A joint venture between the community and its congregation could be the saviour of the Baring Square Methodist Church, says Historic Places Mid Canterbury chairwoman Julie Luxton.

That idea was floated at a public meeting about two years ago, but she believes the time is now for the idea to become a reality.

When Opus Architecture ticked the church site as its number one choice for the district’s new civic centre and library, the community responded with

outrage, making it very clear the site should be off the list.

“A lot of people are very supportive of saving the church and they’re saying they don’t want it demolished for a civic centre.

“But at the end of the day, the building’s future still goes back to the church to decide,” she said.

She believes the church leaders need to look at some kind of community buyin from people outside their church community to consider its future and look at options.

That option could be a private buyer,

a consortium or the Ashburton District Council. The buyer wasn’t important, it was their commitment to the strengthening and restoration of the church that counted, Luxton said.

“Historic Places believes this could be a centre the community could use, somewhere for smaller performance groups and somewhere the church could still use too.”

Mother and baby ‘top priority’

Since the start of the year 101 babies have been born in Ashburton, and a recent study claims births with midwives are more likely to run into issues.

The research project conducted by the University of Otago looked at 244,000 births over a five-year period.

These were compared with births where women had medical-led care or midwife-led care.

The study found babies born under medical-led care were less likely to suffer from oxygen deprivation, amongst other things.

However, the study did mention there was a need for further investigation to find out the specific reasons why midwife births had more issues.

Midwives operate independently from a district health board and according to the FindYourMidwife website, there are 12 in Ashburton.

Ashburton midwives Sandra Scott and Anna Campbell said since the start of the year 101 babies have been born in Ashburton.

Neither Scott nor Campbell had seen the research paper but

they said the health of the mother and her baby was always the number one priority.

Scott said most people opt for a midwife and find one within the first two or three months, however, people can also choose to have a private obstetrician, which is expensive.

Midwives see their pregnant clients with the women and see them throughout the pregnancy.

She said if there are any complications in the birth specialists in Christchurch are called and a plan is formulated.

While most women prefer to have their baby locally, it is usually better to go to Christchurch Women’s Hospital where they can provide secondary care for the baby.

However, if the birth progresses quickly she said it’s safer to have the baby in Ashburton where a midwive can get support from doctors or nurses, rather than rush to Christchurch in an ambulance or car.

Janet Whineray, Christchurch Women’s Hospital clinical director of obstetrics and gynaecology said they have a total of 16 specialists in obstetric care.

Rural, urban fire-fighting forces to be under one roof

Ashburton is leading the way in New Zealand when it comes to housing its rural and urban fire fighting forces under one roof.

As part of the Government’s review of the country’s fire services a new integrated authority, Fire and Emergency New Zealand was created and this resulted in Ashburton’s rural fire brigades becoming part of a greater MidSouth Canterbury service.

Those plans have now been signed off and Ashburton’s rural forces will join Mackenzie, Waim-

ate, Timaru and the Department of Conservation’s units under the one administrative umbrella.

Each unit, however, retains its own plant, machinery and assets.

The new rural district, however, has changed plans the Ashburton District Council had for housing its Ashburton unit, said council environmental services group manager Jane Donaldson.

Originally the council had planned to demolish the South Street station and rebuild this, but had now decided it was a better move to house Ashburton’s

urban and rural brigades in one complex, she said.

This will see the town’s Burnett Street station extended to provide space for both entities under one roof.

“The relocation is one of the first instances in the country of rural and urban fire services coming together since the Government established the new integrated authority, and the co-location will reflect the new direction of a unified fire force,” Donaldson said.

Building work is scheduled to commence in April 2017.

Vote return rate high

This year’s local body elections in the Ashburton District could be a record breaker in terms of votes cast.

With just over one week left until voting closes, the district currently has one of the highest return rates in the South Island at 23.40 per cent.

The means 5096 ballot papers out of the 21,774 distributed on September 16 have been completed and returned.

At stake are 12 seats for district councillors across the urban, western and eastern wards, the district’s mayoralty, six seats on the Ashburton Trust, and positions on Envi-

ronment Canterbury and the Canterbury District Health Board.

At the same mark in the 2013 elections, returns were much lower at 17.9 per cent, but in 2010 at this point, 32.1 per cent of ballot papers had been returned.

When voting closed in 2013, a last minute surge in returns saw the district hit a 48.9 per cent return, one of the highest in New Zealand; in 2010 final returns were even higher, 55.46 per cent.

At an 23.40 per cent the Ashburton District is doing better than many of its neighbours – Selwyn, 19.22 per cent, Christchurch City 16.77 per cent, Hurunui, 20.43 per cent, Waimakariri, 17.45 per cent and Timaru, 20.41 per cent.

“It’s a brilliant building on a brilliant site and it could become a real cultural centre. It’s such an opportunity but ultimately, it comes back to the church.”

For the Methodist congregation, however making a decision on the future of their church is a case of taking very tiny steps, said property committee spokesperson Ken Leadley.

For the past six years since the Canterbury earthquakes, church members have been grappling with the church’s future – demolish, restore and strengthen or sell, but making a decision was proving difficult with the congregation divided on the best way forward, Leadley said.

“We met last night (Tuesday)

and I’d say we’re half a step closer to a decision. It’ll be really slow, but that’s just the way it is. We’ve had a restoration committee of six in place for a long time and after last night I think there was a little bit more clarity.”

Before any decisions were made public they would need to go through the parish council and a congregational meeting, he said.

“For me, and that’s just me personally, a sale is not outside the bounds of possibility.”

While the church and its 3000 square metre site have not been valued, Leadley estimates the land and buildings could be worth around $2 million.

“I’d say to the council, if they want the building then they should step up and make an offer.”

Leadley said he respected the opinions of people who wanted to save the church but said a sale and restoration bid would always come back to money.

Pipe band brought couple together

A diamond ring is a great gift to receive any day of the week but particularly when it is your 60th wedding anniversary.

Peter Ireland gave his wife, Gwenda, the ring to celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary followed by lunch out today with friends and family at the Salmon Tales Cafe.

It was the passion of playing in a pipe band which brought the Irelands together in 1953 and it is that same hobby which saw them married three years later at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.

town afterwards when he saw Gwenda, a member of the City of Christchurch Ladies Band, with her group who had performed in the same concert.

As they waited for the bus they began to chat.

Sixty-three years later and it has not stopped.

Peter Ireland said he could still not believe his luck that day.

“I really didn’t think there was much chance.”

Gwenda said Peter meant “everything” to her and she was the lucky one.

“Peter is my rock … I don’t know how I would have done without him.”

After five children, 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren (with one more on the way) it was all Gwenda Ireland had dreamed of.

“It’s everything I’ve ever wanted.”

Peter Ireland said he worked on a farm in South Canterbury in the early years of their relationship and Gwenda, “a townie” followed him down and worked on the farm.

“She had to learn how to make butter.”

Peter said it was her adaptability which truly impressed him.

Within a few months Gwenda had served food to potential clients and was the “perfect” wife, Peter said.

“She just fell into it.”

Gwenda Ireland is also a member of the Methven Caledonian Pipe Band now and the happy duo are still strongly connected to the hobby which created their life together.

