonnet, windscreen and rear guards are coming after I’ve found some more loot down the back of the couch.

Jeff Harvey applied the glorious A.V.F.B on the side panel (Aeroview Vintage Fire Brigade, not to be confused with Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade ... a bit cheeky, I know), and we are nearly there.

Barbara, who first saw it in its latest incarnation last weekend, along with family who had gathered from all over New Zealand and Australia, declared her birthday could not have been more perfect.

“Ron would have been really pleased.”

Job done. Well, nearly.

Water champion praised for work The tireless efforts of Mid Canterbury water champion Peter Lowe have been recognised by Environment Canterbury.

The sheep, deer and arable farmer near Hinds received an outstanding contribution award from ECan chairman Steve Lowndes at a council meeting for his work in water management.

Among his many achievements, he helped set up and lead the Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) Pilot Working Party to investigate artificial recharging to replenish groundwater levels, restore flows in coastal drains, and improve water quality in the underlying shallow aquifer.

The MAR trial started two years ago and was the first of its type in New Zealand, earning international attention. After receiving positive results from the trial, Lowe assembled a Hekeao/Hinds Managed Aquifer Recharge Governance Group to expand the concept from a single pilot site to a network of 17 sites across the catchment.

At the meeting, Lowndes acknowledged the contribution that Lowe had made to championing sustainable water management in Mid Canterbury.

“Over the last few years there has been a significant shift in the way in the way the Hinds/Hekeao community understands and manages its water, and this shift has largely been led by Peter. Peter works tirelessly, constantly working to bring people together to try a different approach to water management.’’

Lowndes said Lowe had worked hard to develop a common understanding between landowners, local runanga and ECan and was instrumental in welcoming the zone delivery team into the community to help

Lowe said the award should be shared among many people.

“I see this as an award for all of the Hinds Plains and Mid Canterbury area. The Hinds Plains community has recognised we have

a water quality problem and they have been working towards addressing it.”

He said Ecan staff and the Ashburton Water Zone Committee deserved praise for the work they had put into water management.

Mid Canterbury’s second managed aqui-

fer recharge site is due to be comissioned on September 23.

The Hinds site is expected to help recharge the underground water source that feeds it as well as nearby wells and reduce nitrate concentrations.

■ YOUNG FARMERS

Workshops help others recognise cries for help The psychological distress of rural youth is going to be brought into the open in a central South Island workshop after a rise in suspected suicide deaths.

To get young people talking about mental health, Young Farmers is holding a further five GoodYarn workshops across the country. Workshops by the organisation for young farmers will be held in the Taranaki/Manawatu, Tasman, Aorangi and East Coast regions during October.

The workshops are designed to help people identify the signs of mental illness and seek support.

Young Farmers spokeswoman Megan Bates said it was important that people had the skills to recognise if a friend, family member, neighbouring farmer or customer was struggling.

Data released by the chief coroner last week shows New Zealand’s suicide rate has risen for the fourth year in a row.

The provisional statistics indicate 668 people took their lives in the 2017-18 year and the highest number of suicides was recorded in the 20-24 age group. Suicides have increased in Southland, Canterbury, Hawke’s Bay and Gisborne.

“These figures are a tragedy. We need to keep educating people to spot the signs that someone close to them may want to take their own life,” Bates said.

Young Farmers organised 10 GoodYarn workshops from Whangarei to Gore last

November after a challenging spring.

The organisation has 80 clubs nationally and members meet regularly.

“The aim of all of those things is to get people who often work in isolated jobs off farm and socialising,” said Bates.

Venues for the October workshops will be confirmed later. October 11 is the date set for a workshop in the Aorangi region, which includes clubs in Five Forks, Foothills, Glenavy/Waimate, Hinds, MacKenzie, Methven, Milford/Clandeboye, Pendarves, Upper Waitaki and Timaru.

Kiwi ploughmen face hard ground at worlds

Timaru ploughman Bob Mehrtens will try to lift his performance another step in the podium this weekend at the world ploughing championships in south-west Germany.

Mehrtens was runner-up in the reversible event at the last world championships in Kenya last year and will represent New Zealand’s tiny team of him and conventional ploughman Ian Woolley from Blenheim.

Woolley was seventh in the Kenya event.

The world’s best ploughmen and women from 30 countries have assembled at the Herzog von Württemberg Einsiedel farm estate in Kirchentellinsfurt, BadenWürttemberg. Germany is hosting its fourth world event at the estate about 30 kilometres south of Stuttgart.

