Skifield manager rejects Niwa forecast

Mt Hutt Ski Area management are confident of a good ski season despite Niwa forecasting a warm start to winter.

As the ski area prepares to open in about six weeks’ time, it remains in its snowless summer state and Mid Canterbury is experiencing balmy conditions.

Manager James McKenzie said that Niwa’s seasonal outlook, released yesterday, was not setting off any alarm bells at Mt Hutt, and he was confident it would have enough snow to open on June 10.

“Last time we had a warm Niwa forecast at Mt Hutt we had a threemetre storm,” Mr McKenzie said.

“There’s the larger-scale forecasting, then there’s the macro micro climate idiosyncracies, it just takes one southerly storm to come up,” he said.

He said there were a number of indicators for winter conditions contrary to those suggested by Niwa.

These included a phenomenal snow year on the Northern American coast, which Mt Hutt often tracked behind. And then there were anecdotal reports from Methven residents which foretold of a good snow year.

These included one woman’s tomato crop having experienced a bumper March, and nut trees prolifically producing nuts. Apparently some locals swore by these indicators, Mr McKenzie said.

And despite the mild weather

Mr McKenzie said a long-term forecast for the mountain from the MetService had predicted warmer than average temperatures for the next fortnight, but then temperatures moving into the average range.

MetService meteorologist Ciaran Doolin said the warm weather for April in Mid Canterbury had been caused by a number of high pressure systems over the country.

No significant precipitation was in the short-term forecast for the area, however, the warm conditions did not suggest there would be a late start to winter.

“That doesn’t meant we are less likely to have frontal weather systems moving through.”

Speaker’s story inspires teachers Mid Canterbury teachers were inspired by the personal story of Australian humanitarian Khoa Do (pictured) yesterday.

Mr Do was a guest speaker at the final day of a two-day conference, hosted by the Mid Canterbury Principals’ Association, at

the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.

Mr Do arrived in Sydney as a Vietnamese refugee with his family in 1980. He went on to study law and arts, and was named 2005 Young Australian of the Year.

He is today a film director and professional speaker, and a philanthropist, having become well known for his work in helping the under-privileged in south western Sydney, particularly the Vietnamese community.

Tully’s sentencing date set Convicted double murderer Russell John Tully will return to the High Court in Christchurch for sentencing on May 27.

Tully has been held in custody since his arrest following the shooting deaths of Ashburton Work and Income receptionist Peggy Turuhira Noble and caseworker Susan Leigh Cleveland at their Cass Street office on September 1, 2014.

He was arrested later the same day following an extensive manhunt centred on the Ashburton riverbed.

After a series of aborted trial dates Tully was convicted of the double murder, the attempted murder of a staff member he fired at but missed and the unlawful possession of two shotguns at the conclusion of a High Court jury trial at Christchurch

earlier this year. Tully was found not guilty of attempting to murder another caseworker, who was shot in the leg with a sawnoff pump-action shotgun during the rampage or a further charge of setting a mantrap, in the form of a length of steel wire stretched between two trees.

During the lead up to the trial Tully, now 50, sacked several lawyers and refused to co-operate

with court-appointed amici curiae Phil Shamy and James Rapley.

During the trial Tully, shackled in a wheelchair, was twice removed from the courtroom for his outbursts in which he claimed to be unfit to stand trial and to have been denied adequate legal representation.

Despite being absent for much of the 11-day trial, he was present for the final three days

and stood quietly against a wall flanked by prison guards, as Justice Cameron Mander delivered the verdicts.

Andrew McRae and Mark Zarifeh represented the Crown, which called evidence from 73 witnesses during the trial.

Tully was returned to custody to await sentencing on April 15, however the date was cancelled without explanation.

Newly appointed student mentor Keri Kuru is ready to hit the ground running when she starts her new job on the Salvation Army Education and Employment programme next week.

Ms Kuru brings both passion and experience to the newlycreated position, and is looking forward to working alongside the programme’s principal tutor Heather Daly.

For the past six years Ms Kuru has worked as a mentor on the Ashburton New Life Church’s Shine programme, which focuses on building confidence and self-esteem for girls and women.

“Young people need role models who believe in them and encourage them, and that’s something I’m passionate about – so here I am,” she said.

The student mentor position is funded for 7.5 hours a week and involves working alongside up to 15 students enrolled in NCEA subjects at levels one and two.

Some of the time Ms Kuru will work alongside Ms Daly providing one-to-one support.

While her job will be centred on assisting graduates to find work as their course of study ends, it will encompass all aspects of pastoral care, from problems at home to addressing risky behaviour.

Two 40-week courses are on offer in Ashburton, aimed at finding work in computing or in the service sector.

Some students are referred by Ashburton College counsellors; others walk in off the street and can enrol anytime throughout 2016 or 2017.

Passionate youth mentor Keri Kuru will start work for the Salvation Army on Tuesday.

Ashburton rest home managers are welcoming new research on norovirus which gives hope that there may one day be a vaccine for the gastrointestinal illness.

The research by Australian and New Zealand scientists has found that most of the norovirus cases during an outbreak in the two countries between 2013 and 2014 could be traced back to a single virus strain which emerged in Sydney in 2012.

New Zealand’s Science Media Centre reported this week that the researchers’ findings shed light on the virus’s evolution, and could potentially aid development of a much-needed vaccine.

Among rest homes affected by the 2013-2014 outbreak was Ashburton’s 100-bed Rosebank Residential Care.

Manager Sue Prowse said about half of the residents had gone down with the illness at the time, in what was the rest home’s latest outbreak.

“And when it does happen it can be extremely debilitating to people and make them very unwell, and it can be fatal,” Ms Prowse said.

It was for this reason that any preventative measures such as a vaccine would be most welcome.

Owner of 35-bed Princes Court Dementia Care, Vicki Green, agreed norovirus was a “nasty”

bug and something no rest home ever wanted to have. Preventative measures went some way to keeping the bug at bay, and the home had not had an outbreak for about four years.

Further research on the virus and developments towards a vaccine would be welcome, but when it came to immunisation, permission would have to be sought on an individual basis from families.

The new Terrace View Retirement Village at Tinwald has to date not had an outbreak. Regional manager Jon Amesbury said as well as a wide range of precautions to ensure an outbreak did not occur, the rest home had robust infection control measures aimed at isolating the bug.

A vaccine would be welcomed.

Cameron Courts facility manager clinical manager Vinea Fuimaono would welcome a vaccine. She believed norovirus was more so an issue in hospitals and hospital-care facilities, rather than in rest homes, and there had not been an outbreak at the 31-bed facility in recent years.

“But it’s very unpredictable,” she said.

The Canterbury District Health Board said there had not been an outbreak recently at Ashburton Hospital.

Medical officer of health Dr Ramon Pink said norovirus was not a notifiable disease, but outbreaks in hospitals and rest homes were “fairly common”.

Control measures in such facilities included isolating patients and stopping visitors to break the transmission cycle.

Police are examining a Christchurch address which may be connected to the death of a man who was found brutally assaulted and burnt near a popular lake in rural Canterbury on Monday. The body of Marcus Luke Tucker, 36, of Christchurch, was found dumped near Lake Ellesmere, on Drain Road, Doyleston. Detective Inspector Tom Fitzgerald said police were continuing their investigation into the death, which included a scene examination of an Addington address which they believe may be connected . Police yesterday confirmed Mr Tucker was brutally assaulted before his death and his body burnt. Mr Tucker’s body was found by a group of Filipino fishermen.