Craft bridges the age gap

Mudfish protection Funding has been approved for two new projects aimed at protecting mudfish habitat in Mid Canterbury. Environment Canterbury biodiversity officer Donna Lill updated the Ashburton Zone Committee on progress with existing Immediate Steps funded projects and present the two new mudfish projects for approval this week. The committee agreed to fund a project to fence off and control weed in a mudfish habitat at Lincoln Hills in the upper Hinds catchment to the tune of $9500, and another at Surrey Hills at a cost of $1950. To date the committee has approved 38 agreements, valued at $498,780, for environmental protection projects. A further $111,220 of Immediate Steps funding is still available. Twenty children from the ages of five to 10 had a sticky morning at the Winchmore Hall yesterday as they pasted alongside members of the Winchmore branch of Rural Women NZ. They all got stuck in with sparkles, glue and paint as they crafted Christmas stockings, face masks, ladybird birthday cards and door signs with their names on them. Winchmore branch president Marg Verrell said the children had fun. “We thought it was a lovely thing for the children to do.”

Time for reform breather

The Local Government Amendment Bill might have gone into hiding, but it won’t have gone away, says Ashburton mayor Angus McKay. Content in the bill around forced amalgamation of local authorities has been hotly opposed by New Zealand’s mayors and in the wake of presentations made to a government select committee where mayors outlined their objections, local government minister Pe-

seta Sam Lotu-liga has put his local government reforms on the back burner.

Any movement on the Better Local Services reforms has been pushed out to March, but that doesn’t mean the changes are dead in the water, McKay said.

“This has just given everyone a bit of time a bit of breathing space. It won’t go away but I believe it will come back in a redrawn form.”

While there was wholesale opposition to forced local body

amalgamations, the push towards councils working cooperatively had merit and this practice was already being followed by Ashburton, he said.

“We are already working with our neighbouring districts now in many ways and we’ll look to work further with them, but people in our district don’t want to amalgamate with anyone at this time.”

When the bill was drawn up, McKay believes the government under estimated the opposition individual local au-

thorities would voice over the issue of amalgamation. The delay was a small win for councils.

Ashburton wanted the best service it could for ratepayers and if that was achieved by working co-operatively with other local authorities then there was a lot to recommend continuing down this path, McKay said.

The council is already involved in working deals with neighbouring councils in areas such as roading, rural fire fighting and record keeping, he said.

Earthquake Commission chief executive Ian Simpson, who led the organisation through the aftermath of Canterbury earthquakes, has quit the role. The commission said yesterday Simpson was stepping down at the end of the year to become head of another Government agency, GNS Science.

Simpson took on the role in 2010, before two major quakes struck the Canterbury region. EQC chairman Sir Maarten Wevers said Simpson’s leadership during the commission’s most challenging period had been “outstanding”.

Before joining the EQC, Simpson held a senior role at the Accident Compensation Corporation and worked for various businesses including British Petroleum.

Body found in search Searchers looking for missing teenager Luke Cochrane have found a body. The Police National Dive Squad taking part in the search located the body in a waterway in Whitianga, police confirmed in a statement. Police believe it is Cochrane but formal identification is yet to take place.

The death will now be referred to the coroner. A police spokesman said the family had been advised and are “obviously very distraught but thankful for the support from the community”.

Council mediator bows out

To retiring Ashburton District councillor Don McLeod, it’s important to know when to call time on a job.

He did that with his long teaching career, that culminated in a principalship at Mt Hutt College and he’s done the same after a six year stint as a district councillor. And for him, calling time on a career is about leaving while you’re still enjoying what you’re doing, before you actually know it’s time to get out. Eight years ago he left teaching, opting to work on a farm for a complete change of pace, and that, he says was one of the best things he’s ever done.

Farming was followed by a stint back in the education sector before the option of standing for council came up.

“For me this was really about doing something for my community, so I thought, ‘why not’.”

Life around the council table, however, came with some surprises. Like many new councillors he realised he was quite ignorant of council processes and how the system worked. Coping with that meant keeping a very open mind, he said.

“I did expect bureaucracy and I was used to that in education but what I didn’t expect was some of the politicking that goes on behind the scenes. I don’t like that stuff and I don’t play those games so I found it a bit unsettling. And even after six years, I still don’t enjoy it; it’s something most people don’t realise goes on.”

For any new councillor, once they’ve come to grips with the way things are done, the challenge becomes making a meaningful contribution to council business, Don said.

During his two terms he earned a reputation as the councillor who could neatly sum up two sides of a debate and come up with a solution.

“I’ve spent a lot of my working life doing this, seeing the nub of an issue reasonably quickly. Probably one of the things I’d be most proud of, has been being able to find a way through issues.”

During his six years, the council has worked through several controversial projects such as the new art gallery and museum and the route for a second bridge across the Ashburton River.

“Those issues were tough on councillors and they were tough on their families.

The bridge created a huge amount of controversy. A number of people got on this bandwagon, often unfortunately without

all the knowledge, it was more a case of ‘not in my backyard’. It became very personal for a lot of people and there were so many comments made in public about what we should and shouldn’t do, It spilled over into

the second term too and we had a group of councillors who were clearly determined to overturn this decision,” he said.

And that meant the council was, at times, quite divided, Don said.

Don McLeod might be retiring as an Ashburton District councillor, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be taking life easy.

“Comments in the public arena around some of this stuff became quite personal.

I was even accused of treason by one letter writer and that was hurtful to my wife and my 97-year-old mum. And it’s not just me, others had this happen too and it does take its toll on you.”

When he picked up the fundraising chairman’s role for the art gallery and museum, Don said the groups were all on different sides of different fences. He quickly realised there were only two choices. Stop the project and go back 10 years or accept the situation and make the complex happen.

He managed to get the disparate groups to agree to move forward together to make the project happen.

“I guess it’s metaphorically banging heads together, a bit like you do as a principal in mediation.”

Looking ahead to election day, like his fellow retirees, Don is concerned that the new council will be very short on experience; more than half of the councillors could be first termers. He will, however, be happy to watch the results come in without pondering his own future.

His advice to those new councillors is to look at the big picture when making a decision rather than getting bogged down in the small stuff and to understand that their role is one of governance, not management of staff or staffing issues.

Looking ahead, Don says he can’t imagine not being involved in work of some kind, but first up there’s likely to be a bit of house and garden work, followed by travel, more golf and spending more time visiting the couple’s sons in Auckland and Dunedin.

He knows he’ll miss the cut and thrust of debates around the council table and he’ll miss the councillors who’ve had the courage and confidence in their beliefs to state their cause and not mince words.

“And then there are the staff, incredibly competent people who make a councillor’s life so much easier. I’ve learned a hell of a lot over those six years,” Don said.

He says he’s leaving at a time when the district is in great shape and good heart and while the civic building project is still a work in progress, no matter when you leave you leave jobs undone, he said.

“The council over the past six years has been positive, forward looking and it has made decisions in the long-term interests of the community and if I have one wish, one hope, it’s that it continues to do that.”

Low water ‘due Fostering craft among the young to irrigation’

Declining ground water levels are linked to the increase in irrigation in Mid Canterbury over the past decade, the Ashburton Zone Committee has been told.