The international competition for stubble ploughing starts on September 1 and the grass ploughing the following day on aeolian loess-loam soils.

Europe has been dry since April, but the area received some thunder showers lately.

The New Zealand ploughmen have been training on plots set aside for practise in the week leading up to the event.

This has not been without its challenges as Woolley was advised by a plough inspection team that his plough failed the rules

because of a plough wheel attached to a hydraulic linkage arm.

This was challenged, but head stewards advised the decision stood and the wheel will not be used.

Woolley has also had to contend with weld repairs to his plough after hitting rocks.

New Zealand’s support team said in email updates the hard ground remained “plough-able’’, but teams were having difficulties with the dry conditions.

Both ploughmen run Kverneland ploughs with Mehrtens operating a Ford tractor and Woolley a John Deere.

The Einsiedel Estate has wheat, rape, maize and beets cultivated in deep arable soils with a loess layer. The estate’s history began in the 15th century when Count Eberhard V founded a stud farm in a 300-hectare clearing.

The hunting-loving lord built a small castle near the stud farm, but today only one wing of the castle remains. In 1823 the clearing and the remains of the castle became the private property of the King of Württemberg and are still maintained as part of the Württemberg estate.

Rotorua’s Colin Millar was re-elected as chairman of World Ploughing for a fourth year.

M. bovis to blame for drop in farm sales?

Canterbury had the largest decline in farm sales nationally for the three months ending July.

With 26 fewer farms changing hands than the same period a year ago, Canterbury led 14 regions in recording the most substantial decline in sales followed by Auckland, down by 12 sales.

The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) did not advance a theory for the Canterbury decline, but noted that the presence of the mycoplasma bovis cattle disease would have a bearing on fewer sales.

Half of the regions recorded increases in

farm sales, led by 24 extra sales in Manawatu/Wanganui and another 14 in Waikato.

Nationally, there were 397 farm sales compared with 392 farm sales for the three months ending July last year.

So far this year the 1472 farms sold are 15.4 per cent down on previously, with 2.9 per cent fewer dairy farms, 8.7 per cent fewer finishing farms, 21.7 per cent fewer arable farms and 21.9 per cent fewer grazing farms.

The median price per hectare for all farms sold in the three months to July was $21,302 compared with $27,158.

REINZ rural spokesman Brian Peacocke said farm sales data over the three months was little changed from a year ago. Sales ex-

pectations within the rural sector were cautiously optimistic, albeit tempered by likely government changes putting more pressure on employing staff, he said.

“As anticipated for the mid-winter when calving is getting under way and farmers are preparing for lambing, sales volumes in all categories apart from forestry show a distinct reduction for the specific month of July 2018.’’

Peacocke said farm sales would be balanced by a mild winter so far although intensive grazing operations would be light on rainfall.

Product prices were strong for lamb, venison and horticulture, solid for beef, dairy and forestry and low for wool.

“Mycoplasma bovis continues to be a strong point of focus across the country,” he said.

Dairy sales were quiet for most regions apart from Waikato.

Despite a drop in values, REINZ expects more dairy farms could go on the market because farmers were ageing and frustrated by labour difficulties.

Sales activity for finishing properties was solid in Canterbury and there was a “simmering’’ of arable sales and grazing transactions were quiet.

The median price per hectare for 39 dairy farms sold nationally was $31,881 for the three months ending July, compared with $36,332 from 36 properties a year ago.

Tenants’ woes revealed in new report It is time for property managers to be properly regulated in New Zealand, say the authors of a report released today.

The study by Anglican Advocacy, titled A Decade Overdue, says many of the problems experienced by landlords and tenants in this country can be linked to property managers, who are not required to be licensed or accredited.

The Government says it shares some of the concerns about the sector. It will not rule out regulation, but says it will not be included in rental reforms outlined earlier this week.

The industry is resisting reform, saying the highly critical report is not representative of the property management sector.

The Anglican Advocacy report compiles dozens of first-hand, anonymous accounts from tenants and landlords about negligence, deceit, discrimination, privacy breaches and dishonesty by property managers.

Tenants spoke of surprise fees imposed by management companies which were not included in written agreements, and failure

by some managers to lodge their bond. In one unusual case, a tenant complained that a property manager had mysteriously made all of the tenants’ beds during an inspection at which they were not present.