Motorcyclist killed A motorcyclist died in a road crash in Christchurch yesterday.

The accident involved a Mercedes car and a motorcycle at the intersection of Pound Road and Ryans Road just before 1pm. The motorcyclist died as a result of injuries. The driver of a commercial truck that passed through the intersection a short time before the crash was being urged to call police, as well as anyone who witnessed the incident.

Plan upsets Insurance Council

Mr Swain said the national amalgamation was a huge and complex job, but the board was ready for the challenge. “We fully endorse the choice of name for the organisation – Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) – because firefighters nowadays respond to a huge variety of emergencies, including motor vehicle crashes, medical emergencies, natural disasters as well as fires.”

Mr Swain said the funding would provide much-needed extra support for volunteers, who were a vital part of firefighting forces across the country, including in remote

and emergency response organisation.

As part of the change, Ashburton could potentially be the first in New Zealand to undergo a physical transformation as part of the amalgamation, with planning under way for an extension to the existing Ashburton Fire Station, to make room for the Ashburton Rural volunteer fire force to move in.

The extension is still in the planning stage and its cost remains unknown, but it will include new locker space and facilities, to accommodate the extra firefighters and their gear. The Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade currently has 35

The amalgamation of New Zealand rural and urban fire forces took another step forward yesterday with a funding announcement which will allow transition planning to begin.

Paul Swain, chair of the New Zealand Fire Service Board, said the Government funding – $303 million over five years – provided the clear direction the board needed to begin moving the country’s 38 rural fire authorities, the National Rural Fire Authority and the New Zealand Fire Service into a single unified organisation.

It will be the country’s new fire

and rural areas. The new organisation would also create more career path options for career firefighters including vegetation fire management, enforcement and support, and the development of more rescue, medical and hazmat specialists.

“There is broad support for changes to our fire and emergency organisations, and we will be talking to all our people, as well as the community and other stakeholders, to make sure the transition takes place as smoothly as possible.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is expected to formally come into existence on 1 July next year.

The $303 million overhaul of New Zealand’s fire services hasn’t proven a winner with the Insurance Council of New Zealand (ICNZ).

The fire levy (paid on insurance for contents, property and motor vehicles) is set to become the main source of funding for the new organisation.

From July 2018, the fire levy will be broadened to include insurance on material damage, not just fire damage, to better reflect the range of services the new Fire and Emergency New Zealand will provide.

The fire levy on motor vehicle insurance will be extended to include third party insurance.

And to the ICNZ, continuing to tax only those who paid insurance to fund the fire service was blatantly unfair.

“This is not good for hard working Kiwis who do the right thing by taking out insurance to protect their property,” chief executive Tim Grafton said.

“We’re naturally disappointed the Government only wants to tax people who take out insurance and allow those who don’t insure to be free-loaders.”

PSA national secretary Glenn Barclay is happy though, with Internal Affairs minister Peter Dunne promising no jobs would go through the merger.

He now just wants transparency through the process.

“The minister has taken time to consult widely during the course of this review and he’s clearly taken into account the feedback from firefighters,” Mr Barclay said.

“Now we want him to keep those lines of communication open and listen to our members too.”

Hospital meals more than okay here

When meals roll out of the Ashburton Hospital kitchen, compliments roll in.

While protestors have taken to the streets over the quality of meals served up in Dunedin and Invercargill hospitals, patients and Meals on Wheels clients in Ashburton have no such concerns, Ashburton Hospital’s health services manager Bernice Marra said.

Dunedin Hospital managers have been taken to task over the decision to abandon in-house meal preparation for a cheaper option provided by Compass Group in February as a cost cutting measure to help the cash-strapped Southern DHB balance its books.

The meals are prepared and frozen in the North Island and shipped south for reheating at Dunedin and Invercargill hospitals and the Meals on Wheels service.

Patients at the affected hospitals have posted photos online of meals they described as “disgusting” and “uneatable”.

A group is calling for the Southern District Health Board to end Compass Group’s contract to provide hospital meals in the far south.

Two national titles go on the line at Ashburton Speedway this weekend.

The speedway track is hosting its annual New Zealand Title weekend as part of Wheels Week Plus, and drivers and their cars have come from around the South Island – and as far away as Gisborne – for the event.

Yesterday was practise day, and it didn’t go well for all – a sixshooter went into the wall and did itself a good couple of thousand dollars worth of damage, Ashburton Speedway president Lance Maher said.

They’re hoping that’s the last of the drama though, and a weekend of top racing lies ahead.

“Everyone is loving the track.

It’s very fast, it’s going to be a good couple of days.”

There will be 40 mini-stocks racing for national supremacy, and 35 in the production class.

Other classes will also race, and scattered among the entrants are some promising female drivers, and more than one generation of some families.

Gazza farewelled

Whetu Taewa from Cromwell will be among those competing at Ashburton Speedway this weekend, where two national titles are up for grabs.

It’s a big weekend for Ashburton Speedway, and Mr Maher said they’d normally get around

1000 people through the gates over the two days.

With fine weather forecast for the weekend, they’re hoping the hordes will once again come along.

Wheels Week kicks off with speedway action The first events of what is expected to be the biggest and best Wheels Week yet, will get under way today.

Originally held over a week, the event has grown as the years have gone on and more time was needed to fit all of the action in, so it’s now held over more than two weeks.

Opening weekend used to feature the Ashburton Vintage Car Club’s swap meet as the first event, but that’s moved back a week this year, meaning the first events of 2016 will feature wheels of the racing kind.

Today, the New Zealand Speedway title weekend will get under way at Ashburton Speedway, while the Ashburton Car Club is hosting its annual quarter mile sprints at Willowby.

There’s then a break for a couple of days before a few locals give mobility scooter racing a go

in the Ashburton RSA car park on Wednesday, and that night, the Ashburton Car Club’s annual Suzie Morrison Memorial Night Car Trial will be held.

The first in a series of static displays on the East Street green will also set up shop on Wednesday thanks to the Ashburton Aviation Museum, followed by another on Thursday.

Weekend two will feature everything from models, to mountain bikes, trains and custom cars, while the third and final weekend includes one of the event’s biggest features – the Ashburton Car Club’s annual street sprints.

The final day – Sunday, May 15 – will also feature the popular Wheels Week Street Parade, which kicks off at 10.30am.

Police have shared a touching photo of slain 4-year-old police dog Gazza wrapped in a New Zealand flag as he was farewelled for the last time yesterday. Gazza was shot in an armed siege in Porirua last Friday morning by Pita Tekira, who was on the run after ditching his electronic monitoring bracelet. “Today we said farewell to our friend and colleague, Wellington Police Dog Gazza,” police wrote in tribute to the German shepherd. “His job was to obey, serve and protect.