At this week’s meeting ECan senior hydrologist Patrick Durney said 1023 wells had been sunk in the Hinds plains area in the last 10 years. Currently ground water levels are at very low levels, with no chance of recovering before this summer’s irrigation season.

Te Runanga o Arowhenua representative on the committee, John Henry said both Ngai Tahu and Arowhenua were very apprehensive about the number of water quotas handed out by ECan, because of the long-term consents.

Most water consents run for 20 years, with some extended to 30 years.

“In the past dry seasons had little impact on spring condi-

tions, but because of abstraction that is no longer the case, when you really need water in the dry seasons there’s none there,” Henry said.

“When are farmers going to understand there is only so much water? Farmers must adapt to the conditions, rather than (letting) the economy driving their decisions.”

He said the state of the region’s waterways and rivers was well documented.

“If water is already over-allocated and ECan can’t do anything about it, where do we go?”

However, ECan commissioner David Caygill said the regulatory authority does not get to “fiddle with the numbers to crank it down in the middle of a drought”.

Caygill said ECan had recommended no further consents be issued in the Hinds zone, on the recommendations of the zone committee, but could only do so where the rules had been changed to enable the decision.

A young embroiderer is hard to find these days but an Ashburton guild is trying to re-ignite the hobby.

Yesterday, the Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild organised a day-long class for young people to thread needle through cloth to create their own material bird and sew it on top of a cotton wheel.

Seven children aged between 10-15 left the guild with cotton creations that could easily enhance any mantelpiece at Christmas.

Ashburton Embroiderers’ Guild tutor Sue Quinn said they ran the class during all of the school holidays and it was a good chance for young people to learn skills that were forgotten and often overlooked.

“Most of their parents don’t have time to teach them, so it (the skill) just gets lost.”

Isabella Yukojovich, 10, said she had come down from Thames in the North Island and enjoyed the challenge.

She said she may give her creation to a friend or keep it for her bedroom.

Trump vows to get tough A defensive Donald Trump gave Hillary Clinton plenty of fresh material for the next phase of her presidential campaign, choosing to publicly reopen and relitigate some of her most damaging attacks.

The day after his first general election debate, Trump blamed the moderator, a bad microphone and said he was holding back to avoid embarrassing Clinton.

Next time, he threatened, he might get more personal and make a bigger political issue of former President Bill Clinton’s marital infidelities.

“I watched her very carefully and I was also holding back,” Trump said of Clinton, reflecting on the debate at an evening rally in Melbourne, Florida. “I didn’t want to do anything to embarrass her.”

It’s unclear whether a Trump attack on Bill Clinton’s infidelities may help or hurt his appeal.

Both campaigns knew the first debate, watched by some 80 million people, could mark a turning point six weeks before Election Day with Trump and Clinton locked in an exceedingly close race.

Kiefer praises Julia

Dr Zhang revealed some details about the family’s devastating journey to reach this world-first.

The parents have already lost two children to Leigh’s syndrome, their first at the age

of 6; their second at 8 months.

Leigh’s syndrome is a severe neurological disorder that attacks the nervous system.

It gradually inhibits a child’s mental and physical abilities from the moment they are born.

Sufferers typically die by the age of 3 of lung failure.

Tests revealed that the boy’s mother carries genes for the disease in her mitochondria.

Devastated by the loss of their two children, the couple flew to America to meet Zhang at New Hope, which focuses on training in new innovations.

Because of the strict regulations in the United States, the

team sought the nearest country without legislation to block them. That was Mexico.

The boy was born through a technique called spindle nuclear transfer.

Zhang removed the nucleus from one of his mother’s eggs.

It was then inserted in a donor egg that had its nucleus removed.

This egg was then fertilised with sperm from the father.

Five eggs were created with this technique, only one of which survived. The findings will be showcased at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine’s Scientific Congress in Salt Lake City next month.

The technique was carried out in Mexico because it would not be approved in the US by regulators.

Echoing both the fears and excitement of the entire medical community, Zhang pointed out: “This is just the start.”

For now, embryologists are focusing on the technique as a way to avoid hereditary diseases that prevent many adults with genetic mutations from having children.

Down the line, however, Dr Zhang said its application could be “unlimited”, even to the point of altering an unborn child’s DNA to edit their appearance or skill set. - NZME

The world’s first child has been born using a revolutionary technique that combines the genes of three parents.

The five-month-old carries DNA from both his parents.

But he also has a tiny piece of genetic code from a donor.

It means he has avoided inheriting a genetic condition from his Jordanian mother that could kill him.

The controversial technique has only been legally approved in the UK. But the first baby was engineered by a US medical team who treated the parents in Mexico, where there are no laws to block the procedure.

And embryologists believe the birth should fast-forward progress around the world, offering hope to millions who face the prospect of delivering terminally ill children.

“This is a milestone technique,” said Dr John Zhang, who led the medical team from New York City’s New Hope Fertility Centre.

The technique could be used for anything – from avoiding disease to altering a baby’s appearance, but for now, disease is the focus.

I

t seems that when local body elections are held, there’s always a community issue that raises interest or ire.

We had the long-running wrangle over the district’s new museum and art gallery, angst over the route for a second bridge across the Ashburton River and this time round the issues of concern are the location of the district’s new civic centre and library and the impact of wheelie bins on rates.

In some ways it’s odd that wheelie bins have been thrown back into the mix. The council consulted the community, asked for feedback and consulted again. It listened to what people were saying and in an effort to push costs out, has delayed the project for a year.

Now the bins are due to arrive from July next year and people are suddenly realising that they won’t be coming cost-free and wheelie bins have come back on the community’s agenda as an election issue.

The other less-easily-solved issue is the location of the district’s civic centre and library. That’s laden with emotion.

The costs are similar for all four sites, but consultants Opus have tagged one site as their first choice, one that would see Ashburton lose another of its iconic buildings.

The community doesn’t want a bar of this proposal. We’ve lost enough of our past.

Saving the church, however, isn’t that easy. Its congregation is small in number and the money simply isn’t there to carry out the major strengthening and restoration work it needs.

This is clearly a job for the community. If we want to save this building, we might need to put our hands in our pockets.

The ideal scenario would be for the council to buy the building and to launch a community fund raising drive to help with its restoration.

The options for its use would be endless, but it could have a bright, new future as a small performance, exhibition or meeting space and it could also be put to its original use as a church for services, weddings and funerals.

However it’s done, the Baring Square church has to stay and it has to be open for business, whatever that business might be.

Shareholders okay $400m scheme

District Council provided a shortterm loan, with more lending from ANZ Bank and Westpac.

The government invested $11.8m in the first stage of the project through Crown Irrigation Investments and the Irrigation Acceleration Fund, and $3.5m for the early investigation phase of stage 2.

Working less won’t make you happier The more work life balance we have, the more we want.

That’s the finding of a global study into employment conditions, which found that workers in countries with shorter working hours were more likely to complain of poor work-life balance than those putting in the hard yards.

Researchers explored the impact of legislated maximum working hours, now in place in most western industrialised countries, on work-family conflict, examining data for employees in 32 nations.