“One of the most common things was a level of deceit or misinformation – not giving accurate information, not passing on information between landlords and tenants, but also incredible delays in sorting out maintenance and problems around the property,” said Anglican Advocacy director Jolyon White.

He said property managers were responsible for millions of dollars in rent and billions of dollars in property, yet they faced none of the regulations imposed on real estate agents.

“The main reform that we think is necessary is to have a regulatory body for property management, so that they have a code of conduct that they sign up to, so that they have training that they have to undertake, and they have the ability to be sanctioned and have their licence taken away from them.”

Harts buy Hansells for $15m Billionaire Graeme Hart and his son Harry bought Hansells Food Group for $15 million in their creation of a new local food empire.

Hansells’ management started looking for a buyer in October last year and entered into a sale and purchase agreement on June 1 to sell the assets and liabilities for $15m, financial statements lodged with the Companies Office show.

The Auckland-based company had accumulated losses of $66.5m

by March 31 and was trading with

negative equity of $28.4m.

The assets held for sale were valued at $39.9m as at March 31, including $14.1m of property, plant and equipment, $10.8m of inventories and $11.4m in receivables.

The firm also came with $26.5m of liabilities, of which $5.8m was a loan from Scottish Pacific, $7.4m was in trade payables, and $5.2m were from related party payables.

Discontinued businesses generated a positive operating cash flow of $2.4m in the year.

The food ingredients business

was rolled into Water & Wild, an entity set up by the Harts in three separate deals to buy Hubbard Foods and the Gregg’s sauce unit.

Water & Wild is fronted by Harry Hart, who owns 33 per cent of the ultimate parent, and backed by Graeme Hart with 67 per cent.

Hansells has been a perennial underperformer, repeatedly filing accounts tagged by its auditor.

It reported a loss of $20.3m in the year ended March 31, compared to a loss of $6.8m a year earlier.

The association has about 100 members – a minority of the estimated 1200 property management companies around New Zealand.

Parliament considered regulating property managers in 2007 along with real estate agents, but decided against it despite strong support from the real estate industry.

Since then, there has been significant growth of small, unqualified property management companies.

“That was a mistake,” White said. “While we’re reviewing tenancy laws now, I think it would be a tragedy to repeat the same mistake that’s left so many vulnerable people hurt.”

BK banned from hiring migrants Antares Restaurant Group, the parent company which owns and operates Burger King in New Zealand, has been banned from hiring migrant workers for a year.

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment put the company on its stand-down list for breaching the Minimum Wage Act. It is now banned from getting new visas for migrant workers for a year.

Unite Union welcomed the ban, saying it came after the fast food operator failed to pay a salaried manager the minimum wage.

“This is a large high-profile corporation and shows that this is not just a problem for small restaurants and fruit pickers – it goes right across most sectors and company sizes,” Unite Union national secretary Gerard Hehir said.

“Employers who steal from

their employees need to be sent a very clear message. Banning them from employing vulnerable migrant workers is a good start.

“If an employer is not able to guarantee the most basic minimum conditions allowed by law, they should not be able to hire vulnerable workers.”

Hehir said the union was concerned existing Burger King workers would now no longer be able

to renew their visas in the next 12 months.

Last month Burger King was ordered to pay an Auckland woman $3500 after being found to have breached the Minimum Wage Act by the Employment Relations Authority (ERA).

The ERA found Burger King failed to pay Drew Desai minimum wage on three occasions during her employment.

Desai was employed at Burger King from March 27, 2015 to October 6, 2017 where she worked in their New Lynn restaurant until she resigned.

Burger King workers have this year been on a series of strikes petitioning for higher pay and better rights. Burger King workers are said to be amongst the lowest paid in the fast food industry.

Warm seafood salad

Serves 4 500g tarakihi fillets (but also works well with blue cod, gurnard, hoki, orange roughy, moki and alfonsino) 12 fresh mussels 1/2 C wine 1/4 lemon juice 6 assorted lettuce leaves 80g spinach leaves, couple of bunches 1/2 C chopped parsley 1/2 C chopped chives 1T whole grain mustard 2T olive oil ■ Steam fish in the wine for 7 minutes (allow 12 minutes if frozen), then remove and add the mussels.

■ Steam until the shells open. Reserve the wine.

■ Steam or microwave the spinach leaves until they are just beginning to wilt.

■ Break or cut the cooked fish into bite-sized pieces and remove the mussels from their shells.

Place them in a serving bowl with the lettuce, spinach, parsley and chives.

■ Use the wine used to steam the mussels and fish to make a

dressing with the mustard and olive oil.