This he bravely did.” A plaque bearing Gazza’s name and his service details would be placed on a memorial wall at the Police Dog Training Centre in Trentham, alongside other police dogs who have been killed on duty. - NZME

Jogger attacked A young jogger was abducted early yesterday morning, sexually assaulted then dumped by her attacker badly injured in central Whangarei. The attack sparked a police manhunt that culminated in the arrest of a 40-year-old man after officers spotted a vehicle of interest they had been searching for. The woman is in hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Tua married Former heavyweight boxer David Tua has a beautiful new woman in his life – and is not afraid to tell the world how he feels. The 43-year-old was pictured in Samoa alongside new wife Helen Tua. The couple are in the island nation where he is due to speak about his struggles with depression and suicide at a community concert in the capital city, Apia. ‘We need to be social media savvy’

When you go to a cocktail party you don’t constantly talk about yourself all night, so don’t do that on social media.

So says Christchurch brand strategist Mark Godenho, who this week spoke to Mid Canterbury business owners and managers at a Business Mid Canterbury master class.

About 25 attended the class, on the fundamentals of marketing in a digital world.

Mr Godenho said that businesses should be active on social media, but it was only a minority which were doing it well.

Social media trends for 2016 included “mobile is king”.

Eighty-one per cent of New Zealanders accessed Facebook on their cellphones.

“Your website needs to be optimised for mobile,” Mr Godenho said.

Additionally, new research had shown that video content was more engaging than any other medium. After video, came photography, then text, then links.

Today videos immediately began to play in users’ newsfeeds, and because this was often without sound, videos needed to have subtitles.

“So people take it in while scrolling through,” he said.

“Video is where it’s at, so you need to be using video if you can,” Mr Godenho said.

And businesses should not make their social media all about themselves. Social media was like a cocktail party, and if you just talked about yourself, you would be left friendless for the night. And content shared by businesses did not all have to be produced by them. The best framework for content was 60 per cent curated material from other sources, 30 per cent your own, and 10 per cent promotional content.

Aussies worst offenders on NZ roads

By Regan Schoultz Australians are some of the worst offenders on New Zealand roads when it comes fatal and injury crashes among foreign drivers.

A new report titled Overseas Drivers in Crashes revealed the large majority of overseas visitors involved in crashes were from across the ditch.

The top six countries with the highest numbers of drivers involved in crashes between 20102014 were Australia, Germany, UK, China, India and the USA. Combined, these six countries contributed over half (55 per cent) of the overseas drivers in crashes.

In 2014 overseas drivers (those

with an overseas driver’s licence) were involved in 16 fatal traffic crashes, 100 serious injury crashes and 436 minor injury crashes.

Of these crashes, the overseas driver was at fault in 15 of the fatal crashes, 78 of the serious injury crashes and 332 of the minor injury crashes, resulting in 22 deaths, 118 serious injuries and 551 minor injuries.

The determination of fault for a crash is based on crash movements and crash cause factors assigned in the Crash Analysis System.

Associate Transport Minister Craig Foss said the figures did not come as a surprise.

“It is actually many people from left-hand drive countries having

accidents so it is not [so much] those that come from right-hand drive countries. I can understand why some people probably made that conclusion but now we can show it is just not the case.”

Mr Foss said excessive speed and under-doing or over-doing a corner had been key factors in many crashes involving Australians.

“A common cause of injury in Australia is just driving too fast for the conditions,” he said.

“Now of course the total amount of Australian visitors was actually much higher than the others, but the others are really quite significant visitors as well so that also influences the numbers.”

What was surprising was the

causes of crashes which were by and large the same causes behind why New Zealanders crashed, he said.

“I was wondering if fatigue was an issue as well because at first glance ... people immediately go to fatigue and driving on the other side of the road and this busts both of those myths.

“Drivers from overseas are [mostly] having accidents for the same reasons as New Zealanders which are speed, distraction, intersections.”

The report showed the two biggest crash types for overseas licence-holders were intersection collisions and single vehicle “loss of control or run off road” crashes.

These are followed by “rear end or collision with obstruction crashes” and head-on crashes.

“The sad and brutal fact of all things on the road is New Zealanders are dying on our roads almost one a day, at the same time there may be a visiting driver’s accident or near miss somewhere and that puts it into stark reality and contrast that as a country we so have to lift our game for driving on the road.”

He said the fact that the percentage of crashes by tourist drivers had remained relatively stable over the years, despite the numbers of tourists increasing by 30 per cent, showed “things are working”.

id Canterbury’s beautiful beech forests are more silent than eco-tourism operator Warren Jowett would care to imagine.

He is a bird lover and conservationist from way back and for about 15 years operated a successful eco-tourism business at Staveley.

From Invercargill originally, now Mr Jowett is on his way to Dunedin with wife Marita, where the couple, who have four grandchildren, will be close to family in the city.

But he has concerns about what he is leaving behind.

As magnificent as the forest is which graces Mid Canterbury’s foothills, it has an inherent ugliness at its heart, and that is predators invading it from within and destroying its birdlife.

He and Marita met each other while studying at the University of Otago in the 1960s and went on to become school teachers. They began their love affair with Staveley in 1972 when they bought a historic cottage as a holiday home.

They later renovated it and used it as the accommodation wing of their eco-tourism business, after building their own home nearby.

Mr Jowett is a former school principal of Mackenzie College in Fairlie, and as much as he enjoyed the leadership role, his favourite teaching experiences were from a previous era, when he led sixth

form biology field trips to Kaikoura.

This was the limit of his guiding experience when he set up Tussock and Beech Ecotours, but that did not stop him from throwing himself into the role with fervour.

He and Mrs Jowett established the business after retiring early and enjoyed taking people from all over the world on tours in the area, to view and photograph its spectacular scenery and wildlife.

He had noticed a reduction in

birdlife over the years.

Bush birds such as riflemen and tom tits were only quite rarely seen, however, they are now much more rare. Bellbirds were often heard in the bush, but he had fears over just how their numbers were faring. The wrybill, a river bird, was a favourite with many people on his ecotours, but as a species in the area it was “just hanging on”.

“Our bush is typical of forest throughout New Zealand, it’s pretty silent now,” Mr Jowett said.

“I think it’s more silent now than it was then.”

Highlights include capturing a rare glimpse of a tui in the area some years ago and the commitment of Mid Canterbury conservationists.

Forest and Bird Ashburton branch members and other conservationists in the area had behind them a legacy of hard work and achievement they could be proud of, he said. There was Mid Canterbury’s Harris Reserve,

raised awareness of Ashburton’s black billed gulls, wilding pine control initiatives and increased Ashburton District Council recognition of the need for biodiversity funding.

“It’s a district where certain people have stood up and accomplished projects,” Mr Jowett said.

And community trapping projects in the Ashburton Lakes area had been successful at reducing numbers of pests including feral cats and stoats, enabling the

survival of native water birds. As for controlling pests in the bush, Mr Jowett had no immediate solutions, as trapping in a forest environment would not result in improvements long-term. He applauded a recent Department of Conservation-led wasp baiting project, and said Mid Cantabrians themselves could help by planting in their gardens to encourage native birds.

Since retiring their business, Mr and Mrs Jowett have undertaken

contract birding throughout New Zealand, for American and United Kingdom birding groups, and this is something they plan to continue from their new base.

They loved seeing the enjoyment visitors received from witnessing New Zealand’s unique fauna.

“We don’t have a lot of species of birds, and those we do have are getting fewer and fewer, but we have some unique birds they are not going to see anywhere else in the world,” Mr Jowett said.

Bringing the Christchurch C

hristchurch’s Arts Centre has been a regular weekend haunt for generations of Ashburton families, but since the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 the historic precinct has been offlimits.