“We expected workers in countries with shorter work weeks to

report less conflict between the demands of their work and family, given this is one of the main objectives of shortening the work week,” said University of Melbourne senior lecturer Leah Ruppanner, who co-authored the study along with David Maume from the University of Cincinnati.

“Yet, this is not what we found.

Instead, we found the employees in countries with shorter working hours reported more work-family conflict.”

Dr Ruppanner said that even when variables like the length of maternity leave, gender empowerment, or gender differences in em-

ployment status were taken into account, “we found our results were robust, meaning these other dimensions of countries were not driving this effect”.

The results appear to call into question the policy idea that if you give workers a shorter work week, that should give them additional discretionary time to manage competing work and family demands. But there is a simple explanation, Dr Ruppanner said.

“We believe this counter-intuitive result is a product of the higher level of expectation set in countries with shorter work weeks,” she said.

fending and the case is understood to involve 75 properties in Auckland and Hamilton.

According to court documents, false salary payments were made as part of the applications for some of the loans in the case.

Banks were also allegedly provided with false income and employment information.

The accused banker allegedly processed and approved loan applications for the purchase of properties that he knew “were not true purchases, or was reckless as to whether they were”, the SFO has alleged in court documents.

This week, the banker had his bail terms varied by a High Court judge, allowing him travel overseas temporarily.

A banker who allegedly approved some of the mortgages in a $40 million Serious Fraud Office case is allowed to travel overseas – provided he puts up $500,000 as security.

The SFO charged four people – three men and a woman – with obtaining by deception earlier this month. They all have name suppression.

According to court documents, one of the accused is a lawyer, another is a banker, one is a manager and one is a director.

The SFO alleges that the lawyer, manager and director provided false information or withheld details to get more than $40m of property loans.

Crombie said the scheme would provide significant environmental benefits by replacing current groundwater abstraction with river water. The first stage replaced 75 per cent of the groundwater abstraction in that area, with bore levels remaining steady even during a drought period, and the same is expected in the next stages, he said.

The second stage of a major irrigation scheme, Central Plains Water, will be finished by September 2018 after unanimous support from shareholders.

The first stage of the project began last August and, when completed, the scheme will irrigate 50,000 hectares of dairy, horticulture and stock land between the Rakaia and Waimakariri Rivers.

However, a third stage has effectively been covered off in the second stage, with plans also to extract water from the Waimakariri River shelved and underground pipes favoured over the extension of the scheme’s canal system.

CPW shareholders buy rights to the amount of water they want from the project, and at a special meeting for Central Plains Water (CPW), the second stage, which will cover development of 20,000 hectares, got the unanimous support of over 200 shareholders, CPW said in a statement.

The total project is estimated to cost $400 million, with $250m to be spent on the second stage.

■ FMG YOUNG FARMER OF THE YEAR CONTEST

Have a go at New Zealand’s YFC It’s a new FMG Young Farmer of the Year Contest season with district contests and skills days – and everyone is being asked to ‘Have a Go’.

Starting with the Christchurch district Young Farmer Clubs this weekend, 400 NZ Young Farmer members will compete in 22 contests countrywide over the next few months.

From there the numbers will be whittled down to just 56 of the top competitors who will go on to regional finals that begin in February in the Otago/Southland region.

The eventual winners of those regional finals will then compete for New Zealand’s most prestigious primary industry title – the FMG Young Farmer of the Year, in July in Manawatu.

Contest chairman Dean Rabbidge, a Wyndham farmer, said this year the district contest and skills days were all about having fun while learning new skills.

“The district contests are held in a more relaxed atmosphere than regional finals and can be a fantas-

tic experience for everyone. We really want to see as many people as possible ‘having a go’.”

Mr Rabbidge said there was something for everyone when competing.

“From putting a handpiece together, to milking a cow, or applying first aid, there is a wide range of activities that anyone can put their hand up to do. The whole point of the district contests and skills days is to learn something new.”

This year there will be several entrants encouraged to enter around the country who might not have done otherwise, including Hannah Falconer – a 26-year-old member of the Methven Young Farmers club.

Although raised with a rural background, Hannah has no experience at farming in her career as a brand and sponsorship co-ordinator at NZ Young Farmers national office and reflects the growing membership base of rural professionals within the Young Farmer organisation.

“I’m really looking forward to it and think it will be lots of fun and who knows – I might do better than I expect!

“This year’s FMG Young Farmer of the Year, Athol New, entered a District Contest three years ago for a laugh and ended up winning it this year and he didn’t come from a farming background!”

Falconer would like to see more women, and a diversity of cultures entering.

“Ultimately it would be great to see a broad representation competing as that very much reflects the New Zealand primary industry today.

“We have strong immigrant communities who are the workforce backbone in some industries and it would be fantastic to see them entering.”

Irrigation efficiency crucial

Environment Canterbury and rural industry-good groups are gearing up with a programme to support water users through what is expected to be a third consecutive dry summer in Mid Canterbury.

With the exception of the alpine

rivers, river flows and groundwater levels remain very low, the Ashburton Zone Committee was told this week.

To date, the yearly rainfall has been below average and while it was boosted by wet months in January and May it was insufficient to impact on aquifer levels.

three successive dry winters with little recharge from snow melt.

Hydrologists say surface irrigators on the plains are likely to run into water shortages this summer, particularly those with groundwater consents tied to adaptive management conditions, which counts for about 100 users in Mid Canterbury, ECan senior hydrolo-

gist Patrick Durney said.

ECan has joined forces with IrrigationNZ, Federated Farmers, DairyNZ, Beef & LambNZ and the Foundation for Arable Research (FAR) to hold a series of workshops to assist groundwater irrigators to use water efficiently – particularly at the peak of the season.

ECan commissioner David Caygill agreed the timing was right to push the water use efficiency message, but it was important not to send the message that efficiency in irrigation will solve a drought.

Mid Canterbury workshops will be held in Dorie on October 11 and in Hinds on October 19.

For the year ending June 30, PGW achieved operating earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Operating EBITDA) of $70.2 million, up from $69.6 million for the prior financial year. “The board and I are very pleased with the operational performance of the company,” chairman Alan Lai said.

“This has led to an outstanding financial result given market conditions and the progress PGG Wrightson has made since 2013 is worthy of praise.

“In three years the company has grown operating EBITDA by around 50 per cent.

Our balance sheet remains strong and the investments we’ve made over the year will prove crucial as the company continues to deliver its One PGW strategy. This, combined with a recovery in agricultural markets, will provide a strong platform for further growth in the future.”

Ashburton Bowling Club In spite of the weather being more akin to winter sports the Ashburton Bowling Club was officially opened on Saturday September 24.

A moment of reflection and respect was called for departed members before the flag was raised by past Treasurer Barry McLauchlan.

The Mayor Angus McKay then welcomed the members, spoke of the work in the district and opened the season.

Bruce Harper, President of the Sub Centre then extended good wishes to the club for the 2016-17 season.

Life member Janet Moore rolled the jack and His Worship the Mayor delivered the bowl.

48 members then played two games to celebrate the new season and all then enjoyed the warmth of the indoors where they partook of afternoon tea and warm drinks.

It was pleasing to see some of the older members who do not play any more were present.