■ Toss with the other ingredients while they are still warm.

www.guardianonline.co.nz Ashburton Bridge Club The debate of opening weak or strong 2’s is an ongoing discussion and partnerships must decide what works best for them.

The one point about which all agree, is that opening with a weak 2 bid makes it much more difficult for the opposition to find their best fit, should they hold game points between them.

With this deal, if West, the dealer is playing weak 2’s he will open 2 Hearts, with his 9 high card points – the deal is almost worth a 1 Heart opening bid because of the singleton Club J, and some may do that. North, with his 16 points will double the 2 Hearts for his partner to bid. With only 8 points most Easts will pass, leaving South to bid his Spades at the 2 level. Now, what can North do?

If East has passed, then South is forced to bid, regardless of how few points he has, and furthermore, may only have 4 Spades. However, should East choose to raise West’s weak 2 opening to 3 Hearts, South now has the opportunity to show his Spades with a free bid at the 3 level, and his partnership may get to game contract – 10 tricks, which makes very nicely. In fact, if West on lead, chooses his Club J North/South will make 11 tricks, because one of South’s losing Hearts can be pitched on North’s 5th Club.

Much easier to find 4 Spades if West does not open a weak 2 Hearts, leaving North to open the bidding and the auction proceeds differently. A bonus for the North/South partnership is their nice fit in a second suit, Clubs.

Ashburton Golf Club Peter Walker put down a good marker ahead of the club champs knockout rounds. He shot a very impressive 69 for 45 points on Saturday, picking up Radius Care player of the day and 12 RMF Cup points, to move to the top of the table.

Young Wilson Hii held his nerve to post a solid 37 points and pick up the Brandon Cup with a very good 3 round aggregate score of 119 points, well done young fella.

This Saturday sees the first round of the club champs, and a big day looks in store down at the Brandon. The first round of Seniors has a distinct look of Tigers against Bunnies, and a couple of savagings could take place. If you’re not sure which one you are, then you a probably the bunny. It would be a majorly, massive upset if any of the bunnies can manage to topple one of the mighty tigers, it would be akin to Jordan Speith getting beat by Stevie Wonder in a golf and colouring in contest. Let the match play mind games begin. The intermediate grade has some great games in store.

Jordy Bird against Sean Strange jumps out straight away. Two good mates slugging it out, Sean got the jump on Jordy last week, but I think it might be reversed this time round. Two ex-champs meet with Neil Macdonald and Grant Smith locking horns, and big hitting Jason Overend against ever steady Chris Lovelock looks an intriguing match. In

the Junior A Braydon Wood has been practising with ear plugs in for his match up with Perry Hunt and Matt Tait will need to bring all his skills to overcome the match play king Bill Hetrick. Junior B’s all have byes this week so good luck to everyone taking part. Go the bunnies!

On Sunday we have the annual Foodstuff trophy against Tinwald at home. 12 noon meet for 12:30 tee off. Bring your A game because we could do with that trophy back in the cabinet.

The mens weekend pennants came to a grinding halt last Sunday, with our Holmes team getting pipped in the semi-final by Tinwald, hard luck boys.

The Paterson team continued their late season revival, talk about “after the horse has bolted”. For the second week in a row they toppled the league leaders with a strong 11 ½ to 5 ½ win over Fairlie to finish the season 7th and miss out on the play offs, yet again. Big well done to Greig Sparrow who picked up his first win of the season. He tried every trick in the book to get a win, bent every rule as far as possible. Though I still think kicking your opponent’s guide dog is a bit much, but a win is a win. Till next week, good golfing.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club We played our Club Singles recently and this was won by Karen Stephen and Karen Bensdorp was runner up. Plate winner was Jan Guilford and runner up Betty King. Bowl winner was Marion Harrison and runner up was Rewa Kyle. The mens club singles were played the same day and this was won by Neville Bensdorp and Jonathan Crum was runner up.

received 20 entries which was very pleasing. Six of our players took part in this, and the event was won by Stephane Montel and Nicolas Xavier from Christchurch. However an Ashburton team Karen and Neville Bensdorp won the Championship consolation.

The Canterbury singles was played the next day with 26 taking part, and Stephane Montel once again showed his ability by winning this as well. Richard Browne finished 3= in this section. Karen Bensdorp won the Plate consolation and was top Lady. Mick Little came second in the Bowl and Rewa Kyle 3rd=. Jonathan Crum finished 3rd= in the Bowl consolation.