That’s all about to end, however, with a restoration project under way that will see the complex progressively open its doors to visitors over the next three years.

But this year will be a big one on the arts centre calendar with more than half the site scheduled to be back in business by the end of this year.

Former Ashburtonian Caroline Fenton (Lucas) is the public face of the restoration project and says public interest is steadily building as people anticipate once again being able to enjoy an area of Christchurch that is as much a part of the city’s psyche as the Avon River.

In many ways the restoration project is about restoring memories and recreating the past, but it is also about harnessing the best of modern technology to ensure the heritage site is equipped to meet modern day standards and modern day needs, Caroline said.

“A lot of what will reopen will go back to its original use and all the character and the heritage features have been preserved, but there will also be new tenants and new facilities,” Caroline said.

As a working environment the arts centre was challenging but it was inspirational for people working there as they watched the buildings come back to life, she said.

The restoration is being managed by the Arts Centre of Christchurch Trust and while this was well funded there was always a need for more money.

Funds came from a range of sources, including payouts and grants, and as tenants

The restoration is estimated to cost almost $300 million.

That didn’t mean the trust would be chasing top dollar for sites, however as it wanted a good mix of commercial and community groups and was keen to ensure that those groups were able to afford working space, Caroline said.

Once the complex is fully restored there will be co-operative work areas where desks and small workspaces can be rented.

“There will be a lot of good reasons for people to come back here.

We’re looking for a new blend of tenants who will complement one another. We want to bring back markets, but we’re not quite sure of the shape they’ll take.”

The registry and gymnasium are now both fully restored, open and tenanted and during the rest of the year Boys’ High, the clock tower, the Great Hall, Rutherford’s Den, Classics, Chemistry, the Library, Common Room and Workshop will open. These buildings will eventually house a mix of gourmet food retailers, speciality retail outlets, community performance spaces, exhibition space, historical collections and arts and craft displays and working spaces.

The Great Hall is several months away from opening, but already it has a long list of bookings, Caroline said.

“And while this will look essentially the same, it will have underfloor

heating now and not just the fire.”

The arts were the core reason the centre existed, but they needed to be supported by a range of businesses and activities to ensure the entire complex was well used and was busy day and night, she said.

“The complex will be similar when it’s restored but it will be in much better condition than it was before the earthquakes. It already needed a lot of work and that work is now being done perfectly and professionally; over previous years it had become pretty hotchpotch.”

The restoration is being carried out to a standard that will future proof the complex, Caroline said.

The restored arts centre will be almost self-sustaining with water drawn from a well on site and the basement workshop will generating the complex’s power Once completely restored, the arts centre would be visually very similar to the original with heritage features carefully restored and this would ensure visitors would feel they were stepping back in time, but the discomforts of the past would be well gone, Caroline said.

One of the most popular stopping points for visitors had been Le Café in the clock tower building accessed from Worcester Boulevard and this iconic space had been restored, retaining the narrow staircase and mezzanine floor but there would be a new business trading from the site.

Across the complex there are 23 buildings, all of which will eventually be restored, reopened and let to new tenants. About 50 per cent of the complex will be open by the end of this year.

move the chicken from the pan and set aside.

Ashburton Gymnastics Club’s Samantha Holden passed the recreation gold badge and incentive award level six in the space of a week in Christchurch.

World Cup ‘great experience’

Mick Hooper has returned to Ashburton after representing New Zealand at the Masters Hockey World Cup in Canberra.

Hooper was picked for the New Zealand Men’s 55+ team following two successful trials.

The 55-year-old was one of 40 trialists at Auckland’s North Harbour Stadium in January before the group was cut down to 26 for a second trial in Palmerston North.

New Zealand and Hooper were downed 2-1 by Scotland in their opening World Cup match before losing out to Ireland 3-2 and eventual winners England 2-0.

Hooper’s side then recorded their first win with a convincing 4-0 victory over South Africa and toppled Wales 3-0, but a 10-1 hiding from hosts Australia in the last round-robin fixture condemned New Zealand to a fifth-sixth place playoff against Ireland.

New Zealand ended the tournament on a high, however, with a 2-1 win over the Irish to secure fifth place on the ladder.

Hooper, who played in a midfield role, said the experience was enjoyed by all, with a high level of hockey on display.

“It was a great experience and we all had a good time,” he said.

“We were perhaps two games short, with us being in New Zealand we couldn’t all get together and play a couple of games first.

“I think that would have made a difference.”

Hooper credited the hosts for a fine job and praised the tournament’s facilities, but was unsure as to whether he will trial for the under-60 team in two years’ time.

“It was a great set up, they had three water based turfs all in the same venue and one with a big grandstand.

“It was good, really good,” he said.

“It’ll be in a northern hemisphere, we’ll see how we go in two years’ time.”

Hooper will return to action in the local division for his club side Collegians tomorrow, when they take on Wakanui.

Atlanta dump Boston out of playoffs

Atlanta have advanced to a second round NBA playoff match-up with Cleveland after eliminating Boston with a 104-92 victory in game six yesterday.

Paul Millsap had 17 points and eight rebounds while Al Horford and Kent Bazemore each scored 15 for Atlanta, who led by as many as 28 in the second half.

It was Atlanta’s first playoff series win over Boston in nearly 60 years, and they will now go on the road for the opening game of their series against the Cavaliers on Monday.

The Hawks lost all three meetings with the Cavaliers during the regular season by an average of 9.7 points, Cleveland having also swept

Atlanta when the two teams met in last season’s Eastern Conference finals.

Isaiah Thomas had a double-double with 25 points and 10 assists for the Celtics, who shot just 36.2 per cent from the field yesterday.

While the Hawks and Cavs have already advanced, Toronto and Charlotte can do the same overnight should they close out their respective series’ against Indiana and Miami.

Also the surprising Portland Trailblazers can book a second round match-up with Golden State in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs with a win in game six of their series against the LA Clippers.

Five of the six gold medallists from the 2012 Olympics will be in Rio defending their titles.

Of the five – double scullers Nathan Cohen and Joseph Sullivan, both retired, are the exceptions – mark kayaker Lisa Carrington and coxless pair Eric Murray and Hamish Bond down as the warmest of favourites; shot putter Val Adams and 470 sailors Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie as certainly part of any serious conversation about where the medals in their disciplines will go.

Which leaves Mahe Drysdale.

He’s been among the titans of single sculling since he took possession of the seat in 2005.

His win in London was a triumph of getting past adversity, both in the leadup and after the hurt of his Beijing Games experience in 2008, when he won a terrific bronze after battling illness both before and during the final.

Now, at 37, Drysdale remains a dominant figure in his sport.

He will turn up in Rio probably level pegging in the favouritism stakes with his great rival Ondrej Synek of the Czech Republic.

There are younger scullers coming through but Drysdale is adamant: the key showdown in Rio will be between the 33-yearold Czech and himself.

The last nine world championships, dating back to 2005 have been shared between them.

No one else has had a look in.

Drysdale’s won five titles; Synek four. Synek has won silver at the last two Games. There’s little to split them. They have had a hegemony over the discipline which no one has been able to break.

Funny how fate can play a part in sporting careers.

Drysdale got a start in rowing during his university days when some friends cajoled him into helping form a crew for an Easter tournament.

The idea of going to an Easter university event appealed.