Apologies from President Murray Anderson for his absence, and Vice President Jo Ryk welcomed all members and introduced two of the new members to the club and wished them good bowling for

the season.

Members are reminded to enter names for the coming events on notice boards in both men’s and ladies rooms.

We hope that the winter chill does not last too long and that the warmer weather can be enjoyed by us all.

Ashburton Electronic Organ and Keyboards Club Marg Twamley welcomed Members and Visitors with some lovely music this evening.

Janet Smith greeted all members and guests. (two from Auckland and one from Invercargill) and told us Fairkie Matsinger is very unwell. Our thoughts go out to her family.

Don Hopwood arranged the evening’s entertainment, starting with Neil White on the keyboard.

He played a variation of some very old songs and asked the members to name them “This is a lovely way to spend an evening” a Judy Garland number “It’s a great Big World” lovely old tunes that some remembered.

Next up was Don Hopwood who played “Wheels” and “Calcutta” great Toe tapping music. Danny Lysaght - a guest- told us September is the most popular month for birthdays? Being nine months from Xmas!

He then played the organ “Sweet Sixteen” and “In the Mood” Len Hancy -a visitor from Auckland - Sang, Karaoke style” Everybody Loves Somebody”. Dean Martin - and “He’ll have to go “Jim Reeves and “Goodnight Sweetheart” a lovely selection.

The raffles were then drawn: 1st Graham Stevens. 2nd Len Hancy 3rd Helen Mills 4th Iris Taylor. Shirley Miller played “Sweethearts in Spring” “Forty Shades of Green” and finished with the T.V song “Hine Hine “Goodnight Kiwi” which took us back a few years.

Don Hopwood had some very good jokes throughout the evening.

Danny Lysaght gave us Elvis (with a ChaCha Beat) and so finished another evening with a cuppa and chat.

Great Music and good company.

Ashburton MSA Petanque Club Recently four players from the Ashburton MSA Club challenged themselves to take part in the South Island Singles tournament at Alexandra.

It was a 2 day event and at the end of the first days play 3 of us had earned a place in the championship.

At the end of the event Jonathan Crum finished 3= in the plate.

Plate winners were Irene Herron along with Nicolas Xavier and Gladys Norrie.

Runners up were Stephen Kyle and Betty King, both from Ashburton Pauline Morgan.

Bowl winners were Marion Harrison from Ashburton along with Kay Morrison and Ron Terris.

Another enjoyable day and Ascot are always great hosts.

Coming up is the Piste of Origin at Ascot where 6 players are chosen to take part.

We have some players interested in taking part in the South Island Doubles at St Kilda next month.

Ashburton Pakeke Lion’s Club President Lion Peter O’Neill welcomed 73 members, Lion’s ladies and guests to the October meeting held in the MSA Res-

taurant.

Special guest was 2nd Vice District Governor Lion Tony Thomas who is sharing the club visiting programme with the District Governor.

A moments silence was taken to remember our loyal and respected long time member Colin Davison. Assistance is required for the Blind Foundation and The Pink Ribbon Appeals.

Pakeke will soon be selling tickets for the annual Christmas Stocking.

Recently the Pakeke Club had formed an association with the Borough School and have been asked to assist with the field events section in their athletic sports day.

Members will again assist with the erection of tents in preparation for the A&P Show.

The annual exchange with the Temuka Pakeke Club will take place on October 29, a fun day of fellowship. ECAN has requested assistance with the setting of traps to monitor and catch vermin within the district.

Ashburton Rose Group The monthly meeting of the Ashburton Rose Group was held on Wednesday September 14 and we had a good turnout of members present.

We had apologies from Carol Gielingh, Audrey McKay and Clare Wesley.

A discussion was held on rose cultural for this time of year, pruning should be finished and then roses can be sprayed with copper and oil.

Potash can be put around roses now and rose fertiliser next month.

Give them a good drink once a week.

Our next meeting will be a “Rosie night”, wear rosie clothes and bring a rose cup, saucer and plate.

Our speaker for the evening was Nicola Crossan from “Time for Diamonds”.

She gave us a talk on her recent trip with a group to the diamond capital, Antwerp, Belgium to buy diamonds which have been ordered by clients.

This was a very interesting talk and enjoyed by all members.

The meeting closed with supper.

The final of the Theology mini-series drew a large group of members and visitors as Professor David Tombs presented Religious Faith and its Meaning in Today’s World.

Professor Tombs who was introduced by Jill Ross, asked the question: why does religion matter today?

It was all very thought provoking as he went on to give examples from time immemorial, good versus evil and vice versa depending on one’s point of view.

Giving examples from three different prominent theologians, Professor Tombs quoted German born Paul Tillick whose ideas drew heavily on the understanding of ‘being’: The idea of an infinite being (God) or infinite beings (Us). Being/being and Ultimacy/Penulticamy and the potential of the penultimate to become ‘Demonic’ is a problem for non-believers and Christians alike.

American Methodist minister Walter Wink believed one of the enduring myths of western culture was violence saves and that salvation requires violence. It demands obedience, directs and regulates the life of individuals and whole societies.

That the desire for peace can only be achieved by violence continues to be perpetuated today. Us and Them – Our Violence and Their Violence equally righteous depending on which side you are standing.

Peruvian Priest Gustavo Gutierrez, a liberation theologist, described the idolatry of money and materialism demanding the blood of the victims, the world’s poor.

Capitalism, materialism, consumerism and the freedom to choose – responsibilities and consequences.

Whatever people treat as ‘ultimate’ in their lives is their god.

Professor Tombs was thanked by June Barrett.

Mid Canterbury Mens Probus Our September meeting was again well attended and included one visitor.

President Doug Anderson led the meeting in silent remembrance of two members who recently passed away; Colin Davison and Colin Thomas.

Bus trip convener Don Hopwood advised of plans for a cruise on Lyttelton Harbour aboard the Black Cat on November 30.

A show of hands of those interested indicated there may not be sufficient numbers to proceed with it.

Following this a new member was inducted and welcomed into the club.

Our mini speaker was from the Mens Shed club and he outlined their shift to new premises on the previous site of Grieves Transport.

With about 70 members, they welcome anyone interested in DIY and in addition they have widened their scope to include occasional guest speakers and a room for socialising.

Our main speaker was Mathew Hall who is a member of the Fish and Game Council.

He pointed out that 80% of our lowland streams in Mid Canterbury are severely compromised.

While salmon and trout numbers have declined severely over the past decades, the F & G councils aim is to maintain an environmentally sustainable population in the long run, despite the many issues they face.

Allan Tweed thanked our main speaker and the meeting was closed.

Plains Ladies’ Probus Club There was a good attendance on a cold wet day and President Wilma welcomed members.

Birthday greetings etc. and condolences to the Thomas family were given.

Ashburton Woodworkers Chairman, Merv Peck welcomed the twenty members to the September meeting along with guest, Rex Marshall from the Christchurch Woodturning Club.

We were reminded about Boulevard Day on Monday.

Using a jam chuck he remounted the boxes thus keeping them identical.

He then mounted the lid in four different positions and by using special tools cut four circles.

His precision really made the lid and base something special.

It was a very detailed demonstration and difficult to describe as there were many different systems used.