We had 5 players take part in the Mark Choveaux tournament in Caversham last week and Richard Browne and Karen and Neville Bensdorp were runners up in this event. Jan Guilford and Marion Harrison along with Ron Paterson from Papanui finished in the top 8. A good effort all round.

The next few weeks are going to be busy for our competitive players which they will enjoy. The majority of our players are social ones and will continue to enjoy playing on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Shortly we will start playing one evening during the week when daylight allows.

Ashburton Pakeke Lions Club President Ron Paterson welcomed Members and partners, visitors and guest speaker Greg Roadley to the August meeting. The table quiz had members exercising their brains on world geography such as naming longest rivers, roads, highest mountains, largest land mass, etc. No help from Google allowed!

Information for members included requests for helpers on Daffodil Day and for the Arthritis Appeal. Ist VP Lion Noel reminded members of the club’s participation on Boulevard Day and items required. The 2019 Charity Sale will be held on March 2. Orders were taken for the Lion’s Christmas cakes.

Guest Speaker for the evening, Greg Roadley, gave us an enthralling account of his recent adventure in the Arctic Circle. He had participated in The Arctic 6633 Ultra marathon, known as the toughest, coldest and longest event in the world requiring much preparation and conditioning in order to overcome extreme challenges. These included temperatures, wind chill, sleep deprivation, weight loss, blisters, shin splints, nerve damage, fatigue, isolation, and 12 hours of darkness. Despite all this Greg was one of six out of the starting line of thirty who completed the course the only Kiwi to have achieved this.

Over the 9 years the race has been held only 26 have ever actually finished. An amazing feat but definitely not for the faint hearted.

An important event for Pakeke Lions on October 19 will be the Dementia Awareness Breakfast, a major project for Pakeke who will be hosting Greg Kelly, an inspirational Australian diagnosed with Youth Onset Dementia at age of 59 years. Currently he is travelling through New Zealand on a Harley Davidson raising public awareness and will be the feature speaker at the Breakfast. Hamish Riach will introduce the speaker and will also speak briefly on the importance of injury management, particularly head knock injuries in contact sport. Dementia in all its forms has become a rapidly growing problem and there is significant interest in this function. CEO of Dementia Canterbury will also speak. Proceeds from the breakfast will go to Dementia Services in Mid Canterbury. More details will be advertised. The next ladies craft morning will be held at Ina Diver’s home, 60 Kelvin Crescent on September 10 at 10am. The meeting closed with singing of the National Anthem.

Run and Walk Ashburton Our members have had a busy week, something for everyone – walking, running, morning and evening sessions taking place throughout the week.

Our Tuesday night runners have two groups currently meeting at the Domain.

One group is doing five weeks of 6 x 1km reps at V02 max pace, and the other group is doing a 400m speed work session. Two new runners joined

Ashburton Run and Walk members have been busy in recent times. us last Tuesday. The Wednesday night walkers had 12 members gather outside the Croquet Club in Philip Street, all enjoying a good strong walk around their town circuit. They commented that the evenings are getting noticeably lighter.

Saturday morning Early Birds again had a few new faces join the group. In all eight people took in both the town and south side river track, both walking and running, with members choosing their distance of choice, with one running to Lake Hood and back. Everyone gathered at Columbus afterwards and enjoyed a hot drink. The morning was slightly cool but perfect conditions for their early start.

A group of nine walkers enjoyed being hosted by past member Cecilia Whiting in Christchurch on Saturday afternoon. The afternoon was sunny with a cool easterly.

All enjoyed a 90min walk of 8.3km taking in a labyrinth of streets, and admiring the beautiful gardens, around the Claverly Gardens, Avonside area. All enjoyed afternoon tea and a good chat before heading home at 4pm.

South Island where our members gained a total of seven placings in the New Zealand teams. The panic to get Club championship targets completed, targets to be shot for the Target Shooting New Zealand Inter association and Interclub postal matches and last, but not least, our defence as holders of the Titipounamu trophy. Monday night saw the final of the season for Coronation where the Maw Trophy for drawn pairs was settled.

This year’s winners were Steve McArthur and Shakayla Hutchins with a record 213.8. Shikayla recorded a personal best.

Second placed Jack MacIntosh and Keith Bonnington also broke the old record with 209.4. Jacob Kilworth shot a personal best teamed with Lanelle McArthur to equal the old record in third place.

Altogether 13 pairs took part in this most enjoyable competition. Suddenly it’s all over.