“I was a complete novice,” he said. “I’d always dreamt as a young kid of one day going to the Olympics. But it never got to the point where I thought I’m really good enough at any sport.

“I wouldn’t say I was naturally talented in any way, but it’s definitely a sport where the longer you do it, the better you get.”

Drysdale took a break to concentrate on university studies, and the spur to get him back on the water came at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

“In a lot of ways it was timing. If I was in the same position now I wouldn’t even have a shot. That’s where the standards have gone.

“But back then there were very few people around.”

In brief Call-up for Khawaja Usman Khawaja has earned a belated Indian Premier League call-up, almost 12 weeks after being snubbed in the competition’s auction. Khawaja, who top-scored for Australia during last month’s World T20, was snapped up by Rising Pune Supergiants yesterday. The gifted left-hander was summoned following injuries to batsmen Kevin Pietersen and Faf du Plessis. The 29year-old, who scored two centuries and averaged 172.5 during the 2015-16 Big Bash League season, had been passed in after multiple rounds of bidding.

One pink ball test?

The body representing Australia’s cricketers is lobbying for only one pink-ball Test to be played during the 2016-17 international summer.

At this stage, two are slated in for this summer with one against Pakistan at the Gabba and another with South Africa at Adelaide Oval.

However, Cricket Australia (CA) is meeting stern resistance from its South African counterparts, who fear a lack of preparation with the pink ball could hurt their chances going into the potential series decider.

JION International Karate Dojo Ashburton’s competitors were in fine form at the recent New Zealand Open Championships in Christchurch.

The 19-strong team were

coached by junior instructor Jessica Windhorst and chief instructor Thorsten Windhorst.

In total JION IKDA brought home a haul of 14 medals, five silver and nine bronze, amongst strong competition from the North Island and Tahiti.

In the Kata section, Sophie Smith achieved a silver medal while Isabel Wang, Rosie Gray, Madison Soal and Max Nicol produced determined performances to earn bronze medals.

The club also had plenty of success in the Kumite section

with Temperance Adamson, Madison Soal, Jack McIntosh and Kylie Burrowes taking out silver medals and Sophie Smith, Ryan Richan, Rosie Gray, Kaimana Acidera and Taylah Burrowes awarded bronze medals.

Queensland Firebirds coach Roselee Jencke has lunged for the underdog tag ahead of today’s blockbuster trans-Tasman netball grand final rematch against the NSW Swifts in Brisbane. It is the first meeting between the two sides - the competition’s only remaining unbeaten teams - since last year’s memorable decider, when the Firebirds trailed all game but stole an incredible win in the final seconds. The Swifts are currently top of the ladder, but only ahead of the Firebirds by goal difference.

Methven, Celtic on collision course The third week of ACL Premier Grade Netball produced wins for Methven, Celtic and Hampstead at the EA Networks Centre Stadium on Thursday evening.

The evening’s action began with a replay of last year’s final as Methven took on College in the 6.30pm fixture.

There may be new faces in both teams, but the result was the same – a Methven victory.

Having already accounted for Hampstead (31-26) in their season opener, and Rakaia (53-8) a week later, Greta Currie’s side were heavy favourites to add a third successive win to their tally.

The opening quarter was a tightly contested affair, with College looking to utilise their speed, but the more experienced Methven managed to edge a narrow 13-10 lead at the first interval.

In the second quarter, Methven widened the margin to seven at 24-17 as Sarah Paton and Becky Marett dominated in the midcourt.

College rallied in the third quarter, with a valiant display at both ends of the court, but were again outscored nine goals to seven.

An improved final stanza saw College match Methven’s eight goals but the

damage was already done as the reigning champions took a deserved 41-32 victory.

Celtic Auric Energy A 35 Rakaia A 14

Celtic’s unbeaten run continued with a 35-14 victory over winless Rakaia while defending the Premier Grade Challenge Trophy for a third time in the process.

Ange Leadley’s ladies were quick out of the traps, putting up 13 goals in the first quarter to Rakaia’s three.

Celtic then scored 14 more in the second period as Brans Surridge’s side struggled to contain the greens’ relentless attacking threats.

Rakaia were more resolute in the second half, conceding eight more over the two periods and firing back with seven goals of their own, but it was too little, too late.

Celtic will now turn their attention to next week’s showdown with fellow frontrunners Methven, where both teams’ 100 per cent records will be under threat.

“It will be an intense game and we won’t be able to make any mistakes against a side like Methven, so we will be working on reducing our error rate,” said Leadley.

Methven coach Greta Currie is also anticipating a tough battle when the two sides meet on Thursday.

“Next week will certainly be a challenge, Celtic have been looking awesome,” she said.

“We had a slow start each quarter against College, so will look to work on that during the week, either way we will get a tough game.”

Hampstead Hotel Ashburton A 36 United KFC A 11 Hampstead continued to keep the pressure on pace setters Celtic and Methven with a second win.

Cindy Meadows’ team were convincing for a 36-11 victory over United.

A 12-2 lead after the first quarter blew out to 22-5 at halftime as United had no answers for a determined Hampstead.

The second half was more of the same as Hampstead never looked troubled.

After finishing bottom of the ladder last year, the rejuvenated Hampstead will be favourites for another win against Rakaia next week, but Meadows insisted there is still plenty of hard work to be done.

“Last night was definitely a team performance and this is something the team have worked hard on,” she said.

“We will continue to work on getting free to the ball, offering and re-offering, plus look at improving how we perform as the game progresses.”

An ill-timed social media post by out-offavour Warriors centre Konrad Hurrell has added fuel to speculation coach Andrew McFadden has lost the support of his players.

Hurrell is one of six players reprimanded

by McFadden after enjoying a late night out in Auckland on Tuesday following Monday’s 42-0 Anzac Day defeat.

Veteran players Manu Vatuvei, Ben Matulino and Bodene Thompson, and young front-rowers Sam Lisone and Albert Vete, were all dropped from the side named to play St George Illawarra tomorrow.

Hurrell was also out with the group on Tuesday and was subsequently excluded from selection.

The incident, together with the team’s inconsistent performances, fuel the public’s perception the players don’t respect McFadden, who is under huge pressure after achieving three wins in their last 16 games.

Hurrell added weight to that perception when he retweeted a post saying: “Six Warriors do no show to review hui. Id say that’s a review of the coach in itself #faithgone #tautokotheboys @konmanhurrell @ ManuVatuvei” The post was quickly removed from Hurrell’s account.

Hurrell has form in regards to social media faux pas and late night indiscretions.

In 2014, he was investigated by the Warriors and the NRL’s integrity unit after a video showing him involved in a sex act appeared on social media.

In brief Looking for lost mojo As the Blues prepare for a rare late-afternoon match against the Rebels at Eden Park today, one thing in particular should be occupying their minds rediscovering their attacking mojo.

They are bottom of the table for average tries per match in the New Zealand conference, a shame given the fact that one of the first and last things opposition coaches used to warn about before a match was their counter-attack.

Tough test for 1st XV

Ashburton College’s 1st XV will kick off their Crusaders Secondary Schools-UC Championship campaign against last season’s beaten finalists Shirley Boys’ High School at the showgrounds today.

College were narrowly downed

by Timaru Boys’ before registering convincing wins over Waimea College and Marist College Canberra in their preseason fixtures, but today’s visitors will

offer up a much tougher test.