Natalie then informed us that the bus trip to the West Coast has had to be cancelled due to lack of interest and announced that the Black Cat ferry trip is on the 30th November and money to be paid at the next meeting.

The movie on the 5th October at the Regent Theatre at 11 am is “Bridget Jones Baby” Will be good entertainment.

Then instead of a mini speaker Wilma kindly organised a quiz with members remembering by gone days with things like Radio programmes, Magazines and newspapers, early TV shows, 1947 Ballantyne’s fire, Queens visit, 1959 Auckland harbour bridge was built, 22 November 1963 J. F. Kennedy was assassinated and many more.

Members enjoyed telling their stories.

After morning tea Richard Fitzgerald kindly came to speak us.

He told us about how they farm out of Methven, he was born in Wales then lived in Perth before coming to New Zealand.

He is involved with the Young Farmers Club contest, sheep and beef association and works with different farming organisations.

He showed slides of castles and places he visited, won a scholarship to go to Brussels on a Leadership course and was in Brussels when the bombing occurred in the Airport and Subway station.

He spent time back in London before returning home.

The next meeting is on October 17.

RSA Women’s Section President Colleen Hands welcomed members on September 22.

A special welcome was given to visiting friends and six members of the Temuka Women’s Section who had come to help celebrate our 71st birthday.

A minutes silence was held for a late member.

Apologies were received.

The pianists, Hope McIntosh and Lorraine Boud cut the birthday cake, which had been decorated by Joy Tarbotton.

Hope played the piano for the singing of the RSA song and happy birthday to those celebrating.

Sympathy was given to anyone who has sadly lost a loved one.

Sick members were wished well.

Those who had helped with meals on wheels were thanked.

The Christmas meal on Monday December 5 will cost $25.

She entertained on her keyboard.

The music was lovely and she gave information about some of the tunes.

There was a sing along and a story told.

By Patrick Mckendry Joseph Parker is limiting his time on social media in order to block out the talk of a title fight against Anthony Joshua as he attempts to focus on his bout against Alexander Dimitrenko in Manukau on Saturday.

And in case the 24-year-old New Zealander was allowing his attention to waver towards a potential meeting against IBF heavyweight champion Joshua in Manchester in November, giant Russian Dimitrenko delivered it in their press conference in Auckland today when he said: “He’s already looking behind me and concentrating on Anthony Joshua instead of me.

“There could be a bad joke if he doesn’t concentrate on [our] fight and continues to look forward.”

Their meeting yesterday was a cordial affair following Parker’s comments last week that he felt disrespected by Dimitrenko questioning his points victory over Carlos Takam in May. There were handshakes and even a wink from Parker after Dimitrenko stated a fortnight ago that he had looked into the South Aucklander’s eyes and had seen he wasn’t ready for the challenge he would provide.

Dimitrenko said: “I can see he’s ready for the fight. I’m ready for the fight. We’ll see how it goes down on Saturday.”

Parker, who has his parents Sala and Dempsey staying in the same downtown Auckland hotel as he prepares for what could be his final fight before his title challenge, said they are proving valuable sounding boards as the heavyweight division enters yet another Tyson Fury-inspired state of flux.

Joseph Parker Parker, No1 contender for the WBO belt, said of focus: “My mum and dad told me ... that ‘if you don’t get past this guy, then what’s the point of focusing on those other names?’.

Kane Williamson’s three-way battle for the top ranking among test batsmen has taken another turn.

The New Zealand skipper has inched up one spot to second in the latest rankings out today, after making 100 runs during the first test loss to India at Kanpur this week.

That was enough to move former world No 1 Williamson one point ahead of England’s Joe Root.

Both sit behind the top-ranked batsman, Australian captain Ste-

ve Smith. Smith has 906 points, with Williamson on 879 and Root 878.

The trio have a comfortable edge over the next best group, headed by South African Hashim Amla on 847 and Pakistani veteran Younis Khan on 845.

The top 10 is rounded out by the currently injured South African skipper AB de Villiers, Australians Adam Voges and David Warner, and England captian Alastair Cook.

New Zealand’s next best ranked batsmen are Ross Taylor (15th), BJ Watling (33rd) and Tom Latham (36th).

Rakaia ladies hit top form

Suckling a starter The Western Bulldogs have dismissed reports defender Matt Suckling has suffered a setback in his recovery from an achilles tendon injury. Suckling is battling to play in Saturday’s grand final and was less than convincing when he was put through his paces at training on Tuesday. But Bulldogs’ football chief Chris Grant disagreed with that assessment, telling reporters that Suckling trained well and reported no issues after the session.

Rakaia Golf Club’s ladies have been on a fine run of form with the open pennants team adding a new addition to the trophy cabinet.

‘Clubs will do the talking’ Spain’s Sergio Garcia has thrown down the gauntlet ahead of this week’s Ryder Cup matches when asked about recent comments demeaning the quality of the European side and praising the US squad.

“You don’t win Ryder Cups with your mouth,” Garcia said yesterday.

“You win them out there on the golf course. So that’s what we’ll see, which team is the best.”

The Europeans have been the best in eight of the past 10 competitions in the biennial match play competition against the

United States, but this time they bring six Ryder Cup rookies into the fray against an impressive American line-up.

Garcia, playing in his eighth Ryder Cup having celebrated five Europe wins, was reacting to NBC commentator Johnny Miller’s assertion that this was a decidedly weak European team, and to US captain Davis Love III’s boast about the ‘greatness’ of his side.

Fun run for all the family

The second annual Rakaia Salmon Run is set to take place in a couple of weeks and the organisers spent part of Tuesday finalising the course.

The Salmon Run is a fundraiser organised by the Rakaia Lions, while it has nothing to do with fish, there is plenty of running.

There are six courses planned, from a 6km fun walk to a 35km multisport event involving a bike, run and kayak.

In total there is the 35km mul-

tisport course, two duathlons, a long 13km run, a short 6km run and the 6km fun walk.

The long duathlon consists of a 35km bike ride and a 13km run and the short duathlon is a 25km bike and a 6km run.

Mandy Hurst, who is part of the team organising the event, said they went down on Tuesday to make sure the course routes were perfect.

She said they didn’t want a repeat of last year when a course had to be changed at the last minute due to the river flooding.

Family has also been a focus and the minimum age for many events has been lowered to encourage family groups to attend.

Children as young as five can participate in the fun walk, with parental supervision, the age for the short run has been lowered to 12 and children as young as 14 can take part in the multisport and duathlon events.

However, Hurst said without the generous support of sponsors they would never have been able to get the Salmon Run off the ground.

“Jackson Holmes have made a real commitment for three years to get this event established and Hyundai Mid Canterbury not only put money into the event, they branded a new Santa Fe to help promote the event,” she said.

Registration is open until October 6, afterwards people will still be able to enter but they will have to pay a late registration fee.

Tew incapable of lifing rugby out of the gutter

ugby’s image is in the gutter, and Steve Tew proved hopelessly incapable of lifting it out as he was interviewed-harangued by TV3’s Paul Henry.

Henry was at his cutting best, a one-man pack of howling dogs with a bone over the Losi Filipo case. He didn’t want much out of Tew, whose role was to sit there via a video link and absorb the outrage.