In what can only be described as a stellar season for our two clubs we must recognize the huge amount of work that takes place behind the scenes.

Nina McKenzie as President of T.S.M.C. and also as captain of Coronation has worked tirelessly as have the respective committees, sometimes to the detriment of their own performances. The results speak highly of the work done by the coaching team. The number of members who have stepped up and taken on coaching roles is impressive, thank you team.

Not being a group to rest on their laurels plans are already afoot for the hosting of the Andrews and Faulkner match in 2020, the coaching team are working on coaching/training camps during the off season and no doubt the inevitable “working bees” to clean and maintain equipment and range. As this will be the last club news for the year I will take the opportunity to thank the Ashburton Guardian for their continued support. I am reliably informed that many newspapers throughout the country will not publish results or invite contributions. We are indeed fortunate to have such support and co-operation.

In brief Green ‘not considered’ It’s a measure of the Warriors’ progress this year that Blake Green won’t be risked on Friday night against Canberra. Green wasn’t considered for selection, not quite recovered from a calf injury sustained in the narrow loss to the Bulldogs on August 19. Complacency not an issue

They haven’t lost a game all season, but Celtic A are taking nothing for granted heading into tonight’s Mid Canterbury Netball ACL premier one final against Methven A. Celtic A coach Ange Leadley said anything could happen when it came to finals netball and her players were not taking the challenge from Methven A lightly.

“We’ve discussed all their strengths and weaknesses, so we know where we have to focus our energy,” Leadley said.

“They have got some good strong leaders in their team which I think will serve them well.”

But, Celtic A were the defending champions and boasted a

lot of experience too, and they’d proven to be a slick, fast side on court this season, with only a couple of teams having even come close to threatening their unbeaten record.

Leadley said that meant little tonight though.

“We have had the dream run and there’s a bit of pressure on us going into the final unbeaten,” Leadley said.

“We have talked about that and with finals day everyone brings everything they have got, so we have to draw on our experience and our skill.

“But the big thing is we know we have got to play as a team.”

The Celtic A team that took to the court tonight would possibly feature one change from the starting line-up that took to the

court in Celtic’s 20-goal win over Mt Somers in last week’s semifinals.

Wing defence Sarah Hewson had been unwell this week and had a big question mark by her name yesterday, but the side’s centre, Julia McLeod, had trained this week after leaving the court with an ankle injury against Mt Somers.

Leadley said Celtic’s strength was in their depth.

They had called on players from their club’s B side to fill holes in recent weeks and they’d proven to be more than up to the task.

It had been a big season for the Celtic club, with their B side having earned themselves a spot in premier one for the season’s third and final round, courtesy of a win

over United A in the promotion/ relegation game between the top premier two side and the bottom premier one side at the end of round two.

It was the first time Celtic had had two teams playing in the top grade at the same time, and Celtic B went on to finish fifth equal after drawing with Hampstead A last week.

The week before that they’d picked up their first win in premier one, handing Methven A a surprise defeat in the final game of round three.

Despite the loss, Methven A still finished second equal with Ashburton College A heading into the finals and just squeaked through to the final with a dramatic one-goal win only sealed in the final seconds last week.

South Sydney coach Anthony Seibold admits his side have been thrown off balance by their recent backline injury crisis. But with prolific try-scoring winger Robert Jennings fit for tonight’s NRL final-round clash with the Wests Tigers, the Rabbitohs are back to full strength. Souths have lost three straight, however, will have all of their top 13 available when Jennings returns from a hamstring injury.

‘We need that perfect game’

Methven A may be underdogs heading into tonight’s Mid Canterbury Netball ACL premier one final, but they shouldn’t be written off.

Coach Maree Firth said her side had nothing to lose, so they’d be throwing everything they had at Celtic A tonight in a bid to become the first team this season to topple them.

She believed Celtic A could be beaten.

“Any team can beat any team; the All Blacks have been beaten.

“But we have to actually front up and put pressure on them through the court,” Firth said.

“We believe they are beatable – any team is beatable – we just need to concentrate on our game.”

Methven A’s three games against Celtic A this season had

resulted in losses by 10 goals in round three, and 17 goals in both rounds one and two. But, particularly in the round three game, Firth said her side had pretty much been beaten before they even took to the court.

“It’s the top two per cent that’s going to win this game, and team work all the way,” Firth said.

Firth said there was no question, Methven A were going in as the underdogs, but that didn’t bother them.