Last year’s 32-13 final loss to St Bede’s College was a bitter pill to swallow for a Shirley Boys’ side on the cusp of their first ever Crusader region 1st XV championship, and will be gunning to start their season with a bang today.

Six of last year’s ninth place finishing team will return to the fray for Ashburton College.

Lock Ashton McArthur, wing Kerry Claydon-Wade, second five Jason Gill, centre Ali Prescott, halfback Connor O’Grady and

blindside flanker and skipper Max Stapleton will be out to right last year’s wrongs and book a coveted top-eight berth.

College will be without three players for tomorrow’s clash with hooker Josh Wotton, prop Connor Breen and halfback O’Grady picking up injuries in training.

Ashburton College 1st XV manager Dave McArthur said his players will not be intimidated by today’s formidable opponents, but rather use the encounter to gauge their progress.

“She’ll be a stern test, that’s for sure.

“My understanding is that their squad is pretty unchanged from last year, they’ll be big and strong,” he said.

“But being at home brings a few advantages so we’re just going to fly in to them and see how we go.”

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie has come out swinging over scrum-gate, saying he is “bloody angry” at claims he manipulated safety rules to secure the win against the Hurricanes. Rennie is adamant that events which led to the implementation of Golden Oldie scrums at Westpac Stadium were legitimate.

New teams ‘need time’

It is a simple game at the end of the day.

Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph says the team has just been working hard and concentrating on the basics as it begins what is shaping as a crucial three-week block of games.

He was pleased with the response to the close loss to the Sharks last week.

“I think the players and the coaching team have had a look at that performance and while we were happy with our effort we let ourselves down with the execution.

“We have worked really hard on

getting that right,’’ Joseph said.

“That is just through practice.

“You tell the players not to put so much pressure on themselves.

Just practise catching and passing.’’

He said players just had to get back to what they were playing for.

“It is just back to basics, really.

“Guys have talked about enjoying their rugby, enjoying preparing every day and going out there and if that is enough to get us across the line then so be it.

“But if it is not then we just have to work that wee bit harder and smarter. But I think we are in a good spot.

Super Rugby’s three expansion sides have performed as well as expected this season as they struggle to adapt to regular travel requirements and the higher intensity of games, according to southern hemisphere rugby’s boss Andy Marinos. The competition was expanded to 18 teams with the return of the Kings in South Africa and new entries from Japan (Sunwolves) and Argentina (Jaguares). At the halfway stage, all three teams have won only one game each and some of their performances have caused concern that the tournament has expanded too quickly and the new teams lack depth.

NZ Warriors fans let down – yet again W

ho would be a Warriors fan?

Last weekend, for the first time this season, I sat down to actually watch a whole Warriors game, knowing from history that this would be the one to turn their season; the game that would launch their shot at making the final eight, and then going to finally snare that elusive grand final win.

Many times in the past they have used the clash against the high-flying Storm to stake their claim as the competition dark horses and this one was going to be even more special with the added Anzac occasion to gee up the players, not to mention that a couple of those players were expensive imports who had yet to hit their straps and were undoubtedly going to use this stage to really make their presence felt.

And that occasion truly started in fine, deeply emotional fashion, with everyone getting right into the Anzac spirit - is there a a more piercing piece of music

The example set by co-captains Johnathan Thurston and Matt Scott has led the way for North Queensland players to sacrifice big dollars and stay to build an NRL dynasty, Michael Morgan says. Lachlan Coote became the latest player to spurn lucrative rival offers and re-sign with the defending champions in a bid to launch another title tilt. Coote’s signature ensures the Cowboys will keep their spine for years to come after five-eighth Thurston (until 2017), halfback Michael Morgan (2018) and hooker Jake Granville (2018) also opted to stay.

So, scene set, all in readiness for a tremendous tussle, a fearsome clash of the titans – but somebody forgot to tell the Warriors all this.

A couple of minutes into the game the Storm wandered through a non-existent defensive line and set their very own scene for the carnage to come.

The game of league is pretty simple; if the opposition has the ball you get up right in their faces as fast as you can and smash them with great vengeance and furious anger (thank you Samuel L. Jackson), so next time they get passed the ball they’re looking up, just for that fleeting moment, to see where you are.

The game is then won; you give the ball to your own Magic Johnsons and put lots of points on the board.

lots of time and space to do, well, whatever they wanted.

Some may point to the fact that Simon Mannering, one of the Warriors’ staunchest players for years, was off the field with a horrendous injury, but even that was well after the first half had been played out, one of the most depressing 40 minutes the six remaining Warriors fans have ever suffered through.

Where are the hard men, the Kevin Campions of today, who knew how to hit people so they stayed hit?

They seem to be on the roster, but just don’t seem to be doing any hitting.

And now half the team has been stood down because they

went out and celebrated their abysmal loss till 3am, an interesting insight into their team spirit.

I’d love to be a fly on the wall at the board meetings when they discuss their “investments” and how much of a return they’re getting for the huge money they have outlaid for marque players – and coaches.

Is Andrew McFadden the problem, the latest in a long line, who has the firepower at his disposal, but is unable to find the trigger to let loose that firepower?

It’s hard to imagine he’ll still be coach at the end of May if the current trend continues, but where do they go?

Ivan Cleary is a name that’s screaming out from the bleachers, but it would appear that politics at high levels means that’s not going to be an option.

So the long-suffering fans are stuck with yet another year of dismal failure, after yet another pre-season of overhyped promise that just failes to deliver.

Injury-hit Wests Tigers have bounced back from their thrashing at the hands of Canberra in emphatic style with a 30-22 NRL defeat of South Sydney, snapping a six-game losing streak. The Tigers raced out to a 20-0 lead early and resisted a Rabbitohs fightback which narrowed their lead to two points before the visitors rallied again to claim a vital win. Belted 60-6 by the Raiders last week, with captain Aaron Woods already sidelined, the Tigers lost Tim Grant in the lead up to Thursday’s clash at ANZ Stadium, and were further decimated when James Tedesco didn’t return after struggling with a shoulder injury in the first half. But with his halves partner watching on, Luke Brooks piloted the Tigers to their most impressive win of the season over a flat Rabbitohs. - AAP

Souths were ‘garbage’ South Sydney coach Michael Maguire has fired a furious broadside at his side after the underperforming Rabbitohs crashed to their fourth successive loss – a new low under the premiership-winning mentor. Souths were humbled 30-22 by a vastly understrength Wests Tigers at ANZ Stadium on Thursday night. Top spots beckoning

Mid Canterbury United will have the chance to go top of the division two points table today, but they’ll need to beat league leaders Halswell United FGs at the Ashburton Domain first.

United have won three of their four outings so far this season and downed FC Twenty Thunder Panthers 2-1 at Burnside Park last Saturday in a determined display.

Goals from Eddie Kettle and Greg Feutz saw United through to their first away win of the campaign, but a tough test is expected against the unbeaten HU FGs. Today’s visitors thumped FC Twenty Falcons 5-2 last weekend and put five past Selwyn a fortnight ago, but Mid Canterbury coach Martin Fitzgerald will hope his side’s fine run of form will see them through.

Meanwhile, Mid Canterbury United Masters will also be in action today against FC Twenty Rebels at Upper Riccarton Domain.

The Masters are currently second on the ladder of the masters second division, one point adrift of pacesetters Waimak Villa.

