THE INDEPENDENT VOICE OF MID CANTERBURY
Police want drivers to stay mindful on Mid Canterbury’s roads, after prosecuting 234 traffic and vehicle regulatory offences in the district throughout the past financial year. Though overall crime and prosecuted charge rates are on the decline, the number of drivers breaking the law has remained relatively steady for the past four years, according to data collected by the Ministry of Justice and published by Statistics New Zealand this week.
Of the 794 total charges prosecuted over the past financial year, 234 were traffic and vehicle regulatory offences. Ninety were charges of exceeding the prescribed content of alcohol or other substance limit, marking an increase from last year. One hundred and twenty two were driving licence offences, 14 were regulatory driving offences and two were vehicle registration offences. Only court-imposed speeding fines are included in the data, of which there were six. Ashburton police senior sergeant Scott

Banfield said road police around the district were seeing room for improvement. “A lot of drivers hop on the highway and set their cruise control, but forget to be aware of their environment,” he said. While Banfield said this year’s road toll had not been “too bad” compared to previous years, NZTA still lists Canterbury as the third-highest region in the country for road deaths. “There’s lots of things happening on the roads – school buses, over-sized vehicles, cyclists – a lot of things to always be looking out for,” Banfield said.
