Catholic decline hits school BY DAISY HUDSON
DAISY.H@THEGUARDIAN.CO.NZ
New Zealand’s declining Catholic population has been blamed for a significant roll decrease at a Methven school. While most Mid Canterbury schools have been struggling to cater for an increasing number of students, Our Lady of the Snows school saw its roll decrease by a third between 2013 and 2014. In the space of one year the
roll dropped from 68 pupils to 45 – its lowest roll in over five years. The state-integrated primary school caters for pupils up to Year 8. Principal Tony Lamb attributed the 33 per cent drop to a lack of Catholic families in the area, as well as families leaving the area after relocating temporarily following the Christchurch earthquakes. “As a Catholic school we have restricted enrolments, so we’re

not open to the entire population,” he said. “We’re only open to Catholics and the very small percentage that the ministry allows us to take of non-Catholics.” Data obtained during the 2013 Census shows the number of people who affiliated themselves with Catholicism decreased by 3.2 per cent nationally. Mr Lamb said the school experienced dips in different year levels as Catholic families came
and went in Mid Canterbury, which he described as “fairly transient”. Mr Lamb said the school had seen a slight increase in new entrant numbers, but that was “nowhere near” as much of an increase as other schools in the district. In contrast, other non-secular schools in Mid Canterbury have felt the full force of the district’s population boom. Ashburton Christian School’s roll has more than doubled

since 2010, rising from 46 pupils to 95 in 2014. St Joseph’s School in Ashburton has also seen an increase, rising from 206 pupils to 226 over the same period. Mr Lamb said his school had not experienced the same trend because its enrolment conditions were stricter. “Perhaps one of the reasons we’re not seeing it is because the population boom hasn’t included a proportionate amount of Catholics,” he said.