Paul Bradford’s men will be heavy favourites to take the three points against a Rebels outfit that have only registered one win so far.

Today’s fixtures: Mid Canterbury United v HU FG’s, Ashburton Domain, 2.30pm. Mid Canterbury United Masters v FC Twenty Rebels, Upper Riccarton Domain, 2.30pm.

responded by announcing a variety of measures designed to promote growth. The United States Federal Reserve backtracked on its earlier indications about increasing interest rates further. A rebound in oil and base metal prices also helped improve investor sentiment.

As confidence returned to financial markets, the March quarter ended strongly, with New Zealand a particular standout.

The surprise 0.25 per cent reduction in our local cash rate (with potentially more cuts on the horizon), has again underpinned higher yielding assets in the New Zealand fixed interest and equity markets.

With the increased probability of interest rates staying ‘lower for longer’, investors continue

to seek out alternatives to bank term deposits.

In the shorter-term, China’s economic transition will likely be one of the key drivers of investor sentiment.

Other potentially unsettling issues include the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the direction of commodity prices, heightened political and social unrest in Europe (the United Kingdom referendum on EU membership is scheduled for June 23) and in November we should know the outcome of the United States Presidential election.

Financial markets will of course always reflect the anxieties of investors, but 2016 could be one of those years where there is greater than average market volatility.

This year began with a sharp correction across many of the world’s share market indices with concerns largely based around the state of the global economy and the impact this may have on future corporate earnings.

The falls were initially sparked by the Chinese share market as new circuit breakers, which were designed to limit daily movements in excess of 5 per cent, were tested to the full. Ironically, following the removal of these by the stock exchange regulators, the market has since steered a relatively steady course.

Gold was one of the better performers as so-called safe haven buying pushed up the spot price to nearly $US200 per ounce, the biggest rise since 2011.

Z Energy shares jumped to a record after the Commerce Commission approved its bid to buy rival Caltex and Challenge! petrol station chains, saying price co-ordination at some stations wasn’t enough to turn it down but that regions where Gull stations operate are more competitive.

The competition watchdog’s delayed and 3:1 majority decision on the $785 million deal gives Z about 49 per cent of the retail transport fuels market and lets NZX-listed Z buy the ‘downstream’ assets of American oil giant Chevron, which is exiting all but its exploration activities in New Zealand. Z’s clearance includes an undertaking to sell 19 sites and one truck-stop.

The shares climbed 11 per cent to $7.90, valuing the company at $3.2 billion.

Matt Goodson, managing director at Salt Funds Management, said the deal was good for Z but bad for consumers.

“It certainly wasn’t priced as 100 percent certain to happen, there’s obviously been a move, and it also appears the Caltex NZ business is travelling a little better than the previous numbers,” Goodson said.

“It’s certainly a major win for some very capable management at Z Energy, and a significant loss for the New Zealand consumer given the very sharp movement in petrol margins in recent years and the fact that massive vertical integration remains in place.”

The gypsy life and lovin’ it Erin Tasker

I

t’s a brave woman who sells all of her worldly belongings, buys a bus and joins the gypsies.

That woman is Kerry, a woman whose grey and blue locks graced the front cover of the Guardian yesterday.

She’s just one of many of the characters calling the Ashburton Domain home for the weekend, as it hosts the annual Original Gypsy Fair. I say characters, because that’s what they are; they’re an interesting, intelligent, charismatic bunch of people who live the life they do because they want to, and they love it.

And good on them.

It’s not a life for everyone – I certainly couldn’t do what Kerry has done – but it’s a happy, content life.

In today’s world, many homes have at least one television, a computer, tablets, numerous cellphones, and people live surrounded by all of life’s mod-cons.

Many couldn’t imagine a world without them, let alone a world where your home has no shower, and a portaloo tucked under the bed.

The gypsies certainly aren’t technology free – and some house buses do have facilities like showers – but their life is much more basic than many of us could ever imagine.

Their vehicle is their home.

Their home is their workshop.

Their workshop is how they make the money to keep themselves on the road. That’s the life Kerry lives now and she wishes she’d done it sooner.

She used to have what most of us perceive as a ‘proper job’ and she raised three kids on her own.

But now, it’s her time, and her kids couldn’t be more supportive.

She travels the country making her beaded jewellery creations and clothes out of old men’s ties that she’s been collecting for years.

When she’s not creating, she’s exploring. Nights can often be spent parked up by a tranquil river or lake, and during the day she searches out op shops where she finds all sorts of treasures.

It’s hard work – harder than Kerry ever expected. The weekend fairs are non-stop from go to whoa.

There’s the set-up, then two days of meeting, greeting and selling, before taking it all down and moving on to the next town to start all over again.

But it’s a life she loves. They all do.

Wicked ban: A first step in right direction

ensorship officials have banned three slogans on Wicked Campers vehicles that promote drug use and sexual violence, each of them ruled as objectionable publications by the Chief Censor.

What a breakthrough, and what a smart decision. I could probably lump a few more in there too, but baby steps. We’ll go with the three slogans for start.

Some of them are hideous – censors referred to the three they were dealing with as “totally overstepping the mark” – and linked drug use to children.

In one slogan, Snow White is using a crack cocaine pipe. In another, Scooby Doo characters are smoking pot. In a third, a Dr Seuss character is talking about smoking marijuana.

More slogans will go before the Chief Censor and hopefully we’ll see these vans taken off our roads too. Here are a few grim examples: One says “A man would be interested in a woman’s mind if it bounced gently as she walked.”

Another: “Your thighs won’t touch if my head’s between them.”

And this: “In every princess there is a slut who wants to try it just once.”

See? Hideous.

Wicked Campers’ lawyers said the slogans “attract and reflect Wicked’s young customer base through its extensive use of popular culture and touchstones.”

What a bunch of tripe. They

also argued the right to freedom of expression. They said what they wrote on their vans was no different from an individual displaying artwork in a gallery.

Rubbish. Utter rubbish.

There is, sadly, those among

us who believe the slogans are fine. They’re funny. It’s the Kiwi way, we’re just having a bit of a laugh. That we’re all getting a bit oversensitive about it.

But to those people, I would say this: There have been two big stories that have dominated the media agenda in the last 24 hours.

There’s been this story of the Wicked Campers slogans which promote drug use and sexual violence, and the story of an alleged teenage sex attacker on the streets of Auckland who’s targeting and groping women.

We live in a country with high rates of domestic violence and high rates of sexual violence.

So you tell me at what point I should laugh at some of these slogans.

Tell me at what point I should see the hilarity in the slogan, “To all you virgins out there, thanks for nothing”.

Banning the Wicked Camper slogans is not just about cleaning up our image in the eyes of tourists, it’s about how we perceive women. It’s about the images and slogans we’re subjecting our children to.

This ban is a victory for common sense, for common decency, and a first step in the right direction.

Love is what distinguishes Jesus’ disciples C

hristians throughout the world have just celebrated Easter.

John’s gospel tells us that at the end of the last supper, after Judas had left, Jesus spoke to the remaining disciples.

He told them he would only be with them for a little while longer and they would not be able to go with him.

He then gave them a new commandment.

“A new commandment I give to you, ‘As I have loved you, so you must love one another’.”

Loving each other is not a new command, it was already there in the Old Testament (Leviticus 19:18) “You shall love your neigh-

bour as yourself”.