“Celtic are such a good team that we have to bring our total A game and play that perfect game,” she said.

Against Ashburton College A in the semi-finals, Firth said Methven A put up something like 12 extra shots than their opponents, but only won by one.

Leanne Clemens landed the winning goal with just seconds

on the clock, putting Methven A in front for the first time in the whole game.

“We need to play that perfect game.

“We can’t give Celtic that many opportunities because they will take them and punish us,” Firth said. “I’ve got all confidence in the girls.

“They know what they need to do and it would be fantastic if they could pull it off.”

It would be the upset of the season by a long shot if they did pull it off.

Firth said on paper, Celtic should romp home. But her side would be doing everything in their power to stop them.

“We have got nothing to lose, they are going to have to beat us,” Firth said.

Firth just hoped that, whatever happened, she’d make it in

time to see it. She has been away for a couple of days and was due to fly back into Christchurch in time to make it back for the final – had it been 7.30pm as she’d expected.

But, tonight’s final was at 7pm with the prizegiving to follow at 8pm meaning that Firth would miss her team’s warm-up and hopefully arrive just in time for the start of the game.

Ashburton College A and Mt Somers will kick off tonight’s finals night action, playing off for third spot at 6pm.

Meanwhile, tonight’s premier two competition final will see United A and Southern A battle it out for supremacy in the second tier, with that game being played at 6pm, along with the premier two third placed play-off between Ashburton College B and Celtic C.

Lazarus eyes clean sweep Lazarus has a rare chance to complete a historic full set of major race wins after securing a perfect draw for Sunday’s $615,000 Canadian Pacing Derby.

The champion Kiwi pacer has drawn barrier two in his second North American start, which is scheduled for 1.50pm (NZ time) on Sunday and after his bullying win in the Dan Patch in Indiana two weeks ago he has opened a $1.45 favourite with the NZ TAB. The Dan Patch was Lazarus’ first start for his new United States owners after being sold for $4 million in the hopes he can win some of North America’s biggest races and become a dualhemisphere stallion prospect.

The Dan Patch victory, in which Lazarus overcame barrier nine to lead for most of the race, saw the hype around the six-year-old go sky high and with Sunday’s field not much stronger, Lazarus will only need to maintain that performance level to probably win again.

Although trotting races are held in many parts of the world, the pacing gait is the focal point of the harness racing industry in

Trackside TV will be focusing on Lazarus on Sunday. only four countries – New Zealand, Australia, United States and Canada. If Lazarus wins in Canada on Sunday, he will have won a group one race or equivalent level race in all four of those countries inside 10 months.

Thefixer downed Dream About Me in the first open class race of the season last Thursday but that was under handicap conditions with Dream About Me off 30m.

On Friday, they meet under free-for-all conditions and with Dream About Me expected to derive enormous benefit from last Thursday she could well head the market.

Both Thefixer and Dream About Me have been touted as possible Victoria Cup raiders in mid-October as that Melton classic is unlikely to have the depth of previous years and could be a lucrative target for the stablemates before they return to Addington for the New Zealand Cup in November.

Te Akau trio to kick off southern mission Trainer Jamie Richards will lineup three horses at Ashburton today, kicking off Te Akau’s annual southern migration.

“We have a team of four down there at the moment and we’ll send another four or five down at the end of the week,” Richards said.

The Matamata-based stable have been making the trip south well in advance of the New Zealand Cup Week for a number of years and have enjoyed great success.

“It’s been the tried and true method for us,” he said.

“Mark Walker had a stable at Rangiora and since then we’ve

utilised Riccarton as a base for many of our horses at this time of year.

“The weather improves a bit quicker down there than it does in the Waikato and you get to not only race them on better tracks, but also train them on better tracks.

“So, we find they come to hand a little bit quicker down there.”

Stakes-placed mare Swing Note will begin her four-yearold campaign in the Barneswood Farm Stakes Day 20th October (1400m), following a recent trial win at Te Rapa and placing at Te Teko.

“She’s strengthened up from

Trainer Jamie Richards three to four and we were a bit unlucky with her at the end of last year, so she’s going the right way and it’s a nice race to kick her off in,” Richards said.

“We’re going to try and work towards the open 2000m Spring Classic (on October 27) at Riccarton with her, which Grazia won last year.”

The other two Te Akau runners today are four-year-old geldings Summer Monsoon (Matt Smith Construction R65 1250m) and Bak Da Master (Placemakers Ashburton Maiden 1600m).