“Will you tell me now, that I won’t have to have a conversation like this with you again,” Henry snarled, in one of the most memorable lines by an interviewer on New Zealand television.

It must be many years since anyone spoke to the dictatorial head of New Zealand Rugby like that.

As I’ve opined before, time should be called on Tew’s archaic rugby leadership. The game needs a massive overhaul.

He didn’t stand a chance against

Henry, but Tew’s rugby monolith hardly deserved one.

There is no defence for the way rugby bosses have protected the vicious thug Filipo at the expense of almost everything else, including their own reputations.

Rugby has been rocked by recent scandals. The most visible parts of New Zealand’s national game are operating in parallel worlds: the winning wondrous All Blacks and everything else.

Apart from the horrible overbranding, the All Blacks are a joy to watch, led by the strangely charismatic Steve Hansen.

They have lifted the game to new heights aided by the new lows being set by Australia and South Africa. Hansen is enlightened and approachable especially compared to those who employ him.

Elsewhere, rugby has a giant hole in the soul.

The administration is conceited and remote. The Filipo and Chiefs strippergate cases have exposed a heartless attitude towards those

who are victims of player misbehaviour and or violence.

Rugby players always get off.

Some of the branch office minions act like the fawning gatekeepers of a sacred society.

Rugby’s sense of entitlement and the favours bestowed on the country’s dominant game have infuriated a lot of people for many years. Somehow, rightly or wrongly, the Filipo case seems to be an icon of rugby privilege and arrogance. There are finer details, but the overall situation is pretty damn clear.

The teenage Filipo’s assault on four people was absolutely sickening. What followed was just as sickening: a discharge without conviction and Wellington rugby bringing him into the playing fold as if nothing had happened.

One quote in all of this stands out to me. A Filipo victim, the 22-year-old Hayden Williams, says he confronted the player after seeing him in the street shortly after the court case.

“Losi was laughing at me and kept saying he’d been through court. I felt like he was laughing that he’d been through court and got off,” said the incredulous Williams.

That’s how a lot of us feel. We are being laughed at. The court system itself is a charade. The right results in the Filipo case are gradually being achieved, but this has only occurred through a magnificent public outcry.

There has been an unbelievable lack of obvious care for the victims.

Phrases from the rugby hierarchy such as “don’t condone his actions” and “extremely disappointed” sound like insincere jargon. Actions speak louder than words.

I’ve been a court reporter and courts can be soul and judgement destroying places. Judges do face tough decisions, but this wasn’t one of them. The severity of Filipo’s assault demanded a conviction, no matter the effect on his career or life. We all know that.

In saying that, Judge Bruce Davidson deserves to have his work assessed over all of his cases, not just one.

I don’t know his record. But I do know Tew’s and his middle class white guy administration has lost touch with the people.

Tew may be unfairly branded over the Filipo case, as he was in the dark until this week.

But there should have been automatic reporting protocols in place. He should have known.

He also lacked the initial willingness to front publicly, to express outrage, and show any desperate compassion towards the victims who have suffered horrible consequences. Tew talked about “processes”, like he was acquiring a business.

Tew has had a long run in charge and many successes, but rugby needs a new direction, a new heart.

He needs to go. But what’s the bet we will be having this conversation again.

Glenn ruled out Brisbane second-rower Alex Glenn will miss New Zealand’s Four Nations rugby league campaign after undergoing shoulder surgery yesterday. Glenn had an operation to stabilise his AC joint, after carrying an injury through the back-end of the 2016 season.

After the predicted four-month recuperation period, he is expected to be fit for the beginning of the 2017 season for the Broncos. “It is a three-to-four month recovery for an operation of this sort,” Broncos high performance manager Jeremy Hickmans said.

Kate ‘fizzing’ on Aussie trip

An Ashburton College student’s softball competition in Australia is going well.

Kate Flanagan landed in Sydney on Saturday and became part of the New Zealand International Softball Academy’s (NZI-

SA) under-15 tournament team competing at the Blue Blaze Tournament in Blacktown Olympic Park.

Flanagan’s team has played six matches so far with two wins, three losses and a draw.

It is a new experience for Flanagan, competing against play-

ers with a variety of skills, she said.

“I don’t think I’ve ever faced a pitcher so good.”

The 15-year-old said she is enjoying spending time with her teammates, who are “lovely”.

NZISA under-15 team coach Sammi Parks said Flanagan fits

in well and, as one of four pitchers, has played a key role for the team.

Flanagan’s mother, Fiona, said she had stayed up until 1am yesterday to watch the live stream of her daughter’s match and had spoken to her afterwards.

“She was fizzing,” she said.

Bellamy bracing for heavy enemy fire Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy is warning his players they will be in enemy territory as they finalise preparations for Sunday’s NRL grand final against Cronulla.

Following an open training session in front of Melbourne fans the Storm flew to Sydney where Bellamy is expecting the attention, and hostility, to ramp right up.

Overseeing his sixth grand final in his 14 Storm seasons, Bellamy described criticism this week of his captain Cameron Smith for alleged dirty play during their preliminary final win over Canberra as “predictable” and expected more to come.

“It doesn’t matter who you play up there, if it’s a Sydney team you’re going to cop it,” Bellamy said yesterday.

The veteran coach was unhappy about the promotional demands on his team leading up

to the title decider, including an appearance at the Sydney Opera House, and said he’d prefer if they could just concentrate on the game.

But Bellamy said he had spoken to his young players following their win over the Raiders and told them to embrace the week, which would be the biggest of their careers, and also try to keep to their regular routines.

He hoped they would listen to their leaders, skipper Cameron Smith, who has played in five grand finals and Test halfback Cooper Cronk, who will run out for his sixth.

“We’ve got two of the most experienced guys in the competition at big games, and another three or four who have played in grand finals as well and hopefully it will rub off on them,” Bellamy said.

The Storm beat the Sharks 26-6

Craig Bellamy in the final round battle to claim the NRL minor premiership but Bellamy believed the scoreline flattered his team and says the ANZ Stadium decider would be much tighter.

“I said after the game that the Sharks had won 15 in a row during the season and you’re a real quality team to do that in this competition,” Bellamy said.

“We also had a bit of an ad-

vantage playing at home.

“I think the score flattered us a little bit and it was a lot closer than that.”

He did however rate that performance, and their qualifying win over North Queensland, as two of their best games of the year and felt they were heading into the grand final with momentum.

With his team able to hold their season together despite being decimated by injury early on, Bellamy said they deserved to be playing in the grand final.

“I can’t remember a year when we’ve had as many injuries and the guys have been tremendous and have really risen to the occasion.

“I’m really proud and happy for them because I genuinely believe they deserve the opportunity they’ve given themselves on Sunday night.”

If Paul Gallen can lead Cronulla to their maiden NRL premiership on Sunday he will rate it as a career highlight above NSW’s State of Origin series in 2014. Just. Gallen led the Blues to an epic interstate win in 2014, breaking eight successive years of Origin dominance from the Maroons in the process. But the Sharks skipper said if he can steer Cronulla to a win over Melbourne that will top it.

“It would probably be even more special,” Gallen said.