The newness of the command to love each other is found in the words “as I have loved you”.

Firstly, the command is new because it is a command to live out the love of Jesus.

Secondly, the command is new because it is a command to live on the love of Jesus.

The words “as I have loved you” contain a pattern for our love for each other and they contain a power for our love for

each other.

We live out the love that we see in Jesus. Our standard is Christ’s love for us.

Loving others “as I have loved you” was to be the distinguishing mark of Christ’s followers.

Jesus said: “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

What does this commandment mean for us today?

There will always be dissent among people.

We live in a world where millions of people live in fear.

We hear of the refugee problem and we say “What can we do about the problem? It is too big for us to have any effect.”

From small beginnings can come big results.

Let us start in a small way by remembering to love our neighbours.

Casualties rise in Aleppo Airstrikes and artillery have killed more than 60 people in Aleppo, including dozens at a hospital in a rebel-held neighbourhood, as Syria’s largest city was turned once again into a major battleground in the civil war, officials said yestersday.

Aid agencies warn that Aleppo is on the brink of a humanitarian disaster with the collapse of a two-month ceasefire and stalled peace talks.

The intensified violence – by far the worst since the partial ceasefire began – coincides with reports of a military buildup outside Aleppo that many fear is a prelude for a government attempt to force a complete siege of the city’s neighbourhoods.

Battle-hardened residents were shocked by the bloodshed. Opposition activists accused the government of carpet-bombing rebel-controlled areas, while Syrian state media said more than 1000 mortar rounds and rockets were fired at government-held districts, killing 22 people.

Treading carefully with claim to Golan Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sparked a new diplomatic brushfire by declaring that the Golan Heights, seized from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war, is and should remain “under Israel’s sovereignty permanently.”

But following tough international criticism, Israeli officials said Netanyahu’s statements had been misconstrued and that a 1981 decision to apply Israeli law to the strategic plateau fell short of annexation.

The debate offers a window into a more nuanced Israeli perspective that, despite statements from the country’s hardline political leadership, continues to leave the door open, just barely, to a peace deal when Syria’s civil war finally winds down.

For now, the debate is largely academic. Syria has been engulfed in civil war for nearly five years, and there is no end in sight.

With Syria, and the Syrian

side of the Golan, divided between Syrian troops and various rebel forces, there is nobody to talk to, even if Israel decided to open negotiations.

But the Golan remains central to any future peace deal with Syria, and its fate is a key part of a 2002 Saudi initiative that offered Israel peace with the Arab world in exchange for a full withdrawal from all territories captured in the 1967 Mideast war.

While that offer is usually

connected to areas sought by the Palestinians, the Golan is also considered occupied land by the international community.

Past Israeli leaders, including Netanyahu himself, have held talks with Syria about control of the Golan. So when Netanyahu convened his Cabinet for a first-ever meeting in the Golan on April 17, he triggered an international uproar by calling it “sovereign” Israeli territory.

Beyonce finally put the rumours to rest and publicly declared her love for Jay Z and their four-year-old daughter Blue Ivy as she closed the show with Halo. “I want to dedicate this song to my family, thank you guys for supporting me. I want to dedicate this song to my beautiful husband, I love you so much,” she told the crowd at Marlins Park. “I love you so much. Blue, I love you so much.”

Investigators look at overdose Investigators are looking into whether Prince died from an overdose and whether a doctor was prescribing him drugs in the weeks before he was found dead at his home in suburban Minneapolis, a law enforcement official said.

The official said that among the things investigators are looking at is whether a doctor was with Prince on a plane that made an emergency landing in Illinois less than a week before the star died.

The official said investigators are also looking into what kind of drugs were on the plane and at Prince’s house in suburban Minneapolis.

The official also confirmed some details that have previously been reported by other media outlets, including TMZ. Prince’s plane made an emergency stop in Moline, in western Illinois, on April 15 and he was found unconscious on the plane, the official said. The person said first responders gave Prince a shot of Narcan, which is used in

The official said the so-called save shot was given when the plane was on the tarmac in Moline as Prince returned to Minneapolis following a performance in Atlanta.

Narcan can be used on people even if an overdose isn’t confirmed because it wouldn’t necessarily be harmful.

While it’s premature to say where the investigation is heading, the mention of a doctor calls to mind other celebrity deaths, including Michael Jackson’s.

Jackson’s doctor, Conrad Murray, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for his role in prescribing a powerful anaesthetic that contributed to the pop star’s death in 2009.

A second law enforcement official told AP that prescription drugs were discovered at Prince’s home when the musician was found dead on April 21.

The official did not elaborate.

An autopsy has been performed, but results aren’t expected for three to four weeks. The search warrant for Prince’s Paisley Park home and studio — carried out the day of his death — was filed yesterday under seal at the request of investigators who said it would hamper their investigation if contents were public. - AP

■ SOUTH KOREA

Suspected mid-range North Korean missiles fail North Korea attempted unsuccessfully to launch two suspected powerful intermediate-range missiles yesterday, South Korean defence officials said, bringing the number of apparent failures in recent weeks to three.

The reported failures come ahead of a major North Korean ruling party meeting next week at which leader Kim Jong Un is believed to want to place his stamp more forcefully on a government he inherited after his dictator father’s death in late 2011.

The launches were believed to be the second and third attempted tests of a Musudan, a new intermediate-range missile that could one day be capable of reaching far-off US military

bases in Asia and the Pacific.

Early yesterday, a projectile fired from a North Korean northeastern coastal town crashed a few seconds after lift-off, a South Korean Defence Ministry official said, requesting anonymity because of office rules. It wasn’t immediately known whether it crashed on land or into the sea.

Then, later in the day, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that the North fired another Musudan missile near Wonsan but that launch also presumably failed. There were no other details.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) confirmed that North Korea attempted two missile launches that did not pose a

threat to North America. It did not provide details in a brief statement.

The Pentagon said in a statement later Thursday that both launch attempts failed.

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry called the launches a provocation and said it will try to increase international pressure on North Korea.

Japan’s UN Ambassador Motohide Yoshikawa condemned what he called a “series of grave and very clear violations of Security Council resolutions.”

“This is a threat to Japan’s national security,” he said.

Yoshikawa said the UN Security Council is preparing a statement in response to the launches.

Gay marriage cleared Colombia’s highest court has cleared the way for samesex couples to marry in the conservative Roman Catholic nation. Gay couples in Colombia were already allowed to form civil unions. But yesterday’s ruling by the Constitutional Court for the first time allows them to wed the same as heterosexual couples.

The decision was widely expected after a 6-3 decision earlier this month rejected a justice’s opinion that would have prevented public notaries from registering same-sex unions as marriages.

Prison term extended The long-time girlfriend of Boston gangster James “Whitey” Bulger was sentenced yesterday to an additional 21 months in prison by a judge who said she had shown a “twisted” sense of loyalty to Bulger by refusing to testify about whether other people helped him while he was a fugitive. Catherine Greig, 65, already is serving an eight-year sentence for helping Bulger while he was a fugitive. She spent 16 years on the run with him before they were captured in Santa Monica, California, in 2011.

A trough of low pressure approaches the country tomorrow as a northerly flow develops over the South Island and strengthens on Monday, ahead of a second, more active front. The front moves onto the South Island on Monday and becomes slow moving there through to Wednesday.