“I expect all three to run well, but certainly Swing Note and Summer Monsoon should go well,” Richards said.

“Bak Da Master is first up at a mile after a couple of trials, so he might just appreciate this run.”

Lanciato camp confident Trainer Mark Newnham has plenty of confidence in Lanciato heading into the Gr.2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Liquid Inspiration wins The Wayne Hillis-trained Liquid Inspiration took full advantage of the wet conditions at Matamata yesterday to win the ADM Feeds Ltd 1200 on the heavy11 track. The Iffraaj mare jumped away well and was pushed forward to take the early lead under apprentice jockey Darren Danis. The pair did not relinquish their advantage, with Liquid Inspiration scoring by two and a half-lengths over Saint Croix with Icing on the Cake a further two lengths back in third. “I thought that with the rain she was going to be the one that liked it the most,” Hillis said.

Spelling paddock calls Last-start Grand National Hurdles winner Jack Frost will have his final hit-out of the season in the Massey Fergusson and Fendt at JJ 2100m at Ashburton today before heading to the spelling paddock. Chautauqua in demand The door remains ajar for Chautauqua to figure in the early part of the Victorian spring carnival. Moonee Valley Racing Club chief executive Michael Browell sees Chautauqua as a major drawcard and would love to see him run in the Group One Moir Stakes on September 28 and the Group One Manikato Stakes on Cox Plate eve. Chautauqua needs to trial twice before being allowed to start again.

Hennessy hopes history repeats Matamata trainer Gary Hennessy (right) sees a number of similarities in Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) hopeful Ocean Emperor and his five-time Group One winning galloper Ocean Park.

It is six years since Hennessy prepared Ocean Park to win the Hastings Group One, then known as the Makfi Challenge Stakes,

which was a pre-cursor to the entire winning three Group One races in Melbourne during the spring of 2012, including the Cox Plate (2040m).

A seven-year-old entire by Zabeel, Ocean Emperor missed much of his three and four-yearold seasons with a hoof injury, but the dual Group Two winner is

making up for lost time.

Ocean Emperor prepared for Saturday’s contest, for which he is rated a $12 chance, with two impressive trial victories at Te Teko and then Taupo, leaving a host of weight-for-age gallopers in his wake.

“He’s right where we want him to be,” Hennessy said.

“He’s like where we were with Ocean Park when he won his trial by three-lengths going in to this race.

“This horse did it a lot easier and against a lot stronger opposition.”

Heart of the Highlands

Shrek the ogre lives alone in his swamp, fairy tale freaks arrive to claim it back. Shrek meets a new friend Donkey and they must find Lord Farquaad a princess to marry so he can become King, they find Fiona who has a curse on her which can only be broken by a “true love kiss”. A dream start didn’t result in a dream ending for the Ashburton College senior boys’ basketball side on Tuesday night.

The college’s A boys took on Papanui High School in the Canterbury secondary schools’ Thomson Trophy division two final in Christchurch on Tuesday night and came away with an 89-80 loss.

They started aggressively and caught Papanui off guard, racing

out to a 14-2 lead, which they extended to 24-12 by the first quarter’s end, and led 42-30 at half time.

But the crucial third quarter had proven problematic for Ashburton this season and although they came out strong to extend their lead to 50-34, that was when things began to change.

Their defensive structure broke down and Papanui were able to break the press and score easily, as Ashburton’s offence also started to misfire.

Ashburton still led 59-55 at three quarter time, but Papanui were on a roll and drove at will at a tiring Ashburton side to come from behind and win.

Ashburton coach Brian Kerr said his side was up for the challenge and deserved their top two finish.

“The team had utilised a basic structure for the whole season which had worked well,” Kerr said.

But their intensity faded and their offence struggled at times in

Tuesday night’s encounter.

Kerr said all the boys that got on court played their hearts out.

Marc Juntilla top scored with 17, Quinn Ritchie again worked hard for his 11, and although Fotu Hala got into early foul trouble which didn’t help his flow, he still managed 13 points and a number of blocked shots before fouling out late in the game.

Ben Jackson also worked hard on the boards, finishing with 13 points.

“The result is disappointing because we didn’t get it right on the day. Nearly, but not quite,” Kerr said.

“However, to make the finals was an excellent result for a group of hard working players.

“They will hurt with this, but we move on.”

The college side will be back in action next week in Ashburton, when the EA Networks Centre hosts a South Island basketball tournament.