Raiders in doubt Canberra centres Jarrod Croker and Joey Leilua both suffered injuries in the NRL preliminary final against Melbourne that could have ruled them out of the grand final and have them in doubt for Kangaroos selection.

Croker suffered a ligament strain to his left knee in the 14-12 loss at AAMI Park on Saturday and Leilua strained his hamstring. The Raiders revealed yesterday that both players will undergo rehabilitation on the injuries. Both Croker and Leilua were earlier this week named in Australian coach Mal Meninga’s train-on squad for the Four Nations.

Support for referees NRL referees boss Tony Archer has applauded his officials for not being swayed by the upswing in talk about Melbourne’s wrestling tactics during this year’s finals series. Storm coach Craig Bellamy last week lashed out at critics who he claimed routinely come out to bash his team’s playing style at the business end of the season. However, Bellamy’s men overcame the barrage of judgement to progress to a highlyanticipated decider against Cronulla on Sunday. The man who oversaw the preliminary final between the Storm and Canberra, Matt Cecchin, was rewarded by being named lead referee at ANZ Stadium. Archer expects his officials to continue their form in the biggest game of the year.

Three Ashburton Jennian Homes swimmers will be in action at the National Age Group Short Course Championships next week.

The 2016 championships will be five days of action-packed

racing where the best short course swimmers in the country will converge on the Sir Owen Glenn National Aquatic Centre in Auckland.

The local contingent hoping to secure national honours will be Lucy Clough, Courtney Elli-

ott and Rikuya Shibahara.

Clough will be swimming in the 17- to 18-year 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 400m freestyle, 400m individual medley and the 800m freestyle, while Elliott will be representing Mid Canterbury in the 13-year

200m and 400m freestyle events.

Shibahara, who is a new member of the Ashburton club, will race in the 17- and 18-year 200m and 400m individual medleys.

The short course champs will begin on Sunday and conclude on Thursday.

Covert video sinks England manager Even by English soccer’s standards, the latest embarrassment is a new low.

Sam Allardyce was forced out in disgrace after one game in charge of the national team.

Having taken 25 years to reach the pinnacle of English soccer management, Allardyce was toppled after only 67 days by his hubris and indiscretions involving undercover journalists posing as businessmen.

The English Football Association decided yesterday, within 24 hours of a Daily Telegraph sting being published, that the 61-year-old Allardyce lacked the integrity to hold one of the most prestigious jobs in the game.

Allardyce had a 100 per cent record – winning his only game against Slovakia earlier this month – but will go down as the England manager with the shortest tenure.

Even before taking charge of his first game, Allardyce was inadvertently preparing the ground for his downfall with his loose talk in a London hotel in August

to the investigative reporters.

A covert video showed Allardyce appearing to offer advice to fictitious businessmen on how to sidestep an outlawed player transfer practice and also to negotiate a 400,000-pound publicspeaking contract to top up an annual England salary of 3 million pounds ($NZ4 million).

A further video showed Allardyce mocking predecessor Roy Hodgson, who was fired after England’s humiliating loss to tiny Iceland at the European Championship in June, questioning the FA’s financial strategy and talking dismissively about the organisation’s president, Prince William.

The FA acted swiftly to publication of the story, holding emergency talks with Allardyce in London before announcing the termination of his contract.

“In light of the media allegations that we’ve seen,” FA chief executive Martin Glenn said, “we’ve concluded that his behavior has been inappropriate and frankly not what is expected of an England manager.”

Sam Allardyce And, as “guardians of the game,” Glenn insisted that the same rules and high standards of conduct had to apply to everyone in English soccer.

“That consistency, that trust that people have in us to behave in the appropriate manner, is core to what any football association is about,” Glenn said.

“We thought he was a great manager, but it’s the right decision if we are to protect the integrity of The FA.” Now Allardyce is left to reflect

on losing his dream job.

“It was a great honour for me to be appointed back in July and I am deeply disappointed at this outcome,” said Allardyce, who was never called up by England during his playing career.

“I recognise I made some comments which have caused embarrassment.”

England is not rushing to replace Allardyce.

Gareth Southgate, the manager of England’s under-21 side, will take charge of the senior team’s next four matches — against Malta, Slovenia, Scotland and Spain — across October and November.

The Telegraph published its investigation in its Tuesday edition, under the front-page headline: “England manager for sale.”

Pep talk inspirational Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri revealed a pre-game pep talk with Islam Slimani and Riyad Mahrez helped inspire the Foxes to victory over Porto. Striker Slimani’s header gave the Foxes a second 1-0 win to start their Group G campaign and maintain a 100 per cent start in the Champions League. Classic catch for Budge January’s ASB Classic in Auckland will be the hottest ticket in town this summer with the inclusion of sporting superstar Serena Williams.

Not since Tiger Woods played the New Zealand Golf Open in 2002 has an athlete with such global recognition and success, played here.

Before yesterday morning’s announcement there were 14 corporate boxes available for the ASB Classic women’s tournament.

Ten minutes after the announcement organisers had already received dozens more enquiries.

There is no bigger name in women’s sport and at 35 years old, Serena Williams is still very much in her prime.

On court her game is brutal; she’s powerful, ruthless and driven.

With 22 Grand Slam singles titles, Serena shares the Open era record with the great Steffi Graf.

Most days on the court she is practically unbeatable, with the best serve in women’s tennis, a bone crushing forehand, and players struggle to live with her.

The tournament starts on January 2, traditionally a time when Aucklanders escape the city.

I suspect more than a few will change travel plans for the chance to watch Serena Williams in action.

While Williams is injury prone and has been known to pull out of big events at short notice, she usually fires at the start of the year, and will need match play before the Australian Open begins.

The ASB Classic has always batted above its weight.

It’s a small tournament that lives in the shadows of the Brisbane International with four times the prize money, a tournament with double the prize money in Shenzen China, and the popular Hopman Cup mixed teams event in Perth.

But over the years it’s attracted top names such as Lindsay Davenport and Maria Sharapova in the day’s before Karl Budge became tournament director.

However Budge, with a background working at Tennis Australia and for the WTA tour, has pushed all the right buttons with players and agents and has taken the tournament to new heights.

No-one thought the ASB Classic could match the lineup this year where Venus Williams, Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki, three of the most recognisable names in tennis graced centre court.

But in securing Serena after four years of trying, they already have.

Centre Robbie Fruean has completed a deal to join Bath, reuniting with his former Canterbury Crusaders coaches Todd Blackadder and Tabai Matson. The 28-year-old will move to the UK after his finishing his commitments with Hawke’s Bay in the national provincial championship.

The 2007 IRB world under-19 player of the year excelled in New Zealand’s junior ranks, but was then blighted by both illness and injury. Fruean rebuilt his career making more than 60 appearances for the Crusaders.

Aussie speedster dies Former Australian test cricket fast bowler Max Walker has reportedly died, aged 68. Walker, who played 34 tests for Australia, took 138 wickets at an average of 27.47 between 1972 and 1977. Walker died after a two-year battle with cancer. Walker became affectionately known as “Tangles” during his career for his unorthodox run-up. He was just as popular with fans off the field as a sports commentator on Channel 9’s Wide World of Sports as he was during his celebrated career.
